The first floor was... certainly busier in a different way than Professor Schirmer's own usual haunt of the third level. Less injured children she supposed, and more Dash. She wondered if the professors of the first floor were more social as a result and made up her mind to befriend the healer. Third floor solidarity.

The classroom she'd chosen for the defense lesson had been one of her favourites as a student, and the tall blonde woman was a little bit dismayed to see how dusty and unused it was. Really, Hogwarts was it so hard to keep yourself clean? Even with elves that were off doing goodness knew what? A few quick charms and minutes later the room was sparkling.

Literally.

Unlike most of the Defense rooms, this one featured bright windows that allowed the light to stream in, diffused with colours and generally giving the room a bright and happy feel. The view looked out over the lake. There were no desks or chairs in the room and even the professor took a seat on the ground, waiting there with her feet tucked up comfortably beneath her for the students to arrive. She had a stack of books next to her and looked serene, if a bit distant.

When it was time, she charmed the doors to open, and greeted the students as they begin to file in.

What do you know, or think you know, about the Patronus Charm?

Discuss amongst yourselves some famous witches and wizards and their known Patronus forms. Given what we know about them; their achievements, their experiences, what do you think their Patronus form indicates about their personalities?

For those of you who can cast a Corporeal Patronus and know what form it takes, see if you can match up how it fits your personality. Younger students, you can work with students who do have a known Spirit Guardian, or you can look up mine, which is a Dove, or Headmaster Tate's which is a Mountain Goat, or that of another adult you know, even some of the historical figures we were discussing.

"I want you to think of your happiest memory. Something strong enough that you can focus on it easily, maybe something that makes you smile. It doesn't have to be relating to love. If you have more than one, lucky you! You can experiment to see which is best. You don't have to share it if you don't want to, but feel free to put your hand up and share if you do.

edit: Activity still running, only please focus on the third part, AKA testing out your happy memory with a levitation potion.

The party is still going, you can help yourself to food or drink while we wait for a guest fetched via a patronus message. In the meantime the professor wants to know who can cast a patronus already and whether its corporeal or non-corporeal.

PLEASE be realistic with your character's abilities. The patronus charm is ADVANCED magic and little firsties should NOT be able to manage it. For the purposes of this class please pay attention to the following:

6th & 7th years: May be able to cast a corporeal or non-corporeal patronus, depending on character's skill level and experience. May learn how to do one or the other during the lesson.

5th years: May be able to cast non-corporeal patronus, depending on character's skill level and experience, very FEW and RARELY may a 5th year manage a corporeal patronus. May learn how to do one or the other during the lesson.

4th years: Depending on character's skill level and experience, very FEW and RARELY may a 4th year manage a non-corporeal patronus. May learn a non-corporeal patronus during the lesson.

3rd years: Depending on character's skill level and experience, may learn a non-corporeal patronus during the lesson. But its okay for them NOT to learn how yet too.

1st & 2nd years: Depending on character's skill level and experience, may learn an UNSTABLE non-corporeal patronus during the lesson. This means they might manage a slight whisp, but otherwise should NOT be able to cast a patronus. Its okay for them NOT to learn how yet too.

When we get to the spell casting aspect of the lesson, please note that anyone not being realistic may have their post edited or deleted, which I don't WANT to do but we're not all Harry Potter! For reference, Althea learned hers in 6th year non-corporeally, and managed a corporeal patronus in 7th year. Remember, just because your character might not be able to do it yet, it doesn't mean they never will!

"Alright are you all ready to give it a go? Stand up if you are and make sure you give each other a bit of space. Wands out. The incantation is Expecto Patronum. Ecks-PEK-toh pa-TRO-num. You simply need to point your wand and focus really hard on that strong happy memory. Practice the incantation a few times to get the hang of it and then you may start. Those of you who can already manage it, please do encourage the younger ones and let them see how you do it. I have an activity for you too, that we'll start in a little while!"

Please note, I'm waiting to get an all clear regarding the recent Malware threat on SS before continuing, not because of any risk, rather because several people may be staying away right now and I'd rather be sure nobody is left at a disadvantage because they don't feel safe accessing the site. Expect that the lesson will continue on sunday. Everything is all clear

Although he'd decided to just stay in one place, Ashley was pleased with his two inches off the ground. He wondered how long he could stay up there. Especially since he didn't exactly like the idea of having to burp to get down. Would it really hurt him to stay there? He wasn't flying around ten feet off the floor, after all. Maybe he could get extra long robes made, and just float around two inches higher forever. Hey, maybe he was a normal height now, too! That was definitely a plus side. Except... not really. He still needed a couple more inches for that, sadly.

Tiffany thought of the memory she remembered and of a sudden she felt that her body was getting further and further from the ground. She was actually floating in the air. She moved slowly. She enjoyed the feeling of it. She would love to stay in the air as long as she could. She smiled.

Nessie felt a burp sliding up her throat. She let it out and cringed at her own unladylike behavior. Madam Finch would cringe at her if she could she her now. She slowly started to float down to the ground. She finally touched ground and all her anxiety washed away.

Aah yes... The failed trip into the black lake. Jordan laughed, "If we hadn't gotten caught, I think that would've levitated me quite high!" he said before nodding in understanding, Maxwell and Josie were perfect for eachother!

Maxwell laughed as well. "I think it would've been the perfect adventure, Mate. Any success in controlling your abilities?" He asked thinking of the picture book he bought for Jordan hoping he could use it to try and look like the creatures in the pictures.

Gideon closed his eyes as he sank back to the ground, resuming his position off to the one side of the room. The Gryffindor searching his memories of something....anything that had possibility of being a more powerful memory then the family gathering. It took some time but finally a moment hit him thought he was a little skeptical.

Could it work? Was his first kiss with Selina a memory to try the potion with?

The moment and memory in question had taken him by surprise and wasn't too overly happy a memory at least compared to others in his short 15 years but it was probably the fact that it had come right after the agony of the quidditch defeat that it had successfully filled him up with such positive energy. Taking a deep breath, he swallowed some more of the potion and focused all his thoughts on that moment, the boy slowly raising above the ground in response and reaching twice the height of the few inches of the moment before.

Houston we have lift off!

When Nate walked back into the DADA room after his bit of fresh air, he found that Jordan had already met up with a friend, and a third person was joining them. Feeling encouraged (especially since these were a group of hopefully-impressable Gryffindors), Nate walked over and said, "Hello, you three!"

Good Merlin she couldn't believe she was doing this. Althea mentally face palmed before withdrawing her wand and focusing on a strong happy memory, and on the message she wanted to send.

She cast her patronus, a silvery dove, which flew around the room gracefully a few times, looping around the students and then disappeared in a rush out a window.

"Hopefully our guest will be here soon, in the meantime which of you are able to cast a corporeal or non-corporeal patronus? Please raise your hand and indicate which you can do, no spell-casting yet though please."

Tori slowly let out one last long burp and her feet touched the ground at last. She smiled at the sight of all the food and hurried over to get a plate and a beverage. Once her plate was piled high with food, Tori returned to her seat near her ~~second~~ favorite professor and beamed up at the woman happily.

Yeah, she didn't know how to make a patronus. No, she wasn't expecting to be able to make one anytime soon. But yes, she was curious to see who their special guest would be.

Oh snap! Nate hadn't seen that coming, though he probably should have. "Right... Permission..." He hadn't thought of something so small (but crucial) like permission when his mind was ll a jumble over Pam and Faina. Today wasn't a good class day for Nate. Not only was he unable to perform the charm, which ticked him off, but he also had managed to lose points twice! Yikes! Nonetheless, he listened intently to Professor Schirmer, and hoped that his participation in setting up the party could earn back some points. He raised his hand once the question was asked. "Well, I've got absolutely nothing. Not even air came out of my wand when I tried earlier..." Which you took points for... Nate put his hand back down, becoming mad at himself just for being a first year. It truly unsettled him not to be able to cast the spell taught in class. Especially by the Charms professor, of all people to be teaching. Charms was his favorite subject!

Victoria listened carefully to the professor's instructions. She starred at the floating dove in aw as the professor performed the Patronus. Victoria hoped that she'll be able to make a corporeal form, but she had heard that rarely any fifth year students are able to.

Oooh...they're going to have a guest coming? Victoria wondered curiously who it'll be. Maybe he or she will teach them how to make a corporeal Patronus?

Victoria thought about it carefully, then raised her hand in the air to let the professor know what she can perform...possibly. "I guess I can perform a non-corporeal Patronus. I can try to do a corporeal one, but I doubt I'll get it right." It's not that Victoria doesn't have the faith in herself, it's because she doesn't want to get her hopes to high and ends up disappointed.

Kourtney turned her attention towards the professor as she called the class to attention again. Upon explaining a bit more about Patronuses, Professor Schirmer called forth her own, a beautiful dove, that flew around the room. Wow. She wondered if she was ever going to be able to do that?

The young Gryffindor watched as the dove flew from the room, and couldn't help but wonder who their unexpected guest would be?

No...no, she certainly couldn't create one. She hadn't even tried yet. Though she imagined that they would try it, at least once during the lesson. That made Kourt just a tad nervous. She knew that they weren't expected to be successful, but still...

Ohhh, niiice! Vashti watched with interest as Professor Schirmer's dove Patronus flew around the classroom before soaring out the window. That was a COOL Patronus. Why couldn't she cast a Patronus like that? Not fair. Whoever the guest was, she didn't really think about. She just hoped they had a cool Patronus too. But most were, so that was likely.

Still, she raised her hand. "I've been practicing for awhile, Professor, and I've been able to cast a non-corporeal Patronus most of the time." No corporeal one though, which was what she really wanted. Sigh.

Wiliam raised his hand. " I have two questions" William told the professor. " I am still young and do not think I can cast this spell, so what do I do? Willaim asked the professor. " What happens if you think you have more than one Patronus or more specifically, if you do not know which Patronus you are at all?" Willaim asked the professor.

Scabior didn't pretend that he understood the Charms Professor at all. He had swooped into her first class and she had been extremely uptight and basically kicked him out....and yet now she was calling him over to the DADA lesson she was teaching.

He opened the door to the classroom and stepped inside, surprised to see that there were no desks at all in Althea's set up. "You rang?" The man asked dully. "Hello class." Scabior added.

Minerva grabbed her food and headed to a seat next to William. She listened to his questions and wondered the same thing. Being a first year she knew she would never be able to do this, but was excited to see some of the older students do it. She really enjoyed seeing the dove fly around the room.

Ariana had practiced this charm at home plenty of times when her parents are away although she knew she wasn't suppose to & just never got anything. it was very depressing for her. Ariana raised her hand and waited for her turn "professor last time i tried i wasn't able to produce anything." Although, she thought, last time she didnt have such a powerful memory as this one. maybe this time would be diffrent
