Default of Professor Culloden

As you enter the room, the first thing you see in the middle of the room is a hand-made Turkish carpet and nothing else. To the immediate right of the door stands a coat hanger for four coats a time, and you are expected to hang your coat there before fully entering the room. Professor's desk and two chairs in front of it are located at the right end with three pictures hanging from the wall, and his bookcase and 'emergency potions' shelves with a representational potion brewing set are located at the left end of the room. The walls are painted light blue.

The desk and visitors' set look expensive, and they indeed are. They are from genuine mahogany, all cut from the same wood. There is usually a big pile of papers hastily arranged at the farther side of the desk, and you will always see a potion phial and a book on the more organised side. Behind it is his office chair, and in front of it are two comfortable looking armchairs with a coffee table between them. You'll find a bowl of sweets that is filled with cheering up potion that will last for approximately three hours. Go on, take a cherry, apple, orange or lemon flavoured. Be careful not to take the last lemon though, because they are his favourite.

To the right side of the wall behind the desk hangs a picture depicting a Mardin, Midyat house with smiling kids sometimes singing a song and sometimes playing a game. To the left is a painting depicting Afghanistan with an old wizard at the centre of it. He is brewing a mysterious potion and will be more than happy to speak to you in Persian, but he just smiles upon asking about what he is doing. He was a respected wizard of Afghanistan, and Professor Culloden paid a fortune for the painting, so act accordingly. Beneath them in the middle hangs a picture of Borneo rainforests with birds and insects. If you are lucky, you will be treated with a birds lullaby and if you are unlucky, the insects will drill your brains with their buzzing sound.

The middle is only occupied by a handmade Turkish rug. While you may step on it, you will land yourself in detention faster than you can say 'potion' if those shoes are muddy or wet.

At the other end of the room is a bookcase full of books about potions, both muggle and magical plants and animals. Don't be surprised if you see your professor's name on 3-4 of them. Depending on how much he likes you, he may lend them to you.

On the shelves next to the bookcase stands his golden, representational potions brewing set and a few phials full of different potions. Along with the carpet and pictures, the set is his most prized possession.

If you can find him in his office, you are 'okay' to pay a visit.

The boy turned and without another word he bolted out of the office.

DIMA HAD TO HEAR ABOUT THIS!!!!!!!

Kyroh was bouncing - apparently, he wanted it THAT badly.

"Yeah, I'll - " the boy was gone "...let you know." Cosgrach looked after him for a moment and laughed to himself. It was worth creating a potion JUST to have this reaction.

The painting which caught his attention most was the borneo setting. It somewhat reminded him of that story he'd written about the Acromantula a year or so back. The sound of it was interesting too. Busy and alive with so much.

Cutty took a seat on one of the two chairs, meaning that one of the two boys would have to stand.

Ian saw two chairs and Cutty had already taken one. He decided that he was not going to be his normally friendly Huffie self and took the other seat, dropping his head as he watched his feet.

Ah, the boys were here.

Cosgrach moved to his throne and sat down. He was silent for a moment and looked at them. At least Ian looked ashamed, whereas Cutty was examining his room. After he was sure they were all focused on him, he cleared his throat.

"I know you are all capable wizards and you wanted to save us all," he said, "but the reason I specifically said 'fifth years and up' is because I wanted to avoid a chaos and let more experienced students to deal with it." Yeah? He wanted them to understand that, so he paused briefly to let them process.

"But someone hit Sophie Brown and froze her." He pursed his lips in anger and looked into their eyes. "Was it one of you?"

What? A gift? Cosgrach BEAMED as he took it and made a grateful sound.

"Oh, Silas, thank you!" Or, thank the elf? His mum? Merlin, being a professor was the best decision he had ever made! People fed him! He sat down on one of the armchairs, expecting him to take the other. He didn't want to put the huge table between them. They were past that point. He opened the box, and offered him some.

"Of course, ask away." He always had a moment for Silas.

Ian heard the professor clear his throat and he looked up from his feet to the unhappy face of Cosgrach. Ian realized that he'd acted rashly, but he was afraid of dying and having recently learned the freezing spell it seemed to make sense. He listened as the professor paused. This didn't seem like the appropriate time for him to respond or present a defense.

The next question floored Ian. The professor asked if he might have frozen Sophie Brown. His eyes widened as he tried to recall the chaotic details from the day before. He had performed a freezing spell, but he didn't think he'd actually hit a people. He remembered the professor clearing up the spot in the floor Ian had aimed for. He spoke, not waiting for Cutty to. ummm....sir...professor. I used a freezing spell, but I aimed at the floor. And I didn't even use one of the advanced ones. I'm pretty...well..reasonably....ummm...kind of sure I didn't hit Sophie. I thought you cleared up the spot I made. he looked down for a second and then back up. if I hit her, I'm terribly sorry. I know that would have put her in danger. he started playing with his hands and looking at his feet again, a sad, defeated look on his face.

"Of course, ask away." He always had a moment for Silas.

Silas beamed brighter still as the professor thanked him for the gift. Blushing slightly he sunk into armchair opposite. "It was nothing. I just like to share goodies with my favorite people." Yes, that meant Culloden was one of his favorites.

Now. Sighs. Shaking his head at the offer he wiped his palms on his pant legs. "You see sir, it's really two separate... hypothetical situations that I need some advice on. Neither of which are necessarily school related." Meaning he wasn't sure the professor had time for that. But he pushed on anyway.

"Okay say... there was this guy and he likes, and I mean LIKES, this person. But this person is his best friend. And well... the best friend probably doesn't feel the same way because it is kind of complicated and stuff. Like is it worth it to say something and risk an awesome friendship?" That was situation (hypothetical of course) number one. Now here is where it got tricky..."And also say... someone saw another person do something they ought not to have. And let's say, just for argument's sake, that something was stealing... would it be better to tell on that person or simply let things work themselves out? Because I know when you do something wrong you always get caught... and also say this person happens to have some serious anger issues... should someone do something about it?"

AND THERE IT WAS.

Could the therapy session start now? Was Professor Culloden getting paid enough to deal with this? Perhaps Silas' father could send him a bonus for dealing with his own kid so he didn't have to?

Gabriel hadn't expected the man to be so readily available...OR for himself to be seen so quickly. Apparently, there was zero time for an escape.

Entering the office with some trepidation, he stuck by the door, scouting the man's office in a way he hadn't the first time. He was one on one now. There was no Jeremiah to protect him....Gabe would have to do this on his own......which, considering his desired subject matter....it was preferred. Jere didn't know everything....and Gabe didn't really want him to.

................He'd be okay. This.......was NOT a big deal....

"H-hello.......professor."

Did he HAVE kids? -- and this would probably be the fanciest office Grayson had stepped into so far.

Yeah. So. Culloden. "Hey Professor!" he called, smiling in the man's direction as he took off his hoodie and placed it on the coats rack. Normally, he wouldn't have because it was only a freaking hoodie but something in the back of his brain was reminding him to be polite and show some manners. A voice, probably. One that sounded an awful lot like his mother's.

"Nice office you've got here." And he was just gonna take a seat on this comfy armchair, yeah? Brilliant.

See, this one looked pretty sad enough, and Cosgrach believed him. He did clean his mess, and it had affected Kevin, not Sophie. So Cosgrach nodded at him once, deemed minus 10 and this serious conversation was enough, so he said "I believe you. You may leave." He didn't look at the boy again, but turned to the other two. Well? What did they have to say?

Awwwwww! Cosgrach was among his favourite? The man BEAMED proudly and relaxed further in the armchair as he devoured the cookies. He might have said more, but his mouth was full and Silas began speaking, so he chose to listen to him.

Haha, yeah, and Cosgrach believed they weren't school related. He didn't embarrass the kid, though; the man knew this feeling too well. Instead, he politely nodded and kept listening.

Ow, man. Tough question. He straightened up in his seat and looked at a distant spot on the carpet dreamily. Ooooooh, even tougher question. Cosgrach didn't answer right away, but took a breath and let it out in a chuckle. He looked into his eyes.

"Wow, son," he said to begin with, "these are tough situations. I'd say, how much does this guy want to try his chance? It also depends on the signals the girl is giving. Like, has she completely closed the doors, or might it change?" Yeah, these two things would change the whole thing. He paused for Silas to answer, then went on.

"As for the second thing... I will be completely honest. I think this person needs to seek his best interest now, and not worry about the moral aspect of the situation unless it's really nagging at him, y'know?" He didn't wait for an answer. "So say it isn't nagging at him so much, let it be. Life will get att he thief anyway." He believed that too. "But if his conscience is heavy, then, is there a person whom this angry one wouldn't be so angry at? Explain it to that person first. If there isn't one, give him a calming draught before talking." There was no shame in that, it was called 'self-defence'. "This is, of course, assuming this angry person really matters. If it doesn't, why," he shrugged, "call an auror."

Cosgrach was going to assume that if something DID go wrong with the Felix, Gabe would speak more easily, since it was life threatening and all, so the man relaxed and waited for Gabriel to relax. It was okay. Cosgrach was a friendly person. He wasn't going to bite him. He really wasn't, no matter what Gabriel did. Almost.

"Hello, Gabriel." He was cheerful to make the boy relaaaax. "Would you like to sit?" It was fine if he wouldn't, though. Cosgrach could have a conversation while standing too. "Would you like something to eat or drink, maybe?"

"Would you like to eat or drink something?"

Cutty's attention remained focused on Culloden. He studied the man carefully. It was interesting that little nuance of anger at the mention of Sophie Brown. Ruby Banner was new to the school and therefore Cutty couldn't have expected her to know or even agree with his opinions about Brown. But this...this little gesture spelled it all out. The Professor did not show any harsh signs of aggression when speaking about the general safety of the class at large, but mention Sophie Brown's name and there it was.

Cutty wondered what the board of governors might think of that little snippet of unprofessionalism. Just how close were Cosgrach Culloden and Sophie Brown?

Ian had departed, and Cutty took a glance at Gregoire before speaking. "You can let Gregoire go, Professor Culloden. I hit Sophie Brown with a freezing spell." He admitted, matter-of-factly. And waited for the magma to rise in 3...2... .

...what?

Cosgrach's jaw dropped open, and he looked at Cutty dumbly. No. It couldn't be. He frowned, but only in confusion and denial. Sophie had warned him about Cutty and he was the most likely candidate, but Cosgrach had refused to believe that.

"Gregoire, get out," he breathed, not looking at anywhere but Cutty, and once the boy was out, he croaked a "Why?"

The magma didn't rise at all. If anything, it had completely cooled down. He was visibly hurt and disappointed. He wanted answers not for Sophie's sake, but for Cutty and Soheir's.

Cutty was a little dumbfounded at Culloden's reaction. He'd been expecting heat and underlying anger geared to erupt.

WHAT HAD HE DONE WONG??!

The boy's face held steady as he considered what Culloden was most likely to believe. The worst of him? You betchya. He had no credit there. Shoukrane, ummu. Shoukrane. "It was instinctual. I felt in danger and I had to react. Sophie Brown just happened to be there." Just as he told Healer Murdoch.

"Yer not gonna tell her, are yew?" But of course he would. Or so Cutty figured by observation of their strange interaction in class. Or maybe he wouldn't. Wouldn't want to worry the girl anymore over the situation.

Cosgrach was confused and conflicted. He tried to read Cutty's face, but it was steady and he couldn't tell if it was a lie or truth. But... surely a fourteen year old wouldn't be as malicious as to FREEZE someone while fighting with a troll, would he? No... it had to be an accident, and Sophie was just over-protective about Toby. Cutty might be hurt, but he wouldn't want to kill Sophie. Yeah, She was overreacting.

"No, I won't," he said at last. Sophie was already... rather dramatic about it, she certainly didn't need to know this.

"I want to believe that it was an accident, Cutty." Should he? His serious eyes were on the boy's. Clearly, this was a testing question.

Silas chewed his lip for a moment as the Professor spoke. Should he?... he could definitely trust Proffy Culloden. Definitely. "Well, sir... I think he quite likes me as well. He's just... a bit younger and not sure what to think of liking another guy." Yeah. Umm. Cue the burning ears. Did that say what needed to be said without giving too much detail?

Silas chewed his lip after he got his bearings about himself. "And I think you're right... karma will catch up to him. But if he pulls his wand on me again I will retaliate." Yep. He even gave a nod for emphasis. MHM. I mean, was it too much to ask for a dude not to get all touchy and pull his wand? He thought not!

"So I guess I'm really bad at speaking in hypothetical situations, huh?" And then Silas noticed... a ring? On an important finger of the Professor... was he? "Professor... did you get married?" That wasn't too personal was it? Man. MAN. His heart was breaking a lil bit. His man crush was hitched. SAD. Could he have a cookie now? Feelings needed to be eaten!

Cutty attempted to read Culloden attempting to read him. Was that confusion? Did that mean he'd be writing his mother and Cutty would have to spend yet another summer in and out of the Healer's office? There was nothing wrong with him. His mother simply didn't pay enough attention to really know that. No adults did. Not really.

He gave a single nod at the decision not to tell Sophie Brown. Understood. But he wondered if it was really the best recourse, as anyway she'd get it out of him. He was wrapped around her finger as were many others and then he'd have to account for the time where he'd kept it from her. Thus was the power of Sophie Brown and Cutty wanted to know how she did it. And why, hadn't she tried it on him? An eyebrow quirked giving his face a thought laden expression.

"No, you don't." But, he didn't sound hurt or angry by this. Again, with simple facts. Saffron comes from the crocus family. It's were painters used to obtain the expensive colour yellow for their paintings. You know, stuff you could look up in an Encyclopedia.

Haha, yeah, Cosgrach saw that coming. He offered the boy a soft smile. "Experience speaking here. Such topics are rarely hypothetical. Don't feel bad about it, though. Your secrets are safe with me." If Silas didn't trust him, he wouldn't have come to him in the first place, really, but the man still wanted to reassure him. Cossy could keep his mouth shut if he had to.

"I think you should wait for him to get older and let him decide what he wants," he said, talking with more ease now that Silas was relaxed too. "It wouldn't be nice if you rushed him into things he might regret later, y'know? He probably looks up to you, now, so it might be hard for him to say "no" even if he doesn't want to be more than friends." Did Silas understand where he was coming from?

As for the other man/boy/whoever. "Is this someone I know? Someone I can help with?" Because he didn't like the sound of this at all. If someone at school scared Silas so much, he would like to know.

Oh, the man smiled warmly as he glanced at his ring. "I did, yes, during the Christmas break." He put down the cookie box on the small coffee table between them. Of course, he was oblivious to Silas' broken heart.

Cutty was Soheir's son, clearly. She was hard to read too, and her son was just the same. Anyway, it didn't matter. No fourteen year old could be so cruel, so Cosgrach would just let it -

No, you don't.

So matter-of-factly.

"I don't know what you think of me, Cutty," he started casually, but his tone would soon turn his most serious, "but I don't hate you. In fact, I do want your well-being quite a lot. I do want it to be an accident; because if it's not, I fear my respect for you as a bright young man will come to an end and we'll need the Headmistress in this conversation." He paused to let that sink in.

"So I will ask it again: Was it an accident?" All Cutty had to do was say 'Yes'. Three words, one syllable. It was so easy.

"So I will ask it again: Was it an accident?" All Cutty had to do was say 'Yes'. Three words, one syllable. It was so easy.

There we go. He'd gotten the man to threaten him, at least. Maybe not angrily, but he did nonetheless.

The Headmistress? That might be a better idea. A witness to what was sure to be a situation of some kind. Culloden sounded like his Healer. A summoned tone of concern, perhaps and a threatened loss of respect transfigured from a small mound of illogic. None of it made a blind bit of sense to Cutty. A Muslin tree.

But it wouldn't be make believe, if you believed in me.

"Yes. It was an accident. I already told yer it was an accident." The boy lowered his head and covered his face for a moment. A very brief moment. "I lost control of my magic and it happened. Are you going to call the Headmisstress?" Besides he wanted to see Cosgrach Culloden do that thing again where he moved a silver crow from his wand. The patronus charm.

Silas watched the Professor as he spoke. Of course he was right. He had even thought similar things. Nodding his head he said, "True. I would hate to lose him as a friend. He's my best friend ever." He was aware he actually sounded like a kid right now. Heh. "And thank you for that, sir."

Now the other was a bit tricky. Silas nodded yet again. Cossy knew him. Silas had seen him in class. Sighs. "I'm not sure anyone can help this guy. He's very... rrude and hateful. Although I can handle it. I have a lot of patience... but if he steals or pulls his wand on me... or threatens to hex me again I will come straight to you, sir."

And he would.

Sighing audibly he reached over and took a cookie and shoved the WHOLE thing in his mouth. "Confraggerwashuns..."

The relief was real. Cosgrach's face relaxed. He could still like Cutty, he could. The boy had only been unfortunate. He wasn't malicious. Sophie was wrong. The boy had nothing against her.

"No, I'm not." His tone was actually friendly. He was still angry at Cutty for casting a spell without his leave, but he had already punished him for that and made a speech about how dangerous it was. No need to repeat it again. In fact, Cosgrach just wanted to forget about it.

"You may leave too." No harm done. All forgotten.

Nodnod. So, Cosgrach was relieved for being able to help. He smiled a little. "You're welcome." He hoped the boys would sort it out by themselves and live happily ever after. Hehehe.

Oh. Cosgrach knew him? Oh. "But -" The man didn't know who was very rude and hateful! He sighed. "I understand that you don't want me to know who it is." Because then, as a professor, he MUST look into it, which might cause problems for Silas. Yeah. He had been THAT teenager who used to torture people for telling him in. "I'll just forget about it until you want me to remember?" Yeah? Deal? Deal. He hoped Silas would never have to come to him, though. Cosgrach didn't like troublesome people.

"Hey, why's the sigh for?" He grinned, not lingering on it much. "Thanks." Silas said 'congratulations', right?

Cutty's stone-face turned upwards a bit when Culloden's own pulled something like...relief, was it? Yes. He seemed to have a weight lifted off his shoulders. Why? Was he serious when he said he didn't want to think Cutty capable of having hit Sophie with the spell purposefully?

This was lost on Cutty at the moment. The idea that he had anything to lose. He'd wrtitten Cosgrach Culloden off long ago.

"Hang on...?", He began in an asking tone. "Can you show me how to conjure a bird too?"

Professor Culloden was just... amazing. Like very amazing. Silas wanted to hug him, but he wasn't sure if the man appreciated hugs. Heh. And yes he preferred not to tell the man about Kevin just yet. With him being his dormmate and all it did mean there could be BIG issues. Sighs again.

"Yes sir I would like that. Just forget unless I need you to remember." SEE THIS WAS WHY THE PROF WAS HIS FAVORITE. He understood what it was like to be a teenager and wasn't a crazy person... like certain members of staff.

..and yeah no. He wouldn't tell him he was sad his man crush was married. Hahahahahaha. No.

Shaking his head he used the fact his mouth was full to buy himself time to think. "I think one of my sisters is getting married soon. I might miss her wedding if I'm at school. That's why the sighing." Lies. All lies.

Brightest student.

He was Culloden's brightest student.

Was he happy about this? FREAKING YES. Just look at his FACE. Some of the nervousness and mellowness had melted away and now there was a half-smirk, half-smile displayed there instead. "Be careful, sir, you're gonna boost my ego." No, don't be careful. Keep the compliments coming, Culloden. He LOVED them. "Oh yeah? Was it a dunghole before?" How long had Culloden been working here in the first place?

Something to eat or drink? "Yeah please, sir." See? Manners. And it might be easier to talk about things that were worrying him one he had some food.

Hang on?

Bird?

The man frowned in confusion.

"What bird?" The literal ones? Or was this some sort of a trick question?

Cosgrach nodded. Ignorance was bliss at times, and this was one of them. He wouldn't talk about it until Silas did. He trusted the boy in that.

But... the man looked tormented. "I'm sure if you speak it with the Headmistress, she'll let you." Yeah, he was SURE. Annie knew what family meant. "If you're too shy to talk to her, I can." She happened to be a close friend of his, did Silas know? Hehe.

Cosgrach chuckled softly. "Well, it should be boosted." Grayson reminded him of his youth minus the bullying. He was actually a nice, sort of egoistical lad. Cosgrach used to lack the 'nice', though. He was glad Grayson wasn't hated, but loved.

Dunghole? HAHA. "My predecessor wasn't into decoration much." He shrugged. He had also paid a fortune for this furniture, which he hoped was VISIBLE by the shiing wooden.

He brought out a jar of cookies and shuffled around his drawers. He brought out two cups, at last, and twp tea bags. He poured hot water from his wand and pushed one cup towards him.

"Here you go." Opening the jar, he took a cookie for himself. "My wife did them." His WIFE. Yeah.

HEADMISTRESS RED HAIR.?! Yeah no. Silas would take a hard pass on speaking with her... "She scares me, Professor. I'd rather... wait and see." Because scary lady was scary, yo! Besides... his parents would find out he had fibbed to the man and all hell would break loose. And Silas didn't want to deal with his parents. Nope.

Now Silas sat fidgeting for a moment. Taking a deep breath he said, "Thank you very much, sir. And... no . One knows... that I like my friend... like that." So yeah hush hush. Not that he thought the man would gossip or anything... but yeah.

Then without warning he shot out of the armchair and rushed over to Professor Culloden without pause. And before he could think about it he was hugging him. HUGGING PROFESSOR CULLODEN. Yep. He hugged the man for a brief moment and then released him. "Thanks... as always, sir."

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

SPOILER!!: From outside
Cosgrach wasn't sleeping this time. He was wide awake and was reading a rather voluminous book about plants used in potions making. The book was full of notes he took himself, and if he liked something less than being disturbed in sleep, it was being disturbed while he was doing potions stuff. And the knocking was quite loud too! He growled, looked at the door and thought of NOT answering, but if they knocked on his door this loudly, it had to be something urgent.

It'd better be.

So he drew his wand and waved at it to open the door.

"Come in!"

Of course Lex was prepared to knock again and even louder than the first couple times but just as she lifted her fist to pound on the wood, the door swung open of its own accord. Well, that was one way to do it, leaving the Gryffindor momentarily standing at the open door, fist raised before it finally occurred to her she was allowed to step inside.

"Afternoon Professor." She chimed, taking some big 'ole steps into the room. "You're not too super extremely busy for the Head Girl, are you?" See how she used the title like Collarbin wanted? Lex hardly ever called herself Head Girl so naturally now it was his turn to make a sacrifice by in turn not being busy either. See how that work?

"I was hoping to talk to you about...er...feelings?" Was that it?

"Yew casted a spell in class that day, Professor. The patronus charm." He reminded the old potions master. "Yers was a behrd, wasn't it? A silvery little behrd." Perhaps. Or a bat. Or non-corporeal as it spilt out of the wand tip and was gone so quickly.
