Default Ancient Runes Lesson I - Rune of Thor

Early and first thing in the morning after breakfast was the best time for Ancient Runes, the students will have open fresh minds and full stomachs. The classroom was arranged traditionally, Ab made sure nothing was hazardous to the kids when he redecorated the room. The desks and chairs were neatly organized in parallel five rows, that's one side of the big classroom. As you walk through the door and to your left is the professor's desk and blackboard. Professor Botros is sitting on his chair writing something on a parchment.

For this lesson, there is a small pile of mysterious tools next to each desk, it hardly reaches up to your knees. A piece of cloth is draped over to conceal what's underneath it. "Do not touch the pile next to your seat" is written on the blackboard behind the professor. If you do try to remove it with your hand, you'll feel a slight pinch. Do not touch.

Greet your new teacher, take a seat, write your name and year on the piece of parchment set on your table, and wait for the lesson to start. Please stay quiet and do not speak.

ooc:The class has officially STARTED. Don't announce your arrival but pretend you've been here all along. ^.^

Class progress:
- What are runes? What does the word 'rune' mean?
- Who is the person in the drawing? What is he holding? Why would we discuss them both in class?
- Identify some of the runes on the blackboard, and find their meanings.
- The solution to the trick question, rune of Uruz, and activity time!
- Extra question (courtesy of Gryffindor Captain) and Activity is still in progress!
- The End.

Okay, right. Runes, what were they? "They're symbols used to apply a spell or some sort of protection to something," Sky replied, mentally patting herself on the back both for remembering that and summing it up that well in one sentence. Good practice for History of Magic, anyway. But maybe this professor would want them to elaborate? In which case, she was out of ideas. Oops?

"Good morning everyone and welcome to your first Ancient Runes class this term." Botros started, giving looks to those not paying attention to him. The piles were obviously too intriguing for young people. "I'm Abraham Botros, your new Runes professor. Before we start I'd like us all to take a moment of silence in honor of the unfortunate professor before me." He bowed his head and clutched the cane with both his hands.

....

One moment was done. He raised his head slowly and continued, "This subject, as you all will see, is mostly a theoretical one which tends to give the wrong impression on most scholars" Tsk tsk tsk, shame. "Together we'll try to take small gradual steps in order to understand the sacred runes of Odin - Runic magic, in particular." They were wizards and witches afterall. So no, they were not about to learn how to write in runes. That was too boring.

He moved to the side and waved his wand at the blackboard, removing the earlier instruction. "Runes of Odin, runic magic, runic inscriptions. I keep repeating the word rune. Who knows what are runes? Or what does the word rune mean literally?" Positioning himself on the middle of his desk, he leaned on it and waited. "Raise your hand first, please."

Good morning... Captain

Dylan smirked at the older Professor. So far, they were getting off to a good start...because he loved being called Captain. So, for that...the Slytherin was going to be especially cooperative in this lesson.

BEAM.

So, the most basic question was being asked first...What are runes? Hmph. It seemed everyone was eager to answer and had...So, what could he offer? He hadn't really heard what answers had been provided....So many people were speaking at once. Merlin...

Raising, his hand as was instructed, the Slytherin grinned. "It's a mark of mysterious or magic significance..."

Zhenya smiled at the Professor. He was very kind. She was sure Runes might turn out being a good lesson, after all.

Now - What are Runes? Well, she studies a new type of lettering, and all runes meant something. She raised her hand and said "Professor, Runes are an alphabet, like a language." She wasn't sure if that was tooooo basic, or if he needed more of an answer but that was just about all she knew. That, and the other type of runic alphabet they used.

A moment of silence? Man. That was hard. Probably the hardest part of the whole class. West twitched but with superhuman effort managed to stay quiet. HOW LONG WAS A MOMENT ANYWAY?

He mentally reenacted the Quidditch game he'd seen with Aurora and Theo. And then he thought a bit about his new guitar and the lessons he was getting from Dylan. And then he decided he was still hungry and got jealous of the professor's apple, and then -- oh the moment was up!

His hand went up. "Rune comes from the root run- meaning 'secret' or 'whisper'." Which was a bit weird right? Secrets and whispers were hardly the same thing. "In Old Norse, run means 'mystery.'" Which made more sense to West since really, runes totally WERE mysterious. Mysterious and AWESOME. "In old Irish and Scotch Gaelic, run means 'secret' or 'mysterium,' and so does rhin in Middle Welsh." Was it clear that this was a topic dear to his heart?

"The root run- can also be found in the Baltic languages meaning 'speech', and if we're talking about the Elder Futhark runes --cos there's lots of different kinds of runes, they're magical symbols and they represent like, a real cool story of.... of like.... life, the universe, and everything." West's arms spread wide, theatrical emphasis, and he nearly knocked Theo in the face.

"They're a writing system and all that for sure," He waved a dismissive hand at some people who had said that. Boring answers. True but boring, "But they're also SOUNDS and POSTURES and INCANTATIONS they're basically magic without wands." He nodded excitedly, all big eyes. "They're for communication, divination and invocation, one of my books says that, professor." And he was spent. West slumped back in his seat as if he'd just put on a long and epic performance.

Encore?

Hmmm. Yeah. Professor Abraham Botros. The Headmistress had already introduced him back at the Start of Term Feast. As more of her peers came in, the brunette silently observed the new teacher, wondering how he was going to bring a new outlook of this subject that not many enjoyed. Also, she briefly wondered how old he was.

When they were all in, or so it seems.....she poured all her attention to the Professor as he spoke. Beezus grimaced slightly when he mentioned the former Ancient Runes Professor. Darn. She was going to miss Professor Christiansen. She'd been rather fond of him even though she couldn't understand a word of what he was saying. May he rest in peace.

...So, what were runes?

Literally.

Raising her hand, the Prefect answered, "Runes are letters in a certain set of ancient alphabet used to write various Germanic languages before the Latin alphabet was adopted."

Rawdon flipped open the cover of his yellow and black (thanks a lot, mum) notebook and wrote down the title of the notes:Runes of Odin - Runic Magic.

Wait. Were runes those funky scratches on the little bits of wood that mum keeps in that old mustard colored velvet bag? She yelled at me when I wanted to trick the gnomes into thinking they were food! Mum said that they were, um, ancient, some, er, letter-type things that made up, uh, an, um, alphabet thingie. Blah, blah, blah.

He slowly raised his hand. "Professor, runes are, um, characters or letters that form an alphabet . . . a runic alphabet," Rawdon answered.

When he finished giving his short answer, he noticed that the Dent Head girl was in the class. I wonder what magical potion she's taking to hide the dents created by that stupid real Bludger she just had to have....

The old man was...cute. I mean just look at him it was like having her grandpa here. Nina was surprised to know the former Ancient Runes professor passed away, so sad. After the moment of silence, the professor...Bottom? Boto? Umm well something like that, asked the first question which was an easy one.

What are runes? The girl raised her hand "They are letters that have different meanings and compose the runic alphabet " said Nina "And I think it means whisper" fingers crossed.

Botros kept the parchments in front of him, his cane balanced beside him on the table, and smiled nodding at the red head. "Good morning." It was a relief she was alone, he wasn't going to hear annoying chatter sounds...

... or not, really. The small Gryffindor had a strong dark brownish aura (which if you were as well-educated as Ab, you'd know to indicate fatigue or stress). "Good morning," making sure to stress every letter because her greeting didn't sound grammatically right. It's been a long time but he was one hundred percent sure eleven year olds knew how to talk.

He eyed her cautious hand and firmly but with his usual husky and soft voice replied, "Impatient Gryffindor, are we?" Besides "And 'squibbly' is not a real word." It appears that there's A LOT he had to teach them today.

He took his eyes off the screaming aura kid just in time to see a similarly small Ravenclaw having a dilemma holdin-- okay, that's it. He waved his wand and lifted all her things off the floor and even out of her arms, "Let me help." They floated through the air and were set down on a desk on the first raw, next to the impatient Gryffindor. "And good morning to you too." She tried to get his name but no worries, introductions are for a bit later.

He nodded back at the next Ravenclaw, took an extra moment to examine her badge and figure out she was one of the Prefects. "Good morning." He should try extra hard to remember this one's name, might come in handy if something required running since it's a bit hard to run with a cane.

Aw, wasn't this Slytherin a lovely polite one? Botros' face softened as she approached, "Hello Zhenya. I hope you had a good breakfast." He was big on breakfasts when it came to kids. His own kids and their kids had their share of punishment and detentions for skipping that important meal. Watching the girl retreat back to one of the seats, the old man's eyes went to his watch.

A quiet one walked in, Botros acknowledge the boy and his shiny hair for a second before getting back to his parchments. Soon, the same boy seemed to remember that it was actually okay to say something to the old man behind the desk. Ab smiled and nodded at him, "Good morning... Captain." Another badge. This one actually might do him better than the Prefect girl. Boys were made for physical fatigue, and this one could be a perfect fit for Botros' running issue.

"Good morning," Ab's smiling face was getting more and more excited because everyone who walked in so far was fully awake. He expected sleepy heads, a lot of them. Apparently, though, university kids partied way too hard for his morning lessons.

The Hufflepuff uniform caught his attention before even the face that belonged to this Hufflepuff. Botros smiled, a bit nostalgically, at the robe and then up at the boy. "Good morning to you, young lad. Thank you, it's a pleasure to be here again." The professor's eyes continued to look at the boy as he claimed a seat and started writing his name and year. Aah, good ole' times.

Aw, another Hufflepuff. This time she was way smaller than the boy before her. "Good morning, dear." Was her face always so pale and stressed? Abraham watched her for a second pick a desk, she wasn't about to run away, was she? He'd motion for the captain to run after her if she did because, really, Runes don't bite.

It was as if all the Hufflepuffs went up the stairs together! "Good day to you too, my boy." Ab extended his smile over to the hufflepuff boy and slowly grabbed his cane, preparing himself to stand up and walk down the few steps closer to the students' desks. Even if his knees didn't work well, Abraham never sat in his classroom until it was over.

Still holding on to his cane, Abraham used the desk to lift himself off the chair balancing his weight on both hands. A Gryffindor was approaching by the time he got his back up straight and moved a single step forward. "Hello, I'm doing great, thank you. I hope you had your breakfast, today." She looked like a good kid. Bony good kid. He ranted in his head about today's criteria for girls to get pretty. They encouraged them to starve themselves, those kids were soon going to look like matchsticks barely attached to their body.

Botros, instinctively, bowed back to the back. He knew those traditions and respected them. "Thank you, Prefect." The name of the boy was missing but soon he'll try to memorize them. He set a goal for himself today, at least the student leaders' names should be memorized.

Oh yeah, that was more like it. Ab smiled and patted the girl's head. "Good morning, dear. I hope you had something to eat before coming to class." She looked like she JUST left her bed. That was no brain for this subject.

This one's aura was awfully wrong. Ab's soft smile fell to a sympathetic one. "Good morning, my boy." He followed the Hufflepuff's heavy steps until he slumped onto a seat. Something was definitely wrong with him. Maybe he didn't like this subject? Poor dear.

Now that he'd stood up, there was no need for his cane all that much. But as was his habit, he held on to it and moved to stand in front of his desk. "Good morning to you too and thank you." They were very nice and welcoming today. Hopefully they stay that way when he starts handing out homework and activities?

Botros started walking between the desks, careful he didn't bump to touch the piles set between the rows. "Good morning," he said toward the Snake girl, and watched her for a moment write her name down.

Another pale-faced and stressed young girl. Ab's face softened as he greeted her back, "Good morning." They were so cute stressing over a subject in school. He was so glad he ditched changed the subjects of his teaching to children - they were so lovely.

Nodding and keeping his smile, Botros noticed the new Snake girl. "Good morning, dear." He saw her follow his instructions and satisfied moved his attention to the younger students trying to decipher the mystery that is the pile by their desks.

The professor moved back to his desk and leaned on its edge, "Good morning, young boy." Ravenclaws were usually the curious ones as this boy proved by staring hungrily at the pile. But he didn't attempt to touch it, that was good.

An interesting note would be most of the sleepy heads today were Gryffindors. And Gryffindor prefects. Botros kept his smile and nodded back at the boy, "Good morning." He wanted to mention breakfast, too, but the boy has probably JUST dragged himself out of bed. There was no point. Maybe the feast from the day before still had its effect on them.

A passing Hufflepuff kid. "Good morning, Caprain Dixon." Another captain to use in case of emergencies. This one was a soft girl, though, Ab's first option was STILL the boy captain. Merlin's beard were all the leading roles taken by females in this school?! Hopefully there was another captain boy.

Not that he had problems with females in leading roles, but his nature always got the best of him and he rarely let himself ask a tiresome task of a female. They were like glass, easy to shatter.

Another bony kid. Abraham inclined his head at the Slytherin, "Good morning, dear." He really, really hoped this one had some breakfast before getting to class. She looked as though she was about to faint any moment.

Aw, more polite students. Ab should keep track of those. "Good morning, dear. Thank you. Welcome to Ancient Runes yourself." He should've said this to all the previous welcoming kids. Oh well, he was about to say it in a few moments.

"Good morning." At least this Gryffindor wasn't so sleepy. He smiled softly at her as she walked over to an empty seat and started writing her name and year.

Definitely a social one this Hufflepuff. Abraham smiled at him, cautiously because it was the social popular ones who usually caused his head to boom. "Hello, young boy. I'm going fine, thank you." Fortunately the class didn't erupt into a chant of 'I'm fine' when the Hufflepuff addressed ALL class.
... oh look. "Don't touch the pile. The instructions on the board are clear." Ab's voice boomed in the silent room, his eyes sternly looking at the boy. Disobeying rules in the first five minutes through school year was definitely not a good impression on your teachers. wait at least a couple of days

After willing his face to go back to its normal softness, Botros nodded at the little girl. "Good morning to you too. Take a seat and don't touch anything but your parchment." His eyes went back to that kid who almost touched the precious things under the cloth. Baddie.

.... okay, so far the naughty boy did not cause a riot of any kind. That was good. "Good mor--" He paused, looking at the apple the girl just left on his desk. His smile was back instantly, it was for him, right? He loved this kid. Not only did she bring food this early in the morning (which meant she was one of those who had breakfast) but she brought a healthy kind of food. Could he go and pat her head? He didn't, seeing as the girl already was seated. "Thank you for the apple." And he took a bite off it to make her happy. It was polite, too.

Ab nodded and smiled back at the girl. "Good morning, I'm doing great, thank you." Oh and she was another Prefect. He was glad the student leaders showed interest in this subject.

Not only Gryffindors, apparently. Botros stared, amused, at the young girl as she yawned and dragged herself through the classroom. "Good day to you, dear. Hopefully you managed to get something into your open mouth this morning." It looked as though it stayed open for too long.

Botros nodded at the boy, "It certainly is." A good day, that is. "Everything is important enough if we look deep enough." He smiled and after a short moment continued to eat the apple from that girl, not moving his eyes off the Hufflepuff boy - which turned to be quite the wise decision.

"[b]I will ask you not to touch that yet, young boy./b]" His voice came just as loud and firm as before. "The instructions are clear." He waved his wand and the writings on the blackboard grew significantly bigger.

The apple was almost gone now, as was his frown and firm face. Just in time to nod and smile at his new student. "Hello my dear. Welcome to my class." He watched her settle into a seat withOUT touching the pile. Good girl.

He nodded at the new Gryffindor. "Good morning, young girl." He waved his wand and made the apple's core disappear before shooting the apple girl another bright smile. He was so proud of her.

He returned the girl's smile and felt the excitement radiate off of her. "Hello, dear." He loved those energetic kids when they knew when to speak and when to stay quiet.

"Good morning and thank you very much." Botros smiled and nodded at the next excited girl walking into his class. This one, though, liked her hair apparently. Girls.

Not an enthusiastic one. No worries, Ab believed he had the remedy for this. "Good morning." The boy better be one of those who had breakfast.

Abraham smiled at the Hufflepuff girl, "Good day to you too, my dear." He lifted himself off the desk and took a few steps forward to face the kids. It was time for class.

After she had watched everyone introduce themselves she realized she'd forgotten to write down her nametag herself. Quickly writing it down and pinning it to her cloak she raised her hand.

Hopefully Professor Botros liked her answer.

"Professor I believe Runes were one of the first written Germanic languages - they came before the Latin alphabet and are used commonly in magic as a divination form." She smiled brightly. "Rune magic came into light more because of a Scandinavian writer's poetic Eda. That being person being the infamous Snorri Sturluson. He wrote all the Scandinavian tales of Thor, Freya and the other gods and goddesses of Norse mythology." Yeah as usual she went DEEP into the history. "It was found in these books that i've been reading over break."

Runes...Runes...The Ravenclaw hoped she would actually pay attention this term then the last couple terms...She was a stickler for not paying attention. Nerida raised her hand and said the most basic answer she knew, "Runes are characters or letters that compose the runic alphabet." Yeah she wasn't going to add anything onto that....

After scribbling his name down, James leaned back against his seat and listened as Professor Botros as he discussed what they were going to be learning in the next few months. Which apparently was the sacred runes of Odin. Fascinating.

When he asked the classes what Runes were, the 5th year's eyebrows knotted in concentration as he tried to recall lessons with his grandfather before raising his hand - and hoping that he recalled the right definition. "Professor, Runes are letters which makes up the runic alphabet and were used by Germanic tribes before they adopted the Latin alphabet." Merlin knows why - runes were so simple looking compared to Latin.

SPOILER!!: Peyton's Parchment

Peyton Baltazar
Third Year

Peyton finished writing down her name on the parchment and placed it at the front of the desk so the man-who-looks-like-her-grandfather could see. She stared at him for a while before shifting her gaze down when he asked for a moment of silence.

It was creepy. Like, the professors dying and stuff. Her dad had told her that in any case of an emergency she was to run like the wind without a backward glance. Then her mother suggested she could use a Hufflepuff as a shield. She wasn't planning on disobeying either one, heh.

After the moment of silence, Peyton attempted to focus on Professor Botros...but she was far too curious about the pile that was covered up. Touch it or not touch it? Meh, she'd wait until someone else did and if they still had their fingers intact then she might poke it. Yep, that was the plan.

With that decided, Peyton turned her full attention on Professor B. Ugh. Runes. Her family looooved them, but she...well, she didn't like school related stuff besides Quidditch. And Runes wasn't an easy subject for her as was Divination and a few other subjects. But, she didn't want to just sit there like a loser.

Peyton raised her hand slowly, looking a bit shy. "They are magical figurines...that work in different ways..?" There. Totally not a bad answer.

Mellow.

Maybe she should have sat down next to a Ravenclaw or that smart kid that spoke for ages.

Positioning himself on the middle of his desk, he leaned on it and waited. "Raise your hand first, please."
After the whole greeting with each student that came by to attend the subject, class finally started. Good, because the faster they start, the earlier they finish. Juliet is quite excited to have an early lunch. She's been having dreams of steak last night. Will they have them today? Oh, she'll be crossing her fingers for that.

Runes... What are runes? What does the word literally mean?

Juliet faced and focus on the professor. Juliet is bad at Ancient Runes and she happily accepts such facts but she loved answering word origins. At least she can answer this. Her hand shot up "Professor, the word rune means secret, mystery, dark mysterious statement" according to the book that she have read. Technically, it was more of skimming through but it's an answer that she remembered. "It's a bunch of old letters that is known as the Runic Alphabet. " like really REALLY old.

It was a relief she was alone, he wasn't going to hear annoying chatter sounds...

... or not, really.

"Raise your hand first, please."

ooc: - You don't have to give a completely correct answer, just let your character reply according to their year/knowledge/personality. ^.^
- Do not edit your answer after you posted it.
- Class will resume in 12 hours.

Harvey listened as he said to observe a moment of silence for their previous professor which he did, she had been kind of a cool professor even if she did have a thing for old people.. maybe she and this professor would have gotten along quite well.. not that he was implying anything of course. Oo they were going to do something different this term? well it sure did soun like it. Runic magic? they had done something like that before.. no? he could be mistaken though. What are runes? mmm "Runes are letters that were used before the latin alphabet as we know it came to be used.. right?" he asked to confirm he was right cause he was not sure himself but it was something along those lines he was sure

It was booooring..Very boring. The professor was talking about runes? Or asking about them. Though it was better than last year as Cassia was able to understand the words. But still it was too early and the Snake could barely get herself to think and even if she did she wouldn't have been able to gather her strength and raise her hand and speak out the answer. And considering she was sitting at the back she needed to fully raise her arm. How much effort would that require, tons!

And the students were answering..so many of them but their voices were like a soothing rhythm for the third year's ears. She was being lolled to sleep. Why couldn't they speak loudly so that she would wake up .And what made it worse was the Professor's old look. He reminded Cassia of her grandmother and naturally that made her sleepy. Of course he was a man but still.

So with all that, the thirteen years old felt her eyelids automatically close. She tried willing them to stay open but they felt very heavy that she failed at that. With her eyes closed and her hand supporting her head the snake sat listening to students murmuring answers.

Aand there they went. Ancient Runes... '...mostly a theoretical one...' Uhh... Sophie's shoulders lowered at the sound of that. boring class was going to be boring. And she already had no idea what professor Botros was talking about.

Though Odin was a fun name!

Since she had absolutely no idea how to respond to his question, the Hufflepuff remained quiet as she looked around, listening to her classmates answers.

Ugh, that sounded so duullllll. She placed her elbows on the desk in front of her and rested her chin on her hands. Sigh.

Okay. Some were not so interested in answering his question or opening their books to find something to say. Botros waited for a moment in case either one of the silent ones had a eureka moment before moving on...

Old guy, wasn't going to ask that was he? Because if he was then all Nessie would do is stare. She had never had much knowledge when it came to this subject at all and she tended to struggle a lot.

Thank goodness Old Guy's question was a little more simple.

For once she could answer in this class. The red head raised her hand and waited her turn."A rune is basically and alphabetic letter, right. Professor?" That's what she remembered it to be.

Professor Botros. Wade let that name sink it to memory... Wait, one of the late professors taught this class?! Well then.. Wade sat up straighter to give his respects in silence... Before the lesson continued.

....When the discussion started Aquila started to twirl one of her curls at the end of her index finger. Runes... she knew only the very basic of this, and that was only because the Priestesses insisted that their ancient text be learned just as they are. She raised her hand as she replied "Uhm... Runes are really really old alphabets from.... the North." Well she's from Wales, everything else about this is just North to her.

Was it too late for her to run out of the classroom before she was sentenced to detention? Natalie was worried that the odds of her pleasing the Ancient Runes professor with that apple were not in her favour. Maybe she should have taken Arithmancy instead. All of her worries went away when the old man thanked her for the apple, though. She excitedly sprung upright in her seat when he took a bite. Aww! What a sweet man he was! Rather than loudly reply from her seat, Natalie simply gave him one of her signature smiles. Gold star for you, Professor Botros!

And then class began after a moment of silence. Natalie couldn’t help but glance around the classroom after the professor mentioned the person whom he had replaced. What happened to the former professor? Making note to look into that later, this girl’s mind went right to work when the class was asked what runes were. She had read a bit about runes before, so she was confident in raising her hand. “Professor, the word rune means ‘secret’ or ‘mystery.’ They are symbols that were used by Germans a very long time ago.”

Listen carefully then, Bliss, she thought to herself and brought her attention back to the Professor. She needed to buckle down if she was going to have any chance of understanding this at all. What were runes? Seemed like...simple enough a question. Good for a simple answer. Even if it was wrong. Bliss raised her hand and waited..."Runes are essentially an ancient alphabet," she said semi-confidently. Right? She was right, right? MELLOW.

She tried to pull her focus back and decided she would have to talk to Ethan after class. Maybe he knows what happened.

She raised her hand like others had already, and though she did not have a new answer, she wanted this new professor to see that she was trying. "Professor Botros, runes are symbols that make up an ancient alphabet and was and can be used for magical purposes." She hoped that was a good enough answer.

Cos that is, like, the definition of Runes since forever.

Good enough, I guess. Oh well.

JAKE!

"Hai!" She whispered excitedly when her Runes Buddy finally arrived. Now she'd be all set if things started giving her a headache or something! Yay!

And she could start writing up her parchment in peace.

Because the house was obviously important.

Sigh.

It had already started. He was talking about complicated things that she didn't know. Well, at least he wasn't doing it with some accent that she couldn't understand. That would have been simply tragic. She sat back in her seat and listened as he went on about runes; what else would they talk about in this class? Oh? And now he was asking what they were. Ahem. She knew this answer. Her hand flew up and she waved it around to grab his attention so he wouldn't be able to say he didn't see her raise it first. "Those are the squibbly stuff that ancient people used to make messages because they didn't know about the alphabet as yet. I think we took it over and started using it for other stuff but I don't know that other stuff..." Just thought she'd put that out there while she was at it.

Now time for class to start, listening she was at least glad she could understand this professor and he did seem nice. Placing her hand up Minerva tried to answer the question at the best of her ability. "Professor, runes is an alphabet that was used before the Latin alphabet was created. It had symbols for each letter." Putting her hand down, Minerva got ready to take any notes she felt needed to be taken.

What are runes? Sort of an easy question. She had heard enough from her father about it to know the basic definition. After raising her hand, she began to say her answer. "Basically, runes are just symbols. They are symbols that represent the different sounds of the Runic alphabet." She could go on about the Elder Futhark, but no, she didn't want to bore herself or her classmates too much on the first day of class.

What was a rune? Ella scrunched up her face and thought and tried to remember what she knew on the subject from previous terms. Well...runes were symbols, yeah? And they were used in a kind of alphabet? ...Seemed legit. Raising her hand, the blonde badger waited for her turn to speak.

"Professor, runes are letters used in an alphabet. And they...well they have meaning associated with them erm...well like sowilo and the sun."

THERE. That was a complete Alice answer. She was pleased.

His parents could yell at him like that but he was not too pleased about his professors yelling that loud at him, he was on his list to be pranked on.

Runes... What are runes? What does the word literally mean?

Juliet faced and focus on the professor. Juliet is bad at Ancient Runes and she happily accepts such facts but she loved answering word origins. At least she can answer this. A bunch, more than half of the class really, knew it was sort of an alphabet. Some went ahead and gave more details, which only made them make more mistakes, but he appreciated the effort and nodded smiling at each and every one of them. "Runes are an alphabetic script, yes. That is correct." However, it's an incomplete answer...

Encore?
Botros had to find him a spot on one of the desks to lean on and listen to the next Slytherin boy - he obviously had a lot to say. Most of what he said was impressive and managed to make Ab's aging insides to move. Like, from affection to all the runic enthusiasm. "That's brilliant. Great job summarizing what you know about runes." He would pat the boy's head too if he wasn't three desks away. Maybe later.

Oh another enthusiastic Ravenclaw. Botros nodded, smiling widely, at the little girl. She had her sources, too, apparently even if she went off the course a bit. "Great answer, too. We'll help you organize your information more." He turned around slowly and headed for his desk again.

Picking his quill up took some time as he silently chuckled under the desk and he had to swallow more laughter down when he finally sat up.

Merlin! He did not know what was so funny but it was just funny. The old man was funny. Hopefully, he managed to keep himself silent as they waited in silence for a moment and....he saw Aurora when she spoke up answering the old man's question. Whaat...what was he doing there in the back row while she was sitting there. Silently but quickly, the Slytherin boy collected his stuff and went to sit next to her.

''Morning, beautiful!'' he whispered in her ear before kissing it. This old man was probably both deaf and blind anyway.

Now to the question.

''Magical old letters'' Fair enough.
MERLIN'S GIDDY AUNT!

Botros stood straighter than he originally was and his voice quickly boomed, "Mister Turner!" This was a big, big mistake in Ab's class. Whispering into his classmate's ear right in the middle of class and causing her face to be as red as Thor's beard. "I'm going to ask you to get your things and come sit on my desk for the remainder of this class." He shot an angry, disappointed look at the fourteen? fifteen? years old boy. He was not going to interrupt his class and draw attention of younger innocent girls to this... whispering. GLARE.

...

Once the Slytherin was seated on his desk, Botros climbed the two steps and went to stand exactly by him on the chair, using the boy's shoulder as a cane. Much more comfortable than the wooden stick.

"Runes, as many of you have already noted, are letters in a family of ancient alphabets known as runic alphabets. They were used as a method of communication across Scandinavia and in other Germanic nations from around the 3rd century CE to around the 13th century, when they were displaced by the Roman alphabet." He dug a bit into the Slytherin's shoulder while turning around to the blackboard and waving his wand to write the main points of the upcoming lecture. "The primary runic alphabet is often known as Futhark, in a reference to its first six letters. The runic alphabet was probably derived from the Etruscan alphabet which was once in wide use in Italy, and it characterized by angular characters, with no curves or soft edges like those found in the Roman alphabet." His face turned to the students, making sure they were writing down notes, and continued, "This is common to alphabets developed during this period, since they can be readily chiseled into stone."

Botros moved away from the boy and the desk, to the side, allowing the kids to see the texts on the blackboard. "The runes were given to humankind by the central God of Norse mythology Odin, who hung himself upside down on the World Tree in a self sacrificing ritual." Did any of them fall asleep yet? Hopefully not. "After nine nights of suffering upon the tree, Odin died and passed on to the realm of the afterlife where he gained wisdom and was then reborn. Odin passed on his newly acquired wisdom to his people in the form of Runes." Pause. "The runes must be considered an instrument given to us by Odin to help us bring order and clarity to our lives." So, no one should be confused.

"Three aspects of the runes are the sound, the shape and the secret knowledge that are associated with the runes. A good rune master is one who has mastered this threefold nature of the runes. " That was related to what the enthusiastic Slytherin boy implied at with his answer. "But this is not something we're going to dwell on too much today." The old man offered a small smile before waving his wand toward the blackboard.

Above the writings appeared a drawing of someone. "Who can tell me who this is?" He stared at the picture along with the students. "What is the tool he's holding called? And why would we discuss them both in this class?" Go.
ooc: - You don't have to give a completely correct answer, just let your character reply according to their year/knowledge/personality.
- Do not edit your answer after you posted it.
-Class will resume in 12 hours (hopefully I'll be on time this time!).

Alyssa studied the picture in front of her before raising her hand. "Professor, that is Odin, the Norse God, and he's holding a hammer in his hand. He is like the first person who saw the runes."

Botros raised his eyebrows at the Hufflepuff, amused. She was a quick one, wasn't she? "No, miss Potter. That's not Odin." He kind of gave them a hint, didn't he? Think a bit harder. Maybe if she paid more attention to his other questions?

Ella's eyes widened quite a bit when suddenly the Professor was asking that weirdo Turner boy to go sit on his desk. MERLIN! That boy had really made a good first impression, huh? Pshhh. That's what he got for being RUDE in class. The blonde shook her head and looked back down at her notes, trying to add other facts she didn't know or remember from previous terms.

OH! A picture! Ella tilted her head to the side before noting the hammer! Was that...that Thor dude? He had a hammer, yeah? Raising her hand, she waited to be called on. "Professor, is that guy Thor? He erm...well I believe he is associated with thunder and lighting." And she gestured towards his helmet. "Oh and he is also known to carry a hammer."

Alyssa mentally berated herself, when Professor Batros immediately corrected her answer. She should have studied the picture again and noticed the wings on the guy's helmet. Plus Odin didn't carry a hammer, he carried a sword.

"My apologies Professor. That is Thor, the Norse God often associated with thunder, lightning, storms, oak trees, strength, the protection of mankind, as well as hallowing, healing and fertility. He is the God often associated with the Rune Thurisaz." Alyssa provided her answer with a blush before slowly sliding down in her chair embarrassed.

Jory wrote down the part of the definition he and most of the class had left out as well as a few more details as Professor Botros spoke. Now, he turned his attention to the picture.

The Puff's first thought was that it was Thor. Well it looked like the superhero with the winged helmet and hammer and all but what did Thor have to do with Runes? Jory raised his hand. "It's Thor and the object is a hammer,'' he said.

As the drawing was uncovered, Jake stared at it until realization dawned on him. "That's Thor!" He exclaimed, his hand shooting up in the air. "He's superhero, a part of the Avengers. From the Marvel comics." A grin now on his face, Jake continued. "His weapon - tool, sorry, tool - is called a Mjölnir... it's supposed to be powerful enough to level mountains. It's a hammer in the comics, but in legend it can also be known as an axe or a club."

BEAM.

...Why were they talking about superheroes in Ancient Runes, though?

"The runes must be considered an instrument given to us by Odin to help us bring order and clarity to our lives." First thing Alec Summers learnt in Ancient Runes in his fourth year: Never ever EVER get on the wrong side of this Runes Man.

The fourth year BLINKED as a Slytherin -- Turner, was it? -- was made to sit at the FRONT. Right near the Professor. GULP. Scary or what? It was like...in primary school where, if you did something bad like take two cartons of free milk, you were sent to sit in the corner in SHAME.

... Oh? HEY! He had gotten his answer right! Or... half right. Awesome. Grinning slightly at his... success, Alec sat back and listened as Botros started talking about... runes and history and Odin and some other boring stuff. Did they have to know all of this? Because... that seemed impossible to the young Hufflepuff right now.

... Wait... runes have nature? O_O

Alec shook his head before... OH! A drawing! And OH OH OH! The Hufflepuff raised his hand because... well... HE KNEW THIS. Sort of. "Oh hey, it's THOR!" ... O_O "I mean... erm... that's Thor, the Norse God. Erm... and... that's his hammer..." You know, the weapon... thing. "Oh... and Professor? Isn't Odin somewhere in this story as well? Something to do with... Thor...?" He knew there was a Blake in the story. GRIN.

Mom says I have no sense of direction, so I packed my bags and right.

Now this is what he loved about Ancient Runes, The Norse myths associated with the runes. Oakey perked up in his seat and began scribbling down the notes as Professor Botros went on about Odin and Yggdrasil, that's right Professor forgot to mention what tree Odin hung himself upside down on. Along with his notes he scribbled a bearded stick figure man tied to a tree upside down on his parchment.
Hmmmm tied to a tree? Maybe he should stop tying Aegis to the one outside their home. No way was he gonna deal with an all powerful 10 year old if he forgot to untie him for 9 days.

"Professor?" Oakey shot his hand up in the air after that small story. "I thought Odin created the runes after he sacrificed his eye for wisdom at Mimir's Well?"

He took one quick look at the image of the man Professor Botros show them. "That's Thor God of Thunder, and son of Odin. The hammer he is carrying is Mjolnir made by the dwarf Brok in a bet with Loki. It was known to level moutains"
Go On Professor Botros, bring on the next question!

Errrrrrr......

"Pretty sure I saw Alec Summers laughing." Theodore muttered. Not trying to get him into trouble or anything. NOPE.... *whistle*

The old guy, whose name he still hadn't registered in his head, started talking and talking and talking, so Theo sorted of blinked himself back awake. It wasn't until he started speaking about Norse Mythology that he woke up a bit.

"That's Thor, and that's Mjölnir." Theodore said with a nod. How it could come into an Ancient Runes class? He'd never really thought about it, but he did know the answer. "And the Mjölnir has a runic scripture on it, in a circle shape I think." He always though of it as.... a funny alphabet, ironically. "I dunno what it means or anything..."
