Where The Practice Pitch
Who Can Attend First Years and those who wish to brush up on their basic flying skills
What to Bring School brooms will be provided for all students to use
Any First Year who brings their own broom will lose 15 house points for breaking the long-standing school rule about First Years not being allowed brooms.
Arguing with Professor Vindictus regarding this rule will result in an automatic detention and possibly losing more points.
Professor Vindictus spent the better part of the morning preparing the Practice Pitch for the first lesson of the year. The green grass was perfectly manicured and the brooms for the lesson were arranged in two perfect rows. He stood between the broom rows with his arms folded while awaiting the arrival of the students.

Jenny was still trying to remember what the professor had said about slowing down. Oh no, she might crash straight into the grass now! Unaware that she did it, she sat up straight a bit, pulling the handle along. The broom suddenly began to slow down and headed upward a bit, narrowly avoiding what could have been a horrible crash.
What a miracle! She survived in one piece...again.

Up. Down. Up. Down. Up. Down.
Kurumi was lucky that she hadn't been able to eat a full breakfast before the lesson because she surely would have lost all of it on the handle of her broom by now. Or worse...all over Professor Vindictus. She could see it now: minus 50 points for throwing up on the world's best Flying professor and making his robes smell like sausage.
Kurumi tried to keep her posture as straight as she could, but the broom was making that nearly impossible. More than once she lunged forward and smacked her stomach on the handle. Her forehead made contact once as well, leaving a red mark where it had come in contact with the wood.
Merlin, was this broom upset about something? Was it mad that she was "cheating" on it with another broom? Not that she could cheat on it considering that she never owned this broom in the first place.
"Look, I can tell you are upset about something," she said looking down at the broom's handle. Holy cricket she was talking to a broom. Once again, all Selina's fault. "But, I would really appreciate it if you would cooperate with me for the duration of this lesson. I'll...trim your bristles or something afterwards."
Suddenly, the broom ceased its upwards and downwards movements and began gliding through the air like an arrow. Her grip around the handle loosened and a small smile crept across her face.
"There, is this really so bad?" she asked. Those around her probably thought that she was losing her mind and talking to an imaginary person.
She leaned forward again, picking up speed, and began doing some very lose corkscrews through the air. Nothing too fancy or tight, just enough to help her get acquainted with her borrowed broom.

She should move now right..? they couldn't stay in one spot.. but she didn't want to. Looking down she got that weird butterfly feeling in her stomach. She just wanted to get off of this death trap. Reluctantly she leaned forward only slightly but the broom shot foward. Desiree let out a gasp and tried to regain control of the speeding broom. She was going to hit something or worst someone.
The broom wouldn't let up and she tried to maneuver around the other students but failed and the broom sped towards the ground. She let out a scream as her broom hit the ground and sent her flying. She landed with a thud and slowly got up still in shock, a few scrapes forming on her arms and legs. It wasn't a broken arm, but it still proved her point these things are dangerous, hmph.
Janice leaned forwards a little bit, and her broom drive her front. She tried right and left until she get the hang of it. Then, she circled the stadium twice, and pulled her broomstick handle gently. Brake, she thought. And it did.

Up was done! Ashley had gotten his broom to cooperate, and together they had totally kicked up's butt. Awesome. Now he just had to do something about the whole... going straight forward thing. Otherwise, he was going to end up somewhere he shouldn't have been, and who knew what would happen there. Probably something involving dragons. He couldn't decide if that would be cool or not, but in the meantime, he did decide to just try his best to stick to what they had been told to do. So he was going to have to attempt to turn at some point.
He would go in the direction of the broom handle, he recalled from his mental notes. That meant he just had to tilt the handle in a direction, and then he would turn, yes? He tried it slowly at first, and found that it did, indeed, seem to work that way. With another small surge of confidence, he moved faster, bringing the handle around quickly in an attempt to make a sharper turn.
And... right. Why was he upside down, then? He wasn't supposed to be upside down, right? He had no idea what to do about this situation, because apparently leaning into the broom would make it go faster. It didn't help at all that every instinct in his body was trying to make him just wrap his arms and legs around as tightly as possible. At least he was maintaining a pretty good altitude, though. He didn't want to imagine if this was happening while he was still inches from the ground. What he so very much did want to imagine was being upright again.
Brushing herself off she approached the broom again. She was still terrified, but she wasn't going to give up, she wanted to.. but she was going to try again. I must be crazy. She mounted the broom again. And kicked off. Okay first go forward slowly.. she thought leaning forward on her broom. The broom did what she wanted. Relieved she tried to go a little higher, but only a little. Nothing had happened yet, trying to breath normally she directed her broom flying in a little half cirlce.
You know this could even be kind of fun.. that was until the broom jerked her up suddenly. "Ah!" she squealed and held on tightly trying not to be flung off the back of the broom. Gaining control again she shot an uncertain glance at her broom before she returned to slowly flying in circles.
It felt so good to be back on a broom, but without the pressure of the try-outs. He felt the wind through his hair, his heart was pumping with adrenaline. Almost. If oly he could go faster on this broom. Hugo soared through the air and graciously slowed down pulling the front of his handle up. He now floated about 30 metres above the ground, looking down on people who hadn't become airborne yet. He had to go higher. Hugo mounted his broom so that he would go upwards a bit more and kicked off.

Finally relieved that her broom is under control again, Jenny smiled sheepishly as she gently flew around the field. By instinct, she swerved her broom to her left. Er, why did I do that in the first place? Jenny pondered. Her heart started suddenly beating quickly. Oh no, is my broom going crazy again? No, no, must focus....must keep calm.
Maybe it was time for her to land at once. There weren't that many nice places to land on though....

He stepped away from the broom aisle. "No racing or showing off when you're airborne. I want everyone to practice taking off, flying around and landing," he instructed. "Is that understood?"
Dramatic pause.
"To become airborne, gently push off from the ground with your feet. Gently! If you push too hard, you'll rocket upwards into the sky and be out of control."
Hopefully they understood.

William wasn't even sure that he could grip the broom hard enough to make his knuckles turn white. Regardless, he hoisted his right leg over the thin broomstick and planted his feet firmly on the ground. He felt a strange tingling sensation in his stomach, one he would feel when he would go on Muggle attraction rides. He stood on the ground for a few minutes, attempting to muster up the courage to press off gently from the ground. He closed his eyes, squeezed the broom handle, and pushed his feet into the ground– but then there was no ground for his feet to press. He opened his eyes and realized he was hovering a few inches above the ground. He exhaled loudly with relief and angled himself a bit higher before pushing forward on his broom. He swiftly rose several feet into the air and he pulled back to prevent himself from going any higher.
"Wow!" he exclaimed, feeling a rush of excitement that was once nervousness in his midsection.

Desiree was actually flying.. without fainting or falling off or anything. She wasn't quite as scared anymore, but that didn't mean she liked it any better. It was going to take a lot more than one lesson to make her like flying. Feeling like she had had enough, she figured it was time to try to land. Actually landing, not flying off the end of her broom.
She took one last deep breath, and slowly brought the broom down. To her surprise it actually worked and the broom started descending. As they neared the ground she feared the worst and she quickly covered her face with her hands, shielding it. Suddenly she felt her feet touch down and moving her hands from her face she saw she was sitting safely on the ground. Dismounting her broom a small smile was forming on her face.

After a while, Jenny finally spotted a nice patch of grass near the edge of the field. Brilliant! And yet...her broom caused another problem: it swerved to the right, the opposite direction of her destination. What?!
Jenny quickly pulled the handle to the left. Woosh! Her broom became fast as a tornado. Time to slow down...no, she needed to slow down again!
Slowly (so that she wouldn't almost risk doing another backflip again), Jenny raised her body up and her broom just gently descended into the patch of grass. Just when she was about to land it, it hovered above the patch...and stayed there.
Come on! Jenny kept urging her broom to land, but her broom only descended about an inch or two.
Harlow looked up at the sky and watched everyone flying around her. "Oh it all looks so easy from up there," she muttered sitting up and rubbing a spot on her forehead that was starting to throb a bit.
She stood up and retrieved the broom. Harlow swung her leg over the broom and took a few more deep breaths. "You can do this." she told herself.
Harlow pushed off her tip toes and lifted into the air. She kept her eyes open the time and a death grip on the handle of her broom. "Ok. Now go," she told the broom.

Jez looked down at her broom and gulped. She didn't trust this stick one bit. When her older brother Keegan was there to help her, she was fine with flying. But doing it on her own ... that was scary. Really scary.
Not to mention the last time she'd been on a broom, she'd had a very nasty accident.
Jez took a deep breath, and gently pushed off from the ground. It went about a metre up into the air before she lost her nerve and came back down again.
Ashley watched the ground moving under his head. Once he'd gotten over the initial panic of being upside down, he actually found it kind of fun. Maybe one day he'd do this on purpose. Right now he figured he should be concentrating on working out how to get upright again. At least he was still going in wide circles, so he felt a little better about that. He had conquered up. Now he'd conquered around. Right side up was giving him problems, but he was cool with it. At least... until he realized he was at an angle again, and was heading for the ground. That... that was not cool.
Being upside down, he was a little disoriented on which way he was supposed to move to do certain things, and so he pulled at the handle, hoping it would lead to going back up. Of course, it didn't, but it did slow him down a bit. Once he got close enough to the ground that he thought he wouldn't break anything, he just let go, dropping to the ground and curling up.
He stayed that way for a moment he felt brave enough to unfurl and check for damages. Scratches, sure. Bruises, definitely. But all bones seemed to still be doing what they were supposed to be doing. Reassured of that, he just flattened out on his back and lay there, catching his breath. Once he'd done that, he'd go find his broom.
After reading, Classes and alot of homework she was glad she could d
fly rapidly on the pitch well perfectly
Luna hopped on to her new broom and grinned she kicked off the ground and went up and started flying when she up high enough she looked down everyone looked like ants weird... Then she watched the first years they were pretty good if it was there first time
Napoleon of Crime - Gryffinclaw - ❄ Lunar Library Lurker ❄ - Owl Emissary - Pirate Auror
Ok so no showing off or dealing with obstacles....yet.
That meant a lot of simply flying and Gideon guess he'd have to make the most of it to give the professor what he wanted. Not that the Gryffindor minded as he quite enjoyed flying but there were still his fellow students around to be ever conscious of as he was moving.
Speaking of which he was soon passed by a quickly speeding Kurumi who looked like she might be having trouble. Gideon leaned a little lower over his broom to fly a bit faster to follow in case help was needed but judging by her actions...or correctly the broom's antics things seemed to have righted themselves and the fourth year pulled back to slow. His broom handle turning in the process causing a slight veer to the left which in turn caused him to compensate to avoid another student coming in for a landing.

Pulling gently on her broom, Kurumi slowed and petted her broom. It was behaving now, so it deserved some love. Keeping her feet in her foot holsters, Kurumi let her arms dangle at her sides just for a few moments to loosen up her shoulders from having held on so tightly to her broom. Now that it was cooperating with her she wasn't feeling too worried about the rest of the lesson. Which was probably a mistake.
Out of the corner of her eye she spotted Gideon nearly collide with another student. EEK! At least he hadn't actually collided with them. She turned her broom's handle towards the right and veered in that direction, making a lazy U-turn. She slowly made her way over towards him and hovered next to him long enough to flash him a quick smile. "No falling off your broom because of me," she giggled softly.
She then pushed down on the handle of her broom and began slowly making her way downwards towards the pitch.

Jez took a deep, calming breath. Okay, this time, she'd get a bit higher up.
'Conquer your fear, Jez,' she thought. 'You can do it.'
She pushed off the ground, and the broom rose into the air, maybe two metres off the ground. Jez leant forwards slightly over the broom handle and it moved forwards a few centimetres. She leant back, and it stopped. She continued to do this until she was safely back on the ground.
Huh. Maybe flying again wasn't going to be too bad.
Hufflepuff where they are just and loyal they are patient, true and unafraid of toil
Penny was delighted to be flying again... she leaned forward onto her broom, to speed up a little and found herself zooming forward, the breeze in her hair..
She saw a few first years, obviously petrified, hovering close to the ground - Penny just wanted to soar......but she was also careful not to show off !!!
Ira was a little afraid of flying. That too, on a broomstick!
But seeing others, she gathered courage and caught the broom tightly, scared she would fall off...God! she was still on ground!
Then she remembered about the professor telling not to hold it too tight. She focused on his instructions and taking a deep breath, gently pushed off the ground...
Jesifur was nervous but excited, just lift your feet and gently push off the ground. Sounded like some joke her cousin told her once. Summoning the courage she pushed off the ground with her toes and kept the broom steady. She was shocked to find herself hovering a few feet off the ground. Ok, so maybe this wasn't exactly like that joke her cousin pulled.
Jesifur felt steady enough and push the handle of the broom in the direction that seemed most clear of other students and moved forward. She was going slow to start. she flew from the starting point to one end of the pitch and back. On her way back to the starting point she nearly missed running into another student, lost her balance and did a somersaulting dismount of her broom landing directly on her feet, broom firmly held in her left hand. She laughed because it must have looked funny and she was relieved she was unhurt.
THIS was why Selina lover flying basics. Although she was one of the more advanced flyers on the Pitch, the fact that she just had to fly and got class credit was amazing. Nothing was more exhilarating than just taking off and going for a ride. She she kogged along the pitch and hoped on her broom and took off in the air.
Vindictus said no showing off so she would take it all nice and slow. She held onto the handle of her broom and sat upright to keep her pace steady and soothing. Maybe if Vinditus wasn't looking she would try later to go fast, but baby steps. She did not want to lose points for doing anything out of line.
Then her eye caught a familiar figure in the air. Kurumi. She waved at the girl and continued to fly around.
