The Beginning

“There is a cosmic dance of creation”

Things had not been so bad, lately. Fred and George had agreed to let her help them in their shop over the summer, and she had definitely grown a few inches. She was a little over the height of five feet six inches now and, as far as Ginny Weasley was concerned, it was more than fine.

She met the twins on her way upstairs, and noticed that they were carrying armfuls of what looked like mashed, sticky lumps of wet paper. “Mum’s in the kitchen,” she said, before they could open their mouths to ask. “Better Apparate, she’s not too happy.”

Molly Weasley would not be, of course – not when she knew half a dozen members of the Order were coming to dinner, and she had a bare half hour to cook a scrumptious meal, not only for them, but also her brood of seven kids. Not to count Harry and Hermione – both of whom had come over for the summer – and a tired Mr. Weasley.

Fred and George had other things on their mind, though. “I’m not sure if we can Apparate with all this in our arms,” Fred said, looking slightly worried. “Is she really that angry?” Ever since their shop had proved itself such a massive success, Molly Weasley had stopped trying to convince them to give up their ideas of a joke shop, and return to Hogwarts; but a spell of Molly-Weasley-bad-mood still meant that caution was required.

“More than you know,” Ginny replied, her eyes glinting as she surveyed the supplies in the twins’ arms. “What are those anyway?”

“That’s classified,” George said, looking smug. “We shall see you... later.” He turned to Fred, and there was a certain sparkle of mischief in his eyes that Ginny did not fail to notice. “Shall we give it a try then, George?”

Fred nodded. “Indeed, brother.”

There was a crack, and the two of them disappeared into thin air. Ginny shook her head, using one of the gloves in the pocket of her jeans to pick up a portion of the paper-lump that had fallen out of Fred and George’s laden arms, when they had taken to Apparition. On closer inspection, it looked like snow frozen in place, and it shimmered when she held it up to the light. A sudden urge to re-examine it later, overwhelmed her and, wrapping it in her glove, Ginny stowed it into a back pocket of her faded jeans.

It was late in the afternoon, and she was looking forward to a nap, now. Today had been her last day helping the twins with their joke shop, for tomorrow would see the Hogwarts Engine whisking her away to her second home. Her mind still on the shop, she made her way into her bedroom – it was small, made to seem smaller by a massive poster of her favourite quidditch team adorning an entire wall – and was surprised to see a tawny owl perched at the window-sill, looking slightly dazed as if it had collided with the transparent window-pane, in an effort to hop into the room.

“You poor thing!”

The owl hooted rather faintly in response. If it had been a person, Ginny thought as she crossed the floor and opened the window, I would have thought they were drunk. The bird hopped in, tried to rub its head against her hand as she stroked it, and then held out a leg. Ginny quickly untied the envelope attached to it, and was surprised to see that it bore the Hogwarts crest. Did this mean that she was in trouble? Sure, the last thing she had done before returning home for the summer was to turn Millicent Bulstrode's hair a flaming pink but, surely, Dumbledore would not write to her parents now, now that the holidays had pretty much come to an end.

“You won’t find out if you don’t open it, you know.”

Ginny turned; the speaker was the oval-shaped mirror mounted on the wall opposite. “Thanks for the info of the century, mirror man,” she said, shaking red locks out of her eyes as, with a sparkle in them, she tore open the envelope and plunged a hand outside. Something golden and scarlet fell to the floor, something golden and scarlet and rather metallic. What followed next was an exclamation filled with clear surprise.

“My God, I’m a Prefect!”

Chapter # 18
The Proof of Humanity
“The intrinsic connectedness of the constituents of the universe.”

Through air, they rushed, and Ginny was reminded horribly of the last time she had experienced similar conditions – it was the time she had broken Draco’s time-turner, landed the two of them into the medieval ages.

It was his fault, if he hadn’t –

Thought was cut off as she landed, very roughly, on tacky, green ground. She shoved Draco away from her with all her might and jumped to her feet, surveying her surroundings with suspicious eyes. No insect sprung from the grass and attempt to bite her head off, no herd of stray donkeys began to rain from the skies - nothing stirred, indeed, but a cool, cheerful breeze.

Draco caught the look of mistrust in her eyes. “Don’t be scared little Weasley," he drawled coldly. "Nothing’s going to eat you”

She ignored the remark, and finally looked ahead. For a few steps, stretched green ground and, where it ended was the start of an enormous tree. Enormous? No -- enormous was not the word. The tree towered over them, its massive branches bent with the weight of its many leaves. Ginny did not know it, but what she saw now was only a diminished, withering form of the Original Tree, the Tree whose powers Layan, the Elf-Lady had raised - with her Passing On, had washed into soils far away, much of the Tree's powers, and yet what Ginny saw struck her with sudden awe.

Between them and the three lay three, equally spaced plates of grey plaster – or perhaps it was stone, Ginny could not tell. Without looking at Malfoy, she stepped on the first. She took another step, but realized she could not go forward – facing her was an invisible barrier that rendered all efforts to move ahead null.

“There’s a barrier here,” she told him, very dryly.

He smirked. “I can tell.”

When Ginny glared at him, he only grinned rather nastily in response. “You're blind, aren't you, Weasley?” he asked coldly and, as he spoke, he pointed to her feet.

She bit back a retort, looked down -- and jumped off the plate as she realized huge, black lines were beginning to slither up its plaster. The lines expanded, a swirl of black that seemed to stare out at her with impassive eyes, and then they joined, taking their time, until they were half-letters, until they were full letters that read:

I desire the proof of your magic.

“The proof of magic?” Ginny wondered out loud. Haudrey had mentioned riddles, but such a type, the redhead had not expected. But of course - what larger proof of her magic there was, than she herself? With a smile of quick comprehension, Ginny stepped on the plate, and waited for the barrier to give way.

Nothing happened.

In the sunlight, the writing glowed, bold as ever, and the barrier remained, tall, impenetrable in its invisibility. All of a sudden, Draco strode forward, and pushed her roughly aside. She landed in the grass, unhurt but angry.

“If it doesn’t accept me, it won’t accept you either, Malfoy!” she began furiously, but he paid her no attention. To her surprise, he did not step on the plate but knelt down besides it, laying his wand at its top and placing besides it, his left hand. There was a moment of silence and then, to Ginny's astonishment, the lines began to detach from each other... swirled... vanished into nothingness.

He stood up, picked up his wand, and looked over at her, a smirk playing around his handsome mouth. “That was easy, Weasley.”

How the HECK had he known that? Ginny straightened to her full height. “How did you know?” she demanded suspiciously.

“Your antics gave me the hint, dimwit. A proof of your magic – if it isn’t a witch or wizard, than it has to be their wand. But I decided it couldn’t be a wand because “experience” tells me muggles can sometimes get possession of wands, too -" He smirked at this statement - "The only possible solution I could come up with was that it had to be both, the person and their wand, so I tried it, Weasley.”

Smoothly, he stepped over the first plate and, furious that she had been outwitted by him, Ginny followed. Draco placed a foot on the second plate, and lines sprung to life once more. The words on the second plate read:

I desire the proof of your mortality.

Proof of mortality? But the only way to prove that would be to... A lump rose in Ginny’s throat: this was a dead-end.

“You know, Weasley,” and now Malfoy was twirling his wand between his fingers. “I could kill you – the stone would let me pass.”

She looked up at him, a flicker of horror in her eyes, but it did not linger, was replaced by immediate, angry fire. “Just think of trying and you’ll regret it for the rest of your life, Malfoy,” she said bitterly. At the back of her head, swirled angry colours, emotions that threatened to break out in a cloud of storm. “Just think of it and –”

“Shut up, Weasley, let me concentrate.”

“You –”

Ignoring her, he placed his wand at his temple and muttered something under his breath. A flowing stream of silver fluid came out, spiraling in the air, twisting upon itself like a double helix. Draco directed it to the plate, where it splashed like water, spilled all over in a stream of glittering argent.

Slowly but surely, the words on the plate began to disappear, and Ginny’s eyes narrowed. “What did you do?” she asked, and there was something threatening about her tones. If he tried - even thought of - outwitting her one more time, just ONE more time, she was going to whack his HEAD open.

His words stayed her thoughts.

“Fear of death,” he replied quietly, turning away from her. “It was a memory, Weasley, a recent memory. Immortal people cease to fear death, that’s a principle of nature.” There was something in his eyes she could not understand, but its intensity unsettled her in a strange way, made her fall into an unnerving silence.

For a long moment, Draco was quiet, upset to have remembered the day before - the panic he had felt when she had nearly died. It felt real even now, so very real that it alarmed him. Once more, it rose, the feeling that he cared, and once it sickened him, sickened him because he did not want t ocare.

“They cease to fear it even for others,” he said finally, and Ginny felt like his tones twisted her heart. “Forced immortality makes man or woman beastly – devoid of emotions. Mortal men and women fear death.” He was quiet again and then, all of a sudden, he shook himself out of his thoughts, and his voice was cold again - very cold. “Let’s go Weasley, there’s still a riddle to go.”

She shook herself out of the emotional disarray she had fallen into and, much as she tried, could not find words to respond with. In the end, she passed him in silence and, without a word, stepped on the last stone, where the lines formed to read:

I desire the proof of your love.

This – this was easy. Ginny breathed a sigh of relief, placed her wand at her temple, and had extracted a few memories of her loved ones before Draco could make the least of moves. They were painful images, quiet traces of those she held near to her heart, and they seemed to burn against her eyelids, and flutter in the depths of her heart. Like Draco's memories, hers splashed at the plate’s surface -- and then, to her surprise, they vanished into thin air, and the words on the plate remained.

“It’s not working,” she said quietly. Her throat was suddenly dry - she could not believe her brains had pretty much failed her, again. “Why isn’t it working?”

“Love,” he replied in a rather off-hand manner. “It’s supposed to be about love, Weasley, you can’t ask me – I don’t know anything about it. Unless, of course, you want to ask me the finer details of seduction.” He gave her a rather malevolent grin and, angry, she turned her head away.

Love, she thought to herself. He would not know of that, of course - or perhaps he did not want to know of it. No... she couldn't think about him right now. Love -- what is it? Think! It was something to experience from the depths of the heart, that Ginny knew too well - she suddenly missed Hogwarts more than ever, and the pang of memory rose like physical pain - but, at the same time, it was something that did not live on words alone – “Love is,” her mother had once said, “more practical than we imagine. At it truest, Ginny, it can only be proved through action.”

Practical? But -- Practical! She realized suddenly. The plate rejected memories, the silver traces of those she cared for, because it was talking of another kind of love – the truest kind, the kind that only actions can show.

Without thinking, without planning, she grabbed Draco, turned him around and kissed him, full on the lips.

Actually I read only one D/L, the only decent one I saw on HPFF, it's called One Mistake and it made me fall in love with the ship <333
