Muggle Studies Lesson One: I'm gonna mail myself to you
Ready for your first muggle studies lesson of the term? Professor Meredith Moxley is. She's arranged the space so that rows of tables are situated around the room, two chairs at each one. All tables are facing front and the arrangement has put Professor Moxley's desk, and the large floating white board just behind it, directly in your line of sight. She is, after all, the main attraction.
You'll find your professor sitting behind her desk, humming a tune to herself as she fiddles with the bright orange vest she's wearing for this occasion. The zipper in the front appears to be stuck but NO WORRIES, she's got this covered! Why don't you go find a seat and class will be getting started shortly. Oh and don't forget to check out the board! Your first assignment is already up there.
Quote:
Welcome to Muggle Studies!
Please fill out the sticky name tag located at your table with your name, nickname, house, and year! Then slap it on your shirt! Class will be starting soon!

"A bubbly personality would help. I mean, someone who gets grumpy easily probably wouldn't be able to handle all they have to go thru as easily." At least, not with a smile on their face. Which was why Heather could never do it. The first time a dog chased her, she would be so over it. The job that was. Man, mail carriers had to be nuts!

”Hello! As most of you have probably figured out, I’m Meredith Moxley, your new Muggle Studies professor. “ How lucky were THEY, right? She was the best of the best. "I see not everyone read the notice board about attire but no matter, you'll be just fine doing the activity in your robes, if not a bit restricted. They weren't exactly good for physical activity. ”I’d like to start by-“ Her hands had somehow found the zipper of her vest again and she tugged at it absently as she talked. ”Hearing your opinions on this course. Why do YOU think we study muggles? She looked at them expectantly JUST as she gave the zipper ONE last hard tug and the thing BROKE right off, the actual zipper part flying off into the first row of tables.
It took Abbi a quick moment to greet the new Muggle Studdies Professor before sitting down. Her opinions on the lady involved words mostly to do with a bubbly type of hyper person and only because she looked that way, not because Abs had, had actual evidence that she was in fact like that.
Either way the fifth year began with the instructions to follow, by scribbling her: name, year and house to help the Professor with identification. She then actually listened a she had rather been doing well at that this term so far.
Easiest. Question. Ever. Well for a muggleborn that was. Could you tell this was that one class Abs actually excelled in?
"Professor, simple. It's because we need to know how to disguise ourselves around them and seem just as they are whenever they see us." You know, cause like she never knew magic REALLY existed until after she got her letter from Salem and then Donny explained and so on." I also think that we can actually learn some stuff from them like I find it really cool how they invent things that sort of replace what some magic can do for us?" LIKE HELLO CELL PHONES-even though wizards had their better equivalent to that. Cell phones, just looked cool okay? Same with cars and Abs could go forever at this, she not ever was ashamed of being a muggleborn.

If anyone was paying attention to Mr. Tempus earlier, he noticed that I was wearing a post-person’s vest.” Meredith did a little turn, showcasing the item of clothing with a smile. ”Can anyone tell the class something they know about muggle mail and how it works?
To think that some wizards knew nothing about this, felt kind of strange to Abbi yet she could in some way relate. When she'd first arrived here EVERYTHING magic had been alien to her, so surely it would be the same if reversed.
The brunette raised her hand and waited her turn. "They're basically the owls of the muggle world." Simple way of putting it, was it not?
Third question, now this one Abbi actually thought about for a moment, because she wanted to say something a bit more interesting than the usual 'cheerful' or 'patient' type of answer she herself would of expected most to say.
Her hand was raised and then she shot her answer about. "Someone that won't judge people when they have morning hair or ugly pajamas." Perhaps they didn't always deliver post in the early mornings or even post to people in person a lot of the time but those things could and DID happen.
Maybe not as an exciting answer as the fifth year had wanted it to be, but what more could she think of? After all a postman's job was very simple, although just as necessary for the muggle world to function correctly.

It might also be best if postmen/women didn't have families. Because they had to work even on holidays, right? So yeah. But she didn't say that aloud. It was kind of SAD.
Patience was a great answer and one she'd expected to hear several times. It was definitely one of the most apparent personality traits of a person doing a profession like this.
"Those of you that mentioned patience were right on the money. Dealing with traffic, crowded sidewalks, disgruntled customers, and unappealing weather conditions can definitely take a toll on a person. Being patient and taking each of these things as they come in a calm manner is something that would certainly be beneficial when doing a job like this one."

This is the other trait Meredith expected to hear over and over again. No one wanted to deal with a grump and when you encounter as many people as those delivering the mail did on a daily basis, being personable was extremely beneficial.
"Being affable is certainly an ideal trait when working at a job like this one. Not only does it make the people and animals one might come into contact with more at ease, but it makes the job more enjoyable for the person doing it."

It also didn't sound like a job for Kate. She didn't think she'd like to ride around and visit everybody's house in the whole neighborhood and have to put up with their pets, too. She just liked to be on the receiving end of the whole mail business.

All kinds of things went into being a capable post person and Meredith was pleased with the range of answers falling into this category. Instead answering cheerfully, "I like your enthusiasm, Mr. Toussaint! They are indeed awesome for putting up with all they do in order to deliver letters and parcels to people expecting them." Muggle Studies Lesson 1: Muggle Mail
Why do we study muggles? The need to blend in: When needing to coexist with society, we wouldn't want to raise suspicion by not knowing what the simplest of 'muggle' items are. [Kate Addison] The need to trade: Muggles make important materials like zippers/buttons and grow crops that witches and wizards would need to survive; clothing, food, etc. [Amur Neverwinter] To gain tolerance: To more efficiently coexist with what you can better understand. [Tobias Tempus] To feel grateful: To better appreciate the power we have and to better understand the muggle struggle without things that make our lives more convenient. [Caleb Newell] Relationships:...because friendships/love? often blur the lines between muggles and our kind. [Dima Toussaint] To be more efficient: To know when it's right to use magic for something and when it right to just carry on in the muggle way of things. (i.e. when there isn't a spell and/or magic to carry out a certain task) [Ruby Banner]
How does MUGGLE MAIL work? Stamps and envelopes are used.
They have to pay a fee.
They do not use owls, but person to person delivery.
They have their mail delivered at different speeds depending on the class of stamp/fee.
There is a sorting process before mail goes out (which makes it take longer)
Muggles take days off, meaning their mail doesn't run on certain days/holidays. This differs from country to country.
Sometimes addresses are written incorrectly or someone has moved from one place to another, meaning the mail system must 'return to sender'.
Different countries abide by different customs laws.
Finn was going to answer with something along the lines of what other classmates had said, endurance, fitness, strength. But, since he'd taken some time it was too late now to answer and give the Professor an explanation she's already heard. So at this point he just continued listening on.

The quiet kiddos were being watched, of course. Moxley wanted to make sure they weren't doing anything sketchy while she was strutting her stuff up here, sharing pots of knowledge gold to the class. Luckily they seemed to be thinking and note taking so the silence was acceptable. Carry on.

Patience, physical fitness, charisma....all already said. UMM. The third year bit her lip and wracked her brain for something creative to say. Struck with sudden inspiration, she put her hand in the air and offered, "They probably can't have bad allergies, if they're outside and around dogs all the time." Boom. Nailed it.
This was certainly something she hadn't considered, though not having allergies wasn't exactly a personality trait. Still, she appreciated the effort and the fact that this was a unique answer. "Allergies would make the job difficult indeed, Ms. Kittredge."

What personality traits would make a good postman? Or woman? Puck thought for a minute before raising her hand again. “I’m not sure if it’s a trait exactly but someone that likes physical activity and enjoys being active as they would have to carry the parcel bags around and I have heard that those can be rather heavy.” Really. What did people put in those letters anyway?
This one was mouthy, huh? Meredith raised her eyebrows at the grumbling and would've commented if the girl hadn't spoke up right after so that she could properly hear what was being said. "Perhaps next time leave out the dramatic hand gestures then, Ms. Greyvson. It's hard to take someone's answer seriously when they're doing things like that." But her apology was accepted.
As for her answer to the question about personality traits, Meredith nodded. "Very good. That would fall under the capable category."

"And they'd need to be super trustworthy, 'cause mail is usually important and private and personal. You need to know that someone who's bringing that to people's doors can be trusted." Which, y'know, Toby didn't think would be a problem. He couldn't think of a single person that he knew today who he wouldn't trust to bring him a note or letter or package without opening or stealing it. But he figured it was still a suitable answer, even if a little redundant 'cause OF COURSE nobody would do such a thing anyway.
Mr. Tempus brought up a good point and one that would transition them nicely into the next part of class so Moxley gave him a kind smile and an approving nod of her head.
"Being dependable is certainly a trait I'd hope my postman or postwoman had, especially when dealing with important and personal letters and parcels. Being able to trust those dealing with your items is extremely important. Very good!"
Pausing to write the categories she'd just discussed on the board, Meredith underlined each and checked the time quickly. Yup, they needed to move on.
Clapping her hands together, the brunette stood in front of her desk again and eyed the group. "I'd like everyone to get up from their seats and move to the front of the room. I'm going to do a little reorganizing and I think it best if you're out of the way." Didn't want anyone being hit by a table! "While you're standing up here, I'd like you to find a partner! Someone you feel you can trust would be best." Dependability was important as she'd just mentioned. "Alright, you lot. Let's get a move on!"
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Adi copied down the traits as Moxley wrote them down on the board. He had never considered all these traits that a post person would need. Anyway, they needed to move? The fifth year was curious as to what the woman was up to but he got to his feet.
Partner? Adi's eyes darted to AJ. "She's probably going to shoot you down again,'' he thought. But there was his bestie. Adi could always count on him. Plus he was the first person he trusted. "You're my partner, Benny,'' he said, not even giving the other boy a chance to refuse as he headed to the front of the room. He was sure his bestie would agree, anyway.
If anyone needs a partner, feel free to snag us :)
~ Rise and Rise Again, Until Lambs become Lions ~
Amur shuffled up out of her seat, stuffing her books in her bag as she mosied up to the front of the class. She didn't want to get her robe tails caught in between any shifting desks or chairs.
As for the 'partner one could trust', she wasn't so sure about that one. There were very few people she knew in the class, which meant even fewer that she could legitimately trust. Did this mean they were going to be doing something dangerous? If it had to be someone that one could trust?
Biting her bottom lip, she shuffled up beside the board and looked about. Always best to wait and observe, rather than rushing headlong into something. Especially if it was dangerous. And so far, the class discussion had been pointing towards a rather dangerous career.

Essentially.
Looking around, he tried to think through possibilities logically. Not Caleb...because they, as Prefects, needed to space out. So, that counted out Zander...and CB...and Adi....and really, they needed to try and mix up the years, if they could. It was most logical, anyway.
Hmm.
Gabriel cleared his throat. "Would anyone like to work with me?" FORCED CASUAL.

Abbi got to her feet and looked around for the closest people beside her. Don, Don wasn't there which was a pity because who else could you trust more than your best friend? Okay-well you boyfriend you could, or you were meant to, but Lucas wasn't there either. SIGH. WHY. Her eyes shifted to Ruby's brother, who looked extremely tense with his throat clearing and what not.
"So like if you're game, I am?" she had walked up to the Ravenclaw prefect, thinking that it couldn't be that bad with him. Could it? After all if Rubes was too cool for words, wouldn't he be too? Or maybe not?

Dot actually REALLY wanted to work with Gabe, but she was too slow and someone STOLE him away. She dragged herself up to the front of the room and eyed the rest of the class. Who did she trust? Dima. Kyroh. Where was Maddie? Gabe. Sophie. Toby. Thornton. Cinna.
Okay, so who didn't she trust? Basically just Bart. Oh, also, she didn't really trust anyone with REAL secrets, so what was this trust business about?
"I need a partner who is trustworthy. And also who knows stuff about mail, that would be nice, because I just don't." Anyone? Make the ginger feel wanted, k?

Heading up to the front, Lux had no idea who she wanted to partner up with. She had loads of friends, and it seemed that some of them were already starting to pair up. If Bay was here she would have chosen him, but as it was she wasn't sure who she wanted to work with; she only knew she'd never pick Emmy or Buttface Brae.
As she stood there, she decided to let someone come to her because why not. "Does anyone want to be my partner?" Preferably someone she knew and trusted, but yeah. That part remained unsaid.
Angel got up and started to head for the front, she had no idea who to partner with. "Anyone want to be my partner?" Angel had thought about asking Benny but Adi seemed to have already snagged her boyfriend but that was okay, she would have gone and asked her sister but well she wasn't sure if her sister was happy with her for some strange reason.
Angel looked around to see if she could find someone to be her partner, she thought that the work was going to be cool but she hoped they weren't going to pretend to be mail carries or something like that.

All good traits for a muggle mail man he supposed, and Benny wrote them down in his notes alongside what he himself had already given. Patience, affablity, capability and anything else that was mentioned. He was drawn back to the professor as she clapped her hands, her words drawing them into the announcement of an activity of sorts. He moved obediantly to his feet to follow the rest to the front of the room as instructed.
The Gryffindor was about to wonder whom he should partner up with when Adi was quick to claim him. Benny nodded in acceptance, moving to stand next to the Hufflepuff up front. "Of course dear Hippogriff."
Abby was looking for a partner and saw a younger gryffindor who looked like someone she trusted and said "Hey want to be partners"
Amur started, surprised that someone had come over so quickly. Her head swiveled over the bag she clutched to her chest. A small smile touched her lips as she nodded at the other girl.
"Sure." Why not? What was there to loose?
....Hopefully no toes or fingers.
Shuffling her feet, she made her way over to the other girl, noting that there were others who were either reluctant to choose a partner or just didn't know who to choose.
Reaching her newly-found partner, Amur held out her hand. "Amur Neverwinter."

Taking notes. Notes. Then some more notes. Flexing her fingers when they began to cramp up before quickly finishing her notes. Just in time to cause now she had to stand up and move to the front of the room.
Partners. Why did it always have to be partners? And someone she really trusted?!
Wanting to bang her head off the wall the little snake made her way slowly to the front of the classroom. Her eyes slowly scanned the room for a partner...

Honest. He appreciated honesty most of the time, and he was fully aware Dot was a clever one for her age, only two years apart, but still. Which is why he stood next to year, "I'm trustworthy." Says one of Maddie Copper's allies. If he's an ally then he's trustworthy. You're in good hands, Dot.
Ironically enough, he wasn't aware of what sort of activity the Professor will be proposing, so his knowledge on muggle mail maaay fall a bit short. Then again, it depends on the difficulty of the entire ordeal. He knew more than basics, so it was alright. "You can count on me." Definitely, yes. He gave her a smile.

Kate sat there listening to the professor respond to their answers. She didn't really know what else to add about Muggle mail. She didn't have much experience with it and had just gotten her own delivery owl. She'd planned to use it as much as she could. She didn't even know any Muggles she'd be sending mail to.
It turned out she didn't need to come up with anything else about mail to say right now, because they were up and on their feet and searching for a partner. Kate started in the direction the professor called them toward. "Anyone still need a partner?" she asked. Hopefully everyone wasn't all paired up now.
Eden enjoyed how nice this woman seemed. And seemed, because you never knew who people REALLY were behind their masks. But so far. She did like Professor Moxley. And they were learning some COOL STUFF. So that was a definite plus.
Yep.
She finished writing out her last bit of notes about all this mail stuff before standing shyly, going to the front of the room, searching for someone she'd feel comfortable with as a partner....oh! OH! She spotted the reeeed hair of LUX and stepped closer to her, grabbing her arm--
"Hey. Be my partner?" she asked softly, blushing madly.
This was always so nerve wracking for her.

Hugh cared NOT about what personality trait was best suited to post...muggles. Because Hugh was a philosopher he was inclined to believe to jobs and careers were relatively unimportant in the grand scheme of the pursuit of happiness. Jobs, rather, promoted stable social constructs and made living more efficient by splitting up trades so people had more time for themselves. A job, really, was all society's doing. Therefore, your disposition had little to nothing to do with your efficiency.
But he didn't say this because now he was contemplating the old soldier, merchant and philosopher king theory.

A housemate, which didn't immediately promise trustworthiness to Dot. A cute one, too, in that sort of floppy-haired sulky boy way. Dot gauged him through lowered eyelashes before finally flashing a smile and nodding.
A partner was a partner. How much trust did they really NEED? Besides, he might be just as honest as he said. Probably was.
"I'm exactly as trustworthy as you are. And you can count on me exactly the same amount." She held out a hand to shake on it before deciding she was NOT a hand-shaker. He got a cheerful pat on the arm instead. Promises. Ominous warnings. They were basically the same thing.
Amur's grin broke free. "Valentine? Like the day?"
Some people had really neat names here. "Pleasure to meet you!"
She shifted her bag in her arms, glancing about curiously. What were they going to get up to?

Kace was liking the new Professor during this lesson. She seemed to know what she was doing. As he got up from his seat like the Professor instructed, apparently she was gonna move the desks. He wondered what activity they were going to do? He shrugged but now onto finding a partner.
He wondered who he could trust to work with him? He looked around and then he found Puck. He grinned and said, "Puck you are my partner. No exceptions miss Prefect." he joked with her and playfully elbowed her. But seriously this activity maybe fun for the both of them. I mean remember doing the potions assignment with the hate potion. Good times. He laughed at that.

Hayden got out of the way quickly. She didn't know what the professor was going to do to the room but she didn't want to get in the way, or get injured in the process. She looked around as she moved, searching for someone who would be a good partner. Of course she would prefer if it was someone she had met before instead of a complete stranger. Someone she knew well would be even better. Someone she liked. Someone who knew a little bit about mail, probably. Hopefully.
As soon as Hayden caught sight of Kate, she smiled brightly and walked over to the girl. "Hey Kate, want to be partners?"

Right she hadn’t meant to offend her so she just nodded…it was just a part of her personality the flair for dramatics that is. So they had to partner up? Puck nearly groaned but didn’t as really almost instantly Kace had claimed her as a partner. YES! She had a group.
“Of course Kace,” she grinned and playfully elbowed him back. “Anyone want to join us? Two’s great but the more the merrier right?” She announced with a beaming face because hello…she didn’t want anyone to be left partnerless.
