The Beginning
“There is a cosmic dance of creation”
Things had not been so bad, lately. Fred and George had agreed to let her help them in their shop over the summer, and she had definitely grown a few inches. She was a little over the height of five feet six inches now and, as far as Ginny Weasley was concerned, it was more than fine.
She met the twins on her way upstairs, and noticed that they were carrying armfuls of what looked like mashed, sticky lumps of wet paper. “Mum’s in the kitchen,” she said, before they could open their mouths to ask. “Better Apparate, she’s not too happy.”
Molly Weasley would not be, of course – not when she knew half a dozen members of the Order were coming to dinner, and she had a bare half hour to cook a scrumptious meal, not only for them, but also her brood of seven kids. Not to count Harry and Hermione – both of whom had come over for the summer – and a tired Mr. Weasley.
Fred and George had other things on their mind, though. “I’m not sure if we can Apparate with all this in our arms,” Fred said, looking slightly worried. “Is she really that angry?” Ever since their shop had proved itself such a massive success, Molly Weasley had stopped trying to convince them to give up their ideas of a joke shop, and return to Hogwarts; but a spell of Molly-Weasley-bad-mood still meant that caution was required.
“More than you know,” Ginny replied, her eyes glinting as she surveyed the supplies in the twins’ arms. “What are those anyway?”
“That’s classified,” George said, looking smug. “We shall see you... later.” He turned to Fred, and there was a certain sparkle of mischief in his eyes that Ginny did not fail to notice. “Shall we give it a try then, George?”
Fred nodded. “Indeed, brother.”
There was a crack, and the two of them disappeared into thin air. Ginny shook her head, using one of the gloves in the pocket of her jeans to pick up a portion of the paper-lump that had fallen out of Fred and George’s laden arms, when they had taken to Apparition. On closer inspection, it looked like snow frozen in place, and it shimmered when she held it up to the light. A sudden urge to re-examine it later, overwhelmed her and, wrapping it in her glove, Ginny stowed it into a back pocket of her faded jeans.
It was late in the afternoon, and she was looking forward to a nap, now. Today had been her last day helping the twins with their joke shop, for tomorrow would see the Hogwarts Engine whisking her away to her second home. Her mind still on the shop, she made her way into her bedroom – it was small, made to seem smaller by a massive poster of her favourite quidditch team adorning an entire wall – and was surprised to see a tawny owl perched at the window-sill, looking slightly dazed as if it had collided with the transparent window-pane, in an effort to hop into the room.
“You poor thing!”
The owl hooted rather faintly in response. I f it had been a person, Ginny thought as she crossed the floor and opened the window, I would have thought they were drunk. The bird hopped in, tried to rub its head against her hand as she stroked it, and then held out a leg. Ginny quickly untied the envelope attached to it, and was surprised to see that it bore the Hogwarts crest. Did this mean that she was in trouble? Sure, the last thing she had done before returning home for the summer was to turn Millicent Bulstrode's hair a flaming pink but, surely, Dumbledore would not write to her parents now, now that the holidays had pretty much come to an end.
“You won’t find out if you don’t open it, you know.”
Ginny turned; the speaker was the oval-shaped mirror mounted on the wall opposite. “Thanks for the info of the century, mirror man,” she said, shaking red locks out of her eyes as, with a sparkle in them, she tore open the envelope and plunged a hand outside. Something golden and scarlet fell to the floor, something golden and scarlet and rather metallic. What followed next was an exclamation filled with clear surprise.

Ginny Weasley awoke with feeble sunlight in her eyes, the kind that is filtered, first by autumn clouds, and second by a canopy of trees. Her limbs were stiff from cold, but she felt warmer than she had when she had fallen asleep.
She sat up - felt something slip, off her shoulders, to the ground - picked it up –- and realized, with a sudden tightening of her intestines, that it was Draco’s robe.
A sudden pang of fear tore through her heart. Draco’s robe – why was she wrapped in his robe? Had something happened to him, had a werewolf carried him off? God, the time-turner, where was the time-turner? Frantically and on all fours, she began to search for the stone thing, rubbing dirt off the ground in case a shower of night-dust had buried it somewhere.
“You look highly amusing, Weasley, but I don’t think I can take this much longer without being sick.”
Cheeks flushing with embarrassment, Ginny looked up, only to see Malfoy standing at the edge of the clearing. Unlike last night, he looked his usual, immaculately clean self again, though his hair was tousled and clearly wet. “There’s a water-course up north, if you want to take a bath, Weasley,” he said coldly. “Deeper in the forest, so keep your wand at the ready.”
“What’s your robe doing here?” she demanded, ignoring his remark and suddenly suspicious. Malfoy rolled his eyes in response. “I didn’t grab you for an illicit midnight snog, if that’s what you’re wondering,” he said, sounding amused by the prospect. “I don’t touch blood-traitors, Weasley.”
Ginny glared at him, quite aware that, for every boy who did not want her, there were four who did. “That’s not what I asked,” she said, narrowing her eyes. “What’s your robe doing here, Malfoy? What have you been up to, this time? If you don’t tell me, I’m going to –”
“Cry your eyes out?” Malfoy suggested, still amused. “You were freezing, Weasley, so I gave you my robe. Now get out of my face, you look worse-off than the bush Granger carries on her head.”
To say the least, Ginny had not been expecting that for an answer. She blinked her surprise, swore at him to cover it and, without another word, trudged out of the clearing. Deeper in the forest, she found the place where a shallow river ran. She was emerging from it half an hour later, wet-haired and pleasantly refreshed, when she suddenly realized what stood in her way:
A lion.
She had seen fiercer cats in pictures, heard their roars claw out at visitors from the portrait that hung in Charlie’s bedroom. But a picture is a picture and a voice is a voice, and seeing a full-grown, hungry lion can beget fear in the bravest of people. Now, Ginny was no chocolate-and-candy teenager: she was a Gryffindor in the truest sense of the word. So for a moment, she stood there, her mind numb, her heart racing – stood there watching the lion, whose eyes were clearly fixed on her, whose eyes held a strange, gnawing sort of hunger, as if it had not seen potential-human-food for days on end – but, next moment, she had whipped out her wand and pointed it at the lion’s heart.
The movement was all it took: the lion sprang, vicious and, surprised by the startling movement, Ginny fell back. She gave a scream as her foot slipped over a rock at the bank of the river, her ankle scraped against stone as she hurtled into the water, there was the sound of running footsteps, an “Avada Kedavra” that sounded far, far off, and then stars swam in front of her eyes.
All was terrifyingly black.
Ginny sat up, waking up from a very bad dream in which a lion had nearly had her sweet-smelling hair for breakfast. She reached a hand and gingerly touched her flame-coloured locks, then breathed a sigh of relief. Seconds later, she gave a scream and jumped a few inches in the air: she was sitting, not far off from the river and, at the far end of her range of sight lay the body of a dead lion.
She turned her face away, feeling sick.
“Sorry about having to kill your little pet,” Malfoy’s familiar drawl interrupted her thoughts. She looked up, and realized he was sitting, a little distance away from her. “I mean, he was an adorable Lion King Man and all, but he seemed pretty hungry.”
“You were watching,” she said, her tones accusatory.
“Of course I was,” he said, his eyes glinting malevolently. “I was right behind the trees because I wanted to see you naked.”
Angry colour flushed in her cheeks. “Malfoy, you –”
“Life-saver?” he suggested, looking amused. “Mr. Perfect? You-Know-What God?” He shook his head, smirked, and stood up. “I wasn’t watching Weasley – because to do that, I would need to believe you actually have something to offer me but, surprise surprise, I don’t. You definitely managed quite a scream, though. I thought it was better to... check.” He smirked again, and stretched his legs as he sat down once more.
Ginny was not sure what to say to that, so she stared at the ground for a second. “Thanks,” she said, after a while.
He raised an eyebrow. “What for?”
It took her an enormous effort to say what she said next, but Ginny had been brought up in a family where courtesies were always thanked for. “For saving my life, you prat.” The last two words she added, of course, for effect.
If Ginny had thought he would be surprised, she could not have been wronger. “I don’t believe in verbal thanks, Weasley,” he replied coolly. “Whether one is up to it or not, a favour for a favour; in exchange of one thing, another – it’s a Malfoy custom.”
She raised an eyebrow. That his family would uphold a stupid custom like that, she had no doubt. “Hey, Malfoy, I think I’ll tell you the world’s biggest truth in exchange for that awesome favour you did me,” she told him generously. “And you know what that is? You’re a big-headed toerag, Malfoy, that’s what it is.”
“I want food, Weasley,” he smirked in response. “I saved your life, and I want you to get me some food.”
Nose in air, Ginny looked away without replying. Now that he mentioned it, she was terribly hungry, too. Last she had eaten had been breakfast at the Burrow, and that had been a good fifteen hours ago. Her stomach gave a low rumble, and she sincerely wished he had not heard it.
“Hungry much, Weaselhead?”
She raised herself to her full height to give a scathing response – probably something along the lines of “you’re the one begging me for food, Malfoy” – when she suddenly remembered something. Clapping her hands in delight, Ginny stowed one of them inside the back pocket of her jeans. The sweets! She had stuffed a lot of sweets in there, yesterday. Sure enough, her hand came out full of glittering wrappers.
“Wise move, blood-traitor.”
“I don’t plan on sharing,” she said with a smile, popping a sweet into her mouth. She reached for another – and Malfoy had dived at her and grabbed the sweets out of her hands. “Give those back!” Ginny said angrily, kicking a stump in her anger, but the only thing Malfoy gave her was a glare.
“I didn’t know you were this stupid, Weasley,” he said scathingly. When she raised an eyebrow, he held up the hand in which he now carried her sweets. “This is all the food we have – and you’re wasting it.” With a shake of his head, he took out his wand and pointed it at a tiny, chocolate dragon (unlike the usual chocolate frog, this was not alive.) There was a flash of light, and the chocolate had grown in size. In fact, it continued to grow until it could have fitted four or five good-sized plates.
“Enlargement charm,” he said, smirking at the look of incredulity on her face. “Didn’t think of it, did you, pea-brain?”
“I’m not a pea-brain!” Ginny flared. She could be excellent with a wand – was, in fact, one of Hogwarts’s best dueling artistes – but, much as she hated to admit it, it was hexes and jinxes that were her strength, not simple charms. “And give my sweets back, or I’ll kick your face.”
“Don’t be angry if I kick yours back in response,” he drawled and, enjoying the look of shock on her face – living with six older brothers had toughened Ginny Weasley up, but she had never, until now, met a boy who had found it so easy to tell a girl he would kick her face if she kicked his; Malfoy really was a git, he really didn’t have any manners – he sat down and, using his wand to divide the chocolate dragon into half and conjure a spoon, he began to wolf down mouthfuls of chocolate.
Giving him a final, angry glare, Ginny sat down to bite into her share of chocolate. If I have to put up with him any more, she thought to herself. I'm going to run off with that stray donkey we saw earlier.
Malfoy returned her glare with a smirk, but at the back of his mind was anxiety, anxiety and the fragments of a plan to get out of here -- out of here and as far from Ginny Weasley as possible.
