Chapter # 19
The End of the Beginning
“Relativity unifies space with time.”

Her success lay, clearly, in the fact that she had caught him off guard – in his surprise, he could not push her away in time, and her lips had forced themselves on his before he could so much as attempt to gather his wits.

It felt hasty only for a moment – than it was silent and sweet and delicious, like a cool drink of water after days of thirst, or like she had come home after walking ten thousand miles without food or drink. She buried herself deeper into him and, slowly but surely, Draco’s arms wrapped themselves around her.

He had felt shock course through his frame, when her lips had touched hers, shock because this was the last thing he had expected from Ginevra Weasley - he had known he had hurt her, more than once, but he had known, too, how impossible a relationship between the two of them would be -- and that in mind, he had somehow managed to persuade himself the spark had been momentary, that no love existed, only a burning sort of flame that return to Hogwarts would extinguish with ease. But his arms rose to hold her now, and he realized how steel-like the walls of love were, how stubborn because they refused to give way... because they were.

Love, no matter how strong, is built - often! - with walls of sand. The winds of time, or perhaps of difficulty, can tear them apart, and leave them in ruins. What he felt for her, too, was like those walls, but he realized now hard it was to let her go, and that it only seemed easy now, because he was with her, because he knew that, in a way, she needed him, his presence. If they managed to return to Hogwarts, he would no longer have her - and he realized now that he would want her then, more badly than ever -- yes, there was no way he would be able to forget her. Not now.

He pushed his thoughts to the back of his mind, and pulled her closer to him, his entire, inadvertent focus the feel of her arms round his neck - the sweet scent of her hair - her. Gently at first, demandingly within a few seconds of it, he kissed her back, and Ginny let him, let him until she could feel nothing, nothing but Draco, nothing but the touch of his body against hers, the pressure of his lips, his rich scent, his strong arms, and –

– and then the barrier, the support against which they had been leaning, disappeared into nothingness and the two of them fell, Ginny first, Draco on top of her, both of them below the Tree. She did not let go of her hold on him, but gripped him tighter, pulled him closer, and Draco kissed her deeply, kissed her until she suddenly pushed him off and sat up.

“We were supposed to take a leaf,” she said quietly, her voice breathless.

“We will,” he replied and pushed her back on the ground where, placing his hands behind her head, he kissed her again, kissed her again in a way that was wild with joy and happiness and passion. Ginny kissed him back, kissed him back for what seemed like ages of sunlight and warmth and butterbeer, and then she somehow pushed him off again.

“Don’t do it when you don’t love me,” she said, very casually, brushing mud off her jeans as she stood up, reached overhead and easily plucked a leaf from the tree. “I only did that because there was no other way to get past the plate.”

He grabbed her and pushed her against the trunk of the tree. “No, you didn’t,” he said. “You did it because you love me, because you know I love you, too. You’re such a witch, Ginny Weasley, you’re such a witch.”

Hands on hips, she glared at him. “Why did you refuse to kiss me in Bowman's house?” she demanded almost savagely.

His eyes flickered. “Ginny –”

“Ginny, what? Do you realize how much you've hurt me, how little concern you have shown for what I go through?"

"Ginny -"

"Tell me or I’ll hit you, Malfoy.”

He took a deep breath, not sure how to word his thoughts, but aware that she would not let him go – not now – without an answer. “We’re different in a lot of ways, Ginny,” he said finally. “I tried to convince myself I never felt anything for you because I knew things between us wouldn’t work out. I tried, but I couldn’t –”

THE STRAY DONKEY! her mind hollered. “Get out of the way, Malfoy,” she cut through rudely. His answer stung more than she had thought any answer could, twisted in her chest like a knife with a very sharp point. What was he, a coward? A coward scared of, perhaps, his parents’ displeasure? She glared daggers at him, her mouth still burning from, still tasting of, the kiss – why wouldn’t the feeling go away? – and, to her surprise, he grinned in response.

“Kiss me and I will.”

She looked up at him and glared angrily once more. Then something in her broke, perhaps control, perhaps a weight of mistrust, and she stood on tiptoe, kissed him on the chin. Draco grinned, wrapped his arms around her and pulled her closer, and she rested her head against his chest.

“I love you,” he said, and his voice was husky, almost quivering from joy. “I’m sor –”

She placed a finger on his mouth, did not let him complete the word, let alone the sentence. “Don’t apologize,” she said quietly. “This isn’t the place to snog each other, anyway. We need to figure out what do with the leaf.”

“Let’s crush it and eat it – I’m hungry.”

“Draco Malfoy!”

“Alright, alright, let me see it.” They sat down, beneath the thick branches of the tree, and in the shade she handed over the little leaf. It was as small as the tree was enormous, sweet-smelling in its hue of deep green, and very moist from dew. Draco ran a hand over it, then unfastened his chain from round his neck. Clicking open the oval pendant, he took out the time-turner and, to Ginny's surprise, wrapped it in the leaf.

Silly, she thought to herself with an inward chuckle, but she did not say so out loud - what if that was how the time-turned was supposed to be repaired? For a few seconds, they waited. -- Nothing happened.

Ginny stuck her tongue out at him. “Better luck next time.”

Draco only smiled in response – he had a brilliant smile, and she managed to count seven even, white teeth before it disappeared – and placed the leaf on the ground. “What I want, right now,” he began luxuriously. “Is this.” He reached forward to kiss her, she laughed and playfully pushed him off and, in all the confusion, the time-turner in his hand fell to the ground, rolled off.

Draco made a grab for it, but missed, and the time-turner , on its way away from its owner, bumped into the little leaf lying on the ground. There was a flash of fire, the scent of mint, and the time-turner had come to a halt – its knob no longer broken, its sheen magnified twofold. Draco’s eyes widened, Ginny’s eyes nearly popped out, and their exclamations came out as one:

“It’s mended!”

For a second, they dared not speak. The present seemed so unreal, too beautiful to be true, and perhaps they both felt words would mar its loveliness, or perhaps wake them up from what seemed a dream of sweetness. Then, very quietly, Ginny reached forward, as if to pick the time-turner, but Draco grabbed her arm, his manner very urgent.

“What?” she asked, alarmed.

“Pinch me,” he replied, his lips twitching into a smile.

Time-turner forgotten, she literally threw herself at him. Draco fell backwards, laughing mirthfully, and Ginny leaned down and kissed his lips. Once, twice, thrice. “You idiot,” she told him, shaking him by the collar. “You pretty-faced, handsome idiot.”

“You gorgeous, redheaded witch,” he responded, gently pushing her away. His left hand holding her right, Draco sat up and reached out to pick the time-turner. His fingers came in contact with the little, now-mended thing – and then the world was a storm of colours, and they were raging through dazzling hues and winds and noise and –

ThwwACCCKK.

They landed, both of them, on their backs. Ginny sat up, rubbed her head, and looked around at the familiar walls of the Hogwarts Express.

“But the time-turner –” she began breathlessly.

“It was set,” Draco replied before she could finish her question. “The Leaf of Solution, wasn’t it? It didn’t just mend the turner – it set it to the right period, too.” His tones were less breathless than her, far more collected. Then a voice – two voices, two very familiar voices, in fact – floated their way.

“You’re supposed to be patrolling the corridor, Weasley.”

“Get out of my face, Malfoy.”

Ginny raised an eyebrow, looked over at Draco, and he grinned in response. “Seems like we haven’t gone back in time, yet,” he said, leaning forward to catch a better look at the source of noise. There, not far off, stood another Draco and another Ginny, bickering rather noisily with each other. “Oooh, you sound fiery. What did you have for breakfast, crow soup?”

“Do NOT make fun of me,” Ginny said, playful warning in her tones. But she had dropped her voice by way of cautions, and it took all her effort not to cry out “No!” as the clone Ginny grabbed at the clone Draco’s neck and the two of them had, within moments, disappeared from her stunned sight. The train’s open door continued to fly in the wind, and Ginny’s voice seemed stuck in her throat, too coarse for language.

“That,” she said finally. “Was weird.”

Draco nodded, and she followed him towards the door. They stood at a safe distance, the deafening roar of the engine loud in their eardrums, until he took a careful step forwards and slammed the door shut. The sudden silence was almost unnerving, and, when she could no longer bear it, Ginny decided to break it herself.

“Draco?”

He seemed lost in thought, and he only raised his chin in response, making no attempt to string words together. It unnerved him, what he had seen – a copy of himself, a copy of her, both ready to bite each other’s head off.

“Draco –” she scooted closer to him, laid a hand on his shoulder, and he inclined his chin to kiss it. The act calmed him, for some reason, so he repeated it, and then Ginny had thrown herself in his arms. He kissed her forehead, her lips, her chin, then kissed her forehead again.

“Draco.” Tenderly, she pushed him away, made him look down at her. If she was to speak she should, Ginny knew, do it now, before she lost herself and her breath in his kisses. “You realize what we’ve stepped into, don’t you?”

“Ginny,” and he sounded urgent, almost as if she would not like what he had to say, and sudden fear – fear of losing him again – made her tighten her grip on him. He took both of her hands in his and, when he spoke, his tones were calm. “You understand I won’t have much left if I tell everyone we’re seeing each other, don’t you? My family will disown me.”

It tore her to know she had to make a response to that statement. It was fact, and she hated at the knowledge that she wanted him so badly, she could drive him to a decision that might estrange him from his blood-relations. But how could she let him go, now that all was well once more, when her heart had clung to him when there had been little, almost no, hope?

She stayed silent, eyes fixed on her feet. It was not her words, but his, that finally broke the haunting silence.

“Give me time.” He placed a hand beneath her chin, and forced her to look up at him, into his eyes. “I need to stand on my own feet, build something of a career. I can’t survive without my family, not right now, because I know your family hates me, too – no, don’t wince like that, Ginny, you know its true –”

“Draco –” she tried to cut across.

“Listen. Give me time, only a year of it. This is my last term at Hogwarts, I can build a foundation for us if you give me a year’s time.”

“We can at least tell –”

“We can’t tell anyone.”

Her chest seemed to heave with the weights of years of problems, but Ginny Weasley had never been the type to give in to difficulties. Her answer now, she knew, depended on how much she trusted him. He was willing to give up so much for her – did she believe enough in him to give him what he was asking for? There were not many things she was not sure of, right then, but of one thing, there was no doubt: she loved him, could not survive without him now. For a long time, she was silent and he waited – a wait that seemed to him, unbearable, more painful than anything he had ever experienced in his entire lifetime. What if she said no? – and then, at long last, she nodded.

“You’ll wait?” he half-whispered.

She nodded again, and lowered his face towards hers own. “I will,” she said against his lips. “But you have to meet my friends, get to know them. Your parents might get angry at that, but they wouldn’t disown you for it. You have to show my family you don’t hate muggles, or don’t think we’re blood-tr –”

He pressed his lips against hers so hard, she could not complete the word. “Don’t ever say it again,” he said firmly.

“Will you do it?”

“I can’t, Ginny, my parents’ displeasure –”

“They won’t disown you, can’t you do as much for me? I need to see I can trust you, Draco, I need to know I’m not making a mistake.”

He pulled away, as if burned by her words. “You still consider that possibility?” he asked, almost coldly. “After all we’ve been through –”

“Draco, don’t you understand?” She let go of his hands, and turned away from him. When she spoke, her voice almost quivered. “When I tell my parents that I’ve been dating you in secret for twelve whole months, they would probably want to skin me alive, if not something worse. I need proof that you love me, not for myself, but to show them. They know of your fondness for the Dark Arts, I don’t even know myself if you’re going to –”

“You think I’m not going to give them up, don’t you?” There was something very, very bitter about his tones. “Do you know how badly someone who turns away from the Dark Arts, when the Dark Lord expects them to take up his service, pays? But I’m willing, Ginny. I’m willing to let go of it for your sake and you –”

She spun around. “We’re both making sacrifices!” she said angrily. “It’s not the end of the world, we can make this work, Draco!”

He sighed, and looked away. When he finally looked at her, he seemed to have come to a decision, and the determination his eyes carried almost frightened her. What if he had decided to leave her? What if –

“I’ll get to know your friends,” he said quietly. “Your family. But don’t expect me to just walk up to them and say “Oh hello, season’s greetings from the handsome, death-eater dude!” It’s not funny,” he added sharply, as the corners of her mouth twitched. “It will take time, Ginny, or they might suspect something. The change has to be slow – it will be slow, in fact.”

Ginny nodded, and he looked away again. Then she went up to, stood next to him, and he slipped an arm around her waist. “I love you, Angel.”

“Fancy,” she replied, sticking her tongue out at him. “Real fancy, Dragon.”

“Angel is still fancier,” he replied and then, grabbing her shoulders, he kissed her mouth wonderfully shut. She kissed him back, kissed him truly and madly and deeply, and then they broke the kiss to grin, warm in each other’s embrace, merry in each other’s sudden laughter.

The sound of their laughter rose in volume, touched the roof of the Express, and wafted through the corridor Ginny Weasley was supposed to patrol, its essence jovial, its tinkle too charming for words.

Well, super happy endings seem so... unreal, sometimes. Not always, though. I mean, I almost made Draco say he couldn't put up with the problems that a relationship with Ginny would bring, and walk away. But I couldn't! Because I love those two together! But they just can't have smooth sailing all the way... that wouldn't be realistic.


My first ficcie on SS had a SUPER happy ending, though.
