The first floor was... certainly busier in a different way than Professor Schirmer's own usual haunt of the third level. Less injured children she supposed, and more Dash. She wondered if the professors of the first floor were more social as a result and made up her mind to befriend the healer. Third floor solidarity.
The classroom she'd chosen for the defense lesson had been one of her favourites as a student, and the tall blonde woman was a little bit dismayed to see how dusty and unused it was. Really, Hogwarts was it so hard to keep yourself clean? Even with elves that were off doing goodness knew what? A few quick charms and minutes later the room was sparkling.
Literally.
Unlike most of the Defense rooms, this one featured bright windows that allowed the light to stream in, diffused with colours and generally giving the room a bright and happy feel. The view looked out over the lake. There were no desks or chairs in the room and even the professor took a seat on the ground, waiting there with her feet tucked up comfortably beneath her for the students to arrive. She had a stack of books next to her and looked serene, if a bit distant.
When it was time, she charmed the doors to open, and greeted the students as they begin to file in.
ooc: the lesson will begin approximately 7.5 hours from the time of this post I'm simply opening it now so you can post arriving if you want to. The lesson has begun! Please act as if you were here all along if you haven't yet posted, latecomers will likely lose points. Please remember to follow Professor Schirmer's rules which can be found here.
SPOILER!!: the room looks something like this

In addition the room is now decorated for a party. Balloons and streamers are everywhere, there are tables set up with food and drink, and music playing to add to the festive feel.
Questions: What do you know, or think you know, about the Patronus Charm?
Discuss amongst yourselves some famous witches and wizards and their known Patronus forms. Given what we know about them; their achievements, their experiences, what do you think their Patronus form indicates about their personalities?
For those of you who can cast a Corporeal Patronus and know what form it takes, see if you can match up how it fits your personality. Younger students, you can work with students who do have a known Spirit Guardian, or you can look up mine, which is a Dove, or Headmaster Tate's which is a Mountain Goat, or that of another adult you know, even some of the historical figures we were discussing.
"I want you to think of your happiest memory. Something strong enough that you can focus on it easily, maybe something that makes you smile. It doesn't have to be relating to love. If you have more than one, lucky you! You can experiment to see which is best. You don't have to share it if you don't want to, but feel free to put your hand up and share if you do.

Levitation party activity! Click here for instructions. Read the post carefully and please take note of your classmates posts following this one too. Worth ten points!
edit: Activity still running, only please focus on the third part, AKA testing out your happy memory with a levitation potion.
The party is still going, you can help yourself to food or drink while we wait for a guest fetched via a patronus message. In the meantime the professor wants to know who can cast a patronus already and whether its corporeal or non-corporeal.
PLEASE be realistic with your character's abilities. The patronus charm is ADVANCED magic and little firsties should NOT be able to manage it. For the purposes of this class please pay attention to the following:
6th & 7th years: May be able to cast a corporeal or non-corporeal patronus, depending on character's skill level and experience. May learn how to do one or the other during the lesson.
5th years: May be able to cast non-corporeal patronus, depending on character's skill level and experience, very FEW and RARELY may a 5th year manage a corporeal patronus. May learn how to do one or the other during the lesson.
4th years: Depending on character's skill level and experience, very FEW and RARELY may a 4th year manage a non-corporeal patronus. May learn a non-corporeal patronus during the lesson.
3rd years: Depending on character's skill level and experience, may learn a non-corporeal patronus during the lesson. But its okay for them NOT to learn how yet too.
1st & 2nd years: Depending on character's skill level and experience, may learn an UNSTABLE non-corporeal patronus during the lesson. This means they might manage a slight whisp, but otherwise should NOT be able to cast a patronus. Its okay for them NOT to learn how yet too.
When we get to the spell casting aspect of the lesson, please note that anyone not being realistic may have their post edited or deleted, which I don't WANT to do but we're not all Harry Potter! For reference, Althea learned hers in 6th year non-corporeally, and managed a corporeal patronus in 7th year. Remember, just because your character might not be able to do it yet, it doesn't mean they never will!
As you saw, Professor Scabior came because I sent him a Patronus message. What do you think are the benefits of communicating via Patronus?
"Alright are you all ready to give it a go? Stand up if you are and make sure you give each other a bit of space. Wands out. The incantation is Expecto Patronum. Ecks-PEK-toh pa-TRO-num. You simply need to point your wand and focus really hard on that strong happy memory. Practice the incantation a few times to get the hang of it and then you may start. Those of you who can already manage it, please do encourage the younger ones and let them see how you do it. I have an activity for you too, that we'll start in a little while!"
Please note, I'm waiting to get an all clear regarding the recent Malware threat on SS before continuing, not because of any risk, rather because several people may be staying away right now and I'd rather be sure nobody is left at a disadvantage because they don't feel safe accessing the site. Expect that the lesson will continue on sunday. Everything is all clear Sorry for any trouble.

Shrugging her shoulders somewhat, she sat back up straight and adjusted the book in her lap, ready to read through the rest of the animals. Maybe not yet though. Not when Kurumi switched the question back to her. Looking back up to the Gryffindor girl, Evelyn was silent for a few moments longer before speaking up.
"The caracal." Grin. Now...now she was tempted to look for a good match for Kurumi.

This should be fun. Jonathan flipped through the pages and looked for the horse. It has been the first time that he actually tried to research about his own patronus. He had thought about it once and then it just completely got off of his to-do list. So the professor giving them a chance with this made him remember about it.
Getting a piece of parchment he wrote down the personality of a horse:

Sarah nodded. "Professor, then do you know the Patronus of James Potter? Would it be the same as Harry's?" Since they shared the same characteristics, right? This ringed another question. "Can any two people have same patronus form?" she asked, curiously. The Patronus theory was really exciting that Sarah had several questions.
Sarah took the book and looked up the names of the creatures and their characters. She was awe-struck. Wow, these people actually made a index of the creature's state of minds? Wicked. Even humans sometimes can't figure out what they are thinking! She tried to remember her parents patronuses. Her uncle had told her about them. She tried to remember her parents. Huh, she couldn't do so successfully. She never had the chance to be with them. Instead she thought of her uncle's. A Jaguar.

Uncle Matt's Patronus - Jaguar
Characteristics and Wisdom of Jaguars
Seeing the roads within chaos
Understanding the patterns of chaos
Moving without fear in the darkness

Cool. All fits! Sarah looked impressed. This made a small clearing about her doubts on Patronus. She decided to look for another. Her aunt's patronus. What was it now, again?
SPOILER!!: Sarah's notes
Aunt Christine's Patronus - Wolverine

Understanding aggression
Protection against attackers
Multilevel protection
Standing your ground
Fierceness
Elusiveness
Gluttonry
Cleverness

Woah. That is quite a lot. She didn't know if it really fitted her aunt. Though, there are several things she didn't know about her. Sarah waited for the next call from the professor, mean while, she thought about what her patronus could be. She looked through the pages. Are you in here? she thought. Suddenly, she had another query.
"Professor, should corporeal patronuses always be an animal? Nothing else?" she asked. "Sorry, if that question is really silly" Ought to be.

Tiffany jotted down notes as the professor had told them a lot about how one person's characteristic was related to his or her patronus. Then she came up with a question. She raised her hand and asked excitedly, "Professor, my mother's patronus was a rabbit then I would like to know that would my patronus be rabbit too?"
She was very interested in ones patronus, it sounded really fun to her, finding her own patronus. It was a pity that she was a first year student, she was not able to find her own one. She flipped to the page that talked about the quality of rabbit.

Well Gideon knew he wasn't able to cast a corporal patronus...had never even tried and anything he had ever heard including in today's class was that it took a lot of effort to finally get to that point. When the professor broke them off to do a class assignment, he briefly looked around the room debating pairing up with an older student. However he finally opted to just work by his parents' own, taking one of the offered books on the subject to look them up.
Mum's was an owl so he looked it up first, writing down it and the personality traits the book described about it.
Quote:
Celeste Gert
Patronus: Owl
Traits:
Stealth
Secrecy
Silent and swift movement
Seeing behind masks
Keen sight
Messenger of secrets and omens
Shape-shifting
Link between the dark, unseen world and the world of light
Comfort with shadow self
Moon magick
Freedom
Looking back over the list, Gideon could see a few traits that already seemed to fit his mother to a T. The shape-shifting went with her abilities as an animangus, though he couldn't help wondering what came first, her ability to shift or create a patronus. Moving on the keen sight was there...other thing he was aware she had and her love and knowledge of astronomy could be connected to both moon magick and the link between darkness and light.
The discussions were good and lots of interesting points were coming up. Althea continued the lesson onward.
"So some interesting points have been raised, and we'll return to that topic for homework. But we know that personality can be indicated by the Patronus form, so the question is, how does that relate to you? If you don't know your Patronus form yet, could you get an idea of what it might be in advance? What about by taking into account other disciplines like Arithmancy? Do your traits as indicated by your numbers match up with the traits your Corporeal Patronus? Some food for thought." She shifted slightly and leaned against one hand.
"There are a few books here about animal totems and their associated meanings." She began to pass the books around. "For those of you who can cast a Corporeal Patronus and know what form it takes, see if you can match up how it fits your personality. Younger students, you can work with students who do have a known Spirit Guardian, or you can look up mine, which is a Dove, or Headmaster Tate's which is a Mountain Goat, or that of another adult you know, even some of the historical figures we were discussing."
She smiled at them. "I'll give you ten minutes for this exercise and in the mean time if you have a question feel free to ask it."
[/INDENT]OOC: here is a reference, feel free to use google too.Animal Totems
Only 5th - 7th years should be able to cast a corporeal Patronus, and even then only those students who are advanced and have worked at it. Don't be afraid to have your character NOT be able to cast one yet. Maybe they'll manage by the end of class, maybe not. Try to be realistic regarding your character's age and abilities.
Ok so August didn't really know many of the 'famous' witches and wizards that the rest of the students had just spent so much time talking about and had just sort of sat there listening and making the occasional note here and there about them, guessing that they were pretty important.
Now they were going to look up some meanings of Corporeal Patronuses? Auggie couldn't wait until he could make one of his own but for now he would have to settle with looking at others and finding their meanings. So he searched for the one that Kurumi had mentioned, Kingsley Shacklebolt, Ministry of Magic security/Auror who helped with security of the minister and the muggle prime Minister as well as helping protect Harry Potter. Pretty impressive.

Victoria knew immediately that her Spirit Guardian is meant to be a fox. She has never conjured a patronus, or ever tried to. It's just her instinct.
She flipped through her textbook hurrily, trying to find fox's personality. At last, she found what she was looking. Victoria took a piece of blank parchment and wrote:
Selina set to work writing out her fact sheet on the Patronus spell. She knew that her father's was a dog. What type of dog she wasn't sure. She had only seen him cast a patronus once and it was when she was much younger. So she flipped through her book and looked up the generic dog.

Kurumi turned her attention back to the front of the room when the Professor called for their attention. They needed to think about their own Patronus? Well, that wasn't something she was going to be able to do since she was only a fourth year and the principles behind that were still far beyond what she was able to do. She smiled a bit when they were told that they could examine someone that they knew, and her thoughts immediately went to her father.
While she waited for one of the books to circulate to her, Kurumi grabbed a piece of parchment wrote her name at the top. After finishing, a book was passed to her and she immediately began flipping through it until she reached the O section. "O...p...op...op..." she said to herself as she skimmed the page. There is was!
Kurumi began to read about her father's Patronus and was alarmed at how fitting it was - given what she had learned about him in her research the past year.
SPOILER!!: parchment quick notes
Opossum:
Proper use of deception
Use of appearances

Gaining wisdom
Recovery
Opossum teaches the lesson of using and enhancing appearances and deceptions and illusions. He also aids in resting when needed (playing dead), and the art to act or behave in strategic manner as appearing to be fearful or fearless in spite of true feelings. Opossum gives courage to pretend for a while in order to cope with mental and spiritual constructs. He teaches wisdom and sensibility and knows when to fight if needed.
It was actually really creepy how fitting it was, especially since her father was actually still playing dead with his family. Something like 25 years of doing that now and all to protect his family. An entire life of lies, deceptions, and illusions...was it possible that his inner workings knew that the future events were going to happen. His Patronus hadn't changes from what she knew...seemed like something she needed to ask him about if she ever got the chance.
Then Kurumi heard Cookie!Hater speak to William and suggest a possible animal his Patronus could turn into and went to skim through the book for no other reason than she was curious. "Actually, William," she said with a small smile. "I think it fits you more than you think. You always say you associate yourself with a lion, and the peccary also has a connection to the large cats, quick movements, warns others of harm..." She passed him the book for him to take another look. Just because it wasn't large didn't mean that it wouldn't serve him well as a Patronus. Kurumi was pretty sure that her Patronus would be something small and her father, well, his was an opossum.
" I apologize to you" William told Evelyn. He thinks that is her name. " You are right dince yo uand Kurumi both tpld me my patronus is a peccary" William said to Everlyn " Thanks for clearin g everyhing up " William smiled at Kurumi. " I thought Lion because of family ties and Elephant ,but I forget why at this point" William explained to Kurumo.
Josephine thought about for a second, her pseudo-older-sister's patronus was a swan, so she could use that one to describe it:

Keefer did know what his Patronus was, and he didn't know of anyone else that had the same animal. His was an okapi. Most people have never even heard of them. But Keefer was one-of-a-kind, so it makes sense that his Patronus would be, too.
He scribbled down some notes he knew about okapis.
Quote:
gentle and shy around strangers
unique
can blend in to surroundings and not be seen
rare breed
Well, Keefer did try to blend in to the crowd around people he didn't know, so that definitely fit. But in his comfort zone, he was odd--though he preferred to think of it as unique. Keefer was definitely a rare breed, what with his constant skipping and knack for having unusual views.
Professor Pink | Mrs. Bruce Wayne | I'm on a Goat | Glitterpuff | Dumbledore's Defense Squad | BHB
Hmmm mountain goats, eh? Tori found it hilarious that this was the Headmaster's patronus, but she also wanted to know what it meant. So after a moment of thinking, she flipped through the totem spirit book to the page on goats.
Symbol of surefootedness, independence, abundance. Hmm, she could see that. Now what about...say... dragons?
"The dragon's medicine includes change and transformation, wisodm, infinity, longevity and movement through space, and the supernatural." Oooh wicked. Tori liked that one. She smirked to herself and quickly wrote it down on her parchment for safekeeping.

A...what? Kurumi blinked a few times as she tried to register what exactly a caracal was for some reason she thought of caramels. She flipped through the book until she found the page with it listed. Oh, also known as the desert lynx, interesting, Kurumi wasn't sure she had ever seen one of these cats until now.
Expect a caracal totem to also be able to do near impossible feats with grace and ease. They can extract maximum results from very little. Caracals tend to be deeply spiritual and attribute their uncanny talent to their own inner harmony and oneness with their world.
Kurumi peeked up at Evelyn, reading this description made her not seem so scary. Probably because she now had a creature to associate her with. Creatures always made everything seem better, like looking at the world through rose colored glasses.

Kurumi smiled at William. "No need to apologize really," at least not to her. She couldn't speak for Evelyn. "It's all just speculation really. Looking at the descriptions here, my patronus could be any of several things." She went back to skimming the textbook, but wasn't too keen on doing anymore reading about her father's patronus - it was making her feel a little sick. "You won't know for sure until you are able to produce one yourself, just...don't rule out any options yet." Who knows, maybe the younger lion in front of her would one day have a giant elephant sprout from his wand. "How about your parents? What form does their patronus take?"

Well...so it was true. Love had to do a lot with patronuses. He knew it!!! Smiling a bit, he looked around a bit as he listened to the rest of Professor's words. Animal totems and their associated meanings? Now this did sound interesting. He had always wondered about it anyway and it was not boring to see one's traits anyway. If, of course, they did match him.
Picking up one of those books, Josh eyed the pages carefully until he came to the section of his patronus. Surely, he could remember the form of it.

Jesifur opened the book and right away two animals caught her eye. The Dhole, who looked very much like her Shiba Inu at home. The traits were communal living, adaptability, use of voice, individuality, intelligence, coordination, ability to remain unique, and understanding persecution. The other animal that stood out was the Vervet monkey. It's traits were environmental adaptability, ingenious survival abilities, and ability to understand complex family issues. The last part hit home for Jesifur. Being from a muggle/wizard family she had always instinctively knew when she could or could not use magic. It was like second nature to her, like breathing would be for most people. She knew as a first year she would not be able to cast a full patronus, but she thought most likely when she did it would be one of those two animals.
Louisa continued to listen intently at that. She couldn't hide the excitement about being able to talk about Patronuses with the others - almost all of her friends know theirs by now and it was kind of making her feel left out. Not anymore though!
She looked around to see if any older students were going to try theirs out. She hadn't seen a fully cast Patronus yet but she would LOVE to do so, now. Maybe the Professor would conjure it and let them behold its beauty? YES.
Meanwhile, the girl needed to know what were the traits of their headmaster's Mountain Goat. He was in the daily prophet a lot lately and with the weird rules going around in school this term, she wanted to know EGGSACKTLY who he was. And yes, she'd just quoted professor Christian. Heh.
SPOILER!!: Headmaster Tate's notes
Mountain Goats:

Independence.
Surefootedness.

.... he sounded fine, 'seeking new heights' did worry Louisa, though. That meant he was a person of change and evolution. That was a bit scary to people like Louisa who didn't like sudden and massive twist in their life. But, no, Tate was pretty good. He was agile!
"Interesting theory. But which kind of Dragon? There are several after all." Althea smiled at the Ravenclaw.
Althea had been listening to the talk about Andros the Invincible, and now when she was addressed she answered. "A dove."

Eino took one of the animal totem books and flipped through the pages until he found dragons. He was going to try to narrow it down to a few possibilities, but there were so many dragons. Here, we go: Dragon: Born of Fire, Protector, Exists between thoughts, Ability to move between worlds, Connection to the birth of the Universe, Red Dragon sleeps in the core of the Earth. After reading, Eino paused to think about these characteristics in relation to Merlin. Well, clearly he had the ability to move between worlds. That is, he was an important figure in both the magical world and the muggle world, so that was a perfect match. Merlin also protect both muggles and wizards, so protector also made sense. He didn't really know what to make of the rest, but he didn't really need to. He was convinced that Merlin's patronus was a dragon, and a big one, too. Since she was too young to have her own Patronus, Orr headed to find one of the books and look through them for a famous person's Patronus. She chose Albus Dumbledore's Patronus since she was fascinated by him and the role he had in shaping the current wizarding world.

Phoenix' Wisdom Includes Among Other Things:
Protector of all Fire
Death and Rebirth
Regeneration

The information she had discovered was very interesting.
