The last class of the day was in session when Gnaeus made way to the room off the great hall. Soon the young wizards and witches would be off for the day, but hopefully not too tired to learn about the art of dueling. He pulled key from his pocket, unlocked the doors, and pushed them. After bewitching them open, he made way to the center of the room, where he stood and waited for the students to arrive.

"Yeah!" he cheered, pumping his fist in the air excitedly, "Did you see that?!" he asked her, bouncing on the balls of his feet.
Maddy bounced into action, " Protego!" She yelled, the second after he flinched to cast his flipping curse. The shilding charm worked "Stupify" she yelled back and the impact sent her flying back! " Lets try some more" Maddy suggested.
Eino took his wand and waved it for the girl. "I ought to do it with my wand." There was no other way to do it, was there? "You can, umm, do it differently, if you wish to, though." He replied and began to fold up his sleeves in preparation. "I will cast the Knockback Jinx and you protect, then we exchange roles." He said and retracted a few steps, positioning himself three or so meters away from the girl.
"Ready?" He pointed his wand and drew a squiggly line, saying "Flipendo!". An orange light shot from Eino's wand and flew toward the Gryffindor girl.
Selina was about to draw her wand to prepare for their duel as she spoke, "Alright then Eino. Should we count down from three or-?" But before she could even finish her sentence a stream of orange light was hurling toward her head. Her hand flew up with her wand as she shouted due to reflex, "Protego!" The orange light dissipated before her eyes and she caught her breath.
Looking up in shock at Eino she said, "Merlin, Eino. I was NOT expecting that. Give a girl some warning."

She was alright, because she did cast at him soon afterwards.
And the light from the spell got reflected away from him. Thank you, shield. One wand motion and the shield was totally off. "Do you want to practice Protego before we move on to the next? I think we're ready to try a Hurling Hex...," if she was up for the challenge.
AND HE DIDN'T EVEN ASK IF SHE WAS OKAY?!
Truth be told, he was actually surprised that the Knockback Jinx had hit her, he thought she was more than ready with her shield. Can you imagine if they'd gone with the Stunning Spell first? Considering he'd gotten it right? Smirk.
He'd already had his spell up. Phooey. She would've liked to see him fall on his bum for distracting her. Even if he hadn't purposely distracted her. Or had he? Vashti didn't really know. She just knew she wouldn't let her focus wander this time. If this was a real duel, she probably would've been disarmed and would have lost, and she REALLY didn't like losing.
Focus.
Did she want to practice her shield? "I just practiced a few minutes ago," she answered with a shrug. Her practice had been on her own, of course, without any spells to protect herself from, but she figured it would protect her against a Knockback Jinx. "We can just move on to the Hurling Hex if you like." And if her shield wasn't strong enough for that, then she could backtrack and make sure she could even defend herself from a simple Flipendo before trying the hex again.

The Ravenclaw then took a step closer to Gideon. "Do you want to practice anything else?" The shield charm was the most difficult one for both of them. But again, he seemed really in control with it. "And... why do you say 'ye'?" The question just came out genuinely. Her curiosity surfaced at last.
Gideon lowered his wand once the spell was caught in her shield, the boy deciding in the end to slip it back into his robe pocket for the time being. "Ye did good though, we both did," he commented truthfully. Everything had worked out pretty well and there had only been one incident where one of them landed on their backsides.
"Hmm maybe we should take a break...wait for the leaders next move," he suggested figuring they had done enough praticing for the moment. No sense tiring themselves out on the first day. The boy had his head down for a few moments only looking up as she asked her next question.
"Its...um...kinda the remnant of my scottish accent," he answered trying not to look sheepish. "That and aye. Though around breaks it usually is thicker especially when I spend time around my Gran-da."
Selina was about to draw her wand to prepare for their duel as she spoke, "Alright then Eino. Should we count down from three or-?" Looking up in shock at Eino she said, "Merlin, Eino. I was NOT expecting that. Give a girl some warning."
Eino watched as Selina successfully blocked the Knockback Jinx and applauded her for it. "But you did so very fantastically." He reassured her with a nod. Plus, it was like this in real dueling, right? There was no countdown or warning, so it was impressive that she was able to block it so suddenly.
"Now, you try hitting me." Eino said as he prepared to cast the Shield Charm.
Harlow...that was a unique name. Kourt flashed another smile towards the girl. Better know your partner's name; made things a bit more real.
"Just fine." She replied as she stood back up. "I've had worse while practicing dance, but at least we know we can cast the jinx." And that was the exciting part, that they were being successful in magic.
Kourt moved her wand in the squiggly motion. "Flipendo!" She cast.
The tight worried look eased off Harlow's face as the girl told her she was fine. That was good. It wasn't a great start to a friendship if you injured the person. "I love dancing," she giggled. And Kennedy was a great partner, but she didn't want to say that in case he heard and got distracted.
Harlow stood ready for the jinx, "Protego!" her voice wobbled as she spoke and a light mist flew out of her wand. It was a shield, but a weak one and the jinx broke through and knocked her back and few steps, but she stayed upright. "That was better." she commented. At least she could cast a shield.

Selina shook her head in amusement at Eino. He had a point... in a weird kind of way, but she would run with it. So shrugged her shoulders at him and said, "Okay then, just next time... give me a little warning... please." The last please was a little exaggerated to make her point.
Then she backed up and drew her wand, "Alright... one-two-three! Flipendo."

Then she backed up and drew her wand, "Alright... one-two-three! Flipendo."
Eino nodded in agreement. Next time he would give her a little warning, then. Maybe a countdown like she had intended. When he saw her draw her wand he drew his, prepared to cast the charm. Wave the wand and recite the incantation. Eino watched closely as she cast the spell, then shifted his attention to the the orange light, watching it closely as it approached him. "Protego!" He said waving his wand horizontally and back. The orange light hit a nearly invisible blue shield and shattered. Nonetheless, Eino was not able to fully detain the jinx and the blow pushed him two steps back. That wasn't bad at all.
He took a deep breath and prepared to cast the jinx in return. "Read?" He asked and drew his wand. "One, two, three... Flipendo!"
Kurumi shut her eyes tight, half expecting to hear the same thud from earlier from Kennedy's bum making contact with the floor. But that noise never came. Instead she heard his timid voice suddenly boom as he said the incantation and her eyes flew open.
"Brillia--- EEK!" She hadn't entirely expected him to counter with the same spell. Kurumi's wand twirled between her fingers and she pivoted on her left foot, her black hair swinging around her waist. "Protego!" Phew, just in the nick of time, although she was pushed back a few inches as the spell her only partially formed shield. He was quick. "I wasn't expecting that," she laughed.
Time to give these other spells a try, right?
Looking at this as a more playful game rather then an actual duel, Kurumi found the balance in her mind that she needed to actually believe and want to attack-ish. Throw her in the middle of a battle field and she probably would crawl under a rock for a while. Kurumi flicked her wand in his direction. "Everte Statum!"
Something burst from her wand. Whether or not the spell had been performed correctly was another story. Hopefully it didn't turn him into a newt...or melt him. Kurumi was notorious for melting things when she tried new spells...
o_________________O
Oh MAN!
Guessing by her EEK, Kurumi had not been ready for his spell. "I'm SO sorr-," Kennedy began, his cheeks blushing furiously, but he was cut short as the Gryffindor shot back at him. Kennedy reacted faster than last time, "Protego!"
He looked up with wide eyes, but then his lips stretched into a grin. "You're fast," he laughed, and then flicked his wand towards her, "Everte Statum!" Could she block that one too? Maybe, yes.
He'd already had his spell up. Phooey. She would've liked to see him fall on his bum for distracting her. Even if he hadn't purposely distracted her. Or had he? Vashti didn't really know. Huh?
She practiced it? Mmmm...she may have not been prepared before, so it may not have given her the right amount of time to protect herself, right? Or she hadn't thought of protecting herself...the dwarf man had said that the intention of protecting one self was far more important than the spell itself.
"Let's do that," he was far too eager to try the Stunning Spell not to agree to move on. The smirk didn't make a way to his face this time, he just nodded, "I'll let you be first this time," maybe this was the time to be nice. Maybe.
His shield will be up pretty soon, by the way, he was NOT taking chances with a smart Ravenclaw.
Gnaeus stepped down from the lunar phase stage and paced around the room. He wasn't trying to make the students nervous, he just wanted to watch their progress closely. As he walked around the room he nodded at the students, trying to make them feel more comfortable. Most were doing well, but some still hadn't been successful at charming a decent shield. After circling the entire room he ascended the stage and clapped his hands twice to get their attention.
"For those of you who have successfully charmed a shield, congratulations. For those of you who haven't, remember that Rome wasn't built in a day. You must have patience, continue to practice, and persevere. We still have plenty of time left, so I want you to dedicate it to practicing. You now have my permission to use any of the spells I approved earlier." He gestured to the board. "I am sure you know the incantations and wand movements to some of these spells, so feel free to use them. If you don't, you can ask an older student, or continue to practice the Knockback Jinx, Hurling Hex, and Stunning Spell." He once again took out his wand and flicked it, making additional text appear on the board. "Practice, practice, practice, but remember the Shield Charm should still be your priority."
"Oh, one last thing. We will be having our first duels by the end of the meeting. In a moment I will be selecting some students to step up and do a little demonstration for us. If you think you are ready to duel, please let me know as I come by." He winked at them and smiled before stepping down from the stage.

I will do about three or four duels, maybe more, depending on how many people want to participate. You may not choose who you want to duel against, but it will be against someone from the same year as your character, to make things fair. Please make sure that you will have the time to duel, we don't want to make them longer than a day. If you have any questions don't hesitate to send me a PM.

Once the jinx had been cast, and once again penetrated through the shield, Kourt clapped her hands together once. "Much better." She was pleased to see that the girl hadn't tumbled back as she had done initially. That could only mean improvement!
She was preparing herself to practice the shield charm when the instructor began to speak once again. Listening carefully, she took note of the spells listed on the boards. Most of those...she didn't know. Well, except the stunning spell. They had used those in Herbology.
And they were really going to be dueling? Like...real duels? Erm...yeah, she wasn't ready for that just yet.
Glancing at Harlow, she cleared her throat. "You want to keep practicing with Flipendo? I only really know the stunning spell since we learned that in Herbology when working with toadstools..."

Phew. He was glad that Josh agreed. He spotted both Marie and Evelyn eyeing him. He shuddered slightly. Yes, Josh was much better than going against a snake.
"I'll do the shield charm first." he said getting his wand out. They might as well get Josh out of the way first. He had a feeling he'd be the more uncontrollable of the two.

He leaned back (why did he keep doing this?) and pointed his wand towards her, careful not to hit somone else he said the incantation. "Flipendo!"
Just when she was about to walk back to where she'd been standing before, Nora had to spin around quickly to cast the shield charm, or else she would've fallen on her ground, which she didn't want.
"Protego!"
It only made her back away one step, but... it was there! The shield was there! Kind of.

When she was about to cast back a spell, she heard Mr Spenser again, who encouraged them to go on practicing, but also said something about... real duels? Whoa. Looking back at Scott, there was a grin on her face. "Are you going to try that?" She asked, tilting her head towards the old man.
She'd love to try, but she certainly wasn't prepared enough for a real duel.

Harlow smiled, "My little sister takes ballet and figure skating classes. She's really good at it." Harlow had a feeling her sister was going to be a figure skater. Which she was happy about, she thought it was a really pretty sport. Persia could already do a lutz and she was only 4. "I've gone with her to a few classes and liked it." She just wasn't the dancing type. She just enjoyed the activity.
With a nod of her head she dusted her butt off again convinced there was a streak of dirt down her backside, "Thanks." she was proud of that shield even if the jinx got through. At least she was able to cast it this time.
She turned to listen to the dueling gnome talk. Her mouth dropped open when he said they would be doing actual duels. Harlow was so not ready for that. She looked over at Kourtney glad to see she wasn't the only nervous one. "I know a few other hexes. My brother taught me the bat-bogey hex if you want to try that one." It was sort of gross but she was better at that one than the knockback jinx. "But I know how to stun." not that she wanted to be lying on the dirty floor stunned, but she would do what Kourtney wanted to do.
Harlow was very accommodating.

"Very cool!" Kourt exclaimed. "It is a great activity, and great for keeping you in shape." And so was figure skating. She had watched a few girls perform, but never had picked up on it herself. She preferred solid ground and funky beats.
"Welcome." She answered with another smile, watching as Harlow steadied herself on her feet. Glancing about, she hoped that they weren't the only ones not having been successful at the shield charm. It was a bit difficult, after all.
Bat-bogey hex? Kourt hesitated slightly, but figured...why not? "We can try the bat-bogey hex if you want." She offered. "Though...I'm not exactly sure what that does?" Regardless, she would just have to try to protect herself from it.

Harlow nodded, "Yeah my sister practices with a coach 3 hours a day and she's only four." Harlow thought it was crazy, but her sister loved it and her parents wanted her to be good at it. And her coach said that was a good practice schedule for her age.
She beamed at the praise from Kourtney. She thought it was a rather nice try for a first year.
Harlow blushed a litte bit, "Um well it makes you boogers big and gives them wings and then they attack you." she told her shyly. It was a nasty little hex and quite gross if you asked her. But she was good at it.

When Harlow explained the actions of the hex, Kourtney's eyes widened and her hand automatically moved to her nose. "That sounds...nasty." She said with a nervous laugh. "But if you're good at it, then I suppose we can try it." She readied her wand to hopefully shield herself. Being stunned, she could handle...she wasn't sure about this hex though.

Harlow giggled when Kourtney's hand flew up to her nose. "Yeah it is a rather nasty little hex. But very handy." she explained. Especially when your brother is being an annoying git. Arya hadn't found a partner for the practicing, and had moved off to the side some to practice on her own. She was still visible to the small man, and the students should any want her assistance, but she was also a good distance away from the younger ones as to not catch any stray spells.
The prefect painstakingly worked her way through the list, both verbally and non-verbally. And while she was always prepared to duel, she didn't volunteer this time. She'd let some of the more eager students get their feet wet first.

It was rather good that she looked back to Marie in that moment, because she didn't have long to bring up the shield. "Protego!" Regardless that she was able to cast one nonverbally, Evelyn was indeed...taken by surprise.
Good Merlin. "Thanks for the warning." Pffft. "Stupefy!"

OOC: IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ! In about 24 hours we will begin to do some real dueling. If you want to participate READ THE RULES, have your character notify Gnaeus in this thread, and send me a PM stating that you want to duel and you have read the rules.
Marie rolled her eyes when she heard Evelyn mumble. She did warn the girl. It's not her fault Ev had to look over at Josh again now was it? What was she complaining about anyway, she got her shield up in time.
And she didn't waste any time casting back either. "Protego!" she said as she moved her wand to bring up a shield around her. Just then she heard the little man speak.
Awesome, they could use the other spells now. Not bothering to give Evelyn a warning this time Marie let her shield drop and with a flick of her wrist she pointed her wand at her friend again. "Incarcerous!" Let's see if Evelyn was fast enough to escape the ropes.
Not wanting to take any chances here she quickly put her own shield back up using a non-verbal Protego. Yeah, she didn't want to be caught off guard here while she was talking to the short one... who just happened to be walking by them now. "Excuse me sir, I would like to duel."

She didn't much pay attention to if her spell hit or not, mostly because her attention was suddenly taken by the shorty dude. Putting up another shield though with a quick 'Protego', just in case Marie felt like she wanted to take her off guard again, her eyes narrowed as she read through the list of spells. That was ALL they could do!?
Pfft.
Nevertheless, she was a bit slow in turning her attention back to Marie, and may have jumped a mile when she saw the ropes hit the shield, causing both to fall. HEY! She was lucky that the short dude was walking by. "I'll duel as well, sir." Yup!
...Now, back to hers and Marie's duel.
Just a disarming charm. In the rather brilliant nonverbal fashion of course.
