The first floor was... certainly busier in a different way than Professor Schirmer's own usual haunt of the third level. Less injured children she supposed, and more Dash. She wondered if the professors of the first floor were more social as a result and made up her mind to befriend the healer. Third floor solidarity.
The classroom she'd chosen for the defense lesson had been one of her favourites as a student, and the tall blonde woman was a little bit dismayed to see how dusty and unused it was. Really, Hogwarts was it so hard to keep yourself clean? Even with elves that were off doing goodness knew what? A few quick charms and minutes later the room was sparkling.
Literally.
Unlike most of the Defense rooms, this one featured bright windows that allowed the light to stream in, diffused with colours and generally giving the room a bright and happy feel. The view looked out over the lake. There were no desks or chairs in the room and even the professor took a seat on the ground, waiting there with her feet tucked up comfortably beneath her for the students to arrive. She had a stack of books next to her and looked serene, if a bit distant.
When it was time, she charmed the doors to open, and greeted the students as they begin to file in.
ooc: the lesson will begin approximately 7.5 hours from the time of this post I'm simply opening it now so you can post arriving if you want to. The lesson has begun! Please act as if you were here all along if you haven't yet posted, latecomers will likely lose points. Please remember to follow Professor Schirmer's rules which can be found here.
SPOILER!!: the room looks something like this

In addition the room is now decorated for a party. Balloons and streamers are everywhere, there are tables set up with food and drink, and music playing to add to the festive feel.
Questions: What do you know, or think you know, about the Patronus Charm?
Discuss amongst yourselves some famous witches and wizards and their known Patronus forms. Given what we know about them; their achievements, their experiences, what do you think their Patronus form indicates about their personalities?
For those of you who can cast a Corporeal Patronus and know what form it takes, see if you can match up how it fits your personality. Younger students, you can work with students who do have a known Spirit Guardian, or you can look up mine, which is a Dove, or Headmaster Tate's which is a Mountain Goat, or that of another adult you know, even some of the historical figures we were discussing.
"I want you to think of your happiest memory. Something strong enough that you can focus on it easily, maybe something that makes you smile. It doesn't have to be relating to love. If you have more than one, lucky you! You can experiment to see which is best. You don't have to share it if you don't want to, but feel free to put your hand up and share if you do.

Levitation party activity! Click here for instructions. Read the post carefully and please take note of your classmates posts following this one too. Worth ten points!
edit: Activity still running, only please focus on the third part, AKA testing out your happy memory with a levitation potion.
The party is still going, you can help yourself to food or drink while we wait for a guest fetched via a patronus message. In the meantime the professor wants to know who can cast a patronus already and whether its corporeal or non-corporeal.
PLEASE be realistic with your character's abilities. The patronus charm is ADVANCED magic and little firsties should NOT be able to manage it. For the purposes of this class please pay attention to the following:
6th & 7th years: May be able to cast a corporeal or non-corporeal patronus, depending on character's skill level and experience. May learn how to do one or the other during the lesson.
5th years: May be able to cast non-corporeal patronus, depending on character's skill level and experience, very FEW and RARELY may a 5th year manage a corporeal patronus. May learn how to do one or the other during the lesson.
4th years: Depending on character's skill level and experience, very FEW and RARELY may a 4th year manage a non-corporeal patronus. May learn a non-corporeal patronus during the lesson.
3rd years: Depending on character's skill level and experience, may learn a non-corporeal patronus during the lesson. But its okay for them NOT to learn how yet too.
1st & 2nd years: Depending on character's skill level and experience, may learn an UNSTABLE non-corporeal patronus during the lesson. This means they might manage a slight whisp, but otherwise should NOT be able to cast a patronus. Its okay for them NOT to learn how yet too.
When we get to the spell casting aspect of the lesson, please note that anyone not being realistic may have their post edited or deleted, which I don't WANT to do but we're not all Harry Potter! For reference, Althea learned hers in 6th year non-corporeally, and managed a corporeal patronus in 7th year. Remember, just because your character might not be able to do it yet, it doesn't mean they never will!
As you saw, Professor Scabior came because I sent him a Patronus message. What do you think are the benefits of communicating via Patronus?
"Alright are you all ready to give it a go? Stand up if you are and make sure you give each other a bit of space. Wands out. The incantation is Expecto Patronum. Ecks-PEK-toh pa-TRO-num. You simply need to point your wand and focus really hard on that strong happy memory. Practice the incantation a few times to get the hang of it and then you may start. Those of you who can already manage it, please do encourage the younger ones and let them see how you do it. I have an activity for you too, that we'll start in a little while!"
Please note, I'm waiting to get an all clear regarding the recent Malware threat on SS before continuing, not because of any risk, rather because several people may be staying away right now and I'd rather be sure nobody is left at a disadvantage because they don't feel safe accessing the site. Expect that the lesson will continue on sunday. Everything is all clear Sorry for any trouble.
The latest instructions can be found in this post.
Kennedy stood in the same spot, thinking and thinking of what memory to use. There was one where his mom had bought him Xbox... then another when he hadn't been beaten up for a whole week, but those didn't seem happy enough. Kennedy tapped his chin.
Okay, here goes nothing.
He closed his eyes shut and re-visited the memory that wasn't too long ago. They day he had gotten his wand. Kennedy remembers feeling a warm feeling make its way to his stomach, it had reminded him of his mom... who was thousands and thousands of miles away.
He felt a strange pull, like if something was pushing his feet up. Snapping his eyes open, he saw his feet were just above the floor, not touching it, but not high either.
It was working.
Forgetting that memory, Kennedy thought of ... well that was private matters. It was all thanks to a mistletoe. Now, this memory caused his stomach do somersaults. It was the beginning of him and Aurora. Right then, he felt his feet being pushed up higher. He was several inches above the ground.
'Come on Nessie. Think. Happy memories.' Nessie thought hard squeezing her eyes shut concentrating hard on the memory of her sister. That's what made her the most happiest. She quickly threw her head back slinging the potion down her throat.

Oh, how she wished she could stay in this state. It was amazing to feel like she had no worries in the world. But all good things had to come to an end, and at least she knew that her memory was a strong one, at least in the comforts of the classroom. She lingered in the air for a few more moments before burping twice.
Slowly, she descended towards the floor. It was all too soon that her toes touched down. She still felt rather cheerful, and felt like laughing, though she figured this was more than likely due to the lingering after-effects of the potion. She wondered briefly if she could keep the bottle. It would be fantastic to practice further memories with it, just in case her initial memory wasn't strong enough to actually produce a Patronus in the future. After all, a happier memory may come along.
Once she was fully on her feet, she skipped over to the table that held chocolate and sodas. She needed a little something to make this sudden hunger disappear.
Victoria turned over to look at the ever so cheerful Kourtney. She started to fall back down to the ground, gently and lightly, but she still wore a cheerful expression on her face. Aww...why did she have to fall down...that was so great...
"You're going to produce a great Patronus Charm, Kourtney." said Victoria, rather mad at herself for not floating in the air.
Time to try again.
Victoria took a deep breathe before proceeding. She closed her eyes once more and thought about the best memory she can possibly think of, the best Christmas day ever. Her mind was imaging so deeply that Victoria didn’t even realize that she was drifting a few inches from the ground, then higher and higher, probably about where Kourtney had been. “YES! I did it!” Victoria exclaimed, opening her eyes. She looked down at Kourtney and smiled. She can also do the air dance now.
In the next box there were tables, table cloths, cups, utensils, and plates. By the this time some of the students already were setting up the tables and table clothes, some even had plates, so Eino took some of the utensils and cups to place alongside the plates. He approached the table and placed the cups and utensils down. Then, he neatly put the utensils in groups: all the forks together, knives, and spoons. He did this for several of tables before he began distributing the plastic cups in the same manner. On his way to one of the tables, Eino found himself face to face with a slightly younger Slytherin girl.

He said timidly, when he realized that the girl had intended walk up to him and speak to him. He listened to her as he placed the plastic cups he was carrying on a nearby table and then spoke. "I ought to think I should." Was his reply to her request. "The incantation for the Hover Charm is Wingardium Leviosa." He spoke very clearly, then removed his wand to demonstrate. "The wand movement is a simple swish and flick." He said pointing his wand to one of the cups, then demonstrated. Swish, "Wingardium". Flick, "Leviosa". The cup began to levitate, but before it could go too high into the air, Eino pointed his wand, and said uttered. "Finite.". The cup began to fall but before it could hit the floor Eino grabbed it and turned to the girl. "Nice to meet you, Kimalia. I'm Eino." He said and shook her hand, rather violently.

There definitely seems to be enough decorations already," she replied, sticking her last balloon to the edge of the table not far from the others. Just to give it a place as she didn't want to just stand around holding it for the rest of the lesson.
She'd glanced at the last box moments before Sierra had acknowledged it, but realized something else before she responded to that suggestion. "I'm sorry, I forgot to answer your other question earlier," she said with a little laugh. "I'm Stella, and you're right. It seems the only other thing left to do is test our happy memories." She still hadn't quite settled on if she was going to try the newer memory or see if her old one still was potent enough, but perhaps she could test both. She had to retrieve a vial first, so she walked over to the box not long after Sierra had and picked one up. Examining the pale blue potion inside, she wondered what exactly was inside it. That's where it would have helped if she was better at Potions, but she figured Professor Schirmer wouldn't hurt them. At least, she didn't think so, and looking around the room it didn't look like anyone was poisoned. Floating around, yes, but nothing worse, so she took the stopper out of her vial. Here goes, she thought, before focusing on her old happy memory as she drank a small portion. Now to wait and see if she floated.
Sierra could hear Stella talking, but the girl's voice seemed faraway, almost like it wasn't even there at all. Was Sierra ignoring her? No, not at all; but she was focusing so intently on what the potion she'd just consumed was meant to be doing that she'd lost a little of her focus on her immediate surroundings.
Her mind had taken her back to that awful day in December, when she'd woken up on a couch in an unfamiliar house. A cottage, it was, and it was located on a campground hundreds of miles away. She didn't figure that out until way later, though. Her mother had taken her there, and she was lost, wandless, and afraid of the woman she used to love. It had taken her weeks to be found, all thanks to that ridiculous father belonging to her 'twin half-brother'. Or whatever he was called these days. The man wasn't her father, thank Merlin.
She was focusing too hard on the bad memories, though. She opened her eyes to discover that she was still flat on the ground. She needed to focus on what happened next--what happened after the bad memories. Her eyes flickered over to Stella for a split second. "I can't get the good memory to come back," she said. She drew in a deep breath then closed her eyes again.
So, the memories he had were good memories, but apparently they weren't strong enough. He looked down at the ground and his feet were touching the ground. This caused Kennedy's forehead to ripple into a frown. This wasn't proving as easy as he had thought, and how could it? He hardly had memories that were like WOW! I happy!
No.
Kennedy closed his eyes, concentrating. Then a woman's smile made it's way to his mind. She had happy tears in her eyes, or so he thought. She was standing in the middle of a beautiful home that did not belong to neither of them. He longed for her warmth and affection. The woman that always made everything alright with a few words and a hug. The woman that scolded him when he did wrong. The woman that sacrificed so much for him.
A smile stretched along Kennedy's lips. The memory of seeing his mother after such a long time made him feel warmth and a sense of hope that he didn't understand, but liked.
The memory had been there all along and he hadn't even bothered to think of it.
Suddenly, he felt breeze at his ankles. That was weird...
... And he was several feet off the ground.
He did it! He managed to do it. Kennedy looked down in awe. This was SO cool. He didn't want ever get down, he wanted to fly and fly. Like a bird.

Having finished decorating, the prefect went to the third box and retrieved her small bottle of blue potion, finding a nice spot in the sunlight to sit. Wanting to test her memories strength out with this potion, she purposely pushed back the ones that could conjure her patronus. Once that was done, she opened the potion and down the bottle.
Already she was feeling lighter with the happiness bubbling inside her. A wide grin on her face, she was reminded of one of her first creatures lessons and started to inch her way off the floor. Another, more personal memory arose, and with it so did she. A whole four feet in the air, she lounged back with the giggles.

Tori started humming as the music changed to something way better than whatever old tune had been playing previously. She kept her eyes closed and kept thinking happy thoughts, like that time she sneaked into the prefect's bathroom, and all the fun she had had building snowmen here.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhh. Shame they hadn't won the competition.
The Slytherin popped an eye open and glared around at whoever had put that thought into her head. Darn. She was only hovering level at about the middle of the room.
More happy thoughts more happy thoughts!!

She drew in a deep breath then closed her eyes again.
Still trying to concentrate on her usual memory, the one that she'd used during Talia's lessons regarding Patronuses, Stella had essentially tuned out everything around her as she focused on the memory of seeing the cast list for the performance of The Tempest two years ago, and seeing that she'd gotten the role of Miranda. Which she'd wanted, even if it wasn't technically the starring role. It was the best female role, at least traditionally, so she'd wanted it. And finding out she'd gotten it had been an awesome feeling, even if it was tempered by the memory that she'd been playing opposite her ex-boyfriend. She'd gotten better at not thinking about him, so it was easy to just focus on the list, and the feeling she'd gotten from seeing it.
Even so, she looked down to find that she'd only floated like a foot and a half off the ground, which made her frown. Negating the feeling of the memory and the potion and returning her to the ground, where she looked over as she heard Sierra speak again. Apparently the Slytherin was having difficulties as well. "Try clearing your mind entirely. Focus on a white wall, or anything that is completely blank," she said to the girl. "Then try and think of your happy memory." It worked for meditation, so maybe it would work now. And she needed to try again as well. Taking a deep breath, she took another sip from her vial. Perhaps trying the new memory would work better this time, but she needed to clear her own memory from everything else, first.

Pips really was a dear. Althea smiled at the house elf and wondered where the other one, Nimma, was. She often saw the two of them together, or was that just her imagination? She watched the students get to it and noted there were some really great use of charms to get those decorations up, but equally, it was nice to see some kids getting into it and doing it by hand. She noted how polite and friendly they were all being, to the elf and to each other. Maybe they needed this then? This little party slash learning experience?
Still on her feet, Professor Schirmer walked slowly around the room, watching it come together with lovely streamers, and balloons decorating the walls and ceilings and yes, the floor. The tables were set up with tablecloths and cups and plates and everything, and of course Pips had brought a goodly amount of party food. There were even signs and banners up to add to the party feel, and the music was giving the atmosphere what it needed too. It was, all in all, very colourful and festive.
Now some students were beginning to try out the potion with their happy memories and Thea watched calmly, knowing some would immediately levitate to a good height while others would barely leave the ground. As long as they had fun and learned at the same time, that was the goal. And even though Althea was one to be focused on manners, she couldn't help but crack a smile at the burping and the laughter and giggles coming from many of her students.

Because if we used the sticking charm, then the professor won't be able to get it off since it's permanent." Victoria suggested to the little girl.
"Not all sticking charms are permanent, dear. I'd manage." Althea winked at Miss DeCour. However a gluing charm was appropriate for sure. She watched the girl show Miss Lams and after an approving nod, walked on, ducking slightly as William Montcenaggio floated over her head. Impressive really, as Althea herself was quite tall. She headed past the tables and helped herself to a slice of cake, careful not to drop any crumbs as she nibbled at it. The confetti on the table was a nice touch, she noted, as Miss Bunbury sprinkled it festively around the plates.

Hearing Miss Carter call out, Professor Schirmer turned to the girl and watched with a mild sort of curiosity. Soon enough though, the girl managed it. Determination counted for something yes? Althea placed her empty plate aside and continued around the room.
Moving around Miss Hunter and her admirably enthusiastic dancing , Althea carefully dodged those students that had managed to levitate, smiling at them in approval. The side effects certainly were beginning to show, although that could partly be the fun and happy environment making the children smile and laugh. It was nice really, and impossible not to smile too. Professor Schirmer wondered if she should take a bit of the potion and join in, but surely, an authority figure such as herself ought not to go around burping, right? No it was best she stayed on the ground in case she was needed. Easier to supervise down here. She caught one student's foot and gently nudged them in the other direction, so they didn't bump the wall.

Quietly she sang along to one of the Wizard Rock songs on the grammophone. "Who needs a wand with your magic in me? Who needs a broom when with you I'm flying? Why would I need a love potion brewed? Aiden takes a sip of the aqua coloured potion while thinking of a happy memory. What could it be? Hmm... After a while, she finds out one of the happiest memory she could think of; when she received her Hogwarts letter. That should be it! Nothing could be better than getting a Hogwarts invitation letter, could it?
However, her legs still fixed on the ground. Strange, are her shoes to heavy or something?

The longer she was in the air floating, the harder it became to hold back happier memories to test the strengths of others, but she was still managing. Only just. Arya flipped through the air at slowly, and as she did so, floated higher with the addition of happy memories. She was full of them!
Her full height had been reached just moments ago, though she showed no signs of stopping at there. The Puff prefect had managed to make it over to the large windows, placing her hands on it to steady herself in the air while she gazed out at the lake.
More happy memories came.
She pushed off the window, flipping backwards and floating higher.

After the last intake of the potion, Aiden isolates herself from the class at the corner of the room as she tries to figure out what went on. Why didn't the potion work? That was probably her happiest memory ever. Wasn't it happy enough? Should she try with another memory?
The Slytherin gets back on her feet and sips the Levitating Potion. At the same time, she thinks of when she was sorted into Slytherin. If this still doesn't work, she might as well give up. She doesn't expect this to work in the first place.
... And she was right. Her feet are still on the ground, didn't move an inch of it.
Nessie felt herself lift off the ground she kept rising a couple of feet. She looked down at the ground her eyes wide. She hated heights. She looked back up and concentrated. Concentrating as hard as she could she could not burp. She floated towards the soda. Picking up a cup she downed it quickly.
louise took the potion, she though of something happy, anything at all, she though of the time she first came to hogwarts, her feet lifed off the ground a few feet, she then did a burp and came back on the ground, "does anyone need any help"

Pam looked up as the Grammophone started playing. She grabbed some treats from the table, and started spinning a little in place, careful not to run into anyone. She just listened to the lyrics and spun a little in place. The lyrics reminded her of Nate, and that made her happier than ever. She had spent countless hours crying in the dormintary imagining that face. He saw her. She could tell. But she surely wasn't going to let that ruin her class.
She put on a smile, and curtsied at Nate. "Thanks for the dance." She said, walking over to grab her soda.

Nate realized far too late that Pam was gone. He still stood, transfixed, for a few minutes before blinking and remembering he was in Defence Against the Dark Arts. He followed Pam to the soda table and took one, but didn't say anything to Pam. He couldn't. He couldn't talk to the girl who had clearly noticed him thinking of his freshest heartbreak. Instead, he moved over to the wall, sat down, and closed his eyes, listening to the lyrics of the songs playing. To his dismay, they made him think back and forth between Pam and Faina. Between his longest friend and the first girl he actually... loved. Nate shook himself. This couldn't be happening now. Not here. He got back up and joined in the festivities of the patronus party again.
