Default Astronomy Lesson 1 :: Seasons & Solstices

The brilliant colors of the sunset have been painted over by the mystical navy blue of the night sky and as you enter the Astronomy classroom you can see the moon clearly through one of the many windows. The desks are arranged in their usual semi circle to help created a more personal environment, only something seems a bit off as you go to sit down. Both the desk and chair wobble as the legs on one side are longer than the other and cause you to lean quite a bit. Try not to fall out of your seat or have your things fall to the floor, yes?

Did you remember to use the lint roller on the small table outside of the classroom? It was there next to the sign that reads, "Not to be used as a brush for your hair."

A lamp, a quaffle, and 3 can lids painted black rest in the middle of the professor's desk. Professor Flamsteed, wearing the same top hat you may have spotted him with at the Opening Feast, can be seen standing to the right of his desk with a giddy expression on his face and offers you a salute as you move to take your seat.

So come on in and have a seat. Class will begin shortly.

Lesson Progression
question 1 :: what is your favorite season and why?
question 2 :: why does the Earth have seasons?
question 3 :: why does the fact that the Earth is tilted on its axis matter to our weather?
question 4 :: what do June 21 and December 21 have in common?
question 5 :: how could you prove that the Earth is spinning?
activity :: PENDULUM DODGEBALL
clarification! :: clarifying instructions & professor joins the game
start wrapping up :: 6 ish hour warning before activity ends!
class dismissed!
OOC: Please be sure you are familiar with Professor Flamsteed's rules BEFORE you post in this lesson. We will know if you haven't read them! All SnitchSeeker site rules apply.

This lesson has officially started! Please do not announce your character arriving late and just pretend like they have been in class all along. You are free to jump in any time and should use the lesson progression links to keep up.

We have discussed briefly how our ancestors, those ancient astronomers we are all decedents of, would look to the sky and theorize about just what is going on up there. I want you all to imagine you are one of these astronomers for a moment. How could you prove that the Earth is spinning? No spaceships allowed or meteorologists, obviously."

OOC: Class will resume in approximately 10 hours from the time of this post.

This is the last Q&A section of the lesson, so I hope you all choose to stick around and play for the activity :3

Leah's had was already bursting with all the information given, and was glad that this was the last question before the activity, whatever that might be. She was hoping for something that involved jumping onto desks and singing, just like what the professor did a few minutes ago.

So, imagine if she were an astronomer... Leah raised her hand finally. "I would see the stars slowly moving, and conclude that it is the Earth that is spinning, not the stars." Because she saw twinkle twinkle little stars moving along slowly a lot of times when she stared out of the window at night.

Gareth shifted on his seat. Was he feeling eyes on him? They wouldn't dare!! He was the only one who could examine people the way he wanted. He never said others were allowed to stare at him. The Slytherin looked around and finally saw Kanna looking at him. He raised his eyebrows at her. What was the matter pretty hair? Maybe she was wondering if he was eating the sugar quills she had dropped for him. Maybe..he was doing that. Maybe.

More eyebrow raising at the professor when he literally jumped on his desk. Seriously? Gareth didn't know how to figure out if the Earth was spinning by himself without using anything yet it was clear that the Earth spinning melted this man's brain somehow.

Then he looked back at Kanna when he heard her speaking. Really? Of course she sounded like she had swallowed an Astronomy book for she was a Ravenclaw. Or wherever else she had learned "that thing" she was talking about. Had to be a book her pretty face obviously had swallowed.

Gareth snorted. "It's simple. Find a Gryffindor and a Ravenclaw. Tell the Gryffindor that you need to find out if the earth is spinning and everyone's lives depends on it. Tell the Ravenclaw that the Gryffindor needs to do something but obviously they lack the necessary literal knowledge. Then sit back and watch as they make a complete fool of themselves."

Angel looked at the professor before raising her hand and smiled at her sister Aubrey, she was wondering if they could work together when they started doing the activity, she thought it would be fun if they could. "Professor the clouds move." Angel smiled. "They are formed by power stations, and they have to get up there some how and if they didn't move then they would be steam all over this one place." Angel thought it was odd how the power station formed the clouds. "But as you look into the sky you see all sort of different stuff in the clouds, some look like rabbits, others look like cats and other look like well all sort of different thing."

Lucy raised her wand and she said:" I'm an astronomer in bud..but I Know a little the sea because I grew up in a seaside town and the phenomenon of the tides is related to the Earth's spinning..The tides are caused by attraction that the Sun and the Moon have on the Earth. The Moon, being closer has a greater influence that the Sun..The force of attraction is felt on all over our planet especially on liquid particles that move more easily than the solid!"

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Too much yelling made his head hurt....

Kevin sat in his chair, a bored expression on his face. Theory was so boring, when did they get to do the actual practical thing?! Because practical in Astronomy was usually really fun. Though the Gryffindor would NEVER admit that out loud.

Turning his attention back to the Professor as he asked the next question, the second year thought about the answer when he heard someone make fun of the Gryffindor and Ravenclaws. Well, he didn't care about the Ravenclaws...but he DID care about the Gryffindors being insulted like that. He shot a GLARE in the direction of the older Slytherin (Gareth) . "Shut it, Snake Head!" he called.

Now, back to the question. ...What was the question again? Ah yes how they would have known if the earth spun or not. "The stars movement?" he answered.

Sophie looked over at Gareth with a impression expression on her face. So he'd made a Gryffindor pretty mad, but hey--he was HILARIOUS about it. best answer so far. Well done.

Anyway...

Sophie pieced together an answer in her mind then raised her hand. "Is it because things like stars aren't always in the same place? Like...if you mapped the constellations, they wouldn't always be in the exact same place. They'd appear to moving around in the universe, right?" she replied. "So maybe they observed that and figured out things from there."

How could you prove the earth is moving? Maddie tapped her chin thoughtfully and then raised her hand high into the air. "You COULD stick someone's shoes to the ground and then watch their shadow and how it changes over the course of the day!" See? She was brilliant. She'd also like to do this to Vinny because he was particularly antsy and didn't like staying in one place for too long. PLUS her brother liked to take ALL the good pieces of chicken at dinner AND he never shared his sweets with her. He was the PERFECT test subject as far as Maddie was concerned.

She glanced at the student next to her to give a knowing look before answering.

"No other way of explain seasons. Different sunlight, not all direct from angles," Mari tried, struggling to explain the message she wanted to get across. Okay, so she was wrong even when she'd acted like a know-it-all. So?

Gwen raised her hand, laughing at the professor's antics. He really loved this stuff. "I don't think you really can prove it. I think that there could be a bunch of different explanations for why the stars move and the sun in the sky and the solstices and stuff." She wasn't making sense. She paused to organize her thoughts. "I mean, there's not really solid proof without things like pictures and maybe magic." Could magic somehow tell them the Earth was moving?

COULD MAGIC STOP THE EARTH FROM MOVING? The question struck her brain like lightning. She started to ask it, but stopped herself before any words were out. It wasn't really pertinent to the question. Gwen squirreled that question away for further exploration on her own time.

Smirking, the professor crossed his arms proudly across his chest and chuckled under his breath. "You can prove it and you don't even need magic to do so."

He didn't know the answer to this next question either, though. But he'd give it a shot!

"'Cause we get dizzy sometimes!" Did he need a demonstration? Dima volunteered!
Oh? He wasn't going to get to hear about this Cuckoo festival...whatever? Alas.

"You will be getting real dizzy here in just a bit," he replied with a knowing smile. Soon.

The smirk was quickly replaced with a slight frown at the Ravenclaw's response. "If only it worked that way," he said with a heavy sigh. "Many of the world's greatest astronomers did not live to see the day that their theories and discovers were accepted because what they had proven, or paved the way to prove, went against the status quo of their time."

There was some serious eyebrow raising going on with the Slytherin's answer. SERIOUS eyebrow raising. "Are you implying that Gryffindors are dim-witted Mr. Striker?" STARE.

And then Mr. Hirase happened. "Not necessary, Mr. Hirase," he scolded, his blue eyes snapping to the boy. No need to prove the Slytherin's point, you know.

Her wand. Her wand was up. Why was her wand up?

The professor was far too focused on the fact that the Gryffindor was raising her wand that he missed the first half of what she was saying and only really tuned back in when she was speaking about liquid particles and solids and.........

Did she need to use the loo? She could, just ask...you know?

What?

"Very interesting," he nodded, nervous smile on his face, as he moved along.

She wasn't really sure, honestly - the guess she thought was obvious was to look at the stars in the sky over time, but she wasn't sure if that was an actual way. How could the astronomers differentiate between whether the earth was spinning or if it was the distant stars and stuff moving around?

Mo's answer put into words her thought processes better than she could've verbalized it just yet, and she hoped he was right. He was a clever seventh year Ravenclaw, so he was probably pretty close, right? Sophie stayed silent and nodded once in agreement with his answer. It sounded logical and made plenty of sense to her, so she was rooting for his success.

She was further distracted by the fact that she'd managed to knock her ink all over her parchment in her flail for balance. Sigh. Ana did hear his question though, but she wasn't really sure how she'd prove that the Earth rotated. If she was going off more modern times she'd definitely suggest using the Foucault Pendulum experiment. She'd done it a few times herself and although it wasn't a hard experiment it did prove the point rather nicely that Earth moved. The only other way she could think of maybe proving it was through sunset and sunrise, but people had already said that.

Deciding that she really couldn't add anything to the conversation at the moment Ana simply wrote her thoughts, and the thoughts of others down on a fresh piece of parchment that she'd gotten out of her bag.

Though, he had to admit, at least to himself, that he wasn't exactly sure how to go about proving the earth was spinning. He had the similar instinct like the rest of his classmates to assume about the stars or the sun; yet, that didn't prove a thing about the EARTH. It could have very well have been the stars and the sun that were moving and not Earth.

So he was stumped. Huh. Seventh year didn't know everything. Not that he'd ever say so. Or say anything. At all. Ever.

Maybe that was him being a Seventh Year talking. Probably. Well Nigel had an answer to this question. But it was probably too inappropriate to say. So yeah. Best stay quiet and listen to all the textbook answers.

Maybe the activity will amuse him or maybe Flameo will jump up and dance some more.

Still in a little bit of a daze from Miss Petersfield and her answer, Airey managed to give those students choosing to be attentive listeners - or what he assumed was attentive listening and not day dreaming - a nod and a salute as he looked to the next group of raised hands.

How could they have known the earth was moving back then? Was possibly occurred in the night sky to prove that their little blue planet was turning on it's axis? Justine nibbled on her quill absentmindedly as she considered the tricky question... The cloud thing didn't make sense, it wasn't the earth moving that made clouds to by, but the wind... And she doubted it had anything to do with putting down a ball and watching it to see if it moved..

The stars didn't move though. They stayed exactly where they had always been and would continue to be until they one day exploded and formed black holes. There it was, there was the answer! "Sir! Zee constellations, zee stars do not move, yet zroogh out zee year, our ancestors vould 'ave noticed a difference in zee patterns of zee sky, and zat vould be zee vay to prove zee planet moved," Justine said, trying to bite back her triumphant smile as she spoke.

The girl was far too sure of herself, and didn't believe for a second that she could even remotely be wrong.

And not just night after night, but over time, year after year. Orion would move predictably across the sky one night, and then slightly differently the next, and slightly differently the next. Different constellations appeared during different times of the year, but they always came back year after year."

One more wouldn't make her brain dead and it might have been beneficial for the younger ones. Merlin knew some of them had some interesting answers.

Proving the earth moved without all the fancy stuff? She couldn't see why they'd need to but...

"Can you use the stars? The way they change positions at different times of the year and how you can't see some from certain months but in other months they're perfectly clear?"

Possibly.

On with the activity please, Mr. Petroleum?

And there was more nodding. "In theory yes, you all bring up things that could show that the Earth is spinning, but you may recall that this very same movement is what caused the geocentric model to be imagined by the ancient peoples as far back as 6th century BC when Aristarchus of Samos theorized that the Earth was a orb in space that rotated daily. Back then, however, everyone thought he was crazy and ignored his thoery and it was not until the 16th century that Nicolaus Copernicus presented a complete heliocentric model of the Solar System." He paused for a moment and walked a little more back towards his desk, looking out one of the many windows at the night sky that was clearly dotted with stars. "The movement of the stars does imply that there is some sort of motion occurring but, again, how can we really know if it is the stars moving or our planet? In fact, the first man made theory about the movement of the sun and stars was that the Earth was flat and they just popped up and down!"

SPOILER!!: cannonballs, other balls, shooting/throwing things into the air & Coriolis Effect

Raising his hand he gave his answer.

"Professor how about the Coriolis Effect? Doesn't it say that the effect is caused by the rotation of the Earth and the inertia of the mass experiencing the effect?" Cris paused to ask Professor Flamsteed.

"I remember reading an article that the effect was demonstrated in World War I when German soldiers discovered they needed to aim slightly to the left in order to hit their targets when shooting towards the south. I guess they found out that whenever fired, the cannonballs would somehow drift to the right. I guess that somehow showed proof that the earth was spinning."

But much of people's answers were the same, and so there was only so much to write while the Professor wasn't talking.

He looked over at a few of the faces he recognized as each student spoke. Mostly, he looked down at his desk. His... crooked... desk. Silas had tried to think up answers to the previous questions, but was always unsure about his answers, and so kept them to himself. Astronomy, again, was not the subject for him. It wasn't particularly boring, especially with Professor Airey. Not like Arithmancy. He just didn't do very well.

So when he had a revelation having to do with the rotation of the Earth that didn't focus on the stars, it struck him like a bag of hammers that he had a good answer, and the boy sat bolt upright in his seat and his hand flew up in excitement.

"U-uh," he started, despite his excitement. After all, there was a chance his answer could backfire horribly. "The different wind currents!" Um. No. That wasn't it, but that's what came out anyway; a prelude thought. "If you fire an object straight up into the air, even with no wind at all, it will never, ever, ever, come straight back down, because the Earth rotates, and in correlation to you standing still on the surface of the Earth, the object in the air will land differently from where it started."

He glanced over at the Ravenclaw girl he had met, Kanna, for no other reason than that he knew she was a Ravenclaw, and he was looking for a sign that his answer wasn't completely dumb. In any case, he was proud of it. Even if it was dumb. Or poorly phrased.

Because that's totally how the Earth's spinny thing worked. Right? Right?

"While 1914 may seem ancient to you, Mr. Strand, I was thinking of much further back in human history," he chuckled while also giving a small nod towards Mr. Toussaint who had clearly thought about the same concept since he had mentioned canons. "But yes, the Coriolis effect does help illustrate the rotation of the Earth and it is due to this rotation that objects in the Northern Hemisphere are deflected to the right and objects in the Southern Hemisphere are deflected to the left. However, these results are slightly imperceptible. Same with dropping an object down a shaft to see if there was any deflection, despite Newton's physics supporting the thought. There is a much stronger piece of evidence to support the idea of the Earth is spinning."

In his opinion anyway. He was slightly bias though.

SPOILER!!: PENDULUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUM!!

"Well," she started, as all smart-alecks started their answers. "By tracking patterns in the night sky, we can tell that all of the stars and planets-- even the sun and the moon, move in a rotational pattern. Nothing stays still. A long time ago, it would have been said that everything revolved around the Earth, and the Earth was still..."

But of course, this is not the case. She wondered, for a moment, why anyone could have ever been so literally self-centered to think that the entire universe revolved around one fixed point. "But with a special kind of pendulum-- uh..." she trailed off for a second... What were those things called? Ful--fol... foe... "A Foucault Pendulum," she finally broke through, with much pride in herself, "If built properly, and excepting at the equator, those kinds of pendulums will swing in accordance to the rotation of the Earth. And rotation varies, from season to season, which is why there is a longest and shortest day of the year, or why the sun changes positions in accordance to the seasons. It's because the Earth wobbles," she finished, to use an extremely scientific term.

Proud of herself, she looked back at Gareth to see if she had managed to annoy him with her answer, then back at Professor Airey, in the hopes that she had given him a satisfactory answer.

But if you have a big enough perfect pendulum with a big enough mass you can actually see its motion isn't just a back and forward swing, it will rotate at the same rate that the Earth does and gradually work around in a circle... kind of in a star shape if you happened to trace its path as it goes around. Little ones work too but you can't really sit there and watch because the movement is more slight so it would take longer to see that it has rotated all the way around."

Tora couldn't tell if Cutty had actually heard her question and smugly answered it later, or if he was truly just adding to part of the classroom discussion. She gave him a long side glance, and was going to whisper something to make sure it was clear that she, the space fanatic, knew more about space than he did but she couldn't think of anything appropriately witty. Besides, this was her favorite class and it was disrespectful to talk right? So instead of addressing her classmate directly, she raised her hand to answer Professor Flamsteed's latest question.

"There are a couple ways, I think, that someone could measure if the Earth was spinning on an axis. I'm sure there is some sort of spell that you could, I don't know, shoot into outer space that would theoretically stay in the same position in that space. Once it reappeared in the sky it would theoretically have been a year. To measure a day it would need to also orbit the sun at the same speed as the Earth." she started off throwing ideas out there, but stopped when she realized that she was rambling. Okay, enough with the creative portion of this answer. She knew the real answer to this from the Muggle science museum her mother and father had taken her and her siblings to over the summer. At least staying with her parents was useful for something. "But if you don't want to use magic, you could always create a pendulum that will swing with the Earth's rotation. I think that's how the Muggle's did it?" she wasn't sure on the specifics, it was still the summer when she had seen the huge pendulum at the museum and so the details were a bit foggy.

Make today's desk leaping count 14 as he jumped on to Miss Basthowe and did a brief tap dance routine. "Foucault pendulum!"

Ahem. Yes. Jumping off her desk now.

"Invented by Leon Foucault, a 19th century French physicist, the Foucault pendulum proves that the Earth is rotating," he said as he gave his wand a wave and conjured a floating model.

"The pendulum swings back and forth because of the force of gravity and the object's inertia and while it may appear as though the actual pendulum seems to change its path, it is the floor beneath it that moves as it is being twisted around by the daily rotation of earth"

Fascinating, wasn't it? THERE WAS MORE!

"I have a bit of a surprise for you all today," he grinned as his wand was out again and waving towards his desk and models, sending them to the back of the classroom and out of the way. With another swish of his wand, the very floor beneath them seemed to change and the outline of a large circle appeared with the edge of it just behind everyone's desks. Suddenly, a bright light appeared in the center of the circle and BAM! SNAP! a wire with a large ball attached to is descended from the ceiling of the classroom and began to swing back and forth behind the professor. TADA!

"We are going to play a game I like to call Pendulum Dogdeball in which you will be acting out all the concepts we have discussed today," he said while rocking back on his heals. "If you would all please stand so I can move your desks out of the way..." And once they had done so, he gave his wand another wave to banish them to the side of the classroom. "This magical light source will act as the Sun. It doesn't emit any real heat, so you don't need to worry about getting burned. You all will act as the planets that orbit the sun and, by doing so, will experience each of the four seasons as they would be felt in the Northern Hemisphere. Your costumes have been charmed to reflect these seasonal changes and you will all be starting at our current season of autumn." And they were probably wondering how they were going to accomplish this. With another wave of his wand, the astronomer conjured planetary costumes for each student. "Your goal is to complete one orbit around the sun, but just running around in circles is no fun, so you will also have to avoid the pendulum as it swings back and forth. I will charm things to speed up just a tad," he said with a mischievous grin. "You do not need to worry about being knocked out of the Astronomy Tower by the pendulum or one of your classmates as there is a magical barrier in place to prevent such a thing from happening."

Were they ready?

"READY?! GO!"

And with one final wave of his wand the pendulum's speed increased. He was going to enjoy watching this...off to the side.

current classroom set up. Not drawn to scale.

OOC Instructions:
  • You will have at least 48 hours to complete this activity
  • You should have at least 4 posts (1 per seasonal change) to receive full credit. And you could be nice to me and label your posts if you waaaaaaaaaant :3
  • In a nut shell: your character is in a 'planet costume' and they are trying to run a full circle around the 'Sun' while avoiding (to the best of their ability) the swinging pendulum and other 'planets' aka their classmates. The inside of the 'planet costume' will reflect the change of the season in some way.
  • How are the seasons reflected in your little planetary orb? That is up to you and your imagination! Maybe it starts to snow in winter? Flower petals shoot into your character's face in spring? Rises and fall in temperature? Entirely up to you!
  • The arena 'acts' like an Foucault pendulum, but the floor beneath your characters is not moving as it is the actual pendulum (the hanging bit with the ball that is going to smack into your character) that has been charmed to move.
  • Any questions you have can be sent to me via PM or VM Professor Flamsteed is still here, just off to the site watching and laughing as chaos unfolds.
  • HAVE FUN!

Activity time? This was the best time. And they were acting out the planets movements and stuff?? Airey always thought of the best activities!

Ana eagerly got into her planetary costume, bouncing slightly with impatience and eagerness as he finished explaining what was happening. It seemed easy enough.

Or not.

Ana eyed the speed of the pendulum dubiously, keeping count in her head as it got faster to attempt to work out when would be safe to start running, and how fast she might have to run. It seemed doable. Although she wasn't confident that she wouldn't fall over, what with all the other students that she'd need to be mindful of along with the pendulum. Still, that's what the bubble planet thingy was for. Protection and all that. Or at least she hoped it provided protection.

Once given permission to run Ana waited a few seconds until the pendulum was in a good position before taking off like a shot. By the time she was near it the pendulum was swinging away from her once more and the scent of dying leaves filled her orby thing along with the drop in temperature that she would always associate with Autumn, no matter how much in other countries it would probably be associated with Winter.

Default A bit of catch up and Pendulum Dodgeball Post #1 (Autumn)
Gaga Mafia Monster : MURPHY : Kelvin's SS!BFAM : Roro's Evil Twin : Ravlyndor : Gopher

Ezra had been looking around the classroom and outside at the night's sky as other students began to answer Professor Flamtsteed's question. He wasn't sure how to prove from earth that the planet was spinning but then he realized, THE STARS!!!

But it was too late the class was moving on. Instead the Gryffindor added it to his notes.

-----------

The activity was next! What could it be. Ezra stood up so that his desk could be moved and then listened to what the Professor had to say. Whatever they could do with a pendulum and a rotating planet couldn't be that fun. Ezra had never heard of any FUN science games. Nope.

skfhdsfdskfdsf! DODGE BALL!

The Gryffindor basically began to hop where he stood. This was SO EXCITING. He tried to be patient and listen as best as he could but there were BIG BALL costumes and a GIANT pendulum that was going to try and knock them out?!

GO! Did he say go? The first year sped off, maybe pushing some other slow kids out of his way, and hopped into a spherical planet suit. As soon as he entered it filled with magically falling leaves.

"What the..?" It didn't bother him too much. So he started to RUN! He headed clockwise at first but then saw the others going the other way. Whoops. Turning back around Ezra went to go the right way when..

BAM!! The ball on the end of the pendulum got him.

"Woooooooaaaaaah!!" The little first year went ROLLING in his costume and once he steadied himself against the magical barrier and got the leaves out of his hair and face, he took off again, heading towards the next season.

This might be fun. Might. It all depended on if his hair got ruined or not from the fake seasons inside his costume thing. Sounded fun in theory though. But what doesn't. Nigel's only concern was avoiding the pendulum. He did not care if other classmates bumped into his bubble thing.

Just go with the flow.

And of course he does not just get leaves falling onto his head. Ruining his hair. But also it was a little colder and dry. This did not sit well for Nigel. He was still in summer mode and did not appreciate the fall temperatures. Maybe in a couple weeks. But not now. Not cool, not cool at all.

Hehe, unintentional pun.

Maybe he should speed up so the swinging pendulum does not hit him........

Maybe

Cool Post 1- Autum.
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ Claimed by Bits ❤️ ~ Queen of Typos ❄ Magical Mosh Pit ❄

Adi watched in amusement as Professor Flamsteed did a bit of a dance. Really, coupled with exciting activities, there was never a dull moment in Astronomy classes. Recovering from his amusement, Adi made some quick notes on this pendulum. This was all so fascinating!

And then it was time for the activity! The part of the lesson that Adi always looked forward to. With much excitement, he dawned that bubble thingy or whatever it was called. The name wasn't important.

The Puffer watched as the speed of the pendulum picked up. Oh this was going to be fuuun! He really didn't care if he smashed into anyone. Hehe. Okay, time to get moving. Adi took off, at all costs trying to avoid the pendulum. Arrrround the sun he went, as he kept and eye on the pendulum and on his classmates. Weeeee! This was fun!

As he came upon completion of his second run around the "sun", the inside of his bubble was suddenly filled with various coloured leaves of different shapes and sizes. The gently fluttered down onto his head, some even sticking in his hair.

oh yeah, this is going to be fun. He loved when they got to do activities in class. Quickly putting on his planet outfit he looked down at himself and laughed, man he looked silly. Giving himself a twirl he couldn't help but giggle like a little school girl. weeeeeeeeeee alright, shifting the outfit better so that he could run he started at a light jog. Hoping that the pace would be enough for him not to get hit.

Looking around he saw some students starting too, as he started to make his way around his judgement on jogging wasn't good. The thing was moving faster than he thought and before he could move out of the way. BAMB he was hit as he thought he was going to get hurt he was bounced off an invisible wall. Bending over he caught his breath as he went to go try again. Well maybe after a minute or two of breathing.

The girl only raised her eyebrows back at Gareth, in a kind of 'there-is-no-way-that-would-work-scientifically-speaking-and-that-doesn't-even-make-sense-but-you-tried' expression, in response to his obvious annoyance. Heh. Good. OH, SEE THAT? PROFESSOR SPACE WAS STARING. HMM NO MORE SUGAR QUILLS FOR YOU. But she said and did nothing. There was still learning to do. And it was all in jest anyways.

Kanna beamed up after a small flinch of surprise as Professor Space jumped onto her desk. This. This was why it was her favorite class. She laughed loudly at first, and then controlled herself. She knew, by the way he was getting excited (moreso) that they were about to do something REALLY COOL, and thus it was hard to pay attention, but she managed.

Ahahaha! Perfect! Kanna eagerly moved her things aside to help clear the center of the room and did not hesitate to climb inside one of those... um... Well, they looked like giant hamster balls. After trying to get her footing inside the thing, it became apparent that, where she started in the circle, it was, evidently, Summer, as the air inside became a little humid. Indeed, she could tell, just barely, that the 'sun' was closer to her than the students on the other side, who would be in Winter, by just a little bit.

Ordinariy, she was confident with her dodge-ball abilities. This was very different, being that now she was a much bigger target of a much bigger ball. but, oh well. It counted as learning. Watching, and trying to track the movement of the Pendulum, she slowed her pace along briefly as it passed in front of her, so that when it swung backwards again, she had time and room to move forwards, in front of it's path. So far, so good.

Whoaaaa! This was going to really COOL!

Sophie had just let that thought pass through her mind, when BAM--the desk were banished to one side of the room and a swinging pendulum appeared out of nowhere. Well, when he said they could go ahead and get started, he really meant that, didn't he?

Sophie stepped into her costume, which was really, really awesome by the way, and immediately began to feel like a little hamster in its cage. She resisted the urge to start somersaulting around the room. Okay, so it was Autumn. She waited for a bit, but not too long, because the pendulum was coming her way. She dodged it just as a waterfall of bright orange leaves fluttered down on her head, coloring her entire costume a pretty Autumn color.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Not necessary? NOT NECESSARY?! the man was a Gryffindor himself! HOW WAS THAT NOT NECESSARY?! Kevin shot one last glare at the older Slytherin before turning his attention to the Professor as he waved his wand.

Oooh practical part? THIS was what he had been waiting for! He stood up from his chair and watched the furniture being pushed aside. Then out of nowhere, a sudden ball was around him and the twelve year old poked the bubble with his finger. He had his own personal bubble! He poked it again , a childish happiness that wasn't seen often on him was shown on his face.

He listened and tried to get the instructions and when the pendulum started to swing , he noticed that it was immediately coming his way. He began to run, but realised that he wasn't moving a single step. Instead, he had taken one step and immediately slipped, lost his balance and felt the pendulum hit him with a force.

Red leaves fell down on him the moment he was hit and as he rolled against the invisible barrier more leaves fell. Autumn, it was obviously autumn in his bubble. Now, how to...move in this thing?

Snowflake Post 2- Winter
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ Claimed by Bits ❤️ ~ Queen of Typos ❄ Magical Mosh Pit ❄

Adi wiped the sweat away from his forehead as he continued dodging his classmates and the mean looking pendulum. He had to slow down a bit though, for the pendulum and him came dangerously close. However, the Pufferfish managed to quickly dodge in the opposite direction. Aha! He was safe!

Brrrr! It was getting cold in here. Adi shivered just as snow began to cascade slowly down in his bubble. Adi's face lit up in a wide grin. Winter! His favourite season! Could he just stay here and not move so it would snow all the time? On second thought, that won't be a good idea. He'd freeze to death. Better get moving then!

It was a zorbing ball! Gwen was thrilled. She had seen a picture somewhere of people in these things and it was sooo exciting! Like a human sized hamster ball! She climbed into it quickly and immediately tripped trying to move.

There had to be a method to this. Standing upright again she took an experimental step on the side, like climbing stairs. Luckily, the ball rolled how she wanted it too, directly into the pendulum arena.

It was hot in her little planet. It must have been summer. And it smelled like beaches and sunscreen. Definitely summertime. The pendulum was coming toward her quickly, and she still hadn't figured out how to move easily. Gwen tried running, only to fall again. Maybe she should somersault? That seemed to work pretty well, getting her out of the way of the pendulum at least.

Yes, an activity! This was always Lux's favourite part of classes. Activities were so much more fun than sitting and answering a million questions. Or taking notes.

After jumping up from her seat, she eagerly got into her planetary costume as she listened to Professor Flamsteed explain the game. Okay, this seemed simple enough, but the pendulum was moving rather fast now.

O_O

A challenge was always welcomed, and eagerly Lux waited for the go ahead before starting at a bit of a run. It was important for her to time everything perfectly. Watching the pendulum swing back and forth, she felt leaves start to fall down on her. Another challenge added, she supposed. Oh well, if this was how her planet costume wanted to behave, so be it at least her vision wasn't totally obstructed.

While being careful to avoid colliding with other student!planets, she waited for the pendulum to swing fully back before running past it.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

As he came upon completion of his second run around the "sun", the inside of his bubble was suddenly filled with various coloured leaves of different shapes and sizes. The gently fluttered down onto his head, some even sticking in his hair.
Running in the bubble was a lot harder than Kevin had imagined. How some of the students were able to even MOVE was a mystery to him. Maybe they all knew some technique that he did not? Brushing some leaves out of his hair, the Gryffindor saw that the Pendulum was away from him so he took a step. And immediately slipped again and fell on his stomach. MWEEEH this was stupid!

But he got up , like a true brave Lion and tried again....and again..and again...until...he was able to walk a few steps. Would you look at that?! He was pretty proud of himself and once he had kind of mastered how to walk in the bubble, he tried running. It...wasn't fast though and as the pendulum came in his direction again he jumped out of the way. His arms pushed against the bubble in front of him and he rolled away from the pendulum.

He had dodged it! But there was a slight problem. Because he had jumped out of the way, he rolled further than he wanted and his personal bubble bumped against another student. And then he rolled back to where he had just started. "Oh come ON!" he groaned.

Hold on. PENDULUM DODGEBALL?

Ok, it was official. Flamsteed had cracked and was now trying to kill them all.

Grudgingly, Caleb pulled on his orb costume and joined the fray, trying to avoid the pendulum at all costs. He imagined that it didn't feel very good at ALL to be hit with that thing and then ricocheting off the wall or something equally painful.

He was starting to make his first orbit, and he noticed that a bunch of leaves were starting to form in the ball with him. He crunched on them as he continued to run, and it was starting to get COLDDD as he approached his first full lap. Clearly he was starting off with autumn on this one. Was that...pumpkin that he smelled? IT WAS! Cool!

THIS was more like it!

Jeez, did Grayson want to be sitting by a desk all day long and listen to people drone on and on about a subject? Not in a million years. And taking notes was long and boring and nearly pointless. The only time he'd look over at them was when his exams were about to come up. Other than that, they were going to sit there and collect dust. He preferred the activities. The activeness. He also very much liked the idea of a dodgeball type game.

A smirk spread across his face as he stood up and watched the desks being swept off to one side. Brilliant. And what was even more brilliant were the costumes. They reminded him a lot of the sumo-wrestling costumes. Or that amazing video he had found where the people were trying to play a Muggle sport while being dressed up in a big bubble but, instead of getting very far in the game, they kept on being knocked over instead.

Now. How easy would it be to knock someone over with this and make it look like an accident? It was all in the name of the game. Every person for themselves. Grayson bounced on the spot to try and warm up a bit while looking around the classroom. Were people getting themselves knocked over by the pendulum already? LOOOOOOL. Merlin, that was funny! This was going to be a fun activity.

Once he was ready, the fourth year set off. The pendulum had long since passed him which might have meant that he needed to hurry up otherwise he'd face the humiliation of being knocked over himself. And someone was going to laugh at him. Someone who possibly didn't like him and didn't appreciate how great of a company he made.

......................... Had something DIED in here?

That's what he could smell. As if something had died. And not just any odd thing; Grayson had ran a couple more steps before he realised that what he could smell were dead leaves. Ones that seemed to come out of nowhere and land in his hair and at the bottom of his ball. And to make it worse, he could almost smell a hint of pumpkin in the air. Oh jeez. Trying to ignore this wasn't going to work when a slight wind picked up and got chillier and chillier the more and more he ran. MERLIN. He was done for.

Just run, Grayson.

Bay getting up dusted himself off and tried to run again but he got distracted, was that pumpkin pie he smelt. "ughhh why!!!!" he yelled why his stomach started to growl. It smelt so good and he was very happy that he wore a sweater to class today, Autumn was a bit chilly.

OH RIGHT… SWINGING THINGY!!!

Bay had to make sure he didn't get hit with it again, it wasn't fun and he didn't want it to happen twice. Picking up his speed he looked back to see where that thing was… "okay I have some distance between it and myself" he thought as he finally made it out of Autumn, now it was time to run through the winter stage. Time to brace himself for some cold weather.

Kace was excited to do this activity. He zoned out on the last question but he honestly didn't know the answer. But now onto the physical stuff! He couldn't wait. He saw the professor move the desks to the side. He was getting more excited. He saw they had to go into the hamster ball things. He climbed into it and waited for the pendulum to stop swinging towards his way. Once it was clear...

He bolted to make his orbit before he could get knocked over. He finally made it! He liked this idea of like physical stuff. He was a fast runner so it helped. As he made it through, he noticed his ball started to get colder. He shivered but it helped cool him down after running so fast. He felt the air get colder. He even smelt the smell of crisp apples. He even got the leaves smack into his face. He spit out the dirt and coughed.

After he got through the leaves, he was getting prepared to make his next move around the sun while avoiding the pendulum.

Adi was enjoying the leaves that were ever so gently cascading down on him. Was that even a gentle breeze he was feeling? It would seem so. All he knew was that he was no longer sweating. Yay!

Okay, it was time for round three! Adi eyed the pendulum. It was a safe distance away from him. It was a good time to take off running again. But the boy was only paying attention to he pendulum and not his peers. The result? One of them came crashing into him!

Adi was bowled completely over and he was sent rolling in the same direction of whoever bumped into him. Rolling in that bubble was no fun. It made him dizzy. He lay completely still for a few seconds, trying to get his head back on straight and the room to stop spinning. when it finally did, the Puffer (with some degree of difficulty) hauled himself up and eyed the student next to him. Ugh! Who had been so careless as to knock him down?

Oh. It was only the Lion, Kevin. "Yo, Kevin! This is no time to be taking a nap.'' Grinning, Adi edged closer to the boy. "Need a hand?"
