Our Iron Bridges
“Elaborately complex forms can arise from a small number of simple operations.”

He did not sleep. But perhaps did not was not the phrase: Draco Malfoy, try as he might, could not fall asleep. A minute passed, two, three, and then the seconds rolled into half an hour. He finally forced himself to sit up, look to his left – her breathing was regular, and he could tell she was fast asleep.

He stood up, his mind a jumble of feelings he had never felt before. He had thought he hated her but, ever since he had been alone with her, things had changed. He had never had to look out for anyone before, never experienced the feeling that there was someone who needed him, not as an accomplice but as... himself. It did not help that she was the kind of fiery that pulled him, made him want to know her better.

Did he love her? He could not say he did, but he knew he had only broken off the kiss because, had it continued any longer, he would not have been able to let her go. It scared him to know how badly he wanted her, scared him because he had never needed anything like this, before.

And she? Did she love him? Of course she did not, he told himself, he would be foolish to think she might. She was a Weasley, and the Weasley-Malfoy enmity was ages old. She was also a muggle-lover, a supporter of everything he did not support – and she hated the Dark Arts. If truth be told, he did not love the Dark Arts himself, but he liked the power, the hold they promised. But she would not understand that – she would not understand him.

... Could Ginny Weasley love him?

No, a small voice in the back of his head said quietly. Ginevra Weasley could never love him. He would be a huge fool if he thought that kiss meant anything – the open, the wind, the water, they were things that stirred people, and the kiss had just been a natural result of that. She did not care for him, and it would be best, he decided, to act as if nothing had ever happened between the two of them - any action to the contrary would only be the equivalent of massive folly. With a shake of his head, Draco pushed it all to the very back of his mind, and turned his attention to the more pressing of the time-turner, a difficulty he had momentarily forgotten, what with all the stray donkeys and magic-hunters and fires and midnight snogs.

That he did not possess the ability to repair the instrument, of that Draco was sure. But was there someone – might there be someone – who did? The answer to that question was, Draco was certain, Bowman Wright. The man was influential in the magical world of the age he was in; and there was no doubt that, if any powerful wizard or witch of the kind Draco needed existed, Bowman would know of him or her. The man might even himself be the person Draco needed.

The last thought made Draco shake his head with disapproval, at the ease with which he had let Bowman get rid of him. It was clear, now, that he needed to find the Head of the Department of Magical Games and Sports, once more.

The question was – how?


When she woke up, Ginny Weasley had a pounding headache which, surprisingly, went away the moment she sat up and looked around. The first thought that came to her was that it was clearly late in the morning (the sun shone feebly); the second that she had actually managed to sleep through what seemed like a heavy downpour (all was wet, including her own self); and the third that the last thing she had done before falling asleep was to kiss Draco Malfoy, full on the lips.

Her stomach turned as she remembered the kiss, and the memory made her look around once more. The fire had died down somewhere in the middle of the night, and the spot where he had lain the night before, lay empty. He was nowhere around and, for a moment of panic, she thought he had gone, left her there. Then she saw his figure in the far distance, the black robes immaculate as always, and breathed a sigh of relief. She was glad that he had his back to her, and did not even wonder what he was doing. All she knew was that she was glad he could not see her, did not know she was awake.

Why had she kissed him? Had she kissed him because she liked him? But no, he was the son of a death-eater; she could not possibly love him. But she did! Oh, she did! It was sudden and confusing and –

“Weasley.”

Ginny looked up and swallowed the lump that rose in her throat. When had he come over? She pushed herself to her feet, not meeting his eye. “What’s the problem, Malfoy?”

“I found a peach-tree.”

She was not sure if she liked the business-like tones of his voice, but she said nothing, only accepted the large peach he threw unceremoniously at her. After having had nothing to eat for hours, it felt even better than it actually was, and they ate in silence until she felt it was necessary to break it.

“Malfoy?”

“Weasley?”

“About last night –”

“An accident,” he cut through coldly. She had never heard him sound so cold before. “It was an accident – I must have temporarily lost my brains. Sight, too,” he added, as if the last words were an ingenious afterthought. He stood up, cleaned his hands against the sides of his jeans. “There’s a potion my father makes, Weasley, and it’s Dark Arts to the core. But it can help us find Bowman Wright, and that’s the man we need to find if we want to get back in time.”

Ginny’s stomach did a horrible, very unpleasant somersault. An accident? The words seemed to burn her, until she realized what else he had just said. With an effort, she forced herself to sound as cold as him. “Bowman Wright?" How could she not know that name? Quidditch was a huge chunk of her life. "Isn’t that the name of the guy who invented the Golden Snitch?”

“I met him,” Draco said curtly and, ignoring the sudden surprise on her face, gave her a brief, rather rough account of what he had been through yesterday. “The man’s gone, but I’m pretty sure he can lead us to someone who can help us. I need to whip up a potion to find him.”

For several seconds, Ginny was silent, a little jealous, too, that he had managed to meet Bowman Wright - the Bowman Wright! - despite the rush of feelings that twisted her heart. Finally, and with an effort, she nodded at him. “Fine. Fine, Malfoy -- I’ll go along with your plan as long as it doesn’t involve chopping up Bowman, or whatever else you death-eaters do.”

Whatever else you death-eaters do. The words scorched, but Malfoy did not let her see that. “Oh, nothing is going to happen to Wright,” he said, running his lips over his mouth. There was a malevolent, most unsettling glint in his eye, and Ginny did not like it one bit. She wanted to stand there, scream her head off at him, demand why he had kissed her if he hated her so much, saved her if he wanted nothing but to be a jerk towards her. But she couldn’t. She couldn't! All she could do was look at him, lips pursed, hands cold, a blaze of anger in her almond-shaped eyes.

“Let’s go, Weasley, we have to find our ingredients.” He smirked, turned around to leave, and Ginny could hold it in no longer. She grabbed his hand, and tried to force him to look at her. Furiously, he broke free of her grip – strong as it was, he was stronger, much stronger.

“Don’t touch me, you filthy blood-traitor!”

Hands on hips, she glared at him. “Why did you kiss me?”

“I said it was an accident!” He turned away from her and began to walk off. Ginny stood her ground, far angrier than she looked.

“Accidental kisses don’t happen for that long, Malfoy!”

He turned to face her, and there was something about his face that she did not understand – something taunting, something jeering, something... indescribable. “Listen, Weasley.” His voice was both very calm and very, very cold, his tones without the least trace of anger. “I’ve been away from humankind for God knows how many hours, not seen a girl in what feels like ages. A place like this –” he waved a hand at their surroundings – “A place like this, and weather like we had last night, it makes one do a lot of strange things. It was a good opportunity to have some fun, and you let me so I did.”

He turned away again and stalked off. For a moment, Ginny’s hands were cold, her frame numb. He doesn’t like me, she realized, and it hurt to know that the realization hurt. He used me, and I let him. He... HE USED ME AND I LET HIM! For what seemed like a long while, she did not know what to do.

Then, cold, sad, angry, she walked after him into the depths of the forest, resolved never again to let him within five feet of herself.
