A set of paths link the courtyard to various areas of the grounds. It's nice to walk along either on your own or with a friend. The trees on either side of the path help to create a light atmosphere. So go on, take your time and soak up the fresh air, heaven knows students need it.
Tay smiled at him, "I do feel special." She closed her eyes and her smile sweeten as he ran a hand through her curls. Taylor loved when people gently messed with her hair.

Alice skipped down the Pathways, staring at the stones set into the ground all the while. They were layered so that one stone was set on top of the other, and it was quite an intricate pattern. The tiny lioness wondered how people came up with such eccentric designs. HUMPH. She was stumped. But she knew one thing for sure; when she ruled the world, she was going to make sure all of the pathways in the world were as pretty and special as the ones in Hogwarts.
Queen Alice. The third year smiled. She quite liked that title. Countless classmates called her that, teasing her because they thought she'd never rule the world. It would serve them right when they all worked for her. But a couple of people knew that taking over the world wasn't a joke, e.g. her partner in crime, Edvard Messer. Or Selena Zabini-Riddle, the crazed, pygmy-puff obsessed Slytherin Head Girl who she was constantly at odds with. Or her favourite seventh year, Emma Malfoy, the person who had first introduced her to pranks and world domination. One day, she'd be just like Emma, and infest little first year's minds as well. One day.

Cornelius watched as Aspen began to unwrap the gift, seeming happy with the wrapping but not saying anything at all. He wondered vaguely why she hadn't said anything yet, trying to understand exactly how she was feeling. But he didn't have much time to think on extra things as Aspen kept his attention, attaching the bow playfully to his chest and forcing him to surpress a smile. He hadn't expected that. He hadn't expected to be so...enthralled with her. But he was.
He had been sure that when he saw Aspen, all he would think about was that kiss she had with Joao. He figured it would be the thing he couldn't get off his mind. And though the mere thought of it still made him feel ill, he surprisingly found that he wasn't thinking about it at all. He couldn't. His mind just didn't have any room for it as his light brown eyes focused in on Aspen as she took out the necklace and examined it thoroughly. His gaze swept over her expression, taking in every detail of her greedily, not realizing how much he had missed her. But seeing her again made him realize just how much he had missed seeing her face, being around her in general.
He was snapped out of his daze as she started moving back her hair, offering him the necklace in a silent request that he help her put it on. He gave a brief nod before taking the necklace into his hands and stepping towards her until they were face to face, much closer than he originally anticipated they would be. But he couldn't say that he minded. Cornelius gently reached around her to fasten the clasp of the necklace, doing so within a couple seconds, and then setting it softly down around her neck. Once this task was done, he slowly retrieved his arms from practically around her, a momentary reluctance in his pace. But he didn't move back yet. He didn't step away simply because he enjoyed being next to her again, and he couldn't quite bring himself to separate entirely from her once more. He allowed his gaze to note how the necklace looked on her before, unable to help it, his light brown eyes found her lighter ones and got stuck there.
And just like she wasn't oblivious to the recent changes in Cornelius, Aspen noted the... more immediate changes. She couldn't be sure exactly what was going on in his head (in spite of desperately wanting to know), but he seemed less... less something. Rigid? More at ease.
Once he had the necklace clasped (and Aspen silently wondered if he'd done this before), Aspen plucked the goblin from her chest and inspected it from a new, upside down angle. She turned it over a few times, before getting her fill and enclosing the charm in her fist.
It was a thoughtful gift, and probably deserved a thoughtful thanks. But... that wasn't really Aspen and instead of a big thanks with gushing about the gift, Aspen simply stepped forward and gave Cornelius a hug. It was one armed, since she kept her goblin charm clasped in her first, but a hug all the same, with her cheek nuzzled against his shoulder.

Cornelius watched quietly as Aspen inspected her necklace from a new angle, still a little unsure if she liked it or not. But he didn't say anything, simply watching her examine it quietly in her hand. And then, very suddenly it seemed, he found himself being hugged. Before he had even really registered that she was moving, he had found that one of her arms was around him and soon realized he was being thanked in a hug, rather than in words.
His eyebrows rose at the gesture, his body tensing up suddenly as she hugged him, obviously not having expected an embrace or anything. He paused, unsure what to do. He hadn't hugged her in what seemed like years. It took a moment, but Cornelius soon relaxed, gently wrapping his arms around her to return the warm gesture quietly. Somehow hugging her felt more comfortable than just standing there, staring at one another. He wanted to ask her things; important things. Lots of things about how she was and if she had been happy the past month and a half they had been apart. Mostly, he was a bit worried about her. He kept hearing about her changing the colors of Paulie's pants and various other acts that seemed very...irrational to the young man who hadn't had the chance to talk to her at all in a long while. And so, in the middle of this warm hug, he allowed himself to ask a question, simply because he needed to know.

"Are you doing alright, Aspen?"
Aspen was very, very close to pulling back from him. He hadn't... hugged her back, not initially, and she just hadn't expected that. She didn't really know WHAT to expect, not since he'd spent over a month avoiding her but... but...
...but he did return one. Eventually. Aspen was dying to asking him WHY he waited, and what he was thinking, but she also doubted he'd answer.
Or she'd hate the answer.
".... yes. I missed you again though. You were mad at me," Aspen explained to his shoulder, "so I guess I get it. Or deserve it. I don't know. I'm fine." She was mostly fine. She missed him though, and hated that ... that the ONE person in the school that bothered to know her didn't want to anymore. No more ACEs, no more schedule arranging, no more anything.

Cornelius didn't know exactly what he had expected her to say. He couldn't deny that he felt better knowing that she was at least fine, at least she didn't have anything horrible going on in her life since they had last spoken. And he was glad to hear that; he wanted her to be alright. But for whatever reason, he hadn't really expected her to tell him that she missed him. He remained in a slightly surprised quiet as Aspen informed him that she had 'missed him again', recalling that he was mad at her but that she figured that she deserved it or something. He didn't really like looking back on their last conversation together in the Great Hall, he didn't like losing his temper even slightly. Cornelius very rarely got upset, but whenever he did, he always felt slightly uncomfortable about it.
"Yeah, I was pretty mad at you," he agreed softly. There was no getting around the betrayal he felt throughout the following couple of weeks without her, the anger he felt in general about the entire situation. But eventually, the anger had dwindled substantially and instead slowly began to reveal the empty void she had left in his life.
He hadn't expected to tell her about that void though. He didn't plan to bring it up to the girl, but her own statements threw him off, and very suddenly he wanted her to know about the void. "I missed you a lot," he admitted to her quietly, brows furrowing as he recalled the last month or so without any communication. "I kept wishing that I could stay angry with you, so I wouldn't miss you so much." His voice dwindled to barely above a whisper, so close to her that little volume was really required. "But I kept thinking about you."

That just wasn't satisfying to Aspen Odessa. In fact, she pulled back from Cornelius entirely, her little goblin still clasped in her hand. For a change though, Aspen wore her hurt feelings right there, right for him to see, right in her eyes and the pull of her lips.
"If you don't want to miss me then simply don't. Why would you wish to stay mad? And for what?" She took another step away from him. Then another.
She couldn't stop shaking her head at him. Aspen didn't want to do this. No, no no. "I don't understand. I'm wishing for you stop being mad because I miss you and you're wishing to stay mad so won't miss me."
She took yet another step. The beginnings of a retreat.

Folding her arms, Emma walked down the pathways. Merlin. She couldn't believe that this might be one of the last times that she would get to walk down here. Her life at Hogwarts had been very different from what she had expected as a first year. She remembered running down here in her first and second year with Selena and then running to meet Alex with a deep blush. Then in her fourth year and fifth, Braeden and her would walk down her, hand in hand, laughing about the day. And in her sixth year, she and Selena were back to running down here as quickly as they could with Kent, Selena's pygmy puff. She smiled as she reminisced these moments.
She continued walking down the path and she paused slightly as she recognized a shorter blonde girl. Hold on a minute. Was that little Alice? Emma's brown eyes widened. Woah. Alice had grown a lot. Emma was taken back a little as she walked towards the other girl.
She remembered the first time she had met the adorable yet feisty girl. Emma had rescued her from drowning in the fountain. Well, maybe she wouldn't have drowned if she had stayed in there; however, it had appeared to Emma that Alice was in trouble. "Alice!" she cried, rushing over to her favourite third year. Alice was like the younger sister that she had always wanted, and Emma felt obliged to teach her all of her tricks. She threw her arms around the girl and hugged her. "How are you? I've missed you so much. What have you been up to?" she asked with a happy smile. Oh how she had missed her little Alice!

Alice was still staring at the stones when someone rammed into her. Wait. That wasn't an accident. Someone was hugging her. ASSAULT! The lioness wriggled out of the tall person's arms until she was facing Emma. EMMA! The first year, ignoring the fact that she hated hugs, squeezed Emma back. She hadn't seen her friend in a long time. Too long of a time. "Emma!" The girl's face broke out into a grin and she beamed up at the tall Slytherin. "I'm great! I've been scheming a lot. And I found a partner-in-crime! And I'm in the process of getting a second one." A lot had happened since she had seen the snake last.
"How are you? How's your boyfriend? How is life?" The third year started launching questions at her friend. She had seen Selena more often than Emma this year. She suspected it was because Emma was studying for the NEWTs. She was too practical. "Have you been studying? Have you schemed lately? Where have you been?" Ohkay. Maybe she should let Emma answer now. Pause.
Breathe.

Emma smiled as Alice hugged her back. Aww, Alice had missed her too! Emma raised an eyebrow and beamed like a proud older sister as she learnt that Alice had made progress. "Scheming a lot? That's wonderful! Two partner's in crime? Congratulations. You three will definitely be unstoppable when you guys team up and prank," added Emma with a warm smile. She was so proud of Alice. And before Emma could say anything else, the young blonde was firing a ton of questions at her. Interrogating mode, much?
"[B]Woah! Woah! Woah. Slow down there, Alice, for a second please![B]" asked Emma as she held her hands up in the air, trying to process what the girl had said. Right. Emma nodded and began answering Alice's question's. "I'm well. I just have been very busy. Braeden's wonderful. I saw him over Christmas. It was a blast. He's doing very well. Life is going well except very hectic. I'm trying to balance studying with a social life," admitted Emma with a small smile as she continued to explain everything that had been happening to her. She paused slightly, taking a deep breath.
Then she continued. "Yes, I have been studying. I've been stuck under a pile of books. Seventh year is an exhausting year.. And sadly, I haven't schemed lately. Perhaps we could do some scheming together later? ... And I've been under a pile of books. Where have you been? And how have you been?" asked Emma, turning all the questions to Alice. Hehe. It was Alice's turn to face the interrogation of the Malfoy.

"Well," the lioness frowned. "I haven't made much progress yet, because my partner, Ed, and I always make the mistake of bringing candy to our meetings, and we get distracted." Alice grinned. Emma would understand, she shared her love of candy, as did Selena. She guessed it was just something awesome people had in common. "BUT. We did decide to keep a Ravenclaw representative at Hogwarts when we reign, and that is where my third partner comes in." Hmph. Preparing to be a ruler was NOT easy.
The short girl didn't like hearing about Emma's love life. She was still with the same boy who had kissed another girl in her first term, was she not? That boy better have come to his senses already, or Alice would have to do something about it. "Has Brae messed anything up yet?" the lioness asked straightforwardly. Then she scrunched her nose. "Is studying horrid? I hate exams. Are you nervous for the NEWTs?" Ha. Emma didn't need to answer that question; the third year knew that she was extremely serious about her studies.
Alice sighed. "I've been scheming, of course! And it's HARD. I have to arrange to make Duck Ponds, intricate pathways, asylums for Hufflepuff prefects, sanctuaries for fishies, and sweet shops when I rule. I'm swamped with work." The girl's Agenda had grown and grown. And she had to find more players for her and Ed's summertime Quidditch game. WAIIIIT. Emma played Quidditch, didn;t she? "Emma, do you by any chance play the positions of Seeker or Keeper well?" Please say yes.. -crosses fingers-

Ed? She knew an Ed. She had met a guy called Ed on the Hogwarts Express last year when she shared a compartment with him and a flirty boy named Cornelius. Could that have been the same Ed? Hmm.. Emma didn't know. She pursed her lips. "Ed, hey? So what house is your partner from?" asked the blonde before smiling again, "Distracted by candy? Well candy's a good distraction at times. Selena and I often get distracted from taking over the world when we hang out.." admitted Emma shrugging her shoulders nonchalantly. Eh. Candy was candy. Emma loved candy and knew exactly what Alice meant.
Her warm brown eyes widened and she folded her arms. Ha, that was very much to the point. She laughed slightly, shaking her head. "No, he hasn't. Alice, I'm getting the feeling that you don't particularly like Braeden that much. He's lovely. Honestly, I'm sure that you two will get along if you meet or when you do," added Emma with another warm smile.
Merlin. She was glad when the subject changed. "Studying is a lot of work and I don't enjoy exams either but it isn't horrid. I mean- its just something you have to do.. Except Selena claims that she's allergic to studying," admitted Emma, folding her arms again as she recalled a previous conversation that she had shared with Selena about NEWTS. Emma wished that she could just not study; however, she would only worry more if she didn't study at all. The Malfoy smirked. Nervous about NEWTS? Umm.. Yes? "Very nervous," she added, frowning slightly.
Wow. Emma had thought that she had enough on her plate but when she heard what was on the small third year's plate, her eyes widened. "Sounds like you have a ton to do. If you need any help, let me know!" offered Emma with a wide smile. It sounded to Emma that Alice might need a little help. Quidditch? A sparkle appeared in Emma's eyes as she smiled at Alice. She was so passionate about Quidditch. She was the Quidditch Obsessed Malfoy after all. "I play Seeker quite well. I've been playing both Seeker and Chaser for years; however, I have only played Chaser on the Slytherin Quidditch team," she explained before raising an eyebrow at her young companion. "Why do you want to know? Are you planning to create a Quidditch club?" Because if so, Emma would join in a heartbeat.

"Hufflepuff," Alice answered. Why? Did Emma know him? Oh. That would be terrific if Emma and Ed had already hit it off! "You and Selena got distracted? Well. That's either because Selena brought Kent with her or somebody brought candy." The lioness grinned. Emma's best friend was quite a character. But who could blame them for getting distracted by candy? Candy was almost as awesome as SuperGlue. Hmph. But nothing could beat SuperGlue. EVER.
Emma's boyfriend. The one who Emma was all sad and mushy about last year. And now she was saying that he's lovely? But Alice didn't want to say anything. She didn't want to bring the subject up. "Well.. I can't be quick to judge, since I've never met him. But I remember how sad you were last term, when you two had a fight. And I don't like it when you're sad." The third year paused and then giggled. "Does it feel weird to know that a thirteen year old is giving you relationship advice?"
A smile played across the lioness' lips. "Ha. Did Selena ever agree to studying with you?" She had thought Sel would rather eat candy. And play with her Pygmy Puff. Or anything but study."You shouldn't worry, Em, I'm sure you're going to do great on the NEWTs." And she was. Because she was very, very smart. And she had been studying a lot.
"Yes, it's tiring." The young girl spoke as if she had the world's burden all her shoulder.. which she very much did, seeing as all of this would have to be done when the world really was all hers. "I think I might not build the asylum for the crazed Hufflepuff Prefects. 'Cause I think the pathways and duck ponds and fish sanctuaries are more important." Yes. She really loved the fishies. "Really? You can play seeker? That's terrific. 'Cause my partner, Ed, and I, are going to have a giant Quidditch match in the holiday. And Emma can be Seeker!" Alice beamed. "Does Selena still not play Quidditch? If so, then she can be referee."

Cornelius definitely hadn't expected this sort of response from Aspen. He didn't know what he had expected, but it wasn't this. He hadn't even been intending to tell her about how much he was missing her and now that he had, she wasn't taking it well at all. But he realized why as she began to ask her questions, backing away from him and shaking her head back and forth without pause. "I..." he began, but in the next second he saw her expression in a way he never had before. She was looking at him with all of her hurt feelings prominently displayed on her face, her eyes looking at him as though he'd thrown some unforgiveable insult at her. And he didn't like it at all.
"No, Aspen, I didn't mean it like that," he immediately began to speak, his light brown eyes watching her helplessly as he took a couple steps towards her, trying to get her to stay. She didn't understand, and he realized how his words must have sounded to her. "It's not that...It's not that missing you is bad..." He paused, trying to figure out how to explain it all to her.
"I just...I got really.." he searched for the proper word to describe his emotions for when he heard about her kiss with Joao. "...hurt." He glanced over at her with his own set of hurt feelings prominently displayed on his expression, staring straight back at her. "And I felt really stupid, because I thought..." He paused again, his light brown eyes falling to the snow beneath their feet, obviously feeling rather stupid once more. "I thought that you liked me." He said it quietly, brows furrowing for a moment before he quickly moved on, trying not to linger on the statement.
"So, no, over the break, I did not think that missing you would be a good thing," Cornelius explained, looking back to her as he attempted to get her to understand. "Because...Because I should still be mad at you." Shouldn't he? After what happened, shouldn't he have the right to be upset? "And I was, but then..." He searched her expression, once more finding himself taking in every detail of her features. "But then, but then I just kept thinking about you, and I just started missing you. And I only wished that I could stop missing you because I felt like...like I was being stupid again, and getting my hopes up."
Before he could stop himself, he had said something else without thinking, "Please don't go yet."

"I DO like you. You know it, too, because I've told you. You've told me. We've talked about it," Aspen began, no longer retreating but.... entirely exasperated. "I don't know why you choose to forget. I guess I get why you're hurt and I never meant to do that, but what am I supposed to do about it now? If you dont' want to miss me, or hang out anymore,or anything - then fine. Just say so and you won't see me." Though, he was already pretty good at not seeing her when he wished for it to be that way.
Aspen crossed her arms and refused to look at him. She already knew he was hurt, she didn't want to see it again right now. Selfish, perhaps, but she couldn't take it at the moment. She had enough stress, enough uncertainty in her life. Cornelius was that one person that helped alleviate it - not add heaps of stress TO it.
"If you should still be mad at me, then be mad. I'll stay out of your way." Entirely. Completely. Cease to exist. "That'll help you not miss me."
She wouldn't say so, because it ... it bothered to even THINK it, but she did think Cornelius was being stupid. Why would he keep hope down? Why was he THIS bothered? Why was kissing SO important? With her little goblin still clasped tightly in her palm, Aspen stared off at a tree.
No way! It was planning on being her until the very end. He promised his old friends that he would.
"Does she act weird? I heard that some act weird? Like scary weird." Fin gave her a serious look which doesn't happen that often. "I went to Beauxbations and the I got kicked out then I was home schooled." He hated Beauxbations it was a horrible place for him.
Weird..? "Well..." Actually, Delilah was a bit weird. But it was a good weird. "A bit, but I don't think that's because she's a vegetarian..." Nope, she was just a bit strange. Then again - Aurora liked her that way... she wouldn't be Delilah if she was completely normal...
"Why did you get kicked out?" she asked curiously - after all, people didn't just get expelled for little things and she wondered what on Earth he could have done wrong to be kicked out... As for homeschooling... well... she knew what that was like.

Cornelius stood quietly as Aspen began to respond to him, speaking more than she normally did as she attempted to get her views across. His eyebrows rose a bit at her words, not realizing that this was how she saw it. "It's not that I don't want to see you, Aspen," he complained honestly, "I don't want you to stay out of my way, I don't want you to be out of my life, I don't want any of that!" He tried to find eye contact with her as she stared past him at a tree he presumed was somewhere in the distance.
"I want the exact opposite of that, I want you around all the time, okay?" he tried his best to clarify, obviously getting a little upset himself. Couldn't she understand? That if they stayed together, or friends, or whatever, he would just be more and more upset if Joao was in the picture? "But if you're...if you and Joao are..." he visibly paused, trying to avoid saying it, "...together..then I can't keep remembering how much I like you. Because then I'm just hurting all the time."
He hated having to explain this, and he let out a brief sigh after his words were out, hoping desperately that she understood it. "Wouldn't you be afraid to keep liking me if you had heard that I kissed some girl?"

"You should ask me, Cornelius! Ask me if I'm with Joao. Ask him, too. But don't punish me because you made an assumption and don't punish me because I don't understand what you WANT," Aspen finally did look at him, albeit briefly.
EVERYONE wanted something from Aspen. Everyone. Even Cornelius wasn't happy with her anymore.
"No. I wouldn't be afraid. I'd have questions, but not fear. But that's fine. Be afraid. You can ALL be afraid of me, all of you. You. Paulie. Joao. All of you, I don't care." Which was a rare lie out of Aspen Odessa, a rare and obvious lie. She did care.
"Go obliviate yourself if it helps." And with that, Aspen turned and ran away.

Cornelius was stunned. He didn't...he couldn't find anything to say as Aspen Odessa did nothing less than explode at him with logic he didn't quite want to hear. Luckily, he didn't have any time to try and find something to say, as Aspen kept a steady stream of what she thought he should be doing, ending the entire rant with a rather harsh suggestion that made him feel as though his heart might have stopped beating entirely. She was upset. Really upset.
And he hadn't expected her to really care that much, honestly, because he had spent so much time just assuming that she had bigger feelings for Joao. And she was right. He was assuming things. But before he could even try and sort out what that meant for them, she was already running away from him, leaving the confused boy helplessly behind.
"Aspen!" he called, but quite clearly, she wasn't planning on turning around.

Harvey walked to the pathways with Ella by his side, his best friend. It still felt a little strange that she was his best friend now but he was happy that she was. After all that ice-cream they had they were out for some fresh air, crisp and cold.
