Muggle Studies Lesson One: I'm gonna mail myself to you
Ready for your first muggle studies lesson of the term? Professor Meredith Moxley is. She's arranged the space so that rows of tables are situated around the room, two chairs at each one. All tables are facing front and the arrangement has put Professor Moxley's desk, and the large floating white board just behind it, directly in your line of sight. She is, after all, the main attraction.
You'll find your professor sitting behind her desk, humming a tune to herself as she fiddles with the bright orange vest she's wearing for this occasion. The zipper in the front appears to be stuck but NO WORRIES, she's got this covered! Why don't you go find a seat and class will be getting started shortly. Oh and don't forget to check out the board! Your first assignment is already up there.

Caleb could only imagine where this lesson was going...who wanted to learn about MAIL? Owls were just so much easier. Sigh. Still, points were points, so...
He raised his hand. "You should probably be social and personable. No one wants a grumpy mailman," he explained. He could only imagine how awkward that would be...

Of course the obvious choice in answer would be patience, but at least a million and three people had mentioned that one already so there was really no point in any repetition. He'd just have to get a little outside of the box- creative for this one.. UM. A strong passion for mail? Would that be an acceptable answer...?
On second thought... Maybe not. that wasn't actually a personality trait even. Okay. Think Zander. Think. "Well you've got to be friendly incase you have to strike up a conversation whilst stuffing mail into mailboxes... Sometimes when I go home I run into the mailman on my walks," it was a probable happening, right? Though... What it had to do with mail exactly... It was a stretch.

Personallty traits....that was a tough one. Well...friendly smile....
"Maybe they would have to be even tempored?" Domino asked. "Because some mail cariors that delivor packages might have to deal with a rude customer?"

So they WERE talking about Muggle Mail then. Huh.
And he'd stayed quiet thus far because his answers were ones that could very easily turn into rants and weren't needed to be heard. Talking about how rubbish the Royal Mail was wouldn't go down well with the Professor, he was more or less sure of it. Besides, there could be a Dima Toussaint in the classroom and there was no way that the Slytherin was gonna end up swearing in front of him.
What kinda personality traits did post-people have to have? Easy. The hand went up in the air. "Someone who's a people person, I bet. There's no point delivering something if you don't know how to talk to someone." Just saying. "And not just that, you gotta be good at talking to a lot of different kinds of people. Some people can be really freaking rude early in the morning and you're the one who's gotta deal with that in a mature way or whatever."
Nobody wanted a grumpy person to deliver their mail? Thank Merlin Grayson wasn't thinking about being a postman, then.
Kace was glad that he got the answer right and he pleased the Professor. He grinned and see he knew something about muggle mail. Now onto the next question. What personality traits do you need to be an efficient mailman? He thought about it and you do need patience and kindness but he had something else up his sleeve. He raised his hand and said,
"Professor I know you need like a problem solving type of brain. Sometimes the mailman could have a package that has the wrong address and it is up to the mailman to know what to do." I mean Kace has gotten wrong packages and mail before that he needed to send back.

Dot really wanted to suggest that the best kind of mailperson would be one that had feathers, but it didn't seem like a good idea to make the professor mad on the off chance she didn't have a sense of humor. Professors this term were very cranky and had trouble laughing, which was a good indicator they all needed more fiber in their diets. Her mum told her so.
Instead, Dot raised her hand and offered, "Maybe someone who likes being outdoors and wants to be moving around a lot on their job? And not prone to paper cuts. Those are the worst!"
"Some one who is patient and kind." Margo said thinking of the uncle she had that delivers mail in the US. "A person must also be physically fit, there is ALOT of walking and some physical labor carrying packages." She said smiling, thinking again of her uncle who walks close to ten miles a day delivering the mail all around.
These answers, these are the ones that had the most to do with what they’d be focusing on for the rest of class. Meredith grinned at each, though she wasn’t as amused with Ms. Greyvson’s performance as the girl probably thought she should be. ”Their hard work really isn’t something to joke about, honestly.” The brunette raised an eyebrow at the prefect and then turned her attention to the rest of the class. ”It is something I would like to discuss further, though. As several of your classmates mentioned, postmen and women work in all kinds of weather conditions and have to deal with both people and, on occasion, neighborhood pets. All of this is done while carrying large bags full of letters and/or large parcels that need to be delivered and most do it with a smile.” Honestly, they did.
”This is a matter of opinion, of course, but can anyone tell me what sort of personality traits would be ideal for a person working in a profession like this?”
This lady totally loved the mailmen. Though Ophelia could totally see why. Slicking through the woods in the mud was a choice the blonde made herself, but if she has to actually DO it for a job, she may have actually died. Or at least lay down in the rain and sleep. The twelve year old was waaaay dramatic like that.
And it wasn't like she was lazy, or hated bad weather. The kid always slinked around the woods in the rain and winter was the perfect time to explore without all of the crazy animals coming to ruin your day. It was also the perfect time to act like you were a warrior slinking through bad terrain on the way to your next battle. That's when she would put her curly hair up in a bun and map like nobodies business.
Raising her hand, the blonde answered.
"They have to be really kind." Because the second year would end up throwing the letters at annoying people. "Ooh and you have to be really fit cause you have to walk from house to house. And determined, cause the winter gets cold and you have to do all of that in the cold. Right?" Which was why Ophelia would never end up working as a mailmen. No matter what her sister said when the kid didn't try in school or got bad grades.

Huh. Well. There were LOTS of traits that someone in a hardworking job like that needed; Dima could go ON and ON and ON. Kind, patient, tolerant, dedicated, driven, diligent, precise, punctual, honest, trustworthy, and MILLIONS of more adjectives. But instead, he just summed it all up in one word:
"AWESOME." Yeah. Yeah! You go, mailmen people! Woohoo! Team Muggle Post! Yeehaw!
Also? "Everything Grayson said, too." Because he was talking some SUPER SMART stuff.
Like always.

As the Professor talked, Lux wrote tons of notes because it was all good and interesting stuff to know. Besides, it might show up on the exam and she needed to be prepared for it.
Ugh, so much studying.
What traits does a mailman need.... After giving it a bit of thought, she raised her hand. "They need endurance because it's a time consuming job that takes a lot of walking and the ability to work in all weather conditions. They need to at least be okay with dogs since they can become aggressive. And they need to be a people person, because they talk to a lot of different people some nice and some rude." There were other things she could think of, but she didn't want to list them all.

Ruby was pretty sure that postie was the kind of job people ended up with and did not actually aspire to. Or at least she hoped that was true of her peers or she would have to rethink her mental rating of a lot of them. People were being too nice and saying to many positive things that she thought seemed more of a result of the job than a requirement for it. What about unmotivated to get a better job? Unskilled manual labourer? Dog chow? Unfortunate shorts with socks and sandals wearer? Possible nosy parker who might read your personal correspondencerer? No she wasn't exactly impressed by the notion of this particular muggle job, and the face she made, which was rather like she had smelled something unpleasant, made that clear enough.
Plz. No. No future husband, boyfie, friend, or associate of HERS would be a postie. Thanks for your application but no thanks.

Hmm. Okay, so the dangers of being a postal worker would be today's topic. Kate had never thought about the job that way. She'd just always assumed it was a lot safer than what the magical owls had to do. She tried to come up with something to say, and when she did, she raised her hand. "I think you have to be a really fierce person to be a postal worker," she said. "Putting up with all those dogs and the harsh weather? That doesn't sound like a job for the faint at heart."
It also didn't sound like a job for Kate. She didn't think she'd like to ride around and visit everybody's house in the whole neighborhood and have to put up with their pets, too. She just liked to be on the receiving end of the whole mail business.

Personality traits?
Gabriel blinked up at the professor and then down at his notes. As far as THOSE went, he was a poor judge of what was ideal and not....being an anxious person himself. Some good answers had already been given...patient, tolerant, stamina...Though, technically speaking, stamina wasn't part of ones personality...but a physical characteristic. Sociable and cheerful had been mentioned, too. Well, was anyone ever cheerful about having to travel in all sorts of weather to deliver packages?
Heh. Gabe wasn't convinced.
He didn't have a thing to say this go around, thanks.

Muggle Studies Lesson 1: Muggle Mail
Why do we study muggles? The need to blend in: When needing to coexist with society, we wouldn't want to raise suspicion by not knowing what the simplest of 'muggle' items are. [Kate Addison] The need to trade: Muggles make important materials like zippers/buttons and grow crops that witches and wizards would need to survive; clothing, food, etc. [Amur Neverwinter] To gain tolerance: To more efficiently coexist with what you can better understand. [Tobias Tempus] To feel grateful: To better appreciate the power we have and to better understand the muggle struggle without things that make our lives more convenient. [Caleb Newell] Relationships:...because friendships/love? often blur the lines between muggles and our kind. [Dima Toussaint] To be more efficient: To know when it's right to use magic for something and when it right to just carry on in the muggle way of things. (i.e. when there isn't a spell and/or magic to carry out a certain task) [Ruby Banner]
How does MUGGLE MAIL work? Stamps and envelopes are used.
They have to pay a fee.
They do not use owls, but person to person delivery.
They have their mail delivered at different speeds depending on the class of stamp/fee.
There is a sorting process before mail goes out (which makes it take longer)
Muggles take days off, meaning their mail doesn't run on certain days/holidays. This differs from country to country.
Sometimes addresses are written incorrectly or someone has moved from one place to another, meaning the mail system must 'return to sender'.
Different countries abide by different customs laws.

Norah copied down all the new information in shimmering ink, taking a break in her stamp drawings to look up and grin at Professor Moxley. Once she was finally finished writing everything down, she looked up again to hear that most answers to the next question had already been covered. Patience, physical fitness, charisma....all already said. UMM. The third year bit her lip and wracked her brain for something creative to say. Struck with sudden inspiration, she put her hand in the air and offered, "They probably can't have bad allergies, if they're outside and around dogs all the time." Boom. Nailed it.
Beverly wiggled her nose slightly. More from her own opinions than anything else. She wouldn't think landing a job as a post-person was something someone got prepared for, she thought it was something they had to do because it was a job and it paid. Who would want to deal with extreme weather and rabid pets? Seriously? Was that something people actually CHOSE to do? It sounded like a brave thing to do if you HAD to. Muggles.
"Perseverance," she volunteered, raising her hand. "I would figure it'd take someone with enough determination to work through unpredictable weather, pets and strangers, and deal with that in a day-to-day basis. You could push your body to trek through all this but you also need the mind power to do so." Mind and body teamwork.
Angel looked at the Professor and raised her hand. "The kind of person you would ideally need, is someone who is smart and who is patient with all different kind of people." Angel stopped to get her breath. "I also think that they should be friendly and helpful because some people might need that extra help and you should always give the customer the best service you can." Angel stopped there she could have gone on and on but decided against it because she didn't want to get into trouble for talking too much.
"Yeaaah. I don't know professor, you have to be like a really sweet patient person to do this job." Noel said but felt confused because he didn't know why would a person be like this. "But why would you want to do such a job though professor?" he asked, really wondering what kind of hardships a person may have to want to have a job so tiring.

Finn was going to answer with something along the lines of what other classmates had said, endurance, fitness, strength. But, since he'd taken some time it was too late now to answer and give the Professor an explanation she's already heard. So at this point he just continued listening on.

Janelle found the discussion interesting because she never thought about all the little details related to mail. She took notes and tried to keep up with the important parts of the conversation. When the next question was asked, Janelle raised her hand. She had an answer ready and was anxious to share it.
"A mailman would need to be friendly because they have to deal with people a lot. They have to be brave because you never know what you might run into. And, this isn't really about personality, but they should be in good shape because they do a lot of walking."

SEE? THE NEW PROFESSOR LIKED STAMPS, TOO! Honestly, though Eden's mam was a muggle, there were a lot of things she didn't know much about. Like post. Eden hadn't sent a proper letter in....FOREVER. Because normally they DID use owl post...her dad preferred it. It was faster...and you didn't NEED to know an address if you had the right owl.
So she was taking LOTS of notes about all of this. It was so....cool.
She also didn't think she'd EVER want to be a post person. NOPE. Deal with meanieheads all the time? As if. Eden would cry aaaalllll the time. She raised her hand once more. "You have to be able to remain calm in case a person whom your delivering to or something else happens to interfere with the mail giving." Yes. Having a clear head.
It might also be best if postmen/women didn't have families. Because they had to work even on holidays, right? So yeah. But she didn't say that aloud. It was kind of SAD.

Puck didn’t know nor would she have cared that Professor Moxley wasn’t fond of her performance. She wasn’t joking though that was why she raised her eyebrow back at the Professor – her own uncle had worked in the post office she wasn’t joking about their work ethic. ”I’m not joking about it,” she grumbled before sitting up straighter. “Sorry Professor Moxley but I wasn’t joking about their work ethic, their work ethic is commendable considering many town’s have postal carriers that walk from house to house and even at times they have to run from rogue dogs.” She wasn’t joking.
What personality traits would make a good postman? Or woman? Puck thought for a minute before raising her hand again. “I’m not sure if it’s a trait exactly but someone that likes physical activity and enjoys being active as they would have to carry the parcel bags around and I have heard that those can be rather heavy.” Really. What did people put in those letters anyway?

Tap-tap-tapping his quill on the desk, Toby needed a moment to try and concentrate and think for a few minutes to try and summon up an answer, but he was finding it more difficult than it should have been. Uhhh... okay. He had this. When something that more or less made sense sprang to mind, he raised a quill-twirling hand.
"It'd be helpful if they liked doing the same thing over and over again, 'cause of the route they go and the routine of everything, but could also be prepared for anything else that might happen. Like a freak blizzard in mid-July or a bunch of angry hornets chasing them or whatever." Because it WAS that kind of job, where anything could happen but most of the time it would be totally routine. "And they'd need to be super trustworthy, 'cause mail is usually important and private and personal. You need to know that someone who's bringing that to people's doors can be trusted." Which, y'know, Toby didn't think would be a problem. He couldn't think of a single person that he knew today who he wouldn't trust to bring him a note or letter or package without opening or stealing it. But he figured it was still a suitable answer, even if a little redundant 'cause OF COURSE nobody would do such a thing anyway.

Ideal traits?
Hmmmm.
"Probably some form of determination definitely," David said, raising his hand. "Dealing with all kinds of weather and animals and people, you've gotta be pretty determined if you don't give up halfway through." Which he would probably do if he was somehow stuck in that sorta job. Who wanted to spend their time doing something as boring as delivering letters and dealing with territorial dogs? Not David, that was for sure.

Echo was so confused, she didn't really know what was going on and learning about Muggles was really heard for her because her whole family were witches and wizards. Instead of answering questions she had no clue of the answers she listened and took notes of what the students were saying. Alot of them seemed pretty smart.
