Potions taught by the illustrious Potion Mistress
Kris Airlia

Basic Sleeping Draft

Use/Effect:
The basic sleeping draft is to be used before bedtime in order to aid in sleeping. However, it should not be used longer than a week or two or one may start falling asleep at odd times of the day.

Ingredients:
  • water (500mL)
  • lavender (a pinch; crushed)
  • chamomile (a handful; crushed)
  • for nightmares: purslane (a pinch)
  • for more powerful brew: ginger (a pinch)

Instructions:
  • Bring water to a slow boil.
  • Add lavender and stir 21 times, counter-clockwise.
  • Add chamomile and let simmer for 20 minutes (potion should be pale, clear, purple with a tint of green, though the green may not always be observable)
  • For nightmares: add a pinch of purslane and stir 5 times, counter-clockwise
  • For a more powerful brew: add a pinch of ginger and stir 5 times, counter-clockwise

Notes:
Potion can be stored for up to a month, though it is advisable to brew a fresh batch weekly.

Wit-Sharpening Potion

Use/Effect:
The Wit-Sharpening Potion is used to aid in concentration. It is especially useful if taken before an important exam.

Ingredients:
  • water (500mL)
  • scarab beetles (coarsely ground; 2)
  • ginger root (cut; 5g)
  • armadillo bile (9 drops)

Instructions:
  • Bring water to a delicate simmer
  • Add scarab beetles and stir 5 times, clockwise
  • Allow to simmer for 5 minutes
  • Add ginger without stirring and simmer for 20 minutes
  • Allow solution to cool, stirring 7 times every 3 minutes, alternating clockwise and counter-clockwise stirrings
  • When heat can no longer be felt when a hand is placed above the potion, add armadillo bile
  • Allow potion to sit for 8 minutes (potion will smell foul)

Notes:
  • This potion is sensitive to temperature so be sure to pay particular attention to the fire while brewing.
  • In order to make the potion taste more pleasant, put a peppermint leaf upon the tongue and then, sip the potion. However, do not put the peppermint in the potion itself as steeping peppermint in the potion could alter the properties of the potion.
  • Depending upon the brewing, one should feel the effects of the potion within 10 minutes, though it can take up to one hour.

Confounding (Confusing) Concoction: mild formulation

Use/Effect:
There aren’t many, if any, good uses for this potion, though it is not illegal. It could be used on prisoners or enemies but, as it has unpredictable effects, it is not recommended for such purposes. The confusing concoction is usually studied merely for honing brewing technique or to ensure proper brewing of the antidote.

Ingredients:
  • water (500mL)
  • jobberknoll feathers (2 barbs)
  • leeches (juiced; 1-2)

Instructions:
  • Bring water to a boil
  • Separate the barbs from the shafts of 2 jobberknoll feathers
  • Place barbs in boiling water and stir 12 times clockwise and 7 times counter-clockwise
  • Boil for 30 minutes
  • Add leech juice by squeezing one leech into the cauldron and stir in an unpredictable fashion
  • Keep stirring until potion should thickens (within 5 minutes)
  • If potion does not thicken after 10 minutes of stirring, add another leech and continue to stir unpredictably until thickened
  • If potion has still not thickened after an additional 10 minutes, start another brew

Notes:
  • This particular brew is a mild variation of the Confounding Concoction but, should be effective for several hours if an antidote is not administered.
  • It can be very difficult to discern whether one has ingested confounding concoction. Depending upon how strongly it is brewed and the person it is administered to, a person may only show a tendency to forget things and the effects will wear off in a few hours. Or, with a stronger version, a person can become completely confused and disoriented and could possibly suffer from amnesia.
  • There are no discerning smells or tastes so this potion can be easily disguised and given to the unwary.
  • One side effect of this potion is an increased thirst.
  • People under the effects of the confounding concoction can be very unpredictable.

Antidote for the Confounding Concoction

Use/Effect:
As the name implies, the antidote for the confounding concoction is a potion which counteracts the effects of the confounding concoction.

Ingredients:
  • water (500mL)
  • jobberknoll feathers (2 shafts)
  • galangal (powdered; 5g)
  • leeches (dried, broken up; 1)

Instructions:
  • Bring water to a boil
  • Add jobberknoll feather shafts and boil for 10 minutes with constant clockwise stirring
  • Light galangal powder on fire in mortar until browned and emoty into cauldron
  • Stir vigorously for 5 minutes counter-clockwise
  • Simmer for 15 minutes
  • Stir dried leech into potion (direction is not important)
  • Stir continually for 2 minutes
  • Remove from heat and allow to cool before ingesting

Notes:
You won’t be able to break the dried leeches up evenly but, it will not effect the potions efficacy.

Hair-changing Potion: mild formulation

Use/Effect:
The mild formulation of the Hair-Changing Potion is used to alter the coloration of a person’s hair.

Ingredients:
  • water (500 mL)
  • belladonna (2 g; crushed)
  • nettles (5 g; dried, powdered)
  • moonstone

Instructions:
  • place moonstone in cauldron and add water
  • boil water for 5 minutes
  • add belladonna and nettles
  • boil for 5 minutes
  • reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes
  • stir, 20 full strokes clockwise followed by 20 full strokes counter-clockwise
  • place the clear potion in a goblet
  • dip the very tip of wand in potion and incant, "Coloro!" while concentrating on the color you want the hair
  • rinse hair in 200 mL of potion
  • wait 5 minutes for color change

Notes:
  • Belladonna (also known as deadly nightshade) is highly poisonous and this potion should not be ingested.
  • Remaining potion should be used within 24 hours.
  • Hair color will remain for 24-48 hours.
  • Moonstone may be reused.

Deflating Draft

Use/Effect:
The deflating draft is the antidote for the swelling solution. It decreases swelling and size.

Ingredients:
  • water (500mL)
  • wood sorrel (whole; a handful)
  • sagebrush (whole; a handful) Lafay's addition= Substitute with 2 snargaluff pods for faster/stronger results
  • aloe (fresh; 10 drops)
  • galangal (powdered; 5g)

Instructions:
  • Bring water to a boil
  • Add wood sorrel and sagebrush. Do not stir but, ensure that they are completely submerged and boil for 10 minutes.
  • YANK the 2 snargaluff pod from the flesher by themselves without being eaten in the process.
  • Add whole pods in also making sure they are submerged and boil for an additional 5 minutes.
  • Lower temperature to simmer and add freshly squeezed aloe.
  • Allow to simmer but, for no more than one hour without stirring.
  • Light galangal powder on fire in mortar until browned and empty into cauldron.
  • Stir vigorously for 5 minutes, counter-clockwise.
  • Take cauldron off fire to cool

Notes:
This potion is for external use only and should not be ingested.

Swelling Solution

Use/Effect:
The swelling solution causes objects or parts of objects to swell and enlarge. However, it does not work on non-living things.

Ingredients:
  • water (500mL)
  • houndstongue (ground; 0.5g)
  • ginger (roots, thinly sliced; 5g)
  • lionfish quills (whole; 3)
  • rattlesnake fang (crushed; 1)
  • dragon saliva (1 drop)

Instructions:
  • Bring water to a slow boil in a pewter cauldron.
  • Add houndstongue and stir 22 times in a steady clockwise motion.
  • Add lionfish quills but, do not stir.
  • Allow solution to slowly boil and after about 5 minutes, the solution should be a dull yellow.
  • Add dragon saliva. It will remain on the surface for a few minutes. Wait for it to sink before adding the next ingredient.
  • Crush the rattlesnake fang and mix with ground ginger before adding them to the potion. Stir clockwise for 2 minutes.
  • Remove from the fire and continue to stir for an additional 10 minutes.

Notes:
  • This potion is for external use only and should not be ingested.
  • The swelling solution is not like the engorgement charm. It is an irritant, not just a swelling in size.
  • Where ever this potion contacts the skin it will cause swelling.

Anti-Love (Delusting) Potion from last term
  • bring 500mL water to a boil
  • add 5 drops essence of violet and stir clockwise 5X
  • add 7 drops essence of rose thorn and stir counterclockwise 7X
  • reduce heat to simmer mixture for 10 minutes, stirring counter-clockwise 2X every 2 minutes
  • add 2 raven feathers and boil for 5 minutes while stirring counter-clockwise
(stopping point: remove cauldron from heat and cover, mixture will be viable for up to one month)
  • add 20 translucently thin slices of skinkroot
  • simmer for 10 minutes or until potion turns pink
  • add 3 rat eyes
  • remove from heat and stir until black streaks appear

Love Potion #12
  • bring 500mL water to a boil
  • add 7 petals from a red rose
  • add 5 drops essence of violet and stir counterclockwise 12X
  • add 4 cloves and reduce heat to a simmer for 12 minutes, stirring clockwise 3X every 3 minutes
  • bring mixture back to a boil for 7 minutes, without stirring
  • add 2 canary flight feathers and 4 canary down feathers
  • reduce heat to a simmer, once more, for 10 min, without stirring
  • add 3 newt eyes, remove from heat, and stir counterclockwise until the potion is cooled. You should end up with a light pink potion

Calming Draught

Use/Effect:
To calm and soothe the drinker

Ingredients:
  • 1 pint water
  • 6 drops fluxweed oil
  • Inner membrane and fluid from 3 bloodroot stems
  • 1 Valerian root, minced
  • 1 drachm calendula pollen
  • 3 skullcap leaves
  • 1/2 drachm powdered root of asphodel (scant)
  • 1 Hyacinth flower, whole
  • 1 ounce slime from the belly of a sprightly frog
  • 1 sprig of peppermint
  • 4 drop glumbumble fluid (take care not to overuse!)

Instructions:

**STAGE 1**
  • Add 6 drops fluxweed oil to warm water.
  • Split the bloodroot stems lengthwise with your knives and scrape out all fluid and fibrous material from inside the stems. Crush with mortar and pestle into a fine paste and add to the cauldron.
  • Stir slowly until a light steam rises from the cauldron, alternating clockwise and counterclockwise stirring.

**STAGE 2**
  • Mince the Valerian root and add it to the potion.
  • Add calendula pollen, stirring three times clockwise.
  • Shred the skullcap lengthwise, and slowly add it to the potion
  • Bring the temperature back up until the steam is rising again, stirring clockwise slowly. It should be a light blue-green at this stage.
  • Professor's note: Remember your intent-- concentrate on being calm and infusing your work with a calm, deliberate result.
  • Add asphodel -- you should see a bright blue flash of light in your cauldron

Potions taught by the prominent Potion Master

Fire-Breathing Potion

Use/Effect: Tickles and warms up the person you've breathed on pleasantly, cures the breather from small illnesses like flu and fever

Ingredients
  • 3 goose feathers (chopped WELL that they look like powder)
  • 5 centimetre square of parasites (mycosis fungus)
  • Roughly 2 centimetre square fire-crab shell (prepared)
  • One fire slug
  • 8 drops of salamander blood
  • Some flobberworm mucus (depends on how much rigidity one wants—no more than a tablespoon)

Instructions
  1. Fill your cauldron 1/3 with water.
  2. Add powdered goose feather.
  3. Stir clock-wise until it looks homogenous.
  4. Turn the heater to high.
  5. Get your pestle and mortar, crush the parasites, fill the mortar halfway with water and add it slowly to the potion.
  6. Stir counter clock-wise for 7 times and turn off the heater.
  7. Let it cool until no vapour is seen. This should take about 5 minutes.
  8. Do not add the fire crab shell! Hold it with a metal spoon, lower it nicely into the potion just inside the surface—make sure it doesn’t splash water AT ALL—then start stirring 1 time clockwise, 1 time counter clockwise for 12 times in total. Each stir should take about ten seconds for it to spread thoroughly. Once done with stirring, get it out and put it away.
  9. Wait for another minute, then add the slugs—stay away from the cauldron as far as you can. If you’ve done everything correctly, the surface should explode harmlessly and start burning. Put it out with your breath ONLY.
  10. Add 8 drops of salamander blood.
  11. Alternate between two stirs counter-clock wise, two stirs clock-wise. Take two seconds’ break between each group of stirs. Repeat for four times. (So you should stir 16 times in total.)
  12. Add flobberworm’s mucus to keep it in your mouth better (no more than a tablespoon)
  13. Enjoy.

Strength Potion

Effect: Enables you to be as strong as to lift a muggle car (roughly a ton) for half a day

Ingredients
  • 2 kilograms of dragon heart (a few grams more/less doesn’t matter)
  • 1 pomegranate
  • A cup of re’em blood

  • Powdered griffin claw
  • 2 snake fangs

Instructions
  1. Add 2 litres of water and the unicorn tail hairs one by one

  3. Wait until it boils and add pomegranate
  4. Turn the heater to medium and wait for five minutes. In the meantime, mix re’em and salamander blood in a bowl and stir them five times clockwise and five times counter clockwise and crush griffin claw (doesn't have to be a perfect powder - just crush as well as you can withOUT magic).
  5. Add the blood mixture slowly and THEN, the powdered griffin claw IMMEDIATELY.
  6. Wait for ten minutes and add one snake fang
  7. Put the fire out and add the other snake fang
  8. Stir counter clockwise once
  9. Drink a cup of the potion in one go, while still hot

Extra Notes
  • Tastes like metal
  • Good for anaemia or lack of iron

  • To conserve for a week after brewing, add a cup of ice from pure water
  • The colour is bright yellow
  • For the first few minutes after drinking, sit and let your body and muscles adjust to it. Once you feel fresh, go around being super strong, and don't worry: you can control it.
  • You can omit the heart part by adding a glass of water, counting to 18 and adding pomegranate. You can also not mix Re’em blood at all and add another pomegranate instead, but this will reduce the effect to one tenth.

Amortentia

Effect: Love potions cause a infatuation or obsession for the brewer or the first person seen. Amortentia is the most powerful.

Ingredients
  • 8 flower heads of sneezewort (seperate the petals beforehand)
  • 8 berries of atropa belladonna
  • 8 chopped leaves of Alihotsy (prepared beforehand)
  • One frozen ashwinder egg broken in 8
  • 8 tea spoons of powdered moonstone
  • All the thorns of 8 roses
  • 8 drops of salamander blood
  • 8 table spoons of peppermint

Instructions
  1. Prepare the sneezewort, alihotsy and moonstone.
  2. Fill the cauldron with purified water and add the sneezewort petals
  3. Light a fire under the cauldron and set it to maximum
  4. Add the heads of the sneezewort
  5. Stir 8 times clockwise with a metal stick
  6. Add the berries of atropa bellandonna one by one
  7. Sprinkle Alihotsy leaves in a circle in clockwise direction

  12. Stir vigorously clockwise with a metal stick until the colour is purple
  13. Sprinkle the moonstone in the middle of the cauldron
  14. Throw all the thorns in quickly
  15. Add the drops of salamander blood one by one: with each drop, observe that the potion turns to its distinctive mother-of-pearl sheen.
  16. Add the peppermint spoon by spoon. Stir clockwise with a metal stick slowly until it dissolves.
  17. Wave your wand again.
  18. Put off the fire when you see the spiral steams and smell its aroma.

Extra notes
  • The duration of the effects (usually up to 24 hours) vary depending on factors such as the weight of the person drinking the potion and the attractiveness of the person with whom the potion is supposed to make the drinker obsessed. The effects wear off naturally over time, but can be renewed by administering further doses of potion. Therefore, there is no overdose.
  • The effect is near instantaneous: the drinker appears "pale and sickly" and becomes obsessed with the brewer or the first person seen and excited or dangerously unstable towards others.
  • A hate potion can cancel out love potions and vice versa. There is also a proper antidote.
  • The brewer doesn't have to be present for the effect if it's that sort of love potion.
  • The drinker does not forget what he or she did while under its influence.
  • Love potions mature over time; so the longer it is kept, the stronger it will be.
  • Amortentia's characteristics are a distinctive mother-of-pearl sheen and spiral steams. Its aroma is different for everyone and reminds each person of the things that they find most attractive, even if they don't acknowledge or are unaware of their fondness themselves.
  • The smell of Amortentia can change as you see new things and people.
  • Life advice from Blaise Bellaire: You should NEVER give a love potion to a girl who's bigger than you and throws a harder punch 'cause when it wears off she'll remember everything and beat the living Circe out of you. It causes strong dislike after.

  • 12 Citrus leaves
  • 10 Lavender leaves
  • 8 Lavender buds
  • Two squares of cheesecloth

Method:
  • Add water to cauldron, bring to a boil
  • Add two Ginkgo Biloba seeds to a small bowl, add two tablespoons of boiling water from the cauldron and leave for ten minutes to soften.
  • Slice the GB leaves into thin strips (approximately 2mm wide) with your knife and sprinkle into cauldron.
  • Grind in mortar and pestle until you create a paste, and add this to the cauldron.
  • Prepare the leaves/flowers
  • Add in the leaves and flowers one by one. Some might sink, others will remain floating. Leave for fifteen minutes.
  • In the meantime, light a tealight candle and put to eye height (to avoid straining neck and back), an arms width from the body (prop on books if needed)
  • Gaze at the candle flame until your eyes feel like they need to blink, then close your eyes. Concentrate on the image of the candle in your mind (the after image). Repeat for fifteen minutes.
  • Pour the wax from the candle into the cauldron.
  • Cast the incantation Mentis Apertus (men-tees ah-peh-rr-tus), whilst circling the want over the cauldron, perform three times.
  • Remove all leaves and flowers from the cauldron, adding them to the mortar and pestle. Grind them until they form a herby paste, and add it back to the cauldron.
  • Stir the potion 20 times, slowly, clockwise, with a wooden stirrer.
  • Remove it from the heat.
  • Layer two pieces of cheesecloth material over your strainer, to catch more of the solid ingredients. Strain the potion into your vials.
  • By the end, your potion should yield 500 milliliters. Divide this into 50-milliliter vials. Hand one up for marking and you may take the others.

Level: Beginner - Intermediate
Characteristics: Clear, some green sediment may remain
Information: Dose is 50ml, less than would have limited effect, overdose may cause the opposite effect.
The effect is mostly dependent on the concentration during the candle gazing.
This concoction will last one year.

Antidote to Uncommon Poisons No. 005 (Hospital Grade)

Use/Effect(s): This healing potion cures the effects brought about uncommon poisons. This formula has been altered to have a stronger effect, covering a wider range of poisons known to wizard-kind.

Ingredients:
  • 50 ml Distilled Water
  • 14 ml Liquefied Antimony
  • 32 grams Stargrass
  • 302 ml Boom Berry Juice
  • 23 drops Essence of Dittany
  • 5 pieces Fire Seeds
  • 15 pieces Pure Rock Salt
  • 5 strips Wiggentree Bark
  • 5 pieces Fresh Betony Leaves

Procedure:
  1. Clean all equipment to be used: Cauldron, Scales, Stirrers, Phials, Etc.;
  2. Bring 50 ml Distilled Water to a boil in medium heat;
  3. Add finely chopped 32 grams of Stargrass. Use a silver dagger for this step;
  4. Add 302 ml Boom Berry Juice and stir counter-clockwise for three minutes pause 5 seconds, and continue to stir the solution counter-clockwise for another two minutes. Use a glass stirrer for this step;
  5. Remove the stirrer from the cauldron, and add 23 drops of Essence of Dittany into the solution;
  6. Let 3 minutes pass, and then adjust the heat to low. Slowly add 5 fire seeds into the solution after 2 minutes. Use your dragon-hide gloves for this procedure;
  7. Add 15 pieces of pure rock salt one by one, and stir the solution counter-clockwise for five minutes until the solution turns Primrose Yellow. This will indicate that the solution has been activated to counter the effect of poisoning;
  8. Lay 5 strips of Wiggentree bark on the surface of the solution, and slowly push it one by one to the inner wall of your cauldron. Turn the heat back to medium and wait for the potion to boil;
  9. Once bubbles appear, crush 5 fresh Betony Leaves with your hand, and add it to the boiling liquid. The potion should turn a shade of Sapphire Blue;
  10. Wait five minutes, and then turn off the heat. Let the potion cool for 15 minutes, and then bottle it in glass phials using a clean Pasteur Pipette (dropper). Label your potions;
  11. Scrape off the dreg at the bottom of the cauldron, and pack it in a tin box. Draw the Asclepius Staff with your wand, while saying the incantation: Venenum Inverto (Reverse the Poison: nullify the effects and poison itself).

Notes of interest:
  1. The quantity of each ingredient is a product of Five; the number for Healing;
  2. The stirring movement is counter-clockwise; activating the healing properties of each ingredient, ultimately reversing the effects of the poison;
  3. The healing properties of each ingredient becomes more potent because of the presence of Fire Seeds. Said ingredient is born of the alchemical element fire, which represents life;
  4. Salt is one of the Three Principles in Alchemy or one of the component s of the Universal Language of Nature. Naturally it is a product of the Earth and Water elements—the same elements associated with humans and beings. Salt can preserve (the body of the victim) and corrodes (to nullify the poison. In this context, it will absorb the dark/evil energies present), thus making the potion more potent;
  5. The dreg can be used together with the potion to enhance its effect. The Asclepius Staff* should be drawn on the victim's tongue using the dreg while reciting the incantation: Venenum Inverto
*The Asclepius Staff is an alchemical and universal medical symbol for healing and/or doctors in the muggle world.

Pompion potion

Effect
Turns the drinker's head in to a pumpkin temporarily.

Ingredients
2 cups pumpkin innards, densely packed (sorted so no seeds)
3 flitterby moths
100g fresh bouncing bulb, stunned if necessary
4g fresh foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) flowers, petals only
10 fresh pumpkin seeds

Recipe
1.Use diffindo to cut open the pumpkin.
2. Using a metal spoon, scoop out the innards, pulling out the seeds and putting to one side.
3. Put two densely packed cups of pumpkin innards in the bottom your cauldron with a cup of water. Set over medium heat.
4. Whilst waiting for the cauldron to come to a light simmer, grind 3 dried flitterby moths to a fine powder in your pestle and mortar. Add these to the cauldron and stir clockwise until the contents turns grass green (4 complete stirs should do the trick).
5. Stun your bouncing bulb. Peel off the purple skin, and chop finely with a silver knife. Weigh out 100g. Add to your cauldron and stir enough to incorporate.
6. Let your potion simmer for 30 minutes. You may carve your pumpkin whilst you wait.
7. Pluck the petals from the foxgloves, and weigh out 4g. Crush to release the juices and chop roughly. Add to the cauldron, and stir until potion changes to a dark purple. Wash hands after handling the foxglove - it is toxic if consumed alone.
8. Add the pumpkin seeds one at a time, stirring anticlockwise between each. The potion should turn a bright orange.

Taste perception-altering potion

Effect
Manipulates the taste sensors

Recipe
On page 63 of the textbook

To use
Requires an incantation to work. Gustum followed by what the sensor you want to change, and then what you want to change it into. The wand movement is a simple clockwise circle over the top of the container of potion.

e.g. Gustum acidulus dulcis will mimic the effects of the miracle berry, and make sour taste sweet.

Dulcis – sweet
Acerbus – bitter
Acidulus – sour
Salsus – salty
Umami

Pollinator-friendly pest-deterrent

Use
A pest deterrent that discourages unwanted visitors, including animals and humans, whilst still attracting those all-important insect pollinators

Ingredients
Castor oil
5 tsp beetle eyes
5 whole beetles, ground to a fine powder
1 cup crup urine
½ cup - corpse flower spadix scrapings
⅓ cup - corpse flower spathe scrapings
Toe nail clippings
1 tsp minced garlic, using a silver knife

Recipe
1. Add a glug of castor oil to the cauldron, swirling it up the sides a few times before putting it back over a low heat.
2. Add the beetle eyes. Once the eyes have dulled in colour, stir in the ground whole beetles and the crup urine. The potion should turn a bright red.
3. Add spadix scrapings. Stir twice anti-clockwise.
4. Add spathe scrapings. Stir three times clockwise.
5. Sprinkle over the nail clippings (if using) and simmer for five minutes. Now would be a good time to mince the garlic.
6. Add in the garlic, and beat the potion well. It should seize - don’t be alarmed when this happens, and continue stirring until the potion resembles small brown granules, not dissimilar to instant coffee.

Flesh-regeneration ointment

Use
Heals damage from the flesh-eating hex. A close relative of the Wiggenweld potion, with a few ingredient substitutions to allow for a more potent and topical application. Of particular note, blue-bottle fly larvae, for billy-wig sting slime, and powdered silver for the unicorn horn. Blue-bottle fly larvae are important in healing for what’s known as maggot therapy. They’re particularly good at eating dead flesh, and only dead flesh. The powdered silver helps combat dark magic, but also has antimicrobial properties, so helps keep the wound clean.

Ingredients
500 ml of water
500 ml of horklump juice
5 drops flobberworm mucus
10 blue-bottle fly larvae
1 tbsp finely chopped rosemary
100g pickled murtlap tentacles
10 drops of honeywater
5 drops tea tree oil
3 leeches
2 cups of shredded dittany
3 inches of Wiggentree bark, grated
250 ml salamander blood
¼ teaspoon powdered silver
250 ml boom berry juice

Recipe
Remember to work with aseptic techniques throughout.
1. Clean your cauldron with Scourgify, and then sterilise it using Incendio Tria
2. Add 500ml water and 500ml horklump juice and bring to a rolling boil
3. Add 5 drops of flobberworm mucus
4. Drop in the larvae one at a time
5. Strip the leaves off the rosemary (leaving the woody stalk behind), chop finely, and sprinkle into the potion. Stir twice clockwise.
6. Slice the murtlap tentacles lengthways, toss with the honeywater, and add to the cauldron.
7. Add 5 drops of tea tree oil.
8. Stir once clockwise, once counter-clockwise.
9. Crush the three dried leeches in your pestle and mortar and sprinkle it in.
10. Add two cups of finely shredded dittany, and immediately add in the grated Wiggentree bark.
11. Slowly pour in the salamander blood in a figure of eight motion.
12. Add ¼ teaspoon of powdered silver and stir three times following the figure of 8 shape you made with the salamander blood. The potion’s colour should fade to pale grey.
13. Turn of the heat. Add the boom berry juice, and stir clockwise until the potion resembles a thick white ointment. It now needs to be left for 24 hours at room temperature before it’s safe to use.

Basic bruise paste

Use
A basic bruise paste. Not the most potent, but the ingredients are readily available and the method straightforward.

Ingredients
1 cup water
½ cup Arnica root
Petals of 3 dandelion heads
3 tbsp dried comfrey leaves
5 white willow (Salix alba) leaves
1 inch piece of willow bark

Recipe
1. Add the water and arnica root to the cauldron, and let seep for 3 minutes.
2. Sprinkle in the petals of 3 dandelion heads
3. Add three level tablespoons of dried comfrey leaves and stir three times clockwise. At this point, the potion should turn a faint lilac.
4. Crush the willow leaves between your fingers and drop in the potion one at a time, stirring anticlockwise between each.
5. Add the willow bark.
6. Simmer for 10 minutes until the potion resembles a thick, yellow paste.

Magical shoe polish

Use:
To help maintain, restore and weatherproof shoes.

Ingredients
100g beeswax
2 tbsp flobberworm mucus
2 tbsp walnut oil
1 tsp charcoal powder
5 drops of ammoniacum

Method
1. Chop the beeswax into chunks and add to the cauldron. Add the flobberworm mucus and walnut oil, before putting the cauldron over a low heat.
2. Sprinkle in the charcoal powder, and stir the mixture twice in an anticlockwise direction with a wooden spoon.
3. Add five drops of ammoniacum, stirring twice clockwise after each drop. Take the wooden spoon out, and leave on low heat for a further 10 minutes.
4. When you see a light change of texture on the surface, turn the heat off, and then with a rippling motion of you wand, cast 'luceo'.
5. Ladle polish into containers with a wide opening at the top (i.e. not vials) and leave to cool.

Volubilis Potion

Use
Alters the drinker's voice. Restores their voice if they have lost it, and thus will end the effects of the Silencing Charm.

Ingredients
50g fluxweed
50g billywig stings
8 drops honeywater
3 mint sprigs
25g stewed mandrake
30ml syrup of hellebore

Recipe
1. Put 50g fluxweed and 50g billywig stings in your mortar and grind into a smooth red paste. Add to the cauldron and heat until it turns green.
2. Add the honeywater one drop at a time until the liquid turns a bright pink. Simmer for 5 minutes, or until the potion turns orange.
3. Add three mint sprigs, stirring between each. The mixture will turn green-blue as each sprig is added, but should return to bright pink after stirring.
4. Chop the stewed Mandrake into fine slices with a silver knife, and sprinkle over the potion.
5. Pour in 30ml of syrup of hellebore. The potion will turn blue. Simmer the potion for 15 minutes, after which it should have turned a sunshine yellow.
6. With your wand, touch your wand to your throat and then sweep it over the cauldron from left to right. Once finished, the potion should release some sparks.

Oculus Potion

Use
Restores the drinker's eyesight. Counters the conjunctivitis curse.
Administer directly into the eye with a dropper tool if possible.

Notes
This potion does not heal eyesight beyond that which you normally have - there's another recently developed potion for that.

Ingredients
1 cup murtlap essence
5g dried ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba)
5g dried eyebright (Euphrasia officinalis)
50g grated cucumber
1 moly flower
5ml moondew sap

Recipe

1. Bring the murtlap essence to a low simmer, and sprinkle in the ginkgo and eyebright. Stir twice clockwise and leave to simmer for five minutes. Meanwhile, grate the cucumber.
2. Once the potion has turned pale lavender, add the cucumber. Stir twice anti-clockwise. The potion should turn a royal purple.
3. Drop the moly flower in the centre of the cauldron. Simmer for exactly three and a half minutes before turning off the heat.
4. Once the temperature has dropped to 24°C, stir in the moondew sap with a figure of eight motion. Leave to fully cool before using, by which time the purple should have faded to lilac.

Kuznetsov indicator

Use
Tests for basic toxins, turning from lime green to bright pink in the presence of toxin. Can be used with titration to estimate how concentrated a toxin is.

Experiment
1. Show that the Kuznetsov indicator is indeed an indicator for toxins.
On the side bench are some baneberries, which are known to be poisonous. Mash them up with some water with your pestle and mortar. Use a pipette to transfer some of the liquid to a vial. Add three drops of Kuznetsov indicator, put the lid on the vial and shake. The solution should turn bright pink in the presence of the baneberry toxin. Then add 50 ml of antidote. The solution should turn lime green.
2. Add a sample of the toxin to test to a conical flask. Add 3 drops of Kuznetsov indicator and swirl. It should be lime green.
3. Set up a titration column with antidote and note how much antidote there is in the column to start with.
4. Use the titration column to add antidote to the sample of toxin one drop at a time. Swirl the conical flask between drops, and stop adding drops as soon as the colour change occurs. Note down how much antidote is left in the titration column.
5. Calculate antidote used as (end level - start level). e.g if start = 11.5ml and end = 12.4ml, then 0.9ml of antidote has been used.

Soothing Solution

Use
A potion closely related to the standard calming and sleeping draughts, but with a less potent formulation that means it can be safely used to settle young children and small animals

Ingredients
70ml flobberworm mucus
3 lavender flower heads (leave five inches of stalk)
4 chamomile leaves (decent-size)
3 valerian sprigs
One whole sopophorous bean

Recipe
1. Heat flobberworm mucus in a cauldron over low heat.
2. Using your silver knife, finely chop the chamomile leaves and measure a tightly packed tablespoon's worth of leaves before sprinkling them over the surface of the flobberworm mucus. Simmer for five minutes.
3. While the potion is simmering, carefully braid the lavender heads together. When the five minutes are up, add the whole braid into the cauldron and stir twice clockwise.
4. Add three valerian sprigs to the potion then turn up the heat.
5. As soon as bubbles are seen at the bottom of the cauldron, add the whole sopophorous bean to the potion. Once the potion has turned a turquoise blue stir briskly seven times in a clockwise direction using a glass stirring rod until the potion turns a pale blue-grey.
6. Turn off the burner and set the timer for three minutes to allow for the potion to cool. Once the three minutes are up, sweep your wand over the top of the cauldron, keeping the motion calm and smooth and your wrist flat.

Absorbent granules for magical messes

Purpose
To safely clean up (unknown) potion spills without using a wand

Ingredients
250ml flobberworm mucus (binding)
50g agar jelly powder (absorbent)
250g sawdust (absorbent)
5g silver powder (neutralises toxins)

Recipe
1. Light your burner using a spill and the burner at the front of class
2. Gently heat the flobberworm mucus.
3. Stir in the agar jelly until it has dissolved.
4. Add sawdust and silver powder.
5. Leave to cool.

Use
1. Put on PPE - dragon hide gloves, goggles, lab coat.
2. Spread a thick layer of granules (at least an inch deep) over the sludge, wait 5 minutes for them to work.
3. Scoop the granules (which have swollen and now look like jelly) up, and put in a trash bag.
4. Wash down surfaces down manually with water and soap.
5. Dry surfaces with a towel.
