Alex tried her third nail holding it steady before lightly tapping it a few times. One..two..three..four..five..six..seven..eight, nine.....ten. Finally the nail was in perfectly to. Alex beamed happily.
The REAL Sorting Hat: "Ravenclaw!" This monkey is bananas.
William calmly listened to the rest of the questions and answers, having no clue what that last box thing was. It was a good thing others knew though for he jotted down his answers in his notebook with his pen. He loved this pen he thought, with its dark blue ink that stayed in the holder without spilling. These Muggles were brilliant he mused as he finished writing and looked up, listening to professor Lawson as he instructed them on how to properly put in a nail with a hammer. The fun part was beginning he thought looking around sheepishly as he expected a few sore fingers after this was over.
Standing up he walked over to the box with wood in it and picked up a piece, taking a hammer and a few ails - just in case he broke a few. When Lawson meant gently he meant gently, but William didn't know his own strength half the time and so he found himself carefully walking back to his seat and sitting down, placing the piece of wood on the table. They had to do this the Muggle way? It would be so much easier to just use his wand to tap it in he thought. But no, he wanted to build this car toy for Sienna and he was bound to try it the weird way.
Picking up the hammer in his dominate - left hand - he held it loosely looking at it. He had to use the flat heavy part to hammer it in right, not the rounded pointy edge. Okay, no problem he thought. Picking up the long nail he looked at it, seeing it shimmer in the light of the room. Placing the pointy end on the wood he took a breath and held the hammer - the thick heavy part - to the end of the nail and nodded. He could do this. Raising the hammer over his head, well not exactly but close enough he brought it down gently, the sound of metal hitting metal making him cringe.
Tap.
Well he'd hit it, that's for sure he thought and he didn't hit himself either! He could do this he thought a slight smile on his face as he brought it up again, this time with a little more force. Tap. Again he'd hit the nail on the head so to speak and it looked like it was breaking through the wood. Another few gentle taps and he'd be able to bang it in the rest of the way. Lifting it over his head he held his breath as he brought it down, his face full of concentration and...
Bang!
Right on the side of his hand. "Ouch." he muttered, taking his hand off and waving it around in front of him blowing on it. Oh man that hurt! Like seriously stung by a bee hurt! Cringing again he shook it off, he was a man after all and the tears in his eyes? Yeah that was just him being foolish. Lifting the nail up, he placed it in the small hole he'd made before he hurt his hand and continued, this time going more gentle than before.
Tap. Tap. Tap.
Three more gentle taps and it was in enough for him to baby his hand as he looked down at his work. Holding the hammer in a more firmer grip he breathed in, ignoring the pain from his slightly swelling hand and began pounding the nail into the wood, "Tap tap tap goes the ant ant ant" he sang to himself as he tapped the nail, watching as it went in further and further until finally only the head remained. He'd done it and it only cost him a slightly sore hand.

Arya's eyes never left the hammer as Lawson tossed it ito the air, watching it spin and land in his hand. SHE wanted to do that as well, cause it looked cool and all. But she wasn't up for gaining any injuries while in the class and decided against it.
Watching Lawson demonstrate how to use a hammer, she drummed her fingers on the table impatiently, ready to have a go at it herself. When they were finally able to hammer on thier own, she skipped over and retrieved her wood, bringing it back to her table and placing it on her desk.
Picking up the nail, she placed it on the wood and held it steady. Then she picked up her hammer and......nothin. It was cutting with the knife all over again. She just didn't want to harm her fingers. So instead she just held the hammer with one hand, while using the other to twist the nail into the wood. Atempting to get the nail to stand on its own so she could remove her hand and hammer it.

Selena sighed. She supposed she should try it a few more times to make sure she hadn't just been lucky. She picked up the hammer again. She picked up another nail and held it to the wood. Steady, steady... She was about to pound it in when she dropped the hammer. It dropped onto the floor with a loud thunk. Selena's face flushed red as she picked it up. It was loud...
Selena decided to try again. She held the hammer to the nail again. One... two... three. Bang. Uhhhh. She had missed the nail completely. On the brighter side... she broke the piece of wood. That was good right? She sighed before taking another piece of wood and a nail. One... two... three. Oooh. The nail went in... again. Yay~
Looking up at the students he gave them a serious look. "Now I ask that you all don't go stupid and try and belt the living crap out of the nail because let me tell you if you miss the nail and hit your hand...it hurts." And yes he was speaking from experience. He had lost count at how many times he had hit his thumb.

THEY WERE STARTIIIIIIIIIIING!
As soon as Mr Lawson had finished, she was one of the first to hop off her desk and run back to get the piece of board and nail. Returning with the items, Miranda grabbed the hammer firmly with her right hand and was totally excited to beat the nail into submission. Mwahahaha!
She placed the piece of wood at the center of the desk, took the nail between her left hand index finger and thumb. Her eyes widened and she got a slight crazy look before she aimed, brought the hammer downwards and bopped the nail - making the tip penetrate the wood and it was SO 'standing on its own'. HeHEheHeHEEE!
Doned!
BANG!
Aaaaand then she started bashing the crap out of the nail, totally making it crooked. But she kept hammering, denting the piece of wood and a bit of the desk in the process due to her thrashing, until the crooked nail was wedged in the wood...in a horizontal position. The opposite of how it was supposed to be.
Bang! BANG BANG!
She was making quite a noise, but she didn't care. Merlin this feels good! Beating the crap out of a defenseless nail and wood. Huzzah!
Hah! This might be better than chopping that wood Mr Masterson had 'denied' her to get her frustration out. Hehe.
BANG!!
She repeated this one more time. A new nail, equally as crooked and wrong as the first.

"Okay none of you do that. I've been practicing that for weeks and let me tell ya it hurts when you don't do it right." Basically he had just wanted to show off some.
"Alright in the large container at the back of the room you will find some off cuts of wood, I want you to use those to practice hammering in your nails. Now before you run off and get your wood I want you to watch how it is done."
He placed a piece of wood onto his desk and then picked up a nail. "Firstly hold your hammer by the handle with your dominant hand. With your other hand place the nail, pointy end resting on the wood. Hold the nail near the base like this. Then gently and I mean gently tap the head of the nail with your hammer until it penetrates the wood by at least a centimeter and the nail can stand on its own."
Lawson gave the nail a couple of taps until the nail was reasonably embedded in the wood. "Then take away your hand and hit the nail with the hammer a little harder until it has completely gone in and the head is flat against the wood." He removed his hand and hit the nail with three good hard hits and the nail was in.

"Also this is muggle studies and we are here to do things muggle style so before any of you ask...no you can't use magic to protect yourself. It's all about using common sense." At that last comment he heaved a deep sigh, there were a few students lacking in that department.
"Alright off you go. If you need a hand just give me a yell."

Awww no magic? That was the part about muggle studies that always made Celandine pout. She was GOOD at magic, it was like, her thing and stuff. Pouting slightly over that she picked up the hammer and hefted it. It was kind of heavy but she could judge the point of balance well enough that she was so sure she could do that spinny thing. Not that she was stupid enough to attempt it without some kind of magical protection. She made a mental note to try it some other time and picked up the nail. She examined that for a while too. she'd seen bigger ones before in the dungeons at home, mostly in the walls or on the wooden beams in there.
She collected her piece of wood and rolled up her sleeves. Sure she was wearing clothes that wouldn't catch and stuff but she wanted to be sure. Besides, her father always rolled up his sleeves when he was about to use tools similarish to this, though not for putting holes in wood. She picked up her nail and held it gently upright, the hammer she picked up with her left hand which was her dominant hand and she was surprised at how heavy it was with just one hand holding it. Her hand waved around a bit and she found it hard to move it so that the flat part of the hammer was resting on the nail.
She gave Lawson a glance and then looked down at her hammer and nail and gently knocked at it a few times, pausing in between to make sure the nail was straight and all. After a bit, when it was in enough to stand up, Celandine removed her hand and held onto the wood instead. She lowered herself a bit so she could see the nail on a better angle to judge it and then she swung at it and.... missed completely, a small hammer shaped dent in the wood showed how hard she'd struck it.
Good thing her hand hadn't been there.
Cela tried again and this time made contact with the nail perfectly, driving it in a few centimetres. She glanced around the class, seeing several students knock their nail crooked and have to tug it out again and she decided to be careful not to make that mistake. She turned back to her workstation and tapped the hammer twice more against the nail, driving it down further. One more tap should do it, Cela figured. The fourth tap was the one and she knocked the nail in, though there was yet another dent, perfectly surrounding the nail head, again to show how much pressure she'd put on the poor bit of wood.
She moved to pick the piece of wood up and....
... it was stuck to the desk.
Err what?

After listening to and watching the Professor as he demonstrated the correct technique and amount of power used on the nail, the Head Boy headed to the back of the classroom with the rest of the students to retrieve a block of wood and other supplies. Returning back to his table, Chris placed the wood safely in the center of the table away from the edges and reached for the nail and hammer. 'Ok dominant hand was his wand hand.' the seventh year repeated in his head, juuuuust to make sure.
Using his left hand to hold the nail point to the wood's surface, he lifted the head of the hammer from the nail and tapped it down softly. o.O Nothing happened. Greeeeat.
Maybe he should hit it harder? He raised the hammer again and hit the nail with a bit more force. It sunk into the surface of the wood some. Excited now that he was actually doing it, Chris hit the nail again and it went in further! Letting go of the nail, the Head Boy saw that it was able to stand on its own now. Finally after two hard hits the nail was all the way into the wood.
Alex grabbed her fourth nail and held in like the others..speaking off which she needed to pull out the first. She tapped the hammer gently against the nail getting rougher with it every time, this time it only took six hits before sinking in. She then turned the hammer around and used the other side to remove her crooked nail, which she realised was pretty dangerous deciding to be very gentle when wiggling it out of the wood. Finally that nail was out. Man it had been really stuck inside of the wood.
The practical fun was about to begin!
Walking to the box at the rear of the class room, Patroclus selected a nice, thick wide piece of off cut lumber to whack with a hammer.....nail into. Patroclus searched his brain, to find something he was angry about, because armed with a hammer he was sure he could beat his anger away, but alas he was rather content with life at the moment. Hmm.
Returning to his desk Patroclus lifted his hammer, in his hand the wooden handle felt worn, small nicks and chunks were missing from repeated use. He didn't mind the feeling at all, it made the hammer feel more powerful, like that it had survived many hammering jobs, many whacks, bangs, and pows!
Placing the offcut on his work bench, he used his empty hand to put his safety googles on his face, he didn't want any riccochetting pieces of wood or nail fly into his eyes, no sir.
The nail looked like a small silver muggle pencil, and to check it wasn't he tried to write his name on the offcut, but found no ink to come out. The nail did however make a large scratch in the grain of the wood. Placing the nail between his fingers like the Professor had demonstrated he gave its head the slightest tap. The pointy end sunk into the wood the tiniest bit. Now came the time to whack it all in. He raised the Hammer up to about the height of his face, and then went to smack the head again, but in a moment of fear, in the last second before contact, he let go of the nail. The heavy end of the hammer whacked the nail, but instead of sinking the rest of it into the wood, all Patroclus' hammer did was bend the nail.
"Oh." he muttered looking around for the answer of what to do next, to rectify the situation. He was unsure whether to pull the nail out wit his teeth, or to use another nail. Hmmmmmmmm..... "Professor?"

She can only get in the wood so far then it won't move another inch down. Sidney usually ends up bending the nail in two or worse, but this is Muggle Studies Class. Like it or not, she got to give it her best shot, then she can go to the hospital wing in defeat.
Sidney gets up and goes the back of the room. She picks out a piece of wood first. After examing about a dozen pieces, Sidney thinks she's found one that looks soft, sounds soft, and she hopes will love having a nail driven into it. Sid walks back to her desk and sits down. She decides she'd better put her safety google on just in case. You never know when a nail might fly out of your hands. Sidney selects a nail. Hello nail. My name's Sidney. I don't plan on hurting you, but just in case I want to tell you how sorry I am for damaging you in advance. She then puts picks the hammer up with her right hand. Sidney places the nail in the center of the board holding it in place with her left hand. She consentrates in the nail and visualizes in her mind hammer it in the wood. It works for performing magic. Why not hammering nails too? Sid takes a deep breath and lower the hammer down on the nail. The hammer hits the nail with a loud crash. Remarkable the nail goes into the wood. After two more swings the nail stands on its own. Now comes the hard part. Hammering it in the rest of the way. Sidney tries to copy what Professor Lawson did and use three swings. The first one seems to be okay. The nail seems to be still standing upright anyway. I'm not really sure if it move further into the wood or not. Sidney's second try isn't so good. The nail starts to bend to the right just a little bit. Then Sidney really give it a hard swing. That did it. The nail now is bent perfectly to the right side. It's still only about a third of the way in the wood. Sidney looks down at her pitiful nail in defeat. Don't muggles use something similar to a permanet sticking charm? I think they call it wood glue. U-u-u-g-g-g-h-h-h... Glue... I'd probably permanently stick myself to the bird house. Face it Sid. You stink as a do it yourselfer.
Walking around the room and watching each students progress, Lawson paused by a couple of tables. "The reason your nail is bending is because you are either trying to hit it too hard." He looked at Patroclus as he said this. "Or you are not hitting the nail straight."
He gave Sidney and Patroclus a questioning look, "Do you need a hand?"

He then looked at Ellie, "You are correct also but they usually only use a nail gun on larger jobs and as you said they need electricity and that is something we don't have here at Hogwarts."

"MIRANDA! MIRANDA" he called out as he made his way over to the Hufflepuff who was hell bent on putting that nail not only through the piece of wood but the table and the floor by the looks of it.
"MIRAAAAAAAANDA!" he ended up yelling as he stood in front of her work table. "For the love of Merlin, didn't I just tell the whole class not to belt the crap out of their nail? You are lucky your hand wasn't in the way."

Alex voted sitting back down blushing after picking up the hammer.

Mina jumped slightly as her heard Professor Lawson scream, dropping the hammer in her hand on the table. It hit the table with a thud. Quickly, she picked it back up and attempted to pound the nail into the piece of wood. She wanted to at least get that done before they moved on. She did hate to fall behind.

Sitting up straight, and looking around, Evelyn couldn't help but think this class was crazy and dangerous. There was that one girl who was trying to break the table in half by the looks of it, Lufoy was dropping her hammer everywhere, and apparently someone's wood board somehow was stuck to the table...
And the fact people were hitting their hands with hammers...
Well, actually no. She enjoyed watching that happen, but at least she wasn't the one banging her hand with the hammer. Eesh. Whatever motivated the Professor to have a class full of these tools, he must be even crazier then before! "I'm ready to move on." she mumbled, staring down at her own wood piece and one nail having been hammered into it. It didn't look all that bad. Just slightly, if any, bent to the side. No matter! The next one would be perfect!
"I will give it another try."
With Professor Lawson's words of advice, Patroclus picked up the hammer again. With his other hand he grasped the nail, its tip just touching the wood. With a few light taps, he imbedded the point into the wood. So far so good, he thought to himself.
Promising to himself that his time he would not move his guiding hand, he gave the nail a hit with the hammer. It suck a little more into the wood. Again his hit it making sure to hit it center to avoid any more bends. One last whack and the nail was completely buried in the wood, only its flat top was visible.
Smiling to himself and the Professor, he said, "I did it Sir!" he was ready to move on.
Blechhhh... Rae didn't even know the professor even knew her name! No one remembered her name..... Well not before this year anyways, and she didn't even see him this year until now. Rae's face turned a bit pink but she looked down at the table so her hair would cover her face for a moment. She grabbed the parchment and stuck it in her pocket. That's a bit embarrassing, she even remembered who was in the class that she knew. Rae could now look forward to hearing about this from Destiny and Evelyn if they heard. She remembered Gold telling her to stay clear away from Xylon the last time they spoke. Hmm yes, perfect. Instead of making herself more embarrassed by trying to do some strange muggle stuff, she watched the others and pretended she was observing before trying..... Hopefully class would get out before she had to do anything.

Sidney can't believe Professor Lawson yelled at Miranda. I don't think I've ever heard him yell like that even at Jake. Sidney sheepishly raises her hand and calls Professor Lawson over. "Sir, I seem to be having a problem with my nails. I can get them started and then they don't want to go in the wood." Sidney shows him her piece of wood. "I sort of bent it instead." Sidney cuts her eyes downward. She hopes she doesn't get yelled at too.

Noir nearly jumped form her seat when she heard Professor Lawson yelled at one of the student.."I hope she's okay..I never heard Professor yelling like that before" she said..
"Well..I think I'm ready to move into the next stage.." she mumble to herself..
The sixth year placed the second one, a little way off from the first. She had a nail-triangle, in mind! You know, to make the task more interesting, to her own self. Not that it was boring. It certainly required her full attention, or she knew she could end up hurting her hand.
Gold didn't want that to happen.
She placed the nail on the wood, tapped it twice; and, when it was gently embedded in the piece of wood, tapped harder. Once, twice, thrice. The nail now driven in, she rested the hammer for a moment; before picking up the last nail, she had carried over to her desk.
This, she placed a little above the other two nails she had hammered in. The third point of her triangle, of course. Then, with half a smile at her own silly!randomness, she began to tap the nail down. When she finally straightened up, the third nail had been driven in too, and its head was flat against the wood, the way it should have been.
Well. What next?

"Ready to move on, sir," Gold said, raising a hand out of habit. She lowered it, when she realized it was in the air.
Sooo.
What were they going to do, now? Gold wanted to work on the plan she had brought. Move on to something productive.

Her nail was IN. She had done it, now for the fun part. Using her hammer, she carefully banged on the nail a few times. But before she could get it all the way in, she froze when hearing Lawson yelling. Well, she heard the banging first, but it was his yelling that stoped her. Looking up and seeing that they were moving on, she put down her hammer and waited for the next set of instructions.

Marie had been sitting there pouting. She still did not think it was fair that she HAD to sit by Destiny when they didn't have the rope binding them together anymore. She really was not in the mood to be in class now or to do nay work. However, since they were going to be using DANGEROUS tools she decided to participate. Who knows, maybe she might accidently hit Lawson's thumb with a hammer.
After getting the needed supplies she started to pound the nail in the board.
Tap, taptap, taptaptap....
Okay, well that was fun... NOT!
What would be fun is tapping on Destiny, now that would be funny.
She looked over at her but decided not to do anything since Lawson was watching. Being mean and all he would probably give her detention and she did NOT want to have to spend any more time with him than necessary.
Alright, I´m a little obsessive about taping nails...I admit it..but it´s so de-stressing, and easy! sooooooo easy!
TAP TAP TAP and the nail´s in the wood TAP TAP TAP and I have one more in TAP TAP TAP and another one comes TAP TAP TAP ho ho ho little gnomes came to work he he he and a pirate always beeeee!!!
She taped the nails to the beat of the melody newly invented.
Then, Professor Lawson asked if we could proceed onto the next step.
ohhhh...No more taping? I´ll ask him later if I can take some of these to nail in the Grounds...
Sarah was just about to hit the nail on the head for the last time, when she was distracted.A screaming coming from the other side of the room, made her look up and miss the nail, the hammer instead thudding into the actual wood. "What foolishness is....Oh. My. Merlin." Her mouth dropped open as she saw what was going on.
Miranda BelCanto....had serious issues with that nail.SERIOUS.It didn't look like it was going to survive the pounding she was giving it, and Sarah was starting to worry about her friend's sanity. She'd never seen her that - angry, was it? Annnnnnd she'd never heard Professor Lawson shout that loudly.
Jumping slightly, Sarah quickly put her hammer down on the desk and stepped back. She didn't want to be shouted at as well. "Urrrr, yeah.I...don't mind moving on either," she stuttered, agreeing with the majority, and shooting a quizzical glance over at the Captain.
Nymphy raised his hand, "Am I getting it?" he asked. He hit down, but the nail began to bend. "No no no! Stay straight....." he said, sighing with just the slightest hint of frstration. He was tempted to use magic to MAKE it stay straight, but resisted. it was Muggle studies after all...........
He replaced the nail and tried again. The nail got about half way down and then stopped. "Why does it stop half way down? It gets really hard and barely even moves......" he asked. This was so useless, even if he was a muggle, Nymphy doubted hhe was the type to biuld things and use tools. But he stayed at it and wanted to succeed becasue he liked this class and really liked the teacher. It was an enjoyable experience and Nymphy hoped that the professor appreicated his effort......
Fallon tried her hardest not to laugh as Lawson started to yell at one of the older Hufflepuff students. It was really funny to see Lawson yelling like that, especially when it wasn't at that Jake kid that was always causing mischief in his classes. She looked around the room to see a lot of people already finished with the assignment at hand. Then Lawson asked if anyone else needed help or if they were ready to move on. She was ready to move on, but she didn't answer his question.
Theo was almost finished tapping his third nail in when he heard the ear shattering scream of the Professor yelling out a students name. He had wondered how long it would take for the Professor to say something to that one. She'd been beating the nails and boards as if it were a bunch of Blue Cornish Pixies run amok......
"there, " he said admiring his work, " it looks like they're all the way in......." then he sat puzzled, "I wonder why this other end of the hammer is split down the middle?"
