| | |  Astronomy Lesson 1 :: Seasons & Solstices
The brilliant colors of the sunset have been painted over by the mystical navy blue of the night sky and as you enter the Astronomy classroom you can see the moon clearly through one of the many windows. The desks are arranged in their usual semi circle to help created a more personal environment, only something seems a bit off as you go to sit down. Both the desk and chair wobble as the legs on one side are longer than the other and cause you to lean quite a bit. Try not to fall out of your seat or have your things fall to the floor, yes?
Did you remember to use the lint roller on the small table outside of the classroom? It was there next to the sign that reads, "Not to be used as a brush for your hair."
A lamp, a quaffle, and 3 can lids painted black rest in the middle of the professor's desk. Professor Flamsteed, wearing the same top hat you may have spotted him with at the Opening Feast, can be seen standing to the right of his desk with a giddy expression on his face and offers you a salute as you move to take your seat.
So come on in and have a seat. Class will begin shortly.

Ascanius rolled right into winter. His feet weren't even on the ground. No, he was actually just hurling across the room desperately trying to gain his footing instead. It hadn't happened so far. The seventh year could dream.
He rolled, flopping all around in the bubble, straight into winter. One minute a fall chill was brushing against his cheeks and the next a winter blizzard was slapping him around. On top of no control over the bubble. This was the worst assignment ever. EVER, Flammy.
If his face had one mark on it he was going to freak out.
And just when things couldn't get any worse...
THWAAAAK.
More random, out-of-control spinning.

"Whoa!!," Cris watched as Professor Flamsteed managed to dodge a collision with him. This man had some serious dodging skills....either that he had lots of experience being inside this costume. Since the latter sounded almost ridiculous, Cris decided to go with the former.
Well at least, that was one collision averted. Cris had actually visualized both of them slamming into each other like two large Sumo wrestlers and then bouncing off on impact. Not relishing the idea of going back a couple of seasons especially Summer, Cris began running forward again while keeping a close watch on the swinging pendulum...which was again heading towards him.
However, he was prepared now. Maneuvering his costume in a forward momentum, he only made a slight adjustment to the right as he watched the pendulum swing past, missing him entirely.
Autumn, here I come!

Theo was soon VERY cold, which could only mean that he had made it to winter. By total accident, of course. He was only trying to avoid the people rather than actually looking where he was going. But now he was pretty focused, because winter was his least favourite, and he hated being cold.
Adjusting his position a little, Theo headed straight forwards inside his ball with his game face on. It was a funny feeling to be walking properly in this thing and he slipped straight over onto the floor. WOOOooooooooooah he was spinning out of control!!!!
AGGHHGHHH... PENDULUM.
OOOOOOOMPTH.
This activity was STUPID.

...and when the pendulum did brush across her planet ball, it ever-so-slightly rolled Sophie right on into Spring. THANK MERLIN!
The snow quickly melted, paving the way for Sophie to move much, much faster and easier. Pretty soon, all the snow was melted, and a single, yellow flower had grown right in its place. This made Sophie smile. This was one of the reasons Spring was her favorite season. It represented an awakening of the world, and everything looked so pretty and brand new.
She had to roll on, though. The season changing didn't mean the pendulum as suddenly out of the way, so if Sophie didn't move she could get--or mis-interpret Earth's movements in the skies. So she rolled on, all the while continuing to enjoy the pretty Spring weather inside her planet ball.

Marigold jumped forwards to avoid the pendulum behind her, and fell into winter. It was definitely winter because it began snowing immediately after she landed, white flurries falling on her hair. She trudged through, the snows falling quicker and quicker until she could hardly see anymore. She dodged a person. Or was that the pendulum? All she could focus on was getting to spring. | |

Oh look! More ice. FUUUUUUUUUN.

Grumbling to himself, Grayson continued running, his feet occasionally slipping and sliding on the snow that was slowly becoming ice under his feet. He didn't know if he was running in the right direction because the bubble was still pretty much in the winter months. It was starting to feel like a winter that was dragging on. The snow was great and the boy wanted to chuck a couple of snowballs here and there but this ice? Jeez. Go away, please? He didn't want to be seen FALLING in his bubble.
And that's exactly what happened.
No sooner had he thought about charging forwards in what he hoped was the right direction, his left foot slipped on the patches of ice on the floor of the bubble, sending him toppling. Jeez, what was this game?! Dodgeball was meant to be FUN. HELLO?! It had started off fun enough but he really wasn't liking this development. Somebody could be laughing at him right as he spoke.
His breath was still fogging up the surface of the bubble and the ice was slowly starting to turn into water. Slowly. His eyes widened as drops of ice cold water dropped down on him and his clothes. Sweet MERLIN, he was going to look like a mess! The sooner he got this done the better. He wanted out of this season, thank you very much.
At least he had managed to avoid the pendulum. So far.

How many times does this Seventh Year have to go around in a circle. Four at most because of four seasons was Nigel's guess. Made sense. But maybe they will keep going in a circle until Flameo told them to stop. Which would be cruel and unusual punishment. At least it was now summer and Nigel could enjoy it.
The heat was not too humid or burning his skin.
Once this season ended, Nigel was basically done. He was more than willingly to let the pendulum hit him and move him around the room. Then Nigel can just watch and be amused.
Just go with the flow

He came in like a wrecking ball. Literally. Straight into Spring. He was so close to screaming and yelling some not so nice words when the snow had stopped. And for the first time all activity Ascanius gained his footing. Spring. What a welcome sight it was, yeah? 'Sides if he was going to be STUCK in a bubble at least it was Spring time. He was dreading the stickiness of summer.
With a little more footing, he was able to out maneuver the swinging thing of stupid.
He rolled himself straight. Y'know, for a while. But this was Astronomy and nothing ever went well for the Seventh Year in this class. And so, just as he was about to pass into Summer, another student SLAMMED into him.
JEEZ, COULD HE CATCH A BREAK.
No....he was rolling away from Summer...no wait....c'mon...come back....

Adrienne was not prepared for the first snowflake to hit her face and melt into a cold drop of water on her skin, and she flinched at the feeling, trying to dodge the next few flakes that fell from the top of her ball. And- she reached out a hand to check, the slippery wall in front of her confirming it- her ball was now coated with ice! She was shivering in her now-damp robes, but at least she had made it into winter, which meant she was almost halfway done with this godawful activity.
She rolled forward carefully, noticing that snow kept falling from upwards, no matter where upwards moved to. Adrienne was still making distressed "Aaaah," noises under her breathe when she bumped into people or got too off track, but she seemed to be getting the hang of it now. In fact, while she still hated that it was winter, she was beginning to enjoy all of the rolling. She might have to get herself one of these things, so she could adjust her own personal climate and forcibly keep people out of her personal space bubble.

Stupid pendulum. Theo had actually fallen over after making impact with it. He got back up very quickly, gave it a quick glare and studied his general self to see which season he was in.
Still in winter. Of course he was. Luck was RARELY on his side during classes.
Theodore shuddered a bit but was eager to press on. He went back to his vigorous avoiding of students tactic, and it seemed to be working quite well. People were always such obstacles. Ugh. AHHH THE PENDULUM. Theo jumped a mile and managed to dodge it. In fact his jump was so big that he was convinced things had warmed up in here....
OOH, had he made it to the next season?!

Spring was here!
All the snow melted away but was now replaced by rain. Lots of it too. Jun just needed to make it to summer and he could finally be done with this. It's as if Flamsteed wanted them to get a workout since all the chairs were breaking. And the professor was rolling himself too. Jun sprinted into a run again and proudly ignored the water that was now accumulating in his orb. No need for a panic attack right now. The faster he moved, the sooner he'd be able to get out of this activity and flop onto the floor. That had been the reason since the first finishing his first autumn turn.
Just as Jun was reaching the next season, the pendulum almost sent him flying again but just missed. Instead, the orb began spinning uncontrollably. "SWEET MERCIFUL MERLIN, MAKE IT STOP!" Jun was at least trying to make the orb spin towards the next season. But that wasn't working out too well for him. FORWARD. FORWARD. FORWARD! The orb managed to finally stop spinning and Jun decided to just roll his way towards summer. Hopefully all this water would be gone by then.

Benny had given up answering the questions, instead simply listening and thinking over what answers his classmates. And taking notes on the subject of course, especially if the professor agreed with what was being said or added anything else to the conversation. He would now doubt need to know such things either for later in class and also for any homework associated with the lesson.
Before long they were asked to get up from their seats, the activity obviously about to get more complicated and adventurous. The third watched as the desks and belongings were banished to the outside of the room and each of them was suddenly within this individual clear moveable spheres. Planets he supposed by Flamsteed's explanations. Of this was going to be fun, he mused as he watched the pendulum start swinging. His sarcasm level would be determined by how it actually all went by the end of the lesson.
Okay….start with autumn.
Ben made his way to where the others had started having fallen a little behind trying to take it all in. Was it just him or did he just feel a slight breeze within his little bubble? He paused trying to pick a good point to head out on. One could only wish for not too much trouble when already classmates were getting hit. Not to mention this suit wasn’t the easiest to move in. Finally rolling a bit starting his orbit, the third year noticed his feet crunching as he moved. A glance downwards alerting him to leaves suddenly there.

His body jerked again when the pendulum hit him once more. And while it was a cause of discomfort-- a LOT of discomfort Flammy-- at least he was back on track to going to summer. If only the first years and other students would get OUT of his way. Jeez, he just wanted out of the bubble. He wanted out this assignment.
Ascanius rolled into summer nearly avoiding a stray first year and the sticky, sweet smell of summer penetrated his senses. As did the unbearable heat with no wind. Was it hot in here? Yeah. And the bubble wasn't helping the insulation.
Get him OUT.

The Professor hadn't trampled her YET which was a relief because he seemed to be more into causing destruction than completing orbits. She sort of liked that, actually. Adding even MORE of a challenge to this activity. Meant people would have to work extra hard and Maddie LIKED challenges and working hard. That's what winners did, yeah? Worked hard and showed their stuff to others. And okay, she didn't know what exactly her stuff WAS just yet but she KNEW she had lots to show. She was clearly an EXTREMELY gifted individual.
On she went, rolling her planet along the orbit path and trying not to take out classmates or be taken out by the pendulum again. P.S. she WASN'T sweating. She was glistening A LOT but no sweating HERE. It was super hot, though. And she felt sort of tired now that she'd orbited several times already. Were they almost done? She could use a break AND a cold drink.

Bree picked herself up out of the slush and felt shivering cold. Then she thought she heard the professor, she could barely tell what he was saying with the storm she was in. She sighed as she started walking foward slowly, her feet getting stuck in the snow. She soon saw the pendulum coming again. She tried to dodge it but the snow was too tough and she soon went flying which for the first seccond felt terrifying but after it was a jolt of awesome. She hit the barrier and then fell into white slush again. She trudged her way through it till there was less and less snow in her path. She knew spring could not be far off.

Jeez, this was horrible. And trying to stand up again in the bubble was proving to be difficult since the ice was making it hard to stay standing for longer than a couple of seconds. He was starting to hate snow and it was because of this lesson. Thank YOU, Astronomy. You have completely ruined a whole season for him. Must be REAAAAAAAAAAAALLY proud of yourself. Hmph.
Just when he thought that things couldn't get worse, the boy started to feel something in the pit of his stomach and his throat. Maybe it was because he was being hurtled to his death this way and that but the feeling of motion sickness was settling in. And he was in a BUBBLE. It was bad enough that the melting snow was falling on him but if it was mixed with puke, he was going to leave. Really. Dramatically and all.
And was it him or was it getting warmer in here?
It was! Grayson blinked a couple of times and looked around at the bubble. Even with the motion, he could still spot the fact that the snow had melted away, and so had the ice. Merlin, YES. The fourteen year old stumbled into a standing position and tried to get back into the jogging when it started raining. Not the light rain that would bounce onto his punny biceps and make him look dashing. None of that. This was the kind of rain where, within a few seconds, the boy found himself soaked to the skin. Soaked and freezing. Freaking weather. WHY WAS IT ALWAYS HIM?!
Shivering slightly in his costume, the boy failed to notice the green grass that was starting to grow or the fact that the air was filled with a mixture of rain on earth. Or maybe Grayson didn't care. It was one of the two. A good sign out of all of this was that he was able to start jogging again. Jogging properly. Maybe he was going in the right direction. The salty water wasn't doing much for his sickness but it did wash off the last of the snow. And, after a while, it didn't even end up feeling that bad or cold.
Summer? Was that coming up very soon? Please say yes.

Caleb was quite enjoying the flowers in his orb - he wasn't allergic to pollen or anything so it was just nice, strolling around in the nice flowery smell. Then as he started running again, the flowers started to disappear and were replaced with...sand! White sand! He could hear seagulls squawking in his ears even though there weren't any around, and he could smell coconuts and salt water as he ran. It was nice and warm - not too hot, not too cold. Could he stay in this bubble forever?!

Whoa, this seemed intense. And fun if there weren't so many of them that were trying to do it all at the same time. That just made it harder and more complicated.
Also, these leaves. They were really distracting and flying all over the place and hitting her in the face every time Penelope tried to move in this bubble. and it was annoying. She blew yet another one out of her face as she moved this thing forward. At least the temperature in here was decent. Not too hot, not too cold, though slightly on the chilly side. But moving kinda helped with that.
If only there were no falling leaves, this would be perf-
THWACK!
The pendulum thing hit her right in the side of her bubble, knocking her back against the invisible barrier before rolling forward a bit with her sprawled on the bottom of the bubble.
Gahhh, Merlinnn, this was freaky. She tried to scramble back onto her feet as she thankfully got closer to the next season.

Spring on planet Zanderia was complete chaos. Yes the weather was all nice and pretty. But the pollen wasn't. And the bees. And the butterflies. So naturally, the boy was trying to get out of this season once and for all. Using the image of a sunny summer as his motivation, the boy continued to run his current lap around the "sun".
ACHOOOOOOOOOOOO.
Not again. Sneezing once more, Zander tumbled on to the other end of his planet. Before he knew it planet Zanderia was flying the complete opposite direction. This was not in the plans. He was getting so close. And now back to the beginning of the route. GAH. Stupid pollen

Beverly was already dreaming about water...cool, sweet water. Hair stuck to her face like little tentacles, she tried to remind herself of the 'mission' she was on. Only a few more steps...rolls...whatever, and she'd get there. As she rubbed the back of her hand over her forehead the snake forgot the thing she'd been attempting to run from, and--BAM!
The fourth year was thrown to the side of her planet suit, while mumbling a garbled and very dramatic, "Noooo!" her arms outstretched to hold on to something as her planet bubble hit the boundary. She lay sprawled out at the bottom of her suit as it came to a wobbly stop. Planet maneuvering wasn't easy, and her arms and legs were getting quite the workout. Not that she minded, but the heat...UGH the HEAT.
CRRRACK-THUMP!
Beverly sat up, startled. Oh no. Oh, holy Fawkes no! That wasn't--BOOM!
It WAS. The Slytherin hurried up onto her feet, her hands pressing on the suit to make it move forward. THUNDER. Screw the mission, she was OUT! Beverly Juniper did NOT do thunder. Ever. Frantically pushing onward, she jumped at another BOOM! and let out a squeak. NO. Just no. Rolling forward, she shoved her way through. Goodbye, losers!

That pendulum had it in for Theo.
And it was really difficult to watch that thing as well as other students, since there was SO many of them. Where was the professor floating around? Theo wouldn't mind bumping him for making this annoying activity. Perhaps that could be on the agenda after he finished this thing. He had thought correctly earlier, and had finally made it out of winter and into what he figured was spring.
What even was spring?
Only seasons Theo knew details on were summer and winter.
But it felt tolerable, and most importantly it meant one step closer to summer. He pressed on forwards, dodged the pendulum again, but didn't do so well at avoiding it when it came back. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSH... knocking him right off course and straight onto the ground. Theo sat there for a moment and let out an extremely put out SIGH.
And then he got up and just rolled. Rolled like his life depended on it.

The leaves continued to fall, and Kyroh was getting used to it. But suddenly the leaves stopped, and the ones on the floor of the costume were turning brown and withered. Taking a break from running the first year began to stomp on the withered leaves because - they were the BEST kind to stomp on!! Once the pendulum came into view again Kyroh once again took off and the air seemed to grow colder?
He knew what this was. WINTER!
It was probably not a second after the thought entered his brain that the snow began falling. First small light snowflakes but then they quickly turned fat and heavy. Packing snow. And then the wind picked up again, blowing the snow all over, blocking his view, and sending shivers down his spine. "D-d-don't like winter with no jacket." Winter with no jacket was not cool. Serving out of the way of the Pendulum was going to get him. Again. He just KNEW it, especially cause he couldn't see. Slowly down just a bit Kyroh titled his head up and opened his mouth.
If that pendulum was going to get him he might as WELL taste some snowflakes before it did. Plus summer had made him thirsty, and snow was kind of water so YEAH.
The cold air seemed to blow right through his bones, and once Kyroh had tasted enough snowflakes he plopped down in the snow and began to crawl. HE WAS TOO COLD TO WALK. This was easier.

And while he did genuinely want to help the Ravenclaw, his want wasn't entirely selfless. Tears freaked the man out.

Jasmine was so close to the finish line she could almost taste it. She knew that she couldn't just leave the girl so she turned and made a beeline for her bubble.
Rolling up beside Penelope Jasmine asked, "What's wrong?" To top things off it was raining inside Penelope's bubble and she was borderline hysterical. Maintaining a calm tone, Jasmine said, "Penelope look at me". "You're going to be OK. Just try to relax and breathe. The rain will stop when you get to your next season. You've got to keep moving, but first you have to calm down. I'll help you if you want. You can follow me." Jasmine continued to speak soothingly to Penelope, hoping that she would be able to regain control and finish the task.
Penelope looked at Jasmine, took a few deep breaths, stopped crying, and calmed down a little. "Jasmine, I'm claustrophobic. I'm not sure if I want to stay inside this thing," Penelope said. Having calmed down, Penelope thought about it some more. "I think I'll try to finish the activity, and follow you." | |
