The beginning of a new term is finally here and the cool September air is lightly rolling in through the windows cracked open on the south side of the classroom. The classroom is set up quite normally, with several rows of desks, split into three columns for easy access to the front of the room. In the front of the room is a standard chalkboard with a slightly taller than normal wooden table a few feet in front of it. To the left is the professor's desk.
At that desk sits the new Charms Professor, Pierson Fuller, his feet comfortably propped up on his desk as he finishes his post-breakfast apple and watches the students file in for Charms class.
Say hello if you wish, but class will begin shortly!
OOC: Class has begun! If you are late, please don't announce it. Just pretend you've been here all along!
The question WAS should he throw the ENTIRE box of every flavour beans up in the air (and risk it exploding if he totally failed at the spell) or open the packet and throw one bean at a time and practice on that if he super promised he wouldn't eat one (but actually would totally eat them).
He'd try the pack first. Less temptation. See? SEE HOW MATURE HE WAS BEING?
Right. Slow it down first, then stop it. Cool. Cool cool cool. NO BIG.
Tobias readied his wand in his right hand and chucked the packet of sweets up in the air. Mayyyyyyyyyyyyyybe a little TOO lightly.
"Arrest-... oh."
They'd fallen back to the desk before Tobias had even had a chance to say the incantation. Grrrr. Right. He'd just had to chuck them RIGHT up in the air. Right now. Okay. Please don't essplode.
Aaaaaaaaaaaand CHUCKTHESWEETSINTHEAIR.
"Arresto Momentum!" Tobias called out, feeling slightly panicked and just trying to get the spell cast quickly because he didn't want the sweets to go everywhere and he HAD chucked them up a bit too forcefully.
But the sweets DID stop.
And that's the thing.
They STOPPED. He was supposed to slow it down, not stop it completely. Grrrr. Toby even leaned riiiiiiiiiiiight up close to see if maybe it was just moving but reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally slowly. But no. He'd stopped it.
Tobias picked the box out from the air where it was suspended in front of him and thought. WELL, this was a good thing. Because he HAD managed the spell, right? That was the bright side. Now he just had to focus on slowing it down instead of stopping it. Toby hadn't FAILED, he was just doing things in a different order.
And on that positive note, Tobias threw the box of sweets in the air again and got ready to cast the spell.

And he gave her a cheesy grin. Had to have the best mate's girlfriends permission and all, yada, yada, yada.
So...the gummy worm thing wasn't happening. They fell far too quickly and she felt sort of conflicted about using them in case they fell on the floor. That would be a waste of perfectly good candy, yeah? Yeah. Time for some brainstorming. Maybe she could toss up a-

"You want to toss Alec around?" Raised eyebrows for you, leprechaun. "Boyfriends need to keep their feet on the ground unless they're quidditching or mattress surfing, okay?" GRIN. So no throwing around her hair whipper. Sorry, Tag.
He did have a good idea with the paper, though. The blonde took a piece of her own and decided to make a paper airplane, figuring it'd be easy to work with. After some careful folding, the seventeen year old smiled at the finished product. Not too shabby.
Wand in hand, Ella carefully aimed the airplane upwards and let it fly, watching as it headed towards the ceiling. When it began to fall, she aimed her wand and concentrated on slowing it down. Intent was important and all that. "Arresto Momentum!" SQUINT.
Oh! Oh, it was slowing! Did anyone else see that too? Pretty cool. Now if she could just stop it completely she'd be all set.
Fine. She practiced the incantation. What was next? Claudette lazily lifted her green eyes to the board again. Slow the momentum of the object. Hmm. what sort of object should she use?
Claudette looked around the immediate vicinity of her desk and glanced at a couple of her neighbors to better decide what she wanted to use. Her textbook was a bit to heavy to just throw up in the air and her quill was far too light. Maybe she should crumple up her notes into a ball?
She picked up her bottle of lilac ink and glanced around to see Eliza sitting on the other side of the room, giving her a smirk as she thought about what might happen if the spell didn't work properly on this bottle.. and how reminiscent that would be. Perfect. That's what she'd use..
Picking up her wand, the sixth year tossed her bottle of ink into the air, her eyes following it as it started to fall. Focusing on slowing it, not stopping it, the blonde waved her wand at it. "Arresto Momentum!" It slowed down a great deal, but it was still descending to the floor..

So far. so good. She was totally making Professor Facial Hair proud, right? She'd told him Charms was her favorite class, so now it was time to live up to that. Giving herself a mental high five, she decided it was time to move on.
Time to make this bad quill stop completely.
Turning the quill about in her free hand a few times, she played over the whole thing in her mind and then tossed the quill into the air again. It was rather remarkable that she hadn't stuck herself in the eye with it, especially considering she'd decided against wearing her glasses for this lesson. Not for Charms. Not ever again. Nope. "Arresto Momentum!" BAM. Stopped. She was triumphant.
Did he see? Did Professor Fuller see that one of his two favorite students had totally succeeded?
Mr. Unicorn: Kim's daughter: Jenn's sister : MILKSHAKES: Lita Daley: The Sun: Its so Fluffy!
HEEEY! Step two complete.
Smiling to himself Tag was ready to get started on step three when Ella finally answered him about tossing Alec across the room.
SPOILER!!: Ella XD
BLINK.
"You want to toss Alec around?" Raised eyebrows for you, leprechaun. "Boyfriends need to keep their feet on the ground unless they're quidditching or mattress surfing, okay?" GRIN. So no throwing around her hair whipper. Sorry, Tag.
He figured she would say no to the idea. It was worth the shot, though. When she repeated his own question Tag raised an eyebrow and nodded his head several times. "Darn. I was almost certain you would be okay with me tossing him across the room. Thanks though." He said still smiling at her.
So, glancing back up at the chalkboard Tag read the last step again. He had to completely stop the object. Seemed simple enough, yeah?
Tossing the paper ball into the air Tag waved his wand and "Ar-Rest-Oh Momentum!" Ohhhh. Tag's head followed his object as he watched it descend back onto the classroom floor. Furrowing his eyebrow a bit Tag got out of his seat and grabbed the paper ball. Once again he tossed the paper ball back into the air and said, "Ar-Rest-oh Mo-Ment-um!" That was right, yes?
With slightly quick reactions Tag waved his wand a few times. Maybe too many times. Before something terrible could happen Tag put his wand on his desk and picked up the fallen piece of paper again.
How many tries would this take? "I'll get it this time." He told himself. Sighing rather longly he tossed the paper ball back into the air, waved his wand ONCE, and said, with some power, "Ar-Rest-oh Mo-Ment-um!!"
And the paper ball was stuck in mid air. Tag raised his hand up in triumph.
elephant-astic•wanderlust•stay in the ninedaaays the original Taco Belle•look at the flowers✿
Ella simply shook her head at Tag, the smile never leaving her face. He totally knew she'd say no. Silly Tag, boyfriends aren't for throwing.
Paper airplanes were, though. The seventeen year old picked hers up and eyed it curiously. She'd need to stop it completely this time around and she was pretty sure she could do it. It'd just take some concentrating is all. Concentrating that would have been a whole lot easier had the sass-master not brought up Alec. Ella's green eyes found him and she smiled a little, watching him work. That...was probably creepy though, right? Yeah. She needed to stop that.
Eyes on her paper airplane again, she did her best to focus. ...Focusing. ...Focused.
Raising her wand , the badger aimed the paper airplane upwards and let it go, concentrating on what she wanted to happen. As it fell back down towards her desk, the blonde waved her wand and said clearly, "Arresto Momentum!"
And the air plane stopped. It had stopped completely and Ella felt pretty good about having done it correctly. She smiled a little and sat up a little straighter, wondering if Professor Handsome had seen. She was pretty okay at this Charms thing, yeah?

If she could slow down the knut's fall, she could totally stop it completely, right? The stopping kinda seemed like it would be easier since it was just stopping, when to slow it down you kinda had to think about how fast it was going and then think about what would be slower than that. It required more effort. Or at least, in her head it did. It made sense in her mind.
So once again, Penelope tossed the knut high in the air and waved her wand. "Arresto Momentum."
...hey, why was it still moving?!
"Arresto Momentum!" she said again quickly, but it was no use and the knut hit the desk once more with a small clink! sound. Ugh. Lame.
Picking it up, she eyed it again. "You better stop this time," she muttered before tossing it up once more. "Arrest Momen- No, ArrestO Momentum."
Clink!
.......Stupid knut.
Focus, Penelope. Focus.
She grabbed it and tossed it up a third time. "Arresto Momentum!" Her wand was waved....and the knut stopped in mid-air.
YES. Finally. Penelope stood up and snatched it out of the air then sat down again, pleased that she'd finally succeeded.

"Ah-rest-OH Mo-ment-toom! Ah-rest-Oh Mo-ment-tEHM! Ah-rest-oh Mo-men-TUHM!" Cutty was slowly working his way out of getting used to pronouncing his vowels the way he always had for the spell. Meanwhile, trying to get the images of peoples objects hitting them in the face, which was HARD! Especially when he caught a glimpse of that Duvessa kid's hairbrush swat her in the face. But then, he witnessed her success. Well, if she could do it...!
The boy had taken his school bag and started removing objects from it, a quill, some parchment, Jezzabelle's prized possession History of Hogwarts book, his own school book, and a chocolate frog still in packet. Looking at the somewhat random array, Cutty chose the quill firstly knowing it would fall slowest, but not as erratically as the parchment. This would give him time to really, REALLY concentrate.
He took the quill and tossed it into the air, where it took its sweet time as it obeyed the laws of gravity. "Arresto Momentoom!" He flinched not liking the way he'd ended it and will gave in to wonder as to whether or not it would be effective. Cutty watched as the quill continued to slowly, slowly make its way to the ground.
Had it worked? One more try just for good measure, but the child was already starting to lose patience with himself. The feather quill glided down slowly and Cutty fired at it watching as the object seemed to freeze then continue down it's path as though it were suspended in a jelly. Cutty's smile could not help but look monkeyish and mischievous, but he was definitely happy with the result.
Alright this was the last time Kace was gonna try this. He almost had a good attempt he just needed to focus more. He was gonna do it on the pencil ONE more last time. He threw the pencil up in the air, hopefully no one was around......
Then he said the spell with the flick of his wand, "Arresto Momentum!!" he said with concentration and then the pencil STOPPED. AWESOME!!! That was sooo cool! He made the pencil stop motion just before it hit the ground. Maybe he needed to do it more quickly next time. Yeah that might help. Alright let's find a different object.
He scanned in his backpack and noticed he had a candy in there. Maybe it would be harder to stop since it is heavier than a pencil. Why not?? He threw the candy up and then aimed his wand and flicked it and said, "Arresto Momentum!" and then it stopped in mid air.
O__O. He stopped there wide eyed and had a huge grin on his face. He was getting good at this
After practicing the incantation a few more times Marissa picked up her bag off the floor and started rummaging through it, Hmm I don't want anything heavy to fall on my head, she thought to herself and she glanced at her textbook. She continued rummaging through her bag and finally decided to try using the little mirror she had tucked away.
Well here it goes, she thought to herself as she tossed it in the air. "Arresto Momemtum." she said waving her wand. Please work, please work please work, she thought and concentrated on it slowing down.
She looked at the mirror falling it had slowed down but not enough, the next thing she new her mirror landed on the ground with a CRASH and shattered.
"Oh no!" she cried out, as she scooted down to pick up the pieces of broken glass. She hadn't thought about what would happen if she didn't slow it down enough making a mental note to not use anything breakable again.
Adelaide was proud of herself, so she was going to make it a bit more challenging. She put the sickle back in her pocket and reached for her bag. She dug around inside until she pulled out a little stuffed mouse toy she played fetch with Oreo with.
Adelaide threw the mouse up in the air, before aiming her wand at it and saying, "Arresto Momentum!" It slowed down as it fell towards her desk. She threw it once, quite a bit higher this time. She pointed her wand at it and said "Arresto Momentum."
It must have been too high or to far to her side because it didn't work this time. The mouse was very close to hitting someone else. "Look out!" It was only a stuffed mouse toy, but still no one wanted to get hit with random things in the middle of a lecture. "Arresto momentum!" She managed to slow it once more as it fell to the desk in front of the person next to her.

Marissa stood up this day could not get any worse she just got hit with someone's stuffed mouse on top of breaking her mirror. What else could go wrong? she thought to her self with a huff.
She picked up the toy mouse and turned around, "I think someone dropped this. " she said holding out the mouse.
Okay, so he had the words down and since everyone else was practically done getting the wand movement down, Chris flicked his wand a bit, keeping an eye on everyone else to make sure he was doing it the same way they had been doing it. Once that was down, he realized he needed to find something to actually THROW into the air.
People seemed to be finding things from all over the place and while he saw Tag throwing a paper ball on the other side of the room, Christopher didn't think that would be nearly as much as throwing..."My shoe!" He smiled at himself for being smart enough to figure that much out. He placed his wand down on the desk and removed his shoe, hoping no one in the area would complain about the smell. He'd put it back on once he was done anyhow.
Finally, he threw the shoe up in the air right above him and reached for his wand that wasn't there?!"Arresto Momentum?" He stared up at the shoe and wondered if maybe his just saying the incantation would manage to stop it from coming at him but instead it just fell straight down and hit his forehead hard. "Oooow." Leave it to Chris to forget to actually use his wand.

Hogwarts was awesome and great and all that, but Benzi was really beginning to think the Sorting Hat had been wrong, like that girl from the feast had said. Lessons were sort of interesting but there were TOO many and Benzi was tired. His last owl from Mummy had been a package of books that he read almost all the time, since the library wanted money and he was NOT going to waste his on it.
Only if he really needed to get in there for his homework or something.
As it were, he'd spent the majority of last night reading and today's lesson was just not agreeing with him. NOT sleeping, yet very close, Benzi wiped drool from the corner of his lips as people began waving their wands and casting spells and generally being noisy.
... What were they learning again? Eyes flitting to the board, Benzi waited for his vision to settle on the words and he read them out loud "arresto momentum". Hmm. That wasn't so bad.
Taking his want out of his holster, Benzi looked around to see what other people were doing when he spotted Cutty. Grabbing his bag Benzi made a beeline for the Slytherin and sat down next to him just as his feather landed on the table
"D'you manage it?" Benzi asked as he took out a scrunched up piece of parchment from his bag. So he had his thingamagig, like other people did. He waved his wand a bit, like other people did. But now what?

Was she done humouring the Professor now? Yup, spell time. First thing's first to slow it down. That wasn't so bad. The frog wouldn't go splat from a light run in with the ground. Could they still use the window...you know...for added effect...? Or was the window completely out of the question? She didn't mind using a levitating spell to reclaim her chocolate frog after dropping it, in fact, that would have been more spell practice, no?
Lex snatched the chocolate frog off the desk, not sitting in a more formal position at all, so yeah, still with feet kicked up and everything, then eyed the ground.
A well placed throw, giving enough distance so she'd have time to cast the spell. Hmmm...Alexa tossed the frog toward the ceiling, watching for a moment as it climbed higher and higher through the air. She would wait until it was on it's way down again, then....
"Arresto Momentum!"
Just as with the seeds, the chocolate frog slowed significantly. It was almost like it wasn't moving at all 'cept she could see that it still was and as slow as it was going, it was making it's way toward the floor. When it got close enough, she reached over and swiped it. This way she wouldn't have to move toward picking it up.
Stopping was next, yeah?

Minerva had calmed from first thinking yet another class was going to force beards on them. This was a nice thing to know that he wasn't going to do that. No he was going to actually teach. WOW a professor that was going to do what he was suppose to without first humiliating anyone. Not that Flamsteed didn't teach, no Minerva liked him, just not his jokes that always seemed to end up pointing her in a bad place whether he meant it or not.
Anyway she focused back on the lesson as she put up her hand she heard a very loud girl say about throwing someone out the window. Mikey. Her blue eyes snapped back to see that it was the boy from the summer. She had met, he was really nice why would the girl want to throw him out the window. "I don't think we need to throw anyone out any windows." She said politely to the younger student. Especially someone like Mikey Now she could name at least one in the room they could.
Minerva turned back to the professor, "Many have said quidditch sir, but what about Flying class? Could it be used in teaching flying in general. When students are new they could easily fall off. This could help so they don't harm themselves when they fall." She just didn't want to give the same answer, so it was just a thought really.
Hearing someone speak up in his defence, Mikey turned around to BEAM at Minnie.
See that Kettleburn he had a Prefect too. And even better, his knew that he was alive. HAHAHAHA!!
"Thanks Minnie."

He didn't LIKE being unpleasant, but he really didn't like disruption in his class. "Don't make me separate you two." EYES. LOOKS FOR YOU.
Aaaand moving on.
Turning back around, the charms professor picked up the piece of chalk again and began writing on the board as he continued to speak, "Today we will be learning how to slow and how to stop an object's speed. We will first begin with learning the incantation and wand movement." Stepping away from the chalk board, he revealed what he wrote:
"Repeat after me: Ah-REST-oh... Mo-MENT-um... Good. Quite simple, yes?" Pierson unholstered his wand and tossed the piece of chalk several feet in the air, over the head of the male Slytherin Prefect's head. "Arresto Momentum!" he said with a short wave of his wand towards the white stick of chalk, and it froze, just a few inches above the Prefect's head. With another flick of his wand, he summoned it back and caught it in his free hand.
I want you all to try it out now. First, practice the incantation without your wand, but that should be quite easy. Then, do what I just did. Toss something in the air, I don't care what: a pencil, a textbook, your tablemate -- just joking, Kettleburn -- and first try to slow it from hitting the ground too fast. Then throw it up in the air again and completely stop it. Don't slow it, stop it. Don't let it hit the ground. Make sure your intentions are clear. Ready, set, go." Piers tucked his wand away and turned to write the instructions on the board:
1) practice the incantation
2) slow the momentum of the object
3) completely stop the momentum of the object
OOC: This task must be done in no less than three posts. I'm not picky about how you divide them up. More is fine, but you'll only get points for three. You have about 36 hours to complete this task before we move on to the next!
WHY WAS HE GETTING INTO TROUBLE?

Now onto practicing.

More wandering. And seemingly innocent eraser throwing. Except for not. Pierson stood behind Zahra, out of her sight and watched her attempt (hah) "attempt" the spell. Once the last eraser hit the Toussaint kid, Pierson flicked his wand and sent it buzzing back to Zahra until it pegged her in the forehead. Then he put his wand away. "Arresto Momentum, dear. "Ah - REST - oh Mo - MENT - um, ah - REST - oh mo - MENT - um." And let's put it altogether. "Arresto Momentum."
Adelaide felt horrible as she saw the mouse bounce off of the other girl's head. "That's mine." She stated feebly as she grabbed it from the younger students hand. "Sorry 'bout that. I misjudged my toss."
She took the mouse and went back to sit, figuring out the best way to change her approach so that she didn't let the mouse hit someone else again. Adelaide turned her body and opted for dropping the mouse from next to her desk.
She stood up and dropped the mouse, pointing her wand at it and saying "Arresto momentum." She was excited when she thought it had stopped, but then it slowly fell back to the ground. Almost there.
Marissa shrugged as the girl took the mouse back, "At least it was soft and not breakable. " she said to her as she motioned to her broken mirror.
Turning back to her bag she looked through it again looking for anything she could use to try again. She finally found something to use and pulled out her brush.
Here goes again, she thought as she tossed the brush in the air. "Arresto momentum." she said concentrating on slowing it down. She looked up at her brush and saw it slowly floating down towards her. She smiled and pulled it from the air glad she finally got it.
Okay, so that hadn't gone too well. Looking around him, Chris checked to see if anyone had seen that he got hit but luckily it seemed as though no one even noticed him. 'Perfect.'
Picking up his smelly shoe in one hand and his wand in his other, he went over the pronunciation of the word a few more times in his head just to make sure he hadn't forgotten it yet. "Okay. I can do this. Ah-RES-to Mo-MENT-tum. I won't hit myself again. Nope." If Elise were here, he'd be trying to impress her so he just pretended she was watching him from the other side of the class and tried again.
Christopher threw the shoe up in the air, waved his wand, and shakily mumbled something that sounded like "Aristotle Movements." When the shoe continued to fall towards him, he tried to duck out of the way but tripped over his foot and fell to the ground. "Ooow! Ugh." Checking to see why he fell, he saw that the shoelaces on the shoe that was still on his foot had gotten untied.
Mumbling to himself, Chris picked up the shoe one last time and focused on the word, the wand, and the shoe. 'I can do this.' He threw the shoe up above his head with all his force and quickly waved his wand, closed his eyes, and distinctly said, "ARRESTO MOMENTUM."
When he opened his eyes, the shoe was frozen about six inches above his head. Christopher looked around to see if anyone could see what had just happened. "I DID IT!!!"

"I mean, a guitar pick won't really hurt if it hits me in the face, will it?" Stubbornness was showing, alright. "And...what I'm going to hit you with won't hurt either if ever you can't do the charm on time....which I doubt would happen." He was good with charmwork, she knew that.
Oh, and the thing she was going to toss at him? She had to rummage her bag first. ...And found....a hair clip. Beezus waved it in front of the Slytherin.
"You're not putting my eye out with your hairclip, Bee." West said. Nope. Nope. He was not down for her chucking anything. Thanks but no thanks, Miss Prefect. He didn't want any part of that. So if she wanted to work with him, no violence. Simple. "And tossing it in the air gives more time to react as well, for practicing reasons."
He flicked the guitar pick up in the air again and caught it on the back of his thumb.
"Do you wanna start or shall I? Slowing it first right?"

Queen of Typos | The OTHER OTHER Roro | WICKED is Good
She hadn't continued practicing just yet. Instead she just sat back and watched the others practice and try the spell. It didn't look that hard and she might have forgotten herself while she stalked the others. Then when the cute professor said that they were doing well, she just blinked and snapped out of whatever she'd been caught up in.
Straightening in her seat, the fifth year rummaged in her bag trying to find something to throw in the air.... or at someone? That could work, too, yeah? It wouldn't be pointy or sharp. maybe. Her bag was full of stuffs and she got a little bit distracted by them but finally retrieved a paper clip. Not dangerous nor too valuable.
Pushing her seat a bit backwards, Cassia held the clip in her left hand while she gripped the wand with her left hand.
After repeating the incantation a couple of times in her head, she finally tossed the clip upwards, and with a slight angle to her side, she uttered, "Arresto Momentum!" And wand movement.
She kept her eyes glued on the little thing and nodded approving and glad seeing that it slowed down before hitting the floor. Good.
Not to try and make it freeze. She got up and went to retrieve it from where it fell a feet away.

Watch out for those flying erasers."
She was only making this worse for herself. Pierson held his hands behind his back and continued to walk around the room...
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaait a MINUTE! WHAT?!?!?
PROFESSOR DID WHAT???
He .... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Zahra wasn't mad. She'd been hit by worse. Lots worse. Plus, she LIKED when Professors played with her. She stood up and CHUCKED her last eraser at Professor Fuller. "THINK FAST PROFESSOR. ARRESTO MOMENTUM IT!" HAHAHA! Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!
SPOILER!!: Goody2Shoes Toussaint

Now onto practicing.
"Ah-REST-oh Mo-ZAHRA!!" He raised his hands to as a shield as a number of erasers were pegged at his head. "WE'RE SUPPOSED TO BE JUST PRACTICING THE INCANTATION FIRST!"
MERLIN!
Michael was just about to pick up the erasers and peg them straight back at his BFF but the Professor beat him to it.
He bit the inside of his cheek to stop himself from bursting into laughter because the Professor was right there and he was supposed to be practicing but as soon as the man left, he was so going to laugh in her face.
"Ah - REST - oh Mo - MENT - um, ah - REST - oh mo - MENT - um." And let's put it altogether. "Arresto Momentum."
IGNORING YOU SO HARD TOUSSAINT. YOU DO NOT EXIST. Zahra waved her wand around, deciding to be a lady all of a sudden. Dainty little wand movements. "ArrESto MoMENtum." TEEHEEHAHAHAGIGGLEGIGGLESNORTZ.

Okay, that was enough practicing. There was only so many times Sophie could wave her wand without using an incantation and use an incantation without waving her wand. At some point, which was this point, she had to put them both together.
But first...
She needed to figure out something to toss into the air. She didn't want to choose something too light, because it might just float to the ground in slow motion anyway. If she slowed that down any more, it might just stop forever. She didn't want anything too heavy either. She'd never be able to pick up a desk or a whole person!
She glanced down at the ground and tapped her foot. Hmm... OH! HER FOOT! No, no--she wasn't going to toss her foot into the air. That'd be sort of...awful. Her foot was in a shoe, though! She bent down and removed one of her shoes. This was what she'd practice on.
Claudette watched the slowly descending ink bottle for a few more seconds before she pointed her wand at it again. It was moving slow enough for her to just catch it in case she needed to before it hit the floor, but she wanted to try the spell first. She couldn't remember if she had ever used it to completely stop anything, just slow it down tremendously.
Focusing on stopping it in her mind, she waved her wand. "Arresto Momentum!" It was still moving slowly downward and Claudette blinked at it in disbelief. Why didn't it stop? She tried again. "Arresto Momentum!" Still moving.
Claudette took a deep breath and closed her eyes for a moment, picturing the ink bottle in her mind coming to a complete stop. When she opened them, she crouched down next to her desk as the ink bottle was very low to the floor at this point. "Arresto Momentum!" Two inches from the floor, the ink bottle stopped in midair. Finally. The 16 year old plucked the bottle from the air, straightened up, and found her seat again.

Sophie gripped the shoe in her left hand and her wand in her right hand. Okay, so all she had to do was toss this shoe, quickly wave her wand toward it, and then call out the incantation. That seemed fairly easy...if she could just get it all together. She shrugged to herself then tossed the shoe into the air.
Her only problem was that she just couldn't get her wand waving started right after the shoe toss. She fumbled a little until finally, just as the shoe hit the ground with a thud, she waved her wand toward it and called out, "Arresto Momentum!" It was a moot point, though. The shoe was already lifeless at her feet. It didn't even have any air to it by the time she'd cast.
*SIGH*
Again, she gripped her shoe in her left hand and her wand in her right hand. She was going to do this... She was! She tossed the shoe into the air again, this time a little higher, and then began waving her wand wildly about. "Arresto Momentum! ARRESTO MOMENTUM!" ... Nothing.
"My wand's broken," she finally grumbled with frustration.
