Before we start I'd like us all to take a moment of silence in honor of the unfortunate professor before me." He bowed his head and clutched the cane with both his hands.
....
One moment was done. He raised his head slowly and continued, "This subject, as you all will see, is mostly a theoretical one which tends to give the wrong impression on most scholars" Tsk tsk tsk, shame. "Together we'll try to take small gradual steps in order to understand the sacred runes of Odin - Runic magic, in particular." They were wizards and witches afterall. So no, they were not about to learn how to write in runes. That was too boring.
He moved to the side and waved his wand at the blackboard, removing the earlier instruction. "Runes of Odin, runic magic, runic inscriptions. I keep repeating the word rune. Who knows what are runes? Or what does the word rune mean literally?" Positioning himself on the middle of his desk, he leaned on it and waited. "Raise your hand first, please."
ooc: - You don't have to give a completely correct answer, just let your character reply according to their year/knowledge/personality. ^.^
- Do not edit your answer after you posted it.
- Class will resume in 12 hours.
A moment of silence? Man. That was hard. Probably the hardest part of the whole class. West twitched but with superhuman effort managed to stay quiet. HOW LONG WAS A MOMENT ANYWAY?
He mentally reenacted the Quidditch game he'd seen with Aurora and Theo. And then he thought a bit about his new guitar and the lessons he was getting from Dylan. And then he decided he was still hungry and got jealous of the professor's apple, and then -- oh the moment was up!
His hand went up.
"Rune comes from the root run- meaning 'secret' or 'whisper'." Which was a bit weird right? Secrets and whispers were hardly the same thing.
"In Old Norse, run means 'mystery.'" Which made more sense to West since really, runes totally WERE mysterious. Mysterious and AWESOME.
"In old Irish and Scotch Gaelic, run means 'secret' or 'mysterium,' and so does rhin in Middle Welsh." Was it clear that this was a topic dear to his heart?
"The root run- can also be found in the Baltic languages meaning 'speech', and if we're talking about the Elder Futhark runes --cos there's lots of different kinds of runes, they're magical symbols and they represent like, a real cool story of.... of like.... life, the universe, and everything." West's arms spread wide, theatrical emphasis, and he nearly knocked Theo in the face.
"They're a writing system and all that for sure," He waved a dismissive hand at some people who had said that. Boring answers. True but boring,
"But they're also SOUNDS and POSTURES and INCANTATIONS they're basically magic without wands." He nodded excitedly, all big eyes.
"They're for communication, divination and invocation, one of my books says that, professor." And he was spent. West slumped back in his seat as if he'd just put on a long and epic performance.
Encore?
