She was just killing him today. Her comments had him laughing again and he had to squeeze his sides because he was starting to get a stitch in his side. Like the Professor was going to throw him out the window.
He didn't have an answer for the Professor because he had never used it, he hadn't seen anyone use it, he had heard about it being used years ago but someone had already given that answer. Although he wished they would have learnt this earlier then he could have used the charm when Alexa was throwing things at his face by the Whomping Willow. Quote:

He didn't LIKE being unpleasant, but he really didn't like disruption in his class. "Don't make me separate you two." EYES. LOOKS FOR YOU.

Nicola tilted her head after he done so and was now facing the class again. She then paused when he had asked if any of them knew from history when or who had used this incantation. Now, granted Nicola had been attending this school for almost two years now, but she still didn't entirely have the full knowledge of its' history. Although she did learn something amongst her nosy searches through the Common Room, which caused her to raise her hand.
"Correct me if I am wrong Professor, but I was reading something in an article I had found about one of the Professors who used to teach Charms here some time ago..I think his name was...Filius Flitwick, if I'm saying it correctly..", she paused, "But regardless, since he taught the class here, I would obviously assume that he knew that incantation & most likely taught it to his students as well.."
Did it answer his question? Maybe not fully, but she felt that it was a pretty good & a valid point to make notice of. So that was good enough for her. And that was that. Quote:

And just like that she wasn't sure if she liked her answer all that much anymore, and sat with a strand of her pulled taught between her slender fingers. Maybe she'd get more into it again if they got to try to stop things from falling. But the idea of doing a trust fall with her fellow classmates had her a bit worried. Quote:

The professor listened to each example the students gave and nodded. "Yes, very good. All good examples. Though I highly suggest not jumping off any sort of tower unless you trust the spellcaster's ability to get the charm right with your life. Literally." Just saying.

Which she then described literally. "Exactly. Thank you. Meaning, quite simply that you can stop the momentum the object. Stop the movement. It's quite straightforward." Nod nod. Very good.

So Sophie had been right after all! She just hadn't known the name of the charm. She'd said to stop it in its tracks or freeze it, which was basically what this charm did. She really needed to learn her charm names.
Anyway...
"Oh," Sophie said, raising her hand. "Isn't it used in Quidditch to slow the speed of the Quaffle?" She might only be a first year, but she was a Greingoth, and all Greingoths knew their Quidditch. She never really understood why some people wanted to slow the Quaffle, but she guessed it was to keep less accidents from happening. Quote:

Toby knew it, of course he did. It was in a lot of the Quidditch books he'd read, but people had already used the Quaffle example. It was a pretty simple, but important, spell to know, and that was obvious from the amount of examples that included falling from a great height. There was ONE thing though that made him think.
He raised his hand. "Professor, I don't have an example-" because his parents were non-magic and his grandfather hadn't ever appeared to use to spell since he'd moved in with them... also a lot of the examples he could think of from history had already been said "-but I've always wondered about the Quaffle thing. If the spell stops the quaffle from dropping too quickly, then how come Chasers can still throw it through the air and it doesn't slow down? Because the spell literally arrests momentum, but momentum isn't just downwards." He paused, fiddling with his quill again just for something to do with his hands. "So I guess... does that mean there's a way of specifying what kind of momentum it slows down? Is that where it gets tricky, like you said?"

This could help so they don't harm themselves when they fall." She just didn't want to give the same answer, so it was just a thought really.
"Yes, you are all right. There are quite a few uses of this spell involved in Quidditch and flying. Most commonly used on quaffles, as most of you said. And to answer your question, Tobias, yes, this is indeed where this spell can prove to be tricky. Daisy Pennifold created this charm to slow down the quaffle if the players in a Quidditch game dropped it, so they wouldn't have to dive all the way down to the bottom of the pitch to retrieve it. There is, then, the question of how... How does one bewitch the quaffle in a way that it only slows down when you want it to -- for example, when it is dropped and not when it is being tossed from player to player? And, how do you differentiate from slowing an object from completely stopping an object?"
Pierson paced the floor slowly as he gave the students a moment to think about those questions. Yes, it was seemingly a simple spell, but once you got to the nitty gritty of which aspect of the charm you wanted to use, it could easily become slightly difficult.
"The answer is, quite simply, intention. Magic is in your body -- in your mind, and it is channeled through your wand. Or, if you are quite the expert, through your entire being. But wandless magic is a different subject. Intention, my friends, is everything. If you cast a disarming spell with the intention of painting a wall, it's obviously not going to work because that isn't what the spell is designed for. Arresto Momentum is designed to slow or to stop an objects speed. Which one it does when cast is entirely up to you."
Turning back around, the charms professor picked up the piece of chalk again and began writing on the board as he continued to speak, "Today we will be learning how to slow and how to stop an object's speed. We will first begin with learning the incantation and wand movement." Stepping away from the chalk board, he revealed what he wrote:
Arresto Momentum
ah-REST-oh - mo-MENT-um
Wand Movement: Wave "Repeat after me: Ah-REST-oh... Mo-MENT-um... Good. Quite simple, yes?" Pierson unholstered his wand and tossed the piece of chalk several feet in the air, over the head of the male Slytherin Prefect's head. "Arresto Momentum!" he said with a short wave of his wand towards the white stick of chalk, and it froze, just a few inches above the Prefect's head. With another flick of his wand, he summoned it back and caught it in his free hand. I want you all to try it out now. First, practice the incantation without your wand, but that should be quite easy. Then, do what I just did. Toss something in the air, I don't care what: a pencil, a textbook, your tablemate -- just joking, Kettleburn -- and first try to slow it from hitting the ground too fast. Then throw it up in the air again and completely stop it. Don't slow it, stop it. Don't let it hit the ground. Make sure your intentions are clear. Ready, set, go." Piers tucked his wand away and turned to write the instructions on the board: 1) practice the incantation
2) slow the momentum of the object
3) completely stop the momentum of the object
OOC: This task must be done in no less than three posts. I'm not picky about how you divide them up. More is fine, but you'll only get points for three. You have about 36 hours to complete this task before we move on to the next! |
