It was the start of a new term, with new students, returning students and best of all... a new look to greenhouse six! Seren had been rather impressed with the way it all turned out. The refurbishment had gone better than anticipated. In the place of the old buckets and ponds which catered to the needs of numerous aquatic life, there were sparkling clean tanks of all shapes and sizes surrounding the skirts of the greenhouse and forming row upon row throughout...
Standing eye to eye with a tank that glowed greenish blue light upon her face, Seren admired the corals in its depth and inspected their convolutions, prongs and stubs.
OOC: The lesson has officially started. If you haven't done so already then please read through the Herbology Rules and Expectations and the SS Site Rules. All SS Board Rules apply. IC rule breaking will result in IC punishment, OOC rule breaking will result in OOC punishment. Please behave appropriately and most importantly... have fun. If you have any questions don't hesitate to send me a PM.

Alice liked Bentley. And tanks. So when they were put together, they OBVIOUSLY made for an awesome lesson. She had figured water plants would be the first things on everyone's mind, though she really didn't have any better ideas. But she raised her hand anyway. "I think that we'll be learning how to make plants, or more specifically, AQUATIC plants, comfortable in unfamiliar environments." Which was a really stupid answer, because Bentley had clearly been trying to imitate their ecosystem.
What? She had no BETTER ideas.

Taylor glanced around, thinking about the question and then looked at the professor, "Professor... would we perhaps be talking about underwater plants?" Tay thought that was a good guess since there was a tank full of corals. "Perhaps... salt water, to be more specific."

Seren smiled, "Nope, just in time," she mused. "And congratulations on your prefectship."
"Hello dear," she greeted warmly, placing a tick next to the Slytherin's name on her list.
Oohhh yay! Seren clapped her hands together happily. "Not quite, I did get a fair bit of help..." namely, she couldn't have done it without her dashing husband.
"Morning Nigel," Seren greeted with polite nod.
"Well, I assure you, you won't be eaten.... by a plant." She couldn't exactly say the same for his peers. If they all converged on him, she wouldn't be able to defend him. Though that was an unlikely scenario. "Oh... and congratulations on the prefectship."
"Good morning Gwen," she replied, giving the Ravenclaw a welcoming smile.
Seren returned Ethan's smile. "Oohh thank you," she replied brightly. She was exceptionally pleased that he approved.
Merlin!
Did the girl run from the castle or something? "Nope, you're on time..." she replied, offering the girl a sympathetic smile. "Take a moment to catch your breath dear."
"Oh ... dear."
Well that wasn't the least bit awkward. "Well I hope the next one makes up for it."
"Good morning dear," she replied brightly, ticking off another name on her list.
She'd been observing what appeared to be nothing, but she knew better than that... and suddenly, she heard a familiar voice beside her. "Ahh Dylan... well, sort of... not quite, but you'll see," she said with a wink.
"Morning Belle," she greeted, "Oh it was splendid, I hope yours went just as well."
It was difficult to process that Spike was now a seventh year... when did he grow? Or did it happen over the summer break? "Morning Spike," she replied... amused and thrilled with his approval. "You like it?"
After ticking off a few more names from her student list, Seren checked the time. It was definitely time to get started now.
"Alright, gather round!" she called out, waiting for the students to assemble into a makeshift group of some sort.
"Welcome and welcome back! Please bear in mind all classroom rules, and please use your common sense. Gloves, are to be worn at all time... with the exception of today, as you won't be needed them."
Seren cast a glance around the group, she couldn't hide her excitement, nope. "Now as many of you can see, greenhouse six has undergone a transformation... and I felt this was the perfect location to start our topic for the term." She paused here to give students the opportunity to think about what that might mean.
"Does anybody want to hazard a guess as to what we'll be studying this term?"... "Feel free to take a look around, raise you're hand when you think you've worked it out."
OOC: The lesson has officially started, do not announce your charrie arriving late if you have not posted already. Just pretend as if they've been here the whole time. Unless you want to lose points. The lesson will continue in approximately 10 hours from the time of this post. ONE answer/guess in your response please.

Just then Professor Bentley called for their attention and Ella gathered around with everyone else, noting the bit about gloves in the greenhouses. Gotcha. She bit her lip a bit as she thought about what they'd be learning about this term, knowing that water plants had been said several times already. Hmmm...
Raising her hand when she finally had an answer to share, the fourth year gave it a shot. "Professor, will we be studying Algae this term?"
Harvey was glad to be back in classes and stuff, he stood there as people answered the question. He decided to answer too.. might as well since he was here in class now "Are we going to be looking after whatever it is thats in that tank?" he smiled and asked as he answered the question and stood there. He then looked round and saw that Ella was there too, she seemed to look better so that was a good thing right? Well he thought so, he smiled a little at this thought and turned back to his professor to see what she said on his answer

When it sounded like the professor was going to officially start class, Sierra glanced up. She'd been looking down at her badge, which had come unpinned for some reason, and had been trying to pin it back on. It was all pinned back now, so she settled into place and listened to the professor.
No gloves today? Hmm. She'd brought them, but they were tucked away in her bag right now, and there they'd stay. So did she want to guess what the lesson was about? Or, the whole school year, really? Well, it wasn't really that hard, now was it? "Definitely magical water plants," she said, raising her hand. "Oh, and...nice job on remodeling the greenhouse, Professor. It looks pretty cool."
Mom says I have no sense of direction, so I packed my bags and right.

"Thank you Professor" Oakey said with a smile...
His smile turned into puzzlement when he quickly recalled what she said seconds before congratulating him...
She didn't just...no...that'd never happen.
He'd keep be keeping a closer eye on everything in the Greenhouse now. Nothing was going to catch him by surprise.
He did a quick double take and focused back on Professor Bently as she asked her question. " Will we be learning about Safe Aquatic Plants?" Oakey answered now a little more paranoid

Anya stifled a giggle at Rich's answer. That was... insanely adorable. She liked Rich and Aurora. ... in case anyone cared. But that wasn't really pertinent to this lesson.
Unless... it was, in which case... that was a random coincidence.
Ahem. Anyway. She stood up on her tip toes and cast a glance at the tank. Was it too much to hope for to assume that this year's lessons would be on how to drown evil plants so they don't go around eating your professors and captain!napping your best friend? Because... that would be a good lesson to have.
She raised her hand. "Is it about water plants?" she asked. She was tempted to ask if they were going to have a combined Care of Magical Creatures lesson this term, because, that would be fun. OH! Or muggle studies. Now that she thought about it, she NEEDED to know the effect of toy boats and rubber duckies on underwater plants.

Nigel looked around the greenhouse and noticed the water. And a lot more water than necessarily needed for the average plants. Maybe they would be doing something to do with underwater plants. Nigel had no idea if they existed or not. But they would be cool.
"Professor, Are we going to learn about plants that live in water?"
It was nice not to wear the gloves for once. Even though they were comfortable.

Seren eyed the Slytherin, and tried her best not to laugh out loud. It was an amusing theory though, and probably not a bad idea for something practical and long term. "No... not today."

So maybe that? The red head raised her hand. "Professor are we learning how to look after various plants in water tanks?" Because out in the wild was different right? Like a lilly pad here and in a river surely needed different kind of care? Or maybe it didn't? Pout. Caring for plants was clearly not alwyas so simple.

Good because she hadn't brought any. Lex had taken a real gamble with her life by wearing them to class last term and who knew, this term there might really be a dragon and no one would see it coming--no one but her because she was obviously waiting to see one!
She moved closer to the Professor, now she had a better look at the tank!
"Ummm...are we going to be learning about whatever this thing in here is?" She asked, giving the tank a few light taps.
It wasn't moving...definitely not very hazardous...

"To some extent," she mused, still not giving away the answer.

"Perhaps we could talk about it after the lesson?"
And with that, Spike went back to looking around the greenhouse, peering in tanks here and there. So much so, he nearly missed the first question of the lesson.
He tapped his finger lightly on his bottom lip as he thought about what they might be studying. Aquatic plants was a clear theme, but that seemed a bit too obvious for one of Professor Bentley's lessons. Hmm.
Spike paused at the glowing tank once more, and gave a thoughtful frown. It contained coral, but coral wasn't a plant - it was built by tiny animals. Did that mean the other tanks didn't just contain plants, but fish also?
Maybe it wasn't as simple as the type of plant - but the environment too. Hesitantly, he raised his hand. Listening to other people's answers, he wasn't too sure if he'd just over thought the whole thing.
"Well, sort of. We're not focusing on aquatic ecosystems, but ecosystems in general."
"Ecosystems, or biomes, play an important role in the study of herbology. Can anyone tell me what an ecosystem is?" This shouldn't be guesswork... and it was a basic enough concept for them to understand.
"Now would also be a good time to get your notebooks out... and bear in mind we will be moving around."

That word sounded awfully familiar from somewhere. Melanie ran her fingers through her hair and tried to remember where she had head it. Biomes... that was a word that Melanie had never heard of. Melanie pulled her notebook out of her bag and started to scribble in it. Ecosystems. It sounded familiar... but... she really couldn't remember from where at all. That wasn't of much help either. AH.
Elementary school. Melanie raised her hand. "An ecosystem is... the system... where all the living things interact with each other...?" She couldn't remember what she learned in elementary school. That was like forever ago! But it sounded somewhat right in her head.

Alyssa thought for awhile before raising her hand. "Professor an ecosystem is like a community of living things and non-living things living together. Like for example the fish and coral in a fish tank co-existing with the fake decorations."

Ecosystems.....Ecosystems....what in Merlin's white beard did Ella know about Ecosystems? She tried thinking back to her muggle schooling, knowing they'd done some talking about the things. They were...well made up of like everything, yeah? Like all the plants and people and animals and erm...stuff in a location? That was an Ecosystem? But how on earth was she meant to explain that?
Raising her hand, the blonde attempted to give it a shot anyway. "Erm Professor, an Ecosystem is like...all the living things in a particular area and erm...how they relate to each other and work together?" And if it sounded like a question it kind of was...Ella wasn't even sure if she was on the right track there.

Ecosystems, ecosystems, what did Sky remember about those......
Not much really. Which was just sad considering that they had just studied this stuff at her muggle school. Summer really had made her brain soft! Not good. At all. She racked her brain some more. Finally she had what she thought was the answer. "An ecosystem is all the animals and plants in a set area and the ways they relate to each other." At least, that better be it, or she was asking her Biology teacher for a refund on her time.

ECOSYSTEMS! This was even better than studying underwater plants in Anya's opinion. And it wasn't just because ecosystems was a fun word to say. (Which, for the record, it was.)
And it was times like this the brunette was grateful for all those years of muggle school.
In fact, she was pretty sure she had her primary school definition of it memorized. But where was the fun in spitting out a definition. She raised her hand. "It's the way the entire 'community', for example, a tank of water, all aspects, living and not, interact with each other." She then nodded as if to prove her point. Then she added, "It's also been referred to as the Circle of Life." Yeah... she watched The Lion King over the summer. She loved that movie.
And she'd refrain from bursting out in song... although she was extremely tempted to.

Would you look at that, the first Herbology class of the term and she actually knew the answer...sort of. It must have been because she was a second year; they were known for being smarter than firsties you know.
She raised her hand, feeling all proud of herself. "That's that thing that has to deal with animals and stuff living together right?" That was the answer right? It sounded right and that was good enough for her! It also sounded like what just about everyone else said...sort of. It was close enough and they were saying the same thing as each other so it was either she was right too or they were all wrong; either way would be fine with her. Misery likes company afterall.
She took another glance at the tank. What did that have to do with ecosystems...?

Mo was very busy pressing his face up against the glass of the tank and making squishy faces at the coral in the tank (coral... btw... animal... Was this CoMC?) and marveling over how pretty it all was. He kind of wanted a tank. With stuff in it. Not those fish that had to fight all the time, though, because honestly, how lame was a tank with only ONE fish?
Ecosystems, hmm? "S'like if you take all the plants and the animals and the way they work together to keep each other alive, right? I kind of think it has to do with environmental factors too, though... because a rainforest will need lots of rain and an equatorial climate to sustain all the plants and animals." But maybe that wasn't the technical definition. He just figured that all the plants and animals in a rainforest wouldn't survive, even if taken in entirety, if they were in a desert.

Audrey had loved learning about ecosystems in her old school, and she perked up when she realized they'd be studying them again.
She raised her hand, and when called upon, said "An ecosystem is biotic and abiotic factors interacting to make the community work. Abiotic means lack of life, so examples of abiotic components are things like rocks and the weather. Biotic factors are living things like plants and animals. "
"Ecosystems have to have composers, decomposers, non-living matter, and producers to work. Ecosystems mostly get their energy from the sun, through photosynthesis."
"In an ecosystem, everything is connected and even the littlest things can have a huge impact on an ecosystem if they are disturbed. Humans are making big changes to ecosystems. An example of this is over fishing and agricultural waste, among other things, threatening to take out coral reefs," she crossed her fingers that this was correct and she hadn't muddled the information or gone on too long.

OOC: The lesson will continue in approximately 12 hours. Please answer the QUESTION ONLY. Thank you (;
Aurora flicked open her notepad and took her quill from behind her ear, rolling her eyes a tiny bit at Richard. Couldn't he learn to study for himself? Hmm? Because she wouldn't be here next year and she really needed him to graduate...
She scrawled Ecosystems at the top of her parchment in her untidy handwriting and poised her quill for notes.
"An ecosystem is a group of plants and animals etcetera that interact and are kind of self sufficient in their environment." she said. That was right, wasn't it..? Something like that anyway... she was sure the word organism should be in there somewhere...
OOOH DID THEY GET TO BUILD THEIR OWN ECO SYSTEM OR SOMETHING?!
Not this term? ...Hm. Jake smiled. Cool. They would learn about his answer some other time. He rocked back in his feet to give his toes a break as he listened to a few students talking. Ecosystems. That sounded.... interesting, actually. AND Jake knew what they were.
"They're like... a..." No, he couldn't use 'ecosystem' to describe what an ecosystem was... "A community of living things that kind of... feed and grow off of each other." ...Very in-depth answer, there.
"Ecosystems, or biomes, play an important role in the study of herbology. Can anyone tell me what an ecosystem is?" This shouldn't be guesswork... and it was a basic enough concept for them to understand.

Rawdon opened his messenger bag and frowned when he realized that all of his notebooks were the same color. Fail! He shrugged his shoulders and decided to pick one in hopes that it was a blank one. The one in the middle was wedged in the bag, therefore it must have been used so he chose the one behind it and pulled it out of his bag just as the professor asked a question.
Now Vindictus was in deep thought and he subconsciously began to chew on his lower lip. Wait. This sounds vaguely familiar. Mum taught me something about this last year.
Suddenly his blue eyes lit up and he raised his hand. "Professor Bentley, an ecosystem is a community of living and non-living things that work together. These living and non-living things are connected and when these two parts work together, they make a balanced system," Rawdon answered.
He lowered his hand and rested it on the notebook that was resting on the table.
I sure hope that made sense.

No gloves? That was exciting. But West was FAR AND AWAY too intrigued by the contents of the tanks to actually give an answer.
BIOLUMINESCENCE WAS AWESOME!

Ecosystems? what? West looked up, blinking, and glanced at other kids, who'd apparently joined him while he'd been thinking about the TANK. Ecosystems?
He put his hand up. "Ecosystems are different growing areas where the stuff what grows there is effected by the climate or by chemicals, or humidity, or how high up in mountains or low down below sea level, or like, the actual location on the Earth, cos where it is effects all that other stuff, on account of latitude means closer or further from the hot part, the equator." He sort of paused and then added with a big happy smile, looking around the greenhouse, "You can use a greenhouse to make a mini-version of a ecosystem so you can grow things what wouldn't normally grow where you are."
Notebook out? Moving around?

Minerva gave a sigh of relief when she realized they wouldn't be working with dangerous plants today. She wanted to get the confidence back for the class, but she needed baby steps. Then something Sierra said made her jump a bit.. Were they in the actually greenhouse, how did she miss this specific detail. Looking around, yes it was redone and looked good.
Putting her hand up Minerva tried to think of the best way to describe an ecosystem for her answer, "Professor, an ecosystem is a community of living or nonliving things." Was that enough or should she have given more details. Well others were trying to answer as well, so Minerva decided to just leave it at that.

Alice was too busy looking at the tank to pay attention to Ecosystem chatter, but she put her hand up anyway. "An ecosystem is some kind of community of interacting, living.. THINGS.. and.. um.. their physical.. surroundings? Or settings or conditions.. basically, anything that affects it.. or something?"Or something was probably the right answer. She couldn't really make heads or tails of what she was saying. But.. that would make this a kind of an ecosystem. Because.. because Bentley had changed the surroundings to accommodate the plants, hadn't she?
Or something.
Mhm. She was just going to get out her notebook and ink and quill like a GOOD LITTLE GIRL and not say anything anymore, for fear of being confused. Because that tended to happen to her often during school hours.
