Where The Practice Pitch
Who Can Attend First Years and those who wish to brush up on their basic flying skills
What to Bring School brooms will be provided for all students to use
Any First Year who brings their own broom will lose 15 house points for breaking the long-standing school rule about First Years not being allowed brooms.
Arguing with Professor Vindictus regarding this rule will result in an automatic detention and possibly losing more points.
Professor Vindictus spent the better part of the morning preparing the Practice Pitch for the first lesson of the year. The green grass was perfectly manicured and the brooms for the lesson were arranged in two perfect rows. He stood between the broom rows with his arms folded while awaiting the arrival of the students.

She jumped back up "Never mind professor I guess I found my own way to land. I will try that again." She dusted her self off and felt really dumb. But on a positive side she did seem to be getting the hang of the flying part.
Harvey laughed a little when he saw Minnie's landing, it seemed ever so cute, but at the same time he hoped she didnt get hurt in that landing. Maybe he could instruct her to land properly out of lesson time.
He leisurely flew around the field, he loved flying now that he had gotten the hang of it.

Kourtney hovered in the air, sitting upright on her broom as she watched a few other students. She was going to practice the landing but she decided to simply make a few laps before doing so.
Turning her broom to the right, she leaned forward until she reached a comfortable speed. Flying down the side of the field, she enjoyed the feeling of the air rushing through her curly hair. Wheeee! She was definitely going to have to get one of these and fly when she went home for the summer. Well...at least fly where people wouldn't see her. She couldn't have someone asking too many questions.
For about 10 minutes, she flew around the field, turning left each time as she worked around the corners so she didn't go crashing into the stands. As she flew, she slowly became more comfortable with the movements of the broom, though she was far from being an expert. Each time she came close to another student, she would cringe and experience the urge to hit a brake as though she were in a car.
To remedy that, she rose a little higher in the air to continue flying.
Nate took his broom back over to where Professor Vindictus was standing, observing, and started to descend. As he approached the ground, Nate pulled up slowly and extended his legs. He started slowing down, and felt his feet solidly hit the ground. He wasn't ready for the landing entirely, so he fell down, almost onto his face, but rolled over his shoulder and popped back up to his feet. "Smooth," he said to himself, smiling very happily.

Slowly pushing her broom handle down, Kourtney began to drift down towards the ground. She pulled the handle up suddenly, though not too suddenly, as she noticed her path crossing another flying student. As she didn't trust anyone to swerve around her, she just let them pass before she continued her trip down towards the ground. Nearly there...
Pushing the handle down, and leaning a little forward, she drifted faster until seconds later, she touched down, her feet hitting the ground a little harder than she expected and her knees nearly buckling. Oof. Perhaps she shouldn't have leaned forward so much.
Now she knew. And experience made everyone better.
With a grin at her philosphical thoughts, Kourtney pushed off again from the ground, handle up and body leaning forward to shoot up into the air again to practice again. And again. And again.
Now that the questioning of his expert instructions had ceased, Vindictus continued with the lesson. "A broomstick is easy to navigate in the air - to make the broomstick advance, you lean forwards over the broom handle; the closer you are to the handle, the faster you go. To slow down, sit upright on the broom and pull the handle towards you - if you do this too fast, you'll find yourself somersaulting backwards and crushing my precious grass with your bums," he said and kept a straight face. "You'll fly in whatever direction the broom handle is pointing."
He stepped away from the broom aisle. "No racing or showing off when you're airborne. I want everyone to practice taking off, flying around and landing," he instructed. "Is that understood?"
Dramatic pause.
"To become airborne, gently push off from the ground with your feet. Gently! If you push too hard, you'll rocket upwards into the sky and be out of control."
Hopefully they understood.
"You may all start flying!"

Jayden smirked, glancing around at the students that were eying their brooms as if it were some sort of serpent ready to attack. "UP!" she called out to the broom that lay beside her, smiling as it leaped into her hands. She mounted her broom, and kicked off with her legs, her broom lifting her from the ground; a motion that was very familiar to her since her father taught her to fly at the age of seven.

When Nora thought she had practiced enough the flying part, she decided to practice the landing as well, which was, after all, the most important part. Not exactly sure what to do, she pushed the broom handle down, and watched as it was lowering to the ground. She held the handle up again, when she was afraid that she'll just fall on the ground, but then, again and slowly, she pushed the handle down.
The girl grinned when her feet gently touched the ground, and... there she was. Yay!
But she was kind of enjoying the lesson, so she took off again. Practice more? Yup, until professor Vindictus told them to stop.
This whole straight ahead, few inches off the ground thing wasn't going to work for long. So Ashley figured he would need to eventually either go up or around. Around seemed... complicated. To be honest, so did up, but he had some theories about up. Unfortunately, his broom seemed to have different theories, because he was going to lose those few inches he'd had going for him in a moment. Closing his eyes, he tried a different tactic, which definitely did not work. Thankfully, the broom handle managed to just skim, and didn't dig into the ground, but that was enough to stop the whole production and send him tumbling over the end and onto the ground.
That was definitely not up.
But thankfully, he was going slow enough that it was only his pride that took a beating from the fall, and after a dusting off, he was getting back on to try that whole up thing again.

Had she offended her broom or something? Should she have bowed to it before mounting? She had done that in her first year and the lesson had gone relatively well. Now, it seemed like she was on a broom that was going through broom puberty and refusing to listen to any command she gave it. Either that...or Vindictus had cursed the broom.
She decided to give him the benefit of the doubt on this one.
Maybe her broom just didn't like Gryffindors? Had it been a broom that Slytherins had always ridden on? Maybe it was just moody? Merlin, she was talking about brooms like they were people. She blamed Selina, obviously.
Pulling the handle closer to her still, Kurumi continued to rise up in the air. It seemed like the broom had settled down, which was very good, and she figured that she could try to move herself forwards. She leaned just a bit - not wanting to repeat the sudden burst forward she had in the past - and the broom complied.
However, after flying a few meters forward, the broom began to bounce up and down up and down similar to how small birds will appear to bounce as they fly. "Wooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaoooooooooooaaaaaaaaooooooooooaa aaaaaah," she said as her teeth rattled.
Kurumi had probably flown about 500 meters in this fashion, and the broom was showing no signs of letting up.

"Ahh... fresh air...we have flight ladies and gentlemen!" Jayden said to herself happily. Flying was a fun, exhilarating experience. "If only I didn't have to come back down so soon." Jayden thought to herself, frowning a bit as she admired the scenery from above. Hogwarts truly was a beautiful place.

Fantastic! Raven felt very glad when she knew that she was in two metres above the ground. She wanted to fly higher again. Then Raven controlled the broomstick to go higher.
"Higher, please." whispered her. The broomstick brought her higher. Then she tried to move forward.

After Jenny mounted her broom, she tried to push off her broom and struggled...still. Why? She took this class before; why was she still struggling? She couldn't hate flying anymore; she was used to brooms now.
She kicked again, this time gently, and finally, she hovered about 10 inches off the ground. Pooh.
This was why she never tried out for Quidditch. Ever.
Post 1: getting the broom up. (sorry i'm late...work...playing it like she was there)
HOLISTIC ACTRESS {X O} EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED
India had had a little trouble getting her broom to go "UP" at first. She had a scraped knee, palm, and elbow. But she was alive and kicking and the broom was going down - well up.
Putting her hand over the trusty old devil she called her broom she said "Up" much more calmly, and forcefully than she had before.
This time it worked. The broom flew up into her awaiting hands. She felt special - happy about it even.
And now she had to get airborn and fly this thing. It wasn't that she didn't have broom control - Vindictus was just her head of house she wasn't scared of him...not that that would matter right? She was just nervous of showing Yes I am able to fly... and then the questions would come. And she'd admit stupidly her dad used to be a small time quidditch captain - and that her older sister was a member of his team...and was training to go to the world cup.

Yeah! He could fly. Hugo loved flying. Just not with this ruddy school broom. Like seriously, how fast could this thing go? Hugo smiled to himself. Having become better and better at Quidditch over the years, he was gonna go so fast, it would be awe- d'aww, no showing off? With a pouty face Hugo mounted his broom. He'd have to practise for Quidditch somehow, right? He kicked off gently (way too gently) and shot upwards.
It had only taken him three years to learn how to fly, but at least when he did he was doing a pretty well. Honestly, he had never really tried for fear he would fall, but he had grown a lot more comfortable. He floated around, not too high above the ground as he watched some of the first years struggling. As he did so he was reminded of the divination class by the centaur was the bird patterns, so he thought he should try some on a broomstick. He took off by leaning forward and then began to fly up and down, very smoothly and slowly, by carefully pushing the handle down, then pulling it back up. He continued to fly in this manner until he completed a full circle. It was somewhat relaxing, and almost like sailing on a broomstick. Good thing he didn't get seasick.
After she had calmed down a bit, Desiree realized there was no way to avoid this. The only place she could go was up, literally. Breathing slowly trying to remember everything the teacher had said. She slowly kicked off the ground. Eep. She closed her eyes not wanting to see the broom rising or the tree she was surely going to crash into.
...But she didn't feel anything. Am I dead? She slowly opened her eyes and realized she was obviously alive, simply hovering no more than three feet off the ground. Well maybe this is alright.. ya as long as the broom isn't going anywhere.
Now that the questioning of his expert instructions had ceased, Vindictus continued with the lesson. Harlow's breath was coming in short little gasps as she looked down at the broom at her feet. This was it. Her first real flying lesson. Not that hanging on the broom as it drug you around that she had done last week that scared her hair straight.
She placed her hand over the broom, "Up." she squeaked in her tiny voice. The broom rolled over and didn't move again. She cleared her voice. "Up." she said again and the broom floated up into her outstetched hand.
Harlow swung her leg over the broom and bounced a few times. Convinced that the broom wasn't going to kill her she closed her eyes and pushed the tips of her feet gently off the ground.
It was a few good seconds before she opened her eyes. She looked down and gave another squeak. She was hovering a few feet off the ground. But to her it felt like miles. She threw her body against the handle of the broom and clutched it for dear life. The broom pitched forward and dove at the ground.
"YIKES!" she rolled off the broom right before it smacked onto the pitch. Harlow lay on her back taking in gulps of the crisp air.

Well, at least this time isn't so bad. Jenny thought as her broom (slowly) moved forward towards...no idea where. Hm. Maybe she should lean her body a bit more forward.
And her broom moved a bit faster. Wow. But she needed to slow down soon...as in really soon. Her broom was speeding around like a Muggle racecar. She tried remembering the flying lesson in her previous years. How did she do it?
Quickly swinging a leg up and over, he kicked off as if it was the most natural thing in the world. Which it was, really. Cael and his guardians raced all the time at the Manor. It was one of the few times he actually looked forward to spending time with him.
The broom was a tad slower than the ones he was used to, but no matter, it was fun to finally be back in the air after so long.

Up was the aim here. Not straight ahead. Not a few inches off the ground. Ashley stared at the broom, as though he was trying to mind-meld with it somehow. See, maybe that was the problem; the broom just didn't know that he wanted to go up. It had just figured that 'off the ground' was good enough.
Now that things were all sorted, as far as Ashley was hoping, he kicked off again, this time at an angle. That was another thing to remember. Angles were helpful.
This time went a little better, in that up was achieved rather shortly, and the ground was moving farther away instead of staying the same distance. He leaned in a little, feeling pretty confident, but pull back just a bit soon after, mostly to see if he could. Not too much, he remembered. This was good, though. He was up, he was moving, he was definitely not on the ground. All things he wanted to achieve here. He even smiled a little, just for a moment.

Cael slowly eased the broom up to the same height as the rest of the class. Smiling happily he gently rolled to the side, loving the view of the Earth rotating around him as he spun. Blue...green...blue...green. Haha, he could keep this up all day. Sadly, he felt it was time to try something else.

Next he would try flying in circles but he had already been doing that, so no point. Zig-zaging! It was basically the same as going up and down, only he did it from side to side, left to right. No sharp and sudden turns, just a smooth, zig-zag ride around the stadium. He periodically checked to see if any of the first years needed any assistance, but they all seemed to be doing alright so he just continued to slowly float across the field, very leisurely. All it took was a slight turn of the handle and then back, until he completed a whole circle. He made his way back to where he had started, then made a safe landing, and after a short pause he took off again. He was very impressed with the talent of some first years, they should definitely keep practicing and tryout for Quidditch next year.
Leveling out, he started to do a couple of loose laps around his friends. The cool wind felt lovely as it whipped past his face. He enjoyed watching the others. Nobody seemed to be having a particularly difficult time of it. He'd been afraid kids would be falling off their brooms left and right.

Janice mounted her broom. She still can't believe that she's in the quidditch team this year. She kicked the soft, grassy ground gently and went up in the air. This, she thought, is fun. She watches as her classmates go up in the air, and followed them upwards.

Letting his broom come to a natural stop, Cael drifted lazily along with the wind. It was a bit breezy today, but nothing out of the ordinary for October. The view of the Forrest was stunning now that the leaves were starting to change color. The castle grounds were almost meticulous despite the fact that some of the leaves were already starting to fall. Looking down, he waited for the Professor's next instructions.
