Where The Practice Pitch
Who Can Attend First Years and those who wish to brush up on their basic flying skills
What to Bring School brooms will be provided for all students to use
Any First Year who brings their own broom will lose 15 house points for breaking the long-standing school rule about First Years not being allowed brooms.
Arguing with Professor Vindictus regarding this rule will result in an automatic detention and possibly losing more points.
Professor Vindictus spent the better part of the morning preparing the Practice Pitch for the first lesson of the year. The green grass was perfectly manicured and the brooms for the lesson were arranged in two perfect rows. He stood between the broom rows with his arms folded while awaiting the arrival of the students.

He was thinking how to get this spider off his back he looked behind him and flew through some more web which slowed him down, the spider swung its leg towards him but luckily only got his broom which spun his broom out of control towards the ground again.
After some time he again got control of the broom and flew away from the spider. That was the second close call that he had from the spider and he didnt want another so he flew away from the spider.
But the spider was intent on getting him and wouldnt get off his back so Harvey zigging and zagging trying avoid his legs while getting the web blobs off him, then he suddenly saw the goal posts and an idea came to him he sped towards them with the spider hot on his broom.
He flew through one of the hoops and off in another direction he looked behind him just in to see the spider crash into the hoop that Harvey went through. He didnt want the spider to know where he was so he went away and higher out of his view.
Damn what a first year this was turning out to be, frought with danger, studies and homework. But it was fun he wouldnt change it for the world.
"On my whistle, I want you to take off and fly around the pitch. I won't tell you when the, ahem, object is going to appear - when you see it, you must react," explained Professor Vindictus. "Don't worry about falling off your brooms - once everyone is airborne, I'll use one of my special cushioning charms that acts like a massive trampoline."
He looked at them and brought the whistle up to his lips.
So, they wouldn't be plummeting to their deaths for this class--that was good to know, Violet thought to herself. She doggedly kicked off from the ground again on her broom--let's get this over with. This time she rose in the air with no major problems (other than her stomach moving up into her throat somewhere around 20 feet or so). She leaned slightly forward and began moving forward at a good (for her) speed (that is, not too fast!). When she reached the corner of the pitch, she carefully nudged her boom handle to the right and felt herself veering gently to the right. She repeated the movement at the next corner and found herself rounding it and moving smoothly forward down to the other end of the pitch.
Great! She was getting the hang of it! (As long as she never had to turn to the left, she was all set...)

As Cora was swerving and heading for the ground, she did not know what to do. She clamped her eyes shut, preparing for the worst. She could hear cries all around her, for help and assistance. Cora wished she could help them, but she was kind of in need of help at the moment too.
The only problem was, Cora could not yell out. She just COULDN'T. SO she was heading for the ground, to her possible doom. She remembered someone mentioning a spell so that no one would fall and get hurt, but that didn't calm her.
She heard someone say, "Grab my hand." It sounded like that girl who had helped Cora in Charms. Cora opened her eyes, thinking that it was for her, and was SHOCKED.
She noticed that girl wasn't trying to help HER, but Cora was somehow not plummeting to her doom anymore. Had someone helped? She could just remember feeling a prickly thing brush up against her on her way down. She had assumed this was a bush. Wait a second!! WHY WOULD THERE BE A BUSH?!
Had that, THING, saved her?! Cora was extremely confused.
Then she looked over at the giant spider. If she thought about it, it wasn't so scary after all. She kind of felt sorry for it.
The spider was stuck in between so many students who were running from it, frightened. Was it actually TRYING to hurt anyone? Cora couldn't be sure. What she WAS sure of, though, was that the spider clearly wanted to be here just as much as some of the fleeing students.
It suddenly didn't seem scary to her.
Cora then did something that may or may not have been considered stupid. She started slowly approaching the spider, a mixture of curiosity and sympathy leading her towards dangerous territory.
The more Cora looked at the giant spider, the more she thought it looked like some poor terrified misunderstood creature. Although students were falling off their brooms everywhere, Cora couldn't help but feel bad for it.
She couldn't think of anything that would fix this. She continued slowly towards the poor spider, wondering if there was any sort of spell to free the spider or put it out of harm's way.
The fact that it was chasing children didn't concern her. It's not his fault, she insisted.
As Cora got closer, though, she realized she was definitely not experienced enough for something like this. She didn't even know many spells yet, and she had heard someone get reprimanded for using a wand.
She attempted to repair a bit of the web with her hands, but seeing as this was impossible, headed closer to the spider, staring at it as if in a trance.
Cora paused as she observed the spider notice her approach. As it turned towards her, Cora knew this was not the right place to be right now. She thought if she could JUST comfort it, or JUST calm it, everything would be fine.
CORA WAS SERIOUSLY IN OVER HER HEAD NOW, THOUGH. And not just literally, because Cora was probably the absolute smallest girl here.
But Cora was always one to see the absolute best in people, and could not see the danger. As she was close enough to almost touch the spider, she swallowed hard. She stared with wide eyes, her plan already seeming ridiculously stupid. WHAT NOW??!!
Nicki continued to pull at the web while keeping an eye out for the spider. She saw the spider notice Alyssa and go after her. She was relieved that Alyssa had noticed and was able to avoid it by flying away. She was surprised when she saw Alyssa fly back to the web and continue to pull at it. "She's one brave and loyal person," Nicki thought to herself.
Determined that she would also work hard at rescuing the other students, Nicki pulled on another piece of the web.
"Whoaa!!!" Violet jerked her broom handle sharply to the right at the sight of the huge spider that had suddenly appeared in mid-air. This caused her broom to jerk violently, too, and she was thrown off one side. But she had a death-grip on the handle, so she found herself hanging in mid-air, dangling with her left leg still swung over the side and clutching the handle of her broomstick as her broom slowed to a stop. She felt incredibly foolish.
But, the important thing was, she had avoided the spider! Slowly she managed to pull herself back onto her broomstick (all those chin-ups on the tree in the back garden paid off!) Then she gently swung the broom around again in a slow circle to the right and sat looking at the giant spider for a few minutes.
Acromantula!! she thought she heard one student cry out. If that were really true, she would be willing to brave approaching it again just to get a little of the venom--so useful in potions! (and so darned expensive!) But she knew the professor would never risk their safety by using a real Acromantula--this was just some sort of conjuration, she was sure.

Cael couldn't help it. When the spider burst from the Professor's wand he started shrieking with laughter. The poor thing was flying around with its legs scrambling for purchase on the air as if it couldn't understand why it was flying either.
Doubling over with tears in his eyes, he laughed even harder when all of the girls closest to him scattered like bugs, screaming in abject terror. Using some quick reflexes, he actually had to start dodging the girls and the spider hadn't even floated his way yet...

The broom immediately flew forward and downwards bringing her closer to the web. When she reached one corner of the web, she leaned back and pulled back slowly on the handle until the broom slowed down and hovered next to the web.
Alyssa started pulling at it, keeping an eye out for the spider who seemed to be preoccupied with the students trapped in its web. "If we keep pulling at the corners holding the web up, it'll eventually fall and hopefully the students will be able to crawl out," Alyssa yelled out to Jenny.

As she hovered near the opposite corner of the web where Alyssa and Jenny were working, she started working on pulling at the web, tearing it from it's hold.
Jenny was gently trying to pull the corner of the web from its hold (which was very hard to do with all the sticky stuff) when another girl suddenly zoomed in to help her. "Ah yes, that's what I'm trying to do." Jenny told the person next to her. Just then, her finger got stuck in the web...again. Good thing it was only stuck on the outer edge. She quickly pulled it off, silently thanking someone her finger didn't break off in the process.
Five minutes passed before Jenny was finally able to pull the sticky threads off. Whew! Should she keep doing this? Apparently yes, since there were a lot more of those sticky thin threads...but they were sticky.
Jenny zoomed off to see if that girl needed some help at the other corner as well. They haven't introduced themselves yet, probably.
Looping and twirling to avoid the shrieking females, he smiled as he started to fly toward the spider, which was more than he could say for the others. Some of the Gryffindors were even a bit wary and weren't they supposed to be the brave ones? He laughed as he ducked under its hairy belly and dangling legs, skimming close enough that it almost touched him. Pulling up in a tight vertical ascension, he waited until the spider floated back his way. He grinned when it started chasing one of the terrified students.
Kennedy smirked as he successfully dodged the spider's legs once again. He was taking a liking to being up in the air instead of the ground. The only problem was the spider. Right about now he wished his mom was here. She would so use the broom to kill the spider instead. He laughed at that thought.
O_________O
The his broom jerked so badly that it almost threw him off. What was going on? Well, he didn't do it. He looked back and found a blob of spider web at the end of his broom.
That was not good.
The broom began to wobble uncontrollably, causing Kennedy to panic. He tried to steer the broom up, but it was going down. Gah! He was going to die and at a such a young age. He didn't even get to taste one of those chocolate frogs everyone talks about. Then.... SPLAT!
Kennedy had tried to control the broom, but fell flat on the ground. Good thing it was charmed or he could have injured himself, but still it hurt.

Minerva was flying around watching the spider go after everyone else. She was happy she had only had one in counter with it so far. She was trying to still get the hang of her broom. Then she noticed she didn't see the spider anymore. Where did that stupid thing go? Minerva started looking around, but couldn't find it. Before she could turn her broom she was it from behind by something. "AHHH" she let out a shriek and fell off her broom. She freaked out for a second when she saw the ground coming fast, but then she remember something the professor said. "Spell so it would be like a trampoline" She put a smile on her face and waited for the hit. She all of the sudden was bouncing on air. She got to her feet, back on her broom and took off again.

Not only because of the spider flying closer towards her but also because of the shame ! It would be a shame if she won't get herself out of the web and fell on the cushions far below for she is a Quidditch player and if she was one then she knows how to maneuver a broom. But with what she is showing now, her Quidditch career is already in ruins before she even knew it started.
Or maybe not. Someone flew towards her, possibly to help. And it was the Gryffindor Prefect ! Thank Merlin ! But hurry... She quickly grabbed the Prefect's hand as she had instructed her to do without even saying a single word. You don't expect her to talk when the spider was almost only four feet away ? Beezus held on firmly to her arm, her other hand pulling her broom from the nasty web. It was impossible to get it, it was stuck ! And the spider was closer now. She pulled, tugged, grabbed and at last ! GOT IT !
As the first year grabbed onto her hand and pulled. Kurumi lunged forward a bit, not expecting the Ravenclaw to pack so much strength in those small arms of her. Once again, expect the unexpected, especially in Flying class. Adjusting her on grip around the girl's hand Kurumi leaned back on her broom to try and gain more altitude and speed to make the process of pulling the girl out of the web easier. She could hear the clicking from the GIANT SPIDER OF DOOM getting closer and wanted to reach for her wand - constant vigilance as the Headmaster would say - but remembered Vindictus' warning about no magic.
Honestly, did he actually WANT students to end up in the hospital wing after his lessons? Or was this some twisted way to cause harm to the other houses prior to the Quidditch season? After all, Kurumi didn't see any of the star players from Ravenclaw on the pitch. Suspicious, very suspicious.
There was a small tearing noise and the next thing Kurumi knew she was being propelled backwards on her broom with a free Ravenclaw holding her hand. "Glad that's over," she giggled nervously. "Heading below the web might be the best thing to do, just make sure to be careful as you weave through the web so you don't get stuck again."

Kurumi heard her named being called again and turned her broom around to see Harvey. She blushed a bit, momentarily forgetting that there was a GIANT FLYING SPIDER OF DOOM looming around the pitch. But then, she saw the spider had its sights set on the first year and was about to open her mouth when he noticed it as well and took off in the opposite direction.
Time for her to follow her own advice and fly below the web? She certainly thought so.

"How are you ladies doing over there,"Alyssa yelled over to them. "My name is Alyssa." She continued to keep an eye out for the spider who was still busy chasing the other students that were flying all over the place trying to avoid it. "I think that my end is starting to unravel. Maybe if we can all work on one end, it will 'give' faster and hopefully the students stuck in the middle will be able to roll off down this end," Alyssa suggested. Alyssa kept holding out for the hope that someone else would come to help them. Either that or that the Professor would call off the spider.

Minerva had just gotten back on her broom when she noticed the spider coming at her again. "Good Gravy" She muttered. When was this lesson to be over. She flew forward trying to get away from it. When she realized she wasn't going to be able to out run it, Minerva leaned left and started headed in a different direction. It followed her so she decided to put all fear aside and do a down word spiral towards the "trampoline" bottom. At least if I hit it, it wont kill me like the ground. She was getting close to the ground so she decided to pull up. Her foot scrapped something hard even though she was still not near the ground. Once back up she couldn't believe that she had just done that without falling.
When Eino first saw the spider his eyes widened and is jaw dropped aaaaaaaaaall the way down to the floor. It was the most beautiful and majestic spider he had ever seen... AND IT FLIED!!! Unlike everyone else Eino did not fly away from the giant flying spider, instead he flew towards it. He wanted to see it up close, maybe even pet it, see what its wings were made of, what kind of spider it was, and if he could own one. He bent forward and steered the broomstick in the spider's direction, but the creature was flying away. "Waaaait!" He shouted as he continued to chase after the spider, but the creature was not interested in him, but rather in scaring the other students. He could barely even approach it. It was too fast and there were too many people flying everything. He felt like a seeker going after a snitch, only the snitch was a giant spider.

Penny kicked away from the ground again.... this time she was going to try and fly with no hands - this was going to be a first time thing for her, as she flew into the air, she decided not to go too high - just in case she fell off the broom..
Making sure to grip her legs tightly around the broom, she let her left hand loosen it's grip, then removing it from the broom entirely...
"OK now for the tough part", she thought, feeling nervous and scared - but being chaser on the house team, meant that a time would probably come when she was going to have to catch the quaffle with two hands instead of the one-handed catch she had been making up until now..
Very slowly, Penny loosened her right-handed grip on the broom, she nudged the broom lower to the ground - hovering just five feet above the grass now...
Then showing more bravery than she felt - Penny removed her right hand from the broom...... and fell off immediately, landing on the grass - her firebolt still hovering where she had fallen off.
Penny was disappointed, she got up off the grass, checked herself making sure she wasn't injured.... looked at the broom and knew what to do next..
Bravely, she got back on the broom, and tried it again - falling off another two times before finally managing to fly with no hands - Now Penny was happy..
Post 7 - anyone else want to help destroy the web of doom?

"Nice to meet you, Nicki. I'm Jenny Takahashi." Then another girl came along and introduced herself as Alyssa. "Nice to meet you, too." Jenny smiled despite all the chaos that was going on around them now. So nice to have a civil conversation at a time like this...
"Oh hey, that's a good idea." Jenny grinned at Alyssa's suggestion. Seriously, why didn't Jenny think of that before? She quickly flew her broom over to Nicki's or Alyssa's (she forgot which girl was who) end and pulled all the strands out quickly, only stopping occasionally to take a breath or two.
Unknown to Jenny, her broom started drifting off from the corner. Jenny was struggling to reach for that one strand when soon, she realized the problem. Ah. Quickly she swerved her broom back to the ends of the web strands and continued her work there.
"Come heeeeeere, come heeeeeere." Eino shouted as he struggled to chase down the spider. For a giant spider that thing could fly fast, or maybe Eino was just too slow to even keep up with a giant and fat spider. How embarrassing. Why was everyone flying away from the creature? It wasn't even scary. Plus, how often did they get to see a giant flying spider? It could even be an acromantula, if only he could approach it to examine it. This was the perfect opportunity for some additional care of magical creatures lessons, which Eino was never willing to pass up. He bent a little lower to go slightly faster, but the spider was not flying in a straight line and there were too many people everywhere, so he straightened his back a little. He was too worried to fly into someone else and cause them both an injury. the spider was flying in all sorts of patters: up and down, circles, zigzags, making it incredibly hard to keep up with it.

Hearing the sounds of movevent and what could only be the pinchers of the giant flying spider, Gideon couldn't help but look behind him. Only to see that the time period described as 'only when he had to,' was now upon him and the creature was coming towards him reacting to his presence.
Great...just great.
Gideon leaned to the opposite direction he had been going in to narrowly avoid one of its legs as it swayed closer to him. But for a large creature moving didn't seem an issue and the fourth year had to move quickly, diving to avoid the spider just in time to be hit by a small glob of sticky subsence on his arm.
The broom didn't budge, after the escape that the wooden stick did for Louisa it just stayed still in the air. "Move you stupid thing!! I mean, yeah, thanks for working our way away from it, but now MOVE!" Not to mention that the spider could be anywhere now.
And it was flying away from someone. Like, for real. Louisa was still clutching her broom's handle as her eyes witnessed the unbelievable..

... the boy did say something but she was too far away to hear. The point was that the boy flew TOWARD the spider - as in the direction of death doom. "Glad someone else not freaking out." Minerva was happy she was getting the hang of the flying, but she was tired of the spider. Can this be done yet? She thought really loud to herself. She was flying around the outline of the pitch when she say the creepy thing coming at her again. "Oh Bother" Really it was coming back. At first she didn't want to move out of its way. She just wanted it to hit her and get it over with, but that wasn't the lesson now was it. So she leaned right and started in a different direction going in a zig zag to confuse it.

While chasing the spider Eino flew right by one of his fellow Ravenclaw friends, who was surprisingly calm. However, he didn't stop until she shouted that it was a rubber spider. Nonsense! It had to be real! Eino wanted it to be real, and maybe fly on it, too. "I do hope it may not be a rubber spider." He replied to her, with a strange surprised look on his face. He really wanted it to be real but by now it didn't matter... While he paused to reply to Louisa the spider continued to fly away, and now it was completely out of reach. If there was a way to approach it faster and without bumping into anyone. Hmmm... it flew right past Louisa and she didn't seem to be escaping it, and it was flying away from Eino, who was chasing it, and towards the scared students, so maybe... He should try to act scared and fly the opposite way! Louisa should help him.

Minerva thought she was away from the spider. She was looking behind her for it and flying forward at the same time. She looked in front of her just in time to see another student coming towards her. She hurried and turned left, but lost her balance and started to fall. Next thing she new "CRASH" she had smacked directly into the spider. Taking both hands and pushing the spider off and away from her she continued free falling until she it the "trampoline" Oh was Minerva so glad the trampoline spell was there. She got up and looked at the professor. "Thank you professor for putting the trampoline spell here. It has been a life savor." She wasn't joking either two bad falls and no broken bones. She owed the professor for that.
