Default DADA Lesson: Kappas

It’s a fine albeit cold Monday afternoon in December. You need not worry about freezing your bum off, however! With every step you take towards the DADA classroom on the third floor, you feel the welcoming warmth radiating off your skin. Professor Khanna has charmed a fair bit of the corridor and the classroom in its entirety for the comfort of every living thing involved.

That’s right. Humans aren’t only what was in Dhruv’s care today. Upon entering the room, you’ll encounter a huge large transparent water tank at the front. It’s comfortable enough to have a curious creature splashing around: it seemed to be a scaly monkey-like one with webbed hands. Its head was an odd shape at the top - it seemed to have a depression. All the while, the creature is making cheeky faces in your direction as you walk through the door.

Professor Dhruv is leaning casually against their desk, arms folded. Don’t let this posture deter you from greeting them; they were mainly trying to keep their hands from reaching for the sunglasses tucked in their pocket and slapping it on. Instructions are given verbally: “Please take a seat, write your name and what you think this creature may be on a slip of parchment. Once done, fold the parchment, leaving it on your desk for now. In other words, DO NOT blurt out or otherwise make known the creature’s name. Those who answer correctly via the parchment will receive a prize. A hefty twenty point loss goes to each student who does not comply.” The classroom seating is arranged as per norm: rows of comfortable desk and chairs to accommodate all.

OOC: Hiii, all you beautiful people! Welcome to this OOC DADA lesson! I decided to set the thread up a little earlier than intended, but you’ll have about 27 hours before we move on! Have fun with Dhruv’s little activity until then! As a gentle reminder, all da rules apply! CLASS HAS BEGUN!

Lesson Progression:

* Greetings + First round of questions
* Responses to questions + Mini Activity instructions
* Responses to Mini Activity
* More responses to Mini Activity + New question
* Responses + Main Activity
* Responses to Main Activity - Part 1
* Responses to Main Activity - Part 2
* Responses to Main Activity - Part 3
* Responses to Main Activity - Part 3 + Class dismissal

Haven side eyed her brother as he decided to sit next to her. It's not the first time, but it's rare enough that Haven still found it surprising. She had peeked to check his answer was correct though, to save him any potential embarrassment. To save her any embarrassment too, by association. But Sailor was very smart. She didn't often need to worry about him in that aspect.

After mumbling some sort of answer to the Professor's first question, her gaze shifted to the kappa in the tank as the class was given their second assignment. It was acting oddly, in her opinion. Too sentient, for a beast confined in a tank. It made Haven uncomfortable. She moved her attention back to the professor as a spell was mentioned, because that was always the most useful part of DADA. The kappa wasn't her problem.

The sixth year summoned two cucumbers from the pile in quick succession, handing the smaller one to Sailor. "Knife or spell?" she asked him, flicking her own wand from its holster. She was quiet adept at knife work already, and liked the idea of this spell. Simple and effective. "Professor," Haven asked as she began carving the letter 'H', mumbling the incantation under her breath, "would this etching spell work on anything?"

Mitsuki did not mind Mercer's invasion of her creative space all that much, the smudges his fingers made while poking the ink added to the water effect of the rain, but what she did mind was her piece of parchment being unceremoniously torn from right beneath her quill before she had added a few more final touches. She did not lament the loss too much, however, and simply grabbed another piece of parchment to begin another drawing. Though that maneuver too ceased prematurely and she gave the professor her attention for a brief moment.

She found it interesting that 'sea demon' was a descriptor used here seeing as the kappa she knew were no where near the sea but rather rivers and lakes. One of the older professors a Himitsumahou liked to call them 'river children' and Mitsuki had always liked that description. She did not ask about this, however, seeing as the professor ought to know something she did not or else he would not be a professor. Though she may ask her uncle the next time she wrote to him - he was the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor at Himitsumahou, after all.

Attention back down to her blank parchment, Mitsuki once again began drawing a kappa and somewhat tuned out everyone else's answers. Everyone except Mercer's, however, and that also meant that she heard the professor's response. This kappa had come all the way from Japan just for their class? The creature must be terribly tired and confused. "Do you think they the ones we met at Lake Saiko over the summer?" she asked her friend with eyes slightly widening in her curiosity. She also heard that they would need a cucumber, so Mitsuki rose from her seat and smoothed down her skirt before gliding over to collect her own. Only she didn't come back with just one cucumber but two - one for herself and another for Mercer in case he got hungry.

Her attention once again waking and waning between this reality and the next, it was no wonder that the Ravenclaw once again misheard instructions as she began carving into her cucumber the mundane way with her own silver knife.

Hmmm...perhaps some decorations on this as well...

Seemed like such an odd way to appease a water demon - but hey cucumbers were good so who was Maxine to judge. She mad her way to the front of the room smiled and waved at the Kappa .... maybe being friendly toward it would help to .... grabbed the vetable and went back to her seat.

She was going to give magic a try on this one. Taking of her wand and saying the incandtation she began to draw out Maxine Rae Bixby. Afterall the Professor was rather smart to use their whole name - although Maxine had yet to meet another person with her name let alone another student, but in the real world some old lady ... but yes Maxine was an old lady name ... might be in the same place as her and the water demon.

"Does the hand writing need to be legable? Like are they reading the name? Or is this a 'it's the thought that counts' kind of situtation?" Because Maxine wasn't sure that her name was entirely readable on a cucumber.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

He had learned about the creature inside the tank through his own studies last year which meant that Daniel was not taking notes. He already had them written down inside the little notebook in his bag. So should the professor mention that he wasn't paying attention, he could show that he was ten steps ahead.

It was interesting to see how the Kappa's entire demeanor changed when the new professor informed them that they would be practicing how to guard themselves against the creatures. Did this imply that Kappas understood human speech? Could Kappas speak? Or was it the sight of the cucumbers that sparked the Kappa's rage because it had experience with what would happen? The Hufflepuff had a lot of questions, both about the Kappa and the carving of the cucumber but again, he didn't speak. He figured someone would mention it sooner or later. That, or he would go to the library and do some extra research. He preferred self-study over asking these days anyway.

Daniel rose from his seat and walked to the front of the classroom, his hands deep inside his robe pockets. To pass the time while waiting in line, the Hufflepuff read the answers on the blackboard. When it was his turn, Daniel pulled one hand out of his pocket and took a cucumber from the container before returning to his desk.

He sat down again and rolled up his sleeve to retrieve his wand. He was studying magic at a magical school. He refused to carve his name with a regular knife. He rolled the cucumber around until he found a suitable surface to carve his name into, then pointed his wand at it. The Hufflepuff mumbled the incantation firmly and intently while hovering his wand an inch above the cucumber. "Scribere" the spell worked instantly, and Daniel moved it vertically before making his first letter, a backward C.

It took a few moments and he began to get irritated that the top and bottom lines of his E were not the same length, but he eventually placed his wand on the desk, a rare smile on his face. He was pleased with the outcome.

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

So they were carving their names into cucumbers to protect themselves from kappas. That was fine. Except... they wouldn't be in any real danger, right? They'd just be giving the kappa a cucumber present? Right?

...he wanted to make sure he was EXTRA prepared. He grabbed two cucumbers, meaning to write his name both ways. One with a knife, one with his wand. He set one cucumber carefully in front of him, holding on to it with his left hand. Then, with his wand hand, he used "Scribere." It worked on the first try, but it kept stopping and and didn't carve clearly enough so he had to cast several times to get it working.

BRANDON FOX

He set the cucumber aside, and grabbed the other one. His wand was replaced with a potions knife as he carved his name in carefully. He was a little anxious that he'd get a cut by accident, but he had a very steady, precise hand and it turned out to be even less trouble than he had with his wand.

BRANDON FOX

His cucumbers prepared, Brandon added more to his notes on kappas. He took VERY detailed notes, and it took time.

Phoenix was rather fascinated by the kappa in the tank. Of course he knew what they were, but he'd never seen one up close before and now was really the most opportune time with it being in the tank, not easily able to harm anyone. He recorded some observations about it in his journal while the professor spoke and his classmates contributed to the discussion.

But when it was time to get a cucumber, the third year set aside his still opened journal to magically retrieve the vegetable. "What do kappas do with the cucumbers, Professor?" he asked curiously before accio'ing the vegetable to him. He was always a fan of doing things the magical way. He was a wizard after all and welcomed the practice. "Do they eat them, or do something else with them?" He imagined the most logical answer was that they ate them, but this kappa was about to be overwhelmed with cucumbers. It was also a funny thought to think about kappas with an inscribed cucumber collection.

And yes, he would be inscribing the cucumber magically as well. Phoenix was not as familiar with this inscribing spell, but he really appreciated the chance to learn a new spell and to practice it. He had watched the professor demonstrate, then practiced the incantation and wand movement himself before putting it all together. "Scribere!" he commanded as he slowly traced his name - Phoenix Marchbanks. The letters began to etch into the cucumber, though it felt a little sloppy to the Ravenclaw. Clearly he would need more practice with this spell.

Or at least a really good natural way of flavoring ones water. Which according to her books also had health properties but that was not the point for today's lesson.

Listening to the instructions, she decided immediately to go with the magical way (it was unlikely she'd ever have a knife on her person, but a wand for sure!). Grabbing a cucumber, she practiced saying "scry-bear" a few times to make sure she had decent enough pronunciation before she got distracted enough to ask a quick quick. "Professor Khanna? You said you use your full name to make sure you're the one being protected, but would the cucumber work to protect multiple people? Like... If I just put 'Thanatos' does that mean my family would be in the clear too if we were all together?" Or perhaps it was one person per veggie.

She decided to start with her last name regardless of the answer. And maaaaaybe she'd add Vera, if she felt the need. "Scribere!" She said softly, using her wand to then write out Thanatos carefully into the green food.

Dhruv shook their head. “That seems like an easy fix, doesn’t it? But no, it does not work this way. Should you etch just your surname, the protection will only work for one family member, chosen at random by the Kappa, or more commonly, it will favour the one who gave it the cucumber. In cases of a group, it would be best course of action is to trick the Kappa into bowing.”

Dhruv peered at Haven’s work which she had just gotten started on. They were pleased to see she wasn’t having difficulty with the spell. “It would. While it is not permanent, do be mindful of where you do your carvings.” Like on the walls of Hogwarts Castle for example. But they trusted the older Hufflepuff had good judgement.

SPOILER!!: Mitsuki! <3 Saving this image just because Dhruv is sentimental about it in my head :3

Mitsuki need not worry about the Kappa; it was well taken care of. Most importantly, Dhruv always prided themself in being considerate with any creature secured for their lessons. A Kappa might be a danger to humans but it was still innocent. At least while it was in the tank and not in open bodies of water. They paused by the girl, expecting to catch a glimpse of her own name as she was clearly working quite diligently. Dhruv’s gaze fastened on the cucumber for some seconds longer than necessary in surprise. “Ms. Rasting, excellent display of skill with your carving, however, I think you’ve gotten yourself a little mixed up. Your name has to be carved on the cucumber.” Nothing to worry about! This was an easy fix as there were still plenty of the veggie left.

SPOILER!!: Maxine! <3

For the record, Dhruv did not think that Maxine was an old lady’s name. They knew another Maxine or two {thanks to all his travels} and none were old. Yet. They could see why Maxine of Gryffindor House would ask such a question though; the name on the carving would not have been able to be read at first glance. “It’s the latter situation; effort matters. Don’t you worry about it.” They offered Maxine a smile. Full points for effort!

Dhruv doubted that they had ever met a student quieter than Daniel. Everyone had their own way of learning and the professor was in no way judging him for being the ‘silent’ sort of student. In any case, the Hufflepuff was participating in the activity now though… was that irritation they detected? Dhruv eventually made their way to Daniel who, by that time, had finished the little project. “Nicely done, Mr. Yoon.”

Nope, no danger here, Brandon! Then again, maybe Brandon wanted to get the feel of the activity both the magical and mundane way. “Perfect. On both counts.”

OOC: Loving all the interactions happening here, guys! There's still a bit over twenty four hours left for this mini activity!

Maisey was busy writing down what she thought was in the tank. Personally she really wanted it to be a mermaid. That’s what she wrote down. Against all hope she hoped for mermaids. When she learn that it was kappas she was a bit disappointed. But she made notes about everything she knew about kappas, which was nothing. So she made notes on what the others knew and didn’t add anything. She was distracted watching the kappa bounce around the tank. They really were like scaly monkeys. Did the kappa just shake its fist at them? Well that was rude.

As with just about everything so far this term amazed her. Of all the magical incantations she had learned so far, and all the magical ways of doing things. A cucumber with your name inscribed on it was what you used to protect yourself from it. Definitely interesting to her. Or get it to bow and spill the water out of the top of its head to weaken it.

Watching as the professor demonstrated how to perform the inscription spell. That would come in handy to know for many many other things. When the professor told them to come up and get the cucumbers and a knife. Just in case she had a hard time with the spell. She expected not to. But she had been getting extra of whatever she needed all term. If allowed. JUST IN CASE. She got back to her seat. ” Scribere” She said as she carefully etched out her name on the cucumber.

She took the other cucumber and did the same thing. This time she added her middle as well. For full effect.

Okay, mini activity: They had to etch their full name into a cucumber in order for them to be protected against the kappas attacks. It sounded easy enough. If Bellas grandmother had been there she'd have given Professor K a racket for using the vegetable for something that she deemed unneccessary, and would only damage a perfectly tasty veggie. Smiling to herself at the image of her grandma Bella got up from her seat, and fetched herself a cucumber and a knife listening with half an ear to the questions that was queried around her as she got herself settled back in her seat.

Back at her desk Bella first practiced the incantation in her head a few times, and then pulled out her wand from her holster to practice the corresponding wand movement. Then she turned her full attention to the very green and tastly looking cucumber. She wanted to do this right so she was fully protected against kappa attacks.

Holding her wand over the cucumber she chanted "Scribere!" and began tracing Isabella Eloise Connolly slowly into the cucumbers flesh. When she was done and happy with the gold and red lettered result she raised her hand to ask "Professor Khanna will the protection be equally strong if you just had say half a cucumber to write on instead of a whole one, because you have snacked on half of it?

Well what that meant was she needed to try again. "Well practice makes perfect" She said taking a bite out of the cucumber she already had since it wasn't necessary for the Kappa anymore and grabbed another.

This time really concentrating on her hand writting and steading her wand hand "Scribere" she said, once again writing out her whole name. Maxine Rae Bixby, and this time it was much cleaner ... maybe not as perfect has if she had actually used a quill, but it was clearly her name and not just some scribbles. Feeling much more confindent and ready.

Yes, sister, we saw that side eye. Sailor did not reciprocate, because he felt entitled to this seat beside her anyway. Besides, she didn't tell him to shove off so he wasn't going anywhere now. Not when he'd settled down his bag and took out all his things.

Instead of answering the professor's questions of kappas, Sailor chose to remain silent. He dove into taking notes instead, nodding quietly to himself if he already knew a fact that another classmate shared. Under the title, 'WATER ALIEN', of the fresh page in his noted, he wrote 'Kappa' for formality. Then wrote down the rest of the information he'd gathered from the class, both the ones he already knew and ones he didn't. The Ravenclaw has also occasionally looked up when he saw the kappa move from his peripheral vision. What a horrific, ugly thing. He liked it.

Sailor was ready to stand from his seat to retrieve his own cucumber, when Haven offered him one. The smaller one, because of course. The third year gave her an affectionate stink eye as he accepted the vegetable. "Spell," he replied plainly. They came here to learn magic, and Sailor would have to have broken either his wand or wand arm before he would decide on using muggle means. They do that too much at home.

Also, Professor, Sailor would have found it funny that they trusted his sister to have good judgment or to even be mindful. The Ravenclaw had the faintest of amused smiles on his face, just because.

"Scribere." The Ravenclaw began to trace his name onto the cucumber. After a while, his name was etched in, even though the penmanship was messy. His penmanship was almost like chicken scratch anyway. SAILOR ZHANG. He looked at his sister's cucumber to see if she was done too.

Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll

Desiree was slightly nervous when a first year (Hope) added on to her answer. Not that she minded anyone piggybacking off her answers. It was just that she was not good at DADA, and she wouldn’t want someone else to be wrong because of her. Fortunately, that didn’t happen, and she couldn’t help but feel a little pleased with herself for being on the right track.

She happened to glance at the kappa right as it started shaking its fist. Yikes! It was kind of scary when it wasn’t making silly faces. She was more than a little relieved to hear that the activity didn’t involve anyone going near it… yet. So it was true that kappas liked cucumbers. She wondered if the kappa would like fancy cucumber sandwiches too, and she had to stifle a giggle as she imagined a group of kappas dressed in fancy clothes at an underwater tea party.

Desiree watched intently as Professor Khanna demonstrated the Scribere spell. That flame-colored writing looked so cool! Did the lettering appear in those colors every time, or did the caster get to pick the color? Wouldn’t it be neat if she could make it write in pink? Never one to turn down an opportunity to learn a new spell, she eagerly retrieved a cucumber.

“Scry-bear,” she practiced the incantation quietly under her breath. “Scry-bear, Scribere, Scribere…” That pronunciation made her giggle! “Scry-bear” sounded like a woodland creature that practiced divination! Or possibly a device used for divination, like a cross between a scrying mirror and a teddy bear. Was that a thing? If it wasn’t, it should be!

Feeling confident with the funny pronunciation, Desiree was ready to try the spell for real. She rolled her cucumber over, inspecting it as she went - had to find its good side, of course! Just because it was a practical spell didn’t mean she couldn’t try to make it look nice too. She set it down, finally finding an angle she liked, and brandished her wand. “Scribere!” she cast, tracing her name in fancy script. Letters instantly appeared on the cucumber:

DESIREE YVETTE MARCHAND

Desiree examined her work. It didn’t look exactly like her normal handwriting, but she could still clearly read the name. She was going to call that a win for now. Later, who knows? Maybe Professor Khanna would let her have some extra cucumbers so she could keep practicing?

Mercer was so excited by the suggestion that he could name the kappa, or at least suggest a name, that he could barely sit still. Just still enough to accept the cucumber that Mitsuki brought to him and then immediately drop it on the floor. Twice. He was impatient to carve his name into the thing with the knife, no time for learning a new spell.

Mercer. Doyle. Branxton.

Done. Also, he carved himself a bit, so Mercer added a bloody thumbprint as a period at the end of his name. "For a treat. He definitely knows all the same kappas we know, so I want him to bring back a good report." He explained it to Mitsuki, but he knew that she knew. She knew.

"PROFESSOR. I think we should call the kappa Gherkin. On account of he likes cucumbers."

M A I S E Y W I L D E

She took the other cucumber and did the same thing. This time she added her middle as well. For full effect.

M A I S E Y B L A I R W I L D E

Merpeople would certainly be an interesting lesson topic. Dhruv was, of course, constantly planning lessons; therefore it would be safe to assume that at some point, they would cover the Merpeople. Though, if Maisey wanted to be a mermaid as depicted in fairytales, then they’d have to disappoint her: the Wizarding World’s mermaids were vastly different in many ways. They nodded in approval of Maisey’s work. “Excellent, Ms. Wilde.”

Would Bella’s grandmother think that having her grandchild practicing something that may protect her life in the future? Dhruv would not have minded having this debate with the woman. They chuckled at the question. “Are you hungry, Ms. Connolly?” Because students were free to take the leftover veggies when they were dismissed. “To answer your question, it does not matter if the offered cucumber is whole or simply a piece. As long as your name is inscribed, that is the most important aspect.”

The professor wholeheartedly agreed with those words and that attitude! They stood close by, watching Maxine work, ready to offer further advice if needed. It was unnecessary though for the Gryffindor’s next round of efforts definitely paid off. “Practice really does make perfect. Nicely done, Ms. Bixby.”

Well the, Sailor, hopefully you had better judgement and would be able to call your sister out if she filed in that department. One Professor here was rooting for you! Both in the judgement aspect and in successfully using the spell, that is. Eyeing the cucumber, Dhruv deemed he could understand the scrawl, at least some of it. “Not a bad attempt at all. Would you perhaps want to practice a bit more with the spell, Mr. Zhang?”

There was such a hearty chuckle when it hit Dhruv that Mercer really loved the idea of naming the Kappa. Enthusiasm of their students were such a joy to witness. What was not a joy, was that blood. "Do you need something staunch the bleeding? Or to visit the Healer?" Surely the cut wasn't bad if Mercer wasn't preoccupied that a name couldn't be suggested. Gherkin! "That's fitting! I'l tell you what. Slip by the classroom tomorrow before you head to lunch. I'll have a surprise waiting for you." Said surprise will entail that bold stenciled sign bearing the Kappa's name.

* * * * * * * * * * *

A quick check of the time told Dhruv it was time to move on. “That was some great spellwork and effort made with the knives. You may finish up etching your names but we have one last bit of discussion to cover before we move onto the main activity. This question requires a little more thinking so creative responses, within reason, are welcome.” A little question to pick one’s brain, if you will. “Let us say you come across a Kappa but you have no cucumber to protect you and in your panic, you’ve forgotten tricking the Kappa into bowing is also efficient. How else would you choose to defend yourself and to make your escape?”

OOC: Hello, hello! Catch up is still allowed though you might want to have those precious brainbabies wrapping things up soon! We’re due to begin the main activity in twenty four hours :3

Flushing a bit red at Professor Khanna's question Bella shook her head in response. "No I'm not hungry at the moment sir, but the closer we get to dinner it might be a different story." She was after all a growing girl that needed to eat regularly. It was good to know that half a cucumber worked just as well a whole one as protection. The next question caused her to cotemplate a bit before raising her hand to answer. "I think I'd try and conjure up a fake cucumber that I'd toss to the kappa that'd hopefully distract it long enough for me to escape the scene." If she was a first year with little magic experience then her answer would be different obviously.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

As soon as he heard the compliment, Daniel turned to look at the teacher. "Thank you, Professor," he said politely, his voice croaking slightly from not using it much today. He refrained from rolling his eyes as he returned his gaze to his cucumber. He was looking for house points, not a compliment.

Daniel flipped through the pages of his textbook while waiting for the other students to carve their names into the cucumber.

When the time came, the sixth-year closed the textbook and turned to the front. He had anticipated an activity, but instead they were asked another question. One that required him to speak, and he wondered if the professor had done so on purpose in order for him to participate.

For a brief moment, the Hufflepuff contemplated. A killing curse would be an option if it became a live or death situations. But that one was illegal to use, and he didn't want to end up in Azkaban because of a creature. Besides, he instinctively knew that he would never be able to do it, and the most essential part of the unforgivable curses was intent. He frowned. How did his mind get to this point? Throwing a conjured cucumber, as Bella suggested, was also a good idea. Perhaps even better than what his mind had come up with.

Instead, he made a different choice. He raised his hand and leaned back in his seat. "Disapparate" he said simply. If the professor expected a lengthy explanation from him this time, he was mistaken. It was also very bold of the professor to assume he'd 'forget' how to trick it into bowing. It was that part of the question that irritated him the most. And had he apparated yet? No, not for a few months. But he doubted he'd be outside the castle, in the wild, facing a Kappa without the need to defend himself between now and then.

"Would a shield spell work?" Maxine asked ... making a mental note that from now on whenever she travelled she would just need to pack cucumbers with her. However, it might be better served to just not 'forget' to make it bow. Then again, in a fight or flight situation you brain down crazy things.

Desiree positively beamed at rhe praise from Khanna. "Thank you, Professor!" She replied with a polite smile. She was half listening to the conversations going on around her throughout the activity, and something she heard intrigued her. If it didn't matter whether you fed a kappa a full cucumber or just a piece, did that mean they would eat a cucumber sandwich if there was a name carved on the cucumber slices? She low-key wanted to test that idea, but it would have to wait for another time. Now they were moving on.

As soon as she heard the question, an idea popped into her mind. Maybe there was another way to spill the water in the kappa's head if she couldn't trick it into bowing? Like a drying spell or maybe she could siphon it out with Tergeo? Come to think of it, what would happen if you froze the water in a kappa's head? Would any of those things work? Maybe it was a special kind of water that was impervious to magic? She hoped not!

Raising her hand, she said, "Is the water in the kappa's head resistant to Magic? If it's not, I'd use a spell to drain it, like Tergeo." She had no idea if that would work, but it was all she could think of!

It was truly quite disappointing the cucumber thing didn't work for a group of people, especially because how did someone actually trip a kappa into bowing? Did you just... bow like one would with a hippogriff and hope it did it back? Did one have to be craftier than that? It was all the questions going through her head as she used her wand to also add Vera Brinley to the already written Thanatos.

Ah, and how else would they escape a kappa was it? She considered an answer while her peers offered their own, before raising her hand. "I'd engage it in a riddle contest and stump it with superior prowess and then run away while it's still trying to figure out the answer." She was going full The Hobbit here.

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Bleeding? Someone was bleeding? Brandon looked around frantically calmly until he found the people who was bleeding and then remembered that wasn't a good idea and looked away equally calmly. Everything is fine, Brandon thought to himself, looking as far away from Mercer as he reasonably could. "I'd probably throw something green or cucumber shaped or anything really at it to distract it. Then I'd run away as fast as possible." He paused. "Or... if I knew lots of magic, I could cast a spell to push it back as I ran away." Push the attacker away and run was his favorite strategy, but he wasn't very big or knowledgeable about magic so distract and run might be better. He'd probably end up curling up in a ball and begging the kappa to leave him alone, but he doubted that would work. It would also make everyone else laugh at him if he said that, which he didn't want.

The reason why this professor loved to ask questions which prompted creative answers since, aside from the questions making the students think, there could be some really great ideas which would stick with them all in a real world scenario. This response from Bella was a good example of why they did it. Dhruv nodded. “That would definitely buy you some time for you to make your escape.” It would give her a good start, at least until the Kappa figured out the cucumber was a fake.

SPOILER!!: Daniel! <3

House points would come if Daniel kept up the participation in the lesson; but no, this was just how Dhruv had planned this particular lesson, so them asking this question was not done on purpose. They were a big fan of that answer, however. “Great thinking! That’s one way to leave a Kappa bewildered, wondering where their prey had gone.” Not to mention being able to save your own life.

“Shield Charms can protect you against more than just spells, so yes. These Charms would work but only if there is some distance between you in the Kappa. Remember, the Charms send a barrier between you and the danger.” They smiled at Maxine, an encouraging gesture for her response. “A good spell to use in conjunction with Shield Charms should the Kappa be too close would be the Impediment Jinx. The jinx will slow the movements of the Kappa, giving you enough time to throw up a proper Shield Charm.”

SPOILER!!: Desiree! <3

“You’re quite welcome.” Encouraging their students is something they did best. Ah, if only there was bread around… perhaps Desiree could have tested that sandwich theory during the upcoming activity. Dhruv shook their head. “The water in their heads is not, just as the Kappas themselves are not susceptible to magic. You’re onto something there!”

That response legitimately got a laugh out of Dhruv. Yes, they caught that Gollum reference, having read the books multiple times. “Very crafty, Ms. Thanatos. I’m sure you’re bound to stump the Kappa for a bit; it’ll just have to deal with its preciousss prey making good her escape.”

SPOILER!!: Brandon! <3

Everything was indeed fine, Brandon. You were fine. Mercer was fine. Dhruv would have reassured Brandon if they hadn’t been busy ensuring Mercer was alright at the time. “Creative ideas, Mr. Fox! Perhaps a Knockback Jinx would be the spell you’re thinking about in this case?”

“Now, if you would be so kind enough to return your belongings to your bags then bring the bags up to the front of the class. The room needs to have some rearranging done...” Dhruv gave them some time to do this and once the students were away from the furniture, they did some quick magic that sent the desks and chairs stacking themselves neatly at the very back. With the brisk snap of their fingers, where the furniture had been a second ago, materialised Kappas.

Not real Kappas, mind you.

They were spaced evenly in neat rows of six, leaving enough space between each for comfortable movements both on the students and the Kappas’ part.
“These are replicas,” they informed the class, not wanting to send anyone into a panic. “Even though they are Charmed to act exactly as their real counterparts, they can easily be stopped in their tracks by myself if needed.” So what did today’s activity entail? “For the remainder of the lesson, it is your task to attempt to make your escape from the Kappa using one of the methods we discussed today - the use of the cucumber or tricking it into bowing. You may even test a few of the ideas your classmates suggested today.”

Dhruv gestured towards the replicas. “You may work with one of your classmates if you desire. After everyone has selected a ‘Kappa’, we’ll get started. I will be around so should you need assistance, send some red sparks up.” That way, they were more likely to see who needed help as opposed to anyone calling out to them and they would be unable to hear the voice over any chaos brought about by the activity. “As a reminder, the incantation for that Charm is Vermillious, while the wand movement is somewhat in the shape of a hook. Like this.” There was a demonstration. “You may work with a classmate if you desire. Go ahead, select a replica.”

They bounced on the soles of their feet while waiting for the instructions to be followed. Once the instructions were were, Dhruv snapped their fingers again. The replicas sprang to life, growling quietly and taking a rather menacing step toward their prey.

OOC: Main activity time! This will run for four days, so until Sunday 12th February. Please do not RP for the Kappa replicas! I’ll be jumping in to reply to your posts! Can’t wait to read those posts BTW! Have fun, my pretties! <3

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Brandon practically had a heart attack when the furniture turned into fake kappas- that wasn't the rearranging he'd expected! He tried not to look too frightened of fake dark creatures that couldn't really hurt him, especially not when the professor was right there to help if needed. But it took a lot of courage not to be scared.

Not really knowing how to make a kappa bow, and not being a particularly knowledgeable wizard, Brandon used his cucumbers. He knew he was right to make two! But now he would have preferred three or four or ten. Cucumbers ready, Brandon threw one at the nearest (he pretended it was the smallest) kappa. The other one was ready in case the kappa decided the first one wasn't enough or if another kappa decided to suck all the blood out of him (inside him was the only place his blood should be for sure). Did these things have real teeth? Would they fake kill him?

"Does anyone want to be my partner?" He promised he'd be useful!!! He just liked his chances better with a team against one fake kappa.

Bella did as instructed, and gathered up her belongings in her bag, and then brought it up front. She looked on like everyone else how the furniture turned into kappas, and felt a slight chill go up her spine. Don't panic she told herself, these are just replicas, and you are a seventh year student with lots of experience. You will do fine.

Bella took a long steadying breath, made sure she had her wand close, and her signed cucumber, and then she went to stand in front of the kappa with a large pink bow around its neck. Unsure why she bowed a little towards the kappa before she took several steps towards it waiting for some reaction. Now what? Was she supposed to toss the cucumber when it moved?

Was she smug that she'd managed to make Professor Khanna laugh? Entirely. And she'd had her own giggles in there too when they had drawn out the preciousss in a way that told her he knew exactly where she had drawn her inspiration from. Once instructions were to put all her belongings in a bag and up towards the front of the class, she scurried to do just that, before wiggling with excitement at the thought of the rest of class.

The Kappas couldn't actually hurt her, Professor Khanna had just assured that, so shouldn't they just have fun with the activity? That was certainly what she intended to do! She wasn't hesitant to work alone, and yet hearing the first year who seemed a little more reluctant she decided there was no harm in partnering either. Approaching the boy in yellow (Brandon) and his selected Kappa, she grinned at him. "I'll work with you!" she could not promise she'd be useful. But she maybe could be fun! Stuffing her cucumber in her robe pocket, deciding to use that last while also seeing how it reacted to the cucumber already thrown, she decided to try to throw in her own theory too. "Why did the fly never land on the computer???" maybe she could work her way to 'What's in my pocket'.

Because... Cucumber.

This was going to be an intersting lesson. Wonder what the real Kappa in the tank thought about these replicas? Are they terroritorial? Would they fight each other? So many questions.... but back to the task at hand.

Making her way over an 'empty' Kappa line with her cucumber in tow. Maxine felt way braver than she ever though she would - something about Defense Against the Dark Arts brought that out in her - just don't ask her to get a broom - her feet were ment to be frimly on the ground... ugh .. once again she got lost in her own thoughts. She needed to focus.

"Hey there Kappa friend" She said out loud - maybe they just needed to be friends. She got an idea to. Maxine took a big courtsey in front of the Kappa - who knows maybe it had manners and would bow back - that would make life easy - keeping her cucumber on the ready in case it didn't like her courtsey and made a move on her. She also had her wand at the ready.
