Feel like looking at some stars? You've come to the right place. From here in you can see a tiny fraction of the 400 billion or so stars found in the Milky Way Galaxy. Located at the highest point in the Astronomy Tower is a circular spacious deck that it just three flights of spiraling stairs above the Astronomy classroom. Here, students are encouraged to use it the large telescope located along its edge or any of the smaller telescopes accenting the perimeter of the deck. In the cupboards around the space you can also find and borrow a variety of handheld astronomical instruments from astrolabes to nocturnals to sextants.
Large star charts are magic'd to the walls which anyone is free to study for own leisure or school assignment. Be advised that any attempt to takedown these charts is discouraged unless you fancy yourself a tail and enjoy barking when you attempt to speak.
Stargazing is an activity best practiced at night and therefore the observatory always open to students and their academic pursuits at all hours of the day - as long as students adhere by a curfew and have permission from a member of faculty showing that you are allowed to be here after curfew. If caught after hours without a signed note you can expect that there will be consequences.

The crisp autumn air could be felt throughout Hogwarts, but nowhere more so than the top of the observatory. Wrapped up in a warm forest green woollen jumper speckled with multicoloured dots, baggy jeans that contained several not so artful rips and a pair of worn, brown boots, it was clear that Gus had come somewhat prepared for the cold weather. With daylight hours shrinking at a rate that seemed almost magical in itself, stargazing before curfew had become just about possible, if timed correctly. Unfortunately for Gus, his tour of the Hogwarts grounds had taken just a smidge too long, mostly due to his enthusiasm for all things nature related. Luckily for Asena, he’d saved the best for last. To some, the observatory was a place to hide, others a place to make out, but to this fifth-year, it was a place of wonder. A place where magic happens at such an astronomical level that it was almost unfathomable. A place where the most impressive fizzes, sparks and bangs, usually associated with wand work, have to bow down to the overwhelming unknown vastness of the night sky.
“…and so really, when you look up at the stars, you’re actually looking back in time because space is so vast, it literally takes yeeeeears for the light to travel to our eyes,” he continued to say as they reached the top. Ascending the final few steps to the top of the observatory, Gus couldn’t help but grin to himself as the room came into view along with the night-sky. Having already checked to see what the weather was going to be like for the night, he already knew that the few remaining clouds that were blocking the night sky would clear, allowing him to point out not only his favourite parts of the Hogwarts grounds that could be seen from here, but also his favourite constellations.
“Ta-da!”, he exclaimed enthusiastically as he gestured to the observatory, a place he most likely knew that she’d seen by now. “No tour of the Hogwarts grounds could be completed without being able to view them from above.” In truth, coming here had been more of an excuse to look up at the stars rather than the view of the grounds at night, but that was neither here nor there. “This is my favourite place in the whole castle”, he said quietly, more to himself than Asena. Sure, they’d been to some pretty cool places, like the edge of the Forbidden Forest, the Black Lake, Quidditch Pitch and near the Whomping Willow and everywhere in between, but this was the best place of all.
“So what do you think?” he asked, turning towards Asena with a bright and enthusiastic face.

Unlike Gus, Asena hadn't come as prepared for the cold. Back home, it didn't get cold until December and she hadn't yet unpacked her winter wardrobe here as a result. Of course, she knew Scotland wouldn't be as forgiving in the colder months, but there was a small part of her that hoped the weather wouldn't turn so long as she didn't take her parka out of her trunk. So while he was busy enthusiastically explaining the concept of light travel as if she had never opened a science textbook in her life, She was focusing all her energy on keeping warm. Groundbreaking stuff, Gus. Did he think she was stupid? She had attended one of the most elite magical academies in the Mediterranean, she certainly didn't need a boy in distressed denim mansplaining the speed of light to her, tyvm.
But her annoyance was quickly eclipsed by a much more pressing issue the moment he announced his grand 'ta-da!' and they stepped fully into the open air.
Her stomach performed a violent, totally unwelcome drop. They were high up. Really high up. Way too high up. The railing looked entirely too low to be up to any sort of acceptable safety code, and the sweeping, dark expanse of the Hogwarts grounds plummeting away below them triggered a sharp spiking sensation in her chest. Absolutely not. She took a small step back, though careful not to show her distress otherwise. There was no way she was going to let the golden retriever of a boy next to her know that she was on the brink of an internal panic.
She wrapped her shawl around her shoulders tightly, lifting her chin slightly. "I think it is freezing," she answered honestly, careful not to look down beyond the railing. "And I assure you, Gus, they teach basic astronomy in Türkiye as well. I am aware of how light travels." She did, however, chance a look up at the sky, which was far less horrifying than looking down. "But the sky is beautiful tonight," the clarity, how many stars one could see, she could appreciate that. Tbh, probably because they were literally in the middle of absolute no where Scotland, but that was neither here nor there.
