Yes, it was a challenge to concise one's answers down to such few words, but it was also a stellar mental exercise to get students really looking at the facts, the big picture, and pushing their understanding. He liked seeing the little wheels in their heads spinning.
Heh. Quote:

Sophie knew the answer, but trying to condense it into five words or less was the hard part. She sat there saying the answer over and over in head trying to figure out a different way of saying it.
She cautiously raised her hand. Why does the Earth have seasons? Because... "Axis...points...sun...or...away," she said. There. Five words. Did he get that? Was the answer in there somewhere? She eyed him but otherwise said nothing else. Word limit and all.
Sophie took these things literally. Although it looked as though the challenge may have short circuited Miss Newell's brain. Oops.
Offering her an encouraging smile, because he was preeeeeeeetty sure he understood what she was trying to say, he tapped her desk twice with his knuckles. "I believe you are on the right track, Miss Newell."
Hopefully the coming explanation would confirm this. Quote:

"Of course," he chuckled. "The Sun and Earth converse with one another on a daily basis to ensure that you get the most use out of what surely must be an extensive wardrobe. Congratulations, Miss Robertser, you have discovered the answer to the universe."

It was TRUE. Get it? Geeeeeeeeet it? Inclination? The Earth's tilt? Cool, like how the Earth was all sorts of rad, but also like how parts of the Earth were cooler dependent upon the Earth's tilt and the amount of sunlight the different hemispheres received?
...No? Probably just her? Okay. This response, well, he knew how to field this one. Or he hoped he did because Miss Brown's witty humor had him in a fit of manly giggles. "That was a stellar one, Miss Brown," he salutes. "You may be giving Mr. Barrington a run for his galleon with your wit." Quote:

The professor looked VERY excited for some reason. Why does the earth have seasons? Why was everybody talking about the earth tilting and stuff? "Because all four seasons are beautiful." Obviously, duh. "And let us hope they stay that way," he nodded. That was an entirely different field of study, humanity's impact on the environment, and one that was a rather unpleasant one. Quote:

Long sigh.
Ana brightened however when she took in what he'd actually said. He said no hugs in his classroom. He said nothing about hugs in other places around the school. Clearly he didn't mind it as much as he was making out. Although there really was no need to step away from her. Ana wasn't going to try to hug him again right now. Bright smile for you professor.
And OH, she and Terry had the same favourite season. They were so compatible and she got a nod from Flamsteed for her answer. See, she'd totally remake those points.
New question. Which lots of people were already answering. Seeing no reason to just copy what others were saying; that the reason for the seasons was because Earth was tilted on it's axis meaning the sun hit different spots at different times Ana simply took notes while waiting for the next question. One which she'd likely attempt to answer because this was her favourite subject. Quote:

Maddie's brothers DID say they went out and macked in the Summer, specifically, so she couldn't be at fault for being truthful about her reasons for liking that season so much. Not sorry. Just like she wasn't sorry the Gryffindor boy was being a Pouty McPouterson about the whole thing. Big whoop, the Professor told you to make Mac and Cheese instead. An invitation to make delicious food, that was. The boy got a look that hopefully read 'Suck it up, kid.' It wasn't her fault he decided to jump in and repeat something she'd said without knowing what it meant. Dima got a look and a shrug too. Maybe they could look up what it meant later or something. YEAH! Or they could asked the badged boy from Ravenclaw. He seemed nice enough.
P.S. Maddie had no idea why the earth had seasons. Probably cause she didn't really care enough to go research it on her own. She was inclined to believe it had to do with tilting and the axis based on how many people had said that, though. Good to know. She sat up straighter and tried to get comfortable at her desk which was IMPOSSIBLE, waiting for them to move on.
Was that Gryffindor kid still pouty?
Giving small nods to those choosing to remain silent, he couldn't help but wonder just what Mr. Barrington was writing down on his parchment and took a small peek. "Planet," he snort!chuckled before giving the prefect two firm pats on the shoulder. That WAS a good one. The fact that Miss Konstantinova remained quiet was a little unsettling. Hopefully she wasn't too upset about the small point loss. The astronomer just really valued his personal space...
An eyebrow raise toward Mr. Mordaunt happened. Keeping TWO eyes on you, good sir. And thankfully Miss Cooper had dropped the macking subject. Yes. Thank you.

That was five which was an option and the only way Ben could think of wording it. During the course of the year and the path of its orbit around the sun, the earth was closer or further away from the star and thus warmer or cooler which helped create the seasons. Quote:

This would take a lot of omission. Which would mean taking out all of the and's, if's, the's and but's. Haha, taking out the butt. Okay, she needed to focus on this. Coming up with the answer made her feel like a cave woman back in the old days before all of this happened. Or at leas the television version of cave people. No one actually heard a caveman talk before, so they might have spoken Italian for all anybody knew. That would have been interesting. Italian speaking cave people. Anyway, focus.
"Earth rotate around sun." And to pull her point in, the girl made a turning motion with her finger. The blue eyed girl had pretty much said the same thing as everyone else. So, this creative exercise was a fail for her. Or more to say that she had failed the creative exercise. Well, it was fact. And how do you make fact creative, besides word games? That was a good question, was it not? How could reciting fact be creative if it was the same tidbit of fact that they had learned all of their lives? She would have to ask someone that later. Because it was stumping her.
Also, that quaffle on the desk that she had just noticed was hurtful. Reminding her that all of the work she had put in was for nothing. It had to be harder for people who actually PLAYED organized quidditch before, but it still really stunk to try for something all year and then have it not happen. Yeah, the second year was a little bitter. You could say that. The Ravenclaw didn't want to know what would happen next. Especially since last years issue started out small. Was EVERY year at Hogwarts like this? Because that would be messed up and kind of awesome. Quote:

Why did the earth have seasons? The answer seemed to simple to Vinnie that hshe couldnt properly form it. " The world spins around the sun, sometimes its closer sometimes its farther away.", she raised her hand and nodded while explaining her theory. That was more than five words...but oh well.
Ah yes, he had been expecting this answer to come up and while not entirely incorrect, because it obviously was a piece of the puzzle, it just wasn't THE piece. "You are not wrong in saying that the Earth's orbit around the Sun plays a role in the creation of the seasons, for without its slightly elliptical orbit it would always be the same season on either hemisphere, there is something else that plays a bigger role," he began, making sure to make eye contact with each student who had offered up an answer. "Likewise, it is a common misconception that the Earth is closer to the Sun in the summer and that is why it is hotter and the opposite is true for winter. This, however, is a very incorrect assumption. Ironically enough, in the Northern Hemisphere we experience winter when Earth is closest to the Sun and summer when it is farthest away."
How was THAT for some interesting Astronomy factoids to owl home about?!
"The Earth's orbit plays a greater role in the length of each season," he continued as he gave his wand a flick towards the board to make a diagram appear.
Even MORE interesting factoids to owl home about, yeah? YEAH! SPOILER!!: Earth is spinning answers Quote:

"The spin of Earth on it's axis is also important, but for a very different reason," he nodded. Okay, next question. Hadn't he heard this question before? Maybe it was on one of those many space shows he watched with his dad. The Puffer boy thought of his answer carefully before raising his hand. "Earth's axis is tilted, Professor.'' Four words. Okay five if you counted "Professor". Quote:

As for the next question, Zander wasn't completely sure, but being adventurous he might as well give it a go. "Because the Earth is tilted! That was five? Oooh, four words or less, that was tricky. "It has a... tilty axis," she said, counting out each word on her fingers as she said them. Well, that was five, but it was close enough. Adrienne was within the acceptable one-word margin of error, so she was okay. Quote:

Which didn't really make sense, now that she thought about it. Christmas was hardly ever called 'The Twenty Fifth of December.' Still, it was the way it was often referred to.
Why the earth had seasons? That was science. Gwen knew that stuff. She counted on her fingers, trying to choose the perfect five words to describe it. It was pretty hard. It was a ten-word explanation at least.
Finally she raised her hand, a little more tentative with this answer than she had been for the last. Now that her first answer had been sort of mocked, she wasn't sure if she wanted to answer a second, but the thing was, not all of these kids had gone to muggle school. They might not even know all of that stupid science stuff Gwen had learned there. "The Earth's axis tilts."
That was why they had seasons. While the earth rotated around the sun on a tilted axis, they would always have seasons. Depending on which part of the Earth a person was on. That was also the reason the poles were always cold. They didn't get as much sunlight as other parts of the planet. Quote:

"VERY interesting that you bring that story up," he applauded. Three claps, by the way. "Before the ancients were able to rely on more scientific methods to explain the natural world, they created myths to explain how world and humankind assumed their present form. It wasn't until around 480 BCE that a Greek philosopher by the name of Oenopides became the first to calculate the degree of the Earth's tilt." Quote:

The desks were tilted. Like the planet.
"How do other planets have seasons if they aren't on a tilted axis, though?" Oh, oops... this wasn't Q&A time. Mo clapped a hand comically over his mouth and made apologetic eyes at the professor. Airey grinned at Mr. Branxton. "That is an excellent question, Mr. Branxton, but you may be surprised to hear that other planets DO in fact possess a tilt. In fact, Mars, Saturn and Neptune all have a tilt roughly the same angle as Earth’s, so they experience a similar cycle of spring, summer, autumn and winter. The difference is that these seasons last a much longer time." As he had mentioned earlier with a season on Neptune lasting 40 some years! "Uranus is also on a tilt, but its angle is much more severe than other planets, so the planet experiences much more extreme seasons. Jupiter, Venus and Mercury, on the other hand, have nearly no tilt at all and therefore do not experience noticeable changes from season to season."
A demonstration here in just another minute or two should help demonstrate this a little better. Quote:

He raised his hand anyway. "What. They. All. Said."
It was four words. CHUCKLE!SNORT!
"You never cease to amuse me, Mr. Toussaint," he laughed.
Seeing that there were no other hands raised, Airey adjusted his tie that had gone a bit collywobbles during his leaping - which had taken great skill, by the way, considering how wobbly they were. He had practiced. Seriously. He had.
Heading back to his desk, Airey tapped the lamp with his wand to turn it on and flooded the room with a bright but welcoming light. He then picked up the quaffle and held it out...and then got awkward. "I must appologize for use of this. I had not predicted that its presence would make so many of you uncomfortable." Disclaimer. Sorry. He thought that something familiar and something students were passionate about would be welcoming. "Image that this quaffle here is the Earth and that this black line here is the equator. Our lamp over here shall represent the Sun." He then enchanted the quaffle to float in the air and guided it with a few fluid wand movements. "Now, imagine an line going right through the quaffle, from top to bottom. This imaginary line is called the axis and this is what the Earth spins on," he continued as he charmed the quaffle to spin slowly around in place.
"Now, the Earth's axis does not stand up perfectly straight like it is now, but rather at a 23 and a half degree tilt and the Earth remains at this tile for the entire year in space. That's all 365 and ¼ days," he explained as he charmed the quaffle's position to reflect this. "Now, the amount of light hitting the quaffle has not lessened any, but rather the dispensation of it has. The bit that is tilted towards the Sun is receiving more of the light, so this tilt towards the Sun is what causes summer. The lower part of the quaffle, as you can see, is not receiving the light directly, but at an angle, so this tilt away from the Sun is what causes winter."
With another wave of his wand, he sent the Earth!quaffle on its way to orbit the lamp. "SUNRIIIIIIISE SUNSET SUNRIIIIIISE SUNSET...THIS IS KIND OF WEEEEEEEEEIRD ... IT IS A DIFFERENT SEEEEEEEEEASOOOOOOON ... IN THE EARTH’S OTHER HEMISPHERE."
Alright, that didn't flow as smoothly off the tongue. NO MATTER!
Flicking his wand towards the board to show another diagram for reference while the quaffle continues to act all Earth-like.
"Now, the answer to this question has already been alluded to, but just humor me for a moment. We associate the summer with being hot and winter with being cold. Looking again at our crude example of the Earth orbiting the Sun, can anyone tell me why this happens? Why does the fact that the Earth is tilted on its axis matter to our weather? Please try to keep your answers as concise as possible, but you are certainly allowed more than 5 words this time around." OOC: class will resume sometime tomorrow GMT somewhere between 12 to 16 hours from the time of this post hopefully <3
