Default Potions 1

The class looks the same with two little-but-effective changes: instead of stools, there are proper chairs with soft cushions to sit and lean back on. The Professor cares about his students' posture, apparently, because they are charmed to take the most comfortable shape and height once a student is seated.

The second change is the walls: they are now a soft, calming blue. He is desperate to avoid blasting cauldrons, and muggles claim this colour calms people down.

He opens the door 15 minutes before the class time and sits at his desk to wait for the students to arrive, with a neutral expression on his face.

OOC: Come in, take your seats! The class will resume approximately 7 hours later. You may chat among yourselves, but please don't go overboard with it. Thanks!

The lesson is in progress now, so do not post your late arrival and just RP as if you have been there all along!

Lesson progress
Hello, welcome, first question: What is special about dragons? Which trait would you like to have?
Individual answers and second question: Is it possible to breathe fire exactly like a dragon's? What do you think this fire is like?
More information and third question: Where can it be used?
Its story, ingredients and the first step
Answers and steps 2&3
Reactions and steps 4&5
'Problems' and step 6
'Professors', any volunteers?, step 7&8
Volunteers: Bart, Caleb, Alice
RP activity: At least two posts: 1. Breathing fire on someone and 2. RPing the effects from someone else's fire

Potion progress
• 3 goose feathers (chopped WELL that they look like powder)
• 5 square centimetres of parasites (mycosis fungus)
• Roughly 2 square centimetres fire-crab shell (prepared)
• One fire slug
• 8 drops of salamander blood
• Some flobberworm mucus (depends on how much rigidity one wants)

1. Fill your cauldron 1/3 with water.
2. Add powdered goose feather. Stir clockwise until it looks homogenous and then turn the heater to high.
3. Get your pestle and mortar, crush the parasites for thirty seconds or so, fill the mortar with water, shake it for them to mix better and add it slowly to the potion.
4. Stir counter clock-wise for 7 times and turn off the heater. Let it cool until no vapour is seen. This should take about 5 minutes.
5. Take the fire crab shell but do not add it! Hold it with a metal spoon, lower it nicely into the potion just inside the surface—make sure it doesn’t splash water AT ALL—then start stirring 1 time clockwise, 1 time counter clockwise for 12 times in total. Each stir should take about ten seconds for it to spread thoroughly. Once done with stirring, get it out and put it away on a tissue.
6. Wait for another minute and cut the slug vertically into two in the meantime, add the pieces and stay away from the cauldron as far as you can. If you’ve done everything correctly, the surface should explode harmlessly and start burning. Put it out with your breath ONLY, so you’d better hurry before the fire spreads to the whole surface.
7. Add 8 drops of salamander blood. Alternate between two stirs counter-clock wise, two stirs clock-wise. Repeat for four times. (So you should stir 16 times in total.)
8. Add flobberworm’s mucus to keep it in your mouth better (no more than a tablespoon, not a must).
9. Enjoy.

Transforming the whole body into a dragon WOULD BE cool... but oh well. Not everything was possible. He thought about this question, but couldn't think of any logical reason as to why someone would need to breath fire. "Was it made just for fun?" That was logical enough for him.

SPOILER!!: Brewing

Interestinggggggggg...

Kinda.

It cured you from the flu, though. THAT was impressive. Theo was always suffering with that illness since he had a pretty lame immune system. He grinned because he would definitely volunteer to demonstrate after finishing his potion. Oh, gooooood, it wasn't one of those super long and annoying potions. Theo squinted his eyes at the ingredients list, then pulled out his wand to fill up his cauldron.

"Scourgify." First of all, of course. "Aguamenti!" Theo used his favourite spell to fill his cauldron, then stopped when he was 1/3 the way to the top.

Theo went to the front of the classroom to retrieve his feathers, then added them carelessly to the cauldron. He stirred it as he was told, then made a face at the professor. Homogenous? What the heck was that? Oh well, Theo kept on stirring until he felt it was time to stop, and then he turned up the heat high. Easy peasy so far.

Next up was crushing in the mortar time. He pulled up his gloves from his bag then proceeded to add the mycosis fungus into his cleaned mortar. Theo counted thirty seconds like they had been told and crushed it well. He was good at the crushing thing. He dripped a bit of water from the tip of his wand into the mortar (I told you he was good at that spell), then shook it.

Add CALMLY to the potion?

Theo snickered at that, dunno why.

He did his best to add it calmly. Which took a long time, actually, since Theo was not a careful potion maker.

Yeah, yeah. Her cauldron was clean.

And even though she hadn't wanted it to happen to hers, she couldn't help but chuckle at the few students who had all the water vanished from inside their cauldrons. How funny was that? She was sure, though, that if it had been Lafay still teaching, a lot more than the vanishing of their water would've happened. At least she had more cauldron contents being vanished to look forward to, because someone would mess up again. They always did. Of course, it wouldn't be her. Nope. No way.

But, until that happened, Rhodes paid close attention to the Professor, and writing a few more things down onto her parchment, she stood from her seat to collect the ingredients that were needed for the next step. Once she had both ingredients, she moved back to her station and quickly cleaned off her mortar and pestle before placing her gloves onto her hands. She then added in the powered feather to the potion, and with her very clean spoon, began to stir clockwise.

Stir, stir, stir stir stir stir.

There! She pulled the spoon out of her cauldron and tapping it against the side a few times, so the little droplets of liquid would go back inside, she set it back down on the table to turn the heater on high and to grab her mortar and the fungus. And she didn't want to think about the fungus getting on her. Rhodes wrinkled her nose as she added the fungus to the mortar, and once it was all crushed, for exactly thirty seconds, she added the water, gave it a little shake, and it was ready to bake. Err..

She calmly added it to the cauldron. Calmly added.

Anna listened to everything he had been saying and gave a small nod. She looked at her cauldron, and quickly cleaned it out, though it was brand new and she'd never brewed anything before, but still, she wasn't going to be one of the kids scolded for not doing it. She was fast to clean the rest off as well before going to get the necessary ingredients that he'd given them.

Anna looked down at the ingredients, she was already falling behind the others it seemed. She poured the 1/3 cup of water into her cauldron and almost lit a fire, but stopped herself, He said not to do that... She mentally scolded herself. She looked at him and waited for him to continue since she didn't have any questions.

She nodded and added the feathers and stirred, "Professor, I'm sorry, but what do you mean by homogenous?" She looked at him confused. The poor third year was already lost and that was only the second step! She felt totally useless... She did slowly continue to stir, making sure there wasn't too much difference from when she had first poured the feathers in.

OHHH! Demonstrating! Yessshh! Abbi wanted to volunteer if she could! She so would! MHHHHMM! SO SO COOL!

Yet as the ingredients went up on the board the second year zoomed ahead excitedly and fetched her ingredients. She then returned and began scribbling some notes messily down on a parchment. Who needed to be neat anyways? She could steal read it, but apparently neatness and cleanliness was VERY important when it came to potions. SIGH.

"Scourgify!" She cleaned her cauldron quickly then with Incendio lit a fire below it After that she used Aguamenti to fill it with water till it was a third full. Then she looked up at the board once more and listened to the Professor to see what was next.

Ohhh. Powdery-sherbet-chunky-feather things. Okay. She added them to her cauldron and began stirring as she stared at that big word. Homogeneous. WHAT was that???? She wasn't a shy one so her hand shot up within a secon. "Professor? What's homogene..yeah that word." Cause if you messed up in potion the whole thing could go BOOOSSHH and blow up in your face. Did it look like Abbi wanted that to happen? DID IT?

After using Scourgify on his cauldron and having added a new batch of water to one third fill his cauldron, Adi proceeded to the next steps. He added the powdered feather then, grabbing the woodes spoon, he cast another cleaning Charm before proceeding to stir clockwise.

Stir, stir, stir. Homogenous meant alike or something along that line, right? Anyway, when Adi felt he had stirred long enough, he retrieved the spoon and focused on the next instruction. The heater. Right. "Incendio!'' After setting it to high he turned to the fungus. Gloves on he put the fungus into the Scourgified mortar and began to crush it with the Scourgified pestle. After the half a minute had passed, Adi added some water and shook the mortar. Gently, he added the mixture to the potion.

Sander quickly leaned forward when the Professor started speaking again giving them further instructions. He quickly scribbled all that down in his journal.

Text Cut: Sander's Journal

Purpose for Potion:
Because of the salamander blood in it, the potion is used to cure a light illnesses like flu, heal scars.
Can also be used to warm up body during winter and also to scare off animals.

Ingredients for Fire Breathing Potion:
1. 3 feathers (chopped WELL that they look like powder)
2. 5 centimetre square of parasites (mycosis fungus)
3. Roughly 2 centimetre square fire-crab shell (prepared)
4. One fire slug
5. 8 drops of salamander blood
6. Some flobberworm mucus (depends on how much rigidity one wants)

Steps to brewing Potion:
1. Clean cauldron.
2. Add water to 1/3 of the cauldron
3. Clean wooden stick, mortar and pestle.
4. Add powdered feather.
5. Use stick and stir clockwise until mixture looks homogenous.
6. Light burner and turn the heat to high.
7. Put on dragon hide gloves.
8. Add culture of mychosis fungus into mortar.
9. Crush with pestle for thirty seconds.
10. Add water while shaking the mortar to allow mixture to mix well.
11. Add to water in cauldron.

Now it was time to follow the steps and start making the potion. He looked down at his notes and it was then he noticed that big word that the Professor had used. Homogenous. He needed to figure out what it meant, so he first checked to make sure no one was looking before digging inside his backpack for his pocket dictionary. He flipped through the pages until he came across the word. Ahhh...it meant of the same or similar nature of kind.

"Guess that's supposed to mean same consistency? Sander thought to himself. Okay now that he had that figured out he first pulled out his mortar and pestle and a wooden stick from his kit. He pointed his wand at the three items and said, "Scourgify" proceeding to clean each of them. When he was satisfied they had been thoroughly cleaned upon examination, he ended the spell.

Now it was time to add the ingredients. He picked up the powdered feather and poured it into the cauldron filled with water. Then he picked up the wooden stick and began stirring it clockwise allowing the powder to blend in well with the water. He kept stirring until he arrived at the desired consistency.

He reviewed his notes again before picking up his wand and pointing it at the burner, said, "Incendio". A small flame shot out from his wand and lit the burner. Sander ended the spell with "Finite" before adjusting the knob on the burner until the heat to high.

Next he put on his dragon hide gloves and then picked up the dish containing the mychosis fungus and added it into the mortar. He then picked up his pestle and began crushing the fungus applying pressure for thirty seconds. Then he added some water in the mortar, then tapped and shaked the mortar with his pestle to allow the crushed fungus to mix in well with the water.

Once he was sure that the water and the fungus was thoroughly mixed, Sander picked up the mortar and slowly added into the now bubbling water in the cauldron.

Picking up his quill, he scratched off the steps he had completed in his journal.
Text Cut: Sander's Journal

Ingredients for Fire Breathing Potion:
1. 3 feathers (chopped WELL that they look like powder)

9. Crush with pestle for thirty seconds.
10. Add water while shaking the mortar to allow mixture to mix well.
11. Add to water in cauldron.

It was only after he had completed the first portion of the potion making did he realize that others were also what homogenous meant. So he whispered hopefully loud enough for the others to hear.

"Pssst....the word homogenous means of the same consistency. So you're supposed to mix the powdered feather with the water until it is thoroughly and properly mixed. Hope that helps," Sander told anyone who was listening.

Shame, shame. Some students forgetting to clean their cauldron. Stun. stun. Or whatever. He realized that he would need other equitment. Asher grabbed his mortar, wooden stick, and stirrer to clean them. "Scourgify." to all three tools in front of him. He wrote down the instructions so he could go back to them if he needed to.

Going up to the front and collecting the ingredients. And took them back to his seat. He added the powdered feathers. Stirring the brew clockwise with the wooden stick. Next he turned the burner on high. Since Cosgrach said it was a good idea to put the gloves on he so. He didn't even have time to mess with all of that so gloves were a must. He placed the mycosis fungus into the mortar and crushed them for about 30 seconds. He added a little bit water to it. Shake. Then added it the the brew. As calmly as he could.

Blair nodded in acknowledgement to show she had been listening and continued with the next step. "Right so first I add the powdered feather," she muttered, not noticing she was talking to herself.
She lifted what she assumed was the powdered feather and dropped it into her cauldron and began stirring clock wise.

The mixture began to look what Blair assumed homogenous meant so she turned the heater up to high. She eyed up the mycosis fungus whilst pulling on her gloves. Blair didn't fancy having any kind of marks over her hands. Placing them in her mortar she crushed them whilst counting 30 seconds.

What was the next instruction, add them calmly? What was that supposed to mean? She tentatively placed the fungus into the cauldron.

Ascanius could care less about all of the mindless chit-chat that the Professor seemed to be droning on about. He had come to a potions class not a let me chew your ear off with all of these fun little tidbits I know, yeah? At least he wasn't as bad as Glitter Trousers. That man just liked to talk to hear his own voice, which Ascanius could attest to being annoying and far too fanciful for classroom speech.

Anyway, Ascanius kept his mouth shut as the lesson and the book swallowers all had a jolly good time talking about nonsense. And dragons and fire breathing and all the kinds of stuff that muggles associated with magic.

When the actual brewing began, Ascanius sat forward without a word and began to clean the cauldron. 'Cause it had been sitting around all summer without anyone touching it. Anything could have taken residency in it. That and it was the rules. So he scourgified it nice and clean.

Once that was done he mumbled aguamenti under his breath and filled the cauldron a third of the way full with water as per instructions. The sixth year avoided lighting the burner underneath and waited for the next set of instructions. In that time he scribbled down some notes on his parchment. S'good to have something to follow, yeah?

Then he added in the feather and began to stir the potion. Or, y'know, the water with a feather in it. He continued to stir until he was sick of doing it and then he turned the heat up on high underneath the cauldron. Mmk.

Quickly cleaning his mortar, he added the mycosis fungus. He tried not to concentrate so hard on what it looked like...but it was hard. Funny looking thing, fungus. After thirty seconds of crushing it up, he stopped and added a titch of water to the mess that was now in his mortar. Shake, shake.

All that done, he calmly, 'cause he was always calm duh, added it in.

Gwen listened to the instructions, and replayed them twice in her heard, but they still didn't make much sense to her. First step, clean cauldron. She'd bought it new and hadn't used it yet, surely it was clean already? Next step, fill 1/3 full with water. Was there a sink somewhere? Gwen didn't see a sink. She watched as older students easily poured water from their wands into the cauldron. How was she supposed to do that?

She held her wand over the cauldron and willed water to come out of it. Nothing. Obviously that wasn't going to work. "Aqua," she tried, hearing another student say something like that. Clearly that was the wrong thing to say because again, nothing happened. She listened more carefully. "Aguamend!" she tried one more time. To her delight water poured in a spout from the tip of her wand into the cauldron. It looked a little salty, but that didn't matter, right?

Next. Gross gross gross. Gwen listened to the instructions feeling sicker every minute. Homogenous? She assumed from context that it meant until it all looks blended. Powdered feather it was. She stirred, wore gloves, turned the heater up, added (shudder) fungus and moved on. Pestle? Maybe this crushy looking thing? The point was, they had to be crushed. Did it really matter which tool she used? It was like using a kitchen fork to stir the macaroni rather than the tool meant for stirring noodles.

Gwen hated cooking. Finally she was done, sort of. Her potion didn't look much like the other students potions...It was kind of gooey, like the slime they had made at the hands-on museum.

Slowly she raised her hand. This was wrong, wasn't it? She was right, the hat had been wrong to put her in the house for smart people.

Her mother used to tell her stories about the Celts when she was little, and that image had always terrified her, though perhaps it wasn't appropriate to share in school.
Celts rode to battle naked? Could Cosgrach ask to her, or should he read it on his own? It wasn't quite the purpose of the potion, but he liked the idea, so he nodded at her.

Katarina stopped there, looking up at the professor curiously.
Hmm. Hmm. "Good thinking," he said, "but not quite." He still nodded at her approvingly.

Cosgrach eeeeeyed her.

Then laughed heartily. "Great thinking." The Gryffindors had good leaders this term.

Cosgrach nodded at him again. How did he end up in Hufflepuff? He had to learn his name too.

"Frozen lake part, especially, is good thinking," he said, because such lakes ought to be melted down carefully, right?

Capt'n and Lady Ravenclaw had great ideas too. Cosgrach nodded at them. They thought well there.

"Psychological attack. Good thinking."

This boy, too, had some interesting ideas. Cosgrach put on his thinking face, then eventually nodded.

"I haven't thought about that, but yes."

So, many thought it was for show... Cosgrach looked thoughtful for a moment, then narrowed his eyes, pursed his lips flipped his hand several times to indicate it COULD be thought as 'show'. "You could say that... it was for show."

Protection? Hmm. It was the same reaction again, and in the end, he said "Not in the sense you are putting, but it was for protection, yes."

Cooking, though? "It is warm to the skin, so I don't think it is hot enough to cook something well. But it is good to warm yourself or someone on a cold winter day, although that wasn't its initial purpose."

Text Cut: You should read these too

"Okay, so, it is unknown exactly when it was invented, but it's thought to be around 500 AD," he said as he was in front of the class once more to explain it better. "The first records of it are in ancient Persian libraries, but they are not the inventors. The tribe that invented it doesn't have a name or origin in the records, but Persians provide us with a logical and satisfying story.

"The potion is used by the tribe in the holy rituels to honour the dragons, because they were their gods. As I've already said, it has salamander blood in it that is an ingredient used to cure, but the tribe didn't know it then. They thought it was the holy dragon spirit that cured them, and the recipe was their most prized possession. Just imagine, the dragons are even more impossible to tame in those days, and a potion that enables them to breathe fire like them cures them, warms them up on cold winter days and because it is fire, scares off other animals. It is still a handy potion out in the wild, and for us modern people, the most important property is the 'curing'. It is easy to brew and you will recover from flu in less than a day. It is also good for scars and light illnesses like flu.

"As for what happens if you drink it, I saw some enthusiastic students among you to demonstrate." His eyes SHONE. "Why don't we give them a chance after we are done with brewing?"

He smirked again and tapped his wand at the board for the ingredients to appear.

• 3 goose feathers (chopped WELL that they look like powder)
• 5 centimetre square of parasites (mycosis fungus)
• Roughly 2 centimetre square fire-crab shell (prepared)
• One fire slug
• 8 drops of salamander blood
• Some flobberworm mucus (depends on how much rigidity one wants)

"The feathers and fire-crab shells are already prepared and are on my desk, where you can also get a culture of fungus." Mycosis fungus. Should he warn them, in case they didn't know what it was? During brewing, maybe. "The size of the shell depends on how much you want to brew. We don't want to spend all Hogwarts money, so we are keeping them small." He EYED them. No playing around with them, okay?

"Only the fire-crab shell part is modernised. They used to use a plant for that, but it is extinct now due to the wars that destroyed its habitat." He sighed dramatically. "But the effect is the same, so let's start brewing.

"Fill your cauldron 1/3 with water, please, and do not light a fire undernearth.

"Any questions, in the meantime?"

Bri took notes on everything the professor was telling them. The potion sounded very interesting. She then wrote down the ingredients and the first step to brewing the potion, into her notebook, before grabbing the necessary ingredients.

She frowned not knowing how to add the water into her cauldron, she glanced around and notice people using two spells. Scourgify, which seemed to clean the cauldron, and Aguamenti, which added the water. It took a couple of tries of each but she managed to clean her cauldron and fill it a third with water. The young brunette smiled to herself, before writing the spells and what they do in her notebook, for future reference.
Text Cut: part 2
Cosgrach checked his watch. They had to move on.

"You ARE cleaning your cauldrons and mortars and stuff before using them, right?" So that they didn't forget the 'cleanness' rule? Because he'd had to correct 3-4 students already, and he didn't want anyone to fall behind because of that.

"The next step is: Add the powdered feather and stir clock wise with a wooden stick until it looks homogenous, then turn the heater to high and add culture of mycosis fungus into your mortar. I advise you wear your gloves before doing that, because mycosis fungus is a parasite that lives on your skin and may leave permanent white stains if not cured in time. The curing process is... hard, to mildly put it, and they cause odour after a while."

Could he scare them enough? Hehe

"Once they are in the mortar, crush them with pestle for thirty seconds or so, add some water on them and shake the mortar a little for them to mix better with water. Then, add them calmly to the potion."

Bri listened and wrote down the next steps to the potion before doing them herself. She poured the feathers before stirring them the right way, luckily she knew what 'homogenous' meant. She then turned the heater on high, before turning towards to the rest of the ingredients. She used the 'Scourgify' spell once again on her mortar before pulling on her gloves. She then added the mycosis fungus into the mortar, and started to crushed them, that bit was rather soothing, Bri thought. After adding a bit of water and shaking it carefully, so nothing fell out, the young girl added the mycosis fungus into the cauldron. When everything was finished, the young girl looked up at the professor, and waited for the next set of instruction. Potions is quite fun, the brunette thought.

Fire-crab shells were so pretty and she was looking forward to using them. Hannah jotted down notes and made special note of all of the ingredients that were needed. Potions was one of her best subjects and she was not going to do poorly this late in the game.

[B]Scourgify!”] Cauldrons had to be cleaned before you worked with them. Hannah filled her cauldron with 1/3 of water and had to stop herself from lighting a fire. She looked around to see if everybody was on the same page. It was only water… how hard could it be?

Hannah really hoped that the students who weren’t cleaning their cauldrons were first years because honestly any other year would be totally unacceptable. The seventh year added the powdered feather and stirred clock wise with her wooden stick. She stirred, and stirred until it looked homogenous. Once she got the result she was looking forward she turned the heat to high. Next she was going to have to work with some gross stuff so she put on her gloves for extra protection, and added culture of mycosis into her mortar.

She crushed it for 30 seconds while humming quietly to herself. She added a bit of water. Hannah then easily added the crushed nastiness to her cauldron.

Elisabetta frowned as she tried to recall the potions instructions in her head.

Add what to what? This is not going to be good, she thought, desperately trying to remember what to add first. She already knew one thing--Potions class was not going to be her strong suit. Nevertheless, she lifted her chin and pretended to know what she was doing. After all, she was a Slytherin, and Slytherins could not afford to look stupid...at least that's what her parents had always told her.

"Aguamenti!" she exclaimed, then watched water pour out of the end of her wand and into her cauldron. Elisabetta sighed as she watched her cauldron fill up, wondering how she was going to get through the class. This question remained with her as, her cauldron now one-third full, she began preparing the other ingredients to go into it.

"This is gross...this is so gross...my uniform is going to be ruined by this stuff." complained Elisabetta, adding powdered feather and fungus, just remembering to put her gloves on before stirring everything together. The last thing she wanted was to have her skin all messed up by some stupid potion that wasn't coming together the way it was supposed to come together. Instead of looking...what was the word?...homogenized or homogenese or whatever it was, it was looking rather cement-like. She threw up her hands in exasperation.

"This is ridiculous." she mumbled to herself, stirring her cement-like potion to no avail. "How are we supposed to do this potion? We've only just started classes!" Elisabetta complained loudly. "Ugh!"

Benjamin was staying quiet, figuring it was best given his classmates seemed to have a better grasp on the topic. The second year Gryffindor did take notes on what was being said, careful to record what was deemed positive from the potions master and could be useful in the process. It was exciting though, all this talk of dragons and fire and replicating it. He also couldn't help the curiousity that peaked when mention of people being allowed to demonstrate it when they were done. Cool!

Finished with the list, Ben got up from his chair to retrieve what he needed from the professor's desk. The feathers, fungus and piece of fire shell. Careful with his items in his gloved hands, the second year returned to his workstation to begin the brew.

"Scourgify..." he cast quietly on the inside of the cauldron, remembering Lafay drilling that in. "Aquamenti," he then added, canceling the spell when there was enough water...maybe just a tad more than directed. When the professor mentioned cleanliness, Benjamin couldn't help but be thankful that he had remembered it. One sigh of relief.

Biting his lip, the young Gryffindor tried his best to remember as the older man went over the next steps. Powdered feathers in water...check. Stiring with wooden stick....check. Heater turned to high heat...check. Ben swallowed listening about the parasites from the fungus. Thank goodness for gloves. He placed it in the mortar now clean again and went about crushing them, counting off the seconds in his head. Next was mixing with water and he was almost tempted to scoop some from cauldron. Instead he added a little with the water spell and shook the mortar, just barelu escaping a spill.

Ooops.

Recovering he moved to add the mixture into the cauldron of water, not quite as calm as he probably should have.

Kace was glad the professor liked his answer. I mean people wanted to get in touch with their inner dragon. Then he heard the professor go into the history and he scribbled some notes down. Scribble....scribble....scribble....then he made some doodles to help him pay attention. Then he lifted up his head and saw he wrote the potion ingredients down and steps.

SPOILER!!: Steps

• 3 goose feathers (chopped WELL that they look like powder)
• 5 centimetre square of parasites (mycosis fungus)
• Roughly 2 centimetre square fire-crab shell (prepared)
• One fire slug
• 8 drops of salamander blood
• Some flobberworm mucus (depends on how much rigidity one wants)

Then he heard he needed to fill his cauldron up with water. But first he needed to clean it. He put his wand out and said, "Scourgify!" and then it was all squeaky clean. Now onto filling his cauldron with water well 1/3 of the way. he put his wand in his cauldron and said, "Aquamenti!" and then his cauldron filled up 1/3 of the way. Nice and perfect. He heard that he could get some ingredients from his desk. He made a note he could get the fire crab shell, the fungus and the feathers. The rest from the potions closet.

He heard the professor make a comment about cleaning the mortars. He smirked and said, "Scourgify!" and then his mortar was all cleaned. He knew not to light his cauldron yet.

Now he heard some instructions to copy down. He need to go up to his desk to get the feathers. He got the three goose feathers and then went back to his desk. He needed to chop them up. He got his knife and chopped them till they were like powder. He added them and stirred clock wise till it looked homogenous. Now he needed to turn the heater on high. He said "Incendio!" and then the fire lit up the cauldron and he felt the heat. It felt good.

Once it was on high, he needed to add the fungus. But he heard he needed the gloves. He reached into his backpack for some gloves and got them on. Then he went to the front of the room and got the fungus. He needed 5 centimetre of it. He measured that and then put it into the mortar. He crushed it for about 30 seconds.

29....28...27...26... and so forth. Then he added a little water and shook it up. Once he saw it was all mixed in, he calmly added it to the potion. He was working up a sweat in here that is for sure.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

He did not notice the amused gazes directed towards his failing. His mind was set on getting this cauldron filled with water as he kept pointing at it and failed each time. He sighed, heavily as he now began to panic as the Professor said they first had to clean their cauldron. Oh wait, no need for panic right now because he knew how to use the cleaning spell! His mother cleaned every day and he would watch her sometimes from on the couch.

Pointing his wand at the cauldron he said "Scourgify" and waited a few seconds. Had it worked? Probably. He had said the incantation right plus he had seen his mother do this all the time. Now the REAL problem was that they were getting to the second part of the potion and he wasn't even finished with the first. His cheeks began to turn red, not from embarrasment but because he was getting nervous...okay maybe a little embarrassment because he was totally failing in front of that potions dude and he had set his mind on becoming one of the best.

But, he thought as he lowered his wand a little. Even the best had to ask for help now and then. He looked at the Professor and bit his lower lip. No...no he couldn't. He instead opened his school bag and took out his pair of gloves and put them on. He then opened the jar of powdered goose feather and stopped. He could not throw them in the cauldron because their was no water yet.

Slowly, almost hesitantly, his arm went up in the air. "Prof.." he stopped and then decided to push his pride aside. "I need ...help...please?" He had said please so that meant he HAD to help right? Ugh he felt like he had let himself down.

Hawthorne got to work on her potion. After cleaning her cauldron she filled it with water then selected the goose feathers, and when they were chopped just the right amount she added them to the water. She then stirred it clockwise as directed, or deosil as her father always told her. She then twisted the knob on the heater. Once it looked as it should she grabbed her mortar and pestle, which she cleaned, and scooped in the fungus. She crushed them not by mashing them pushing the pestle up and down, but by grinding them in a circular motion as she had been shown by her father.

It took a moment for them to be crushed as she liked, but she was patient. She then added the water and swirled it for them to mix, shaking too hard would cause spillage which could cause disaster.

Hawthorne didn't bother to look at the progress of the other students, what they were doing wasn't any of her concern right now. If her father were here to see her he would swear she was in the 'potions zone'. She added the mixture in the mortar into the cauldron, letting it trickle in slowly.

There was a lot going on around her but Ella tried to keep focused, eyes occasionally resting on the loud Gryffindor who seemed to be causing Ian some annoyance. Yeah, we see you, kid. Related to Wade or something, right? Ella didn't see any similarities.

Anyway, moving on. Ella listened carefully and then added in the next steps to her notes.

Scribble. Scribble. Scribble.

SPOILER!!: Ingredients and Instructions

Fire-breathing Potion

•3 goose feathers (chopped WELL that they look like powder)
•5 centimetre square of parasites (mycosis fungus)
•Roughly 2 centimetre square fire-crab shell (prepared)
•One fire slug
•8 drops of salamander blood
•Some flobberworm mucus (depends on how much rigidity one wants)

1) Fill your cauldron 1/3 with water, please, and do not light a fire undernearth.
2) Add the powdered feather and stir clock wise with a wooden stick until it looks homogenous, then turn the heater to high and add culture of mycosis fungus into your mortar.
3) Once they are in the mortar, crush them with pestle for thirty seconds or so, add some water on them and shake the mortar a little for them to mix better with water. Then, add them calmly to the potion.

Powdered feather. Alrighty, then. Ella added in the correct measurement before cleaning her wooden stirrer. Cleanliness was important, as the potions dude had reminded them, not that anyone who'd experienced Lafay should ever forget. Then she stirred clockwise until everything looking copacetic.

Before her gloves went on, Ella noticed the younger boy (DuckyLinJi) she'd met at the beehives asking for help. The head girl smiled a little and wandered over, careful not to disturb anyone else in the process. "Hey," She said quietly, giving him a reassuring smile. She saw that he had no water yet and nodded, pulling out her wand. "The spell is Aguamenti, yeah? You point your wand and concentrate on what you want to happen. So...Aguamenti!" And the cauldron began to fill with water. "When you're done, simply say, Finite." And the water stopped. Noting how down on himself the boy looked, the blonde whispered, "It took me ages to get it right. I bet you'll have it way before I did." And with that, she went on her way.

...

Back to her work. Ella pulled on her gloves and handled the heat with a clear, "Incendio!" Then it was time to add the mucus to the mortar. But...not before she cleaned the mortar and pestle. Cleaning always came first. "Scourgify...scourgify." And then in went the mycosis fungus.

She crushed them as she counted down the thirty seconds, being sure to concentrate on what she was doing. Then she carefully added some water, not wanting anything to overflow. After giving the mortar a little shake to make sure everything was mixed, that was added to the potion too.

Ian had completed his fire making and cleaned his mortar and pestle. That part he didn't want to risk. Who wanted parasitic fungi on themselves that made you smell bad? Scourgify!

Satisfied, he went to crushing the fungus while wearing the proper protective equipment. While he may have wished the parasite to live on Gryffie boy, he didn't want it on himself. 28..29..and 30. He finished the crush work on the fungus and scraped it into the cauldron.

*Romulus was already putting his gloves on before the professor explained the hazards that can come with using mycosis fungus. He had heard stories from his older cousins about the smells.
Next he started to go down the list of what to do. He was very pleased that he had taken vocabulary as a fun game. He highly doubted many of his fellow classmates would know what homogenous meant.

Right so he got started. Add powdered goose feather. Stir clockwise until it looks homogenous and then turn the heater to high. Done. Next?
Get your pestle and mortar, crush the parasites for thirty seconds or so, fill the mortar with water, shake it for them to mix better and add it slowly to the potion. Annnnnnnd done. So far so good. Rom waited for the next steps that needed to be done.*

So the Professor didn’t seem to be alarmed by her strong-looks. Honestly that was just the [/i]look[/i] she gave when she was thinking a little too hard. It was similar to the look she gave when playing quidditch and commentating – anything that needed foresight. She knew her eyes had widened and they probably had mischievous light to them when the potion was explained. They were going to learn the fire-breathing potion?

This could come in handy…she could imagine the scenarios where it could be very necessary – like when you don’t have any matches, or a wand available and you need to start a fire to keep warm. Just drink the potion and blow flames on a pile of logs and start an immediate campfire. She could, of course see the issues with it – accidental fires, burning down houses, bedrooms, and even schools. Why was she smiling at this?

Oh. Right. It was because like her boyfriend she herself was a complete and total pyromaniac – maybe just a little less of one then he was.

Taking her wand in hand and sort of twirling it in her fingers as she listened to the questions and answers…was anyone else getting sort of antsy? Did anyone else just want to start making the potion and not answer lame – no mega-lame questions? Oh wait…they were starting! Finally what was that an hour of incessant talking?

She stopped twirling her wand and pointed it at the cauldron. “Scourgify” she pointed and shifted the cauldron making sure it was completely and utterly clean. It was now at least. Carefully she placed it back on the yet unlit burner and pointed her wand again into the depth of the cauldron. “Aguamenti” the water poured from the tip of her wand as if it were the spigot of a sink. “Finite” she muttered as the water filled to one third of the way up. She then took her time to clean off her mortar and pestle, her knives, and stirrers just so be safe. She never knew when she'd need them right?

She didn’t light anything – even if she wanted to light things aflame. She thought it was tedious...honestly, having to go and collect powdered feathers she could have easily chopped them herself until they looked as if they had been ground into a powder in her mortar and pestle…but no, Professor does-it-for you had chopped them for her already. Which might have been a nice thing if she hadn't been excited to make her own powdered feathers. Getting up, rather slowly she skulked her way up to the desk and collected the powder before returning to her seat and adding the feathers into the cauldron she carefully stirred the concoction with a wooden stick until it looked uniform. So, she had to set the heater to high? She thought as she quickly set it, and nothing…right burners needed to be lit right?

“Incendio” she lit the burner and watched as it – with the heater set to high began to warm the potion. She quickly added in the mycosis fungus into her mortar and began to crush them with her pestle. Thirty seconds into it she added some water into her mortar and shook it a bit just in hopes that they would mix a little better. Carefully she moved the fungus-water-mixture over the potion and carefully added it in and then waited.

SPOILER!!: potion notes

Kevin was still feeling down at the fact he had to ask for help ...to the same person who had dragged him to his Head of House and had been angry with him before. This was why he did not wanted to ask for help but he had done it and now he waited for sneer comment or mockery. He seemed like the type in his mismatched colored eyes.

Instead, beehives girl stood next to him all of the sudden and Kevin turned his gaze toward her. COULD HE KISS HER?! no seriously? maybe a hug? Because this meant that he had BRAVELY asked for help from the Professor even though he did not wanted his help and now this girl was helping him. He was so good! "Thats what i did!" he said "Aquamen---" wait...she pronounced it differently, just slightly. "It's with a G?!" he said and slapped his forehead for being so stupid. He watched as she filled his cauldron listened to her whisper of encouragement and then she left.

The Gryffindor blinked but was happy that his cauldron was filled with water now. He followed the girl with his eyes and listened carefully as she said the fire spell. "Incendio" he said as well , mimicking the beehives girl.

Now he could add the goose feathers! His added them and with the wooden spoon that he quickly cleaned first he began to stir. Stir...stir...stir.... He looked next to him, checking if the inside of his cauldron was kind of the same like the rest and it was. He sighed but then got curious. What would happen if he did something else? Would the potion get stronger?

Kevin turned up the heater in thought and turned to grab the mortar with his gloved hands. He cleaned the thing and added the mycosis fungus before crushing the ingrediënt while counting in his head till thirty. He then added a bit of water to the mortar and then dumped the mortar stuff in the cauldron...stuff... And waited for the next instructions.

While trying his best not to annoyingly stick out his tongue at the Professor. Because Gryffindor needed points.

Lana continued to jot down bits and pieces of what was being said. It was after all a bit interesting but her opinion of the lesson on its own was still in the air. The subject matter concerned her for a moment though. The thought of possibly being set ablaze by accident since crossed her mind, but she knew that she would just have to remain on her toes.

Upon seeing the ingredients up on the board, she pulled her Potion Journal out and started to write down everything. It was just a habit to document everything after all those potions lessons with Lafay. It only seemed natural the moment her quill touched the parchment to write her standard opening to the entry. There wasn't any mention of the C's in the lesson, but it was always wise to remember them.

Setting her journal aside, Lana continued to set up her station. Reaching for her cauldron, she examined it and quickly cast scourgify upon it before setting it back atop its stand; before thoroughly cleaning the rest of her supplies. Cleanliness was key!

Once everything was set up properly, she gathered all her ingredients and became with the actual brewing. Reaching for her wand, she aim toward her cauldron and cast "Aquamenti" as she watched it carefully. Once it was a third full, she cast a quick "Finite". Setting her wand to the side, she reached for her carefully measured out goose feather and her wooden stir rod. Once the feather was added, she took the stir rod and became to stir the mixture in the needed clockwise direction as she kept watch over its consistency. Upon seeing its homogeneous appearance, she reached for her wand again and lit the cauldron to the needed temperature with a focused "Incendio".

Next, she turned to her freshly cleaned pestle and mortar. Setting them in front of herself, she pulled on her gloves and begun adding the parasites to the mortar. Once they were all inside, she took to crushing them with her pestle for the needed amount of time. Reaching with her free hand, she added the water and shook. Once it looked fully mixed, she slowly and carefully added it to the cauldron with the rest of the potion.

Once the mixture was added, she took a moment to added her progress to her journal.

SPOILER!!: notes
Ingredients
• 3 goose feathers (chopped WELL that they look like powder)
• 5 centimetre square of parasites (mycosis fungus)
• Roughly 2 centimetre square fire-crab shell (prepared)
• One fire slug
• 8 drops of salamander blood
• Some flobberworm mucus (depends on how much rigidity one wants)

Method:
1. Clean and fill your cauldron a third of the way with water
2. Add powdered goose feather. Stir clockwise until it looks homogenous and then turn the heater to high.
3. Get your pestle and mortar, crush the parasites for thirty seconds or so, fill the mortar with water, shake it for them to mix better and add it slowly to the potion. (Wear gloves for this bit)
Well, first to clean out the cauldron. Lucky Tora hadn't started yet or she would have had to start over from the beginning. Tora flicked her wand out of her pocket and pointed it towards her cauldron. "Scorgify!" the spell effectively got the job done. Now for the water "Aguamenti," she said with a lazy S form. Water spurted and when she guessed the cauldron to be a third of the way full another quick flick of her wand and the water spout stopped.

She jumped to her feet, careful of the cauldron, and headed towards the Professor's desk. Professor Potionsmaster since she couldn't remember his name. Really, she ought to fix that...but later. She gathered the ingredients and returned to her seat, already dropping the the appropriate ingredient (the feathers) into her cauldron. Stir... clockwise. She stirred several times but didn't really pay too much attention to how well stirred it was. A glance told her it was stirred well enough.
Alright. Now to turn the heater up! To high. She did so, a bit quickly and the flame shot from the heater before Tora panicked and flipped it off suddenly. The third year tried again, slowly bringing it up to high while she kept a close eye on it. There is absolutely no need to set the room on fire, she reminded herself.

To move onto the next step, she scorgified her pestle and mortar so they were all clean and measured out roughly five (or maybe more like five and a half) square centimeters of mycosis fungus before pounding it to bits in her mortar. But not before she had put on some gloves. Who would ever want a parasite living on their skin?! She barely breathed throughout the whole process just in case some should get into her lungs and start living there. When she was satisfied with the pulverized product, she used her wand to fill the mortar with a little bit of water and swished it around. It wasn't a lot of water, she didn't want any spills, but it got most of the parasite covered. Now to get this parasite stuff out of here. She had to restrain herself from just dumping it into her cauldron but slowly poured instead. Was that OK?

Cosgrach HOPED they were going to get cleaning right this time, but he was wandering among them nevertheless to check how it was going when he noticed her two rows away from where he was checking. In long strides, he was standing beside her and... yeah. That wasn't what it should be.

She couldn't have done something wrong in the steps though, because those wouldn't give this outcome no matter how wrong she got them. It must be something else. He vanished the thing, and turned to her.

He wasn't angry at all, though. They were just students. He was usually horribly off, and he had 'Professor' in front of his name.

"What did you do incorrectly, do you think?"

LUCKY for her he didn't hear that. LUCKY for her, he saw she didn't crush the fungus before adding them.

Her potion was vanished with immediate effect, of course, and he was with her before she could do anything else.

"You didn't crush your fungus before adding them," he said simply, then stayed there for a few more seconds to see if she needed more assistance.

Cosgrach was about to help that boy without any nasty comments or whatever, but Head Girl beat him to it. He nodded at her encouragingly, then, and watched how she helped him. She took the time to teach him. Good.

"Five points to Hufflepuff."

Cosgrach overheard their explanations, and both were correct. He turned to class.

"Your friends here explained it well. It means 'to look the same in every part'. Take five points each." Because it was a hard thing to speak to the crowd in such cases. Cosgrach knew.

He was... disappointed, though. They truly didn't know what the word meant? What did Laf--Mrs. Lafay used, then?

Wizards. Hmpf.

"Okay, everyone. Please stir counter clock-wise for 7 times with your wooden stirrers and turn off the heater. Let it cool until no vapour is seen. It should take about five minutes to cool. If it takes more than six minutes, vanish the potion and start again." So that was their first check-point.

"Those who got it correct, get your fire crab shell but do not add it. Once done with stirring, get it out and put it away on some tissues for it not to get the half-done potion on your table." Not that it would hurt at this point, but he didn't want to clean sticky shells off the desks afterwards either.

They KNEW it was pricey, right?

OOC: The class will continue 8 hours later.
