| | | HoM: Lesson One Smack dab in the middle of the day, History of Magic may not be the class you want after enjoying a relaxing lunch break but want it or not, it’s what you have. Making your way into the classroom the first thing that hits you is the nice cool breeze coming from the open windows.
At the back of the classroom, away from the last row of desks, happen to be two extremely old chairs. They appear as though they may be on the verge of breaking, but they must be there for a reason.
The desks have been arranged in their normal positions, two side by side. The only real difference happens to be small stack of papers on each desk along with an individual pack of coloured pencils.
As your eyes quickly dart to the front of the classroom you’ll notice that Scabior isn’t in his normal spot leaning against his desk, that would be quite a hard task considering the number of thin books stacked on his desk. Instead he sits behind it, like an actual respectable professor. He however, is not the only one at the front.
Sitting cross legged on a desk chair with wheels is a boy who looks slightly too young to even go to the school. He is continuously spinning around in circles until he catches sight of you, stops, and grins. “HELLLOO! Sit down, sit sit!” Class Progression: Post One Post Two Post Three Post Four Post Five Post Six Post Seven Post Eight Post Nine Post Ten Post Eleven OOC: Class has started! You are welcome to jump in just pretend like your charrie has been there all along! Class will begin in like...20 hours . Please familiarize yourself with the updated classroom rules. Your characters can chat, eat cookies, do a rain dance. Just remember Scabior is there, and SS and RPG rules apply. |

Something she could actually answer and not sound silly answering. "I think a lot of it has to do with fantasy. Muggles can't fly, or have supper strength or whatever it is. So they like to write stories that attract them to give them something to fantasize about. An I think all muggles dream of flying that's why they have things like airplanes and gliders... "Both are able to sell because people, whether kids or adults, liked to be entertained and are always on the look out for new additions to the series they love.''
Now for the second and third questions. "People in general know everything about normal stuff,'' the Puff continued. "So, they will want to read something different. Some can find it boring to read about everyday stuff in a comic. For example, with Muggles, they do not live in a world where there are super powers but with comics they are able to live that world. That was an interesting question, and it dragged Mo's attention away from Kyroh and his spinning chair. It was a really good spinner, and Mo had all sorts of theories and questions about the chair.
But this question captured him for now. "I think Muggles like superheroes because there's an element of escapism. The world isn't perfect, right? But a hero can right some of those wrongs that the rest of the Muggles see in the world. It's not real, but it's an idealized version of the world... one that's totally fixable with the right superpowers added to the mix. But that wouldn't make sense to wizardingkind, 'cause we can do those things they attribute as super, and the world still isn't perfect. So superheroes are less appealing to us." Although he still liked them. Maybe that made him as fond of Muggles as West was.
"But I like Martin Miggs and Looney Nonby because they're funny. Hapless, even. They get into scrapes that I don't know that I can relate to because they're so fantastic, and then they get out of them again. So maybe there's that element of fantasy and escapism for us in those stories."

Nerida looked over at the Professor that was an interesting question. "I think superheros are less appealing to us magical folk because we can do all of that stuff basically, we can fly and make cool things happen. But we can't be muggles we could try but we could never truly be one of them. I think thats why we like 'normal' comics and muggles don't want to read comics about normal people where is the escape from reality in those?

Kyroh had been cute...but his father was making more sense...and getting to the point faster.
...And then he was talking in way of contrast...
Raising his hand, Dylan shrugged. "I think it's more based on the fantasy of it. Muggles wished they could perform magic because it'd make their day to day lives easier...but wizarding people, like us, are curious about what it'd be like to just be normal. So, what I'm saying is...We're curious...and muggles just want to be able to use shortcuts."...because his father had expressed how he wished he could perform magic.
Also.... "...Kinda like the grass is always greener on the other side, type thing."

Ok... All these informations might be a little too much for him to absorb instantly. At least it isn't boring. To answer the scary-looking professor's question, he half-raises his shivering hand. "Because that there are already a lot of crazy muggles. Like- Like the ongoing ones, s- somewhere far from here... They use big explosions to kill people. Like they showed on TV and... Maybe they don't want to scare little kids," because he is scared with all those loud explosions and people screaming and crying. He saw dead children as well and the last time he remembered watching such thing, he cried the whole night.
Was that it? Oh! In the wizarding world... Well, they are magical human beings. "I don't think comics about flying men will be exciting," It's his personal opinion, but it should make sense to at least a few of them.

| HOLISTIC ACTRESS {X O} EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED Um why didn't they have crazy muggles? Obviously because Muggles were muggles and they didn't need to warn themselves to stay away from the crazies because crazies were crazy. They just knew crazy wasn't safe.
Hey? Wait, hadn't people called her crazy before.
Yep. They had last year in-fact. "I think muggles don't have comicbooks about muggles who is crazy because they are muggles...we are magical and awesome so we don't know how it is to not use magic...unless your a squib and if you are going to school here chances are you aren't a squib." Yeah she as making total sense. "I think we don't have comicbooks about flying people because we can fly." She admitted. "See we know about how to make magic flying brooks fly....and muggles don't know how to do that."
See more reasons that muggles weren't as awesome as wizards and witches...even if they were cool. They just couldn't fly without a plane or space-rocks from the planet Krypton.

The comics themselves are titled The Adventures of Martin Miggs, the Mad Muggle, and Loony Nonby vs. Cornish Pixie. The most popular ones in the Wizarding World. "One is about a crazy Muggle an the other a guy facing off against a pixie, and losing the majority of the time." Scabior paused for a few seconds to throw one of the books back on his desk. "And just like Mr. Odessa said, they are not superheroes." So WHY were they talking about them? "Despite that fact. The number of people who actually read these comics in the Wizarding world are almost identical to the number of Muggles who read those-" He motioned to the board. "-comics. Not sarcastic at all. Except in that slightly Slytherin way where you could never quite TELL if it was legit or not.
But it was. Beaaaams.
West thought about that question and threw his hand up. "Maybe because the point of fantasy is to imagine things that you know can't happen, or things that are different from your own experience and stuff? And.... sometimes stories like what are in comics are.... are..." What was the word, "Allegories for things. Like the unlikely or the impossible is used to represent a symbol or concept what might be harder to understand without making it fun and simple. Sometimes its like we get tricked into learning stuff and we don't even know it because we think we are reading for fun but really we're reading something that has a point and a lesson." Lessons like don't mess with cornish pixies for instance, and when muggles are nutso you should stay out of their way.
So to relate that back to the question and what he meant, "So like, when its a story what seems like its just for fun and fantasy and imaginings, really it might have a hidden meaning or lesson in it, and its better to hide those lessons in something that doesn't sound like you're learning junk, and something new and different that makes you interested to read it to begin with."

Oh, just look at that. Kyroh even still looked adorable sneaking one of the comics and reading there on his spot. He should be given some sort of "Best Admirable-looking Kid While Reading" award or something. Heh.
But Professor Scabior was reading and Beezus had to take her eyes off the prince charming for a bit. JUST FOR AN ITTY BITTY BIT.
Listening, she contemplated on the question before raising her hand up in the air. "Professor, I think it's because people tend to give more interest on new things." Emphasis on the word 'new'. "We have this innate, seemingly fixed behavior of turning our heads more to things that we aren't used to having around us. What's new always attracts attention and I guess muggles writing about superheroes and wizards adapting stories of non-magical folk is a response to this." Shrug. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand.....back to Kyroh-watching.

That was a really good question.
Hmm.. Nigel had to think about this one. Nigel raised his hand. "Well, When you don't have magic. You imagine and fantasize that you do, same thing with superpowers. But when you have magic. You look to things that are different than you and make comic characters like Martin Miggs."
Nigel still wish he had superpowers or a genius intellect like Batman. That would be so awesome.

Somehow, it was starting to be clear as to why Kyroh had introduced the class about superheroes. Mainly, it was just because of the comic books. That was pretty much the only smilarity between them. Matrin Miggs wasn't a superhero, as West had shared. Cough.
Now, for more thinking. Hmm. The question Scabior had asked was definitely testing them if they had brains. Course, everyone did. Kat raised her hand. Uhm. "I think it's because Muggles don't have these powers and magic that we, witches and wizards, have," Kat said. "The way they wrote about the superheroes is only what they think people with powers do. It's based on their imaginations and beliefs." For example, not all Muggles are mad like Martin Miggs but that's what most of the wizards think Muggles are: crazy and unaware of the presence of magic. Geddit?

The answer for this one was pretty obvious, and Elise thought that Beezus had worded it really beautifully. Elise was never really one for fancy sentences. She would far rather get to the point and have someone get it rather than say it all confusingly and have people stare at you, trying to get your point.
Hand in the air, Elise simply said what she thought. "Muggles want magic, that's why they want all their superheroes be special. Something they can't be." Pausing a moment to think, Elise continued. "Wizarding folk like to imagine Muggle life, so they make a comic full of such things."
"They're never happy with what they have." Elise never knew why. People were such strange, strange creatures. Always so complicated.

This question was sort of an interesting one. Selina supposed that the reason why Muggle comic books emulated magic and Magical comic books emulated mundane, Muggle life was because people always want what they don't have. The seventh year knew TONS of people like that. It was partially human nature; of course, not everyone did it with as much fervor as others did. Some people literally ONLY wanted things that weren't theirs just for the sport of it. There was a name for people like that...
ANYWAY, she rose her hand and said thoughtfully, "I think, Professor, that Muggles don't want to read about things that aren't fantastical. Fiction is an escape. Why emulate their normal lives when they can escape to something so much cooler and interesting for them. And for magic folk, I think we're all kind of intrigued by how Muggles live and get by without magic. It's like our own little escape into their world... like getting to try on their shoes." Yeah.

| Stephanoodle || Adorable Nerd Belle heard the professor ask a question that now made more sense. He was trying to go into depth about the idea of comics and people. Belle did have a theory. "Professor i have an idea that people like to see another world. They like to escape the pressures of their own world and go into another world and become someone else or imagine themselves as someone else. A person's imagination can only take a person so far, it may even cause an obsession too."
Belle had experience this. I think everyone has wanted to go into another world. Belle has.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Susan Angelica Bones Second Year | Susan was thinking about why those comics did do so well in the wizarding world. They were just about a silly Muggle...but then again there weren't any Muggles that acted like that.
Then Susan realized she just answered the question, so she raised her hand to announce what she thought was right to the professor. "It is something that doesn't happen in the wizarding world. We don't see that stuff, so it is different and entertaining." Of course these were just Sue thoughts, but she thought they sounded pretty good. |

Really good question, but the information before was a bit to take in.
Making a few more notes, the red head looked up as she attempted to come up with an answer of her own. She had to have known something about this, after all she had been working at the Daily Prophet all summer. Surely she should have known what wizards were interested in reading or talking about.
Her lips pursed into their usual pout before she raised her hand, ready to say something. "Professor when people read they want to read about something that isn't usual, they want to read about something different, something they've never seen or heard of before, something that doesn't exist in their 'world'. Which is what I think is the case here." Wow. She was talking a lot, not something she usually did. "Superheroes is something they'd never see on a daily basis and Muggles, well for most Wizards and Witches it is also something we don't see often and for that reason it excites us and makes us curious." Enough said then? Heck yes.

"Muggles want to read about things that won't possibly happen to them. Like really, the possibility of a muggle acquiring any super powers is totally nil."
"Likewise for us wizarding folk. We don't want to read about the things that we can do in comics. We can read about it in the newspapers. We want to read about the funny things that Muggles would do, that we wouldn't do."
Did she make sense? Alyssa hoped she did. Scabior nodded, more because he was listening than agreeing. "For the most part there you are right. However, they are not funny things that Muggles would do but rather funny things that some people believe Muggles do." Big difference there. Quote:

They can't do magic and nothing epic ever really happens to them!
So maybe there's that element of fantasy and escapism for us in those stories." Scabior nodded. This one was already starting off better than his sister. "Or perhaps its like that for the Muggles as well, having heroes with powers may just be an element of fantasy to them as well." Quote:

Raising his hand, Dylan shrugged. "I think it's more based on the fantasy of it. Muggles wished they could perform magic because it'd make their day to day lives easier...but wizarding people, like us, are curious about what it'd be like to just be normal. So, what I'm saying is...We're curious...and muggles just want to be able to use shortcuts."...because his father had expressed how he wished he could perform magic.
Also...."...Kinda like the grass is always greener on the other side, type thing." "Normal in the sense that we wouldn't have magic?" He was amusing that's what the boy meant. After all technically being a wizard or a witch was a normal thing to all of them. "Good way to put it." The grass is always greener type thing. "Though I could argue that both sides could just be curious?" Quote:

They use big explosions to kill people. Like they showed on TV and... Maybe they don't want to scare little kids," because he is scared with all those loud explosions and people screaming and crying. He saw dead children as well and the last time he remembered watching such thing, he cried the whole night.
Was that it? Oh! In the wizarding world... Well, they are magical human beings. "I don't think comics about flying men will be exciting," It's his personal opinion, but it should make sense to at least a few of them. Scabior was silent for a few seconds and stared at the boy. He appeared to be a first year. Lesson one at Hogwarts: "Be careful with what you say. Or Muggleborns might not like you too much." Really, he had to think. And why was he stuttering? "There are bad Wizards and Witches out there, just as there are bad Muggles, and they've killed hundreds. I can name many of them. So don't make that assumption." Quote:

The explanation was a bit..jumbled, but Scabior nodded all the same. Quote:

But it was.
So to relate that back to the question and what he meant, "So like, when its a story what seems like its just for fun and fantasy and imaginings, really it might have a hidden meaning or lesson in it, and its better to hide those lessons in something that doesn't sound like you're learning junk, and something new and different that makes you interested to read it to begin with." West was up to something. Or thinking about it, by that look. He would have to give Hecate a heads up to keep an eye on the boy.
His reason though...it was different from the others but that didn't make it less correct. "That is the exact point of Fantasy." Scabior said with a small nod. Good job there Odessa. As for teh rest of what he said, he was right too.
In a way it was almost like this class. Thought to be about Muggle superheroes but that wasn't the real lesson behind it. Quote:

"Well I wouldn't exactly call them new. Wizards and Muggles used to co-exist together." Which was something she SHOULD know by now as he had taught her it! Quote:

Nigel still wish he had superpowers or a genius intellect like Batman. That would be so awesome. "In the simplest terms, yes." Quote:

Now, for more thinking. Hmm. The question Scabior had asked was definitely testing them if they had brains. Course, everyone did. Kat raised her hand. Uhm. "I think it's because Muggles don't have these powers and magic that we, witches and wizards, have," Kat said. "The way they wrote about the superheroes is only what they think people with powers do. It's based on their imaginations and beliefs." For example, not all Muggles are mad like Martin Miggs but that's what most of the wizards think Muggles are: crazy and unaware of the presence of magic. Geddit? A small Scabior nod. She was right however. It was just Scabior. Quote:

Hand in the air, Elise simply said what she thought. "Muggles want magic, that's why they want all their superheroes be special. Something they can't be." Pausing a moment to think, Elise continued. "Wizarding folk like to imagine Muggle life, so they make a comic full of such things."
"They're never happy with what they have." Elise never knew why. People were such strange, strange creatures. Always so complicated. "Oh I think they are happy." Scabior started slowly. "It's just fun to imagine." Was it not? Did she want to live in a world with no imagination? As a author, Scabior didn't. Quote:

Some people literally ONLY wanted things that weren't theirs just for the sport of it. There was a name for people like that...
ANYWAY, she rose her hand and said thoughtfully, "I think, Professor, that Muggles don't want to read about things that aren't fantastical. Fiction is an escape. Why emulate their normal lives when they can escape to something so much cooler and interesting for them. And for magic folk, I think we're all kind of intrigued by how Muggles live and get by without magic. It's like our own little escape into their world... like getting to try on their shoes." Yeah. Fantastical......Right. He raised a brow but then just nodded. She was correct after all. Quote:

We don't see that stuff, so it is different and entertaining." Of course these were just Sue thoughts, but she thought they sounded pretty good. "Exactly.
Heck yes. Completely right! And on that note- - "So, I know that many of you were thinking, and even asking what Muggle Superheros had to do with History of Magic." He looked over at the two who had so rudely asked, as if he had no reason for having this class. "And to be honest with you, usually it would have very little. However like I said earlier, sometimes textbooks don't always tell you what you need to know. Sometimes it's just psychological. What many of you said, just now is a realization that can not be made by reading anything from textbooks." "In the essence of fantasy, Wizards, Witches and Muggles alike tend not to write about what is normal for them. Because of this we end up actually writing or creating characters like the opposite group. We have muggles in our stories. We have a man who fights with a pixie. Generally we take things and people we don’t understand. Muggles are the opposite. They take people who they have no ability to be. Need a guy to save the world? Why not make him fly?"
He let it sink in for a bit before moving on. "As Wizards- and witches- we have the ability to do basically much of what Superman can do. We can fly, on brooms. We can produce fire with our wands, we can find a way to climb walls. Why do we need a Batman when we had Harry Potter? Batman could never live up." It made no sense. The guy was just rich and wore a bat suit. Nope. "And this whole idea is essentially one of the first things that you are taught maybe when you are a Muggle but especially when you are a Witch or a Wizard. The idea that your way of living is normal. So let's try and imagine something else. Something more fun." It was why when they were younger any of the ones who had grown up in a magical home probably wanted to get their hands on a wand. It is also probably why Muggleborns have the best understanding since their exposure. It was why he had chosen to make this topic a lesson. Because dates and names were great but the way wizards thought? That was just as important in history.
Checking his watch Scabior nodded. Alright. There was still some time. He flicked his wand causing the comic books on his desk to rise and another flick sent them drifting over, one muggle and one wizarding one on each desk. "For the rest of the time we have here, I want you to use the tools on your desk to create and draw an original fantasy character who would thrive in the wizarding or muggle community. If you are Muggleborn or grew up with Muggles I want you to do one on the Wizarding community, and the reverse if you grew up in a magical home. It doesn’t have to be perfect, the best writters in the world have yet to perfect them, just someone that would interest wizards and not so much muggles or vice versa." Well....get to it.
Huh? Done already? Kyroh raised his hand up high as he looked away from his comic. "I can help people! If you want help!" He grinned. He could! He knew what he would like to read about. OOC: Oh....this is long. I apologize. I will give you a free eye massages once you have read this post.Edit/Note: If you can't think of a character right now that's totally fine, just RP your character thinking or trying stuff out, whatever you want. Class will end really soon so that's just a heads up.

Erik still wasn't sure he saw the academic goal in teaching this class on how wizards think. Or whatever the point was. This was History of Magic, was it not, not Psychology of Magic? These British schoolchildren were not intelligent enough to handle a psychology class in their mere secondary days. The Norse, like him, were just much more superior, as they did offer such a glass. And their history classes were much better to boot.
The blonde man took one of the blank 'comic books' anyway and flipped through it idly, as though he could glean something from its empty pages.

Oichi was sure she knew the answer to the professors current question. It was obvious, she chuckled slightly as he said it. She calmed down and raised her hand and responded, "Well, muggles are not used to to magic of any kind besides some slight of hand. Magic to them is fantasy. However to us it is normal. But to wizards muggles are out of the ordinary. Most wizards don't know much about muggle anything. I do and was personally a little offended when I first read wizards comics. I personally still prefer the muggle ones.".

She was a pureblood...So she had to do one on a character thriving in a muggle community?? Eepp.. No ideas were coming to her. She was dooomed!!! Hearing an excited voice saying he could help. So the Professor wanted them to draw an original fantasy character. She wanted to ask the Professor what if she was wizard born but had lived in a muggle community, had grown up with muggle friends all her life, except for the last 6 years of her life when she was attending a wizarding school. Even then, the time she spent with wizarding people was still shorter than the time that she spent with muggles. What then?
After much thinking Alyssa decided that she would draw a fantasy character based on someone who would be living in a muggle community i.e. her. She thought long and hard before she opened up her box of coloring pencils and started drawing.
After taking the time to draw her fantasy character which was the worst drawing she had ever done, Alyssa sat back and put down her coloring pencils. She looked at her drawing. This was her fantasy character. The DragonLord. Dr. Merlin Emrys, a human who had been experimenting with Dragon DNA and ended up accidentally injecting himself with it.
He had the powers of a dragon. He had the ability to breath out fire. His body/skin was so strong and tough that nothing could penetrate it. He had the ability to fly and his eyesight and hearing were excellent. He used his powers to help those who were powerless to help themselves. Those who needed his help against villains of the muggle community.

Jory loved creating new stuff so this activity was going to be fun for him. He thought for a while, then got to work. He drew the outline of a young man then added in the features. Next, he added colours. Sure, it wasn't the best of drawings because he wasn't good as an artist.
"He's going to be called Captain Cool,'' the badger thought as he looked at his poor masterpiece.
Captain Cool is just as his name sounds. He's always in charge and cool headed in a bad situation and is always ready to fight for others making him one of the most admired superheroes especially by the children. His super powers included flying, being able to stretch his hand at any distance he wants to and laser beam vision.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Melody Sparks First Year |
Melody got out her drawing supplies from her purse. A nice fancy big one that had an enchanted pocket that her mother did for her so she could carry the books she needed for the day. She got busy right away. Even though she still didn't get the point of this lesson. Maybe it was because she was pure blood and didn't care for most muggle like stuff no, she was raised that way. She also wasn't allowed to read magic comic books either while growing up. That didn't matter though. Melody knew one thing. She LOVED to draw, she could do this. She already knew what she was going to do.
When she was done Melody had the first drawing of a girl named Amelia Clearwater Amelia Clearwater, in a normal outfitHer second drawing of Magic GirlMagic Girl, A.K.A, Amelia Clearwater, in her hero''s costume She then wrote on a piece of parchment. Explaining her character. The is Amelia Clearwater is a witch that lives in the *muggle world. She wears a ruby necklace that she presses, in the center, that will change her outfit to her fighting crime outfit. She attends high school as a transfer student after graduating Hogwarts. This allows her one year before she graduates in the muggle world to study more in depth about teen muggles and even dating a boy in her school. One day she accidentally reveled herself as a witch in front of a muggle while protecting them. Instead of being punished the Ministry of Magic decided to give her a code name Magic Girl, and how observe how the muggles react to a real 'superhero' just like the comics they read about.
*This is a comic for both magic and non magic folk. The comic book is designed to change words like muggle will be come human Hogwarts and Ministry of Magic will have fake names, son on and so forth to protect our world, if a muggle is near by. This way both races can read and enjoy Amelia's adventures. OOC: Sorry, I miss read the instructions (thought they said a character that can thrive in both worlds or something like that), but I liked me cliche idea so much I decided to stick with it.

Hmmm...creating your own fantasy character was actually quite challenging as Ella had SO many ideas in mind and narrowing it down seemed nearly impossible. Eventually the blonde decided on doing a female character, since they hadn't had the chance to discuss those during the lesson. She also wanted to make sure that this girl was around her age, fifteen-ish, so she would appeal to students. Lots of kids bought fantasy comics, yeah?
Pulling her materials towards her, the badger began to sketch. She kind of added things as she went along, eventually settling on a girl who possessed bird-like qualities. Crowina, or Rina Stark as she was known during her regular life, was just a kid who discovered she possessed abilities associated with crows. She was able to fly when needed, could foresee the future, and had above average intelligence. All of this enabled her to travel around and prevent bad things from happening to good people.
When the blonde was finished she sat back and bit her lip, wondering if a character like this would be interesting to others as well. Hmmmm.

Draw a picture?!
...but WHYYYY?! Sierra loathed drawing pictures. She just thought they were pointless and useless and had nothing to do with magical children living in a magical world. Besides, she knew what she wanted to be, and she didn't need any drawing skills for that.
In the next few seconds, she found herself getting out all the materials she'd need to create the picture. Yes, she'd do it anyway. Why? ... Because, well, she had to. She didn't really want to draw a Muggle comic book character. Blahhh... Oh, well It was just one drawing. Hopefully.
She ended up drawing this supersmart Muggle kid who could outsmart, outwit, and outlast just about anybody, criminals including. She ended up drawing what she imagined the cover of the comic book to look like, complete with her name as the author.
Once she was done, she sat back and looked over her work.
