Default of Professor Culloden

As you enter the room, the first thing you see in the middle of the room is a hand-made Turkish carpet and nothing else. To the immediate right of the door stands a coat hanger for four coats a time, and you are expected to hang your coat there before fully entering the room. Professor's desk and two chairs in front of it are located at the right end with three pictures hanging from the wall, and his bookcase and 'emergency potions' shelves with a representational potion brewing set are located at the left end of the room. The walls are painted light blue.

The desk and visitors' set look expensive, and they indeed are. They are from genuine mahogany, all cut from the same wood. There is usually a big pile of papers hastily arranged at the farther side of the desk, and you will always see a potion phial and a book on the more organised side. Behind it is his office chair, and in front of it are two comfortable looking armchairs with a coffee table between them. You'll find a bowl of sweets that is filled with cheering up potion that will last for approximately three hours. Go on, take a cherry, apple, orange or lemon flavoured. Be careful not to take the last lemon though, because they are his favourite.

To the right side of the wall behind the desk hangs a picture depicting a Mardin, Midyat house with smiling kids sometimes singing a song and sometimes playing a game. To the left is a painting depicting Afghanistan with an old wizard at the centre of it. He is brewing a mysterious potion and will be more than happy to speak to you in Persian, but he just smiles upon asking about what he is doing. He was a respected wizard of Afghanistan, and Professor Culloden paid a fortune for the painting, so act accordingly. Beneath them in the middle hangs a picture of Borneo rainforests with birds and insects. If you are lucky, you will be treated with a birds lullaby and if you are unlucky, the insects will drill your brains with their buzzing sound.

The middle is only occupied by a handmade Turkish rug. While you may step on it, you will land yourself in detention faster than you can say 'potion' if those shoes are muddy or wet.

At the other end of the room is a bookcase full of books about potions, both muggle and magical plants and animals. Don't be surprised if you see your professor's name on 3-4 of them. Depending on how much he likes you, he may lend them to you.

On the shelves next to the bookcase stands his golden, representational potions brewing set and a few phials full of different potions. Along with the carpet and pictures, the set is his most prized possession.

If you can find him in his office, you are 'okay' to pay a visit.

A second or two later, the man himself arrived and his glance alone could kill. It was very obvious this night wasn't his best. He spared only a glance for her. It was probably the first time he was so angry in front of her either, and he didn't even say a word but proceeded to open his door. His manner wasn't inviting at all, but he waved his hand for her to come in as he was entering his office.

If it was any other student, he would have barked them to be gone, but it was Tiny. She had a talent for calming him down.
She didn't mind waiting, really, but the silence from behind the door made her think he wasn't there. He always let her in, didn't he? Even when he was at his grumpiest? She chewed on her lower lip softly, fearing for the first time that something was actually really truly wrong - either he had gotten fired, or had some sort of emergency, or he was dead behind the door. She was weighing her options - whether she should bust the door down or go straight to the Headmistress and ask her what was going on - just as she heard footsteps in the distance. Okay. So... that must've been him, right?

It was. And she started to smile when the figure got close enough that she could identify the figure as Culloden, but her expression turned morose upon realizing the man's body language and expression were not the least bit positive. That... was a little bit heartbreaking. Sophie wasn't sure she'd ever seen him so unhappy.

Stepping off to the side to let the man through, she started to say, "I can come back tomorrow, if you want," but he was waving her inside. Without a word. So... that was further discouraging, but she obliged, moving into the office and standing far off to the side so he could go wherever he wanted and do whatever he wanted without her being in the way. She stayed standing, though, in case he wanted hugs or something.

After a long moment of silence, Sophie very, very lightly inquired, "D'you... wanna talk about anything?" As she spoke, she opened her bag of sweets and held it open to him. Nearly the entire inventory from Sugarplums was inside. "Or you can have some sweets. Or both. Or neither. The feast was boring, just so y'know, you didn't miss a thing, though Bellaire and Tillstorm had a row. Thought one'd end up killing the other." Would that make him feel any better?

After he was inside, he didn't turn back to see whether she had entered or not, but simply went to his table to see if everything was as he left them, since he hadn't had the time to lock his door. It was. Good. So, turning to head towards his 'emergency' potions, however, he saw and heard her (it was very likely he wouldn't hear but his own beating heart for a while). His hand froze mid-air and he blinked at her - what she said had apparently caught him off-guard.

"Row?" His hand turned direction and headed towards the bag to grab a few (as many as it fitted his hand, actually). Without looking at what he was eating, he tore the paper open and threw the sweet as whole into his mouth.

He was all ears.

Sophie was very visibly concerned, but she tried to keep a fairly calm demeanor, knowing it wouldn't help the prideful man if she tried coddling him like a toddler. If he wanted to talk, he would, and if not, it was probably best to just move on.

So when his curiosity piqued at the mention of the professors' conflict, Soph managed to smile and shrug. "Yeah. Couldn't hear all of what was happening, but from what everyone else was sayin', it seems like Bellaire was tryin' to discipline a Slytherin and Tillstorm didn't like that, was all up in arms 'bout the professor intervening where she didn't belong 'cause BELLAIRE isn't the Head of House, SHE is, y'know?" Merlin knew how protective that Head of House was of her students. "And from what I could tell, Bellaire didn't like having her methods or whatever questioned, 'specially in front of all the students, so they were both like... really defensive and snippy with each other and," she shrugged, "m'surprised no one died." Considering how head strong both of the women were, really.

"Too bad, though, right?" That no one died? Ha. It was a joke, see? She kept the bag open in her arms in case Culloden needed more sweets, considering the way he gobbled up the first thing he grabbed. Super considerate of her.

......he grabbed and ripped another sweet......and another......

It might have got a big annoying for Sophie, though, since she was trying to tell something here and all he did was looking at her far too intently and chewing hurriedly as if she'd take them away if he was too slow. He turned abruptly away when she finished speaking and crossed his room in long strides to grab a napkin from his table. He wiped his mouth, not bothering to wipe it as neatly as a lady either but as if he was a commoner, made it into a ball and left it on his table.

He was still far too angry to laugh, but his manner showed he was amused. "M'not surprised this happened," he said, "Tillstorm doesn't like anyone, no wonder she spoke her mind." Cosgrach was no fan of the woman, it was as clear as the sun on a bright day, and he wasn't the one to soften his words just because he was talking to a student.

"Too bad I wasn't there to see it." He looked thoughtful then and got lost looking at his precious rug, but it was a short phase. Soon enough, he was saying "I won't bite ya, you can come closer and sit if y'wanna." He wasn't in any mood to let her sit in his throne, though, so he went and sat there.

Soon enough, he was saying "I won't bite ya, you can come closer and sit if y'wanna." He wasn't in any mood to let her sit in his throne, though, so he went and sat there.

Soph looked away politely as Culloden did his manly things of eating without shame and cleaning up his face, but she stole glances at him until he seemed to be finished. "She doesn't, yeah. Unless you're a Slytherin student, I think," from what Sophie had observed, at least. "I think you'd be a better Head of House than her." Just so he knew. Didn't hurt to try to butter him up, did it?

At the suggestion that he wouldn't bite, Soph forced brief, light laughter, but she still knew better - he was sensitive with negative emotions right now and anything she said or did could set him off. So. She'd still tread lightly. "Okay." The Ravenclaw did sit, and she did her usual curling up in the armchair - but it was a little strange that he chose to sit in his chair instead of the one next to her. He'd never done that before - they'd always sat together, like two friends talking instead of a professor discussing business with a student.

The discomfort and uncertainty about the whole situation might have shown in her eyes, but she offered him a smile nonetheless, just... looking at him. A little awkwardly. She'd come to find out where he'd been, but he didn't seem to want to talk about it, and she'd already told him about the feast and what he missed... and he already knew all about her summer... sooooooooo...

...

The usually talkative fourteen-year old just sat there, smiling uncomfortably at her mentor and racking her brain for something... anything...????

"Did you hear about Adi and Ethan? FOURTH YEAR prefects. Pfffffft. I love Ethan, he's a great guy, but if any of us fourth years shoulda been prefected before the usual fifth year, it should've been me." Her tone was very playful and sarcastic in a poor attempt to distract Culloden from whatever was plaguing him, but certainly the man knew she was a little serious, too. "I mean, okay, Ethan's a spot-on choice, honestly, but why FOURTH YEAR ADI when Tobes is a FIFTH YEAR Hufflepuff boy who's perfect in every way and can do anything and would be debatably the best prefect the whole world's ever seen??? Explain THAT one." He couldn't, could he?

But maybe she was a little biased.

He really wanted to leave, this whole thing was stupid anyways and if his parents hadn't threatened with not being able to play outside whenever he got home for the summer he didn't have much choice. On the other hand he was also the type who hated backing down from something so when the door swung open , Kevin looked up , expecting to see the potions professor but no one was there.

Seeing the professor sitting on one of the chairs, Kevin walked towards one of the smaller chairs and of course without asking if he could sit he sat down. "We" he said as he took off his hat "Need to talk"

Was it the draft that opened his door, or was it the man’s doing? With brows furrowed, Ethan decided to take a peek. He wasn’t sure what he’ll find seeing that it was going to be his first time in his office.

Knock, knock.

The door was already ajar, but Ethan still knocked twice before pushing it a bit, and allowed his head inside. “Professor? Are you in…” Ethan trailed off as he saw the man on his chair, obviously not in the mood. The blond boy felt a knot form inside his stomach, obviously guilty about disturbing the potions master one day after the feast, but then his door opened for him apparently. So...does that mean he's welcome to come inside? Culloden may be a master when it comes to masking his state, but the way he carried himself at that moment told Ethan something was amiss. "Hi." he said as he sheepishly grinned at the man. "Is this...a good time to visit you, or...should I go?" Because if not, he'd be more than happy to return to the Snakes' Pit.

Cosgrach didn't even hear the knocking as he was busy hoping it was someone he liked. And... it was. He nodded at the boy once, but couldn't return the smile. Ethan would understand it, though, as evidenced by his question. The older man waved his hand to invite him in.

"You may come," he said and gestured at the chairs in front of his table, "please." He got up too, and sat at a chair - he didn't like having a table between himself and the person that came to talk.

...well?

Cosgrach felt the heavy mood in the room - how he put the table between them for the first time and her anxious glances - but he chose to ignore it and return her glances with a questioning one of his. And anyway, if she wanted to know why he missed the feast, she should ask -

...

First, his left eyebrow was raised; then the sides of his eyes were wrinkled and the next second, he was grinning and shaking his head to himself.

"Someone's passionate about her boyfriiieeeend," he sang in his terribly manly voice, "and also ambitious. But you've got to admit, Jasmine's better than you." He winked, albeit his mind was still clearly on something else. "I honestly can't see what's so perfect about Tobias. If anything, Adi's conversation is better, he's more social and has better grades too." He shrugged and started looking at her curiously to hear what she would say.

Hehehe. Hehe. He.

"The Headmistress is waiting me for a meeting," he said softly before he let her speak. You could say he was politely dismissing her. "Shall we walk together until second floor?" So you must say he wanted to speak to and tease her. He just had to be a responsible professor now.

A perfect way to start the year. First, he'd missed the Feast due to a terrible night. Now he was visiting him.

Cosgrach let out a very stressful breath through his nose and watched the boy. He didn't say anything when he sat down, was even pleased when he took his hat -

...no.

Cosgrach raised both of his eyebrows, but it wasn't in shock. It was OBVIOUSLY in anger and his face grew threateningly pale, only to turn to scarlet as blood rushed to his brain.

"One more disrespectful behaviour, and we'll have a nice detention." Clear as that.

Now... "What would you like to discuss?"

Ethan hesitated for a moment, before stepping inside his office. The boy has strong observation skills, and he assumed that Professor Culloden was just being considerate at the moment. The man has a good heart, and he wouldn’t just kick the fourth year out just like that. Well, maybe he will at some point, but not without a good reason. Ethan closed the door behind him, and briefly glanced around his office. There were so many things that he wanted to see, but Culloden’s current mood definitely sucked all of Ethan’s attention.

It looks like the man needed someone to talk to?

The fourth year stood in the middle of his office as he watched the man stand up to move to his visitor’s chair. Ethan grinned at his professor as he offered him a seat, and waited for the man to settle in before sitting down himself. “I would like to discuss some concerns with you, professor, but…I’m rather concerned about…you.” He said as he eyed the man in front of him. “Is…everything all right sir? I didn’t see you at the feast last night.” Ethan momentarily forgot about the weight of his badge, as he waited for the man to speak. He can’t possibly discuss his own worries, when his adviser’s got issues himself. "...I hope you don't mind me asking."

Something was definitely up, seeing that Culloden did not return his grin earlier.

See. That right there. That look of pure anger, the threateningly pale face that the Professor made. THAT was why he liked to be rude. Because it was just funny. And no, it didn't scare him one bit as he was pretty amused with himself for being able to anger to man within the five seconds he got in the room.

He casually leaned back in his chair and looked around the office and he had to admit, it looked pretty cool. Atleast there was no pink... He turned his gaze back when he talked.

Ah, disrespectful behaviour. As if he could do a better job than the Headmistress herself. And look at him, he was still the same. "We both know a detention doesn't scare me nor will it *change* me" unless they came up with a really good plan which he doubted haha! "Besides, that was hardly disrespectful, i just said we needed to talk" seriously, grown ups were weird. Even Flailsteed who had been cool about his behaviour before was acting weird towards him. He suspected that the staff knew about his "behaviour" or whatever that meant.

"Alright then i'll just cut right to the chase. I don't want to be here but i have to...for MY own good" which was true. "First of all i ap.......apolog......" uuugh he couldn't even SAY that word. He took a deep breath through his nose. "Apologize" ewwww... "for what i did these past few years" He didn't mean those words, not one bit. But if that meant that he could go play outside again at home he would do it. And he had to try get on his good side for the next question. "Also, how does one become a potioneer?" are there tests? uni's? pure luck? what?

The moment Culloden started in his teasing, sing-song voice, Soph crossed her arms, rolling her eyes and doing her best to look unamused.

............But Jasmine's better than you?

Even though she knew he was "joking," that struck a sore spot - in fact, everything he said from then on did and got worse, and Soph tried not to let it show - she tore her gaze away from his and instead appeared far too transfixed on one spot on the ground, letting him finish out his whole ramble before she even considered speaking again.

She could take his teasing. But when there was some truth behind what he was saying, and she KNEW he wasn't just talking nonsense - Jasmine had earned more points than her last term, but that didn't say anything about leadership qualities or heart, and it was true that Tobes didn't have the best of the best grades, but that wasn't HIS fault! Toby was TOTALLY social! And conversed like a champ! And he WAS perfect to her!

Sophie wanted to yell at him. Scold him for being out of line. Make him feel like a bully. But she was still aware of the state he had been in when he first approached the office - the most angry she'd ever seen him - and she wasn't sure that any criticism of him would even make a difference right now. It'd probably just add to his bad mood. Maybe he didn't mean to be a jerk. Maybe it was just his bad mood clouding his judgment.

Still, she wasn't going to entirely let him insult her and Tobes.

She could've taken insults directed solely at herself. But going after Tobes was where he crossed the line.

"Because you're in a foul mood," she began, speaking matter-of-factly as she closed her bag of sweets and slung it over her shoulder, "I'm gonna give you the benefit of the doubt that you didn't think through how that would come across and let ya live." Careful choice of words there so he'd both realize he was being a jerk and how it affected her, but also sort of making it not come across as harshly by teasing about letting him live. "B'you're gonna have to walk by yourself." Yep, she was headed for the door and leaving without him.

If Cosgrach could feel something positive now, it would have been gratitude and praise for the boy. The way he asked whether the older man needed an ear and how concerned he looked moved Cosgrach, but he simply forced himself to smile and shook his head.

"Everything isn't alright, but they will be," he politely said. Clearly he didn't believe that, but he didn't want Ethan to worry about him, so the boy should take the hint. "I had some matters to attend to. I came late in the night." That was all he was going to say. "Thank you for your concern, though." Now his smile looked genuine. "Let's hear about your concerns and see how I can help."

He put on a brave face for him, because he deserved it. He was all ears.

"Also, how does one become a potioneer?" are there tests? uni's? pure luck? what?

...

......you know what? Cosgrach was DONE trying to rationalise with this insufferable git. He had tried being nice, he had tried threatening, he had even spoken to his head of house - who accused him of being too sensitive because she hadn't seen such behaviour from the boy. The boy was clever, Cosgrach had to admit. He had beaten Cosgrach so far, but Cosgrach was better and he would win this war.

So he listened to what he had to say. He was... touched with the apology, but he wasn't impressed. He didn't believe him. He was just doing it because -

Ah.

Cosgrach would have smirked his meaniest, but he was too angry to do that. Instead, he only said "So is this your game, now? You came to apologise, because you want to become a potioneer and need me?" He laughed evilly. "I'm not buying it. The apology. I can teach you all I know," which was a lot, if only Kevin glanced at the library and see the voluminous books he had written, "but you know what? I'm tired of you and I just don't feel like wasting one second of my time for you outside the classroom." Because he had to teach him during class, but outside it? He didn't think so. He shrugged casually and almost dismissively. Sure a detention wouldn't serve anyone any good, but denying the boy his dreams?

Sweeter than chocolate frogs.

......walk by himself?

Cosgrach wasn't expecting this. None of it. It has never occurred to him that she would be so heartbroken and leave him there. He didn't even have anything to say, so he didn't. He let her leave, cursed loudly and left for Annie's office.

Well. At least he smiled, even if it was just wee. Ethan was at the point of convincing himself that Culloden had a rough night last night due to some physical discomfort, such as a headache…but it seems that the man’s got something big on his shoulders.

…and without even taking a pause to breathe, Ethan’s judgment was confirmed. Culloden missed the feast because there was something else that needed his attention, and whatever it is…didn’t turn out well. Ethan sat there, recording everything that he was saying at the moment. He somehow had a feeling that he will be needing that information in the future. Hopefully not too soon? The assurance that Culloden offered did help the boy somehow, but he wasn’t completely sold by this, thus the worried expression remained on his face. “Professor, if you need a friend to hear you out, you know where to find me. I still owe you, you know.” And maybe he’d spend a lifetime giving it back to him.The blond boy gave him a weak grin.

Now, it was his turn.

Ethan let out a sigh and rested his hands on his knees, looking at the floor. “Well, good news is…it’s not about dad.” At that point, the blond boy couldn’t care less now that he’s got other things in mind. “…it’s about this bad boy right here.” He said as he looked up at the potions master, and pointed his shiny badge. “I’m not sure I can do this.” he paused and bit his lip as he considered Healer Murdoch's reaction if she ever finds out that he was having reservations.

It was such a shame that the Professor didn't fell for his fake apology. But at least he had tried. And it didn't matter he had other ways of getting what he wanted. Sometimes he wondered why the hat sorted him in Gryffindor and not Slytherin... Maybe it saw something brave worthy in him? mweh.

Also, it was a shame that Bentley was gone. And now that Flailsteed was his Head of House he had to get on good terms with that guy now so that if *someone* went to him with a note of his behaviour , he would be defended again. Ah yes, he had it all planned out. Too bad it wasn't working so far, he didn't like Flailsteed either because he still had his hat! Atleast he had liked Bentley so there was no acting to be nice.

WOW.... he caught up with his plan pretty fast. Kevin was impressed and it was shown on his face as he looked at the potions professor. "Who said it was for me?" he grinned but knew he couldnt fool him so he added a "Yeah okay, it was for me"

Although on the outside he pretended he didn't care that he didn't get help, on the inside he was a bit worried. He DID want to become a Potioneer. Just because he didn't like the Professor didn't mean he had to dislike the subject right? The boy let out a sigh after the man said he was tired of him and he shook his head lightly. "I'm bad at apologising. I hate it in fact. But at least i tried right? Well, okay i admit it was for my own good but come on! You would have done the same thing if you were in my shoes!" he said.

Realising that he wasn't getting anywhere this time, Kevin stood up from the seat but didn't walk away just yet. "Alright then, fine! I don't need your stupid help anyways" But although he said those words, his voice was slightly different and his expression was a bit worried but then he quickly changed it in to his*whatever* face.

"You don't have me anything," he said softly, and meant it too, "You just be fine and I'll be happy." But he wasn't very happy now, so Cosgrach stood straighter (as if he hadn't been, before) and tried to give all his attention.

Not his dad? Great. Bad boy..? Cosgrach wasn't really...

...oooooh...

This was a problem, yes.

Cosgrach bit his lip and cocked his head to one side.

"Alexa Cambridge was like you too," he said, "and it took her 4 professors to convince she can do it. Now look which badge she is wearing." He paused again. This wasn't an encouragement, he could feel it. Ethan might as well say 'She's Alexa, I'm Ethan.' Cosgrach wasn't on his day at all. "It had taken me 6 while I was Head Boy. Because, I was this terrible bully only two years ago. But I wasn't terrible. I'm not in the hall of shame, at least. No, such a hall doesn't exist, and it doesn't exist for a reason: The professors know who are badge-material, and chosen prefects carry their duties out well. You are badge-material. We all have faith in you, and you've got to admit, such experienced group of people can't be all wrong." Yeah? "You can come rant to me if you're fed up, but don't you ever think you're incapable, again. Just this sensitivity and worry that you're incapable shows you care enough, and will do your best to carry it out."

Yeah?

Yeah?

As long as he’s under the watchful eye of the Hogwarts Staff, Professor Culloden need not worry. Ethan wanted to point it out to the man that he wasn’t the one who actually needed immediate help, but the man who was across him. The blond boy was itching to tell him those things, and tell his friend that he needs some watching out for, too. Ethan looked on as his thoughts swirled inside his head. Maybe he should ask one Sophie Brown to help him watch Culloden’s back, or maybe ask her if he could join?

Ethan did not respond to him about not owing him anything. The boy knew better than him this time, and decided not to argue. It will be pointless, anyway. So instead, he gave him a nod and a grin as acknowledgement.

And…yes, he knows about Lex. He’d heard things about the current Head Girl doubting herself, to the point of hiding her badge inside her trunk. Ethan however, will not do that. In fact, he was wearing his badge loud and proud, however, the weight can sometimes be burdensome to the boy. Sure, it was too early in the Term to assume things, but Ethan can go paranoid over it seeing it as a HUGE honour to helm his fellow Snakes alongside Beverly. “I know what you mean, professor. It’s just that…I’m leading a House with a huge reputation…” Ethan trailed off, as his own sorting last term hunted him for a few seconds. Even the Sorting Hat doubted him. “…I’m not sure if I’m cut-out for this role, seeing that the Sorting Hat from last term had a hard time placing me in my current House. That was enough for me to doubt myself, and my role. I mean…really? Me?” It could have been, Simon…or Grayson even! “…and isn’t this unusual? I get to be one of the House captains a year younger than what is customary.” HOW will he even get the respect of his older peers, yeah? Ethan sat back and rested his head on the chair’s backrest.

Concerns…he’s got them.

Be a bit polite. Kevin scoffed at those words and turned his gaze away from the man. Not only was the Professor visibly getting angrier even Kevin was. It wasn't that he was getting angry because of his talk about being polite or at least trying to. He had heard that a million times now. No, his playful grin was fading away and his eyes narrowed because of his other words. . "Shu---" he took a deep breath. "........I'm not scared" he said through gritted teeth as he made fists of his hands and clenched them tightly as his eyes started to water. He wasn't crying , but holding it in bravely.

He knew that his mother had been wrong. Even if he "genuinly" apologised to him he knew that he would never help him out. But...this WAS his future. If he walked out of that door right now he could basically say goodbye to his potioneer career forever. He HATED it that he was right and that Kevin needed those old cows. He hated this so much and it made him even more frustrated. And confused.

He looked at the door and back. If he walked out, the potions professor would win. If he stayed...the old man would win as well. He....he had lost..for now. Realisation hit him like a train and he sat back down while running a hand through his black hair.

"Even if i were polite you wouldn't have helped me right?" he asked. "Look, i know i'm a pain, trust me i know. I just don't know how to be polite okay? You just saw it. Just....i really want to become a potioneer...i really really want to and i really need advi....." he didn't finish his sentence but instead got up from his seat. "Nevermind" He turned around and walked to the office door. "I'm .......sorry to have bothered you" and he left. He had to find a different way to get to his goal.

Cosgrach's forehead was creased with concern as he listened to Ethan. He waited until he was done - knowing very well he had to get everything out of his chest - and shook his head in the end.

"First of all, I don't even know how, but that Hat's the wisest thing I've ever seen." He was talking in a matter-of-fact voice that should leave no place to doubt what he was saying. And he wasn't just speaking either, he wouldn't do that to Ethan. "If it gave you the option of Slytherin - even if it took it an eternity to offer that - it means you are a snake." He paused then and took a deep breath. "So what if you feel you are friendlier and nicer than everyone in that house? So what if you doubt the sly part in you? You've got the ambition, don't you? You want to be a terrific prefect, so that means ambition. You are actually sly, because you came to me instead of Cece - who would surely have been much harsher with her words. See, I found two traits right away without even thinking. You are a true snake; you are responsible, friendly enough and is the best person to wear that badge."

If he still had doubts... Cosgrach didn't know what else he could say.

But...this WAS his future. ..oh?

Cosgrach almost DARED him to finish that, but Kevin wisely didn't. Cosgrach was also a bit touched that he had the decency to FEEL something, like anger. It was still a feeling and different than 'I'm better than anyone else,' attitude. Interesting indeed. Maybe, just maybe, he should -

Kevin was speaking. Cosgrach let him finish, and opened his mouth to answer -

But then Kevin was gone.

No, he didn't feel happy, but he felt accomplished. He had accomplished to break Kevin, and was pleased to see the boy had a human side. It was just a few thousands layers deep, but it didn't matter.

Grabbing a parchment and quill, he began to write.

If he still had doubts... Cosgrach didn't know what else he could say.

Ethan wasn’t sure if he can agree with Culloden about the Sorting Hat. He started out in Hogwarts pretty late, so the legend, the myth, and the truth behind that magical object was still tainted with Ethan’s doubts. The Sorting Hat may be wiser than Healer Murdoch, but she was definitely much kinder. The prefect was sure that Culloden has never witnessed how Cece was towards Ethan. Or that they must have had an encounter, leading to a sour relationship? All Ethan knows is that Cece treats him like her own, which makes the boy feel very humbled. The fourth year remained silent as he considered the potions master’s words.

Ambitious? Sure, he can be one. He wanted to be the FIRST detective auror in the Wizarding World. He will do his very best to accomplish that task. But sly? He is, but not just because he came to see Culloden and not Murdoch. “I came here to seek advice from you sir, because you are my friend,” it was the truth. “And I trust you as much as I trust my family.” Pause. “If you can still call them family.” Ethan rubbed his eyes with his palms, clearing his thoughts and at the same time digesting what the man said to him. “I guess stereotyping is my enemy.” Right? He has been questioning his place and position in Slytherin for so long, as he looked at his cousin, father, and grandparents. They all fit in, and was perfectly cut out to be a Snake. Ethan continues to struggle to break out of that mould, but he was glad to have found good friends in school, including professors like Culloden.

Ethan looked around the potions master’s office, as more questions popped in his brain, but then his gaze eventually landed on the man before him. “Are you sure there’s nothing I can do to help you, sir?” He can go brew some tea if he wants! Culloden looked really tired, and the guilt inside him resurfaced. “I can go now too, if you want some quiet time.” Merlin, this was embarrassing.

Cosgrach wanted to question Ethan with Are you sure? about Cece, but he kept his mouth shut. It wouldn't be nice ifhe questioned him, after all. He was very touched Ethan considered him as a family too. And Ethan seemed to understand what he was trying to say, anyway.

"You're right," he softly said. Ethan had to stop trying to 'fit in'. "You will find your way. I'm sure of it. Just relax and see how you rock this school." Yeah?

As for himself...

Cosgrach was going to be brave. "Go only if you feel more confident. I'll be alright. My main concern is you."

Well?

Well?

Maybe make a name for himself? Yeah, maybe he should do that. Besides, he’s got great friends to lean on, and he knew that they’ll be there until his business in Hogwarts was done. Ethan remained silent for a while as his friends’ faces flicked in his mind. Culloden’s right. He should be himself, and enjoy his time in school while it lasts. Problems will definitely come, but that shouldn’t scare him. He decided that it’ll be an avenue for him to grow up and be a better person.

Ethan was still not convinced that Culloden was okay, but he was sure that he was taking the man’s precious time. “It’s starting to make sense now, professor.” And confident? Maybe a little. The prefect shifted in his seat, and stood up to leave the professor alone. “I should go, sir. I reckon you need to rest now.” Just look at that tired face, yeah? Ethan took a few steps towards the door and opened it. “Thank you again.” The boy gave the man a genuine smile, a wave, and closed the door behind him and left Cosgrach in peace.

Zander made his way to the office eventually. Sure okay, it took him a little longer than it should have to get here, but he was still very upset. If Beautiful Bentley was here this would have never happened. She would have never let anyone put him in detention. Especially not him. But surely, Culloden was out to get him. First with that time that he was going to steal the bed. And then with that time when he didn't ever actually come to steal the bed. And now the undeserved detention. Hm. And the liquid luck was probably all a ploy too. A ploy get him to apologize to Romanos about thinking she was a Cold One- which he clearly would NOT have done if it weren't for the fact that he was under the influence.

Sophie was wrong about this guy. He didn't have a good side.

And he was out to get Zander. But why?! He hadn't ever done anything to this man. Except, well, being friends with Kevin and all. BUT Culloden probably had no idea that, that was a thing!! Okay, maybe after this last class and all, but he was a target before that so Kevin had nothing to do with it. This guy was just as mean as Kevin had said he was. And very intimidating.

And this is what confused Zander the most. He was pretty angry about all that stuff, but he was also intimidated, upset, and terrified.

Huh? Better? Cosgrach smiled and nodded.

"Take care now, son," he said absent-mindedly and once he was gone, he went to his bed to lie some more.

Cosgrach entered his office about five minutes later, once he was done with the drama.

So Zander didn't even sit? HA. He gestured him to take a seat and sat down on his throne-like chair as well, eyes as stern as he could do, on the boy.

Then he cracked a grin against himself.

"Don't worry, it's not detention," he announced after a moment, "figured you needed some 'boasting' among your friends, heh. 'Zander must be so brave to have offended good ole Cossy to have detention with him, death!'" Huh?

"So, let's talk. Beginning from your little remark hidden inside your question."

The Gryffindor almost jumped, when Culloden entered the room. Almost. But it wasn't because the man scared him PFT no. Just because he was zoned out on his thoughts, that the entrance took him by surprise, that's all. But he still awkwardly stood around because... Were they going to go to the classroom to do the detention thing?.... Or...? Yeah, see he knew absolutely nothing about detention. And that is precisely why the thought of one made him all shaky.

Then, as Culloden gestured to the chair, Zander raised an eyebrow in confusion, but sat down anyways. What was going on? And then that STARE.

Wait a minute--

Was he SMILING?! ????

Okay, okay so confusion was basically Zander's normal state of being. But this, this most definitely would have confused ANYONE and not just Zander, okay?!..... "It's not?" The Gryffindor tilted his head and just what? It wasn't a detention... But then why would he say that in front of the whole-- Oh. As if the Potion's Professor had read his mind, the explanation followed shortly and oh. "I-uh-...." Did he think that he was doing Zander a favor? Giving him detention in front of everyone? Well... Reckon it'd give him some credit with Kevin. And AJ too. And Bianca said he needed to be more wild. And PrefectHeadgirl Lex. And-- Oh. He saw the point. "That's, uh, very generous of you, sir?" Still confused. And also not sure what the appropriate thing to respond with is so....

Hidden remarks though? The fourth year shifted a little uncomfortably in his chair. No idea what 'good ole Cossy' was talking about. Nope. Nu uh. No hidden remarks here. Not for this Gryffindor. *whistling nonchalantly because pft nope* No idea at all. Instead of saying anything, he just nodded-still kind of confused.

Cosgrach grinned. He knew that was very generous, because to be honest, it seemed to him that Kevin was oppressing lil Zandy. Cosgrach knew that 'looking tough' and being rude to the professors were things that had to be done to enter a 'gang'. Zander clearly lacked that, and the professor was wise enought to see that Kevin didn't really defend him but rather, boasted again by 'defending' his 'friend', so this really was a favour.

Or the old man thought so.

Now, this was getting boring, though. Zander was playing the silly (Cosgrach didn't want to believe the boy could REALLY be THAT silly), and Cosgrach hated that without a potion.

"Perhaps you need to be reminded of?" he said with the tiniest trace of impatience in his tone, "Forgive me if I can't quote you perfectly, but your words were something like: 'Can it be used to take all your anger-that you already have-out at someone...' What makes you think I already have anger?"

Except, Cosgrach Culloden totally quote him perfectly, because his mind hardly ever forgot scorn.
