The first floor was... certainly busier in a different way than Professor Schirmer's own usual haunt of the third level. Less injured children she supposed, and more Dash. She wondered if the professors of the first floor were more social as a result and made up her mind to befriend the healer. Third floor solidarity.

The classroom she'd chosen for the defense lesson had been one of her favourites as a student, and the tall blonde woman was a little bit dismayed to see how dusty and unused it was. Really, Hogwarts was it so hard to keep yourself clean? Even with elves that were off doing goodness knew what? A few quick charms and minutes later the room was sparkling.

Literally.

Unlike most of the Defense rooms, this one featured bright windows that allowed the light to stream in, diffused with colours and generally giving the room a bright and happy feel. The view looked out over the lake. There were no desks or chairs in the room and even the professor took a seat on the ground, waiting there with her feet tucked up comfortably beneath her for the students to arrive. She had a stack of books next to her and looked serene, if a bit distant.

When it was time, she charmed the doors to open, and greeted the students as they begin to file in.

What do you know, or think you know, about the Patronus Charm?

Discuss amongst yourselves some famous witches and wizards and their known Patronus forms. Given what we know about them; their achievements, their experiences, what do you think their Patronus form indicates about their personalities?

For those of you who can cast a Corporeal Patronus and know what form it takes, see if you can match up how it fits your personality. Younger students, you can work with students who do have a known Spirit Guardian, or you can look up mine, which is a Dove, or Headmaster Tate's which is a Mountain Goat, or that of another adult you know, even some of the historical figures we were discussing.

"I want you to think of your happiest memory. Something strong enough that you can focus on it easily, maybe something that makes you smile. It doesn't have to be relating to love. If you have more than one, lucky you! You can experiment to see which is best. You don't have to share it if you don't want to, but feel free to put your hand up and share if you do.

Levitation party activity! Click here for instructions. Read the post carefully and please take note of your classmates posts following this one too. Worth ten points!

edit: Activity still running, only please focus on the third part, AKA testing out your happy memory with a levitation potion.

The party is still going, you can help yourself to food or drink while we wait for a guest fetched via a patronus message. In the meantime the professor wants to know who can cast a patronus already and whether its corporeal or non-corporeal.

PLEASE be realistic with your character's abilities. The patronus charm is ADVANCED magic and little firsties should NOT be able to manage it. For the purposes of this class please pay attention to the following:

6th & 7th years: May be able to cast a corporeal or non-corporeal patronus, depending on character's skill level and experience. May learn how to do one or the other during the lesson.

5th years: May be able to cast non-corporeal patronus, depending on character's skill level and experience, very FEW and RARELY may a 5th year manage a corporeal patronus. May learn how to do one or the other during the lesson.

4th years: Depending on character's skill level and experience, very FEW and RARELY may a 4th year manage a non-corporeal patronus. May learn a non-corporeal patronus during the lesson.

3rd years: Depending on character's skill level and experience, may learn a non-corporeal patronus during the lesson. But its okay for them NOT to learn how yet too.

1st & 2nd years: Depending on character's skill level and experience, may learn an UNSTABLE non-corporeal patronus during the lesson. This means they might manage a slight whisp, but otherwise should NOT be able to cast a patronus. Its okay for them NOT to learn how yet too.

When we get to the spell casting aspect of the lesson, please note that anyone not being realistic may have their post edited or deleted, which I don't WANT to do but we're not all Harry Potter! For reference, Althea learned hers in 6th year non-corporeally, and managed a corporeal patronus in 7th year. Remember, just because your character might not be able to do it yet, it doesn't mean they never will!

~~As you saw, Professor Scabior came because I sent him a Patronus message. What do you think are the benefits of communicating via Patronus?~~

"Alright are you all ready to give it a go? Stand up if you are and make sure you give each other a bit of space. Wands out. The incantation is Expecto Patronum. Ecks-PEK-toh pa-TRO-num. You simply need to point your wand and focus really hard on that strong happy memory. Practice the incantation a few times to get the hang of it and then you may start. Those of you who can already manage it, please do encourage the younger ones and let them see how you do it. I have an activity for you too, that we'll start in a little while!"

Please note, I'm waiting to get an all clear regarding the recent Malware threat on SS before continuing, not because of any risk, rather because several people may be staying away right now and I'd rather be sure nobody is left at a disadvantage because they don't feel safe accessing the site. Expect that the lesson will continue on sunday. Everything is all clear

After Kennedy saw Kurumi help the elf, he decided to concentrate on decorating the room. Taking two green balloons and two blue ones, he blew air into the first one.

What?

Those were his favorite colors, it's not like he was biased or anything. Soon, he had four inflated balloons at his feet. Picking one up he charmed it with the sticking charm. "Wingardium Leviosa," he said, levitating the green balloon up into the air and sticking it on the wall. He repeated the same process three more times.

Keefer had been daydreaming, thinking of happy memories. He was woken from his reverie when a green balloon floated in front of his face. He jolted back to reality and noticed Kennedy decorating. "Hey, want some help?" he asked, grabbing a balloon and beginning to blow it up.

The Muggle way of blowing up balloons was so satisfying. Plus, he wasn't exactly sure what spell would inflate the balloon. He began a small pile of green and blue balloons next to him, just waiting to be levitated or fixed to the ceiling.

Party?

That was certainly a turn of events. Defense wasn't usually the class to expect that from but it wasn't an unwelcome surprise. And the professor's explaination of the testing of the potion made sense in a more happy, expressive, exciting environment of a party. Seeing his fellow students start up on things, especially Kurumi who with her house elf friend was pretty well into it, Gideon figured he might as well join in.

First task...decorate with what was in the first box.

Approaching said box, the fourth year looked around what was within and now anything half out that his fellow students had already been through. The record collection was certainly a plus though he almost left it and the gramaphone where it was but then wondered why it hadn't been taken care of before now despite having seen others handling the records. Guess he could do it, having been a fan of music.

Taking the gramaphone out of the box, he set it on a nearby table that was already set up so it was stable before picking out a random record and placing it on the turnable. Knowing how it worked since his grand-uncle had shown him how on a visit, Gideon set the needle to work and the music began as the Gryffindor returned to the box for othere ideas.

The second thing I'd like for you to do is work together to set up everything we need for party food, get those trestle tables set up, and ready to go.

After we have the room party-ready, comes part three! See these little bottles at my feet? We're going to test out our happy memories, see how strong they are. The bottles contain a levitation potion, activated by happy thoughts. If you take a little sip and think hard about your chosen happy memory, and its strong enough, you'll float up into the air. The strongest memories will allow you to float up to the ceiling." And she was sure those of them who were potions savvy would realise that one of the ingredients was Billywig stings, as well as the use of a cheering charm in its brewing. Giddiness and happiness would be a bit of a lingering after effect.

"To get down to the floor again, you just burp. I'll mind your manners just this once!"

And of course one other thing.

"An elf will be along shortly with party food. Plenty of chocolate and plenty of soft drink for those of you that need happy fuel and burping fuel." She smiled around at the students. "And if you're floating around enough, you might just work up a hunger anyway, do feel free to help yourselves when the food arrives." Especially because Professor Schirmer wasn't usually one to allow food in her classes.

"If you don't levitate at all, try a different memory, or focusing harder. This is your chance to experiment and see what works for you." Althea advised. "Alright, lets get everything set up, shall we?"

OOC: Activity time! For this portion of the class, you'll be marked out of TEN POINTS for participating and following instructions. You'll need to make at least five posts, the first two need to be as instructed, getting the party set up: one decorating the room somehow (by hand is fine for students that don't know useful spells) and one helping to set up the trestle tables and the things that should be on it. Please work together! Take note of what others post and build on it. Interact and have fun!

The remainder of your posts should be taking the levitation potion and experimenting with it and your character's happy memories. I'll resume the class again as soon as I'm able, it will likely continue past this activity in 24-48 hours so you have plenty of time to join in. It'd be helpful if you title your posts.

Be creative and have fun, and remember Althea is still right here watching and she won't let anyone get hurt.... and there still aren't any chairs

About the levitation potion:
Aside from what is written in the description above, please note that your character's maximum altitude is approximately their natural height, though Althea said up to the ceiling, most children won't get that high unless you know they can cast a Patronus already.

You can have your charrie move around a bit, but no silly business such as flying out windows or anything of that nature.

Moving while levitating is slow, think astronauts in a spaceship in outer space.

Your character can levitate just an inch off the ground if you decide their memory isn't happy enough, or just feel lighter even if they aren't levitating at all. Feel free to experiment with the height/memory relationship as you judge whether or not the memory will be happy enough for a patronus.

Side effects include mild giddiness and lingering happiness, so feel free to include that if you wish.

Levitation party! Ok, count her in! She took her wand out of her pocket.

"Wingardium Leviosa," she said and streamers levitated out of the first box. Katrina then took it out and went to stick it on the wall with a sticking charm.

Pam leaned against the wall, and looked down in her hands. In one hand she had the bubbly soda that was keeping her down. In the other, she had the vial with enough potion for one more try. She thought long and hard, and came up with the perfect memory. Nate.

She closed her eyes, and thought about her recent boyfriend. Her only boyfriend. Her best friend for nine years. The one she couldn't live without. She remembered how she felt when they got together. And then how she got her first kiss. Not neccessarily in that order. She remembered how the snow didn't numb her body, but actually cooled it down. How warm she felt when she was around Nate.

She opened one eye, and saw Nate, just coming down from his last 'flight'. She closed her eye again, and let the memory fill her before gulping the last of the vial. She started laughing as she floated. When she opened her eyes again, she was about four feet off the ground.

She took a sip of her bubbly soda, before laughing again. But what came out was a mix of burping and laughing. She made this noise until she hit the ground again. She looked up at the professor, happier than ever.

After several minutes, Keefer had a large pile of green and blue balloons next to him. He glanced around. Most students were attaching things to the ceiling and walls. Well that's boring! he thought. He unholstered his wand and pointed it at the very topmost balloon.

"Wingardium leviosa," he said excitedly. He watched as the lone green orb ascended. When it was about seven feet off the ground, he concentrated on letting the balloon float there. In this same manner, he filled the room with floating blobs of color just above head-level.

There! It's perfect! Now it's time to grab some grub!

Partyyy! Yes! Her favorite thing! Angelina was so excited and happy, she skipped over to the first box, with the balloons. She took a few and started to blow them up. Since she was in chior before Hogwarts she had big lugs. In five minutes she had four balloons complete. She then decided to move on. She grabbed some streamers and decorated the classroom in them. After she went to look as some of the music that was picked out. She smiled when she saw what there was and then decided to move on to the next part.

Erin set up the trestle tables and put decorations in it. She started hanging the steamers and the balloons that were piled, she looked for a nice spot to set it up. Most of the students were done setting up but still she enjoyed the decorating part of the activity.

Looking for other boxes, Erin still continued on decorating and making the spot looked like a party place.

Folding the last napkin and lying it on the empty plate Louisa eyed the tables and smiled at everyone's efforts in making the previously-blank room into a party-able one. There was still a thing or two to do but her classmates were all over it so she went to the third box, her heart beating a bit faster from the anticipation, and grabbed a vial.

The liquid was pale blue, the beautiful color she'd always admired. She went to stand in a remote corner where she could float freely because, y'know, her memories were so happy and awesome and great and everything good.

YEP she was in a very ~~rare~~ fantastic mood.

Louisa opened the vial carefully, brought it close to her mouth and closed her eyes. The first memory to fly with was the one that kept coming back to her sometimes in dreams - the day she considered Dallin her friend, best friend. The day he rushed to her aid after she'd fallen off the tree. His face turning pale for her, his eyebrows frowning only to make sure she was intact. That same day that her whole family left her in school to go to France. Without goodbye.

Siiiiip.

Her eyes were still closed as she felt her body's weight lessened on her knees but her feet never left the floor.

"Wow, your decorations are looking really nice!" he said kindly, smiling at the girl.

Katrina levitated balloons everywhere, tying them to corners and using the sticking charm.

Finally, her last balloon.
"Wingardium Leviosa," and the balloon floated up. She stuck it on the ceiling with the Sticking Charm. She was done!

Angelina moved to the second box and took out the paper plates and cups and placed them all over to table. Around have of the table was done, so she left a lot for others who would get to this part, and so they would have something to do.

After blowing up a few balloons --- okay, ONE balloon --- Tori bounced over to the box that held paper decorations and started yanking them out of the box willy nilly. She giggled as she got crepe paper ALL OVER her and the floor and some on the walls. The redhead even tossed a few rolls up and over the arching framework of the room.

Then she scooped up handfuls of confetti that happened to be lying in the bottom of the box and skipped over to the tables, inhaling the scent of the yummy elf-made food as she sprinkled confetti all around the various dishes.

Wheeeeeee what fun this was! Maybe VicTORIa would grow up to be a party planner one day!

WHY didn't she float? Or fly? Or even jump? Louisa frowned down at the vial and shook it. Okay, maybe now it'd work. Right? Right.

She closed her eyes again and this time her mind conjured her latest happy - no, fantastical moment when Joao's lips touched hers in eight of January, her fifteenth birthday. Louisa's first kiss had been planned and fantasized with another boy for so long, even in her diary she never wrote or thought about it to be with Joao, the sophisticated boy from Brazil. Yet destiny brought him this year to Hogwarts to let her move on and enjoy the feeling.

Yes, it was definitely happier than the tire-swinging one with Dallin.

This time Louisa's feet did leave the floor but only for a second or two before landing with an inaudible thud. She pouted and wanted to throw the vial from the closest window. "This potion insults my happy memories!" Calling out randomly.

Thank Merlin Louisa had stubbornness of a cat because she was to try this until it worked. HMPH.

After decorating, time to party! She danced to the music the 4th years put up and danced. But she always got some decorations ready. This was the best DADA lesson!

After she finishes hanging the balloon and placing paper cups and plates on the tables, Aiden approaches the other box to retrieve a vial of the potion. She takes a few drops of it while thinking about a happy memory which is when she got her first broom.

Nothing happens. That's strange... Wasn't that happy enough?

Why else would it be in the box right?" he answered, taking his finished record back while his fellow fourth year set the next one up.

That settled, the Gryffindor boy set up hanging and setting up various cut-outs and such on any areas his fellow students hadn't already handled and covered with streamers and what not. The music of Kurumi's choice now filtering through the room that now looked quite festive with all the attention it had been given.

Now what was that next task?

After decorating Angelina headed over to the thrid box to take the potion. She thought of her happy memory and too a sip of the potion. Like Professor said, it was rase you off the ground. But for Angelina it only lifted her about an intch to two intches off the ground.

She replied. She was going to be polite and say the girl's name, but she couldn't remember it for the life of her. Ellie was never good with those Hufflepuffs.

Anyways, on with decorations. Ellie continued blowing up and tossing streamers.

With her newly obtained balloons, Ellie turned to go decorate more, when she felt someone bump into her shoulder. "Sorry!" She said in unison with the girl who she just realized was... Louisa Carter. Ellie stared at her for a second before looking away. Not that she wanted to take the apology back, it was just awkward.

Thankfully, Louisa said something. But it seemed rather silly. "Oh." What spell? "My lungs...?" She said with a little laugh. Was there a spell for blowing up balloons? That might have made things easier. WAIT... was she joking around with Louisa? That was... unheard of. O__o

Josephine started decorating, tying up the streamers and levitating some balloons up to the ceiling, shw as having fun in this class.

Filled with tasty treats, Keefer sauntered over to pick of his small vial of potion. He grabbed one and held it up as if to inspect it. I wonder if it tastes good?

Seeing a clearing in the room, he walked briskly to it and closed his eyes. He wracked his brain, trying to decide which memory to use. In his mind's eye, he saw first the moment he had been Sorted into his favorite House. Nah, I can't remember that very clearly. It's just noise from cheering. He discarded this option.

After a few more rejections, he decided to dwell on the moment he had gotten his acceptance letter to Hogwarts. He could clearly picture the look on his mum and dad's faces, the feeling of bubbly giddiness welling up inside him as his dream became a reality. He remembered his joy at knowing he was going to Hogwarts, where he could finally be with kids his own age and learn to hone his skills.

After allowing this thought to fill him, he unstoppered the vial. Lifting it to his lips, he ingested a few drops. A light feeling came upon him. Gazing at the ground, he suddenly realized that his feet were no longer in contact with the floor. He was only a few inches off the ground, but it was still cool. He was used to it of course, but only with the aid of a broom.

...huh? Louisa didn't get the word Ellie replied with at first, mostly because it was funny. And there wasn't 'funny' in their book before. Once she got it though, the younger girl laughed out loud, too enthusiastically even. ELLIE JOHANSON JOKED. This was definitely going to earn her more points with Dallin. Right? Right.

"I thought you knew a spell for it." She shrugged, keeping a decent smile on, "Blowing balloons hurt my tonsils." And it was impressing that Ellie blew more than two balloons that fast. No kidding.

Louisa kept her eyes on the happy girl as she thought about a happy memory. It should work now, right? Seeing a happy person could help. The images in her mind shuffled around before a very long memory was focused on. Jason, her stepfather, had brought her a hamster. They'd agreed to keep one and learn how to take care of it as a practice to her new brother's arrival. They named the cute little creature together, picked his 'house', his kind of food and they even made a little cap for him!

It wasn't the memory in itself that triggered the invisible happy glow around the fourth year rather than the feeling of fatherly love all over again. Before magic. Before Hogwarts. Before Isaac Carter.

Siiiiip.

When she opened her eyes, Louisa saw that Ellie's head, which was at the same level with her own, was at least a foot lower. She looked down and saw her feet hovering above the ground, she wouldn't call this flying but it definitely was floating! "Ellie! Look! It worked! I did it!" Louisa squeaked spontaneously.

After Tori finished all her decorating, she decided to clean up the empty boxes. The redheaded girl cheerfully stacked them all in one corner of the room and then dusted off her hands.

She grabbed a little bottle of potion and decided it would be best to take it on an empty stomach, so that if she turned upside down in the air she wouldn't get sick and barf on her peers... though that would be pretty funny. Hehee.

Uncorking the little phial, Tori eyed it closely before downing the entire thing in one gulp. She shuddered a little and then started giggling more loudly. Hehehee. They had WON at QUIDDITCH. She floated up a few inches and ooooohed at the sight of her toes dangling off the ground. Not only had they won at Quidditch, they had won TWICE at Quidditch ANNNND Perfect Prefect Treyen Lockhart had KISSED HER.

Tori floated an entire foot up in the air with that happy thought. She stretched her hands out behind her head and grinned. Come to think of it, she was getting a lottttttt of kisses lately.... Paulie, Treyen, well... just those two, but still....

With each happy thought, the girl gently floated higher and higher, bit by bit...

Selina peaked inside the second box and saw an array of utensils and items for the actual party feast-thing. With one big scoop she picked up party hats, utensils, etc. While she was in the midst getting together what she was going to lay out she heard this awful noise come from the gramaphone. She looked over to the culprit of the bad music choice and saw that Kurumi was behind it. At least when other students were in charge of the music they put on some good choices. Under Kurumi's choice she felt like she should be an old black and white Disney cartoon slowly walking through the fields of some random farm. Nice and slow.

She shook her head of the thought and pressed forward laying out all of the plates, utensils and hats. Once she was done she walked over to the third box and picked up a vial of the potion she was going to be taking. Now her thought...
