To old readers - ahoy, maties! Welcome BACK! For news ones, I'm Maxie, and I've been writing fanfiction on SS for over three years. This is my thirteenth FF thread, and one which deals with the "darker" lot of first generation characters - Tom Riddle, Bellatrix Black, Lucius Malfoy and more. I may not always stick to cannon details, but one thing is guaranteed - Sit back and relax, because you're going to love this ride.

The Castles’ yearly balls were always runaway successes. And, now, with fairy-lit rose bushes to line the vast grounds, and floating, gold-touched candles to illuminate their green, the Castles were sure their annual ball would be an even grander affair than usual.
“It shall be peerless,” Countess Alva Castle said, dipping her hands in her traditional bowl of rosewater, a technique that supposedly made them younger and fresher. “Of course, the Blacks…” her voice trailed off, but she shook away the uncertainty immediately. “A lot depends upon you this year, Andra.”
Young Andra Castle put down the hairbrush she had been running through her thick, black hair, and raised an eyebrow. “Mother, please. Not the hostess thing again.”
“Andra! Your English sounds vulgar. If you can not sound the way a Castle should, you had better not speak. Your language shall be noted during the ball – you are the hostess. I can not tolerate you speaking so.”
Couldn’t she ever give the language thing a rest? Andra rolled her eyes, exasperated. The ball. The hostess. That was all she had hear about, this past month. Alva was making too big a deal out of this! Yes, being the hostess of a Castles’ ball was a prestige – at least, that was what everyone said – but, really, there was nothing grand about the fact that the hosting duties were being passed down to Andra, this year.
For as long as she, Andra, could remember, her mother, the Countess, had hosted the ball. And done it splendidly, too. But it was time Andra was introduced into formal society – which probably meant she had come of age, right? – and the Countess had found the perfect way of doing it: passing on her hosting duties, and introducing Andra as the new hostess.
Which duties Andra was already finding hectic, even with a week still to go before the ball took place. The way her mother spoke – You would think it was something out-of-the-world, being a hostess.
“Be careful, Andra.”
“Don’t walk like that, Andra.”
“Speak politer, Andra.”
“ Can’t you learn to mix a butterwhisky, Andra?”
“Andra!”
“The Castles’ Balls are famed far and wide, both for grandeur of manner, and splendour of décor,” Countess Alva was now saying, as she carefully lifted the bowl of rosewater off the dressing table. “The splendour of décor, the Castles shall see to. But the grandeur of manner, you seem quite intent upon ruining.”
Getting to her feet, Andra stifled a yawn.
“I’m off to see Lucius. Maybe even Cissy. Call me back when you start speaking English again, mother dearest.”
Alva Castle turned around, her manner impatiently patient, but Andra’s footsteps had already faded into a light, faraway sort of sound. The door to the Countess’s bedroom stood slightly ajar and, with a little sigh, Alva shut it, close. [Reviews Welcome] List of updates:

The horse-driven carriage pulled to an elegant halt at the entrance to the Castles’ vast gardens. They were beautifully lit, but the two horses who had slowed, only now, to a stop, seemed to believe their magnificence was not much, in comparison to their own sleek coats. In pride, they threw back their heads and, had Andromeda been there, she would probably have given a most exasperated roll of her eyes.
"Why train your animals to be like you?" she often said in a fit of fury. "Or do you wish to prove there really is no difference between them and ..."
But the fact was, she was not here now, and so could not pass any such comment. The horses stood still now, and a slender, quite fair girl with platinum hair that curled lightly at the tips, climbed out. She was followed by a darker-skinned, but more graceful, young woman, this latter dressed, as was her well-known custom, in a shade quite dark. It was silk, fine, sheer one, but the hue was blacker than the night itself.
- Blacker than the night and, unlike the latter, certainly not lit up by any movement of hand or any merry glint of eye.
Behind the walls that rose, in protection of the gardens, in the sheen of lights, an old woman's mouth widened into a rather cunning smile. Not that this woman's intentions were, at the moment, cunning - it was her smile that was, always was. She cleared her throat, then turned to her son. “Those are the Black sisters, are they not?” Mafilda Malfoy asked, her eyes like a cat's - sly, attentive, ready for action.
“Yes, mother,” Lucius Malfoy replied, and the irritation in his tones was too evident for words. His collar was as stiff as his voice but, at the moment, it served him better; for it gave him something of that devilish look so many women shall easily fall for, and the way he stood was more than just manly – it was exquisite.
“Carry themselves right,” Mafilda commented. Her eyes were focused, not on the son besides her, but on the two sisters she had seen, descend their expensive carriage. Lucius had a feeling he knew what was coming - it came each time his mother saw a girl she deemed "fit" - but kept his mouth shut. “Beautiful ladies.”
“Yes, mother.”
“Who’s the really pretty one?”
He was bored, and desperately wanted to get away. But he knew he could not. So he stood there and asked, rather dryly, if she meant the one with the blonde hair. The one in the light-coloured silk, or something of that.
“No, no," Mafilda said quickly. "She’s darn pretty alright, Lucius, but the other is more beautiful. I believe she knows how to carry herself, how to hold her head up high. The other ... lacks practice." She gave a very horrible, girly laugh. "So who is she, Lucius, the one with the dark hair?”
“Bellatrix Black, mother," he replied, as dryly as before.
“Nice, very nice,” Mafilda said, and she gave a quick clap of her hands and turned, for the first time since she had glimpsed the two Black sisters tonight, to face her eldest son. “Well, Lucius, I want to see you two dancing away by the end of this night. Closely, if I have to be clearer.”
“Excuse me, mother?” He asked, forcing – with the greatest difficulty – his jaw to remain close, and not clang to the ground.
“I said I want to see you and Bellatrix Black dancing away by the end of this night, Lucius,” Mafilda Malfoy returned casually, but her words were even clearer now, and her eyes glazed behind their most sickly-sweet pretense of innocence. “Or should I say you and Bellatrix future-Malfoy.”

no honestly i like the castles,the palaces,the balls,the gowns...*squeals*
*sighs* how i wish i can wear a gown and go to a ball...
i quite like the times of the royality and nobles but what i dont like is people like Mafilda!

oh yeah i love the stone structures too.i pretty much like medivial architecture...i mean i have seen quite a few bulidings in bombay and i am literally in love with those structures.the typical european structures and all...cool...
you do have gowns?wow...i wish to own at least one and attend some ball...hehehehe...

oh yeah though i have a bit of dust allergy so i cant breathe the dust from the old library shelves
but yeah i do like the smell of an old book...you know something like its been kept in for qite sometime and you just open it and there is this really weird but nice smell and feel about it and i love the color of old pages and parchments and the rustle of it when you turned them just like that of autumn leaves*hmmm*
ah so in love with them...they go all something like yellowish brown...they look so cool....
and you wear gowns to meet your friends!
what are you some Princess of Persia!

hm...i know they are lovely scents...
yeah gowns arent that a surprise for formal occasions...well it surprised me much more because we hardly wear gowns here even for formal occasions its basically some nice chudidaar or slawaar kameez...i guess you know all about them

yup i agree...here mostly if it is something important or formal and if we want dont want to wear a chudidaar or something maximum we wear a short kurta and jeans...so its pretty cool...but i guess gowns are much cooler | |
