The first floor was... certainly busier in a different way than Professor Schirmer's own usual haunt of the third level. Less injured children she supposed, and more Dash. She wondered if the professors of the first floor were more social as a result and made up her mind to befriend the healer. Third floor solidarity.
The classroom she'd chosen for the defense lesson had been one of her favourites as a student, and the tall blonde woman was a little bit dismayed to see how dusty and unused it was. Really, Hogwarts was it so hard to keep yourself clean? Even with elves that were off doing goodness knew what? A few quick charms and minutes later the room was sparkling.
Literally.
Unlike most of the Defense rooms, this one featured bright windows that allowed the light to stream in, diffused with colours and generally giving the room a bright and happy feel. The view looked out over the lake. There were no desks or chairs in the room and even the professor took a seat on the ground, waiting there with her feet tucked up comfortably beneath her for the students to arrive. She had a stack of books next to her and looked serene, if a bit distant.
When it was time, she charmed the doors to open, and greeted the students as they begin to file in.
ooc: the lesson will begin approximately 7.5 hours from the time of this post I'm simply opening it now so you can post arriving if you want to. The lesson has begun! In addition the room is now decorated for a party. Balloons and streamers are everywhere, there are tables set up with food and drink, and music playing to add to the festive feel.
Questions: What do you know, or think you know, about the Patronus Charm?
Discuss amongst yourselves some famous witches and wizards and their known Patronus forms. Given what we know about them; their achievements, their experiences, what do you think their Patronus form indicates about their personalities?
For those of you who can cast a Corporeal Patronus and know what form it takes, see if you can match up how it fits your personality. Younger students, you can work with students who do have a known Spirit Guardian, or you can look up mine, which is a Dove, or Headmaster Tate's which is a Mountain Goat, or that of another adult you know, even some of the historical figures we were discussing.
"I want you to think of your happiest memory. Something strong enough that you can focus on it easily, maybe something that makes you smile. It doesn't have to be relating to love. If you have more than one, lucky you! You can experiment to see which is best. You don't have to share it if you don't want to, but feel free to put your hand up and share if you do.

edit: Activity still running, only please focus on the third part, AKA testing out your happy memory with a levitation potion.
The party is still going, you can help yourself to food or drink while we wait for a guest fetched via a patronus message. In the meantime the professor wants to know who can cast a patronus already and whether its corporeal or non-corporeal.
PLEASE be realistic with your character's abilities. The patronus charm is ADVANCED magic and little firsties should NOT be able to manage it. For the purposes of this class please pay attention to the following:
6th & 7th years: May be able to cast a corporeal or non-corporeal patronus, depending on character's skill level and experience. May learn how to do one or the other during the lesson.
5th years: May be able to cast non-corporeal patronus, depending on character's skill level and experience, very FEW and RARELY may a 5th year manage a corporeal patronus. May learn how to do one or the other during the lesson.
4th years: Depending on character's skill level and experience, very FEW and RARELY may a 4th year manage a non-corporeal patronus. May learn a non-corporeal patronus during the lesson.
3rd years: Depending on character's skill level and experience, may learn a non-corporeal patronus during the lesson. But its okay for them NOT to learn how yet too.
1st & 2nd years: Depending on character's skill level and experience, may learn an UNSTABLE non-corporeal patronus during the lesson. This means they might manage a slight whisp, but otherwise should NOT be able to cast a patronus. Its okay for them NOT to learn how yet too.
When we get to the spell casting aspect of the lesson, please note that anyone not being realistic may have their post edited or deleted, which I don't WANT to do but we're not all Harry Potter! For reference, Althea learned hers in 6th year non-corporeally, and managed a corporeal patronus in 7th year. Remember, just because your character might not be able to do it yet, it doesn't mean they never will!
As you saw, Professor Scabior came because I sent him a Patronus message. What do you think are the benefits of communicating via Patronus?
"Alright are you all ready to give it a go? Stand up if you are and make sure you give each other a bit of space. Wands out. The incantation is Expecto Patronum. Ecks-PEK-toh pa-TRO-num. You simply need to point your wand and focus really hard on that strong happy memory. Practice the incantation a few times to get the hang of it and then you may start. Those of you who can already manage it, please do encourage the younger ones and let them see how you do it. I have an activity for you too, that we'll start in a little while!"
Please note, I'm waiting to get an all clear regarding the recent Malware threat on SS before continuing, not because of any risk, rather because several people may be staying away right now and I'd rather be sure nobody is left at a disadvantage because they don't feel safe accessing the site. "It looks like everyone is almost done with the decorating and arranging the tables. When do we start drinking the potion?" Alyssa asked August. She was quite apprehensive about that part of the task.

The bottles contain a levitation potion, activated by happy thoughts. If you take a little sip and think hard about your chosen happy memory, and its strong enough, you'll float up into the air. The strongest memories will allow you to float up to the ceiling." And she was sure those of them who were potions savvy would realise that one of the ingredients was Billywig stings, as well as the use of a cheering charm in its brewing. Giddiness and happiness would be a bit of a lingering after effect.
"To get down to the floor again, you just burp. I'll mind your manners just this once!"
And of course one other thing.
"An elf will be along shortly with party food. Plenty of chocolate and plenty of soft drink for those of you that need happy fuel and burping fuel." She smiled around at the students. "And if you're floating around enough, you might just work up a hunger anyway, do feel free to help yourselves when the food arrives." Especially because Professor Schirmer wasn't usually one to allow food in her classes.
"If you don't levitate at all, try a different memory, or focusing harder. This is your chance to experiment and see what works for you." Althea advised. "Alright, lets get everything set up, shall we?"
OOC: Activity time! For this portion of the class, you'll be marked out of TEN POINTS for participating and following instructions. You'll need to make at least five posts, the first two need to be as instructed, getting the party set up: one decorating the room somehow (by hand is fine for students that don't know useful spells) and one helping to set up the trestle tables and the things that should be on it. Please work together! Take note of what others post and build on it. Interact and have fun!
The remainder of your posts should be taking the levitation potion and experimenting with it and your character's happy memories. I'll resume the class again as soon as I'm able, it will likely continue past this activity in 24-48 hours so you have plenty of time to join in. It'd be helpful if you title your posts.
Be creative and have fun, and remember Althea is still right here watching and she won't let anyone get hurt.... and there still aren't any chairs
About the levitation potion:
Aside from what is written in the description above, please note that your character's maximum altitude is approximately their natural height, though Althea said up to the ceiling, most children won't get that high unless you know they can cast a Patronus already.
You can have your charrie move around a bit, but no silly business such as flying out windows or anything of that nature.
Moving while levitating is slow, think astronauts in a spaceship in outer space.
Your character can levitate just an inch off the ground if you decide their memory isn't happy enough, or just feel lighter even if they aren't levitating at all. Feel free to experiment with the height/memory relationship as you judge whether or not the memory will be happy enough for a patronus.
Side effects include mild giddiness and lingering happiness, so feel free to include that if you wish.

But wait... was she allowed to charm other things out of her wand to add to the decorations? Maybe she could try...? Okay, maybe she shouldn't. Who knows what might happen if she started using spells she wasn't entirely confident with.
But... colour changing was allowed right? They could change the colours of these streamers or balloons and make them a bit more... colourful? Except... that wasn't entirely needed.
Kita shook her head before grabbing another streamer and levitating that up as well. She couldn't help feeling just that little bit happier. So many pretty colours everywhere!

Violet felt very light and kind of warm. She also felt like her arms were raising up of their own accord, though she wasn't conscious of raising them. She felt nearly as happy as she had when that fuzzy little black and white yearling voluntarily climbed onto her hand and let her scratch the spot behind his head. Squinting, she looked around to find she seemed to have raised an inch or so in the air and was hovering slightly above the ground. But the minute she looked, she felt herself drop to the ground again with a thud.
Hmm, that was better, but obviously not quite strong enough. Determined not to be the only student to fail at this assignment, she took the bottle and looked at the last small sip of clear light-blue liquid. She closed her eyes and thought and thought for the happiest memory she could find. Like on the Muggle movie her uncle had taken her to over the hols, recent scenes from school and Christmas raced through her head one by one as she reviewed her life this term. Suddenly, without her really meaning to think about it, the letter from her mother appeared in the foreground of her mind--the secret letter she had gotten while home for the break, the one in which her mother said they missed her and loved her and were working to be able to have her live with them, happy in a real home at last!
As she thought of this, she swallowed the last of the potion.

Ariana Smiled at Kita "no im not to good with the sticking charm as of now." Ariana said remembering the first time she tried it and got her hand stuck to parchment for a while "So i can levitate & you can stick!"
Immediately Violet knew this was the right memory. She felt a kind of wild joy flood through her whole being and felt herself rising up in the air. When she opened her eyes, she saw she had gone as high as the windows, but this didn't alarm her like heights usually did. She tried to move and it seemed like her arms and legs were moving through some sort of gel, and she just sort of moved slowly along like a big cloud on a summer's day. She could feel that she had a stupid grin on her face, but she just didn't care anymore. Heck, maybe she'd even put on that silly party hat MJ had given her!

Harvey got some streamers and starting putting up the streamers by hand as he did not any spells to stick streamers by magic. He got some sticky tape and stuck up some streamers around the room.
Jesifur took one of the little bottles, and touched her wand. She smiled as she remembered the very first time she touched her wand and it became hers. Holding on to that memory and the emotions it held she took a sip of the liquid. It didn't taste great, but not horrible either. She was still thinking of the moment in the wand shop when she held her wand. She was about to take another sip and realized she was not actually standing anymore. She set her mind back to the memory and hung in the air. As she thought about waving it and the magic that happened she noticed she floated a bit higher.

Kita grinned at Ariana and nodded. So the young girl can deal with the simpler Levitating Charm and Kita can do the sticking charm. "I'll handle the Sticking charm then," she said, letting out a small giggle. ...Let's hope nothing goes haywire. She stuck up the last bit of the streamer and waited for Ariana to start Levitating some more.
"And then, when we're done with this, you can help me set up some tables?" she asked, "You know, if you want to." She wasn't going to make the girl do something she didn't want to do.

After Harvey had finished sticking up the streamers he decided to set up some tables and decorate them. So he moved some tables into postition and put some plates and cutlery on it. He then decided to decorate the table with some streamers. He weaved some streamers around the 4 legs of the tables and also put some along the sides of the tables.
Once the table was set up, all the decorations were either up or in the hands of students, and the potions were set out, Nate went over and snatched a vial. He thought of the first memory he had brought up earlier: getting accepted to Hogwarts. Thinking of the exact moment he had gotten his letter, and his parents freaking out that there was an owl in their kitchen, Nate took a sip of the potion. He felt himself starting to float, but didn't get very high. Only about a few centimeters, his toes still hit the ground. Using the traction from his Converse, Nate tiptoed effortlessly over to the snack table, grabbing a soda and downing it. He let out a small burp and returned to the floor.
After everything was decorated, Pam got her potion. She walked to an empty space so that she wouldn't fall on anyone. She wanted to experiment with different memories. She thought she would try the one of when she first got her rabbit. She closed her eyes and remembered back a few years when she first found the little white furball. How cute she looked, and how much she stood out. She took a sip, and thought of how excited she was when her dad told her she could get her. She felt herself raise an inch or two off the ground. Happy with her progress, she wiggled herself, tongue sticking out in consentration, over to the snack table, and grabbed some candy, aswell as a bubbly drink. She burbed and returned to the ground.
Selina got to work and went over to the first box. She peaked inside and had to stop herself from fawning over the record of Veritaserum Revolver. They were her favorite band ever. All of the performers in that band were brilliant, especially the lead singer who was, in Selina's opinion, very good looking. Alas, he was twenty-six. Ah well, a girl could dream.
She put down the record and grabbed a few of the decorations. Her hand flew down to her wand and in one swift movement she levitated the streamers with a spell- Winagardium Leviosa. Then she quickly cast a sticking charm to make sure that the streamers would stay. She repeated this trick a few times before she moved onto adding some more decorations for their "party".
Nate had to concentrate to decide which memory to use next. He chose to think of when he had gotten his wand. "Here goes nothing!" he said as he took another small sip and flashed back to that day in Ollivander's with Pam, when his muggle money had become wizard gold right in his pocket as he held his wand. He felt himself float up off of the ground. He didn't know how high until he opened his eyes: about a foot and a half. Decent memory. Nate began swimming through the air, to no avail, towards the snack table again. Wriggling and flapping randomly, he made slow progress. With his fingers about an inch away from the soft drink that would release him from the levitated state, Nate burped from the effort of the motion. Falling slowly to the ground, he said, "Are you kidding me?" to noone in particular. He grabbed the soda anyways, wanting to have it for his next attempt, and began to ponder what memory to use next.

The fourth year moved to the second box and took some table cloths out. The tables already had cloths laying on their surface so she unfolded one from her pile and saw that it was kind of a napkin. The give moved to the nearest table, set the pile to the side and started folding the napkin in a triangle shape. Mrs. Brown would've been exhilarated had she seen Louisa doing it the right way. The Ravenclaw smiled to herself at the thought and kept folding each napkin, putting it on top of an empty plate a Gryffindor boy was lying down and then on to the other.
... they don't have to talk and actually acknowledge each other when they help, right? Louisa wasn't that chatty with strangers anyway.
On and on with folding napkins and laying them on a plate after a plate after a plate...

Your character can levitate just an inch off the ground if you decide their memory isn't happy enough, or just feel lighter even if they aren't levitating at all. Feel free to experiment with the height/memory relationship as you judge whether or not the memory will be happy enough for a patronus.
Side effects include mild giddiness and lingering happiness, so feel free to include that if you wish.

Tori bounced over to the box with balloons and started blowing them up eagerly. Unfortunately, the redheaded girl did not have a whole lot of air and so by the time other students had blown up three or four balloons, she had just filled up one.
Ah well. Tori flicked her wand at the wall and got her lonely balloon to stick there. Proud of her handiwork, she bounced over to the box of streamers next.

Nate looked at the last of the pale blue potion in his vile. "Perhaps one more memory," he said, calculating what he could make of the potion. Nate thought hard for this one. He had to go back, but not as far. He found the perfect memory: when he had discovered that he was in love with Pam. He though of his long time best friend, recently discovered metamorphmagus, and, most recently, his girlfriend. Nate drank down the remainder of his potion (it wasn't much) and thought of Pam as a whole. He thought of everything she was to him.
And he felt it.
Nate felt himself leave the ground. Opening his eyes, he saw he was higher than he had been before. He was about to try to figure out how high up he was when he started to roll in midair. As his face came to be closest to the ground he kept the soda glass facing up so he didn't spill it, and guessed that he was hovering about four and a half feet off of the ground. Nate took the glass of soda, upside down, to his lips, and drank. He burped a few times, losing altitude slowly but constantly. Eventually, his head made contact with the floor, and he braced his neck with his hands, slowly rolling out onto his back until he was lying on the floor.
"Professor Schirmer," he said, standing up slowly, still feeling lighter than usual, "I think I've found my memory."
Pam looked at her vial of potion. She had about two or three tries left. She had to think of what to try next. Then she thought of her dad. When she was younger, he would always sneak her a piece of chocolate when her mother wasn't looking. He would always get the sweetest type of chocolate. She wish he would send some soon, because she has no idea what brand it is, or were to get it. Even today he would give her some under the table at dinner, or right before bed when he came in to say goodnight.
She took a sip and allowed herself to be lifted in the air. She looked down, and realized she was a few feet in the air. About one or two. She decided to roam around a bit. She rolled herself onto her stomach, and started to 'swim' mid-air. It was a very slow process, and she got tired easily. She was glad to be close to the table, so she grabed her soda, drank some, and burped her way back down to the ground.

"Hey Kourtney!" Victoria greeted heartily, seeing a friend is always a pleasure. "Sure, of course. But let me just put this one on first." Victoria took another streamer and hung it on over on the door knob. Now it looks nice and shiny.
"Okay, you want me to help you set up the table cloth?" Victoria asked to make sure before moving on. She held the other end of the cloth and laid it on the top of the table. While Kourtney's still working, Victoria asked, "A sticking charm? A gluing spell should work better. Because if we used the sticking charm, then the professor won't be able to get it off since it's permanent." Victoria suggested to the little girl.

She gathered one end of the cloth and walked to the other side of the table, and helped the older Slytherin drape it over the table. She pressed her hands along the cloth to make sure that there were no wrinkles. She couldn't have those. The table had to be neat.

Selina returned to the first box to get the rest of the decorations she needed to set up. There, amongst the numerous records and streamers, were balloons. Grabbing a handful of them Selina returned to a seat to blow up each balloon. She restrained herself from doing this exercise with magic, after all she should learn to become more self-sufficient without the magic. So she placed her lips on her edge of the balloon and started to blow it up. She attempted to fill them up for several minutes until she placed down the balloon. Merlin this was hard without magic. Ah well, she was a witch after all, what was the harm in doing it that way.
She finished blowing up the balloons with magic and then tied them off around the room with the rest of her peers. Once that was all done she went over to the second box.

Alyssa looked down at the little bottles that the Professor had left behind inside the box. Each bottle contained pale blue liquid. She picked up a bottle and peered inside it. It looked harmless enough. "Here's hoping that it doesn't taste bad,"Alyssa thought to herself. Before taking a sip of the potion, she grabbed a bottle of soda too. "Just in case I need help getting back on to the ground," she told herself.
Now she was ready. Alyssa removed the cover and took a small sip of the potion. It didn't taste that bad after all. She then tried to think of a happy memory. She closed her eyes remembered the day when she was in Diagon Alley and her parents had surprised her by buying a Firebolt. She was so happy and excited that she now had her very own flying broomstick. She remembered hugging her parents and laughing with excitement. Alyssa opened her eyes and realized that she was only floating only a feet off the ground. "I guess that can't have been my happiest memories or I would been floating higher than this. I know it was a happy moment for me, but I now realize that I was also feeling apprehensive about attending a new school and meeting new friends. I guess I will have to think of another memory happier than this." Alyssa took a sip of the soda and burped. She slowly floated back to the ground.

Kourtney wants everything to be neat, doesn't she? She took so much time on getting the cloth unwrinkeled. Heehee...what a careful little child.
"The gluing charm is Lentesco," said Victoria after finishing the table cloth. "And draw a horizontal line while saying the spell." Victoria moved her wand back and force in a horizontal line to show Kourtney how it's done. "Do you want to try it or should I show you how to do it first?"
William thought about his dad. He really enjoyed watching the baseball games with him. William took the potion bottle out of the box where the professor lwft it. He drank the potion. William's memories were great. He is looking over the class high above it.

I'll do that right now." Alyssa ran over to the streamers and taking out her wand she waved it at the streamers and said "Wingardium Leviosa". The streamers slowly floated up until it reached the same height as the other streamers Louisa had already glued them to the wall. Then she did the same to the rest of the streamers that were still lying on the floor. Soon there were streamers floating in the air above her head. "I'm all done here, Louisa. Again thanks for letting me help out with the streamers."
