Arithmancy One: Introduction to Spell Numerization & Basic Curse-Breaking
The room was breezy, which wouldn't have been terribly strange for the November day except that the windows closed. Having just finished rearranging the desks for about the fifth time that morning, Professor Hadley settled on having the desks pushed together in pairs.
Resting her backside against her own desk, she was flipping through the latest copy of Numbers and You as she waited the arrival of the students.

Louisa was staring down at her own parchment, waiting for Luna or the other girl to find out the numbers' meanings as well. She scribbled, crossed out and scribbled again.
Three means Trinity, Union of Divine plus Human, Manifestation, Positive, Negative and Neutral, Expression, Subconscious Mind/Imagination, Creative, Optimistic, Enthusiasm, Expressive, Charming, Humor, Fun, Attractive, Friendly.
While seven means Philosopher, sage, wisdom seeker, reserved, inventor, stoic, contemplative, aloof, deep-thinker, introspective, spiritual, faith, esoteric, exotic, unusual, hidden, seeking perfection, ethereal, other worldly, enigma.
Combining them would be... spiritual expression, attractive enigma, or even optimistic seeking of perfection.
Next number was 25. Five implied to Adventure, change, freedom, exploration, variety, sensuality, unattached, curious, experienced, periodicity, knowledge seeker, knowledge teacher, traveler, imagination, child-like, playful. Two meant Duality, Division, Polarity, Choice, Gestation, Cooperation, Service, Harmony, Support, Waiting, Diplomacy, Patience, Psychic, Intuition, Adaptable, Empathic, Partnership, Mediator, Comparison, Receptive, Helper, Collecting, Reproduction, Balancer of Opposites, Subconscious Memory, Positive and Negative.
So twenty five could be... seeker of the balance between positives and negatives or unattached comparison.
The last number took even longer than the previous ones. Louisa stared down at the double zeros and thought that they should have some kind of double effect on the meaning. Right?
Limitless, Unity, Nothingness, Boundless, Truth, Purity, Love, All, Alpha and Omega, Possibility, First Cause, Unmanifest, Breath of God, Unified Field, Source, Space, Consciousness, Cosmic Egg, God were the properties of zero. Number eight had achievement, abundance, executive, strength, self-disciplined, power, success, authority, psychology, entrepreneur, intensity, supervisor, provider, grandeur, material manifestor.
080 = limitless strength of God....?
The girl wrote her results down and looked up at her partners to see what they'd done so far. Maybe they could share the results and discuss them?
SPOILER!!: Louisa's Parchment
Double Digits Number Meaning:
19: Short-lived independence / the beginning of the ending. 28: Harmony between authority and self-mastery. 37: Spiritual expression, attractive enigma, or even optimistic seeking of perfection. 25: Seeker of the balance between positives and negatives or unattached comparison. 080: Limitless strength of God.
Luna stared at her pearchment looking at how much she had so far she had no idea what 080 was?
Quote:
19. Begining of the end / Leadership
28 Success
37 Creative expression
52 Freedom
She turned to Louisa and Gwen ''What do you have so far?'' she asked
as she looked threw her parchment again... Ughh why did Arithmancy have to be so complecated well she didn't really have to focus on hers much she knew known of them were right well she was pretty sure 19 was Beginning of the end
Stopping for a moment and blinking at the girl, Josh considered the idea for a moment and when it sounded reasonable to him, he gave her a little smile and nodded. ''Riiight'' It was very much a normal thing to do to bring parchment and quill to the class, indeed. Then as she sat down on his place, the Gryffindor eyed the numbers. ''Yes, i am fine. Do i look sick or something?''
Yup. It looked like she agreed that the 080 was interesting. What she was saying was exactly what he meant so he nodded again. ''Indeed. Well...i believe Professor Hadley wanted to put something tricky there. However...'' he looked at her face and grinned ''...she must have tried harder, i believe, as this is not trickly for our team at all.'' Hehehehehe. Winking at the Hufflepuff girl, he went on ''Yes. There must be a double effect of zeros but i think it is also important to give more importance to the placement of the first zero as the number is 080, not 800.''
Good point huh?
''So, i believe we should take this first zero as the base and combine it with the other two numbers. Well...conbining the base zero, which means nothing/emptyness, with eight; we can assume there is already this lack of material weath or no change in business. And if we combine it with the last zero, we can say this situation will change as there's a change meaning in zero too. I don't want to be too quick to judge if that change of situation would be negative or positive yet seeing the words decay and nothing,i believe it is most likely to be negative.''
Hmmm...did that make sense?
''Write this down if it sounded reasonable and meanwhile we can think of this 28. Must be easier.''
What was so confusing about what she had said, it was normal to bring quil and partchment. Nessie smiled back and decided to ignore his blonde moment. "No, its just your acting too kind" she looked at him hoping he wouldn't react the way she was expecting him to. Trying to make her statement seem unimportant she looked in her book focusing on the numbers.
The lion was right about Hadley. She was probably trying to make things difficult, but she didn't agree that Professor Hadley should have made it more difficult Ness thought it was hard as it was. The only reason why it wasn't so tricky was becuase the lion must have been experienced in this sort of thing. "We're just too clever." She giggled at his wink and then winked back. Now back to concentrating on the numbers. "Yeah the place's of the zero's look very important." This was something she wouldn't have figured out on her own, it was a good thing she had this Gryffindor lion.
"What?" He was really confusing hear, she barely understood a word he said. She looked at her quil and then at her parchment, she wasn't writing anything unless she could understand what she was writing. "How about you write, Cleverness" she said handing him the quill and partchment. "I didn't understand a thing you just said, but it still sounds right."
Okay number 28. Nessie read the meanings of the numbers two and eight. "Okay so I think 28 would be a harmony or unity related to bussiness, success, finance and so on."

"But there's one thing I just now noticed. Did you see how Professor Hadley wrote 080? She didn't just write down 80. She added a zero in front. I don't think that she made a mistake and wrote that down like that. I bet she wants to see whether anyone noticed it. I wonder by adding the 0 in front of the 8 does that changes our definition? I keep seeing that Alpha and Omega characteristic. I wonder whether the meaning is still the same with the extra zero in front, the definition could be altered to mean in order for one to achieve one's goal, one has to prepared to end another. The beginning of one's dreams and the start of another? What do you think, Penny?" Alyssa asked her partner.
Penny realised that Alyssa was right, she had totally ignored the first zero, consulting her textbook again, Penny corrected their mistake.
SPOILER!!: Interpretations
19 = Leadership and ambition, coupled with global awareness, compassion and generosity makes for a very philantrophic person with leadership qualities.
28 = could mean that you could have power, strength and authority but also lending Diplomacy, understanding and empathy and providing support to those around them
37 = it means that it order for one to find their creative and spiritual inner self in the wizarding world, one needs to be interconnected with life, nature and mankind’s place in the universe.
52 = could mean that in order to be creative and imaginative in whatever one is doing, with a desire to learn and be adventuress, one needs to be patient and adaptable to possible changes that might crop up. One should also not just be satisfied with one solution, but should always strive to experiment and explore more possibilities. Possible career would maybe be teaching.
080 = order for one to achieve one's goal, one has to prepared to end another. The beginning of one's dreams and the start of another, it could also mean that the possibilities of achieving one’s goal is limitless. One just has to have the self-discipline and the inner strength to achieve it.

Harvey listened to Minnie's suggestions
"Yep that sounds right, I also thought that 52 could mean Change and Transition show progressive thinking, Harmony and Unity in relationships, it could also mean that you are resourceful and also are versatile
080 could mean that first you start of with nothing no business, no wealth just emptiness. Then you start a business, you have the authority. Your business turns into an organization, it is a success, you handle the finances. But then the business takes a change for the worst it declines or decays, it is not what it used to be, and soon you end up where you started, you have nothing just emptiness."
Harvey smiled "It feels good to work together, you had some really good ideas." He smiled again.
Harvey wrote these onto his parchment being careful to include ALL of Minnie's suggestions.

"Yes that's a very good narrative, Penny. I guess we're done. All we need to do is present this to Professor Hadley when she asks for our answers." Alyssa told Penny, satisfied that even if Professor Hadley told them their assumptions were inaccurate, they had at least tried and that was more important.

There was always other times for actually just talking. She'd smiled yet again as he agreed with her analysis of the second number on the list, though. "That could also be a good analysis," she agreed, noting that on her page along with her own, similar to what she'd done with 19.
But then it seemed the best idea was to keep things moving, move on to the next number on the list. 37. Okay, she thought, glancing back at the descriptions and trying to formulate something that made sense. "Perhaps 37 refers to the need for wisdom to balance out imagination. That magic does exist, but it needs to be controlled by knowledge." That certainly made sense when it came to thinking about why they were all here at Hogwarts, so perhaps that was the reason Professor Hadley had included it in their assignment. At least, that made sense to her.
It seemed they were moving on which was a good thing so they would be ready when Professor Hadley called for their attention again to move on with the class. Gideon had to admit it had proved to be a bit easier then he would have thought under other circumstances. Hearing the next number being described by Stella, he realized he might have spoken too soon since he guessed her answer made sense. For him however, he looked over the descriptions and couldn't come up with an idea of his own.
"Sounds good to me," he answered agreeing to her choice and picking up his quill wrote it down with his notes. "Can't come up with anything myself," Gideon added in case she wondered why he didn't add anything like the other two.

To make it up to her, Gideon looked over the next number to try and see if he could think on something for that one to trade off. 52....52, he mused as he looked over the list and then back up at his partner as he came up with something. "For 52 it could be the change and versatilty needed within relationships."

''Should i have been rude?'' and just where did this Hufflepuff girl get the impression that he was rude? Hmph! She was so lucky that now half of his mind was busy with Arithmancy stuff because he simply liked this stuff otherwise he would have shown her the truth with the best way possible.
*ahem*
''Yeaa, we are'' Of course, they were clever and of course the placement of the first zero was important. Because he had said so. Hehehehehe.
Whatever...
Next, looking down at the empty parchment he was expecting her to start writing yet...huh? Him write it? Did not understand a thing he said? But...but...he did not like writing. He did not even take notes during classes. And she was the one who was sitting. Yet, though he shot her a 'yeah-really?!' look, he took in a deep breath and held his tongue. Because the Hufflepuff was a lady.
''Fine.'' Taking the quill from her hand, he pulled the parchment toward himself.
SPOILER!!: Nessie and Josh's Parchment
080 - The first zero should be taken as base because the number is 080 not 800. There's a lack of financial support or monotony in business which might change, mosly likely, in a negative way.
28 -
Okay. 28. ''Yeah. Might be. So, unlike the other, we can say this is a good sign for material wealth. Not too good, though. Y'know what i mean. Because it says harmony. It will go along the way in a satisfied way and won't change direction.''
Aaaaaaaaand next?
''Did that make sense to you? And if it did, what about 52?''

Stella simply nodded as Gideon accepted her analysis of the number 37, not really sure what else she could say. Obviously, it felt odd knowing that they were just going with her theory, and he hadn't had anything to add, but in the same respect, they were under a time limit. As she had a feeling Professor Hadley would want to move the lesson along soon. Therefore, if he didn't have anything to add, going with her theory was what they'd need to do, so she added it to her notes.

He'd moved on to trying to figure out an analysis for the next number on the list, and she glanced at her notes as she decided if it made sense or if she had anything else to add. "Or maybe it's saying something like that one needs to accept change and that freedom is necessary for true relationships to work?," she replied, a bit questioningly. It was something she was starting to believe in, but the fact she could bring that to a simple number analysis was a bit weird. So maybe it would make more sense to go with the simplicity of what Gideon had decided.

"That's awesome," Isobel said. "I'm going to hug you." Raven probably had no idea what she was talking about, because she hadn't been there last year for NHASD. She pretended she had not said that and hopefully the subject would change back to Arithmancy.
"So maybe it would mean you were successful in authority, but you were harmonious, so you gave everyone a fair change." That was her thoughts on that. What was the next number?
It wasn't long before Rory was approached by one boy and then one girl, both of whom seemed willing enough to work with him. Phew! He was worried he would have to work alone, thinking that his loud announcement was much too bothersome for other people. But apparently, people were alright with it so...
"Sure! We can all work together on this! By the way, I'm Rory!" he said, excited. Rory scanned down the page in his notebook until he reached the second line under his list. "Okay. Nineteen. That means we have to combine the descriptions of one and nine, right?" Rory looked back one page as he pointed to both one and nine, only to find that these numbers were practically opposites. "That's weird. One basically means beginning, leadership, independence, all that stuff. It makes sense because one...individual, yeah?" His face slid down to the description about nine. "But nine is pretty much all about endings and change...so, maybe nineteen is all about being independent and being a leader to bring about change and to teach people about stuff?" He looked at the other two feeling so unbelievably confused that he hoped they would somehow agree with him or help him out in someway.

"Well, let's see here. The next number would be... 28?" he asked skimming down the list. "So to go with what you were saying we should combine the traits. How about this, 2 is harmony, unity, relationships, collaboration, duality, humans/human magic and 8 is authority, finances, business, success, material wealth, self-mastery, complex thought/reasoning, fluidity."
Hmm. "So maybe it could be like a number that influences your skill and success in handling relationships with others?"
Selina nodded to the two boys and then took her place in a seat next to Rory. She was starting to take out a piece of parchment when the two boys started to riddle off their answers to the first two numbers and its interpretations. She started to mutter under her breath, "Holy Hippogriff, slow down." The more they talked the faster she wrote until she had a piece of sloppy parchment sprawled out in front of herself.

28- Combine the descriptions of both two and eight. (Two= harmony, unity, relationships, collaboration, duality, humans/human magic/ Eight= authority, finances, business, success, material wealth, self-mastery, complex thought/reasoning, fluidity).
Then Selina slammed her quill down on her desk and said, "Okay! I wrote that all down. Which one is next?" She let out a deep breath, they were going super fast.

Rory watched as the girl scribbled down what they were saying, only to realize that it wasn't quite right. As soon as he spotted her mistake, he made an effort to correct it.
"No, no, no! This all wrong! You can't just write 'Combine the descriptions'! You have to explain the combination. Here, let ME do it." Rory pulled out a bit a parchment and grabbed the girl's pen. "This how you do it..."

Ah! Perfect and not at all sloppy like that girl's writing which is utterly horrendous and completely unacceptable. In fact, he could barely read the writing on the other piece of parchment as he eyes gazed upon it. "Anyway, the next number is thirty-seven! Anyone got an idea?" Rory looked at the list of descriptions. "I think we ought to keep to his theory," he pointed at the boy, "So...three is all about imagination and pretty much having this weird free spirit thing going on. Seven is pretty much about intellect and wisdom. Meaning you're a wise person with a wide imagination? Which allows you to think bigger and out of the box!" Rory shouted out the last part in pure excitement, feeling much more comfortable with these numbers and descriptions. Come to think of it, it was becoming so much fun!

Josephina had been walking around the classroom as the students seemed to be jotting notes down. Noticing partners correcting each other on things like the double zero in the last number assigned, she had to give a smile of approval. There was a reason for the two zeroes, even if it didn't really mean much for this small task. This was just to get them used to number characteristics for two-digit numbers.
"You all seem to be picking this up quite well." Fina commented, as she walked around the other side of her desk. Opening the desk drawer, she took a few moments to build up some anticipation. And see how they all handle the next part of the lesson.
Handling it very carefully, with her back to the class, she muttered something non-verbally and then turned back around to address the class on numerical characteristics that they've just done.
"Yes, the two zeroes in 080 are there for a purpose." Which they'll see soon enough. "A couple things important to remember is that movement may also be associated with the number 8, which some of you noted by jotting down fluidity or success....The number two, I forgot to mention, is related to humans and human magic as well, which makes sense considering it also represents relationships and harmony."
"Now, I have here in this box..." She pointed to, but did not touch, the box that now sat on her desk. "Some very fine Hazelnut Chocolates are inside. Whoever thinks they can open this box - and succeeds - the chocolates are yours. Can I get a brave volunteer, possible a few, willing to try opening it?"

Nora STARED at the box.
Just stared.
She was about to volunteer, but then thought that there might be something going on. Why did the volunteer have to be brave? Although it sounded tempting, to get a box full of chocolate, Nora remained silent and looked around to see if anyone would volunteer.

"So maybe it would mean you were successful in authority, but you were harmonious, so you gave everyone a fair change." That was her thoughts on that. What was the next number?
She was a REAL Hufflepuff. Kindhearted.
"I agree." said Raven. Then she noticed to the board.
"The next is 37, 52, and 080. So 37 first. 3 is for Imagination, positivism, playfulness, creative expression, house elves/house elf magic, complex thought and 7 is for Analysis, research, solitude, wisdom, spiritual focus, investigative, mysticism, magic. So.. It can be the combination between Imagination and Magic.
The next is 52. 5 is for Change, transition, progressive thinking, resourceful, freedom, versatility, physical world, physical touch and 2 is for Harmony, unity, relationships, collaboration, duality, humans/human magic. So, I can said it is the combination between freedom in unity?
but I was confused with 080, does we need to ignore the first Zero??" Asked her to Isobel.

Harvey put up his hand "er... I will volunteer" said Harvey hesitantly not knowing what he was volunteering for.
Ira was surprised that the professor needed someone brave to open a box of chocolates...Sure Ira liked chocolates, no wait, loved them! But she was too suspicious, not knowing what to expect. Should she volunteer?
Anyways, the box had to be opened by some charms, right? Maybe she would learn something from Gryff prefect who had just now volunteered..
"I'll volunteer, professor." Ira said.
Ashley jotted down a few more notes, just to have a sense of completion, making special note of the fact that the last number was weird on purpose. He knew it!
Then he turned his attention back to the professor... and the box. A box that someone had to be brave to come try and open?
Also, what did the box have to do with numbers? Did it have a numbers code? He was curious, but didn't know if he would like to try and deal with that. Still, she'd asked for a few volunteers... so he raised his hand. What was the worst that could happen?
Well, it could blow up, probably. But at least that would be cool?
"I'll try it..." he said, trying not to sound uncertain about it.

Alyssa knew that there was a reason why Professor Hadley had written an extra 0 in front of the 80; She noted down what the Professor said regarding the number 8 and 2. Then she saw that the Professor bring out a box which she said contained Hazelnut Chocolates!!. Chocolates?? Yum! Yum!!
"Volunteers. Heck! yes I will,"Alyssa thought to herself. "She most likely has cast a spell on it, nothing is that easy." But Alyssa raised her hand to volunteer.
"I will, Professor."
Alyssa thought to herself, "Worse thing that could happen is that I don't open it but someone else does, and hopefully they'll share it with us."
Sitting besides Kurumi, Orr glanced at the box on the professor's desk. It had to be locked with some mechanism and she didn't think that it would be too dangerous now would it?
Besides Kurumi had just volunteered and she had been in this class before...her mind made up, Orr raised her hand and said, "I'll volunteer".
SPOILER!!: Parchment
19- Combine the descriptions of both one and nine (One= beginning, leadership, independence, etc./ Nine= endings and change, independent and being a leader to bring about change and to teach)
"Erm, I think that'd be... 37?" he trailed off checking the instructions again. Yep, 37. Cael stifled a huge yawn. Arithmancy was fun, but this activity was quickly becoming draining...

Cael's hand immediately shot up. "Ooo, ooo! Professor, I'll try it!"

Amethyst saw how many people had volunteered and chuckled. She thought it would be less volunteers, but she was highly mistaken. Hmm. Hazelnut chocolates. Sarah would greatly appreciate those! She raised her hand anyway, but didn't have a clue as to what she was getting herself into. "I'll v-volunteer.."

Selina made sure that she kept up with the two boys. When Rory mentioned thirty-seven she wrote it down as quickly as possible. The parchment wasn't even close to done yet, but at least they were moving along pretty fast.

Before she could write down any more her Professor spoke up and asked if she would take any volunteers to open a box. Ever since her incident last year with the boggart Selina was not very trusting of these situations. Her face palled a little at the memory and she tried her hardest not to show that internally she was a little frantic at the thought. So she kept her hands on her lap and timidly responded, "I'll volunteer." She needed to show she was participating. Hopefully, she would not get picked on.
