Default Muggle Studies Lesson One: I'm gonna mail myself to you

Ready for your first muggle studies lesson of the term? Professor Meredith Moxley is. She's arranged the space so that rows of tables are situated around the room, two chairs at each one. All tables are facing front and the arrangement has put Professor Moxley's desk, and the large floating white board just behind it, directly in your line of sight. She is, after all, the main attraction.

You'll find your professor sitting behind her desk, humming a tune to herself as she fiddles with the bright orange vest she's wearing for this occasion. The zipper in the front appears to be stuck but NO WORRIES, she's got this covered! Why don't you go find a seat and class will be getting started shortly. Oh and don't forget to check out the board! Your first assignment is already up there.

Quote:
Welcome to Muggle Studies!

Please fill out the sticky name tag located at your table with your name, nickname, house, and year! Then slap it on your shirt! Class will be starting soon!

Lesson Progression:

They can be very expensive to send and can take a long time to get where they are going depending one where you are sending it." Yeah...that's what she knew about muggle mail. She did get letters and packages from her muggle family after all.

Oooooh, muggle mail! Janelle knew a little something about that. Unfortunately, she was a little too slow with her hand raising. One after the other, her classmates were called on. Many of the good answers had already been taken. Soooo, she decided to add to her classmates' answer. Raising her hand, Janelle gave her answer.

"You have to put stamps on your letters. The heavier the letter, the more stamps you need to use. Annnnd stamps can have pictures of lots of different people and things on them."

Peeking under her outer dark robe, Beverly fixed her top. Comfortable clothes for sure, and unfortunately no boots because the notice said trainers. Boo. Whatever, it was just for the lesson, which was moving at a steady pace.

Yes...Muggle Studies was important for loads of things...especially family-related stuff. Which sucked in her case because of stuff.

They were discussing muggle professions, though. The mail service. She knew a few things so her hand quickly joined others in the air.

"Mail is usually delivered the next day after you take it to the post office no matter how close the residence is." Owls were obviously more efficient. "And post-people work through all kinds of weather on foot and by vehicle." That must suck.

Norah grinned excitedly at Professor Moxley when she revealed the topic of the class. Cool! This class was always fun 'cause she could sometimes actually answer the questions. Considering the fact she spent every summer with her gran 'n gramps who were muggles AND they even wrote letters sometimes, the third year was BEYOND enthusiastic about today's class. BRING IT ON, PEOPLE.

Her hand shot into the air and wriggled until she was called on. "Muggles have to pay to send letters because its got to have a stamp on it or else it won't be delivered. I don't think it makes muggle mail any worse, though, 'cause they're real live people delivering the mail and not owls so they need to charge for it. Plus it means they can buy those super cool vests." She nodded at Professor Moxley's bright orange attire with a smile. "Stamps are really cool, though! They have all sorts of pictures on then and ONCE I even saw SPARKLY ones." Wizards should REALLY consider but sparkly stickers on all of their mail.

Muggle mail.

The concept made Amur smile a little. Her mother loved it, her dad hated it. Made sense, given their backgrounds, but she had heard no lack of opinions from either side on the matter. She had used it occassionally upon her mother's instruction, but she much preferred the owl way. It was cuter and she had to agree with her father, more secure.

Putting up her hand, Amur thought to give her two cents. "Its a dangerous profession. Most mailmen and mail women get chased by resident muggle dogs."

She still wasn't sure why though. She understood cats and dogs chasing owls. It was just what they did. But dogs and mailmen and women? Was it the uniform?

Kate knew some things about Muggle mail, because her parents sometimes got letters from their Muggle friends. The first year listened to the responses around her, trying hard to come up with something that hadn't already been said. She finally raised her hand, unsure if this had already been shared but wanting to at least say something anyway.

"If you have something to send to another person, you have to put it in an envelope and seal it," she said. "You write the address of their house on the envelope, and somebody brings the mail to the recipient's house." This meant that if the recipient wasn't home, they couldn't get their mail until they got home. Owls would be able to find people wherever they went.

Gabriel had taken a moment with his nametag...before sticking it to his robes. And this was simply because he was trying to build himself up to this lesson with a woman professor. Yes, he'd been doing better with this as a 'thing'...but there was still the case of this particular professor being NEW, too.

Muggle Studies Lesson 1: Muggle Mail

Why do we study muggles?
The need to blend in: When needing to coexist with society, we wouldn't want to raise suspicion by not knowing what the simplest of 'muggle' items are. [Kate Addison]
The need to trade: Muggles make important materials like zippers/buttons and grow crops that witches and wizards would need to survive; clothing, food, etc. [Amur Neverwinter]
To gain tolerance: To more efficiently coexist with what you can better understand. [Tobias Tempus]
To feel grateful: To better appreciate the power we have and to better understand the muggle struggle without things that make our lives more convenient. [Caleb Newell]
Relationships:...because friendships/love? often blur the lines between muggles and our kind. [Dima Toussaint]
To be more efficient: To know when it's right to use magic for something and when it right to just carry on in the muggle way of things. (i.e. when there isn't a spell and/or magic to carry out a certain task) [Ruby Banner]

How does MUGGLE MAIL work?
Stamps and envelopes are used.
They have to pay a fee.
They do not use owls, but person to person delivery.
They have their mail delivered at different speeds depending on the class of stamp/fee.
There is a sorting process before mail goes out (which makes it take longer)
Muggles take days off, meaning their mail doesn't run on certain days/holidays. This differs from country to country.
Sometimes addresses are written incorrectly or someone has moved from one place to another, meaning the mail system must 'return to sender'.
Different countries abide by different customs laws.

There. Now that THAT was all caught up...

Gabe considered the most recently asked question and had written out a comprehensive list...Of course, most everyone had said something about the mail that he'd written down. He smiled just a little bit to himself...JUST A LITTLE. Not a lot. Gabe didn't smile, typically.

"Uh.....Well *some throat clearing*, different countries have different holidays...Much like...the States and...England, for example. There...are different days the...mail can't...run because establishments are...closed."

Nailed it.

Hmm, Muggle mail? Dylan raised his hand. "Well, it's not delivered by owl," he answered. "I think they have it delivered just by other people?" He wasn't sure, he didn't know much about it and never thought about it before. He couldn't imagine having mail delivered by people, though. It was pretty unusual.

She had muggle neighbors growing up, so Evie was familiar with a lot of things, including how they sent mail. She raised her hand. "It takes forever," she added to the rest of the class' input. "They put it in boxes, and the mailman comes and picks it up and takes it to a factory type thing. Then they take all the mail and have to use a car to drive it all the way to its destination." That's what she had learned, anyway, without actually having to experience it.

Toby stuck his hand up in the air; he grew up pretty much as a muggle so this was a question he had no problem with.

"You can get different kinds of stamps, depending on how quick you want something to get to a place. Like first class or second class. Sometimes they're cool little pictures but usually it's a picture of the king or queen's face from the side." Which of those did the muggles have now? It was easy to lose track or forget when you immersed yourself in the wizarding community and stuff. "Also muggle letters and packages can get lost on the way. Way more than with owl deliveries."

Lost letters. Yep. So when you were waiting from an important letter from someone it was good to be able to say 'oh it must be lost in the mail' rather than... anything else.

Puck knew some things about the muggle mail system – like there were carriers, but she didn’t know everything heck she was more interested in trying to see WHY some people were taking SUCH extensive notes…and it was even more interesting when said note takers were smiling.

She did have OWLs this term…it wouldn’t hurt to see exactly what they were writing down would it? WHAT IN THE WORLD….did people know? DID THEY? She wondered and tried to hold back a laugh still, she just put the crook of her elbow to her mouth and faked a cough in order to cover up the noise.

Yep.

Prepared.

“I know as I grew up in the states that the motto for the United States Postal Service or…USPS for short, is…Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night, stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds” she even threw her hand over her chest as a means to act like she was taking the oath herself. And immediately IMMEDIATELY afterwards began the painstaking process of note taking…note copying also because HELLO people needed to know that someone was copying what they were saying into notes like it was important and sure, sure it might be…but hello? Wasn’t that like only for courtrooms? Was Banner a Scribe?

”Very good, Ms. Valentine.” You’d think she’d be using the nicknames the kids provided but really, Meredith just had them list the names for her own amusement. ”It’s quite the process but a necessary one to ensure that mail gets delivered safely from one place to another.”

SPOILER!!: Dylan and Hayden

Hayden's opinion, at least. But muggles didn't seem to like owls as much.

”By people and to letter boxes, yes! For those of you who don’t know, private letter boxes are small openings on the door of one’s house in which the post person will place your letters when they’re being delivered to you.” Meredith began to draw an illustration of what she meant on the white board, complete with stick figure postman. ” Those are not to be confused with the post boxes that are situated here and there for muggles to place their outgoing mail, mail which is collected, sorted, and then delivered by post people.”

SPOILER!!: Stamps!

”Stamps! Very good, you lot!” A smile was given and then Meredith turned to the bored again, drawing and then labeling the two stamps she’d created. One read ‘First Class’ and the second ‘Second Class.’ ”The type of stamp you want to buy depends on how quickly you’d like your mail to arrive to the person you’re corresponding with. The price depends on the how big or small the item is that you’re sending. And as Ms. Kittredge pointed out,” Adorable kid, Kittredge was, ”The pricing is necessary to help pay the hard working people who collect, sort and deliver the mail. When we consider this, the cost doesn’t seem so ridiculous.”

And Angel’s point fit nicely with the previous answers so Meredith smiled as she added, ”Precisely. The first class stamps go with the first class mail and you guessed it, second class stamps with the second class mail. And while those workin to deliver the mail try and stick to the time frame their give, circumstances sometimes make it hard.” Which was understandable.

It did indeed count. Meredith could see the kid was grasping at straws but he’d TRIED and that’s what she was concerned wit, mostly. ”Quite right, Mr. Toussaint. Envelopes are used in both cases, though they can vary in color and size, as Ms. Rawley pointed out.” Kid got an A for effort and both kids got smiles. Nice thinking. ”Ms. Addison also mentioned a good point. Muggles need to be sure to write the correct address on an envelope so that letters and parcels arrive at the right residence!” Didn’t want mail ending up in the wrong hands, though mistakes did happen on occasion.

Because snails were very slow creatures. "Their mail needs to be sorted for delivery and is either delivered to an address, or left at a place called a post office where the person the mail is for goes to pick it up. It also costs money to send mail, and packages are weighed to see how much they cost. Fragile items can be insured for in case they break enroute." Hopefully she was correct in all this because she wasn't too familiar with muggle mail, mostly using owls.

”It does indeed take longer, as Ms. Banner , Ms. Carrington and Ms. Shaklebolt explained. Of course you can pay a bit more to move along your letter or parcel faster, but there is a wait to receive them no matter what so patience is necessary.” And it was nice to see the red head was interested, if not a little perplexed by the means in which the muggles managed to send things out.

He would allow her to carry on now.

And they were talking about muggle mail now? So inefficient. He knew they were supposed to be tolerant of muggles or whatever, but sometimes it was hard when they put their post in a box...waited for someone to pick it out of the box...have it sorted...then have it shipped...and SOMETIMES it never even got there.

Owls were so much more logical. Saved time, energy, resources. Was ecologically friendly.
This kid was going to give her headaches, yeah? Like she could already see that he was the type to question all the things and for a brief moment, she was wondering if he was the one who should be teaching this class. Merlin, somebody get this kid a lectern. Just smile and nod, Meredith. That’s all you can do. Smile and nod. Heh.

Muggles were pretty hardworking in his opinion.

Was he talking too much? He probably was. Stupid tag.
”Good point, Mr. Wallace. Those working to collect, sort, and deliver the mail work extremely hard and while it can be frustrating when letters and parcels aren’t delivered within the expected amount of time, it isn’t for lack of effort on the part of the people working to do so.”

She was glad all that reading had finnally paid off.
It was interesting how much the students knew about muggle mail and Meredith was genuinely surprised, though it’d made her job that much easier. Again, how could you be upset about something like that? ”This is another good thing to consider. Those working with the mail are not only responsible for sending it out locally, but globally as well. Other means of muggle transportation help move that process along, though.” Like the airplane that Mr. Emery mentioned. And since muggle transportation wasn’t something they’d be discussing today, Moxley didn’t get too involved with what types aided the postmen and women.

He wondered if the Professor knew what he was talking about.
”Very good, Mr. Lecium. Muggle mail can be pricey to package and send but many find it worth it so that they can keep in touch with people all over.” Of course, they COULD just pick up the telephone, a lovely muggle device, but letter writing DID have a special personalized touch that the phone couldn’t quite live up to.

SPOILER!!: People mentioning Sunday and Holidays

She knew this was true cause her mom always got super nervous if anything was sent through muggle mail around the holidays. So it was a good answer.

Nailed it.

And good, several students knew about mail only being delivered on certain days of the week as well as being held up on certain holidays. ”This type of information is important for muggles to keep in mind in case they are sending time sensitive material in the mail. They’ll need to package and send it out early so that holiday and week day schedules work with getting their delivery out on time.”

Yeah. Yeah. Cause that happened sometimes.
”Yes!” No one had mentioned this before so Professor Moxley was pleased someone remembered to bring it up. ”There are definitely times when switch-ups can occur and it is important that muggles help to right the mistakes so that the letters can get to the places they were meant to go. If you think of the volume of mail being dealt with on a daily basis, it’s actually not that surprising that these types of situations happen.”

Meredith gave her a smile, though she didn’t want to go down this particular road of discussion as it got rather complicated. ”Good, Ms. Ashcroft. Not something we’ll be talking about in depth today but it certainly can be true when dealing with sending out parcels.”

These answers, these are the ones that had the most to do with what they’d be focusing on for the rest of class. Meredith grinned at each, though she wasn’t as amused with Ms. Greyvson’s performance as the girl probably thought she should be. ”Their hard work really isn’t something to joke about, honestly.” The brunette raised an eyebrow at the prefect and then turned her attention to the rest of the class. ”It is something I would like to discuss further, though. As several of your classmates mentioned, postmen and women work in all kinds of weather conditions and have to deal with both people and, on occasion, neighborhood pets. All of this is done while carrying large bags full of letters and/or large parcels that need to be delivered and most do it with a smile.” Honestly, they did.

”This is a matter of opinion, of course, but can anyone tell me what sort of personality traits would be ideal for a person working in a profession like this?”

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Cilla raised her hand.

"Someone that has a great deal of patience would be suitable. Especially with the amount of mail that needs to be sorted and the amount customers that can happen especially during peak period like Christmas," Cilla replied.

SPOILER!!: 1st question
Placing the marker she was using down, Meredith walked to the front of her desk and leaned against it. ”Let’s focus on muggle professions. There are all kinds of fields that muggles can go into to make a living but for today, we’ll be talking about the importance of communication and the way in which muggles get letters and parcels from one place to another. If anyone was paying attention to Mr. Tempus earlier, he noticed that I was wearing a post-person’s vest.” Meredith did a little turn, showcasing the item of clothing with a smile. ”Can anyone tell the class something they know about muggle mail and how it works?

Ah, so she was looking like a postman. Cool. AJ was not on her game with everything that has been going on in her life so attention to details were not her thing right now. It was more than enough trouble just getting herself to the correct classes and on time.

Oh, she knew this one. One of the great things about coming from an all muggle family was that you knew muggle things. Her hand waved in the air. ”It’s against the law to open up someone else’s mail.” Fun facts, she was full of them.

SPOILER!!: 2nd question
These answers, these are the ones that had the most to do with what they’d be focusing on for the rest of class. Meredith grinned at each, though she wasn’t as amused with Ms. Greyvson’s performance as the girl probably thought she should be. ”Their hard work really isn’t something to joke about, honestly.” The brunette raised an eyebrow at the prefect and then turned her attention to the rest of the class. ”It is something I would like to discuss further, though. ”This is a matter of opinion, of course, but can anyone tell me what sort of personality traits would be ideal for a person working in a profession like this?”

It would take a special kind of person to work in those conditions if you asked her. AJ wouldn’t be bothered by the weather, and she loved animals… no issues there either.

What could she contribute? Normally she tried to pay attention to what everybody else was saying, but her brain decided to take a vacation while she was in mourning, and the professor was just going to get what she got. Her hand was raised, so that was something. ”You would definitely need to be patient.” People that lost their patience easily would not be a good fit. Could you imagine getting bit by a dog, and then all of a sudden a down pour happens and ALL of your letters get drenched. Talk about a super bad day. That wouldn’t go over well at all with those impatient people.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Man, Adi had forgotten how easy this class could be. Well for him obviously. He was half blood and half of his life he had lived only among them... he still did , actually. Yep. But despite that, he could still be seen making little notes as Moxley spoke.

The next question was up and the Hufflepuff's hand went up once more. "They have to have tolerance for rude people and animals especially dogs. People's pets can get really nasty sometimes.'' Poor post persons... being chased my animals and what not.

This Professor was earning major brownie points here. The topic was appropriate and so legit, AND she liked his answer. Win! Win! Zeke beamed, happily listening and participating now. Yep, he was going to keep the subject, and hopefully ace it like the muggle that he really was at times.

Regarding personal characteristics, he could think of many... but one kinda struck him as super important - patience aside.

Hand raised, Zeke offered his opinion. "Endurance, Professor... it's hard work, so being physically and mentally ready helps."

So far Hady couldn't complain about this lesson at all. It was a topic she knew and her answers were pretty good. Even with knowing the topic though in her hand her quill remained so she could take notes as answers were given.

The next question came and the Slytherin thought about it for a brief moment before raising her hand. "Someone that could handle all types of weather?" Cause you know the heat or freezing cold, plus rain or snow and wind could really affect some people that weren't used to it.

not throwing away my shot | Slytherpuff | roll for initiative | woof you ❤

What kind of person would be able to work as a postperson? Not Hayden, that was who. Someone who was able to deal with all kinds of people and not get too annoyed or punch them in the face. Someone who could withstand that kind of weather, or run fast if they were chased by a dog. She heard her classmates give all kinds of good answers. She had a lot of answers she could give but when she raised her hand, her mind strayed slightly away from the whole issue of the weather. Hopefully that was okay. "They have to have a good sense of direction, so they don't get lost when they're looking for houses." She imagined it would be very easy to get lost if they were just sent to search for a house. They would need a good map or something. What if they did get lost? Then you'd never get your mail and they would get fired or something. Owls rarely got lost, they were just better all around.

Amur made a very big mental note to say goodbye to the Professor when she left, and hello when she came back for their next lesson. She would definitely be coming back. Professor Moxley asked good questions and seemed a much more leveled headed and reliable resource on muggles than either of her parents.

That being said, she had heard her father say something along the lines about the type of people that worked in this Profession. Usually it was when he was having his morning coffee, scouring over the freshly delivered newspaper as he watched the street from their front window.

What was it again? Her hand went up.

" 'They have long legs, a strong back and thick skin.' " There was something about a few loose nuts and bolts too, but Amur thought it best to keep that to herself.

And what was the other word her father used? Desperate. That was it.

Amur looked at Professor Moxley's smile. Nope. Best to keep that one behind closed teeth too.

Postmen and women did have hard jobs. Evie felt a little sorry for them in the fact that they had no idea that magic even existed. But that was the way the world was. She thought about what kind of traits she would need to be a postwoman and then she raised her hand.

"They would need a lot of stamina to keep walking around with that heavy bag all day, and a lot of body strength, too." If they had to fight off big dogs, too, that would come in handy.

Yes Benny was paying attention. And yes, the half blood did have some knowledge of the muggle mail system. But he had opted to remain quiet and listen to everyone else was saying. A lot of his classmates, not surprisingly including Angel, seemed to know quite a bit about it. So he jotted down this and that into his notes, adding to it as Professor Moxley spoke up as well.

Onto the next question and the Gryffindor finally decided to raise his hand. "They would likely need to have good knowledge of the area to which they are delivering." Not just to ensure they didn't get lost but to know where the streets were in general and how the addresses ran.
