The beginning of a new term is finally here and the cool September air is lightly rolling in through the windows cracked open on the south side of the classroom. The classroom is set up quite normally, with several rows of desks, split into three columns for easy access to the front of the room. In the front of the room is a standard chalkboard with a slightly taller than normal wooden table a few feet in front of it. To the left is the professor's desk.
At that desk sits the new Charms Professor, Pierson Fuller, his feet comfortably propped up on his desk as he finishes his post-breakfast apple and watches the students file in for Charms class.
Say hello if you wish, but class will begin shortly!
OOC: Class has begun! If you are late, please don't announce it. Just pretend you've been here all along!

Sophie sort of jumped as the professor loudly proclaimed the name of the charm. Merlin, he was an excitable man, wasn't he? Except when he was lounged back in his seat eating an apple like in the beginning of class...
So Sophie had been right after all! She just hadn't known the name of the charm. She'd said to stop it in its tracks or freeze it, which was basically what this charm did. She really needed to learn her charm names.
Anyway...
"Oh," Sophie said, raising her hand. "Isn't it used in Quidditch to slow the speed of the Quaffle?" She might only be a first year, but she was a Greingoth, and all Greingoths knew their Quidditch. She never really understood why some people wanted to slow the Quaffle, but she guessed it was to keep less accidents from happening.

Arresto Momentum. She knew that spell. It would slow objects down right? Not nearly as exciting as blowing them to smithereens but whatevs. She had never personally used the spell, and she was thinking hard about where she knew that spell from. The professor had even told them to think History. Maybe she should pay ore attention to History of Magic? Think Hannah, think.
Oh, oh, oh. "Didn't somebody use that to stop a player from falling off a broomstick during a Quidditch match?" It didn't matter that the exact names weren't coming to her right? Ok well it didn't exactly stop him from falling but it slowed and softened the fall.
Arresto Momentum....ah, the good old charm that can be used to slow the movement of an object... Logan thought. He can't really say that he has used it before, but thinking of when it has been used? Gott, he wants to make us think this early doesn't he? Logan ruffles his hair thinking before just shrugging and raising his hand thinking he knew of an answer. "That charm is probably used in Quidditch to slow down the quaffle...I think. I really don't know much about Quidditch. I just like watching it."
Nigel was a little bored. Hypothetical Situations were always fun. But this one was a tad extreme. But it was interesting. Even the floating lights in his face only surprised for a second. Then turned into a distraction. Now this question was just to easy to even warrant an response. If you played Quidditch you knew Arresto Momentum.
It made being a Chaser a lot easier then it use to be. That was for sure.
Nigel began to miss Foxy Knoxy for some reason. Maybe had to do with how hot she was. Probably was that. now where were they going with Arresto Momentum. That is the more important question

Kalla pursed her lips and shook her head. The shield spells were CHARMS. That did not mean they could ONLY use them in Defense class. Raising her hand she said, "I doubt we'll learn anything other than breathing techniques in Defense Against the Dark Arts... but Arresto Momentum was most famously used to slow or stop Harry Potter from falling during a quidditch match. Albus Dumbledore used it. " And before she pointed out that was should likely be taught in History of Magic and not CHARMS she snapped her mouth shut and pursed her lips.
Still sitting in the classroom the third year old listened to what the others were telling and made even a few notes, you never knew if she could use them later...
Okay, the teacher asked a next question but... she didn't felt like answering this time, she was more curious about what the others were doing or saying, so she just listened and watched the others and even made some more notes...
Well. This was also a valuable lesson for the Professor. Never use a hypothetical situation ever again. He had listened to all of their responses and understood where most of them came from. Pierson was nodding and slowly making his way back to the front of the room.
There were a few answers that he needed to comment on specifically as they came up.
"Levitating the object away would be wise, although Mobiliarbus is a charm specifically for levitating plants and trees, so unless you knew for a fact that the object was a plant, unfortunately, this spell would be useless."
"Hypothetically, yes. You could disapparate from the spot if you weren't at Hogwarts." But he wouldn't be teaching that. Couldn't, actually, since he wasn't a certified instructor for that. Anyway.
This was a creative out-of-the-box answer. Pierson had to think about that one. "Ventus. It could work, but you would have to know the strength of your magical ability and the force and speed of the object. If you were strong enough, I suppose you could create a force of wind large enough to blow it away. Interesting thought." From a Ravenclaw, no doubt.
"Okay, very good. Some of you suggested shield spells, which would work quite well. However, that is something you will learn in Defense Against the Dark Arts, I'm sure, though that doesn't make you any less right. Well done.
"Others suggested hexes, curses and jinxes, such as the blasting curse, expulso, reducto, et cetera. While those would succeed in obliterating said object, I would be worried about remnants of the explosion flying back and hitting me. The Impediment Jinx would work, temporarily of course, yes. But those are also things you might learn in Defense class, rather than Charms.
"Some of you brought up the feather weight charm, the cushioning charm, or merely slowing the object down. However... you would still get hit in the face. Good thinking, though.
"Then of course, a couple decided the classic stop-drop-and-roll method would do you good. You could try, but I would be afraid of damaging my broken body even further. That's up to you, though.
"And then, of course, some of you simply thought WAY too hard. Mostly Ravenclaws, I might add with no surprise. It was hypothetical. Don't over think. And to clear something up, a broken neck doesn't always mean full paralysis. And you can still speak with cracked vertebra, but this is not Anatomy class, so let's move on."
Although pleased with the answers he got, the professor was actually mildly surprised that only a few students had mentioned the charm that he was actually looking for. And when the first student said it, he nearly jumped for joy. But... Pierson Fuller didn't jump for anything, so...
"Arresto Momentum!" The Charms professor repeated in a louder voice for the class to hear. He picked up a piece of chalk and wrote it on the board in big letters before turning back around to face the class. "Arresto Momentum... Simple, but sometimes tricky depending on your intentions. Someone tell me where they have seen this spell or heard of it being used before. Think History... Or, has anyone in here used it before? If so, for what?"
OOC: PS: I know HP books say Arresto Momentum merely slows the target down. HP movies demonstrate it as stopping objects completely and I am going for BOTH, so just roll with me. As far as your answer goes, think book uses and movie uses of the spell. Or just make something up!
Sarah listended carefully and took notes.. leaning over her legs to take notes at her desk. It was uncomfortable, yet she was stretching as well.. so it had to be good for her. Or maybe it felt good because of the sheer feeling of rebbellion, sitting ow her parents would never let her sit. She raised her hand. "When Harry Potter fell off his broom upon fainting at the sight of demontors, the Headmaster at the time, the great Albus Dumbledore used this charm to save Harry from the impact of reaching the ground. His broomstick was not very lucky and landed up in the Whomping Willow, Alexa's favourite place'. May the broom rest in pieces" She just like to joke around. She shifted her notes to her lap and she sat cross legged. "By the way Professor, sorry for going off topic.. yet is there a spell to record sounds and play them back later? I am an auditory learner so learning for OWLs would be simpler if I had that" That was off topic.. yet she needed to get it out. Later she would forget and all
Even though Charlie hadn't spoken, she was willing to bet that the ideas she'd had floating around her head were up there in the way over the top, last case scenario "Ravenclaw" thoughts. Proving that she was more of a Ravenclaw that she knew, or at least admitted to herself.
Arresto Momentum. Raising her hand timidly into the air, Charlie offered an answer. "I think -" you know, don't quote her on it "- that the charm was invented due to a Quidditch annoyance? Wasn't it first used to slower Quaffles down, in order that Chasers could retrieve it more easily?"
Not that she really had much of a clue when it came to Quidditch, however. Or whether that was relative to the lesson. "It was also used during Harry Potters third year, when the Dementors approached the Quidditch Pitch, by Professor Dumbledore."

His gaze immediately went to Zahra as it always did when she entered the room. It couldn't be helped really because she was always doing something crazy and today was no exception.
Michael snorted with laughter at her chicken dance and it continued as she almost knocked someone's head off their shoulders with her elbow. It wasn't until he noticed her change in demeanour did he sit up straight in his chair and followed her gaze.
It was that same boy from the train station. Michael looked back at his BFF and realised that the look she was wearing was the same one he wore when he was with Alexa.
By the time she sat down beside him, Mikey's expression had gone from one of surprise to one of amusement. And her comment fell on deaf ears. This was too good an opportunity. "You've got a crush on the Slytherin Prefect."
He was never going to let her live this down. BWAHAHAHAHA!!!
"Know how I'm going to top my entrance next class, Toussaint? I'm going to start with punching you in the head."
Which she actually tried to do NOW since... he was a SO ridiculous. ZAHRA DID NOT. She missed with her fist, mostly on purpose, but she was SO GOING TO PUNCH HIM IN THE HEAD LATER...

"I'm going to punch that girl in the head, too. She's rude," Zahra told Mikey. Maybe she was just grumpy. But Professor Old So and So was NICE and LIKED her and THAT Gryffindor was the know-it-all-bossy-pants sort that no one liked.

Alright this class was getting more interesting. He was learning a lot and even when the professor was going over the answers, he made a few notes about what the professor was saying. Some of it was useful but some of the times Kace did not know the spell that was mentioned so he copied it down in detail.
Then his ears perked up when the Professor mentioned Aresto Momentum. Kace had heard of that spell before. His grandma used it before on his cousins! Kace raised his hand and said, "Professor i know that spell! My grandma used it to stop my cousins from running away from her when they knew they were in trouble." He thought the spell was cool but he wouldn't want that spell preformed on him anytime soon.

Tag had no idea when Arresto Momentum was used. So, rather than answering and making a fool of himself he sat quietly in his desk. As well, so far, Tag liked this guy, and this class. He seemed relaxed and chill, Professor Fuller, so that put the little boy at ease. And once the Professor got a good round up of the answers, and whatever he would right on the chalkboard Tag would simply scribble it into his notes.

Arresto Momentum. Nerida knew that spell, she giggled remembering her brother. It would slow an object down right or did it stop it? Hehe maybe shed get lucky and the spell would be on her newts. That would be awesome!! She had never personally used the spell, but she remembered seeing her grandfather use the spell.
"My grandfather had to use that spell when my brother accidentally fell off his broom when my other siblings hit a bludger at him...He still hasn't lived it down. I think it stopped him not completely but slowed him down enough so he gently landed on the ground."

Jake got a small smile from Ella because that was good thinking and he'd been right. She scribbled down some of the other facts that Professor Handsome-face was saying and then sat back, trying to think of instances where she knew this particular spell had been used. Quidditch was one of the first to come to mind though that had already been said several times. Hmm.
And that little Gryffindor, the blonde one, she was LOUD. The badger wondered if she knew she was talking that loud or if she was simply extremely excited about everything. It was certainly amusing and hard on her ears. Mhm.
Anyway..."We've used the spell in Herbology, Professor. When trying to harvest pods and make sure they don't hit the ground too hard."
A handy spell but not one she concerned herself with, given her BEATER status and all. Still, thanks to Quidditch Through the Ages she knew a little on the subject and raised her hand, not that she waited for permission to go ahead and talk. The hand-raising was really just a warning.
"It was created by this lady who wanted to shut complaining chasers up. It slooows and stops the Quaffle right down so it's easier to catch."
Taylor wrote down what he said then smiled. Tay thought about the spell. There seemed to be something familiar about it... She tilted her head and thought about the professor's question and then bit her lip, thinking. Taylor pondered it and tried to pull something out of the back of her mind. Tay twisted a curl while thinking. She raised her hand, "Professor... isn't it used on quaffles so that it would easier on the chasers?"
Arresto Momentum. Cutty felt that was important enough to have written it down on his notes in his handwriting most terrible. He knew, from his experiences watching Harpies games that there was use of this spell, but he wasn't sure what sort of historical context Professor Fuller was looking for. He certainly hadn't used it before himself. His mother had, but not he himself.
Cutty decided to refrain from taking on this question, but he did listen to what others had to say for curiousity's sake.

Then some witch veered off topic for her own sake and Cutty's brows furrowed in annoyance. "Ahehh!" And, he was about to spit something about getting her answers on her own time, but some tiny girl about his age had spoken up volunteering to chuck another kid out of the window.
"Do it! Do it!" He stood up and shouted excitedly the annoyed scowl now wiped clean off his face, but replaced by something looking more like rapacity. Oh, he had to see this! What a fun class this was turning out to be.

"HAHAHAHAHA!!" Now she really was embarrassing herself. She wouldn't be able to hurt a fly. Mikey continued to laugh and almost fell off his chair, he was laughing so much. "you keep looking at the Prefect like that and his girlfriend will be punching you in the head." He had no idea if the guy had a girlfriend or not but he just thought he'd say that.
His gaze went to the girl that Zahra was talking about and he let out a snort. "She's not being rude." He poked her in the arm with his finger. "You just don't like being shown up."
BWAHAHAHA!
She was just killing him today. Her comments had him laughing again and he had to squeeze his sides because he was starting to get a stitch in his side. Like the Professor was going to throw him out the window.
He didn't have an answer for the Professor because he had never used it, he hadn't seen anyone use it, he had heard about it being used years ago but someone had already given that answer. Although he wished they would have learnt this earlier then he could have used the charm when Alexa was throwing things at his face by the Whomping Willow.

Nicola couldn't help but snicker a little bit when the amazingly handsome Professor had told them most of the Ravenclaws were over thinking the situation, but could you blame her? Nope, you have to look at the hypothetical possibilities you are presented with, along with your chances of stopping whatever is coming at you. Honestly though? Common knowledge! But it was alright, Nicola was obviously more than willing to forgive him though! Especially when he had mentioned the first answer she had said suggested, was the answer he was looking for.
A light giggle escaped her lips feeling proud of herself once more. She was very tempted to pat herself on the back once again. But she'd refrain for now. His hotness was continuing on with the lesson, as well as writing down the charm Arrestum Momentum on the board, which gave Nicola a moment to admire his lovely locks on his head.
...
Nicola tilted her head after he done so and was now facing the class again. She then paused when he had asked if any of them knew from history when or who had used this incantation. Now, granted Nicola had been attending this school for almost two years now, but she still didn't entirely have the full knowledge of its' history. Although she did learn something amongst her nosy searches through the Common Room, which caused her to raise her hand.
"Correct me if I am wrong Professor, but I was reading something in an article I had found about one of the Professors who used to teach Charms here some time ago..I think his name was...Filius Flitwick, if I'm saying it correctly..", she paused, "But regardless, since he taught the class here, I would obviously assume that he knew that incantation & most likely taught it to his students as well.."
Did it answer his question? Maybe not fully, but she felt that it was a pretty good & a valid point to make notice of. So that was good enough for her. And that was that.

Penelope didn't much appreciate when those things flew at her face and she had still been somewhat distracted by it when the first question was asked. So she just kept quiet during that one and sorta listened, and soon another question was asked about the Aresto Momentum spell. Right, she knew stuff about it, she was sure she did...but none of it was coming to her right now. So yeah, she was gonna stay quiet on this one too and try to listen. Hopefully it'd jog her memory too.

Uh huh well that depended on where and how you applied the charm when it came to hitting you in the face or not, but West just eyed the professor and waited as he talked. Arresto Momentum? He knew that one. West put his hand up.
"When I was a kid I climbed on the roof and jumped off," Lets not elaborate on why, "And my sister used Arresto Momentum to stop me from dying and stuff." Obviously it had worked. Just saying.

Tobias twirled his quill thoughtfully as he mulled over the professor's question. He was mostly watching the hilarious interaction between two Gryffindors in his year. One of them was the girl who'd fallen off the statue of the humpbacked witch on... one of the floors in this castle. He had to hold back from laughing at their exchange, but it WAS amusing.
Anyway.
Arresto Momentum.
Toby knew it, of course he did. It was in a lot of the Quidditch books he'd read, but people had already used the Quaffle example. It was a pretty simple, but important, spell to know, and that was obvious from the amount of examples that included falling from a great height. There was ONE thing though that made him think.
He raised his hand. "Professor, I don't have an example-" because his parents were non-magic and his grandfather hadn't ever appeared to use to spell since he'd moved in with them... also a lot of the examples he could think of from history had already been said "-but I've always wondered about the Quaffle thing. If the spell stops the quaffle from dropping too quickly, then how come Chasers can still throw it through the air and it doesn't slow down? Because the spell literally arrests momentum, but momentum isn't just downwards." He paused, fiddling with his quill again just for something to do with his hands. "So I guess... does that mean there's a way of specifying what kind of momentum it slows down? Is that where it gets tricky, like you said?"
SPOILER!!: ENCOURAGMENT. THROW MIKEY OUT OF THE WINDOW. DEFENESTRATION!!!!!

Caleb tapped his chin. He'd HEARD of the spell before, certainly, but when could he remember it being used? Hmm. He hadn't seen it used before either, so it was kind of hard for him to think of a good example. After thinking for a LONG time...like a whole minute...he raised his hand.
"Umm, I think they originally used it for Quidditch stuff right? To stop the Quaffle from falling if the chasers stuck and kept dropping it," he said with a shrug. Made sense. Especially if the team was really BAD.

That spell actually sounded really familiar despite her brain trying to convince her that she had no idea what it was. Finally, Ella mentioned that Herbology lesson they had and it all got super clear. She DID know that charm...but how had already been mentioned. There was no point in repeating really so she got more comfy in her seat and waited for something else to happen while watching on in amusement at that Zahra girl and Michael.
Still...being thrown through a window and testing the spell...wasn't a half bad idea...depending on who'd be practising the spell. No idiots allowed. Unless of course you didn't value your face.
They weren't all that really high up. She imagined there would have been a chance of living...and a chance of annoying the Healer but that was all just extra details she would leave to the Ravenclaws.
Now then. Were the taking turns going through the window? If so, she voted to go second. Laura Hyde would need to be shoved helped through the window first. Just saying.

Aresto Momentum.. Petra was going to have to remember that. It could come in handy one day. Petra continued to listen intently to the conversation and output going on around her.
