Default Potions Lesson 1 - Wolfsbane Potion

If Javier had been annoyed at the vines when they invaded the kitchens, that was NOTHING compared to how angry and frustrated he was that they were now in his classroom. He'd been able to push them to the back of the class, but his hands had scratches and bandages all over them from his efforts. It had taken FAR too long to even accomplish that! They kind of just...sat against the wall like some sort of edgy paneling along the floor.

Despite the time it had taken, they were out of the way - for now, at least. Hopefully the students wouldn't pay too much attention to the vines and instead would focus on the various ingredients sitting on his desk. Milk, runespoor eggs, armadillo bile - what could they possibly be making today? Other than that, there were no special instructions or anything on the board. Students were expected to come in and sit at their stations as they did every lesson.

"Morning all," he said, nodding as the students began to file in. He waited patiently for them to all arrive, leaning against his desk with his arms crossed to (mostly) hide his scraped up hands.

OOC: Welcome welcome to your FIRST OOC potions lesson and my first lesson as Potions Master/Javi! I'm super stoked! However, please remember this is NOT your first lesson with Javier IC. In fact, it's already February so your character has had plenty of lessons with him already.

Please be sure to read the SSRPG and Classroom rules prior to playing. Class will commence in about 20ish hours CLASS HAS BEGUN! Please act as if your character has been here the whole time!. Let me know if you need anything!!

CLASS PROGRESSION:
Question 1 - What do you know about the Wolfsbane potion?
Mini Activity - Brainstorm with a partner all the things that could go wrong with the Wolfsbane Potion
Question 2 - Why do you think this potion so expensive and so difficult to produce?
Main Activity - Let's brew the Wolfsbane Potion!

There was quite a lot of good discussion going on around the room. Javier walked in and out of the aisles, keeping an eye on everyone to assure they stayed on task while also listening to what they had to say. He had predicted many of their answers - particularly about the toxicity of the ingredients and the expense associated with it. But Ashley and Remy were discussing lactose intolerance possibly creating issues, which was an excellent point, and he heard Florre and Noah had brought up explosions and possible long term damage as well.

"Alright everyone - I've heard some excellent points brought up, and I'm going to quickly run through some of the more common answers I heard to help you all complete your lists," he explained as he headed back to the head of the class, waving his wand so a list appeared on the board as well:

Quote:
POSSIBLE RISKS/ISSUES ASSOCIATED WITH THE WOLFSBANE POTION:
-Toxicity due to improper measuring of ingredients
-Failure of potion to have desired affect if brewed incorrectly / a dose is missed
-Long term complications, especially if taken by someone who is not a werewolf
-Expensive ingredients make access hard to come by
-

"And to answer your question from earlier Mister Flamsteed..." he added, turning to the Gryffindor who'd asked about when the potion was first discovered before the activity began. "Damocles Belby was the one who invented the potion in the 1970s. Remus Lupin himself did not brew it - he is believed to have received it from others prior to his position at Hogwarts. Once he got here, he received his potion supply from Severus Snape," he explained. He could go in to more detail about it, as he honestly found the backstory fascinating, but that would just take away valuable lesson time.

"You all touched on the biggest issues with this potion. For one, it's extremely difficult to make - precision is KEY, which you will all find out about when we brew it later. If not brewed correctly, it can cause illness or even death - or it just may not work at all. Additionally, the ingredients are expensive, making it difficult for werewolves to acquire the ingredients. That means they have to resort to trying to find ingredients at a cheaper price - which may mean they're getting them from less than favorable black market dealers - or they have to place trust in someone else who can afford to make the potion for them."

"One question before we try brewing it ourselves - why do you think the Wolfsbane potion is so difficult and expensive to make? We make potions all the time with ingredients you can grow in your backyard. What makes THIS potion so special that it is so complex, and the ingredients are so hard to come by?" he asked the class.

OOC: Great job everyone! Onto the next question - you will have about 24ish hours to answer this before we head to the main activity. Excellent work so far!! Let me know if you have any questions before we continue onward!

Then, turning her attention to the teacher's next question, she frowned slightly. Why were the ingredients of Wolfsbane expensive? Well...they just were, that's all. Sometimes things were just like that. "Well, I don't know exactly all the ingredients of the wolfsbane potion--I don't think the complete formula's ever been released to the public--but probably there are a number of ingredients that aren't just growing out in people's gardens. It was less about his friends being paired off and more about an assessment of potions skills.

But. Anyway.

"Have I given it any thought to the question posed a minute or so ago before stressing over who to partner with?" he asked rather bluntly, feeling as though his response was probably telling enough on its own and not entirely meaning to come across as sarcastic as his tone may have implied. "Not really...besides what you just said. Though I pictured more death than paralysis." So cheerful, Atlas Flamsteed was. "Or the individual with lycanthropy kills you because the brew itself was messed up or they missed a day drinking it and their mind lost during their transformation." Another pause. "Also...I shouldn't be taking it period. Professor himself even said if you are not afflicted with lycanthropy then don't do it. So that would be my first mistake, putting something in my mouth I shouldn't."

Like a toddler.

Oh.

So that’s how Atlas wanted to play it? “Yes, that’s exactly what I meant.” Claudine did intend for her voice to come out cold and flat. Forget trying to be nice and patient but if this Gryffindor was going to get sassy with her, she would be having none of it. “Given that death was the most obvious thought and answer, I figured that going in a different direction would not be so bad.”

Without a further word for the moment, the seventh year made a few jottings though her ears continued to zone in on her difficult partner’s voice. “So many possibilities,’’ she muttered, absently tapping her quill against her chin. Cue more scribbling on her parchment after a minute. “Messing up the potion… that can mean adding the wrong ingredients, having the wrong measurements…”

Atlas had some excellent points but this Snakette wasn’t going to tell him that. “Aconite is even dangerous to the bare skin since it can be absorbed that way. Imagine forgetting your gloves while handling it.” Goodness. This really was a potion to be reckoned with. There was something she was about to add but Hernandez called for their attention at that moment.

Looking down at her notes, Claudine confirmed to herself that some of the points Hernandez had added to the board were what she had scribbled. Her eyes fixed on the professor again, she kept her expression blank but inside? Inside, she really pitied the werewolves. Not all of them were Fenrir Greyback. Her hand was quickly raised. “Um, the fluxweed needs to be picked on the full moon so if someone forgot to do just that then they’d have to wait an entire month again.” That in itself was a complexity.

They hadn't made a lot of headway on their discussion, but Kins wasn't upset about it. She preferred to be at her own workstation, no offense, Max. So she offered him a tiny wave, before moving back to her own table. All her stuff was over there. It was necessary to move.

As for this wolfsbane stuff, yeah, okay. Super expensive. Hard to come by the ingredients. Fluxweed could only be picked during the full moon. Duh. Kinsay was only half listening, mostly because this stuff was pretty easy to understand and she already knew it. But because she didn't want to get called out for lack of participation, she opted to raise her hand this time. "Discrimination." Though it didn't necessarily say so in her textbook, Kinsay was pretty confident. "People have wrongful prejudices against werewolves, so ingredients are made super expensive to disenfranchise them even more..." Which was all sorts of horrible. And inexcusable. And really disgusting. It was proper exploitation of the system.

And if anyone wanted to argue that these sorts of backwards ideologies couldn't possibly exist in this day and age, Kinsay would politely refer them to Term 57. Anyway, she'd be going to go back to doodling in her notebook now.

Leaning back just a tad to look at the professor and the notes, he was pleased to see his and Florrie's answer on the board. If only Catherine was in Hogwarts, he would've gloated and rub in her face that she wasn't the only smart Mordaunt twin. Just saying.

Now, why was the Wolfsbane Potion so expensive? Noah took a glance at Kinsay as she gave her answer, because it was an excellent one...and also noted her...lack of enthusiasm. Anyway, back to the question, Noah raised his hand and waited for his turn to answer.

"The Wolfsbane Potion, as we all know, is a complex potion to brew, and so that pretty much clues us in on the ingredients that's used to make it. Lycanthropy is a form of Transformation which is complex magic on its own, so to counter it, one needs high-quality, Class A or higher substances that cannot be simply grown in one's backyard. I mean, in business, if I were the supplier, I would have to sell it for a higher price at the get-go considering that the ingredients are highly toxic, limited due to its nature of harvesting, add to that the manner of harvesting these ingredients, as it would required highly-skilled herbologists, magizoologists, and even potioneers. I mean, it's a cure for a dangerous condition, albeit temporarily, but these potions need to be made safe for consumption. The process for these ingredients and potion, to be available to us, would've undergone quality control and close supervision by experts, and that usually demands a lot of galleons to begin with."

Ooookay, he was done nerding out while he was sat beside a really pretty sixth year. Can they go brew now?

Well, yes. But also, "Maybe one wouldn't be able to have access to all the ingredients?" It was a possibility. Val noted it down, wondering what the other problems could be - hoping the younger girl was trying to come up with some too. But.. soom enough the professor resumed with the lesson. Oops.

UHHHH. She had no idea... because she didn't know what the ingredients were or how it was made. After a few moments of thinking, she came up with pretty much nothing so she remained quiet.. and listened to what her classmates had to say.

In truth, the answer Evan most agreed with that he'd heard given was from Kinsay. Noah's answer was also very well thought out and covered the question quite well too - complicated did take more time and the ingredients were rare. But it still felt like it was intentional for people to not be able to afford the potion.

Still, he had a hard time not contributing something in class nerd, so he raised his hand to offer more specific regarding an ingredient. "Runespoor eggs can be difficult to come by. The runespoor is native to Africa and they don't live very long due to infighting between their heads. The planner and the dreamer head tend to get tired of the critic and bond together to kill it. But this affects their health too as they share the body." Poor Runespoors. He wondered if the Cerberus had similar issues.

Apollo definitely hadn't expected to see the vines in the potions classroom compared to all the other places in the castle. But moreover, there was something about this potion that was confusing to the third year. Weren't they supposed to be learning potions that would be relevant and useful?? In Apollo's blissful ignorance, he didn't see how brewing a potion geared towards only one group of people would be useful? Also, did they have any werewolves in this classroom? Was Professor Hernandez a werewolf???? He found himself looking at the professor for some distinguishing signs and then placed his defense book inside his potions book to read about distinguishing features of werewolves....

Glancing up when the professor started talking about the potion being expensive and Maya's brother was saying something the rarity of runespoors eggs and the dueling runespoor heads.

"I think you basically said it yourself, professor, with the cheaper ingredients being used from the black market, the quality is compromised. These particular ingredients aren't as common as others that we use in other potions." So why were they wasting the precious resources to attempt this potion? Wasn't that taking away resources from those more competent potion masters?? Unless ... there WAS a werewolf at Hogwarts who needed the potion?? So which professor was it?

He cannot afford to disappoint nowadays because a lot was at stake...namely his modelling career AND the upcoming summer holiday.

Gotta impress the folks, you know. Good grades meant an increase in his allowance, and he needed that extra galleons.

Obviously oblivious with what was going on with his partner, Noah took out his notes, and jotted down her idea on his parchment. "Poisoning, for sure...we can also add temporary and permanent damage to internal organs, maybe even affect one's mental state...worse, non-reversible transformation? I suppose that's possible." he said writing everything down as he spoke, "I'd rather be dead...so we'll put death, too." Noah sat back, biting his lower lip in thought, thinking of all the possible scenarios that might happen while brewing the potion. "Explosions...oh, maybe we should add intoxication due to toxic gas from a poorly brewed Wolfsbane potion. That can happen since this potion uses poisonous ingredients." Nodding, Noah passed his notes toward Florrie with a grin, "Did I miss anything?"

OOC: Great job everyone! Onto the next question - you will have about 24ish hours to answer this before we head to the main activity. Excellent work so far!! Let me know if you have any questions before we continue onward!

Was it bad that her thoughts drifted to angry arguments in Muggle films and how they always ended up? Probably, but Florrie didn't care because no one would know what she was thinking. Her mind briefly flitted to Milo and his interest in Legilimens, but she quickly shook the thought off and turned her attention back to Noah.

Resting her chin in her hand, she nodded along with what he said, occasionally offering the boy a noise of agreement. She was glad that he had answers, because she hadn't thought about what poisoning meant beyond 'bad news' and....

Did he know that was distracting? That lip biting?

So distracting she almost didn't notice him passing her the notes, but she nodded anyway, briefly looking over them and nodding thoughtfully as though she was reading them and not thinking about -

AHEM! Thinking about whatever Professor Hernandez was saying. Collating their answers. On the board. Right.

She frowned a little at the next question - or, more specifically the answer Lindsay gave. Which was sad, because it was such a never ending circle of prejudice - if werewolves had easy access to the potion, then they wouldn't be as hated and feared, but that hatred and fear was born out of what they were like without the potion and that meant they couldn't get decent jobs to afford the potion and so they remained hated and feared and -

Honestly, it made her head hurt.

You know what also made her head hurt? Noah being clever. Listening to his answer irritated her, because it just reminded her that he was clever as well as looking like that and honestly, between him and Seth Elliot she was going to be killed by clever boys who looked like that.

She kept her own had down, though, because she didn't really have anything more to add. And it was busy writing what other people were saying.

Kale shot his hand up in the air and started to speak. Much to the chagrin to everyone in the room. Or so he assumed. He knew what people thought when he opened his mouth. What people thought anytime ANY lion opened their mouth in classes. Alas. Gryffindor Life.

"It's probs difficult and expensive to make so that its harder for people suffering from lycanthropy to have easy access to it. There is a lot of prejudice surrounding the folks that transform with the moon." He tacked on as mostly an afterthought. "Also, like, I don't think that there has probably been a lot of funding and time dedicated to lycanthropy. Because of the hate these people get. So we only have the one option. And it happens to be a tough brew."

Systemic issues existed, buDS.

"But yes, many people are not skilled enough to grow these ingredients on their own, and runespoor eggs, for example are not cheap by any means, unfortunately." He could barely keep tomato plants alive, let alone something complex like wolfsbane.

Possibilities of Disaster When Brewing Potion:
  • Adding the incorrect ingredients
  • Adding incorrect measurement of ingredients

"Good point Miss Blaze. If they're not picked on the night of the full moon - which is necessary as the full moon is a link between the potion and lycanthropy - they're no good," he explained with a nod.

James had a point, however pessimistic it may be, and he gave her a nod of approval at her answer. "You're correct, Miss James. There is, unfortunately, a great deal of prejudice towards werewolves in our society even to this day. While that may not necessarily drive the prices of all the ingredients up - perhaps some, to a degree - it moreso has to do with the fact that employment is hard to come by for werewolves sometimes," he added.

Couldn't keep a stable job? Couldn't afford the potion. Simple as that.

Javier smiled a little at Noah's answer and nodded. "Those are all very good points that have an impact on inflation of prices. Someone has to harvest the ingredients, and their time is valuable as well," he explained. Did discrimination drive the prices up like Kinsay said? It probably had some part to play in it. But at the same time, people often forgot that the supply chain had many different people involved in the production of goods - and all those people had to be compensated for their work.

UHHHH. She had no idea... because she didn't know what the ingredients were or how it was made. After a few moments of thinking, she came up with pretty much nothing so she remained quiet.. and listened to what her classmates had to say.
"Yes Miss Nichols, that is correct. Some of these ingredients are flat out just difficult to find," Javier explained. Even if they weren't expensive, simply FINDING some of these items could be a task, especially depending on the time of year and where you lived.

"Very good Mister Nam. Runespoors are tricky little things to find - and even harder to try and raise them to harvest their eggs," he said in reply to Evan's answer. He mostly got his from potion supply shops and had no idea how they stocked them, but he would not be surprised if someone out there had attempted to start a runespoor farm.

So which professor was it?
..why was Apollo staring at him?

"Yes, good answer," Javier nodded at Apollo, who touched on the rarity of the potion ingredients as they'd stated before. He also ran a hand over his chin very subtly - just in case he had something on his face.

"Excellent points Mister Trent," Javier was always a little...surprised when Kale decided to speak up in class. "Prejudice aside, we still don't know a lot about lycanthropy. It's just so difficult to try and figure out HOW and WHY it all happens."

"You all brought up great answers. It really boils down to the fact that lycanthropy is a complex issue - and unfortunately it is still an issue that werewolves face a great deal of prejudice in their daily lives. So on the one hand you have a condition that is difficult to understand in the first place, and requires a precise potion to be brewed and administered a certain way to offset the affects. On the other hand, you have expensive ingredients and an economy that is in no rush to make it for affordable for them for a variety of reasons. There is no good solution - but we can work together as a society to address these issues and make it more accessible for all," he said with a soft smile. Perhaps - someday - legislation would be introduced to control the prices of the ingredients. Or more funding would be given to understand lycanthropy, as Kale suggested. There were so many things they could do to make it something ANYONE suffering from the condition could access.

"Now on to the fun part," Javier said with a grin, waving his wand so that the recipe for the potion appeared on the board behind him. "Please take a moment to review the steps of the Wolfsbane potion before grabbing your ingredients. Now, as I said earlier, I have modified this a bit. If you look at page 394 of your potions textbook, you'll find the complete recipe which has a larger quantity of ingredients and also takes seven days between the steps as opposed to this recipe, which can be done in one class," he explained. The ratios had to be adjusted, and obviously what they would be brewing wouldn't be nearly enough to counteract a real lycanthropy curse. He had also added some notes regarding the color of the potion so they would know if they were on the right track or not - but they didn't have to worry. Javier would be watching and would CERTAINLY be letting them know if they were off track.

"Also, I want to remind you all AGAIN that while this version of the potion won't be deadly if brewed incorrectly, it will definitely guarantee you a trip to the hospital wing, so absolutely NO taste testing - even if you are confident you brewed it perfectly," he warned. He had no patience for that kind of nonsense, and would not hesitate to throw around some detentions if he caught anyone even THINKING of doing that.

Quote:
Ingredients
* 1 10mL syringe full of regular cow milk
* 1 gram of fluxweed (picked on full a moon)
* 1 handful of a tame dog's neck fur
* 6 Jobberknoll feathers
* 3 tea spoons of Armadillo bile
* 3 grams of a well-whisked Runespoor egg
* 3 aconites' roots (aka wolfsbane)

Instructions
1. Empty the syringe of milk into a glass beaker and heat for 3 minutes on medium flame (separately from your cauldron)
2. Fill the cauldron HALF full with water and add the milk
3. Set the cauldron on low flame
4. Chop the fluxweed well and add it
5. Stir 7 times clockwise with a metal stirrer
6. Sprinkle the dog fur evenly (in about 10 seconds) The potion should turn a mossy green color.
7. Wait for exactly 7 minutes (keep track of the seconds using the clock in the classroom)
8. Add 3 of the Jobberknoll feathers
9. Wait for exactly 7 minutes again. The potion should turn a dark purple color if brewed correctly at this stage.
10. Add the other 3 of the feathers
11. Set the burner on medium heat
12. Add the Armadillo bile one tea spoon at a time. Potion should turn navy blue at this point.
13. Stir 7 times counter clockwise with a metal stirrer
14. Add the Runespoor egg
15. Wait for 7 minutes and 7 seconds
16. Cast 'Recordo' (wand movement - clockwise circle over the potion)
17. Add the aconite roots one by one
18. If done correctly, it will exude a faint blue smoke

"Once you have read over the directions, you may come up to the table here and gather your supplies,"
Javier said, gesturing to the table off to the side of the entrance where he had laid out all the supplies for them in neat little sections. The runespoor eggs and fluxweed had already been wisked and ground down for them, they just needed to grab a small container of it to measure out the correct amount. A small jar of pre-measured syringes full of milk were also sitting there, so each student could grab one and just go.

"You have the rest of class to finish your potion, and I will be walking around and making sure you're all on the right track as we go along," he explained. He always believed in letting the students work at their own pace, rather than trying to walk them through it and getting them flustered if they fell behind. "Please do not hesitate to ask questions if you have any. You may begin."

OOC: And now we have come to the main activity - let's brew some potions! You can post one long post with your character brewing, or you can break it up over multiple posts. It's up to you! You'll have until OCTOBER 31st (halloweeeeen) to wrap up this part, and Javier me will be monitoring closely the whole time if you have any questions - just ask! Please remember that this potion is TOUGH STUFF, so be realistic with your character's skill levels and have fun with it! Also please refer to the description of the ingredient table - some of these items are already ground down for your character, measured out, etc. Without further ado... let's goooooo!

Oh.

So that was how it was going to be.

Immediately falling silent and neck all but disappearing between his shoulders, Atlas resolved himself to simply nodding his head and agreeing with whatever it was that Claudine said for the simple sake of keeping the peace. He wasn't sure what exactly had prompted her to go from pleasant and welcoming to cold as daggers, but it had happened because he had answered her honestly...and since he did not know how else to answer things...it was best he just not talk at all.

Which was what he did. Not even when the professor addressed his question, which was mostly what he had been asking but also missed the mark a tiny bit, and certainly not when the professor posed the next question. He just sort of slouched in his seat and let Claudine take control of the moment. He wasn't too sure about the answer anyway other than maybe offering up the lame response of inflation - though, and he hated to admit this, he liked Kinsay's answer best and was the one he agreed with the most.

People, witches and wizards, were a cruel race...

...anyway...

Not-so-humbly disagreeing with the professor when he said they were moving on to the 'fun part', Atlas knew he could do at least the bare minimum and read the instructions. Read and commit them to, temporary, memory so if he was ASKED how to properly brew it he could give you an answer...but knowing was only half the battle. It also sounded like they did not need to be in their partners anymore, something he was now torn on being grateful about or horrified, so the Gryffindor simply tugged his robes a little more securely around him before slipping off the stool. All his stuff, including his cauldron, was at his station in the back of the room anyway.

"...okaybyethen..." he murmured before shuffling his feet and retreating to safety the back of his classroom and his own textbook. He had some reading to do before gathering up his ingredients.

Claudine fully expected responses and more input from Atlas. All she got was a whole lot of… nothing. Well, that was fine with her. He didn’t seem to like her very much and Claudine did not care one bit. All she wanted to do now that Hernandez had addressed their previous responses and questions was to get to the brewing aspect. She polished off writing her notes with a flourish, and sneakily looked around at Atlas. A part of her wanted to thank him for his input earlier. The Snakette shuffled with her textbook debating on doing just that but before she knew it, Atlas was mumbling and was off. Oh well. “See you.” Boy, she was not as comfortable with him as she was with the handful of her friends.

Back in her own company again, Claudine settled in to read the instructions and to make the comparison between Hernandez’s modified potion and the one in the textbook. The differences were easy enough to spot; there was still a bit of regret that they could not brew the actual potion. What a challenge that would have been.

With the reading out of the way, the seventh year got to her feet. Those ingredients would not gather themselves.

Default Sorry this is so long! Question for the professor
Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Ash agreed with Kinsay too. And Kale. If the government really cared about werewolves, they'd make the potion free. Sure it would cost lots of money, but that was far more preferable than having werewolves A. suffer(cruel) or B. kill people and break stuff(obviously bad too). They'd probably save money. And people wouldn't hate werewolves so much, probably. Money money money money money. She had lots and lots of money. Maybe she should pay for werewolves to get wolfsbane, because she cared, but also to make a point.

Hm. She jotted down a note on the back of her hand, then turned to her potion ingredients.

Step one... Ash grabbed a syringe and very very carefully emptied it into a beaker with her hand as steady as she could manage. It was not a lot of milk... who knew what would happen if she was off by even a little bit! She triple-checked that all of the milk had made it into the beaker, then started heating it(ooh fire! No Ashley, don't get distracted by the pretty fire).

Step two... Ash filled half(EXACTLY half) of her cauldron with water... it was very scary and her hand was shaking a little bit. Thankfully, it was hard to miss the cauldron, and she added both the water and the milk without incident.

Step three... Ash set the cauldron on low flame(ooh fire. NO).

Step four... Ash added the fluxweed, making extra extra sure she had every tiny little bit in the cauldron. It didn't matter that nobody would be drinking the potion. Ash didn't want to make a mistake! And this was really hard. The potion masters who made the real version of this potion correctly were like... wow. She was in awe!!!

Step five... she turned seven times clockwise with a metal stirrer.

Step six... she sprinkled in the dog fur as evenly as she could. Thankfully, the potion turned green. Moss green. Ash could say quite certainly the the potion was moss green. She was relieved.

Step seven... Ash waited, checking the seconds so that she could add the feather things at the exact right time. This was scary and wayyy above her pay grade. She nearly dropped the feathers in the cauldron a couple times because her hands were shaking a little bit and she had her hand ready to drop the feathers because she didn't want to be even a little bit late.

She checked the ingredients list and did a double take, committing the recipe to memory before turning back to the clock. "Professor Hernandez..." Ash didn't look away from her very important task of watching the clock. "why is the number seven so important to this? You said the real thing takes seven days to brew, right? Is that like... an arithmancy thing or...?" Because the number seven appeared too many times to be random.

Four minutes and forty- nine seconds left.

Javier hadn't heard ALL the particulars of the group work between Claudine and Atlas, obviously, but as they got started he could tell the Gryffindor boy seemed a bit...off. That pep in his step he usually had was gone. It had been some time since he'd been a teenage boy, but he still knew how to recognize when something was wrong, so as he passed the boy - who was now reading his textbook and hopefully going to get started soon - he tapped the corner of his desk to get his attention. "Everything alright?" he asked softly.

"Good question, Miss Fox. Your Arithmancy professor is probably a better expert on this, but the fact that seven shows up as a number of importance all throughout history is certainly not a coincidence. Many believe it represents the joining of the physical and spiritual, which would make sense in the case of werewolves - their physical being is being altered by magic. However, that's the extent I know about it," he added with a soft smile. One didn't have to dig too deep, though, to find MORE examples of the power of seven in history.

Was the actual brewing portion fun? He supposed so, though truthfully his preference was usually more discussion and note-taking than practical application. At least in this class, as Transfiguration and Charms were quite fun in application process as well. Once they were released to get started, Evan pulled his textbook closer - opened to page 394 and looking back and forth between that for reference and the blackboard with the modified instructions.

First things first, gathering the ingredients. Standing, Evan followed after Claudine in order to gather the necessary ingredients. Once that was finished, it was time to get started.

Step one was fairly simplistic - heat the milk on medium heat. He pulled his egg timer from home, a muggle device he always found rather handy - particularly with potions - and set it for 3 minutes after the heat started. While that started and he waited for the timer to go off, he went ahead and moved on to step 2 and filled his cauldron half full or was it left half empty?. He just reached the half way mark when the timer went off, so Evan carefully got the milk and poured it into the cauldron with the water.

Two steps down already.

His cauldron was then placed on low flame while he moved on to chopping the fluxweed. Fine always seemed such a poor description of how much to chop, but he went for it anyways. One gram was not too large of an amount, so it didn't take too long to get it the right (approximately) size. Adding in the fluxweed, he grabbed his metal stirrer, putting it into the liquid and starting at what would have been the 12, he stirred seven times clockwise before pulling the stirrer back out and setting it aside.

Next step. Adding in a handful of dog hair. He spread that into his potion, watching the clock as he did so to ensure he was done sprinkling within the allotted 10 seconds. And because step number seven seemed SO important, he chose to forego his timer for this portion and just stare at the clock and watch the seven minutes count down. He scribbled on his notes the location of the seconds hand when the seven minutes started, JUST in case.

And now it was just to wait, with the three jabberknoll feathers in hand for step 8 at the seven minutes.

Ash nodded at the professor and wrote something else on her hand, beside her previous note. Then she checked the instructions again, and counted down the seconds. Five... Four... Three... Two... One... ZERO.

Step eight... ADD THE FEATHERS. She hurriedly added three feathers. No more than three feathers. Exactly three feathers. Three feathers.

Step nine... Ash waited. She wrote a couple more things on her hand, then spent the rest of the time freaking out about how to wait exactly seven minutes.

The potion turned purple. Dark purple. But was it the right color of dark purple? DARK PURPLE WAS A RANGE. THESE INSTRUCTIONS WERE TOO VAGUE. This was why she didn’t like cooking.

Step ten... Ash added the other three feathers. She didn’t have to count them, cause she knew there were three.

Step eleven... medium heat(FIRE. No, do not play with the fire).

Step twelve... Ash began to add the armadillo bile as carefully as possible, mumbling things to herself about armadillos.

She had seen an armadillo once, did they know?

Of course, Noah would know about inflation of prices at the very least, since his family owns 'Prima Materia', a company that deals with the production of potions, specifically healing ones that are used in St. Mungo's, perhaps here in Hogwarts as well, and in other countries. While there was a need to pay the wages of the people who work for their company, those who run it would also need to make profit to continue its work. That's how business worked. However, Kinsay's answer made an impact...and maybe sparked an idea that would be worthy of discussion with his great-grandpa.

After copying everything that was written on the board, Noah turned to Florrie and offered her a small smile. "Hey, thanks for partnering up with me. I'll get going," he said, pointing back at his station. It looked like they were going to brew the difficult potion individually. Too bad though, because he wanted to stay and brew it with Florrie. Gathering his parchment and tucking his pen behind his ear, Noah went upfront and collected his ingredients and went straight for his workstation.

Out of habit, he checked all of his ingredients again, and after that, went ahead to retrieve his cauldron, beakers, stirring rods, and burner. Those too were scoured and cleaned before rolling up his sleeves to wash his hands. Potions protocol, yes? Of course, his goggles and dragon-hide gloves were also worn, understanding that he was going to handle toxic ingredients. (A step he almost missed during his Potions OWL which could've resulted in a huge points loss.)

Setting the beaker on top of his first burner, Noah emptied the syringe of milk into it, and began to heat it under a medium flame as instructed. He eyed the clock up front, marking the start time and the exact positioning of the minute hand that would indicate his 3 minutes was up. While the milk was happily simmering in his beaker, Noah went on to clean his cauldron the second time, filled it with water halfway, and waited for the milk to finish its purifying stage. After 3 minutes, Noah turned off his first burner, and levitated the beaker off of it, and added the hot milk carefully into his cauldron. The mixture was then put under the heat of a low flame from his second burner. Reaching for his silver knife, he carefully picked the fluxweed from his tray, and began to chop it as finely as he possibly could. Scooping it up carefully with his knife and hand, Noah added the ingredient to his cauldron, stirred the mixture 7 times clockwise, waited exactly 10 seconds for the mixture to rest, and then sprinkled the dog fur on top of the liquid as evenly as possible. Noah took a peek, and was relieved to see the potion turn into a nice shade of green. Not sure if it was the correct shade, however.

The Gryffindor eyed the clock, counting 7 minutes forward, and took note of it. While waiting, he looked around for the professor and held up his hand, "Professor, about the dog fur, will the breed of the dog make a difference in the potion's efficacy? Or is it enough that we use any as long as it's tame?" he said, pressing a gloved finger on his open textbook.

Kale was glad that his point was well taken. He knew he could be a lil intense when it came to stuff like this, but it was nice to be heard. And even lil James was rockin' in the HEY THINGS COULD BE BETTER FOR WEREWOLVES camp. Gosh, he liked all those James peeps.

But his appreciation for the lesson ended riiiiiiight about there. Cuz now he was expected to actually brew things, and Kale was not, like, the most adept at potions. It took a certain level of concentration and precision that Kale just didn't have in him, ok? He tried. But there were so many shiny things in the world that were better distractions than a potions brew with eighteen-- EIGHTEEN?!-- individual steps.

Brah. What in Merlin's underpants?! This was waaaaay too hard.

Still, the seventh year begrudgingly collected all of his ingredients, and started to make a plan of attack. What corners could he cut? How could he get out of doing this whole potion? COULD STEPS BE COMBINED?! Sigh. Didn't look like it.

He took the milk, which he sniffed, and emptied it into the glass beaker. It sat at his station for a HOT SECOND before he remembered he had to turn things on. Whoops! Hehe. He flipped on the flame and left it on medium-ish.

While he waited the three minutes, he filled the empty cauldron with water to approximately the halfway mark, and once he had some warm milk (still unclear if it was cow milk or almond or even oak??), he added it to the cauldron.

ONLY THEN DID HE TURN THE FLAME ON FOR THE CAULDRON. It said low. But what was low? Hard to tell. He guessed.

The fluxweed all chopped went in next, and then he started to stir. Seven times. Or was it six? He forgot to count after three stirs. But it was only cuz he got into kinda a trance. Stirring was HYPER soothing.

Default Hi, professor ^_^
~ Mrs Steve Harrington ~ Marvel-ous Patronus

With the help of magic, Claudine got everything safely to her workstation. After ensuring that all her equipment were clean before the milk was emptied into a beaker. With the burner all set, the glass container was heated on medium heat. She made sure to keep an eye on that three minutes. “Augamenti,’’ the girl muttered, halving the cauldron with water. In went the milk. Claudine fidgeted with the burner in order to get the heat registered properly. She glanced at the board ever so often in an attempt to not make any mistakes. Merlin knew she wanted to get everything right.

The Snakette added the already grounded fluxweed to the mix. Thank goodness Hernandez had helped by prepping some of the ingredients. This made the brewing process so much easier. Seven stirs with that metal stirrer followed; seven clockwise stirs, that was. Claudine counted them meticulously. When it came to that dog fur, she found herself thinking… and hoping… that the fur had been humanely removed.

Hello, There was that mossy green colour.

Now came the waiting.

Watchful as ever, Claudine kept her eyes on the clock. Each minute was counted as they went by.

And as Noah had a question for Hernandez... she put a hand up, eyes still on the clock. "Professor, the fur was obtained humanely, yes?'' Then the Snakette spared the man a steely gaze, as though daring him to say the fur hadn't.

Javier was keeping a somewhat close eye on Trent - he looked like he was going to fall asleep at his cauldron there - when Noah and Claudine both inquired about the dog fur. He smiled at Claudine and nodded. "Yes, just simple clippings will do - these in particular were collected from a grooming shop - and as long as it is hair of the canine variety, breed is not really a factor. It is a species that shares some similarities to the werewolf, which is why it is included," he explained. So yes, you would use the clippings from your fluffy miniature poodle's latest haircut, if you were so inclined.

The muggle grooming shop he'd gathered them from, however, had been VERY confused when he'd gone and asked to ransack their rubbish bins. If only they knew the things he did for his students...

OOC: Ok everyone! You've got a little less than 48 hours to finish your brews. I probably won't post a check in tomorrow as I'm working all day and then have halloween festivities to attend to, so if you need something OOC please nudge me via PM (I'll still hop on to check the thread!)

When the seconds hand hit where it needed to be, EXACTLY seven minutes later, Evan dropped the three jabberknoll feathers in his hand into his cauldron. Once those had been thrown in, once again he marked down the seconds hand for another seven minutes to pass.

Nervous to be a second over, he again stared at the hands instead of trying to use his timer again. One would have thought that seven minutes would go by SO s l o w l y while staring at a clock, but really it felt rather fast. In no time at all, it was time to add the remaining three feathers. And... from what he could tell, it appeared like his potion was the purple it was supposed to be.... Or was that a shade too light? It was nearly impossible to be able to tell. Had he messed up on his seconds?

Either way... there was no explosions or anything to say he'd been wrong, so he went ahead and continued on as if all was well. Since he also didn't know that it wasn't either. It was time to adjust the heat, turning it up to a medium. Grabbing his armadillo bile and a teaspoon, Evan began to dish it out - one teaspoon at a time until all three had been added. Once again, the potion changed colors.

And yet... he was fairly certain this time that wasn't the right color. It looked far too dark to be considered a navy. Still, no explosions though, so he might as well have seen it through at this point. The important thing was the attempt to complete the potion right? This was one of the most difficult things to brew; he highly doubted Professor Hernandez was expecting perfection out of them.

Even if that was desperately what he wanted to provide.

Once again, time to stir. Starting at the 12 spot, he went around 7 times clockwise, before pulling his stirrer back out and reached for the runespoor egg, dropping that in, before going back to the clock for a final time.

This time was even MORE important to stare down the clock, as it was 7 minutes and 7 seconds exactly. Time went by quickly, and before he knew it, it was already time to cast. He'd pulled his wand from it's holster around the 5 minute mark, so that he'd be ready once time. One clockwise circle over the cauldron, and a soft yet firm "Recordo!".

The aconite roots were next, well.. technically last. He managed to pick up the three roots, dropping them in one, after another, after another.

Consulting his book again on what the potion should look like now, Ev compared the bright blue smoke... to that of what it SHOULD have looked like as a pale blue.

He'd most definitely gone wrong somewhere. The best he could do know was pour over it all again and try to figure out where the mishap had happened, whilst feeling quite frustrated with himself in the meantime.

SUMMER FOREVER

Valentina carefully read the instructions about three times to roughly understand it - and just hoped she wouldn't make any mistakes. Potions wasn't her strong suit but she could always ask the professor for help if necessary. She stood up to head over to the table. She gathered all of the required ingredients before heading back to her desk, thinking it was time to get started.

Um. First step was milk. Okay. She emptied it into a glass beaker as instructed and.. heat it on medium heat. Done. That was simple enough. She filled the cauldron with water, carefully checking to make sure it was exactly half. Ah, easy. The blonde waited for another minute or so before pouring the milk into the cauldron. Now moving on to the next step. She chopped the fluxweed, as finely as possible before adding it to the cauldron. 7 times?? Why seven times? What would happen if they stirred it six times or five?? But, she really was planning to follow the instructions properly so seven it is.

Now, she added the dog hair into the cauldron and watched as the contents turned a green colour. Phew. So far, so good. Exactly seven minutes?? She waited impatiently, turning to look at the clock every few seconds.

... seven minutes over. She added three of the feathers.. and to wait for another seven minutes. Boooooring. The fourth year sighed, looking at the clock again.

It was truly uncanny how often he was misjudged, not that he was aware of her thoughts right now. Nemesis Upstead had tried, unsuccessfully as it turns out, to coach and mentor the littlest Flamsteed in the art of...well...not being AS bothered by the words of others...but the truth of the matter was that Atlas cared a little too much while pretending that he did not. His track record with Slytherin girls was pretty terrible though...which almost felt like some sort of pseudo karma since the Sorting Hat had been debating between Gryffindor and Slytherin for him. It was like they, Slytherin females, had a sixth sense that registered someone rejecting the house and therefore they were petty against him. Oh. Hey. THAT was it. It wasn't HIS fault but the Sorting Hat's.

It was illogical and he was sticking with it.

But he still was left wondering what it was he said that made her go from Dr. Jekyll to Mr. Hyde.

Reading over the instructions was at least something he had confidence in, though he found the name of the spell kind of funny in that it sounded more like the sort of incantation that would be associated with a music spell or something. Then had him feeling anxious because they were being instructed to perform a spell he hadn't ever tried before AND did not really know what exactly it did. He was zoning out a little when the professor came around to him and read him like an open book. Which then meant that the third year nearly jumped out of his skin when his station was suddenly drummed on.

"M-M-Me?" Atlas stammered while idly smoothing his Gryffindor tie. "Yeah. Fine." Not about to snitch and create an even worse image for himself than the one he already had projected upon himself. "Just..." Quick quick QUICK. "Um...just wondering...what exactly this spell does. Recordo."

And he really was not good with new spells. Things tended to go kaboom.

His ingredients collected and arranged on his station in order of use (such straightforward organization helped with the nerves), Atlas got his milk into the beaker and burner on to slowly heat up the milk while gently sloshing it around every 10 to 20 seconds.

SPOILER!!: notes aka Katherine's check list
Ingredients
  • 1 10mL syringe full of regular cow milk
  • 1 gram of fluxweed (picked on full a moon)
  • 1 handful of a tame dog's neck fur
  • 6 Jobberknoll feathers
  • 3 tea spoons of Armadillo bile
  • 3 grams of a well-whisked Runespoor egg
  • 3 aconites' roots (aka wolfsbane)

Instructions
  1. Empty the syringe of milk into a glass beaker and heat for 3 minutes on medium flame (separately from your cauldron)
  2. Fill the cauldron HALF full with water and add the milk
  3. Set the cauldron on low flame
  4. Chop the fluxweed well and add it
  5. Stir 7 times clockwise with a metal stirrer
  6. Sprinkle the dog fur evenly (in about 10 seconds) The potion should turn a mossy green color.
  7. Wait for exactly 7 minutes (keep track of the seconds using the clock in the classroom)
  8. Add 3 of the Jobberknoll feathers
  9. Wait for exactly 7 minutes again. The potion should turn a dark purple color if brewed correctly at this stage.
  10. Add the other 3 of the feathers
  11. Set the burner on medium heat
  12. Add the Armadillo bile one tea spoon at a time. Potion should turn navy blue at this point.
  13. Stir 7 times counter clockwise with a metal stirrer
  14. Add the Runespoor egg
  15. Wait for 7 minutes and 7 seconds
  16. Cast 'Recordo' (wand movement - clockwise circle over the potion)
  17. Add the aconite roots one by one
  18. If done correctly, it will exude a faint blue smoke

Hogwarts RPG Name:
Ashley "Ash" C. Fox
Fifth Year

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

The potion turned a navy blue color. Thankfully, Ash knew what color 'navy' meant. It was an actual color, as opposed to 'dark purple' which was about a million billion colors.

Step thirteen... Ash turned seven times counterclockwise with a metal stirrer. That was a simple instruction. Much easier than baking. In baking, the instructions were like 'stir until combined'. WHAT DID THAT MEAN??? They never said how many times to stir, or in which direction, or with what kind of utensil. That's why Ash got high grades in potions, but was incapable of making normal looking cupcakes.

Step fourteen... she added the runespoor egg, extremely grateful that it had been whisked already for her. Wasn't a runespoor like, a three headed snake thing? That sounded cool. But it must be super hard to collect runespoor eggs. Hm.

Step fifteen... waiting again. More note-taking, her notes now covering most of her forearm. That was the number seven again. Why did she have to wait for so LONG? She admired the color of the potion. She thought about her next steps. She thought about her pretend big brother. She thought about how seven minutes and seven seconds was a long time to be dead, but a short time to die in. She held her wand at the ready. Seven... six... five... four... three... two... one... zero.

Step sixteen... Ash cast Recordo, which was about the easiest part of this entire thing. It was just a spell. She was great at spells. She was good at potions, too, but she had to work harder for that. The only spell that she had consistently failed to cast was Expecto patronum. She had messed up many potions over and over again for months until she got them right.

Step seventeen... Ash added the aconite roots very very very very VERY carefully. She did not want to die, no thank you. She knew the professor said drinking the potion wouldn't kill them(what about eating the ingredients?), but, y'know, she was Ash. She was very good at almost dying and she knew from experience and obrservation that 'what doesn't kill you makes you stronger' was at best oversimplified and at worst a flat-out lie. Accidentally ingesting aconite was not going to make her stronger.

Step eighteen... Was that... yes, it was a faint blue smoke. She squinted at it to make sure her eyes weren't playing tricks on her. Was that the right shade of blue? Ash had to remind herself that the instructions didn't specify cerulean or cobalt or baby blue or royal blue or sky blue or any kind of blue at all. It just said 'blue'. Well... it was definitely blue.

So... she thought she did it right, seeing as she followed the instructions and the smoke was blue. It irritated her that she didn't know exactly how the smoke was supposed to look, but she was relieved. This had gone pretty well, in her opinion. Stressful but good.
