The beginning of a new term is finally here and the cool September air is lightly rolling in through the windows cracked open on the south side of the classroom. The classroom is set up quite normally, with several rows of desks, split into three columns for easy access to the front of the room. In the front of the room is a standard chalkboard with a slightly taller than normal wooden table a few feet in front of it. To the left is the professor's desk.
At that desk sits the new Charms Professor, Pierson Fuller, his feet comfortably propped up on his desk as he finishes his post-breakfast apple and watches the students file in for Charms class.
Say hello if you wish, but class will begin shortly!
OOC: Class has begun! If you are late, please don't announce it. Just pretend you've been here all along!
Adrienne had heard of this spell before, of course, and she was pretty sure it was what Papie used when he dropped things and just sort of waved his wand in their general direction and they stopped falling. He did it wordlessly, though, which she was in no way able to do, (nor would she be any time soon), so it was probably best for her to practice the incantation a bit like Professor Fuller had said to do before actually trying the spell.
"Arresto Momentum." Was that right? Or was the emphasis on the first syllable? "AR-rest-oh MOH-men-tum." No, that sounded kind of silly and not particularly right. "ah-REST-oh moh-MEN-tum." There, that sounded better. She said it again. "Arresto Momentum," and then a couple of times under her breath. Adrienne glanced around to make sure that other people were doing the same thing, and yes, they all looked equally stupid, that was good.

He still hadn't decided what he should practice on. Probably something not too valuable since he didn't want to accidentally explode something that was worth anything. Not that he thought he would but, y'know, just in case. West rummaged in his bag, and then in his pockets, and came up with a guitar pick. Okay. Sure. That'd do.
He practiced flipping it in the air a few times, and tried to work out how he'd manage doing that and cast the spell at the same time. But then solution: he looked at Beezus.
....
"Sure." He held the guitar pick out. "But lets just toss them in the air, not at each other yeah?"

Sure. Working with an Odessa with this one then, eh. But he didn't want to toss things at each other. She wanted to toss things at each other, because well, "It would be more challenging if we toss it at each other though." You know, aiming something in each other's faces just like the scenario presented by Professor Fuller....except for the paralysis and broken neck part. "I mean, a guitar pick won't really hurt if it hits me in the face, will it?" Stubbornness was showing, alright. "And...what I'm going to hit you with won't hurt either if ever you can't do the charm on time....which I doubt would happen." He was good with charmwork, she knew that.
Oh, and the thing she was going to toss at him? She had to rummage her bag first. ...And found....a hair clip. Beezus waved it in front of the Slytherin.

Gummy worms...gummy worms...gummy worms.
She knew they were in her bag somewhere and so she continued to dig around, brow furrowed. Why was it she carried so much stuff around with her again? The whole 'always be prepared' attitude was all fine and good until you needed something that was buried underneath all sorts of other junk. Merlin.
"Ah-ha!" There they were! The blonde pulled the package open and took a few gummy worms out, placing them on her desk. She then rolled the package up and stuck it carefully in the front pocket of the bag. She didn't want it getting lost again, see?
Now to slow it down...
The seventeen year old tossed one up pretty high, just to see how long she'd have to cast the spell. It was sort of difficult, considering she was going to be doing both. And she didn't have much time, it seemed. Gummy worms fell pretty fast. Of course she could try a lighter object. Hmm.

Notes were being taken, a little hastily but they were still being taken. He did occasionally looked up at the Professor every now and then, and once, just in time to see the man perform a demonstration which including throwing a piece of chalk. Alec's eyebrows shot up, impressed, when the chalk stopped right near Theo's head. ... WHOA. That was impressive! And... it looked like something out of an action or a spy movie. Alec was definitely going to remember that. Nodnod.
... And it was their turn to practice the spell? Okay. Yeah.
He placed his quill down and cleared his throat. Practice first, yeah? Ah-REST-oh... Mo-MENT-um... Hey, Mo's name was in there! ... No. Practice. Even if the spell seemed simple enough to say. Concentration was still required in this case, right? "Ah... REST... oh..." Slooooooowly. Enunciate. "Mo... MENT... um... Ah-REST-oh... Mo-MENT-um... Ah-REST-oh Mo-MENT-um..." Simple. It seemed simple.
"Arresto Momentum... Arresto Momentum!"

"Repeat after me: Ah-REST-oh... Mo-MENT-um... Good. Quite simple, yes?" Pierson unholstered his wand and tossed the piece of chalk several feet in the air, over the head of the male Slytherin Prefect's head. "Arresto Momentum!" he said with a short wave of his wand towards the white stick of chalk, and it froze, just a few inches above the Prefect's head. With another flick of his wand, he summoned it back and caught it in his free hand.
I want you all to try it out now. First, practice the incantation without your wand, but that should be quite easy. Then, do what I just did. Toss something in the air, I don't care what: a pencil, a textbook, your tablemate -- just joking, Kettleburn -- and first try to slow it from hitting the ground too fast. Then throw it up in the air again and completely stop it. Don't slow it, stop it. Don't let it hit the ground. Make sure your intentions are clear. Ready, set, go." Piers tucked his wand away and turned to write the instructions on the board:
1) practice the incantation
2) slow the momentum of the object
3) completely stop the momentum of the object
OOC: This task must be done in no less than three posts. I'm not picky about how you divide them up. More is fine, but you'll only get points for three. You have about 36 hours to complete this task before we move on to the next!
Logan managed to look around seeing some girls in the class loking so entranced by Professor Fuller and it actually made Logan chuckle to himself and shook his head. These poor girls need to stop thinking that being all googly-eyed with him isn't going to earn you more house points. How pathetic... Finally the professor was done talking. If he talked any longer Logan might have fallen asleep. So now it was time for all to practice? Well this should be interesting. Logan grabbed his wand spinning it in his hand before placing it on his desk and tilted his head back and slowly and obnoxiously enunciated, "AR-rest-oh MOH-men-tum. AR-rest-oh MOH-men-tum." Huh that wasn't so bad. Picking his head up he then grabbed his wand, and held it in his hand just holding it and not moving it as he just simply said, "Arresto Momentum. Ok, that's enough of that rubbish." Now it was time for the fun to start.

Sophie listened to the professor go on and on as he posed question after question. They were good questions, but questions Sophie didn't really have an answer or even a thought about. Intention, hmm? So that was the trick to it all. After that, no matter how hard she tried, all she could think about was painting the walls by waving her wand. It sounded like fun, but...that wasn't what this lesson was all about.
There was a demonstration then, which Sophie did pay attention to, and then they were meant to practice on their own. Sophie flicked out her wand and held it carefully in her hand. First, the incantation, though. "Arresto Momentum," she clearly said, her wand not moving at all. Trying it again, but a bit stronger, she said, "Arresto Momentum!"
There. That should give her a good casting. If she could get the wand movement right, that is. Hopefully a simple, short wave wouldn't be hard. Although she felt sort of silly, she began waving her wand around in the short movement the professor had. So all she had to do was put them both together now, and she should have a charm!

Stopping things from coming at you completely sounded way cooler than just letting them hit his face. Chris went from excited to freaked out to bored and back to excited. Getting to use his wand in class since he hadn't managed to lose it this time sounded fun and doing the actual spell would be way easier than it sounded, he was sure.
Sitting up straight, Chris began saying what he thought the incantation sounded like. "AH-rist-uh Mo-men-TUM" That sounded right enough to him. Arresto Momentum. How hard could it be? He glanced around the room, listening to see how everyone else had been saying it. In all honesty, he hadn't been listening when the Fuller was saying it but it wasn't his fault that he was so focused on the man's facial hair!
"Ah-REST-oh?" That sounded much better. "Ah-REST-oh Mo-MEN-tum. Ah-REST-oh Mo-MENT-tum" He figured that was enough but he didn't want to actually do the charm and say it wrong and accidentally have something hit his face so he sat there practicing how to say it a few more times.

Nigel took a some detailed notes before turning his attention back to what Professor Facial Hair was saying. That was a pretty long winded answer to just practice the spell and trying it out.So he wanted us to not use our wands at first. But what if you could do the spell already. It was not that hard. Just point, aim, and cast. No fancy wand movements. Besides waving your wand, of course.
See not that hard to say. Nigel began to throw a pencil in the air and watch it stick right into his desk. It was pretty fun. Plus Nigel would have to stop the pencil eventually with the spell. But for now lets just have some fun.

Alright so they were learning Arresto Momentum. That should be a simple spell to learn because he grandma uses it all the time when we were little. Plus she taught him a little bit how to use it, for just incase matters. He smiled and copied down the spell the professor posted on the board. Then he was practicing saying the incantation.
Yup he got the hang of it. He was ready to try out the spell. It is cool to slow things down or stop them. Both of them are the same thing right? According to the professor they weren't.
Sitting upright in her chair she repeated the spell she needed to use. “Ah-REST-oh... Mo-MENT-um” said Sonea in a whisper and wrote the correct words on her parchment while she looked at the words the professor had wrote for them. Hmm, that didn’t sounded so difficult… She was convinced that she could do it, so she wasn’t worried at all about this lesson. But while she listened to the words from the professor she frowned, she had never done something like this before so she wondered if it would take her long to do it good, but… she was still convinced that she could do it!
When the professor was done with talking she practiced the spell as he wanted. She repeated the words over and over, until she was SURE that she knew them correctly. “Ah-REST-oh... Mo-MENT-um… Ah-REST-oh... Mo-MENT-um… Ah-REST-oh... Mo-MENT-um!”
Convinced that she knew how to do the indication she grabbed her wand out of her PINK wand holster, she had bought her new pink holster a few weeks ago in the Diagon Alley and she was really happy with it, simply because it was pink… And looked around her for something she could use to practice the spell.
The shout of excitement and look of utter glee on the little Slytherin's face had Mikey scowling at HIM.
"Oi, sit down you. Or I'll throw YOU out the window." Little git.
"I haven't even started Kettleburn." He was in an annoying mood today and who better to annoy then your best friend? Really, she should be used to this behaviour of his, it happened often enough.
While she was crossing her arms and huffing at him, Mikey leaned back in his chair and placed his hands behind his head.
"Maybe you could use Arresto Momentum to stare at the Prefect longer." HAHAHAHA!!
IGNORING YOU HARDER. SO MUCH IGNORING. CAN'T HEAR YOU.
Except Zahra got up, MOVED HER DESK A FEW INCHES AWAY, and sat back down roughly. Shut UP, Toussaint.

First place to start in any Charms class was practising and becoming familiar with the incantation to be used. Wand movement too but this one was real easy so there was no need to spend much time on it. They'd done this spell before. Watched seeds fall and stopped them from going splat. It wasn't tlike this was something completely new, which meant she was less likely to mess it up. Woot!
Lex perked up a bit hearing they could toss their tablemates--except she wouldn't be tossing Lottie because...just no--but then he quickly put in that he was joking. It was like putting a get out of Azkaban free card in her hand then snatching it back right before she could raise her wand at the next idiot to walk by.
Not cool Professor, not cool at all.
She'd settled with something within reach. Lex fished into her pocket and pulled out a chocolate frog. More incentive to not have it go splat on the ground.
She placed it on the table and humoured the Professor by first practising the incantation. "Arresto Momentum...Ah-REST-oh... Mo-MENT-um….." Like she said, they'd done this before.

Nigel almost forgot what he was supposed to do. He was having a quiet laughing session by watching the Gryffindor get hit in the head with multiple erasers. Quite Funny. Nigel did not feel the need to stop them. Since it was nothing dangerous and seemed like she started doing the class assignment. Nigel stopped throwing the pencil and remembered he was supposed to stop the pencil in mid air. Wait not stop. Slow Down. That was it.
Nigel threw the pencil in the air, pointed and waved his wand at it, and cast
"Arresto Momentum".
See it slowed down. Now why couldn't Herbology or even Divination be this easy.

Alright, there, Adrienne had gotten the incantation well enough by now, and she was going to stop looking like a fool muttering under her breath and actually start doing magic now. She picked her wand up off the table with her left hand and got a good grip on it, going over once a quick wave motion without any incantation.
Thoughtlessly, she picked up the first thing she saw on her desk, the half-empty ink bottle. Adrienne lifted it up and dropped it to the ground, waving her wand and saying, "Arresto Momentum!"
...and there was a shattering noise. She winced at the sound and stared blankly at the ground, where a puddle of black ink was rapidly expanding on the desk below her.
"Oh, shoot," Adrienne snapped, hoping that nobody was looking at her. "Um, Tergeo," she said, using her wand to siphon up the now useless ink. "Reparo." She picked up the fixed ink bottle (although the cracks were still clearly visible, at least there wasn't broken glass on the floor anymore), and put it miserably on her desk. That hadn't gone too well.
Looking around her she found something she wanted to use for her practice, inside her bag she had a pink hairbrush and it was strong enough to NOT break when it would fall to the ground, and yes, she knew that it was almost impossible for her to do the spell almost immediately correct, she hoped that she could do it, but if she was realistic she knew that she wasn't good enough to do it. But she tried it!
She tossed the hairbrush in the air and pointed her wand at it while she spoke the spell, "ah-REST-oh - mo-MENT-um!" while she waved with her wand. And the spell worked, but not as she wanted... Her pink hairbrush shook a little in the air but didn't stopped or even slowed! It just fell to the ground! "Ahrgggg!" The second year old made a irritated sound and tried it again after she had grabbed her hairbrush from the ground.
Adrienne sighed heavily and decided she'd better try again, only maybe with something a little less breakable. Also, she'd lost a whole half-bottle of ink. She took a notebook from her bag- nothing important in here, no- and held it up above her head, so there would be more falling time.
Three... two... one... DROP! "Arresto Momentum!" she called hastily, waving her wand, and then cringing in anticipation of the loud slapping sound that it would make when it hit the ground but, to Adrienne's complete surprise, there was none. She cracked an eye open and smiled as it descended slowly towards the ground with a soft thump. Ha! She made a 'yes' motion and grinned at her success, picking up the notebook and placing in gently on her desk.
After saying the incantation about a dozen other times obnoxiously Logan was now ready to get his "Charms" on. Spinning the wand in his hand again and he looked around to what he could use for part two of this in class assignment. He patted along his pockets to see if he hand anything with him, but all he could find was his guitar pick and he didn't want to lose that. He knew how sloppy he gets during in class assignments and pretty much loses everything. He put his guitar pick back in his pocket before then thinking about something, he then pulled his guitar pick out and decided to just use it. If he lost it...it would be his fault so now he had some incentive to not lose his guitar pick.
Looking at it for a moment, he then exhaled out softly and tossed the guitar pick up in the air watching it before holding his wand out pointing it to the pick and then, without moving his wand he said "Arresto Momentum!" The pick just dropped down to the desk and Logan stared at the pick with a raised eyebrow. "Huh? I thought it would work..." ;pgan scratched his head and picked up the guitar pick again and looked at it. "You're supposed to slow down! Logan huffed and felt like he was about to give up, but then again...second time is a charm. Might as well give it at least one more shot before he felt like taking hia annual class nap.
Holding, the guitar pick in his hand he closed his fist and took a moment before tossing the guitar pick up again and watched it come right back down again. He lifts his wand up and with a slight wave of his wand he then said one more time, "Arresto Momentum." And watched to see the guitar slow down it's falling speed as he managed to slow it down and he chuckled to himself shocked that he actually pulled it off. He felt accomplished. Gott I did it! HA HA! I actually did something right for once! TAKE THAT DOUBTERS!!!! WUNDEBAR!!!
Scribble... Scribble... Yup. This was definitely the kind of spell that will get in his personal spell book!
He had seen thiis spell. Father used to saved him from falling off a tree when Angeal somehow managed to get up there without much effort. Magic.
And now, he was learning this spell. He listened to how the others spoke their incantations just to make sure he was on the right track. He also joined, muttering the incantation "Urrest-oh mo-ment-um." That didn't sound too good... Let's try again. "Uh-restoh mom-ent-um..." Neither did that one. "Uh- Arr--" mumbled the boy alone before he momentarily gave up, listening to the other students again. "Ah-rest-oh mo-ment-um..." When he finally got the incantation right, Angeal muttered in a few more times before he took out his wand to practise the wave just like the professor demonstrated earlier.
Tora quickly put down her wand so she wouldn't accidentally perform the charm while only practicing the words. Ahem. "Aresto Momentum" She smiled. Well, that was easy. "Aresto Momentum", "Arestooooooo Mommeennnttuuuuummmmm" she laughed as she worked the words around in her mouth.
Seeing that she was getting strange looks she blushed a bit and said softly "Aresto Momentum". Maybe next time she practices a spell she shouldn't be quite so loud
Still a bit puffed-up and pleased about her previous success, Adrienne lifted her book again and prepared to drop it. Three... two... whoops! "Arresto momentum!" she said, and it drifted slowly to the ground like before. Adrienne frowned. Not quite what she'd intended... she tried again, lifting the book above her head and saying the incantation. "Arresto momentum!" And the same thing happened. Adrienne cursed, annoyed that she couldn't actually get it to stop. What was she doing wrong.
Several failures later, she figured it out- it was all about concentration. Thinking hard about it stopping in midair, she waved her wand (a bit overenthusiastically, narrowly missing elbowing her tablemate) and said, "Arresto Momentum!" Adrienne grinned in delight when it stopped, mid-fall, and she reached down to pick it up out of midair and placed it back on the table. Success!
He was having serious trouble comprehending this point of this lesson. Mr pretty face, or whatever name was, was in his opinion a subpar Professor who had obviously only been hired for his looks. S'not that he had any though, yeah? Ascanius just wanted to be done with this lesson and get out of here. The sting of disappointment that the lady with the long legs had not returned was still fresh.
Moving on to do the actual assignment, he aimlessly twirled his wand around like a drumstick and rummaged through his pockets for something to throw. Eventually he found a button that had broken off his robes earlier. This would work.
Testing it a few times, he tossed it up and down in his hand. Actually, this spell would have been fascinating with a yo-yo.
Once it seemed good, he focused solely on slowing the thing down. He wanted it to move like it was passing through water. Nice a slow. Toss. Wave. "Arresto Momentum." The button fell quickly into his hand until it hit his palm and then slunk slowly back into his fist.
Okay, now she needed to do it again and to do it CORRECT! She was a third year now and she wanted to do it good this time! So she flipped her hair, still with the pink highlights Daichi had given her, over her shoulder and pointed her wand again at her pink hairbrush while she threw it in the air, "ah-REST-oh - mo-MENT-um!" She made a waving movement with her wand and... this time it worked! Her pink hairbrush slowed down a little and fell eventually back in her hand! "YESS!!" She shouted while pumped her fist into the air in celebration and laughed! It had worked this time, she was SOOOO good!

Okaaay. So he'd practiced the spell a lot now. He as pretty sure that he could do it. Well he could say it anyway. And Clement was sure that was half of the business. Now he just had to hope that he could actually do the spell when it came to it. He had to have some confidence in himself though. He had passed his charm OWL so he must have some skills in charms. He just needed to figure out what he was going to attempt to slow down. Hmm. A book maybe? Yes. That would work, seeing as he did have a book. He bent down to his bag, and pulled out his charms book. Perfect. He held it in his hands, and nodded. Yes. That looked good.
Nowww. He had to drop it to the floor. Then do the spell. That sounded good. Pulling out his wand, he held the book in his one hand. "Three...two... one...." He murmured to himself, before dropping the book, and muttering. "Arresto Momentum." He didn't think it was going to work, but then it began to slow down, until it thudded to the floor gently. Good job Belrose.

Watch out for those flying erasers."
She was only making this worse for herself. Pierson held his hands behind his back and continued to walk around the room...
