The first floor was... certainly busier in a different way than Professor Schirmer's own usual haunt of the third level. Less injured children she supposed, and more Dash. She wondered if the professors of the first floor were more social as a result and made up her mind to befriend the healer. Third floor solidarity.
The classroom she'd chosen for the defense lesson had been one of her favourites as a student, and the tall blonde woman was a little bit dismayed to see how dusty and unused it was. Really, Hogwarts was it so hard to keep yourself clean? Even with elves that were off doing goodness knew what? A few quick charms and minutes later the room was sparkling.
Literally.
Unlike most of the Defense rooms, this one featured bright windows that allowed the light to stream in, diffused with colours and generally giving the room a bright and happy feel. The view looked out over the lake. There were no desks or chairs in the room and even the professor took a seat on the ground, waiting there with her feet tucked up comfortably beneath her for the students to arrive. She had a stack of books next to her and looked serene, if a bit distant.
When it was time, she charmed the doors to open, and greeted the students as they begin to file in.
ooc: the lesson will begin approximately 7.5 hours from the time of this post I'm simply opening it now so you can post arriving if you want to. The lesson has begun! Please act as if you were here all along if you haven't yet posted, latecomers will likely lose points. Please remember to follow Professor Schirmer's rules which can be found here.

Questions: What do you know, or think you know, about the Patronus Charm?
Discuss amongst yourselves some famous witches and wizards and their known Patronus forms. Given what we know about them; their achievements, their experiences, what do you think their Patronus form indicates about their personalities?
For those of you who can cast a Corporeal Patronus and know what form it takes, see if you can match up how it fits your personality. Younger students, you can work with students who do have a known Spirit Guardian, or you can look up mine, which is a Dove, or Headmaster Tate's which is a Mountain Goat, or that of another adult you know, even some of the historical figures we were discussing.
"I want you to think of your happiest memory. Something strong enough that you can focus on it easily, maybe something that makes you smile. It doesn't have to be relating to love. If you have more than one, lucky you! You can experiment to see which is best. You don't have to share it if you don't want to, but feel free to put your hand up and share if you do.

The party is still going, you can help yourself to food or drink while we wait for a guest fetched via a patronus message. In the meantime the professor wants to know who can cast a patronus already and whether its corporeal or non-corporeal.
PLEASE be realistic with your character's abilities. The patronus charm is ADVANCED magic and little firsties should NOT be able to manage it. For the purposes of this class please pay attention to the following:
6th & 7th years: May be able to cast a corporeal or non-corporeal patronus, depending on character's skill level and experience. May learn how to do one or the other during the lesson.
5th years: May be able to cast non-corporeal patronus, depending on character's skill level and experience, very FEW and RARELY may a 5th year manage a corporeal patronus. May learn how to do one or the other during the lesson.
4th years: Depending on character's skill level and experience, very FEW and RARELY may a 4th year manage a non-corporeal patronus. May learn a non-corporeal patronus during the lesson.
3rd years: Depending on character's skill level and experience, may learn a non-corporeal patronus during the lesson. But its okay for them NOT to learn how yet too.
1st & 2nd years: Depending on character's skill level and experience, may learn an UNSTABLE non-corporeal patronus during the lesson. This means they might manage a slight whisp, but otherwise should NOT be able to cast a patronus. Its okay for them NOT to learn how yet too.
When we get to the spell casting aspect of the lesson, please note that anyone not being realistic may have their post edited or deleted, which I don't WANT to do but we're not all Harry Potter! For reference, Althea learned hers in 6th year non-corporeally, and managed a corporeal patronus in 7th year. Remember, just because your character might not be able to do it yet, it doesn't mean they never will!
As you saw, Professor Scabior came because I sent him a Patronus message. What do you think are the benefits of communicating via Patronus?
"Alright are you all ready to give it a go? Stand up if you are and make sure you give each other a bit of space. Wands out. The incantation is Expecto Patronum. Ecks-PEK-toh pa-TRO-num. You simply need to point your wand and focus really hard on that strong happy memory. Practice the incantation a few times to get the hang of it and then you may start. Those of you who can already manage it, please do encourage the younger ones and let them see how you do it. I have an activity for you too, that we'll start in a little while!"
Please note, I'm waiting to get an all clear regarding the recent Malware threat on SS before continuing, not because of any risk, rather because several people may be staying away right now and I'd rather be sure nobody is left at a disadvantage because they don't feel safe accessing the site. Having been watching everyone else's attempt while trying to keep her own focus up, her smile widened a little once she realized just who that giant horse belonged to. Of course that would be his. She had no idea what it symbolized though. Nevertheless, she finally blinked and turned her gaze away down to her own patronus who happened to look up to her. Hmmm. Oh wait! They were starting the game thingy.

They were going to try and send messages? Now this was something she actually wanted to do.
Looking around at the others whom the Professor named, Evelyn's smile faded somewhat as she stared at them. She pretty much didn't like most of them. The Professor wouldn't be able to hear what the messages were saying, would she? Because this could be mighty fun if she couldn't. The Slytherin stood where she was though, having already been on one side of the room....just awaiting Professor Scabior's instructions.
Ashley was pretty certain he would probably never be able to produce a patronus, no matter how much he practiced. Nothing had even happened with his first few attempts, and he was at least hoping for that weird little wispy light he saw some of the others manage. Perhaps his memory just wasn't happy enough. But it was the same one he'd used to make that floaty potion work, so shouldn't it be good enough for this too? He tried again, making sure he had the words right, and was thinking firmly of that memory. But yet again, nothing happened. Could the professor help with that? Asking couldn't hurt, could it? She had said to come over, after all. So he reluctantly headed over to the professor, hoping he wouldn't be the only one. That would just be embarrassing.
Althea was about to answer and point out that he was saying the incantation wrong, but she didn't need to because a student stepped up to help. She liked how well everyone was working together. It was lovely. She smiled encouragingly at William.
"If you're sure." Althea answered and then nodded as the girl went ahead and began to try the spell.
....
Sigh.
Althea didn't make comment. Gryffindors apparently hadn't changed one bit since she was in school.
"Do you mean does a Patronus have to be corporeal to deliver a message? Yes. A non-corporeal Patronus can't. As for sending a message, you add that into your focus when you cast it, but you won't need to worry about trying that until you can actually manage a Patronus in a few years. Just practice the spell, dear and focus as best you can."
What was going on there?
"Are you alright?" Althea headed over, looking concerned.
"You're absolutely right about the chocolate." Althea commented, watching the young Hufflepuff. She smiled whimsically. "Five points for you for remembering that and recommending it."
"Ecks-PEK-toh pa-TRO-num." Althea offered up the correct pronunciation and smiled. "Just keep practising." Now that it was permitted.

"Alright who is still having trouble? Come over by me and we'll work on it together. If you've had a bit of a result, keep practising on your own, you're all working so hard, great job." She nodded at them.
And as for those older kids.
"Those of you who can cast a corporeal patronus are going to play a game of Patronus whispers. I want you to send messages to each other in turn and try to keep it from getting garbled, Da... Professor Scabior will start you off and I'd like you to all spread out around the room and cast a Muffliato charm, or similar around you so that the others who are playing won't be able to make out the message and cheat. We'll pass it around and see how well you can all focus so that your spirit animal can pass the secret message on. If you participate you'll earn house points, and get some practice in for your particular homework, which will be different from the students who can't yet cast a corporeal form." Althea informed them.
"Who is going to play? Evelyn Flores, Lexi Kennedy, Arya Lovegoods, Josh Carter... anyone else?"
ooc: younger students and those who can't do a corporeal Patronus should keep practising or go over to Professor Schirmer for help. There is still opportunity to earn more house points by practising and working together to help each other

See? Yeah...she saw, but Kurumi didn't feel any more confident about producing her own patronus. "Um...thank you Josh. I'll...certainly try." There was a reason why this spell was so advanced and she was pretty sure that as a fourth year she was a hopeless case. Which made her feel more awkward since people were probably expecting her to be able to produce one... maybe she was over thinking all of this? Kurumi popped the rest of her chocolate in her mouth and allowed it to melt on her tongue before closing her eyes again and focussing on a single memory this time. She remembered the sound of the piano, the blush on her cheeks, the... she stopped heself there as the warmth of the memory filled her. "EXPECTO PATRONUM!" she sort of whispered shouted. If nothing happened this time, then there probably was just no patronus producing for her today.
She opened her eyes again and looked at her wand. Nothing. Feeling slightly defeated, Kurumi sat down on the ground and crossed her legs. Yep, time for another break.
Of course she'd try. She had to give it a try because Josh knew that the Kurumi he knew was very well skilled enough to deal with this. So, lowering his wand a bit and causing the silvery horse vanish again, Josh focused his attention on watching Kurumi this time as she was attempting to perform the spell.
With a little smile he watched her try and pronounce the incantation. Well...there seemed to be no silver mist in sight yet. But the boy's smile did not vanish despite the disappointed look on the lioness' face. Quite the opposide, the smile widening, he first kneeled down before her and put a hand on her shoulder, looking into her eyes. ''Don't give up. I know and am sure that you are capable of whatever i can do. And probably capable of even more than that. You just need to practice. That's all. Keep trying. Lions do not give in. Never ever.'' Then he winked at her and rose back on his feet to look up at the professor as she spoke again.

His name was mentioned there...along with three others. They were going to play a game? Now that was going to be interesting but...there was a problem. No matter how big his patronus was Josh had not tried sending messages before. To be honest, he had not casted the horse around much since the day he finally managed to master it...the form, at least.
''Professor!'' so he asked for the woman's attention raising his free hand. ''I am not sure about how to send messages with my patronus.''
He did not know if she had mentioned it before but still...it was a fact that the Gryffindor did not know how to do it. But of course he always had ideas.
''Do we just form the message in our minds and order the animal to deliver it mentally?''

Kourt glanced curiously over towards the older students who apparently were going to be participating in a game. It sounded fun, but much too advanced for herself and the other younger students. For now, she would settle on practicing.
She trailed after a third year Slytherin to a place near Professor Schirmer, and then raised her wand again. Expecto Patronum...Expecto Patronum....
She drew her happy memory back to her and spoke. "Expecto Patronum!!" Concentrating hard at the memory, she opened her eyes and frowned.
"Professor? If the memory worked well with the potion..but isn't seemingly working for the actual charm...what could be the problem? Concentration? Or is a happier memory needed?"
Kennedy listened to what Professor Schirmer said and then looked back at his wand. He was growing frustrated with this charm. It wasn't working. Maybe it was because his energy levels had gone down since it felt like this lesson was going on forever. Or, maybe he was doing something wrong, but he doubted that because he was doing everything as it had been instructed.
Maybe his wand was broken?
Maybe he needed chocolate?
Yeah, the latter sounded right. Not really, but he didn't want the chocolate, so he made his way to the table and got himself some sweet, tasty chocolate. Hopefully this would help him re-energize. He munched on it calmly when he realized what the problem in his not-producing-a-patronus dilemma was. His happy thought was probably not happy enough. Why did it have to be happy thoughts? Who came up with that?
Kennedy shrugged his thoughts away and after he finished eating his snack he went back to his spot. This time he straightened his back and concentrated on a very happy memory. He wasn't thinking of anything else, but the feeling that the memory made him remember. Finally, when he thought he was ready he went for it. "Expecto Patronum!" he said....
...A silvery material seem to slither from his wand. His eyes grew wide with excitement and the silvery thing began to expand, but then it was gone.
Just like that.
To Kennedy though, it was the best thing ever! A huge smile stretched his lips. "Did anyone see that?" he asked to no one in particular.

I know that Keefer was helping you, but since the Professor has assigned the older students to another task, maybe I could help for the time being. On my last attempt I was able to produce a whispy thread for at least 10 seconds. I'm definitely not an expert yet, but maybe I could help you do the same thing too, and maybe William if he still needs help."Alyssa offered.

Minerva went over and put a hand on Williams shoulder. "Don't be frustrated. Practice can be fun when your around people you like." She smiled, "Now make sure you are thinking of a really strong memory. When I finally got mine to work it was because of you, well all of you. I was watching everyone do their practicing and see all my friends and you made me think of how happy and blessed I am to have such great people around. Then I went to practice myself and got the spot of silver. I need to get that strong feeling back and maybe I can get something again. Keep working though you will get it."

Waving her wand a bit in disappointment and was about to practice saying the spell again when Josh came over and *SQUEAK* kneeled down in front of her. She felt the blush in her cheeks rise and her eyes widened. Thankfully, she was well beyond her hair changing colors around Josh - that seemed to be reserved for Jonathan only these days, hehe - but her heart did begin to race a bit. His smiled managed to bring a matching one to her face as well and she reached a small hand up and placed it on top of his. "T-T-Thank you Josh," she smiled, nodding slightly. Josh really did know the right things to say and she was really happy that she had had that chance encounter with him in Diagon Alley. Her wand hand reached into her pocket for a moment to feel the chocolate wrapper from that day.

Hearing the professor move the lesson around, Kurumi smiled and pushed herself off the ground, bowing to Josh in appreciation, and nibbling a bit more on the chocolate she had grabbed from earlier. Yep, she felt better now after a short break and some much needed sugar.
Adjusting her robes a bit, she walked over to Professor Schirmer, wand still in hand. "I am still struggling a bit professor," she said with the slightest of frowns on her face. Still, Josh had reminded her that Gryffindors never gave up which was probably more to do with being stubborn that anything in certain situations so the frown faded into a neutral expression with perhaps a small hint of a smile on the corners of her lips. "Professor Schirmer, is it possible to, um, simply not have the life experience to produce a memory strong enough to conjure a patronus?" The fourth year was seriously having doubts about her abilities in that field...but she could also not have followed Josh's instruction closely enough.
Self doubt. It was a horrible thing sometimes.

Since Harvey had managed to produce a little smokey wisp here and there he decided to practice on his own. He then saw that Alyssa, William and Minnie were working together. He smiled he enjoyed seeing them working together, Mybe Minnie wont think that she doesnt have any friends, when from this angle it looks like Alyssa is her friend as she asked Minnie to work with her. So Minnie you havent lost all your friends you have me and Alyssa at least, maybe more he smiled to himself and tried to produce something.
He closed his eyes thought of his happiest memory and let it fill him up. He then spoke the incantation "Ecks-PEK-toh pa-TRO-num!" he opened his eyes but he saw that nothing had happened. He tried again and again and again but still nothing happened. He then thought of another memory, he let it fill him up and he spoke the incantation "Ecks-PEK-toh pa-TRO-num!" he then opened his eyes to see a definite smokey thing come out of his wand. He was surprised at the strength of it, and he recalled the memory and he was pained why did that memory produce a strong wispy smokey thing. I was hoping that the memory I had before would be my happiest, how come this memory has suddenly become my happiest. Why this memory, well I guess I should have expected it to my happiest now that.... he thought he then tried once more. He let the new memory fill him up and then "Ecks-PEK-toh pa-TRO-num!" he opened his eyes to see some smoke come out of his wand before disappearing. He was shocked and happy at the same time.
Ashley couldn't figure out exactly what was wrong, so all he could do was hope that maybe this was normal. But then he overheard a question that could actually explain exactly what was going on. He tried to listen in for the professor's answer to the query, without looking like a creeper, at the same time as trying to perhaps just think of another memory. But it had taken so long to come up with the one he had... Really, this whole thing was a little annoying.

Harvey couldnt help but overhear what Alyssa was saying, and suddenly it was all clear to him now. What he had to do in order to produce the smokey thing that was coming out of his wand So THAT is what I have to do in order to create that smoky whispy thing everytime! he then went over to Alyssa "That is VERY good advice Alyssa. Thanks, I know you were telling Minnie the advice but I couldnt help but overhear what you were saying and I have to say it will help me. Thanks." he said giving her a smile, before walking away to try again.
He pointed out his wand in front of him, he then did as Alyssa had said. He thought of a memory, ok check, he then thought of his other happy memory and let it fill him up to the point that he could not just laugh with joy but scream and shout with joy "Ecks-PEK-toh pa-TRO-num!" he then looked at his wand, it vibrated and a definite smoky wisp came out. Now he decided to rest, he was feeling slighly weak for some reason. So he decided to watch his classmates practice for a little while.
Minerva went over and put a hand on Williams shoulder. "Don't be frustrated. Practice can be fun when your around people you like." She smiled, "Now make sure you are thinking of a really strong memory. When I finally got mine to work it was because of you, well all of you. I was watching everyone do their practicing and see all my friends and you made me think of how happy and blessed I am to have such great people around. This is the last time I am going to try this spell" William explained to Minerva. William concentrates really hard on something happy. Ariana Sat down on the floor unwrapping her chocolate that lexi had given her. She popped the piece into her mouth and ate it. Ariana LOVED chocolate. she then began to practice some more "Expecto patronum!" She said as her happy memory filled her up & that small silver String popped out from the end of her wand
...Since they had to be all encouraging for the younger students and whatnot, Evelyn stood up and took out her wand, thinking of that happy memory that seemed to work for her before pointing her wand in front of her. "Expecto Patronum." The words were easy to pronounced from having done so a good handful of times before, however, no matter how many times she's done this spell, or will do in the future, it still caused a smile to appear on her face. As usual for her, it started out as a wisp of silvery light first before it grew into the corporeal patronus she'd seen before.
A caracal.
It bounded around her once before sitting still in front of her, staring at the others. Obviously, it was the cutest patronus. Well...in Evelyn's opinion it was.
Violet gasped in admiration as the creature--what was it, anyway?!--bounded around the older Slytherin. She had done that so easily, too! Violet took her wand and tried to recapture that wonderful memory she had been thinking of earlier when they were using the potion. She thought as hard as she could and once more felt the warm, safe feelings rising up within her. She pointed her wand and said the incantation: "Expecto Patronum!" and looked expectantly at the tip of her wand to see ... exactly nothing ... (well, you didn't really think you'd get one the first time, did you, Violet?)

Minerva listened to all her friends that were working really hard. "William you will get this. Don't get so upset." Minerva thought about some great memories and smiled. "Expecto Patronum" a little silver wisp came out of her wand. She smiled, because that was good enough for her for now.

Though he wasn't familiar with the Muffliato spell, he gave it a try anyways. "Muffliato," he said. Nothing happened. I wonder what's supposed to happen, did I do it wrong? He tried casting it again, just to make sure.
He watched the younger students separate themselves from the older ones. "Good luck with your Patronuses!" he said to the students he had been helping.
This left Keefer to wait for Professor Scabior to start the message around. He wasn't very confident in his ability to send a message with a Patronus, since they hadn't been told how to and he had only managed a corporeal Patronus once.
Nate decided to try the charm again. He thought back, scouring his mind for a happy memory. Aha! he thought, The first time I went into Hogsmeade with Faina. He focused hard on this memory and said, "Expecto Patronum!"
A silver spark flickered from his wand tip, then vanished. "Aw man... Pardon me, Professor?"
Violet had cast the Patronus charm like about seven times, all with very little result. Toward the end, she kind of thought she might see some kind of trickle of smoke or something at the end of her wand, but it could have just been her eyes watering from concentrating too hard. It certainly looked nothing like the older students' efforts. She was starting to get frustrated and had lost her happy feelings from the memory by now.

Arya's attention turned fully to the professor again when she spoke and she bounced on her toes a bit. That sounded fun! Even if it did mean shehad to work with Evelyn. Turning back to Alyssa, she smiled proudly as the girl went off to help others and continue practicing. She was such a good badger.
She leaned against part od the window by the spot she'd chosen far from the other students, both old and young, not yet casting muffliato. "Pretty much, Josh. Just add the message in with with everything else your concentrating on, and when you cast it'll get delivered." If it was done right. Sometimes she didn't do it right. Distractions and all.

Wait a second. She had called him in here to TEACH? Okay, it was more like playing a game...but still. Dash's eyes narrowed at the Charms Professor. It made sense to him now why she had been acting nice to him. Instead of making a big fuss about it Scabior shrugged it off. Althea was going to owe him for this, he would make sure of it.

Pulling out his wand, he flicked his wrist casting the buzzing charm around him.
Choosing the strongest memory he could think of, Scabior cast his Patronus, a large eagle, which swooped around him a few times before it shot toward the person the message was intended for; Josh Carter. If the boy didn't know how to send a message, he would have to learn now
