Well. This was also a valuable lesson for the Professor. Never use a hypothetical situation ever again. He had listened to all of their responses and understood where most of them came from. Pierson was nodding and slowly making his way back to the front of the room.
There were a few answers that he needed to comment on specifically as they came up.

"Okay, very good. Some of you suggested shield spells, which would work quite well. However, that is something you will learn in Defense Against the Dark Arts, I'm sure, though that doesn't make you any less right. Well done.
"Others suggested hexes, curses and jinxes, such as the blasting curse, expulso, reducto, et cetera. While those would succeed in obliterating said object, I would be worried about remnants of the explosion flying back and hitting me. The Impediment Jinx would work, temporarily of course, yes. But those are also things you might learn in Defense class, rather than Charms.
"Some of you brought up the feather weight charm, the cushioning charm, or merely slowing the object down. However... you would still get hit in the face. Good thinking, though.
"Then of course, a couple decided the classic stop-drop-and-roll method would do you good. You could try, but I would be afraid of damaging my broken body even further. That's up to you, though.
"And then, of course, some of you simply thought WAY too hard. Mostly Ravenclaws, I might add with no surprise. It was hypothetical. Don't over think. And to clear something up, a broken neck doesn't always mean full paralysis. And you can still speak with cracked vertebra, but this is not Anatomy class, so let's move on."
Although pleased with the answers he got, the professor was actually mildly surprised that only a few students had mentioned the charm that he was actually looking for. And when the first student said it, he nearly jumped for joy. But... Pierson Fuller didn't jump for anything, so...

OOC: PS: I know HP books say Arresto Momentum merely slows the target down. HP movies demonstrate it as stopping objects completely and I am going for BOTH, so just roll with me. As far as your answer goes, think book uses and movie uses of the spell. Or just make something up! |
