The beginning of a new term is finally here and the cool September air is lightly rolling in through the windows cracked open on the south side of the classroom. The classroom is set up quite normally, with several rows of desks, split into three columns for easy access to the front of the room. In the front of the room is a standard chalkboard with a slightly taller than normal wooden table a few feet in front of it. To the left is the professor's desk.
At that desk sits the new Charms Professor, Pierson Fuller, his feet comfortably propped up on his desk as he finishes his post-breakfast apple and watches the students file in for Charms class.
Say hello if you wish, but class will begin shortly!
OOC: Class has begun! If you are late, please don't announce it. Just pretend you've been here all along!
He had liked her answer. Out of all the answers, he mentioned what she said. Eliza held her breath for a few moments longer than necessary, then exhaled quietly to herself. Get a grip! Why are you being so weird? His response however, was something she'd considered, but hadn't really known how to say. She wasn't sure of her own strength with the spell, so it was quiet possible her casting wouldn't save her at all, but perhaps it might help someone else. She'd have to practice.
She thought about the Arresto Momentum spell, and while the obvious answer was to be used during Quidditch, both regularly and famously, she remembered a moment in her own life where she'd heard it. "Professor, aside from the Quidditch mentions, I remember my mom casting it really quickly a bunch of times when our cat tries to get into things on the counter. Usually trying to get at the milk jars, but she almost always catches them before it's too late," she explained with a small smile. So, it was a rather boring personal story, but it was what she'd thought so, why not be herself and say it? Though now everyone probably thought she was... she wasn't sure what. And just like that she wasn't sure if she liked her answer all that much anymore, and sat with a strand of her pulled taught between her slender fingers. Maybe she'd get more into it again if they got to try to stop things from falling. But the idea of doing a trust fall with her fellow classmates had her a bit worried.
Asher just sat there and gazed, glass eyed, at the board. He had no idea what the professor was talking about and was fairly sure he had never heard of Aresto Momentum. Aresto, he thought about the word. Aresto. Sounded like being arrest. He supposed arrest meant to be stopped, so Aresto should have something to do with stopping. Then there was momentum. Momentum and movement went along. "Oh, Aresto Momentum. Like in Quidditch where that witch who bewitched the quaffle."

Oh, okay... Arresto Momentum had some similar properties to Impedimenta, so Mo was gonna count that as a win. Not a right answer, but an 'almost right' answer. He wondered if Cat would give him cupcakes for getting an answer almost right.
"Professor, I bet you could use the spell to slow yourself down if you were jumping or falling from a great height. Like from Ravenclaw tower or something." Mo may have glanced at the Gryffindor Quidditch captain at that suggestion. New experiment?

Hmm. More tower jumping, though? Cactus got a thumbs up, that was the best answer so far.
Even better than hers, which was something.

Arresto Momentum. Sounded familiar. In fact, it sounded really familiar. "Some Beaters use it to keep the Bludger from smashing their face, usually in friendly games," Sky spoke up. If course, if it was a professional game, or a school one even, all bets were off. As in, so sorry if you trying to get your wand out, but I was trying to knock you out.
She was making note of the other ways that people were saying, though. Just in case.

Arresto Momentum. Cutty felt that was important enough to have written it down on his notes in his handwriting most terrible. He knew, from his experiences watching Harpies games that there was use of this spell, but he wasn't sure what sort of historical context Professor Fuller was looking for. He certainly hadn't used it before himself. His mother had, but not he himself.
Cutty decided to refrain from taking on this question, but he did listen to what others had to say for curiousity's sake.
Then some witch veered off topic for her own sake and Cutty's brows furrowed in annoyance. "Ahehh!" And, he was about to spit something about getting her answers on her own time, but some tiny girl about his age had spoken up volunteering to chuck another kid out of the window.
"Do it! Do it!" He stood up and shouted excitedly the annoyed scowl now wiped clean off his face, but replaced by something looking more like rapacity. Oh, he had to see this! What a fun class this was turning out to be.
HEY!!
The shout of excitement and look of utter glee on the little Slytherin's face had Mikey scowling at HIM.
"Oi, sit down you. Or I'll throw YOU out the window." Little git.

Minerva had calmed from first thinking yet another class was going to force beards on them. This was a nice thing to know that he wasn't going to do that. No he was going to actually teach. WOW a professor that was going to do what he was suppose to without first humiliating anyone. Not that Flamsteed didn't teach, no Minerva liked him, just not his jokes that always seemed to end up pointing her in a bad place whether he meant it or not.
Anyway she focused back on the lesson as she put up her hand she heard a very loud girl say about throwing someone out the window. Mikey. Her blue eyes snapped back to see that it was the boy from the summer. She had met, he was really nice why would the girl want to throw him out the window. "I don't think we need to throw anyone out any windows." She said politely to the younger student. Especially someone like Mikey Now she could name at least one in the room they could.
Minerva turned back to the professor, "Many have said quidditch sir, but what about Flying class? Could it be used in teaching flying in general. When students are new they could easily fall off. This could help so they don't harm themselves when they fall." She just didn't want to give the same answer, so it was just a thought really.

To be honest, Vesper didn't really know anything about the charm Professor Fuller had mentioned...but that was okay. She was too busy staring at his face...and trying to decide if she could get away with doing a rough sketch now...No one was paying her too much attention...which was just how she liked it. Most of her classmates were too focused on the professor to really bother, guys included.
Yep.
She was going to do that.
Grinning (and taking notes about the things at the same time)...Ves started inking out some basic lines, shifting between the piece of parchment and her notebook. See? She could do both at once.

"I'm going to punch that girl in the head, too. She's rude," Zahra told Mikey. Maybe she was just grumpy. But Professor Old So and So was NICE and LIKED her and THAT Gryffindor was the know-it-all-bossy-pants sort that no one liked.

His gaze went to the girl that Zahra was talking about and he let out a snort. "She's not being rude." He poked her in the arm with his finger. "You just don't like being shown up."
BWAHAHAHA!
She was just killing him today. Her comments had him laughing again and he had to squeeze his sides because he was starting to get a stitch in his side. Like the Professor was going to throw him out the window.
He didn't have an answer for the Professor because he had never used it, he hadn't seen anyone use it, he had heard about it being used years ago but someone had already given that answer. Although he wished they would have learnt this earlier then he could have used the charm when Alexa was throwing things at his face by the Whomping Willow.

A light giggle escaped her lips feeling proud of herself once more. She was very tempted to pat herself on the back once again. But she'd refrain for now. His hotness was continuing on with the lesson, as well as writing down the charm Arrestum Momentum on the board, which gave Nicola a moment to admire his lovely locks on his head.
...
Nicola tilted her head after he done so and was now facing the class again. She then paused when he had asked if any of them knew from history when or who had used this incantation. Now, granted Nicola had been attending this school for almost two years now, but she still didn't entirely have the full knowledge of its' history. Although she did learn something amongst her nosy searches through the Common Room, which caused her to raise her hand.
"Correct me if I am wrong Professor, but I was reading something in an article I had found about one of the Professors who used to teach Charms here some time ago..I think his name was...Filius Flitwick, if I'm saying it correctly..", she paused, "But regardless, since he taught the class here, I would obviously assume that he knew that incantation & most likely taught it to his students as well.."
Did it answer his question? Maybe not fully, but she felt that it was a pretty good & a valid point to make notice of. So that was good enough for her. And that was that.

"Yes, of course. You could use any of those levitation charms if you wished to." But this was now about Arresto Momentum. Which she then described literally. "Exactly. Thank you. Anyway.
Arresto Momentum.
Toby knew it, of course he did. It was in a lot of the Quidditch books he'd read, but people had already used the Quaffle example. It was a pretty simple, but important, spell to know, and that was obvious from the amount of examples that included falling from a great height. There was ONE thing though that made him think.
He raised his hand. "Professor, I don't have an example-" because his parents were non-magic and his grandfather hadn't ever appeared to use to spell since he'd moved in with them... also a lot of the examples he could think of from history had already been said "-but I've always wondered about the Quaffle thing. If the spell stops the quaffle from dropping too quickly, then how come Chasers can still throw it through the air and it doesn't slow down? Because the spell literally arrests momentum, but momentum isn't just downwards." He paused, fiddling with his quill again just for something to do with his hands. "So I guess... does that mean there's a way of specifying what kind of momentum it slows down? Is that where it gets tricky, like you said?"
Just, y'know, wondering.

"Yes, you are all right. There are quite a few uses of this spell involved in Quidditch and flying. Most commonly used on quaffles, as most of you said. And to answer your question, Tobias, yes, this is indeed where this spell can prove to be tricky. Daisy Pennifold created this charm to slow down the quaffle if the players in a Quidditch game dropped it, so they wouldn't have to dive all the way down to the bottom of the pitch to retrieve it. There is, then, the question of how... How does one bewitch the quaffle in a way that it only slows down when you want it to -- for example, when it is dropped and not when it is being tossed from player to player? And, how do you differentiate from slowing an object from completely stopping an object?"
Pierson paced the floor slowly as he gave the students a moment to think about those questions. Yes, it was seemingly a simple spell, but once you got to the nitty gritty of which aspect of the charm you wanted to use, it could easily become slightly difficult.
"The answer is, quite simply, intention. Magic is in your body -- in your mind, and it is channeled through your wand. Or, if you are quite the expert, through your entire being. But wandless magic is a different subject. Intention, my friends, is everything. If you cast a disarming spell with the intention of painting a wall, it's obviously not going to work because that isn't what the spell is designed for. Arresto Momentum is designed to slow or to stop an objects speed. Which one it does when cast is entirely up to you."
Turning back around, the charms professor picked up the piece of chalk again and began writing on the board as he continued to speak, "Today we will be learning how to slow and how to stop an object's speed. We will first begin with learning the incantation and wand movement." Stepping away from the chalk board, he revealed what he wrote:
"Repeat after me: Ah-REST-oh... Mo-MENT-um... Good. Quite simple, yes?" Pierson unholstered his wand and tossed the piece of chalk several feet in the air, over the head of the male Slytherin Prefect's head. "Arresto Momentum!" he said with a short wave of his wand towards the white stick of chalk, and it froze, just a few inches above the Prefect's head. With another flick of his wand, he summoned it back and caught it in his free hand.
I want you all to try it out now. First, practice the incantation without your wand, but that should be quite easy. Then, do what I just did. Toss something in the air, I don't care what: a pencil, a textbook, your tablemate -- just joking, Kettleburn -- and first try to slow it from hitting the ground too fast. Then throw it up in the air again and completely stop it. Don't slow it, stop it. Don't let it hit the ground. Make sure your intentions are clear. Ready, set, go." Piers tucked his wand away and turned to write the instructions on the board:
1) practice the incantation
2) slow the momentum of the object
3) completely stop the momentum of the object
OOC: This task must be done in no less than three posts. I'm not picky about how you divide them up. More is fine, but you'll only get points for three. You have about 36 hours to complete this task before we move on to the next!
Taylor smiled as the professor said that she was correct. She wrote down what he had on the board about the pronunciation and the wand movement. Tay repeated with him, "Ah-REST-oh... Mo-MENT-um..." Then watched as he demonstrated it. She giggled at his joke and smiled at him. Taylor listened to what he had said they should do and watched him write it on the board. She looked at the board then nodded. Okay... practice... its practice time... Taylor made sure that she had cleared her mind as she said, "Ah-REST-oh... Mo-MENT-um... Ah-REST-oh... Mo-MENT-um... Ah-REST-oh... Mo-MENT-um... Ah-REST-oh... Mo-MENT-um..." She frowned and closed her eyes as thoughts started to invade her mind. No... no... no... go away! go away! I cant do this right now... go the heck away... Taylor took a few deep breaths and tried again, "Ah-REST-oh... Mo-MENT-um... Ah-REST-oh... Mo-MENT-um... Ah-REST-oh... Mo-MENT-um..." She grumbled some more. Come on Taylor... clear your mind... you need to focus on Charms... you don't need to focus on anything but Charms... none of your problems... or of him... just on Charms... After a few more rounds of that, she finally was able to clear her mind and say it perfectly so it was time to move on...
"Repeat after me: Ah-REST-oh... Mo-MENT-um... Good. Quite simple, yes?" Then throw it up in the air again and completely stop it.
Marigold LOVED this class. ONE, he was a good looking teacher, mmmhhmm. TWO, she just loved Charms ANYWAY, so... One of her favorite classes by default. THREE, ACTIVITY TIMEEEEEEEE.
Marigold read the pronunciation and sounded it out slowly.
"AHresto.. No.. Ah REST oh moMENTo. Ah REST oh moMENTo. Arresto Momento!" She looked around and saw that people were still practicing the incantation so....
"Professor? Is the incantation for this charm Arresto Momento because it 'arrests the momentum' by any chance?"

Practice the incantation... Shouldn't be that hard. How cool was it that they were learning the spell... Now she could tell her grandfather that she could rescue her brother with him..Might even knock him off his broom on purpose to show her grandfather...Maybe?
"AH-REST-oh - mo-MENT-um" Nerida said without her wand even though thats what she really wanted to do was just pick it up and wave... Nope that didn't sound right.
"ah REST oh mo MENT um now that sounded right, Nerida repeated the incantation until she said it a few more times completely right, which took longer than what she had expected it to as she kept out pronouncing it wrong in some parts of the word.

West, as usual, was taking no notes. It was all up in his head with the memory he had. Notes weren't something that did him any good since he'd never need to look at them again. He didn't really need to practice the incantation either, it was a simple one, but he did anyways just so that he could say that he did.
"Arresto Momentum. Uh-REST-oh mo-MENT-um." West said carefully.
And just because it was the way you did things, he also practiced waving his wand. Second nature now though and all. Toss something in the air... he glanced towards those Gryffindor second years and then thought better of it. Hmm so what would he try it on?

Okay, it was official. Sky liked this class. Just randomly throwing things up into the air so they could practice a spell? Sounded like fun to her. Though, she didn't think she could get by with the thought that briefly crossed her mind......
Anyway, she copied down notes then started practicing the incantation. "Ah-REST-oh... Mo-MENT-um. Ah-REST-oh... Mo-MENT-um. Ah-REST-oh... Mo-MENT-um. Arresto Momentum." Yep, got it.

Well, she didn't get to know if the vanishing spell would be a good choice but she got to know about other options. Cassia paid attention and jotted down information and some spells and jinxes the others have mentioned. Might come in handy one day. No one knew.
The fifth-year didn't know if the class was fun or it watching and hearing the Professor was fun. She hoped it was the first. Will never know, thought. She scribbled the incantation on her notebook for no reason other than being used to. And she repeated it after the Professor and the others. Also, good thing that piece of chalk didn't hit Theo in the head. He wouldn't have been happy about it. No one wanted an unhappy Theo.
Leaning back in her seat, Cassia stared down at the incantation for a bit then held her quill. No need for the wand just yet.
"Arrestooo Momentuuum...Ah-REST-oh... Mo-MENT-um..." Was that too exaggerated?
"Arres-to Mom-en-tum," Much better. She glanced around her considering at whom to throw stuff. Or maybe she'd just throw something of her belongings up in the air.

Laura wasn't sure if she would be any good at this but she would give it a try anyway. "Arresto Momentum!" Laura said the incantation and smiled, maybe all her practicing had helped her. "Arr...est...o Momen...tum!" Laura was really happy with this.
Laura looked at Nerida, really couldn't she try and throw her older friend in the air and see what happens, nothing bad would happen right. Laura thought about it for a few minutes but knew she wasn't allowed to, so she just looked at her desk... what to throw into the air.
Benjy had been doodling, ahem, we mean, writing notes, on his parchment, and only now they were doing an activity zoned properly back in on the Professor. For the last few minutes, his mind had been considering whether one could spells like Arresto Momentum to make skateboarding tricks even more cool - or that was just a travesty, taking away some of the skill needed with magic. It was conundrum.
If he wanted to try though, he needed to know how to do the spell. He pulled his wand from his robes, and placed it carefully on the desk whilst he practiced the incantation. "Arr-es-to Mo-ment-um." No, that wasn't right. "Ah-REST-oh. Ah-REST-oh."
Now, what was something he could throw? ...preferably at Kalla's head?
[COLOR="RoyalBlue"] "I'm going to punch that girl in the head, too. She's rude," Zahra told Mikey. Maybe she was just grumpy. But Professor Old So and So was NICE and LIKED her and THAT Gryffindor was the know-it-all-bossy-pants sort that no one liked.

Sarah watched the conversation out of the corner of her eye. She wondered why she was going to be punched in the head. She was out of practice in physical fighting, but she could take pain from it. It was growing up in a boys house taught you.

"Yes, a very good and well-known example," he stated with an approving nod. He was about to move on, but she brought up another question... that was quite off topic. "Off topic, but yes, there is. Stop by my office sometime and we'll see what we can find." Now, back to arresting momentum.

Sarah hoped she would not forget to stop by his office, so she made a little note. She listened to what the teacher said with interest. intention was always important, she knew that, yet this just made it clearer.
Sarah then wrote down her notes. So she had to say it... "ah-REST-ah - mo-MEN-tum" she tried. Nahh.. wrong emphasis, "ah-REST-ah - mo-MENT-tum" she tried again. Maybe it was better to write down the transliterated version as well. She wrote that down and tried it again.. syllable by syllable. ah-REST-oh - mo-MENT-um" Great she had it. Now try again. She repeated it a few times every time going faster until her tongue was aquainted. She really should have done that spell as part of revision in the holidays, seeing as she learnt it before. Practice makes permanent after all.

Tsk. Tsk. Professor Fuller was a very interesting subject for the eyes of a Beezus Castell who was at the moment, letting her thoughts wander freely as the man was explaining things in front of the class. Of course, she was listening and comprehending what he was saying.
So. It was the Arresto Momentum spell that he was looking for, is it? Lucky Jake....he must be studying for NEWTs now. Mental note to see him later and possibly swap notes. Yeah, yeah. Back to the class..... Intention. That seemed to be the focus of this lesson. The incantation was easy enough. "Arresto Momentum. ah-REST-oh - mo-MENT-um." She got the hang of it now. Wand waving was also happening.
Okay, now ready set go?
She had to practice on stopping AND slowing an object now. ....But which object exactly? Beezus turned her head at the person beside her, West, and well, spoke a proposition, "Want to practice together? I can throw something at you and you throw something back at me and we try to slow or stop it at the same time?"
Now she had to slow something down... what should she through on the floor? Books could get ruined... so could her glasses. She thought about it for a moment and then decided on a text book. She held her book above her head and took her wand in her right hand. She threw her book up, yet was so busy focusing on tossing the book up she forgot about the spell itself. She picked up the book after it fell loudly to the ground.
Time to try again. “Arresto Momentum” she said, waving her wand., but this time she forgot to toss the book.. THERE WERE TOO MANY THINGS TO CONCENTRATE ON! She took a breath and tried again, this time managing to toss the book up in the air and do the spell, yet alas the spell was done too late, so by the time she casted it the book was on the floor.
Feeling frustrated she decided to take a break for a moment and review all the steps in her mind. She thought of it over and over and finally she got up. She was ready. She took out her wand and selected the book. She tossed the book in the air, casted Arresto Momentum, thinking of the book slowing down and behold it did. It was probably just luck, yet Sarah needed little excuse to carry on.

Okaay. They were going to actually do stuff now. That was a lot further down Clement's street. He learnt a lot more by actually doing stuff. Which was a good thing really. In a way. Unless the teachers didn't do practical lessons. But charms was practical today clearly, so Clement was a very happy seventh year. Okaay. The first thing he needed to do was practice the incantation. That didn't seem too bad actually. Clement hoped he would be able to say it, considering that he was among the oldest students in the room. So it would be pretty embarrassing if he couldn't actually say the spell.
He would just start with doing it slowly. "AH-REST-oh - mo-MENT-um" He murmured slowly, thinking that he looked a little stupid to be honest. But he could say the spell. So that was the best thing really. He wasn't going to look overly stupid when he couldn't say the spell. "Arresto Momentum" He mused a few seconds later. Okay. that was enough practicing right?

Now it was time to throw the thing AGAIN.. this time making it stop. Sarah was wider this time so she spent some time reviewing it in her head. Throw –cast-think.... There were sooo many things to concentrate on. She decided to break it up. First she began tossing the book up in the air, and catching it before throwing it up again. She let that fall into rhythm before reaching for her wand. She took a deep breath and when she tossed the book up again, she casted “Aresto Momentum” thinking of the book halting. And it did, yet not by magic, but rather by Sarah’s hand. Her hand was so used to catching the book by now, it leapt forward and caught it.
Charms really did require a lot of concentration and Sarah was eager to prove herself that she can control her mind. She through the book up again and said “Aresto Momentum”, giving her wand a wave. She thought of the book slamming to a halt as she closed her eyes concentrating on that image. Behold, hen she opened her eyes her book had stopped in mid air! She had done it! She scooped up the book and began to practice the spell again, slowing down and stopping the books.
This class was so dull and if this Professor was going to use the same gimmick over and over again to impress people it was going to get downright tedious. S'not like throwing chalk at someone's head was impressive anyway...more irritating then anything else. And Theo was definitely the wrong person to throw chalk at, fyi.
Anyway, with a new list of things to do at least that meant Ascanius wouldn't really have to pay attention to the ugly faced Professor anymore. S'just his own little corner and his own little experiments with the spell.
Not wasting any time, he drew out his wand and mumbled, "Arresto Momentum." The fifth year made sure he took the time to emphasis the middle syllable of each of the three syllables words just like the board said. It seemed good enough. Though he said it one more time for affect, "Arresto Momentum."
When he felt satisfied with that, he drew out his wand and practiced waving it a few times. Seemed solid enough.

Practicing the incantation first! That at least, should be no problem. And so Adi began. "Ah-Rest-oh Monu- No, no! That's not it! Ah- resh- not that either!'' He squinted at the board. "Okay let's go again. Ah-REST-oh. Mo-MENT-um!'' Yay! He got it!
"Ah-REST-oh. Mo-MENT-um! Ah-REST-oh. Mo-MENT-um! Arresto Momentum! Arresto Momentum! Arresto Momentum!'' Great! Now came the harder part but he'd get it sooner or later too.

More note taking and doodling was happening and Ella was pretty pleased with Professor-face so far. Not just cause his face was lovely but because she enjoyed his teaching style. Not that it hurt that he was nice to look at. When notes were done, she placed her quill down and got ready to practice.
Incantation first, yeah? That seemed to be the standard way of practicing. " Ah-REST-oh Mo-MENT-um... Ah-REST-oh... Mo-MENT-um." Nailed it. Plus she'd used it before during Herbology so she was familiar and everything. Next she picked up her quill and practiced the wand movement a few times. ..."Arresto Momentum." Yup, got it.
With that done, she'd need to find an object to slow down and stop. Hm. Did the Professor have anymore apples or? OH! She probably had gummy worms in her bag. Yeah, those would work perfectly. Mental high-fives for that.
