Muggle Studies Lesson 2: Muggle Hunting

Ah, home sweet Muggle Studies classroom. Jk. Today you are meeting by the lake. Hopefully you remembered. As, er, showing up late has dire consequences this year. Maybe it helps that you're slotted for a later lesson today (an anomaly for Muggle Studies).

Anyway, AnYwAy, ANYWAY.

As you make your way towards the lake at 4 PM, you'll find Professor Finneas Schmoe in all his noodle-y glory, twitching standing in the middle of a field that is marked off by a HUGE circle of traffic cones. Hm. Would you be learning about laws of the road today? Mayhaps. Schmoe looks poorly and has very little energy, but he tries his best to give you an encouraging smile as you make your way towards him. While the Inquisitorial Squad is nowhere in sight, you've come to learn that they're always closeby should you step out of line.

There aren't any chairs or bean bags to sit on so it's clear that you're expected to stand within the coned off circle for the time being. Whilst you're standing around waiting for class to begin, you may notice a fenced off area at one end of the field and a pile of nets and ropes (and a closed box full of things and stuff) behind Schmoe. Errrr.... be sure to mind the mud. It had, er, rained last night but... The Schmoe must go on!

OOC: hello, hello, hello! Fancy seeing you here!! If your character was sent to live in the new accomodations, they would still be present in class (they\'d just have an escort to bring them here, refer to this thread for more information). Please be sure to take a look at the classroom rules and I’ll post in about 24-28 hours to officially start the lesson.

Lesson Progress:
+ Arrivals + Question 1: What are some weaknesses specific to muggles?
+ Responses to Q1 + Question 2: Keeping muggle-weaknesses in mind, how will you proceed if you are to come face to face with violent muggles. What is your plan of attack? Strategy? What spells might be useful?
+ Responses to Q2 + Mini-Activity: Get suited up for a game of Muggle Hunt
+ Final Activity: Muggle Hunt
______+ Activity Update 1
______+ Activity Update 2: 22 hours remain
+ And that's a wrap!

Here is a poorly drawn diagram to help you visualize.
Not drawn to scale & there'd be more trees within the circle.

love that Schmoe is shown as a noodel

Yeah.

Cool.

Lake class.

Aboli found nothing enjoyable for the past couple of weeks. Nothing. There was nothing left in her. No fight, no desire to do magic. It was suffering majorly. She did her essays with about as much gumption as an old broomstick on it's last twig making its final flight. Lessons were terrible, but she was able to see Noah. And all her other friends who were trapped Merlin knew where...down in the bowels of the school.

She gave Schmoe no indication of welcoming. She was tired of all of the professors. She was tired of herself. The word "muggle" made her stomach roll uncomfortably lately, and so Muggle Studies was a class she in particular dreaded.

DaniDiNardo 02-24-2021 01:46 AM

Know what was super hard to do these days? Be late. Having big, burly, absolutely scary men walk you from class to class, you tended to show up on time if not somewhat before time. Gone were the days of the Gryffindor skidding down corridors to beat the time. Now, now she walked at whatever pace was set and showed up when she was meant to.

"Hello, Professor." Emmerson said, coming to a stop somewhere near the man. The lake was a nice change. When most of your none school hours consisted of four bare walls, the little opportunities at changes in series really made a difference.

"You're looking...alive, today."

Alive was good. Alive was all she ever asked for these days. You never knew when someone would wake up dead with these goons.

Cassirin 02-24-2021 02:01 AM

Phoebe was obsessed with polishing her wand, pulling it in and out of her pocket to look it over for any scratch or smudge before tucking it away again... and then repeat it all again a moment later. There was something about not being able to have her wand at hand that made her just want to cling to it all the more when it was handed over for class.

"Good day, Professor," Phoebe brushed hair out of her eyes, not really caring that it was less than it's normal bounteous glory. Not caring that she hadn't been able to smile at the professor, but she'd been polite. Polite had to count for something.

AlwaysSnapesGirl 02-24-2021 02:32 AM

"Hi, Professor," came the quiet greeting from Ivy as soon as she'd arrived. She felt like she was hanging on by a thread these days, though some might have been marginally better than others...but not by much. Today was one of those less good days though, so she didn't even manage a fake smile, her face emotionless.

Finding a spot to stand next to Aboli, she glanced around at the lesson setup, absent-mindedly fiddling with the plait she'd pulled her hair into that morning.

Waddles 02-24-2021 02:40 AM

um yes hi Aboli

ABOLI WAS HERE! Mamie wanted to run to the older girl when she spotted her, but she didn't want to make the guards mad, so. She walked. Like a normal human being, which she definitely was. She walked and walked until she was standing next to Aboli on the opposite side from Ivy, then she stopped walking. Wait. Oh, maybe Aboli didn't want to be seen fraternizing with Muggleborns. Mamie took two steps away from the Slytherin, and gave her a polite nod of to say hi, how are you, save me. As one does.

At least they were having class outside today, which was a very nice change from the gross dungeon room Rosier was keeping the "bad kids" in. She sighed happily but tried not to smile about it. She didn't want Schmoe to get in trouble for treating the Muggleborns to some extra fresh air. Mamie was already looking pale, and she even lived in the basement normally. "Good afternoon, professor," she said. She eyed the traffic cones. What was Schmoe up to?

NiallNIP 02-24-2021 02:46 AM

Quinn trudged up to the class, genuinely just happy to be outside, but hating that he was just happy to be outside. The room, in a word, sucked.

"Hello, Professor," he spat out. He wasn't mad at the Professor, today was just one of his Mad Days. Ever since The Room™, Quinn had been able to split up his days into four sections—Mad Days, Sad Days, Tired Days and Numb Days. Mad Days were his most rare out of the four, but when they happened he was directionlessly frustrated, and any little thing could set him off.

Watson 02-24-2021 02:53 AM

Noah was relieved that they had a class. AND IT WAS OUTSIDE. Being at class meant that he could escape their new living arrangements and see Aboli. He was often consumed with thoughts about how she and the other students were doing...

I forgot what the outside smells like,” he muttered a little loudly to himself before walking over to the Professor and presenting himself with limited emotion. He didn’t have any excitement left to give... He missed his dorm room. He missed his girlfriend. He missed his family. He missed his Hogwarts not this horrible nightmare. “Hello. Afternoon Professor.” he said, glancing at Schmoe for a minute before returning his gaze to Aboli and then back to Schmoe.

Then he headed to wear he could stand without getting anyone in trouble but his eyes were on Aboli the whole time, hoping that she would look over his way. He’d have to find a way to talk to her.... discreetly.

BanaBatGirl 02-24-2021 02:54 AM

anyone can grab a Bernie

There really wasn't much spirit left in old Bernadette Grantham these days. Just a numb sort of vague sadness, which she subtly demonstrated whilst being escorted to and from lessons by kicking pebbles as she walked. A pebble here, a pebble there... one rolled into a traffic cone and stopped.

She joined the others and briefly looked up at Schmoe, giving him a sad and tiny nod, and then back down at the ground.

Bernadette just didn't want to be here anymore. She didn't. She just wanted to go home... like, home, as in the Hogwarts of the 2100-2101 school year. Even though she'd been on dorm arrest and confined to Gryffindor Tower for a good few months, at least back then she'd had her crochet hooks and some yarn and books and a comfy bed and it hadn't been THAT serious of a dorm arrest.

The Room sucked.

pundantic 02-24-2021 03:08 AM

Kale Trent wasn't a ghost anymore. He wasn't floating down the corridors haunted by the DADA lesson and the man he had inadvertently killed by trying Rosier. He wasn't exactly Kale Trent in the before times either. There was something about the Gryffindor that was steely. Determined. Maybe even a lil fool-hardy in the best worst Gryffindor way.

The room had given him something to focus his energy on. And if anyone knew Kale, energy was something he had in spades.

He didn't look good. No no. In fact, he looked very bad. But there wasn't room for being scared about the mounting inevitability of his own doom. He only had a few hours a day to really think with the anonymity of lessons. He wasn't going to waste it.

Kale nodded at Schmoe and dutifully took his seat. If he had his hand on his wand it was only because he had missed it so dearly.

SilverTiger 02-24-2021 03:15 AM

She was numb, but at least that was better than feeling on the verge of crying constantly. That was about all that could be said about Gracelyn as the fifth year had gone to lessons since the courtyard incident. While there had been the chance of a smile before, now it was even more rare if nonexistent. The Hufflepuff was a shell of her normal self, just over dealing with it all, and she had pretty much dragged herself out to the lake for the next Muggle Studies lesson.

The subject just seemed off given everything they had continued to be told, but she wasn’t about to risk whatever punishment might happen if she refused to leave the dorm either. “Hi Professor Schmoe,” she mumbled as she stepped inside the cones, just standing wherever she managed to end up. Did any of it really matter anymore?

PatInTheHat 02-24-2021 03:21 AM

Octavia hadn't been right ever since hearing about what happened in the courtyard. She still smiled at people in the corridors, it didn't appear that she was loosing any sleep, and if you carried conversation with her you wouldn't think she had anyone to fret over. Still, Octavia wasn't quite right ever since hearing about the courtyard.

Her hands in her pocket, she made her way to the lake alone. Did she see her friends? Yes. But the professor got her attention first out of formalities. "Good afternoon, professor." She offered him a kind smile that didn't reach her eyes.

Stopping at her friends she silently let her eyes glance over them. She didn't say anything to them or offer them any false comfort. Once Tavie seemed satisfied she surveyed her surroundings, appearing to assess what this lesson was going to be about.

Felixir 02-24-2021 03:33 AM

The early February cold was whatever. Nem still felt it, this was Scotland after all, and they were still particularly susceptible to it, but at this point they were also largely beyond caring. No hand-crocheted gloves or hat, no cloak or jacket, just their uniform, same as if they were having class indoors. They still had their hands in their pockets though, wand ready and held; wanting to feel the chill was one thing, but it would be stupid to risk losing dexterity and fumbling if they had to cast magic at a moment's notice.

Far too much stupidity going around at the moment already.

Joining the group of students, Nem lingered - as they ever did - on the margins. Nobody got a look or greeting or acknowledgement, nobody but their esteemed professor. The Nem stare Nem gave him was a hard, stony one, and they kept it fixed on his eyes, knowing he wouldn't be able to meet it for long.

"Schmoe."

So courteous. Though they could always think of something else to call him, if he preferred.

LilFox06 02-24-2021 03:43 AM

Valencia appeared fine. The only difference in her life is how much more she read. She'd been pouring over history and psychology for months. She had pages upon pages of notes written in code and in Latin -- just in case. She'd been practicing her spellwork. She looked ready to fight at any given moment.

Quite unlike everyone else who looked exactly the opposite.

"Hello Professor." she said offering a kind smile. Frowns were just showing the other side they were winning. She wouldn't give them the satisfaction.

She then went and stood by a tree. Because there were some around.

Deezerz 02-24-2021 04:32 AM

It was either go to class or die.

Nowadays, that meant very little difference. The only thing that drove Lilith forward was the hope of being reunited with her family again. It was the only thing. Merlin knows there wasn't much left in her.

When she arrived at the lake, the Slytherin did not offer the professor a smile. Instead her ice blue eyes offered all of the resentment that was building up in her. Resentment against the Hogwarts professors for being cowards. For not doing something to help them out. She folded her arms over her chest and kept her cold gaze on him.

Do something, noodle man.

Uncle Moose 02-24-2021 06:26 AM

Lifelessly Moose followed behind Emmerson being escorted to Muggle Studies. There were bags under the bags of his eyes. The perpetual frown on his face was there only because of how little sleep he got. How anyone expected him to function during class or during the permitted hours they were given for their supervised time out of The Room was beyond him.

But he would comply, he had no choice but to.

He didn't even give his favorite Professor a look, let alone a greeting. The Gryffindor in front of him said it all.

So he settled into the class along with everyone else. Happy to be hear, thanks for letting him come. So grateful they're letting him not be dead yet.

Samia 02-24-2021 07:26 AM

Aries ....... was sad.

But was it really a feeling that meant anything when everyone was so sad.

It was the new normal - under the regime of Headmaster RUTHLESS.

A sad ball of blonde, the eleven year old made his way to class and barely smiled at the muggle studies professor before making his way to stand by one Nemesis Upstead. He looked cool, y'know. But - - "you forgot to say 'Professor" he corrected the older student.

"That is considered rude" Or so what his mom would say.

Slowfie 02-24-2021 07:52 AM

Muggle Studies classes weren't exactly his favourite, not with the current curriculum. But that wasn't Professor Schmoe's fault, he knew that much.

Cal quietly walked along with the other kids from the room, choosing to walk next to Bernie this afternoon. He managed the smallest of smiles when he noticed she was kicking pebbles and joined her, choosing one particular pebble to kick along. Almost like playing football with Cel. Except not quite.
At least they got to be outside and enjoy the fresh air a little longer than they were usually allowed.

"Good afternoon, Professor.." Cal said, offering an unconvincing smile.

sweetpinkpixie 02-24-2021 09:49 AM

WHY couldn't Aries keep his mouth SHUT?!

Atlas was tempted to take his bag and whack his brother upside the head for, well, for what he wasn't too sure. But something was eating away at his stomach when it came to Nemesis Upstead these days...ever since the night in courtyard. It was no secret that the older Slytherin had Rosier's favor...and someone in Rosier's favor was NOT the sort that you wanted to talk back to or get on the wrong side of. His brother could do with a hefty reminder about self preservation and what the term red shirting meant, okay?

"Hello, professor," Atlas spoke concisely (on your side ultimately here, Aries).

But Atlas' thoughts were distracted when he saw Quinn and then he was branching off away from his brother to be with his friend. It was...hard...kind of excruciating to be separated like this from people he cared a great deal about. He had, at first, romanticized things a little bit...but the moment he had turned himself and one Phoebe James into Romeo and Juliette...it had killed all desire for the unrequited love. Romeo and Juliette were idiots and Atlas was doing his best NOT to be one of those.

An idiot.

Tiny smile in place, Atlas stood beside Quinn and mouthed a hello to him after nudging with a tiny Gryffindor fist to Ravenclaw wrist.

DuckyLinJi 02-24-2021 11:54 AM

If Minjae had any spirit left in him he would have been excited to have a class at the Lake but there was none of his usual spark in his eyes as he was escorted by the Alliance to get to class. He was used to having guards around when he was in the muggle world but his father’s guards were tasked to protect him, these guards were not.

At least they were given meals and taken outside twice a day while under supervision but it wasn’t the same as walking around freely.

Upon arriving at the Lake , Minjae didn’t bother to look around at the set up. What was the point anyway? He looked up briefly to greet the Professor and as he did so his eyes conveyed a message. Though it did not say 'help us' it said ' Bloody do something you coward'

astrocat 02-24-2021 01:34 PM

Ash stood by nobody. She wasn't broken, but she wasn't okay, either. Oh no, Ash, your education. Your learning and growth. Pay attention. Be engaged. Too bad. People who talked like that clearly had never seen the world. "Schmoe." No professor. She didn't do honorifics, unless they were directed at Rosier. Which meant that nobody was getting honorifics after all of this. In Ash's eyes, authority was the ultimate evil. She didn't care what this lesson was about. Did anyone care? Did it even matter? She stared straight ahead her eyes unfocused, her thoughts unfocused, her mind on one thing. You can't make me care.

FearlessLeader19 02-24-2021 01:44 PM

Whereas some of her classmates' spirits were broken, Claudine's was not. There was still a great deal of anger in her and she was making sure to hold onto said anger. The anger was good; it kept her motivated and going. She kept her head straight as she walked beside Minjae as they were escorted to the Muggle Studies lesson at the Lake.

The Snakette barely looked at the materials there that would no doubt play a part in the topic of the lesson. She simply followed Minjae after casting a glance at Schmoe. Little did she know that she was thinking along the same lines as Minjae: would the Professors not do something to get these lunatics out of their lives??

NiallNIP 02-24-2021 02:13 PM

When Atlas arrived, the fire inside Quinn dampened a bit. If there was one person he couldn't be mad at right now, it was Atlas.

Quinn had to curb his impulse to pounce on Atlas and give him the biggest hug, so he settled for a small smile and worming his pinky around the Gryffindor's, squeezing it tightly.

Kolyander 02-24-2021 03:15 PM

Dahlia's appearance was fair better than it had been previously. Everything from her hair that was pulled back neatly into a braid, down to her clean shoes was on point. That was all that was on point however.

A lesson out by the lake meant nothing anymore. Sorry, Professor but all this was, was another lesson that was only somehow going to break her a little bit more. It didn't much matter where she stood and Lia was perfectly content with standing wherever her feet stopped walking.

"Hello, Professor Schmoe," she greeted quietly. That was it. A small couldn't be managed right now, perhaps some other time when she was given a reason to smile.

MadMadamMalfoy 02-24-2021 07:41 PM

Up until his imprisonment, Heath had kept up a stoic facade, never letting on how much Rosier's cruelty affected him. Now there was no point in acting. All it got him was a one way ticket to a crowded room in the darkest depths of the castle, not because of anything he did wrong but because his father was a bloody muggle! Now he wanted people to see the toll this took on him. He wanted everyone, especially the professors, to see the damage their inaction had done!

He looked at the professor with defeated, lifeless eyes, eyes that had lost all their former light. "Hello, Professor," he greeted, his tone flat and emotionless. Had he not suspected he was being watched, he wouldn't have offered a verbal greeting at all. He didn't feel much like talking anymore. Without another word, he went to stand with Claudine and Minjae, two other people Rosier had blacklisted, and wait for the lesson to begin.
