The last class of the day was in session when Gnaeus made way to the room off the great hall. Soon the young wizards and witches would be off for the day, but hopefully not too tired to learn about the art of dueling. He pulled key from his pocket, unlocked the doors, and pushed them. After bewitching them open, he made way to the center of the room, where he stood and waited for the students to arrive.
Gwendolyn could't wait to actually start duelling. This is going to be so great!, she thought and a crooket smile appeared on her fae. Realizing there was a question to answer, the young Ravenclaw tried thinking of something that hasn't been said before. Let's see...'Obscuro?', she said a bit unsure. After making a short break, she went on talking: 'When casted, a blindfold appears over the oponent's eyes. I suppose that when the oponent can't see, he becomes weeker'Did that make sense?, she then asked herself, looking around.

I have an immense amount of experience with dueling, having worked as an auror for nearly forty years. I have also participated in numerous dueling tournaments around the globe, and received the title of Dueling Champion twenty eight times." He paced up and down the stage as he spoke.
"Now, I want you all to introduce yourselves so we may all become better acquainted. Tell us your name, year, house, why you want to join the dueling club, and finally, what are your strengths and weaknesses."

Wow. They will be learning how to duel. The magical way. "I am Beatrice Evangeline Castell sir, a first year Ravenclaw." she started, feeling nervous as eyes moved in her direction. But why did she join this Club in the first place ? "Well-I don't really...know sir..But one thing is for sure. I want to learn how to duel," That was a reason, for Merlin's sake ! Why did she have to say she did not know ? She looked below to prevent herself from feeling the animosity around as she continued, "I'm good at Charms and plants-I think." she raised her head slightly, "And my weakness would be creatures. Magical dark creatures," She did had a list of her fears but when it comes to the magical type those were what popped out on her mind.

OOC: If you haven't introduced yourself yet feel free to do so, and for those who have you can guess the answer to the question.
She raised her hand as she gave her answer, "I reckon it's the defense and attack ?" Well, that was clearly also a question.

"Are those clear to everyone? If you have any questions in regards to the rules feel free to ask now or whenever they come up."
"Now I would like to just take a few moments to explain this." He said and stomped his foot twice. He was talking about the lunar phase stage. "Duelists begin here." He was standing in the middle of it, where the full moon was positioned. "Then, both duelists will walk away from each other until they reach the star." There was a star at both ends of the stage. "There they take their positions and begin to duel. As the duel proceeds the participants may walk closer to each other, but neither duelist may walk past the full moon, into the other duelist's area. Understood?" That was fairly simple, but if they had questions they could ask.
"Before we begin, there's something else that needs to be done." He gestured to the Slytherin boy, then spoke. "As Mister Kim mentioned, your wands must be in perfect condition. In tournaments, there will be a qualified wand expert or wandmaker to analyse the wands. This process is known as wand weighing. Now, I am no expert, but I will do my best to check your wands and make sure that they are suitable for dueling." He put his own wand away, and walked to the edge of the stage. "Make a line here, and bring me your wands."
OOC: Please make sure that you have a wand in your profile under "Wand Type" before you post your character showing Gnaeus his or her wand. It can be the one you received from Ollivander's Shop or you can make one up. After handing the wand don't walk away, it will take only a few moments.
She quickly scribbled notes as Mr. Spenser talked, about the rules and stuff. Especially during the Duel proper. She kept every detail in mind.
And then there goes the wand inspection. She patted her pocket to check her wand, wait. It was not there ! The students were starting to form a line and Beezus still doesn't have her wand. She started to get panicky. Biting her lower lip, she approached her backpack and thank Godric ! Because it was there. Carefully placed beside her stack of parchments. She sighed at her carelessness and walked towards the line.
When it was her turn, she showed Mr. Spenser her 11.8 inches Birch wood wand with the core of a Unicorn hair. "Here you go sir," she said as she handed it to him.

One answer per student, one student at the time, and try not to repeat answers.” Gnaeus stood back and let the students do the talking for a little while.
Spells. Spells. Spells. But not dark. Think Beatrice. Think. She raised her hand and hoped that she would say something that was not absurd, "Sir, will the Petrificus Totalus count ?" Okay. She was not sure if any of the other students have had the same answer because honestly, she was not paying attention. She was too indulged with her own dilemma.
Gnaeus stuffed his hand in his pocket and pulled out his wand. With a flick the rules on the hovering blackboard were erased and two lists appeared.
Quote:
Summoning charm
Bombarding Spell
Reductor Curse
”You are prohibited to use these three spells.
The Summoning Charm will not work if your opponent has a tight grip on his or her wand. There are also other reasons, but you needn’t worry about them. Just don’t use it.
Both the Bombarding Spell and the Reductor Curse will cause severe physical damage to your opponent. DO NOT USE THEM! Mild injuries caused by the Knockback Jinx or Hurling Hex are acceptable, but exploding your opponent is not!
Use them and I will personally escort you to Azkaban.” He eyed all of them but gave an especially nasty look to those who suggested them.
”These,” Gnaeus began gesturing to the first list, ”are all acceptable.”“The first charm is the most important, since you will be using it to counter the majority of spells used against you. You can also counter a spell with another spell. However, when you do this you run the risk of producing a Priori Incantatem. This will only happen if the wands of the duelists share the same core.
For now, use the Shield Charm to protect yourselves. The incantation is ‘Protego’ and the wand movement is a waving motion. Like so.”
He extended his arm and pointed his wand at a random student. Then, moving his elbow and wrist, he waved the wand horizontally, from right to left, and back to the starting point. ”Axis of rotation is the elbow.” He did it a second time, faster, and recited the incantation. ”Protego!” A blue light in form of a circle flashed before him, then disappeared just as quickly. ”The Shield Charm will protect you from magical and physical attacks. It is a very advanced charm; many adult wizards can’t perform it successfully, so you will need a lot of practice.
You will start by protecting yourselves from a simple Knockback Jinx.”The incantation for the Knockback Jinx is ‘Flipendo’ and the wand movement is squiggly line.” He demonstrated by drawing any sloppy squiggly line and then returned his wand to his pocket. ”Or you can just point… It’s very easy to cast.”
”Now, time to start practicing. Find a partner, preferably someone from the same year as you, and practice these two spells. If you want to practice the Shield Charm by yourself first that is fine. We will be moving onto the other spells you suggested shortly, but I want you to have the opportunity to practice this charm first. It’s a great way to warm up.” Yep, that was all this was, a warm up. ”Go on, go on.” He urged them.
OOC: The Knockback Jinx is one of the most basic spells, so no one should have trouble casting it. It’s also very weak, so if your character is hit by it they are not going to break any bones or die. The worst that can happen is they fall on their bottom. The Shield Charm is a lot more difficult so take your time practicing it. Do not use any other spells yet.
Presley was so excited. She got to use spells on another person for perhaps one of the only times during her magical education. Well, sometimes they got to do things like, change hair color of each other. But never had she been allowed to cast an offensive spell before, or protect herself by blocking one. She glanced around the room, looking for a familiar face. "I need a partner!" She called, when she didn't immediately see someone to partner with. Preferably someone in her own year! One that didn't know her well enough to feel bad if they hexed her? Ues, she needed a partner who would fling the curses at her, and force her to use energy to repel them. Otherwise, how would she learn?

Isobel looked around, trying to see if there was anyone who wanted to be her partner. Again, she wished Damien was there, this wasn't technically a class, it was a club. Damien didn't have anything against clubs, did he? "Anyone want to be my partner?" Isobel said, quite loudly, to the room in general.

Alyssa stepped up to Presley,"Hi! Presley, I'll be your partner, if you don't have one. I changed my mind about leaving. Do you want to practice the movements first or try using the actual spells?"

Reason: Changed partners. Isobel is lot older than me.
Finally! They got to use some good spells.
Of course being an under-experienced first year, almost nobody would want to go with him, as he would be weak.
Scott scanned the room, looking for other first years, hoping to find someone he knew. "Anyone want to be my partner?" he reluctantly said, directed at no one in particular.
Jesifur stepped forward, "Any first years need a partner?"
While waiting to see if someone would partner her she went over the moves they were just taught. Knockback Jinx - say "flipendo" and make a squiggly line at your opponent, or simply point it at them. Shield Charm - say "protego" as you draw a line in front of yourself quickly from right to left and back again using your elbow as the axis point. She repeated both a few times in her head to keep them straight.

Cassie smiled and thanked Professor Spenser for clearing the air for her with the whole rules thing and took her wand, noting well his advice.
Awesome! Time to get practical! The shield charm should be simple enough as the Professor said, but she still only trusted one person enough to let them try to hex her, regardless of the fact that the hex wouldn't really hurt her. She looked around the room for her bestie
"Oi Marilyn, you're with me." Yeah she didn't have a choice in the matter really, hehe.

Professor Spencer had just finished speaking about the two spells when Marilyn heard a familiar voice calling out to her over the crowd.
Cassie.
Of course.
She smiled, walking over to her bestie. Naturally they'd want to keep the practice hexing among themselves. Half the students in the room had no experience...Not that she and Cassie had much of the same in dueling...but what they lacked in experience, they made up for in years. As older girls who were more in control of their magic, it was just BEST that they work together.
Yes, it was BEST.
"As long as you promise to give it everything you've got." Nodding, she moved back a little. Her wand was still in her hand for the wand-weighing just moments before. Marilyn was familiar with the knockback jinx, of course. Jack had used it against her in first year...
Bowing...as instructed!
In a flash, she was drawing the same sloppy squiggly line the Professor was, exclaiming Flipendo!

Good for hexes? GOODY! Tori smiled indeed, even if he said it wasn't an easy wand to wield. Well, it had chosen her, so that meant she was the master of it! It liked her and she it, so hopefully they would work well together in dueling.
She listened carefully as everyone suggested spells and by the time she had opened her mouth to offer an answer, everyone else had already named everything. Well then, all Tori had to do was find a partner.
"Anybody need a partner?" she called out hopefully, standing on her toes and looking around for any single people.

While waiting for Presley to decide whether she wanted to be her partner, Alyssa started practicing on the wand movements of the Knock Back jinx spell. "Point wand or squiggle it while saying FLIPENDO. Easy enough. Now for the Shielding Charm. PROTEGO. Wand out wave horizontally from right to left and back again remembering that the axis of rotation is at the elbows, then cast spell."
Knowing that the Shielding Charm was a little more difficult, Alyssa continued practicing it. "I'm definitely going to be very familiar with this spell if I want to survive," Alyssa told herself.

Nothing. He landed on his bottom and looked up at the girl and laughed.

"Right get ready" he said, leaning forward in an offensive stance.
"Flipendo!"

She heard someone calling for a partner. "I will be your partner." she smiled at the girl. They were in the same year but the girl was a head taller than Harlow.

It was too bad for her Hufflepuff friend. The blonde was prepared this time. "Protego!" Doing the strange arm angle, she threw the shield up...whipping around in the next instant to cast FLIPENDO! Her eyes never left Cassie's.
Gah! Bad idea to warn her. The Hufflepuff in her was going to get her killed one day. Oh yes. At least this was just the dueling club and this jinx was pretty harmless so no limbs lost here.
"Not today Marilyn!!! Protego!" Yeah she was ready too and in no hurry to fall on her bum again, it was sure to be bruised right now. She was barely quick enough this time, but grateful that the jinx was blocked. Seconds later she had her wand pointed at her friend again." Flipendo!"
You would think they were trying to kill each other.
