The first floor was... certainly busier in a different way than Professor Schirmer's own usual haunt of the third level. Less injured children she supposed, and more Dash. She wondered if the professors of the first floor were more social as a result and made up her mind to befriend the healer. Third floor solidarity.
The classroom she'd chosen for the defense lesson had been one of her favourites as a student, and the tall blonde woman was a little bit dismayed to see how dusty and unused it was. Really, Hogwarts was it so hard to keep yourself clean? Even with elves that were off doing goodness knew what? A few quick charms and minutes later the room was sparkling.
Literally.
Unlike most of the Defense rooms, this one featured bright windows that allowed the light to stream in, diffused with colours and generally giving the room a bright and happy feel. The view looked out over the lake. There were no desks or chairs in the room and even the professor took a seat on the ground, waiting there with her feet tucked up comfortably beneath her for the students to arrive. She had a stack of books next to her and looked serene, if a bit distant.
When it was time, she charmed the doors to open, and greeted the students as they begin to file in.
ooc: the lesson will begin approximately 7.5 hours from the time of this post I'm simply opening it now so you can post arriving if you want to. The lesson has begun! Please act as if you were here all along if you haven't yet posted, latecomers will likely lose points. Please remember to follow Professor Schirmer's rules which can be found here.
SPOILER!!: the room looks something like this

In addition the room is now decorated for a party. Balloons and streamers are everywhere, there are tables set up with food and drink, and music playing to add to the festive feel.
Questions: What do you know, or think you know, about the Patronus Charm?
Discuss amongst yourselves some famous witches and wizards and their known Patronus forms. Given what we know about them; their achievements, their experiences, what do you think their Patronus form indicates about their personalities?
For those of you who can cast a Corporeal Patronus and know what form it takes, see if you can match up how it fits your personality. Younger students, you can work with students who do have a known Spirit Guardian, or you can look up mine, which is a Dove, or Headmaster Tate's which is a Mountain Goat, or that of another adult you know, even some of the historical figures we were discussing.
"I want you to think of your happiest memory. Something strong enough that you can focus on it easily, maybe something that makes you smile. It doesn't have to be relating to love. If you have more than one, lucky you! You can experiment to see which is best. You don't have to share it if you don't want to, but feel free to put your hand up and share if you do.

Levitation party activity! Click here for instructions. Read the post carefully and please take note of your classmates posts following this one too. Worth ten points!
edit: Activity still running, only please focus on the third part, AKA testing out your happy memory with a levitation potion.
The party is still going, you can help yourself to food or drink while we wait for a guest fetched via a patronus message. In the meantime the professor wants to know who can cast a patronus already and whether its corporeal or non-corporeal.
PLEASE be realistic with your character's abilities. The patronus charm is ADVANCED magic and little firsties should NOT be able to manage it. For the purposes of this class please pay attention to the following:
6th & 7th years: May be able to cast a corporeal or non-corporeal patronus, depending on character's skill level and experience. May learn how to do one or the other during the lesson.
5th years: May be able to cast non-corporeal patronus, depending on character's skill level and experience, very FEW and RARELY may a 5th year manage a corporeal patronus. May learn how to do one or the other during the lesson.
4th years: Depending on character's skill level and experience, very FEW and RARELY may a 4th year manage a non-corporeal patronus. May learn a non-corporeal patronus during the lesson.
3rd years: Depending on character's skill level and experience, may learn a non-corporeal patronus during the lesson. But its okay for them NOT to learn how yet too.
1st & 2nd years: Depending on character's skill level and experience, may learn an UNSTABLE non-corporeal patronus during the lesson. This means they might manage a slight whisp, but otherwise should NOT be able to cast a patronus. Its okay for them NOT to learn how yet too.
When we get to the spell casting aspect of the lesson, please note that anyone not being realistic may have their post edited or deleted, which I don't WANT to do but we're not all Harry Potter! For reference, Althea learned hers in 6th year non-corporeally, and managed a corporeal patronus in 7th year. Remember, just because your character might not be able to do it yet, it doesn't mean they never will!
As you saw, Professor Scabior came because I sent him a Patronus message. What do you think are the benefits of communicating via Patronus?
"Alright are you all ready to give it a go? Stand up if you are and make sure you give each other a bit of space. Wands out. The incantation is Expecto Patronum. Ecks-PEK-toh pa-TRO-num. You simply need to point your wand and focus really hard on that strong happy memory. Practice the incantation a few times to get the hang of it and then you may start. Those of you who can already manage it, please do encourage the younger ones and let them see how you do it. I have an activity for you too, that we'll start in a little while!"
Please note, I'm waiting to get an all clear regarding the recent Malware threat on SS before continuing, not because of any risk, rather because several people may be staying away right now and I'd rather be sure nobody is left at a disadvantage because they don't feel safe accessing the site. Expect that the lesson will continue on sunday. Everything is all clear Sorry for any trouble.

It was over?
Looking up from the book about all the different patronuses and their meanings, Evelyn blinked and glanced around to see everyone finally on their feet again. Good Merlin, that had got to be one of the more embarassing activities a teacher has had them do. She'd rather put on that clown costume in transfiguration then do this.
Closing the book, she was quite interested in learning how to send messages with a patronus, though the way the Professor performed it, she just...still wasn't quite sure how it was done. Watching the dove fly out of the room, the Slytherin leaned back a little on her hands, listening to everyone else say if they could cast a non-corporeal or corporeal patronus. Hmmm... OHLOOK! "Hello Professor Scabior." Mr. History teacher was in their class. Hehe...
...Right. Question. Gotta answer it. "I've been able to cast a corporeal." she said, after raising her hand. Hence how she knew what hers was.

In the process of floating gleefully, Arya had managed to summon up a soda and start downing the beverage. She stayed airborne, however, until the professor spoke for them to take a seat, in which she proceed to burp her way to the ground. As soon as she was grounded, she went for the food and pumpkin juice, piling it all on her plate before heading over and taking the same seat she'd had before.
Arya had other things with her now, so maybe the view wouldn't be so distracting? "I can cast corporeal patronus." After heating a colorful marshmallow with her wand and squishing it between two chocolate chip cookies, she raised her hand. Priorities. The History of Magic Professor got the briefest of smiles before her attention was split between her cookie sandwich and Profesor Schirmer.

she looking up as the teacher walked in, she knew she would never be able to do that, but it was going to be good to learn from the older students, maybe one day i could do it
Minerva grabbed her food and headed to a seat next to William. She listened to his questions and wondered the same thing. Being a first year she knew she would never be able to do this, but was excited to see some of the older students do it. She really enjoyed seeing the dove fly around the room.
William is happy that Minerva is sitting next to him. He wonders if she could do the spell.
After burping as quietly as he could and softly landing on the ground, Kennedy went to grab some cookies and then took his old spot on the ground. He watched in awe as the professor's dove flew around the room and out. He wondered if you could feel a patronus, like pet it or something.
He bit his cookie and chewed it while he thought about casting his own patronus. He's never done it, actually, he didn't know what it was until he read about them at the library a few months ago. This made him feel hopeless. What if it took years and years to learn how to do it?
Well, might as well get started on creating happy memories then.

"We know that you need a strong happy memory to cast a patronus, and we know that it can be used as protection against Dementors and Lethifolds. Earlier it was mentioned that a Patronus can be used as a means of communication too. So I'll demonstrate right now.... by seeing if I can invite someone else to our little party." Good Merlin she couldn't believe she was doing this. Althea mentally face palmed before withdrawing her wand and focusing on a strong happy memory, and on the message she wanted to send.
She cast her patronus, a silvery dove, which flew around the room gracefully a few times, looping around the students and then disappeared in a rush out a window.
"Hopefully our guest will be here soon, in the meantime which of you are able to cast a corporeal or non-corporeal patronus? Please raise your hand and indicate which you can do, no spell-casting yet though please."

Having tired of floating around with the balloons, Stella had quietly burped to start lowering herself several minutes before Professor Schirmer had called for everyone's attention. Landing had become even easier as the professor had reprimanded a couple of firsties for leaving the lesson, as it had helped wash her happy memory from her mind and she'd touched ground with a bit louder of a sound than she'd hoped. It hadn't seemed to gain attention, though, for which she was grateful, and she'd headed over to help herself to some party snacks as the professor had gone into explaining more about Patronuses and the class discussion. She could listen and eat, or at least it seemed like she'd had permission to do so. She'd turned to fully pay attention as the dove had flown around the room, however. The communication aspect had always intrigued her.
Heading to her seat, she'd barely sat down as Professor Scabior had entered, and took a sip of pumpkin juice before speaking at all. "Hello, Professor Scabior," she'd said, returning his bland greeting to them all with a smile before turning back to Professor Schirmer as they'd been asked about their own proficiency. Setting her glass down on the floor by her feet carefully, she raised her hand. "I can cast a non-corporeal Patronus. My sister's been working with me on the charm the last couple of summers, and I've managed a corporeal Patronus once or twice, but it's not really consistent yet," she replied. It was enough that she knew what creature hers was, but it didn't last very long most of the times she'd managed to conjure it.

Try to cast a patronus? Since she was a first year student, maybe she couldn't produce it. But, maybe we need a try??
"Expecto Patronum!!" said her. Nothing happened.
"Expecto Patronum!!" nothing happened again..

Selina looked around the room at all of the first, second, third and fourth years who were trying to cast a patronus. The spell was just too difficult for people their age to do successfully and, yet, there were first years who were getting emotional over their failure. Why? They were not old enough to handle this type of magic yet. Not everyone was a Harry Potter and he had some weird magic going on inside of him so did he really count? She supposed not.
But no, she could not cast a patronus and so she kept her hand down. As for the other students who were attempting to cast it she was confused. Why were they doing that? The Professor told them to not start yet. But she would stay out of it.
"Hopefully our guest will be here soon, in the meantime which of you are able to cast a corporeal or non-corporeal patronus? Please raise your hand and indicate which you can do, no spell-casting yet though please."
Louisa raised her hand, "I tried casting it once, professor, but didn't manage to. Not in the bit." Yep, she was honest like this. The girl was a third year when she tried so.. all's good. Now, however, should be a great opportunity to try again! With that memory that allowed her to float around a little bit.
And soon the visitor walked in..

"Hi professor." She smiled at him, awed at how fast the dove delivered the message and that it was actually real! Better than cell phones even! Louisa was definitely going to use this with her friends... when she managed to do one that is.
Jesifur knew being a first year she would not be able to cast a patronus but really wanted to have the chance to try it. She was able to hover pretty high during the first part of the class. Maybe she would be able to produce some wisps of patronus smoke...

Jonathan raised his hand "I've been able to cast a non-corporeal patronus, professor." well by his age, he could at least perform a non-corporeal one. Jonathan really felt happy when he first cast the patronus spell. Although, he did try to cast a Corporeal patronus but so far, he wasn't be able to produce it yet. He needs to concentrate more and practice well.
Then the professor did say they will be having a guest arriving. Who could it be? then after awhile, Professor Scarbior entered the room. "hello professor".

Kurumi shook her head. She had never even attempted to produce one before and highly doubted that she would be able to. Jonathan did catch her attention when he said that he had been able to before. She...didn't know he could do that. He was always saying how he was terrible at studying and that he wasn't good at this and that, but being able to produce a patronus was no small thing. She smiled in his direction when....
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEK!
WHY DID PROFESSOR SCARY FACE HAVE TO ENTER THE ROOM?!
Any hope that the fourth year had of producing so much as a puff of smoke out of the tip of her wand was lost thanks to him showing up. Kurumi felt like sinking into the floor and hiding there. "Good day, Professor," she said, offering the man a small nod of the head.
And then...there were two students who were casting the spell already...and one of them in Gryffindor. Merlin help her. "Psst," she said, softly whispering to the Slytherin and Gryffindor who were casting spells. "We are not casting the spell yet!"

Violet started when Professor Scabior came in--so that was who Professor Schirmer had sent her patronus to! That was a neat trick! You could send a message and the people around you wouldn't even know who you had sent it to. Hmm...Professor Scabior looked less than thrilled to be visiting them.

"Good morning, Professor Scabior", Alyssa greeted the Professor. She was surprised when Professor Scabior showed up in their class. "I guess that was whom Professor Schirmer had sent her Patronus to. I wish that I could do that", Alyssa thought to herself. She didn't answer when the Professor asked who could cast a patronus, although she had some success with the levitation portion of the class lesson, she knew that her chances of creating a corporeal patronus was very unlikely. As for a non-corporeal one, she doubted that she was experienced enough to even produce one of that, but she was willing to give it a try. So she decided that when the Professor asked for volunteers, she would raise her hand.
Scabior didn't pretend that he understood the Charms Professor at all. He had swooped into her first class and she had been extremely uptight and basically kicked him out....and yet now she was calling him over to the DADA lesson she was teaching.
He opened the door to the classroom and stepped inside, surprised to see that there were no desks at all in Althea's set up. "You rang?" The man asked dully. "Hello class." Scabior added.
Erin listened intently towards Professor Schirmer. She didn't want any points reduction again. The Professor casted her corporeal Patronus. Awesome! It was Erin's first time to witness something beyond magic like that. Just unbelievable. Then she asked something about corporeal and non-corporeal Patronus. Definitely, Erin couldn't do any of it, doubting that she would learn it here in Hogwarts.
Professor Scabior was here? Was he the guest they were waiting for? Paying her respect, she spoke bowing slightly, "Good day, Professor Scabior."
Josephine took her wand and flicked it "Expecto Patronum!"
Nothing happened.
"Expecto Patronum! Expecto Patronum!" she kept flicking it and nothing came out. She decided to think about something happier, okay, something happier.
The first time she sang in public, that was happy.
"Expecto Patronum!" she yelled, a silver-ish flicker came out of it.NOTHING HAPPENED She smiled and jumped around.
"EXPECTO PATRONUM!" she yelled again, a stonger silver whisp came out,NOTHING HAPPENED she felt a little tired, so she stopped trying.

Kennedy's attention was briefly distracted by the presence of Professor Scabior, but then he was distracted again by a girl casting the charm. "Hey," he whispered to her. "We're not supposed to do that yet," he said. Yeah, that's what the professor had said.

Keefer had always had a propensity for Charms. And well, this was a charm, after all. He had read about Patronuses in the library and decided to try it himself in the practice area. He remembered struggling with it for an hour, managing to produce only wisps of vapor. The second time he had gone to practice, he had managed something solid-looking on the first go. His imagination had seen an okapi, but he really couldn't tell. Okapis were his favorite animal, so he was probably just projecting that hope onto what he saw.

Keefer was abruptly brought back to the present when someone behind him starting yelling the incantation. He turned around. "We aren't supposed to try the spell yet," he said kindly. Noticing the Gryffindor crest on her robes, he was glad that the girl wasn't in his House. He was pretty sure the Professor would deduct points for the blatant misbehavior.
Keefer realized that several students had probably already shared answers. He raised his hand. "Professor, I have managed a good amount of vapor before. Once it sort of solidified into a specific shape, but I don't really know what that was."

Oh the handsome History of Magic Professor is in, Kimalia rested her head again on her open right palm relaxing. "Hi Professor," she greeted politely before turning back to the attention of students who were already trying out patronuses.
She could feel their excitement, but Kimalia can't recall hearing that it was okay to start practicing the spell already.. Oh well, meanwhile Kimalia decided to continue writing some happy thoughts to try out seeing as she had never performed or even attempted a patronus, corporeal or non-corporeal.

OH! Raising her hand Lexi said, "I can cast a corporeal Patronus, professor. It takes the shape of a lynx... and I worked on it for a long time before I got it right." She actually blushed slightly and put her hand down.
Hearing the other adult voice she looked up and spotted Professor Scabies... or whatever his name was. Ugh. She could NOT remember it. He looked like he had chewed on something sour all the time and he looked as though he needed a HUG. Lexi found herself moving closer to the door and the man... scooting across the floor on her bum. Maybe she would offer him a hug.
Josephine took her wand and flicked it "Expecto Patronum!"
Nothing happened.
"Expecto Patronum! Expecto Patronum!" she kept flicking it and nothing came out. She decided to think about something happier, okay, something happier.
The first time she sang in public, that was happy.
"Expecto Patronum!" she yelled, a silver-ish flicker came out of it. She smiled and jumped around.
"EXPECTO PATRONUM!" she yelled again, a stonger silver whisp came out, she felt a little tired, so she stopped trying.
Ariana was busy listening to everyone's answers and eyeballing our :visitor" when she heard a familiar voice YELLING behind her. it was who other but one of her best friends josie. ariana was quick to say something to her "Josie! were not suppose to be doing the spell yet! your gonna lose points!!" Ariana practically SHOUTED out loud before she realized that she was in a class. she quickly sat back down hopeing no one had noticed
Jordan hung his head slightly, "I'm sorry proffessor." he said. He watched the silvery, glistening dove fly about the classroom for a while, mesmerised by the sheer beauty of it. Wow! He really wanted to do that!
He noticed the door open, "Hello Professor Scabior!" he greeted the Professor whom Jordan had only met once in a lesson. Was he the mystery guest then?

Minerva saw the History of Magic Professor come into the room. She quickly said "Hello" to him and then just looked down. She didn't feel he liked her very well or that she might annoy him so she didn't say anything else.
