And the students were answering..so many of them but their voices were like a soothing rhythm for the third year's ears. She was being lolled to sleep. Why couldn't they speak loudly so that she would wake up .And what made it worse was the Professor's old look. He reminded Cassia of her grandmother and naturally that made her sleepy. Of course he was a man but still.

So with all that, the thirteen years old felt her eyelids automatically close. She tried willing them to stay open but they felt very heavy that she failed at that. With her eyes closed and her hand supporting her head the snake sat listening to students murmuring answers.

Biting her lip to suppress a chuckle - how rude of her, that's true, but she couldn't help it, that sound couldn't have come in a more inappropriate moment and that was so Oakey. In a cute way, obviously. That was good, because moments of silence seemed to last longer than they were supposed to, most of times.

Aand there they went. Ancient Runes... '...mostly a theoretical one...' Uhh... Sophie's shoulders lowered at the sound of that. boring class was going to be boring. And she already had no idea what professor Botros was talking about.

Though Odin was a fun name!

Since she had absolutely no idea how to respond to his question, the Hufflepuff remained quiet as she looked around, listening to her classmates answers.

Ugh, that sounded so duullllll. She placed her elbows on the desk in front of her and rested her chin on her hands. Sigh.

Okay. Some were not so interested in answering his question or opening their books to find something to say. Botros waited for a moment in case either one of the silent ones had a eureka moment before moving on...

Old guy, wasn't going to ask that was he? Because if he was then all Nessie would do is stare. She had never had much knowledge when it came to this subject at all and she tended to struggle a lot.

Thank goodness Old Guy's question was a little more simple.

For once she could answer in this class. The red head raised her hand and waited her turn."A rune is basically and alphabetic letter, right. Professor?" That's what she remembered it to be.

Now he wanted to know what Runes were. Belle only had a faint idea of what they were. She never really studied this subject so much before. Belle raised her hand, "Professor Runes are roman symbols of the roman alphabet." That is all she knew so far. She wanted to learn more about them.

BLINK.

Well... that was awesome! A bit... unexpected but awesome. Good on you, Botros. ... BLINK AGAIN. What in the name of Superman's super senses were Odin Runes? They weren't... something they had to now already, right? Because Alec knew as much about those as he did about dancing. ... Which... was next to nothing.

So... the question. What were Runes? Alec furrowed his eyebrows in concentration, his eyes wandering towards a pile near someone else's desk. Runes... runes... runes... OH. "Professor?" he asked, raising his hand tentatively, "Erm... well... when someone says 'runes', to me that means that... erm... well, they're a set of symbols that represent an old language? Like a sort of ancient alphabet?"

As Messer walked toward his seat, he could feel like he's being watched by the Professor. Or probably its just his feeling so he just shrugged it off.

Runes? What are runes?

The fourth year raised his hand before he speak "Runes are alphabets which were used by people before we have Latin alphabet." Basically its an ancient alphabets. Insert imaginary nod here.

Professor Botros. Wade let that name sink it to memory... Wait, one of the late professors taught this class?! Well then.. Wade sat up straighter to give his respects in silence... Before the lesson continued.

Runes, runes, runes.. they sound like lovely gems to Wade. Given the different names of runes, and well.. the Professor said they were going to learn how to understand them.. that kind of thinking led Wade to raise his hand, "Sounds like runes are some sort of code.. like a language."

Yeah adding that house in because she was so thrilled to actually be sorted in the house where she made her first friends purely on accident (or foresight who knows...)

She angled her head inquisitively before bowing it in their moment of silence. This much she understood, the solemnity of respecting those who passed away. What she didnt understand was that there seemed to have been a Professor that died prior to this one.

O_____O

What like a heart attack? Disease? Or like....*gulp* killed?

....When the discussion started Aquila started to twirl one of her curls at the end of her index finger. Runes... she knew only the very basic of this, and that was only because the Priestesses insisted that their ancient text be learned just as they are. She raised her hand as she replied "Uhm... Runes are really really old alphabets from.... the North." Well she's from Wales, everything else about this is just North to her.

His smile was back instantly, it was for him, right? He loved this kid. Not only did she bring food this early in the morning (which meant she was one of those who had breakfast) but she brought a healthy kind of food. Could he go and pat her head? He didn't, seeing as the girl already was seated. "Thank you for the apple." And he took a bite off it to make her happy. It was polite, too.

"Good morning everyone and welcome to your first Ancient Runes class this term." Botros started, giving looks to those not paying attention to him. The piles were obviously too intriguing for young people. "I'm Abraham Botros, your new Runes professor. Before we start I'd like us all to take a moment of silence in honor of the unfortunate professor before me." He bowed his head and clutched the cane with both his hands.

....

One moment was done. He raised his head slowly and continued, "This subject, as you all will see, is mostly a theoretical one which tends to give the wrong impression on most scholars" Tsk tsk tsk, shame. "Together we'll try to take small gradual steps in order to understand the sacred runes of Odin - Runic magic, in particular." They were wizards and witches afterall. So no, they were not about to learn how to write in runes. That was too boring.

He moved to the side and waved his wand at the blackboard, removing the earlier instruction. "Runes of Odin, runic magic, runic inscriptions. I keep repeating the word rune. Who knows what are runes? Or what does the word rune mean literally?" Positioning himself on the middle of his desk, he leaned on it and waited. "Raise your hand first, please."
Was it too late for her to run out of the classroom before she was sentenced to detention? Natalie was worried that the odds of her pleasing the Ancient Runes professor with that apple were not in her favour. Maybe she should have taken Arithmancy instead. All of her worries went away when the old man thanked her for the apple, though. She excitedly sprung upright in her seat when he took a bite. Aww! What a sweet man he was! Rather than loudly reply from her seat, Natalie simply gave him one of her signature smiles. Gold star for you, Professor Botros!

And then class began after a moment of silence. Natalie couldn’t help but glance around the classroom after the professor mentioned the person whom he had replaced. What happened to the former professor? Making note to look into that later, this girl’s mind went right to work when the class was asked what runes were. She had read a bit about runes before, so she was confident in raising her hand. “Professor, the word rune means ‘secret’ or ‘mystery.’ They are symbols that were used by Germans a very long time ago.”

Hopefully..

Listen carefully then, Bliss, she thought to herself and brought her attention back to the Professor. She needed to buckle down if she was going to have any chance of understanding this at all. What were runes? Seemed like...simple enough a question. Good for a simple answer. Even if it was wrong. Bliss raised her hand and waited..."Runes are essentially an ancient alphabet," she said semi-confidently. Right? She was right, right? MELLOW.

She tried to pull her focus back and decided she would have to talk to Ethan after class. Maybe he knows what happened.

She raised her hand like others had already, and though she did not have a new answer, she wanted this new professor to see that she was trying. "Professor Botros, runes are symbols that make up an ancient alphabet and was and can be used for magical purposes." She hoped that was a good enough answer.

Cos that is, like, the definition of Runes since forever.

Good enough, I guess. Oh well.

And she could start writing up her parchment in peace.

Because the house was obviously important.

Sigh.

It had already started. He was talking about complicated things that she didn't know. Well, at least he wasn't doing it with some accent that she couldn't understand. That would have been simply tragic. She sat back in her seat and listened as he went on about runes; what else would they talk about in this class? Oh? And now he was asking what they were. Ahem. She knew this answer. Her hand flew up and she waved it around to grab his attention so he wouldn't be able to say he didn't see her raise it first. "Those are the squibbly stuff that ancient people used to make messages because they didn't know about the alphabet as yet. I think we took it over and started using it for other stuff but I don't know that other stuff..." Just thought she'd put that out there while she was at it.

What are runes? Sort of an easy question. She had heard enough from her father about it to know the basic definition. After raising her hand, she began to say her answer. "Basically, runes are just symbols. They are symbols that represent the different sounds of the Runic alphabet." She could go on about the Elder Futhark, but no, she didn't want to bore herself or her classmates too much on the first day of class.

It was creepy. Like, the professors dying and stuff. Her dad had told her that in any case of an emergency she was to run like the wind without a backward glance. Then her mother suggested she could use a Hufflepuff as a shield. She wasn't planning on disobeying either one, heh.

After the moment of silence, Peyton attempted to focus on Professor Botros...but she was far too curious about the pile that was covered up. Touch it or not touch it? Meh, she'd wait until someone else did and if they still had their fingers intact then she might poke it. Yep, that was the plan.

With that decided, Peyton turned her full attention on Professor B. Ugh. Runes. Her family looooved them, but she...well, she didn't like school related stuff besides Quidditch. And Runes wasn't an easy subject for her as was Divination and a few other subjects. But, she didn't want to just sit there like a loser.

Peyton raised her hand slowly, looking a bit shy. "They are magical figurines...that work in different ways..?" There. Totally not a bad answer.

Mellow.

Maybe she should have sat down next to a Ravenclaw or that smart kid that spoke for ages.

...and this guy was pretty old, wasn't he? He wasn't going to drop dead on them or anything, was he? ...because that had happened before. Twice.

BEAM.

So, the most basic question was being asked first...What are runes? Hmph. It seemed everyone was eager to answer and had...So, what could he offer? He hadn't really heard what answers had been provided....So many people were speaking at once. Merlin...

Raising, his hand as was instructed, the Slytherin grinned. "It's a mark of mysterious or magic significance..."

... now those gave more related answer. "Mentioning their magical properties is important since it's one of the significant reasons Ancient Runes is taught to young witches and wizards." Still, some answers were partially incorrect. He would correct them in a bit.

"A funny alphabet."

His hand dropped slowly back to the table. Yup... that was two years worth of Ancient Runes RIGHT THERE.
Botros gave the boy a steady look. "I'm not sure what you mean by 'funny', but I don't see any of your classmates laughing their heads off yet." Because runes were not funny. They were pretty serious business. The boy would see in a minute. Still, he'd get points for having the guts to make fun of them.

Of course, they weren't even old enough to know the alphabet properly and so.....yeah." Elodie grinned then, and set her hand back down, leaning her head into it.

..... Why was no one else giving the same answer?!?!?!

BRAISON?!?!?!?!!!

Oh dear.
He was amused the Hufflepuff girl felt the need to mention her source. Botros was sure though that her brother was not taught runes by him, because this horrible version of Odin's story (if she even was referring to Odin) was way off. "Nice story, I think I have to meet your brother if he's going to continue help you with your study." Smiling and patting the girl's shoulder as he passed by. Again. The real story will be told in a minute.

Leaning slightly on his cane, Botros continued to walk between desks avoiding the piles until another Hufflepuff raised her hand. "That'd be a cross between Ancient Runes and Arithmancy I believe." He joked, not really though. "No, though. Not maths. But good effort."

Daichi looked at the Professor with a slight frown on his face. He wondered why the man hadn't called him by his name when he remembered that he never truly introduced himself.

Well... At least the old man's eyes were still good cause he had seen him wearing a badge. Anyways, on to the question!

Despite that Ancient Runes was probably Daichi's worst subject ever, he wasn't that dumb that he didn't know the basics....

The Slytherin raised his arm in the air and waved his hand to get the old man's attention. "Professor Bo..."what was his name again?!.... Bomos? ...bofos?

"Botox!" yeah that sounded about right~ "Rune means letter or script but it can also mean secret" why? He had no idea!
Uhh.... "Botros." He told the boy gently. His answer was acceptable, too.

After his classmates had answered, Mo's hand shot up in the air, and he wiggled around in his seat for a moment. "So... so like it's an alphabet, right? Which means that it spells words and people used to use it to write, only no one speaks in those languages anymore, so you'd think it would be a dead language like Latin. Except that, like Latin, we still make use of Runes to do really awesome things. But not just swapping letter for letter, because it wasn't like those ol' Rune-speaking people used English spelling or anything. But you can use runes for Divination and like... charms and things." FYI.
Ab smiled and nodded at the brilliant boy. A Ravenclaw, why wasn't this surprising? "Good thinking, young boy. And correct answer."

He mentally reenacted the Quidditch game he'd seen with Aurora and Theo. And then he thought a bit about his new guitar and the lessons he was getting from Dylan. And then he decided he was still hungry and got jealous of the professor's apple, and then -- oh the moment was up!

His hand went up. "Rune comes from the root run- meaning 'secret' or 'whisper'." Which was a bit weird right? Secrets and whispers were hardly the same thing. "In Old Norse, run means 'mystery.'" Which made more sense to West since really, runes totally WERE mysterious. Mysterious and AWESOME. "In old Irish and Scotch Gaelic, run means 'secret' or 'mysterium,' and so does rhin in Middle Welsh." Was it clear that this was a topic dear to his heart?

"The root run- can also be found in the Baltic languages meaning 'speech', and if we're talking about the Elder Futhark runes --cos there's lots of different kinds of runes, they're magical symbols and they represent like, a real cool story of.... of like.... life, the universe, and everything." West's arms spread wide, theatrical emphasis, and he nearly knocked Theo in the face.

"They're a writing system and all that for sure," He waved a dismissive hand at some people who had said that. Boring answers. True but boring, "But they're also SOUNDS and POSTURES and INCANTATIONS they're basically magic without wands." He nodded excitedly, all big eyes. "They're for communication, divination and invocation, one of my books says that, professor." And he was spent. West slumped back in his seat as if he'd just put on a long and epic performance.

Encore?
Botros had to find him a spot on one of the desks to lean on and listen to the next Slytherin boy - he obviously had a lot to say. Most of what he said was impressive and managed to make Ab's aging insides to move. Like, from affection to all the runic enthusiasm. "That's brilliant. Great job summarizing what you know about runes." He would pat the boy's head too if he wasn't three desks away. Maybe later.

Hopefully Professor Botros liked her answer.

"Professor I believe Runes were one of the first written Germanic languages - they came before the Latin alphabet and are used commonly in magic as a divination form." She smiled brightly. "Rune magic came into light more because of a Scandinavian writer's poetic Eda. That being person being the infamous Snorri Sturluson. He wrote all the Scandinavian tales of Thor, Freya and the other gods and goddesses of Norse mythology." Yeah as usual she went DEEP into the history. "It was found in these books that i've been reading over break."
Oh another enthusiastic Ravenclaw. Botros nodded, smiling widely, at the little girl. She had her sources, too, apparently even if she went off the course a bit. "Great answer, too. We'll help you organize your information more." He turned around slowly and headed for his desk again.

A slight snort escaped him though then he pretended to drop his quill to the floor so he could laugh a bit under the desk. Picking his quill up took some time as he silently chuckled under the desk and he had to swallow more laughter down when he finally sat up.

Merlin! He did not know what was so funny but it was just funny. The old man was funny. Hopefully, he managed to keep himself silent as they waited in silence for a moment and....he saw Aurora when she spoke up answering the old man's question. Whaat...what was he doing there in the back row while she was sitting there. Silently but quickly, the Slytherin boy collected his stuff and went to sit next to her.

''Morning, beautiful!'' he whispered in her ear before kissing it. This old man was probably both deaf and blind anyway.

Now to the question.

''Magical old letters'' Fair enough.
MERLIN'S GIDDY AUNT!

Botros stood straighter than he originally was and his voice quickly boomed, "Mister Turner!" This was a big, big mistake in Ab's class. Whispering into his classmate's ear right in the middle of class and causing her face to be as red as Thor's beard. "I'm going to ask you to get your things and come sit on my desk for the remainder of this class." He shot an angry, disappointed look at the fourteen? fifteen? years old boy. He was not going to interrupt his class and draw attention of younger innocent girls to this... whispering. GLARE.

...

Once the Slytherin was seated on his desk, Botros climbed the two steps and went to stand exactly by him on the chair, using the boy's shoulder as a cane. Much more comfortable than the wooden stick.

"Runes, as many of you have already noted, are letters in a family of ancient alphabets known as runic alphabets. They were used as a method of communication across Scandinavia and in other Germanic nations from around the 3rd century CE to around the 13th century, when they were displaced by the Roman alphabet." He dug a bit into the Slytherin's shoulder while turning around to the blackboard and waving his wand to write the main points of the upcoming lecture. "The primary runic alphabet is often known as Futhark, in a reference to its first six letters. The runic alphabet was probably derived from the Etruscan alphabet which was once in wide use in Italy, and it characterized by angular characters, with no curves or soft edges like those found in the Roman alphabet." His face turned to the students, making sure they were writing down notes, and continued, "This is common to alphabets developed during this period, since they can be readily chiseled into stone."

Botros moved away from the boy and the desk, to the side, allowing the kids to see the texts on the blackboard. "The runes were given to humankind by the central God of Norse mythology Odin, who hung himself upside down on the World Tree in a self sacrificing ritual." Did any of them fall asleep yet? Hopefully not. "After nine nights of suffering upon the tree, Odin died and passed on to the realm of the afterlife where he gained wisdom and was then reborn. Odin passed on his newly acquired wisdom to his people in the form of Runes." Pause. "The runes must be considered an instrument given to us by Odin to help us bring order and clarity to our lives." So, no one should be confused.

"Three aspects of the runes are the sound, the shape and the secret knowledge that are associated with the runes. A good rune master is one who has mastered this threefold nature of the runes. " That was related to what the enthusiastic Slytherin boy implied at with his answer. "But this is not something we're going to dwell on too much today." The old man offered a small smile before waving his wand toward the blackboard.

Above the writings appeared a drawing of someone. "Who can tell me who this is?" He stared at the picture along with the students. "What is the tool he's holding called? And why would we discuss them both in this class?" Go.

- Do not edit your answer after you posted it.
-Class will resume in 12 hours (hopefully I'll be on time this time!).
