It was the start of a new term, with new students, returning students and best of all... a new look to greenhouse six! Seren had been rather impressed with the way it all turned out. The refurbishment had gone better than anticipated. In the place of the old buckets and ponds which catered to the needs of numerous aquatic life, there were sparkling clean tanks of all shapes and sizes surrounding the skirts of the greenhouse and forming row upon row throughout...
Standing eye to eye with a tank that glowed greenish blue light upon her face, Seren admired the corals in its depth and inspected their convolutions, prongs and stubs.
OOC: The lesson has officially started. If you haven't done so already then please read through the Herbology Rules and Expectations and the SS Site Rules. All SS Board Rules apply. IC rule breaking will result in IC punishment, OOC rule breaking will result in OOC punishment. Please behave appropriately and most importantly... have fun. If you have any questions don't hesitate to send me a PM.
Interesting. To the castle for the Herbology lesson. Sighing and picking her things back up Addie made sure everything was where it belonged then got up and began to walk briskly after the professor for Herbology, in the castle. It would be one interesting lesson.

Back to the castle? Mo was on board with field trips, but with Divination meeting at the lake and now Herbology in the castle, it sort of felt like no one was really happy with their current classroom location. Would they have Astronomy in the kitchen and Potions in the broom cupboard?
Come to think of it, both of those sounded amusing. Mo pondered the subject matter to make those lessons possible as he grabbed his bag and followed his classmates out the door.

To the castle for the continuation of the lesson? Jory found that interesting. He picked up his bag and followed Professor Bentley and the students. He wondered what was in store for them there.
SPOILER!!: Selective Responses -- but you ALL get points
Seren nodded, but faltered at the mention of decorations... "Decorations? Why in the name of jumping junipers would you ruin a perfectly good tank with something fake?" That... she didn't understand.
The circle of life... now that was a unique response, and she could understand that, even if the explanation wasn't provided. "Yes, very good."
Stuff?... Merlin.
"More or less," she nodded. Seren only hoped the Lioness was prepared to take notes this lesson, she would be needing those in the future.
Ahh brilliant! "Yes, absolutely... well done."
Seren agreed, nodding as the new Eagle voiced his thoughts. "Oh yes, absolutely.. there are numerous factors that make up an ecosystem."
0_______________0
Now THAT, was a standard Ravenclaw text book answer if ever she heard one. "Yes, very very good."
Balance. It was such a simple word and yet it described the topic perfectly.
Seren nodded, approving the young Vindictus' answer. "Balance... I couldn't have said it better myself."
Though West's answer was a round about way of getting to the point.. it was thrilling to see him verbalise his thoughts. "Yes, correct! There are numerous factors which characterise ecosystems, each as unique as the next."
Alice, was on the right track. She could see that... and perhaps by the end of the lesson she'd be able to better describe it. "Good... good," she nodded encouragingly.
Seren nodded as Nina, like Alice before her, fumbled through her response. "Yes.. good, you're on the right track."
And would you look at that... Seren beamed, nodding as Beatrice expressed her response. "Beautifully said." Simple as that.
What was this? Had she asked for a brief presentation?
Seren was mildly confused as the Slytherin launched into a broad explanation of the topic, with ... facts... and then sumarising her point. "Good..." she replied. She didn't quite have the heart to tell the girl that less was often more. She'd understand in time.
And then there was this Badger...
What was she going to do with her? "Not quite..."
But kudos to her for trying, that counted for something.
Seren stared at Theodore for a moment. That had to be one of the shortest and certainly least descriptive reponses... but he wasn't wrong. "That is an example of an ecosystem, yes... but perhaps work on defining what the concept means."
And yet another poorly worded response... but it wasn't so bad. Sophie did touch on the basics of it at least. "You're getting there," she encouraged.
An... arrangement? Well that was one way of putting it. "Sort of.... not quite..." she was still confused by the terminology...
All in all.... they had done fairly well. It was a simple enough concept to grasp in terms of basics, so she didn't need to worry about that. "Good, good... so you all have a sound understanding of what an ecosystem is." But just to reiterate... because reiterating cemented knowledge to memory... "Ecosystems, being systems, are formed through the interactions between organisms and their physical environment, both living and inanimate."
"Now many of you touched on points and aspects which make up ecosystems... characterises them and shapes them into what they are. Things to consider, when studying ecosystems," which is what they were doing, so notes on the following would be handy for them later, "... include solar energy, moisture, minerals, nutrients, soil, organisms and disturbances."
Now came the crucial part, which would significantly influence their success in this course of study... "Why... would understanding ecosystems be important to the study of herbology? What can we gain from this?"
OOC: The lesson will continue in approximately 12 hours. Remember not to edit your posts. There are no limitations in how you choose to answer this question.

Seren was amazed at how much the girl could talk... at least her answer was articulate. "Yes very good... there are numerous things it can tell us, but you didn't quite relate it to what we do here at school."
"Correct! well done."
"Wonderful answer Jory."
"Absolutely, well said."
Seren nodded... considering the Puffs answer. "That would depend on your definition of decent. Remember we're all individuals and while each ecosystem is essentially a set of circumstances which allow particular forms of life to thrive... it doesn't mean it's ideal."
"Mmmhhhmm... yes."
"Yes, very good."
"Nicely said Selina," she nodded.
She was on the right track... though seemed to be ever so slightly of course. "Yes... goood... though I meant for you to consider not just for yourself, but for all of us as to what we could gain from it to aid us and out study."
"Very well said."
Seren wasn't quite sure where her prefect was going with his answer... but as he finalised his statement the pieces came together. "Yes, good good."
Planet friendly? ..... "Mmm... yes... though perhaps consider how that knowledge helps us in our study."
"Yes, very good."
A sound response. "Yes, well done."
"Ahh yes very good."
Spike was impressing her today, but then again, he'd always achieved well in the subject. "Though it is possible to fascilitate a plants needs under a set of circumstances which vary to their own typical ecosystem, it can be tricky and sometimes impossible."
Adaptions! She was thrilled to hear that word, but they could get to that later.
Seren was pleased with the Slytherin's response, even if he wasn't which was a shame. "Not stupid at all, and in fact you raise an important point... human intervention. We do need to be mindful of how we behave and interact with ecosystems to ensure we don't disrupt the balance."
"Yes, very good," she nodded in approval.
Seren listened, patiently to the girls response. "Good, well said."
Seren couldn't help but beam at Alex's enthusiasm. "Yes, you're absolutely right... though, you didn't specify how it might aid our study of herbology."
"Good good." A sound response.
On the right track..
"Yes, very good."
Adaptions. Yes, understanding them was very important... without that knowledge proper care could not be administered. Seren smiled, nodding at West. "Well said."
Seren nodded. She was pleased that one of her new Lions was a smart cookie. "Yes, very good."
Seren nodded, agreeing with the girls statement.
Mmmm.. Seren wasn't quite sure how to approach the girls response. It wasn't wrong.. but it was missing something. "Yes... but it's important to not that without AN ecosystem, there would be others... one thing organisms are good at doing, some more so than others, is adapting..." she paused here to identify where else the girl went wrong. "In terms of herbology, it helps us understand care requirements for particular categories of plants as well as individual."
Seren nodded as Alexa responded, seeming to think out loud. "Yes, very good... though few plants are cannibals." So that was the least of their worries.
"Yes very good Harvey."
Simplistic, but correct. "Yes, good good."
This is progress. "Yes! absolutely, not only would we know more about it, but we'd be in a better position to fulfill its care requirements."
A fashion analogy? Well.. whatever works. "Very good Sierra."
Seren nodded, "yes, very good."
Well that was a different answer to what she had expected. "Yes." She wasn't wrong, but again it felt as though a key understanding was missing. "I wouldn't say we study ecosystems entirely, there is much that we do not focus on purely because our studies are concerned purely with flora. While it IS important for us to understand ecosystems as it influences care requirements, habitats and the progression of flora life, we do not need to isolate each minute aspect of the system in much depth."
The face pulling hadn't gone unnoticed.. but as the boy wasn't distracted from participating in the class discussion, she let it slide. "Yes, very well said."
Seren nodded as Dylan offered his thoughts on the matter. "Yes, very good... maintaining the balance is very important to us in terms of ensuring we administer the proper care requirements for all plants to thrive."
Seren was mildly confused with Oakey's answer.. she wondered if he understood what she had meant by disturbances. Instead of disapproving his answer, she opted to engage him on the subject of disturbances. "Consider... that disturbances cover a number of activities and occurrences which interfere with the balance nature had established... this includes floods, drought, fire, cyclones, human intervention and any other activity which is not common to the ecosystem."
Seren appreciated Melanie's silence. Sometimes listening and absorbing was the best way to learn.
"Yes, very good."
"That's a part of it... though I think all of its care requirements are important, not just soil alone."
Seren was rather pleased with their progress... and it helped that they had a sound understanding on the topic, even if it wasn't perfect. After all, they were here to learn.
"Alright, good... now gather you're things, we're going to head off and head up to the castle for our next activity." She paused for a moment, hoping to see some shocked faces... "Level one! Follow me!" she called out, now moving off ahead of them, "Keep up."
OOC: Lesson will continue in approximately 12 hours. Feel free to ask questions etc.
Dylan had no idea why the ecosystems were important to study and stuff cause well, he had never even heard of that word. So he stayed quiet while others answered the question. Others seemed to know the answer so he would absorb it into his memory and make note of it later, and... done! he knew why they were important, kinda boring though.. not like he actually needed to know all that since he wasnt going to grow plants or anything that needed to live with each other or together or whatever those answers meant. He knew them! he just.. needed to understand them a bit more thats all.. but he would ask maybe one of the older students or something a little later. He quickly got out a quill and parchment and wrote some of the answers down so that he could make sense of it all later.
Just then they were told to pick up their bags and follow them? meaning they werent having their lesson here? then what was with all these tanks?! Was his Head of House ok? He watched as everyone started following her to the castle, well he was going to stay here on his own that was for sure! No he was not scared of all these plants cause he was never scared of anything well he was sometimes but that was his secret so he picked up his bag and followed the class out wondering why they were going to the first floor! "Why we going there professor? Is it time for that surprise you told me about?" he asked even though he knew he would find out sooner or later but he couldnt help but ask the question cause thats what he was waiting for.

Anya blinked. Wait... why were the going inside? Weren't they studying... water ecosystems? There wasn't water inside.
Unless... they were flooding a classroom. Which, she wasn't going to lie, she fully supported that idea. Or flooding the dungeons. Those were practically underwater anyway, weren't they?
She literally shrugged off the thought and gathered her things. She then followed the rest of the class out to the castle.

Mika listened to all the responses and then felt herself begin to frown as they were moved to a new location. So those tanks weren't going to be used? No lesson on cleaning and caring for an ecosystem?
Frowns were needed there.
She wanted to learn how to get rid of invasive creatures and pests that could corrupt ecosystems. Still, begrudgingly she followed Professor Bentley to the next location. It BETTER be cool.

...Back to the castle? To study ecosystems? Jake stared at Professor Bentley for a moment before deciding to just.... go with it. What other choice was there, really? He fixed his bag on his shoulder and rocked back on his feet again before following the professor out of the greenhouse. He had to admit, he was interested to see where this class was headed.
Nina didn't answered the last question instead she listened and wrote down some of the answers her classmates gave and all of the sudden the professor told them to pick their stuff and move to the castle.
The castle. Really?
That is why she kinda liked this class because it was outside but what she could do? Nothing. So, she picked up her bag and headed back to the castle. Not happy at all.
He breathed a sigh of relief when Professor Bentley commented on his answer. Mum would have ruffled my hair and hugged me for that answer! But this was Hogwarts and not the garden back home.
Sigh.
Wait.
We're leaving? Rawdon realized that everyone was packing up and they were going to the Castle. He shoved his notebook and quill into his messenger bag and scrambled to his feet. Rawdon rushed to catch up with Mika and the professor because he didn't want to miss anything.

.. they were leaving the Greenhouses?
Alice wondered where they could be headed as she gathered up her notes, quills, and other belongings. Maybe Bentley had turned the Great Hall into a huge TANK. That probably wasn't it, but she hung on to her hope because that would be awesome. Extremely awesome. It would be even better if they could eat their meals in a tank. And so Alice followed her fellow classmates out of the Greenhouses, all the while thinking about food and tanks and other awesome things.

Peyton beamed at the professor and went back to jotting down notes. Her wrist was starting to ache...maybe...maybe she shouldn't be writing EVERYTHING her classmates were saying. Maybe just settle on the important details? Yeeeah, she should have thought that earlier. Meh, at least she had some good information down.
Oh? So now they were going inside. Did Hogwarts have like a super, top secret plant inside and...and they were going to learn about it? Naaah. Sure she's heard all sorts of things about Hogwarts ahem last year but maybe her imagination was taking it too far. Whatever it was, Peyton was ready to go. She picked up her belongings and did as told.
Today's lesson was definitely a good one - he was on a roll with answering, and it even involved a little field trip. And he was hoping he knew where they were going, because if they did go there, it'd be pretty epic. Spike had read about it aaaages ago, and had always wanted to investigate a little closer.
It didn't take long for Spike to shove his stuff back in his bag, and sling it over his shoulder. He followed Bentley out of the classroom, no sign of the grin disappearing from his face.

She'd lingered in the doorway a bit to make sure everyone was headed in the right direction and not trying to nick off for the day... she had been about to continue off toward the castle when she'd caught a few voices behind her.

Knowing that the Professor had much more in store for them though, the Ravenclaw quickly got her things together and was about to follow as they were told when...Level One? Did she mean first years? O.o
The Prefect immediately raised her hand, "Excuse me, Professor Seren. Er, level one?" What did she mean by that?
Seren nodded, "Mmhhmm, that's what I said."
She offered Beatrice a smile and nodded her head toward the others leaving. "Come on, you'll see why when we get there."

It was... surprising that this boy latched onto the idea of surprises. "Yes," she replied simply, only to indulge him. "Now run along..." she didn't want to be held back.. supervision was required.
There... that would do.
Walking off, quickly, Seren tried to catch up with the first lot to leave the greenhouse. It wasn't a difficult task, they weren't exactly in a hurry.
"Well, sort of. We're not focusing on aquatic ecosystems, but ecosystems in general."
"Ecosystems, or biomes, play an important role in the study of herbology. Can anyone tell me what an ecosystem is?" This shouldn't be guesswork... and it was a basic enough concept for them to understand.
"Now would also be a good time to get your notebooks out... and bear in mind we will be moving around."
Sarah knew what an ecosystem was, she had tested her muggle cousin on it for school. She knew how an ecosystem is a community of living an dnon living organisms living together and the what not, she took out her notebook and began writing her own points on an ecosystem, adding some other points she got from others.

Sarah thought the answer was pretty obvious, herbology was about plants and things, which form part of an ecosystem. Herbology probably applied ecosystems more then her muggle cousin did as her cousin lived in the city.
She wrote down each of the teacher questions and an answer to them in her notebook. She loved how the world was perfectly designed, like a chain, each item gives and takes.

Sarah's hand was hurting so she was glad that the theory part of the lesson was over. They were moving on. She just had a question. "The muggle world is very scared about crumbling ecosystems, about how Humans are abusing nture and soon nature wont exist etc. Can the magical world survive without ecosystems, making spells to imitate nature, like spells to give off oxygen or suck up carbon dioxide or decomposing spells?" Sarah said upon placing up her hand. She then gathered up all her supplies again, making sure that her gloves were on her. THey were. She tried to think for her own answer to the question as she followed the teacher.

Kat beamed at Bentley cos she said Kat said it well. ABSOLUTELY. Kat hadn't gotten a compliment in a while. Cos, duh, summer was there. She did get compliments from friends but it was a different thing to know that someone professional-ish said something good about her. Yay!
They were leaving. The blonde placed her parchment and stuff inside her slingbag. Yeah she was taking down notes for future references. Then she followed the rest of the class leave to 'level one'.
Sounded like the Ministry levels. HEH.

Minerva listened as the other students said their answers, everyone seemed to be doing a great job today and it was nice to do more lecture for the very first class. Minerva felt it got them adjusted to being back.
Then she looked at Professor Bentley with a little shock, going to the castle.. That was something that they never did. Hmmm wonder what they could be doing up there. Minerva got up and grabbed her things, making sure she hadn't let anything she followed the rest of the class.

Sooo disturbances covered more than just the plant itself being where it shouldn't be. It also included severe weather, fires, and us.
Errr, Herbology just wasn't his thing.
He listened to Bentley as she said the rest of the class would take place outside the classroom. "Yes!" Oakey beamed and gathered his things running out of the Greenhouse and followed the Professor back to the Castle.
Rowan quickly gathered up her things. She'd gotten a bit distracted by the wonderful tanks and had stopped to have a peek. She ran to catch up with the others, hoping she hadn't made herself late returning to the castle.

She quickly grabbed her bag and followed the professor to next part of the lesson.

The castle? For herbology? ...Do we have some plants in there that I haven't noticed? She grabbed her bag and scuttled along with the rest of the students towards the door. Oh, maybe we're going to see how we at the school are our own little ecosystem too? The students and teachers and house elves? Maybe! She hurried along, hoping to satisfy her curiosity with the reason for the change in location.
Belle eye's widened when they were leaving the classroom. Another lesson in another part of the castle. This was interesting. Plus they were going into the castle??? Belle's curiosity got the best of her and she picked up her things and started to follow the teacher.
Why was everyone moving where the classes were being held? Sue felt like once she got to a classroom she was up and moving again. Oh well, at least she was getting some exercise. Susan grabbed her things and started following the professor towards the castle.
