The class looks the same with two little-but-effective changes: instead of stools, there are proper chairs with soft cushions to sit and lean back on. The Professor cares about his students' posture, apparently, because they are charmed to take the most comfortable shape and height once a student is seated.
The second change is the walls: they are now a soft, calming blue. He is desperate to avoid blasting cauldrons, and muggles claim this colour calms people down.
He opens the door 15 minutes before the class time and sits at his desk to wait for the students to arrive, with a neutral expression on his face.
OOC: Come in, take your seats! The class will resume approximately 7 hours later. You may chat among yourselves, but please don't go overboard with it. Thanks!
The lesson is in progress now, so do not post your late arrival and just RP as if you have been there all along!
Potion progress
• 3 goose feathers (chopped WELL that they look like powder)
• 5 square centimetres of parasites (mycosis fungus)
• Roughly 2 square centimetres fire-crab shell (prepared)
• One fire slug
• 8 drops of salamander blood
• Some flobberworm mucus (depends on how much rigidity one wants)
1. Fill your cauldron 1/3 with water.
2. Add powdered goose feather. Stir clockwise until it looks homogenous and then turn the heater to high.
3. Get your pestle and mortar, crush the parasites for thirty seconds or so, fill the mortar with water, shake it for them to mix better and add it slowly to the potion.
4. Stir counter clock-wise for 7 times and turn off the heater. Let it cool until no vapour is seen. This should take about 5 minutes.
5. Take the fire crab shell but do not add it! Hold it with a metal spoon, lower it nicely into the potion just inside the surface—make sure it doesn’t splash water AT ALL—then start stirring 1 time clockwise, 1 time counter clockwise for 12 times in total. Each stir should take about ten seconds for it to spread thoroughly. Once done with stirring, get it out and put it away on a tissue.
6. Wait for another minute and cut the slug vertically into two in the meantime, add the pieces and stay away from the cauldron as far as you can. If you’ve done everything correctly, the surface should explode harmlessly and start burning. Put it out with your breath ONLY, so you’d better hurry before the fire spreads to the whole surface.
7. Add 8 drops of salamander blood. Alternate between two stirs counter-clock wise, two stirs clock-wise. Repeat for four times. (So you should stir 16 times in total.)
8. Add flobberworm’s mucus to keep it in your mouth better (no more than a tablespoon, not a must).
9. Enjoy.

Professor Culloden. Culloden. Cull-o-den. Got it.
... Dragons?
... Which was a topic a lot of people knew a lot about. Alec's eyebrows shot up as he listened to all of the answers. Were lots of people dragon enthusiasts? Or... was he just slow in thinking up of a good enough answer? ... Both? Both. They were great creatures, after all. The boy was just... surprised. That was all.
Was he going to try and offer something different? Yeah. "Professor?" he started, raising his hand in the air, "Erm... aside from what the others have said, dragons can be easily spotted so they have to be kept in dragon reserves to protect them from being seen and... to protect them from being poached." Was there anything else? "I heard that one is kept in Gringotts to guard some of the high-security vaults."
The next question didn't require as much thinking as the last one. "As for their traits... I think it'd be great to be able to fly without the use of a broom. Or... or have the power to protect those you care about even more." Protective hide and all.

"Before we start brewing, let’s have a little chat about dragons, shall we? What are they, what is special about them? Which trait of a dragon would you like to have?"
Well, now that the ice was broken between the two of them, per Sophie's office visit, the second year Slytherin was fairly okay with the start of Potions class post-grandma. So, onto other things...
Dragons? She thought about them for a moment then raised her hand. "Their parts are really useful in potions," she said. Well, this was a Potions class. "Just their blood alone has twelve different uses." That's what was special about them. "I don't think I'd like to have any dragon traits. We use their parts for nearly everything." Pause. "It'd be cool to be larger than life, though."
The Professor, that needed botox when he glared, it was his lesson and as Abbi sat in her desk she seemed rather keen to see how well he knew his potions. Lafay was a good teacher but a VERY scary one at imes, but hey wasn't there a thing that said the scariest people were really the nicest....er...okay that didn't sound like a Lafay. Maybe it didn't apply to her, but maybe with Cullo, whatever it was, it might have worked that way. She'd have to see.
DRAAAAGOOOOOONS. This was going to be a GOOD lesson. YEP. The little Hogwartian listened intently and eventually put ehr hand up.
"Dragons are awesome. That is all, Professor." Need say more?

Fern was cute, did she know? Ella tried not to laugh when the younger badger squeaked over the chair changing form and was somewhat successful. She couldn't however, help the smile that tugged on the corners of her lips.

OOC: The class has started, so please don't post your characters arriving late! Just pretend they have been there all along.
It will continue 12 hours later.
And then class was starting and they were talking about dragons! DRAGONS! Ella approved so much. She was also quite curious as to what they'd be doing regarding this particular subject. Hm.
Lots of classmates had already offered up good answers and the blonde listened attentively to each, offering a smile or a nod to those she agreed with. Then it was her turn to share.
"Dragons are reptiles that can fly and are able to breathe fire from around the age of six months old." Thank you, baby Roro!dragon, for the information. "There blood is particularly interesting, like Sophie said, because it has several uses, though it is expensive to get your hands on it." Metaphorically speaking. Ella wasn't down for rubbing her hands in dragon blood or whatever. Ick! "Also, I think it'd be pretty cool to have the strength that a dragon has."
"Before we start brewing, let’s have a little chat about dragons, shall we? What are they, what is special about them? Which trait of a dragon would you like to have?"
Sarah raised her hand, "they learn to fly at around one year, similar to the time bracket that humans begin to walk.Their eggs are non-tradable items but their horns are class B tradable material and when powdered horn is used in some potions" Sarah said. "I agree with the others, I would love to be able to fly without needing a broom... like flying unaided"
Lady? That was a new one. Not that Adelaide minded. It was polite and that was all that mattered. Not to mention he just seemed generally excited to be here. She sat back in the chair, already in awe at how it had morphed to fit her perfectly. Yeah. She could get used to this.
...and now for the lesson to start. Dragons. Here mind thought back to the book she'd bought over the summer that she'd already read through a couple of times. Dragons were pretty dang awesome in her book. Addi raised her hand, taking into account everyone's answers. "Dragons are magical creatures, but a lot of muggles have stories and fables about them. They breathe fire and the reason they exist in so many muggle stories is because they're hard to hide because they're so big and dangerous. Their heartstrings can be used as cores in wands." Simple over view of dragons and a little something she learned from her internship this past summer.
He surveyed them all, and clapped once to get their attention.
"Good afternoon, everyone. My name is Cosgrach Culloden,"not grandma Lafay, Sophie,"and I am your new potions professor." What else should he say? Anything? Questions? Okay.
"Before we start brewing, let’s have a little chat about dragons, shall we? What are they, what is special about them? Which trait of a dragon would you like to have?"
Asher sat back and watched. Most of what the others were saying is what he would say. But he would throw in his two cent "They are useful in most things that we make and have. For example we all use Dragon hide gloves for Herbology. As far as traits, breathing fire would be cool." Very cool. Well.... as cool as fire would be. "I don't think that they would be particularly good pets. Dangerous and the litter box wouldn't be an easy task."
Nigel was still relaxing in his chair and heard the first question. Right Dragons with their XXXXX classification. Cool stuff. He probably took to much time thinking it over because by the time he was ready to speak his answer was already said. He did not want to say the same thing twice.
Dragons were pretty awesome Nigel had to agree. Even the one named Bunny in Gringotts. Though Nigel wondered what dragons had to do with the rest of the lesson.
Curiouser and Curiouser.

Adrienne entered the Potions classroom and noticed one thing first off- chairs! Well that was certainly a welcome difference from Lafay's level of comfort for the classroom, much as she had enjoyed her lessons. So far this seemed promising, at least. If things went terribly, at least she'd be comfortable while she was bored. "Professor," she said, "Welcome to Hogwarts." She was aware she was practically regurgitating what everyone else had said, but she didn't have anything else to say other than a cutting remark about the colour of the walls, and she didn't want to get on his bad side already. Instead, she took a moment to look around for someone she knew and wouldn't hate spending the next hour sitting next to.
Ah! The second year Snake, what was his name again? Cutty? As antagonistic as he and Tora may have been, the boy had definitely been very polite to her on the train, and he spoke a bit of French, which made things interesting. She plopped herself into a chair next to him and couldn't help but grin at how comfortable it was. Ahh yes, she was going to enjoy this lesson.
"Cutty, haven't seen you since the train," she said, by way of a greeting. "How've you been?" May as well chat a bit before the class started, after all everyone else seemed to be doing it and from appearances, at least, this professor was going to be a lot less... strict about such matters than Lafay was.
Cutty turned to see the little French girl from the train addressing him. He watched as she took a seat next to him. "Comme ci comme ça." He barely managed to finished before catching the remnants of the spill the tall Slytherin boy took. A horrible grin started to manifest upon Cutty's ape-like face. "Adrienne? Did you see that?" He said breathily, sound quite a suppressed amount of happy.
Dragons. Oooh, would they be doing a dragon-based potion perhaps? Cutty thought about all of the things dragons had the ability to do. Was anyone's animagus form known to be a dragon? The ability was rare, he knew that much and rarer still seemed the likelihood that you'd be a dragon?? Why else would Professor Culloden...Cutty wrote his name down for the sake of getting it right each time he'd see him (as he sort of liked the bow and planned on maintaining it even if only on his half)...mention possessing it's characteristics as if it were never done?
He was still snickering over the spillout down by the older Slytherdude and it put him in the mood to be quite judgmental now as he listened to the answers given by others.

Cutty almost did a double take at some lil Puff kid's reply. His brows furrowed in confusion, though he looked mostly irritated. What??! WHAT did she just say??

But her hand still went up, even if she planned to skip the definition bit, since others had already taken care of that part. "They're special because they're useful, professor. I can't think of any other creature that contributes to the wizarding world with nearly every part of its body in the way that they can. Hide, horns, blood, claws, dung, heart, meat, even egg shells. You name it."
And which trait would she like to have? The first thing that came to mind was their wings and flight, but there were brooms for that.
"I'd want their inability to be domesticated, sir. Dragons are free even when they aren't."
So what did this have to do with potions?
Oh.
She was smart!
Cutty made a note of this most fantastic thing she had pointed out about dragons.

So, she was sat near the back, notebook opened and quill carefully outlining a sketch she'd just completed of the new treehouse...
When she heard class beginning, Ves quietly closed it and put her best effort forward to focus on the lesson. That was probably half her problem. Her mind always seemed to wander in these situations...
Dragons, tho. Vesper loved dragons. Mhm.
"They're beautiful and fierce."...because they were. That was a dream of hers, actually...to go to a reserve and sketch the dragons in person. Especially the Antipodean Opaleye. She desperately wanted to see one of those. Also, was she speaking kinda low? Yea, a little. Everyone else was talking, though, and it was easy to lose ones voice in a crowd. She did this often enough.
"I'd like to be more fierce." Mhm.
He's seen her on the pitch. She didn't need anymore fierceness.

She could already fly and she didn't need huge wings being all cumbersome when she wanted to walk around. The fire might come in handy sometime... but then again, she had a wand for that didn't she? (She wouldn't admit to herself that being able to breathe fire coupled with an equally hot and fiery temper was not a great idea, but the thought was there in the back of her mind) So what were some other characteristics of dragons? They had magical blood, but Tora didn't particularly want to be sliced open and drained every time someone wanted some just because it was more convenient than getting it from a real dragon, so magical blood was out. What she needed was something to help her along as a human being.
What about eyes? They would be immensely helpful as dragons could see much better than humans and it wasn't a dangerous feature to have (like the fire). It wouldn't cause people to hunt her down (like the blood) nor was it annoyingly bulky (like the wings). She smiled in triumph and raised her hand to respond with a happy "I think having dragon eyes would be the best," before doodling a rather poor drawing of a dragon's eye in the corner of her thus far empty parchment paper.
'Why eyes, Tora Gallaway? Why eyes?' That...seriously! That was one of the strangest answers given by a student or a professor Cutty had ever heard in the classes.
He'd never been to Professor French's Arithmancy classes.

Oh, was he in the right classroom? It was very different in here, which was a bit... weird. And the new professor seemed a bit weird, too. Theo wasn't even going to try and pronounce his name.
Uhhhhh... "I would like to breath fire." It would warn off his many, many enemies.
What did this have to do with potions? Were they cooking up dragons?

”Dragons are creatures that exist not only in the magical world but they are referenced in the muggle world as well…in the Asian art they are a symbol of imperial power and strength…and also good luck” she took a quick breath before adding the final bit that she knew about dragons in art, that is, ”in Chinese art in particular they are strongly associated with water and they were believed to be the rules of moving bodies of water.”
A muggleborn, perhaps? Or a muggle enthusiast? Cosgrach noted her hard gaze, but he wasn't intimidated. He was on a stage now, kind of, so he had to get used to those anyway. The girl's answer was a nice one, though, and he nodded at her--his approval obvious on his face.
He... should probably learn her name.

Cosgrach's face fell a little. This one wanted protection MORE than flying or fire that was generally associated with a Gryffindor's sense of... adventure. Seriously. It was alarming. A boy as young as him shouldn't want that.
"That's right," he said nevertheless, because he had to show he wasn't disappointed with the information part.

All? Cosgrach raised his eyebrows and chuckled in amusement. Surely he was a Gryffindor! An exemplary one too.
"Okay, young man. We'll see what we can do."

...was that possible, though? He was going to look that up.

Nice answer, yes. Cosgrach nodded approvingly, then grinned at the girl.
"Those two would really be amazing to have, huh?" Why need anything else, then?

A Slytherin! Niiiice. No matter how many years had passed, Cosgrach still felt that excitement. Sort of. He was getting it back, at least.
"Right." Fly? Cool. He nodded.

"But it's their weakest point?" She was the Ravenclaw, though, so she probably had her logical logic.

The next question didn't require as much thinking as the last one. "As for their traits... I think it'd be great to be able to fly without the use of a broom. Or... or have the power to protect those you care about even more." Protective hide and all.
"Yes?" Cosgrach turned to the voice and was pleased to see the Head-Huffie was answering. They ought to be an example to the shy ones, after all, before anyone else.
"Very thoughtful and terrific," he muttered to the Head Boy. This was yet another point brought up, and it was a good one. Cosgrach nodded in ultimate approval.
Head Boy had head.

"Correct," he said to the blood, and couldn't help but smile. Ambitious, wasn't she? Cosgrach... didn't know what to say, honestly.
This was another first, experienced with her contribution.

Another silent one here. Well, Cosgrach hoped they would be more willing to protect the cauldrons and everyone here while brewing.

Fire, he said? Cosgrach grinned at him too, but this grin was less wider than the previous ones. He was the Slytherin prefect, after all. Cosgrach didn't want him to think he was cheeky.
He clapped hands once again for them to concentrate as he walked to the front of the class and addressed the whole class.
"You generally mentioned flying, protection, offspring care, skin, eyes, blood and fire," he said, "and some of you wanted a long life. Well, some traits are achievable, some not, sadly." He made a face. "Today, we will focus on fire-breathing. Do you think it's possible to breathe fire exactly like a dragon? What might be this fire like?"

Ian noticed the professor pause after he answered, but no comment from the professor.
At this next question, Ian pondered for a moment. Was it possible? He thought to himself more. It would be a challenge physically because of the nature of fire and expelling it from one's mouth. How do you do it without burning oneself?
He raised his hand and answered, I think it's certainly possible, but it would be tough not to burn oneself. I would think the fire would have to be more charm-like than to actually breathe fire from one's mouth
Yay for correct answers. Not to mention Culloden didn't seem so bad. Not to mention Adelaide was really liking where this lesson seemed to be heading. Especially since they were focusing on fire breathing and such. She raised her hand once again. "I'm going to take a guess and say that it is possible, since we're talking about it." Because that only made sense. They wouldn't talk about it if they couldn't do it right? As for what the fire might be like she wasn't in her creative mood today.

Theo's mouth fell open. THEY WERE DOING THE FIRE-BREATHING THING?!! He suddenly liked this professor a lot, but he still wanted to know what this had to do with potions. Unless it was a fire-making potion. Gaaaaaaaasp....
He raised his hand, "It would be fake fire, right? Otherwise it would burn us. Is it REALLY possible, sir?" He wasn't sure, but he was excited.

Good. No chopping up dragons. The way he said it though, it sounded like they were going to chop up an animal. Gwen shuddered and tried not to think of her two lizards and a dog at her dad's house. Was it possible to breath fire like a dragon? Well, until two and a half minutes ago she hadn't been aware that dragons existed, and now the students were going to breath fire. She nodded slowly. "I'm starting to believe that anything is possible," she muttered under her breath, letting the more confident students take the question.

Fire breathing? That was cool. As for whether or not they could manage breathing fire like a dragon, Ella wasn't sure. Their bodies clearly weren't made for anything quite so dangerous but there were certainly ways around that.
"You could probably breathe fire if there was some way to protect yourself from the damage that would do to you. There is a fire protection potion I read about, it's meant to make your body feel like ice. Perhaps if some of those ingredients were used in the potion, you could successfully breathe fire without hurting yourself."

"Today, we will focus on fire-breathing. Do you think it's possible to breathe fire exactly like a dragon? What might be this fire like?"
Sander smiled widely and would have punched the air with a big YES but decided that it wouldn't be appropriate to do so in this class, so just nodded his head excitedly.
Would it be possible to breathe fire exactly like a dragon and what might this fire be like?
Hmmm...Sander rubbed his chin as he pondered on the questions raised. He thought about the various possibilities before raising his hand to answer.
"Professor I think that it would be possible to breathe fire exactly like a dragon, but unlike a dragon who has just has one specific temperature range, we need to be able to control that ability because I wouldn't want to cough or sneeze and accidentally breath fire out instead."
Yes that would definitely be a requirement.
"So like the spell Incendio where we can control how much fire we are sending out from our wand, the fire we breathe out should be tempered according to what we need it for." Sander paused hoping that he was so far making sense before continuing
"Maybe it could be a light blue flame if you just want a small flame to light a fireplace, to red hot flames, if you want to....like melt a gigantic iceberg that it is in the way of a passenger ship." Sander finished up his answer.
Nigel was indeed paying attention and this was an interesting question. Nigel did not think you could breathe fire without the help of a potion or a spell Nigel did not know about. But a dragon fire potion sounded awesome.
"I agree with Theo and a potion like that could be possible or spell. But i don't know"
Was it really possible?

The Professor seemed pleased with his answer and as Adi grinned back, he decided he liked this man. He seemed cool, too. Ohohoh! Fire breathing! Awesomeee! Adi raised his hand to answer the questions after some thought.
"No to the first question, Professor. Because we might not be able to control the speed and range to which a dragon breathes the fire. Um...'' The second year deliberated on his next answer. ''The fire would be a danger to anything in it's path but not to the person who's doing the fire breathing.'' Er. Total guess work on the last part.
That, of course, made Toby GRIN at the professor, because he was RIGHT. And y'know. He quickly scrawled notes down that other people were saying, adding to them or modifying them whenever the Professor chimed in. Then, when the man started on again, he looked up and... kinda stared again.
But this time he was listening too. He was prepared for the man's very nice face.
Oh, um. Fire. Yes. Tobias blinked his brain into action but still kinda... looked at the professor. When he had an answer, he raised his hand again and spoke.
"Fire needs fuel, right? Usually? And muggles sometimes use gas for fires, and bodies naturally produce gas. But I don't think the flammable stuff is what comes out of peoples' mouths." Ahem. Maybe moving on from that. "But the fire that dragons breathe could be because they can breathe out and ignite a flammable gas somehow?"
Toby was babbling, and he kind of realised it. WHAT was going ON with him?
"Also there's a few things muggles use, that I can't remember the name of, like where, say, if you put it on your hand and light it, it would be on fire and burn up and your hand wouldn't be hurt. Maybe something like that would help us breathe fire, 'cause we don't have the kind of skin that keeps us protected."
The Hufflepuff finally stopped talking and sat back a bit in his comfy comfy chair, looking hopeful and eager to please. Yes? Maybe? Good thinking?

Thoughtful and terrific. And a nod. Alec couldn't help but grin at that.
... Wait. Breathing fire? Did he think it was possible? The boy opened his mouth and was about to raise his hand in the air when... he paused. Was it possible? His grey-blue eyes looked from person to person as they answered in turn before he looked at his desk and tried to imagine fire coming out of his mouth. Thinking strategies.
His eyes flew over to the Potions Master and his hand went up in the air again. "What about all the saliva we produce? Or... or the glands in our throats that secret mucus? I mean... that would affect the amount of fire we breathe out, right?" Did mucus affect fire? ... He... didn't know. And he was probably thinking too much into this. Maybe. "But if it's possible and if there's a potion... or a spell for it, maybe it'll be similar to a dragon's. Not exactly the same but... similar." Smile.
He clapped hands once again for them to concentrate as he walked to the front of the class and addressed the whole class.

Asher grinned, he liked this professor a lot.... so far. One that understood his sense of humor. He listened as the others speak. Then when Professor Cullodenqcw continued with the lesson. He raised his hand, "I think it is possible. I just don't think it would be like real fire. Maybe more like a synthetic type of fire." Well that's what he thought. Actually fire sounded way to dangerous. Nothing wrong with that, he just didn't want his face burnt. It was too good looking.

Wow. This chair sure was comfortable. Cat could almost nap in it if she wasn't in an actual class. She didn't quite fancy getting a detention so early into the term and certainly not in her first class, no.
Fire breathing? Hmm. People did do fire breathing, but not exactly like dragons do, the fire didn't come from like inside their bodies. "I'd think it would be rather painful, if it was real fire breathing exactly like dragons." Like, serious. She didn't think she wanted real fire in her body. "But human bodies don't have the same making as dragons with their fire making... bodily functions." She'd been curious once and looked it up, but she didn't quite remember the specific wording.
"I suppose lots of impossible things are possible with magic, though." So... sure? Sure, it was possible.
Scales were popular, it seemed, more popular than wings! or fire!
What had these kids been through that made them want protection so much?
"Let's make that 'most of the time', because it is nearly impossible for us to harm them," he said with a nod and turned his attention at the Gryffindor boy.
He clapped hands once again for them to concentrate as he walked to the front of the class and addressed the whole class.

Emma grinned. Well, at least she was sort of right, right? She watched the professor carefully as he informed them that they were going to BREATHE FIRE LIKE A DRAGON. Oh Merlin. That sounded dangerous. But fun. She could only hope that the Griffies and the Snakes wouldn't get too cocky with their fire and burn the whole place down.. O___o
"Well, I believe it certainly could be possible professor, but I'm not sure how exactly we would be able to control the temperature, and how much would be coming out, like dragons do.. and then there's the worry that someone would try holding it in and then like EXPLODE or burn their insides or something.. and uh.. that really doesn't sound like too much fun.. but perhaps that sort of thing is possible..." She added, biting her lip nervously.
She should have been a puffer. Fire gave her so much anxiety.
Oh so they were talking about dragons today? He was interested and looked up from his notebook. He wondered what was so special about them? Kace thought of the idea in his head, Well they are mystical and they are know for various ingredients like dragons blood. That is always used in potions somewhat right? He was about to say it before the professor moved and the students said some of his answers already.

Kace noted some of the main ideas that the class had. He knew he would want the flying, protection and skin from the dragon. He didn't know about the fire though. Dragons had long lives? That was new to him.
HOLD THE PHONE! They were going to focus on fire breathing today? NOW that was COOL! Kace was excited and smirking. Then the professor asked an interesting question, could it be possible to breathe fire like a dragon. Kace thought about it and gave his opinion. "Professor i think it is possible to breathe fire...but i do not know exactly like a dragon. Like the temperature i do not think our mouths would be able to handle it. I mean i think fire breathing would be over like....100 degrees." he shrugged coming up with a reasonable number. "Unless you have a potion that can control it?" he questioned the professor.
