Default Arithmancy One: Introduction to Spell Numerization & Basic Curse-Breaking

The room was breezy, which wouldn't have been terribly strange for the November day except that the windows closed. Having just finished rearranging the desks for about the fifth time that morning, Professor Hadley settled on having the desks pushed together in pairs.

Resting her backside against her own desk, she was flipping through the latest copy of Numbers and You as she waited the arrival of the students.

Penny tried to smile, she thought that maybe she might have to see the nurse for a headache cure, because her head was still banging - "Would you like to bring it up to her when she asks for it?."

"Volunteers. Heck! yes I will,"Alyssa thought to herself. "She most likely has cast a spell on it, nothing is that easy." But Alyssa raised her hand to volunteer.

"I will, Professor."

Alyssa thought to herself, "Worse thing that could happen is that I don't open it but someone else does, and hopefully they'll share it with us."
Penny thought that Alyssa was brave for volunteering to open a suspicious box, just hoping that whatever was in there wasn't loud and smelly - because Penny wasn't sure she could stand that at the minute.

Asked her to Isobel.
"That sounds right," Isobel said. Was she sure she was not a Ravenclaw? She had the potential to be one, judging form this class. Then Professor Hadley started talking and Isobel looked to the front of the room. "I think both zeros do matter," she said, turning her head toward Raven. "But I'm not sure how." Okay, time to focus.

"I'll volunteer," Isobel said, raising her hand. She had no idea how to open that box, but she wanted to earn points. Yeah, that was her only reason.

Chocolat Hazelnuts?!? Those were Jesifur's favorite. She raised her hand. She had no idea how to open the box but she would try for chocolate!

*ahem*

''Yeaa, we are''
Of course, they were clever and of course the placement of the first zero was important. Because he had said so. Hehehehehe.

Whatever...

Next, looking down at the empty parchment he was expecting her to start writing yet...huh? Him write it? Did not understand a thing he said? But...but...he did not like writing. He did not even take notes during classes. And she was the one who was sitting. Yet, though he shot her a 'yeah-really?!' look, he took in a deep breath and held his tongue. Because the Hufflepuff was a lady.

''Fine.'' Taking the quill from her hand, he pulled the parchment toward himself.

SPOILER!!: Nessie and Josh's Parchment

080 - The first zero should be taken as base because the number is 080 not 800. There's a lack of financial support or monotony in business which might change, mosly likely, in a negative way.

28 -

Okay. 28. ''Yeah. Might be. So, unlike the other, we can say this is a good sign for material wealth. Not too good, though. Y'know what i mean. Because it says harmony. It will go along the way in a satisfied way and won't change direction.''

Aaaaaaaaand next?

''Did that make sense to you? And if it did, what about 52?''

So the lion thought it was okay to stare at her. Nessie wasn't going to let him. She put her arms on her hips and stared back untill she had to answer him. "Nope, its just..oh nevermind" she said not wanting to irritate him.

Not feeling bad at all she continued to sit in the Lion's place. It wasn't like you needed to sit while writing. She could see he didn't want to write, but it wasn't her fault she couldn't write something she didn't understand. "Wanna sit?" she asked not wanting to be such a meanie.

She looked at the partchment making sure it was neat, or at least legibal. She read over what he wrote and finally understood what he said.

"I sorta got that...do you want me to try write 28?" she asked feeling just a tweeny bit bad for the lion.

Next number, 52. "So 52 is Change, freedom and progressive thinking that I think would have something to do with relationships and unity?" This Arithmancy wasn't as bad as it looked.

Stopping everything she was doing Ness listened to the Professor. Josh was right the zero's in the number 080 were very important and so were their places.

There was something in Profesor Hadley's hand, but what in the world was it. Nessie tried to get a closer look at the object on the Professor's desk but before she could try figure what it was the Professor spoke. It was a box with Hazelnut chocolate. Her stomach grumbled at the thought of getting to eat chocolate. "I'll Volounteer" she said smiling widely at the Professor.

She couldn't help the small laugh that escaped her as Hadley pointed out that the box she was pointing to, was indeed...a box. However, that laugh disappeared as soon as it started once it was said what exactly was IN the box. REALLY....? Why?

Sighing in annoyance, the girl somewhat rolled her eyes as she slouched in her seat. Chocolate. If the Professors had to bring something sweet in the lesson, couldn't they use licorice wands or fizzing whizbees or something? Why was it always chocolate?

Evelyn definitely didn't volunteer for this one.

Wait. Brilliant? Wow! A compliment Adanna wasn't certain she was worthy of, especially since she was pretty average minded compared to her Ravenclaw heritage. Her curls bounced about as she shook her head and responded "Not in the least!" Although, she was thankful he hadn't thought of her a babbling fool. That must be a good thing, right?

She looked up at the blackboard and started to recite what was written. "Well, two is harmony, unity..." She stopped. How'd she be able to remember these? Having a better idea, she said "Excuse me shortly, I'll go get my book."
Adanna stood quickly and hurried over to her desk. After gathering her textbook, parchment, and quill, she sat back down by Daichi. "Here," she said, flipping her book open to chapter three, "here's the list. Much easier to see than the blackboard, and quicker to refer to."
She quickly copied the list from Daichi's parchment to her own. "So, twenty-eight. I suppose harmony and fluidity could go hand-in-hand.. but that's my only idea. What would you suggest?"

Daichi watched as Adanna excused herself and went to grab her own things. He continued to watch as she flipped the book open to chapter three and he chuckled. Couldn't they have used his book? But that didn't matter now as the girl was already writing his notes on her own parchment.

He read in the textbook and bit his lower lip as she spoke about number two and eight going hand in hand. "Eh..right" he scratched the back of his neck and thought that Adanna knew what she was doing because the more Daichi looked at the numbers the more he got confused.

......Chocolate.......did he just hear chocolate?!

Daichi looked at the Professor when she was talking again. His eyes showed no desire in finding out the answer to that..number but instead his mind only heard the word Chocolate... Unconciously, he licked his lips and his arm shot in the air without him realising it. "I WANT TO VOLUNTEER!" He shouted, louder than he had wanted and too much excited and he literally bounced in his seat trying to get his arm up the highest as possible. "sorry, Professor!" he quickly apologised but his arm didn't lower.

Simon was sure that would get Professor Hadleys attention, she seemed to be ignore him and he didn't like it. "Oh and it means that you can be one of my best friends when I take over the world."

Simon then listened to the Professor and smiled, he could open up the box no problems, but he didn't want any chocolate, all someone had to do to open the box was use there wands, surely a blast from the wand and the box would open.

Eww. Hazelnut chocolates. Sierra didn't care about the food. She wanted the pride and possible extra house points that came along with opening that box. She didn't dare make a move yet, though. What if she got up there and couldn't open it? She sat back in her chair and stared at the box.

Just then, she heard Hollingberry speak up, and Sierra inwardly rolled her eyes. Of course Hollingberry just had to volunteer. Hmm... Blah. Sierra raised her hand. "I'll give it a go," she said.

"Yes, the two zeroes in 080 are there for a purpose." Which they'll see soon enough. "A couple things important to remember is that movement may also be associated with the number 8, which some of you noted by jotting down fluidity or success....The number two, I forgot to mention, is related to humans and human magic as well, which makes sense considering it also represents relationships and harmony."

"Now, I have here in this box..." She pointed to, but did not touch, the box that now sat on her desk. "Some very fine Hazelnut Chocolates are inside. Whoever thinks they can open this box - and succeeds - the chocolates are yours. Can I get a brave volunteer, possible a few, willing to try opening it?"
"Do we open with magic or just come up and try to open it? I will try if you like!"

Victoria looked thoughtfully at the numbers. The one meanings beginning, but 9 means the end. "What about, an independent person who likes to be in charge and very powerful...which would mean he's most likely to become the Ministry of Magic!" said Victoria excitedly. "But has a very short life."
Nate shook his head slightly. "I see where you're coming from, but these don't all relate to humans. Only 2 directly does. 19 could mean.... the beginning of the end..." Nate said, honestly unsure of how to interpret so many different meanings.

Nope, Tori didn't want to open the box, cuz she didn't like chocolate. She raised a brow as Sierra volunteered, though, and slid down in her seat with a smirk, arms folded.

Good. Hopefully she burned her hand trying to get to the chocolates. CANDY THIEF.

Well, it could blow up, probably. But at least that would be cool?

"I will, Professor."

Alyssa thought to herself, "Worse thing that could happen is that I don't open it but someone else does, and hopefully they'll share it with us."

19- Combine the descriptions of both one and nine (One= beginning, leadership, independence, etc./ Nine= endings and change, independent and being a leader to bring about change and to teach)

28- Combine the descriptions of both two and eight. (Two= harmony, unity, relationships, collaboration, duality, humans/human magic/ Eight= authority, finances, business, success, material wealth, self-mastery, complex thought/reasoning, fluidity).

37- Combine the descriptions of both three and seven.

Before she could write down any more her Professor spoke up and asked if she would take any volunteers to open a box. Ever since her incident last year with the boggart Selina was not very trusting of these situations. Her face palled a little at the memory and she tried her hardest not to show that internally she was a little frantic at the thought. So she kept her hands on her lap and timidly responded, "I'll volunteer." She needed to show she was participating. Hopefully, she would not get picked on.

FREE CHOCOLATE!

Just then, she heard Hollingberry speak up, and Sierra inwardly rolled her eyes. Of course Hollingberry just had to volunteer. Hmm... Blah. Sierra raised her hand. "I'll give it a go," she said.

"Alright, let's see how Prefect Hollingberry does with this... You'll all have your turn though." Maybe not on the main box or even in front of the class, but they'd have their chance.

Now turning to the fourth year, Fina smiled encouragingly. "Go on then. You'll probably want to use your wand too," Hadley hinted and then leaned in to whisper something else, "... oh and probably not a good to touch the box either."

Kurumi stood up and walked to the front of the room when Professor Hadley instructed her to do so. Slowly, she leaned over the box and examined it when the professor spoke again. Her wand? Kurumi removed it from its turquoise holster and immediately began thinking about what spell she could cast to open it...when Professor Hadley spoke once again in a low whisper.

Right...no touching the box. Got it...

Kurumi held her wand over the box, wondering just what all she was supposed to do when she remembered what the entire class was on: double number meanings. That had to have something to do with this, right? Kurumi thought a bit more, still holding her wand above the box. Professor Hadley had just placed special emphasis on two numbers: 2 and 8.

...human magic...success...movement...

Kurumi wasn't sure if it would work, or even if she was thinking along the right lines, but it was worth a shot, right?

In the air, Kurumi traced the number 2 first, representing herself as a human and human magic, followed by the number 8 for success and movement. Hopefully...this movement meant that the box would open...

Kurumi waited to see what would happen.

Josephina held her breath, wondering for a moment if maybe she messed up whilst preparing the box. Watching as the Prefect traced the number 28 in the air, she smiled in mysterious satisfaction. At least the girl hadn't tried Alohamora. Though with Alohomora, she knew what would happen. With tracing a number?

Well it wasn't a spell that the prefect did.

So nothing. Nothing at all happened.

"Nice effort! Very unique and creative indeed." Fina complimented. "Anyone else have any different ideas for how to maybe open the box? If so... come on up and give it a try..."

Cael took a deep breath and walked up to the box. The Professor had said he needed to use his wand, but obviously a simple unlocking charm wasn't what she was looking for. This was Arithmancy after all, not charms.

Erm, how to go about this? Cael thought 79 seemed like a decent number. He figured the box must be sealed with magic and since 7 meant magic and 9 meant ending, it seemed that 'ending magic' would be a good place to start.

The Professor had said not to touch the box so... with a standard swish and flick he shouted, "79!" at the box.

He felt silly, but at least he'd tried.

Ira watched as Kurumi tried to open the box. She traced something in the air like some number...Ira didn't get it. But the professor praised her effort.
Now Ira felt that it was her turn to try. Whats wrong with trying at least? Unlocking spell would be too easy. There must be some other way. She supposed she could just break the box into two-three parts.
So, she walked to the front in front of the box and took deep breath to calm herself.
Then, "Diffindo" and waited with trepidation...

There's some good in this world and it's worth fighting for| LOTR|Whovian|Sherlock Fan

Alyssa watched as first the Prefect Kurumi could open the box. If the box could be opened, she was the best person who would be able to do it. But she had failed

"Darn it!! That goes our best chance of getting free Hazelnut chocolates!!,"Alyssa thought to herself. "I knew that the Professor had done something to it. We know that we need our wand to get it open. Hmmm...I wonder what could it be.

Alyssa stepped up to the box and thought. "I could use the Cistem Aperio spell, which Sirius has used many of times to open boxes which were sealed closed or I could do something else. The Professor keeps mentioning the double zeroes. I wonder is that the solution. A zero means great transformational change."

Alyssa took out her wand and pointed it at the box. Waving the wand (movement to signify the number 8) and drawing 2 circles around the box to signify the 2 zeroes she said, "OPEN!!

She grinned over at the Professor. "For free Hazelnut Chocolates, it's worth a try".

Harvey went up in front of the class really nervous. He turned around to see all the his classmates eyes on him, he gave a small smile and turned back to the box in question. He had seen Kurumi trace a number on it and decided to do the same, remembering what the professor said about the numbers before, he then traced....

zero....eight....zero.....two over the box and then "Alohamora!" he said pointing at the box, and then he waited to see if it worked.

Jesifur was nervous and watched her classmates try and open the box. When it was her turn she stepped up to the box and drew her wand. First she took her wand and tapped the lid twice, to represent she was a human and wanted to collaborate with the box. Next she took her wand and traced the number five on top of the lid, suggesting to the box that Jesifur wanted to change it, to free the chocolates. Lastly she traced the number eight on the top indicating she had the authority to open such a box. She stood back to see what would happen, and hoped she was right. She could practically taste those chocolates.

Then, Raven walked into the classroom. She took her wand then tried to opened the box. First, she thought about 18 number, which meaned begining and success, so she combined it as begin to success. She tapped her wand to one of the boxes and said

"18"

at least, she tried it.

Watching as another student stepped up to the plate in attempt to open the box, Fina watched as he too tried tracing a number. But what was different was he added a swish and flick, followed by shouting the number.

Curious. She thought something would happen. But as he didn't do a spell, for 79 was not a spell, nothing happened. Again.

Another student made an effort, although this one tried a spell. None had tried the unlocking spell just yet, but the splitting spell. That one was unique and she had to give the girl credit. Almost as if the box was deciding on if it would react, the box hesitated and then the spell seemed to rebound with a freezing charm sent back to the girl.

"Oh no worries!" Hadley exclaimed. "She'll be okay." In about 30 seconds.

Open? Did the girl think this was Muggle Magic? Needless to say, Fina felt oddly amused and comforted by the bluntness the girl had attempted to open the box.

And needless to say, since 'open' wasn't a spell, nothing happened.

zero....eight....zero.....two over the box and then "Alohamora!" he said pointing at the box, and then he waited to see if it worked.

Ah. Finally someone had been so brave as to attempt the spell she thought they would try at first; the classic unlocking spell. But alas, as had happened with the Gryffindor girl, the box rebounded the spell in the form of a freezing charm. Good that the box still worked.

"Oh dear. He will be okay though." Less than a minute; no need to panic folks!

The moment the girl's wand seemed to touch the lid of the box, there was a reaction, which seemed to initiate that freezing charm of the Hufflepuff. Clearly, even touching the lid with the appropriate numbers wasn't good enough.

But again, it was only a temporary freezing charm.

And now, Hadley guessed, it was time to move on with more teaching. "This here," Fina pointed at the box. "Is an example of a cursed object. For anyone who has interest in becoming a curse breaker, this lesson here will introduce you to some of the more basics involved." But if they chose to further their studies in curse breaking, they would learn much more in-depth about the subject. "Many curses are designed to react to certain spells. But there are two questions that remain; how to identify what curse an object has and how do you break or bypass the object's curse?"

"Alohomora or diffindo, as you saw, caused a reaction from the curse on this box. While tracing the numbers in the air was a very good idea, there's an easier way to figure out what curse has been placed on this box." And from there, they can figure out using number characteristics, what it means. "The spell on this box is actually rather simple and straight-forward, but you will never see it in real cursed objects. It's a form of impedimenta designed just for educating."

Pausing to let this sink in, she decided to demonstrate it on herself. "Now then, just so you can see what I'm talking about..." Fina flicked her wand and cast 'Alohamora', only to be hit with the freezing spell as three students before her had been. But after a few moments, she awoke. "Alright then, now I think it's time to figure out exactly how we can decipher what spell is on a cursed object." Bringing her and down, then up, and finally flicking it, she said "Arithmos Revelio". Then, a large number in orange appeared to float above the box:
2808052749
"This number here is the numerical representation of the spell impedimenta specificalis hominum. Everything we need to know about the spell and how it works is contained ... in this number." Of course. Because it really was all in the numbers! "Notice any particularly interesting groupings in the number?"
