To old readers - ahoy, maties! Welcome BACK! For news ones, I'm Maxie, and I've been writing fanfiction on SS for over three years. This is my thirteenth FF thread, and one which deals with the "darker" lot of first generation characters - Tom Riddle, Bellatrix Black, Lucius Malfoy and more. I may not always stick to cannon details, but one thing is guaranteed - Sit back and relax, because you're going to love this ride.

The Castles’ yearly balls were always runaway successes. And, now, with fairy-lit rose bushes to line the vast grounds, and floating, gold-touched candles to illuminate their green, the Castles were sure their annual ball would be an even grander affair than usual.

“It shall be peerless,” Countess Alva Castle said, dipping her hands in her traditional bowl of rosewater, a technique that supposedly made them younger and fresher. “Of course, the Blacks…” her voice trailed off, but she shook away the uncertainty immediately. “A lot depends upon you this year, Andra.”

Young Andra Castle put down the hairbrush she had been running through her thick, black hair, and raised an eyebrow. “Mother, please. Not the hostess thing again.”

“Andra! Your English sounds vulgar. If you can not sound the way a Castle should, you had better not speak. Your language shall be noted during the ball – you are the hostess. I can not tolerate you speaking so.”

Couldn’t she ever give the language thing a rest? Andra rolled her eyes, exasperated. The ball. The hostess. That was all she had hear about, this past month. Alva was making too big a deal out of this! Yes, being the hostess of a Castles’ ball was a prestige – at least, that was what everyone said – but, really, there was nothing grand about the fact that the hosting duties were being passed down to Andra, this year.

For as long as she, Andra, could remember, her mother, the Countess, had hosted the ball. And done it splendidly, too. But it was time Andra was introduced into formal society – which probably meant she had come of age, right? – and the Countess had found the perfect way of doing it: passing on her hosting duties, and introducing Andra as the new hostess.

Which duties Andra was already finding hectic, even with a week still to go before the ball took place. The way her mother spoke – You would think it was something out-of-the-world, being a hostess.

“Be careful, Andra.”

“Don’t walk like that, Andra.”

“Speak politer, Andra.”

“Can’t you learn to mix a butterwhisky, Andra?”

“Andra!”

“The Castles’ Balls are famed far and wide, both for grandeur of manner, and splendour of décor,” Countess Alva was now saying, as she carefully lifted the bowl of rosewater off the dressing table. “The splendour of décor, the Castles shall see to. But the grandeur of manner, you seem quite intent upon ruining.”

Getting to her feet, Andra stifled a yawn.

“I’m off to see Lucius. Maybe even Cissy. Call me back when you start speaking English again, mother dearest.”

Alva Castle turned around, her manner impatiently patient, but Andra’s footsteps had already faded into a light, faraway sort of sound. The door to the Countess’s bedroom stood slightly ajar and, with a little sigh, Alva shut it, close.

Alright... now that I'm over the surprise and have [finally] remembered my manners -- Welcome to TSRTD, hun! Well I've been sick with a mysterious illness so that means being confined to my room except for classes. WELL my name is Jack, but I have a lot of nicknames but I don't want to bore you with those. You can make one up if you wish or I shall have to call on the creative gods and think of a new one for you to call me. But yesh, Maxie's writing is my new heroine and inspiration as I continue with my FF [coughs] see signature

ANYWHOO [my, I seem to be using that a lot when I write in your threads] uhm uhm uhm...excellent post again dearie. Andra seems to be able to hold her own and I commend her for that. Having to deal with annoying family members is a hassle. Trust me I know.

First of all, what the devil happened to the diamond and why doesn't Andra care? OMG! She must be rich if she can throw diamonds away on a whim.

Varius sounds really cute though.

I think I like him, I don't know if I like him playing with Andra but ... *shrugs* he seems like a fun guy. I can't believe it's already time for the ball *Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee* I love these things

She doesn't care because she's used to him - she knows he must have made it disappear with magic, or something like that. Not to mention... she's pretty rich. LOL.

Did I mention? Us is... DEFINITELY not my masterpiece. =P I mean... If there's an FF I've loved writing more than the others, it's probably Ecstasy. But... you know... my fics are like my poems... I love them because they carry a bit of my emotions, a bit of me; and, at the same time, I always think there's room, a WHOLE lot of it, for improvement in them.

Butttt... point is -- GOOD LUCK FOR YOUR NANOWRIMO! Okay, maybe that wasn't the point, but I totally wanted to say that. <3

I have a big family too. 'Cept they're all across the pond cos now I'm in America [dies] I dislike it here except for one exception

Next year is going to be a lot better when I'm not 2000 miles away from her. And I hardly see me da cos he's working and I remind him to much of me mum and me stepmum despises me cos I'm not "perfect" like her darling angel daughter. [sigh] family huh?

“Jen?”

Sion White peeked into her sister’s bedroom, her long eyelashes curled from a hint of Castor oil. She blinked as the room swam into sight, then shook her head with a small smile - much as she knew her twin, Sion was certain she would never get used to Jenna’s bedroom: milk-white was the place's middle name.

Milk-white sheets, milk-white nets, even a milk-white replica of some Greek goddess. There was a lingering scent of red roses in the room, a result of Jenna's excessive use of the same perfume - and even the bottle of the said perfume was milk-white in colour. The bare relief, in fact, came in the crisp form of the curtains, their fabric thick folds of a very deep purple.

Jenna looked up from the rather fat book she was reading, and her lips curved into a small smile when she saw her sister in the doorway. “Hey Si. Come on in," she said brightly.

“Um, no,” Sion said, and she accompanied her words with a quick shake of her head. “I just wanted to tell you that I might - probably will - stay over at Anna’s, tonight - be back tomorrow afternoon, if not earlier. You take good care, alright? Don't forget to feed Marjan -” that being the name of the little goldfish the two young women share - "Don't forget to -"

"Si?"

"Listen to me, will you please, Jen?" Sion plowed on. "Don't forget to throw out the litter - you always forget, you know that - don't forget to lock the door before you go to bed, and don't -"

Jenna sighed, and placed her book on the bedside table. “Si," she cut through, her tones weary. "I have a ball to attend, I can't feed Marjan, or throw out the litter, or go to bed, or -”

“Tonight?” Sion asked, surprise in her voice.

"Glad you decided to let me put in a word," Jen said, rolling her eyes as Sion's "do not" list finally came to a rest. “Yeah, tonight. The Castles’ ball, don’t you know, silly?”

Sion bit her lip. “But of course, how could I forget?" she said, shaking her head again. "That was silly of me. But -" and she smiled, a sly, most un-Sion smile. "Beginning to get invited to some of grand balls, aren’t you?” She asked. "Growing up, huh? Well..." she stepped away from the door, and shrugged a little. “Don’t kill too many guys, alright?”

Jenna threw back her silver hair and laughed.

“I’ll try not to, Si, I’ll try not to.”

Well, I really don't know... sometimes, a certain name seems so perfect for a character, I just can't ignore it. As for Marjan... that's a Pakistani name. It's pronounced "Mur-jaan" - ur as in "curl" - and I really adore it. <3

I have been thinking... maybe I should have this story moved to "Other stories." I keep editing, and its almost beginning to lose the "Boom, wham, wow you kiss marvellously" element. Not that it had much of it in the first place but, you know, it was supposed to be a romance story.
