Default Ancient Runes Lesson I - Rune of Thor

Early and first thing in the morning after breakfast was the best time for Ancient Runes, the students will have open fresh minds and full stomachs. The classroom was arranged traditionally, Ab made sure nothing was hazardous to the kids when he redecorated the room. The desks and chairs were neatly organized in parallel five rows, that's one side of the big classroom. As you walk through the door and to your left is the professor's desk and blackboard. Professor Botros is sitting on his chair writing something on a parchment.

For this lesson, there is a small pile of mysterious tools next to each desk, it hardly reaches up to your knees. A piece of cloth is draped over to conceal what's underneath it. "Do not touch the pile next to your seat" is written on the blackboard behind the professor. If you do try to remove it with your hand, you'll feel a slight pinch. Do not touch.

Greet your new teacher, take a seat, write your name and year on the piece of parchment set on your table, and wait for the lesson to start. Please stay quiet and do not speak.

ooc:The class has officially STARTED. Don't announce your arrival but pretend you've been here all along. ^.^

Class progress:
- What are runes? What does the word 'rune' mean?
- Who is the person in the drawing? What is he holding? Why would we discuss them both in class?
- Identify some of the runes on the blackboard, and find their meanings.
- The solution to the trick question, rune of Uruz, and activity time!
- Extra question (courtesy of Gryffindor Captain) and Activity is still in progress!
- The End.

"Runes, as many of you have already noted, are letters in a family of ancient alphabets known as runic alphabets. They were used as a method of communication across Scandinavia and in other Germanic nations from around the 3rd century CE to around the 13th century, when they were displaced by the Roman alphabet." He dug a bit into the Slytherin's shoulder while turning around to the blackboard and waving his wand to write the main points of the upcoming lecture. "The primary runic alphabet is often known as Futhark, in a reference to its first six letters. The runic alphabet was probably derived from the Etruscan alphabet which was once in wide use in Italy, and it characterized by angular characters, with no curves or soft edges like those found in the Roman alphabet." His face turned to the students, making sure they were writing down notes, and continued, "This is common to alphabets developed during this period, since they can be readily chiseled into stone."
Hah, the guy who clearly loved his girlfriend had gotten himself into trouble. If Wade wasn't surprised at that no points had been taken, he would've cheered that guy on... but from the looks of it, being used as a personal cane for Botros seemed fair enough.. Wait, did Professor Botros just dig his nails into that guy's shoulder?? Wade squinted his eyes slightly just to see if that true..

.. Oh great, notes. Glancing at the board and back at his empty notebook, Wade sighed as he reluctantly jotted some of it down. A good nap would be greeting him if this kept up long enough.

Glancing up lazily, Wade's eyes widened at the portrait. Ahh, he definitely recognized that one. "That would be Thor, the infamous hammer-wielding God in Norse mythology.. said to be the protector of mankind."

O___o

Oh Merlin..

Violet practically hopped out of her seat when the Professor had suddenly burst yelling Richard Turner's name. She had no idea what was going on at first, since at that precise moment before he yelled, Violet was in the middle of scribbling away notes trying to keep up with the notes. One thing she did know now was...to never cross this Professor..EVER! And Violet couldn't help but feel embarrassed for Richard, especially since he had to since right on the Professor's desk..how terribly awkward and humiliating that must feel..

Before she could think another thought, the Professor had went back into his lecture and Violet's eyes immediately went back to her parchment writing away quickly as ever. She must have been writing so quickly because when she had finished writing she felt her hand cramping afterwards. She was actually massaging it a little bit and rotating her wrist after writing such thorough notes.

The Professor then went on to hold up a picture of this..very big looking man. Holding a Hammer..OH! Where did Violet know him from?! His name was right on the tip of her tongue! Elektra always mentioned him because he was apparently in a lot of her comics, but he wasn't just known for being comics! OH what was it?! AHA! Violet raised her hand and then said politely,"Professor, I believe that is Tor" Wait, it's not Tor! Add the H!
She shook her head quickly correcting herself with the correct answer,"I'm sorry Professor, I mean..His name is THOR..And the tool in which he his holding I believe is a...Hammer?" She then went on calmly,"And if I am not mistaken, he is affiliated with lightning and thunder..As well the fact he is one of the three sons of Odin?"

Bliss listening intently to everything that the Professor said, trying to let it all sink in. She didn't want to think of the stuff again, as she'd probably just mix it up or something silly like that. So she put her thoughts aside and looked carefully at the picture that was being shown. Squint. What was it? Who was was? Bliss looked a little bit closer...

OMGOSHHHHHH.

Bliss knew this! Sort of. Anyway. Hand raised, she quietly cried out, "That's Thor!" BEAM. Genius, wasn't she? OH and what was the instrument in his hand? It was the..M..M..Mjölnir!? MAYBE. Her hand was still raised, so she just went on as if she hadn't stopped. "I believe it's called the Mjölnir and...er, I think, though I'm not sure, that it's got runes on it.....I think," Bliss said. She'd started off confidently, but ended up getting confused and unsure, she might still be completely wrong.

Well...at least she'd tried, right? Yeah?

Mister Turner!!!

Rich supposed that was him. Even though the old man's voice made him cringe a bit, he looked up over his girlfriend's shoulder. Well...maybe the man was not as deaf and blind as he had thought him to be. Was that trouble? Could old men like he be mean enough to throw him into detention for loving a girl or something?

Then...what? Groaning a bit, the Slytherin boy let out a deep sigh. Sitting on an old man's desk for the whole class instead of being with his girlfriend? An old man instead of a pretty girl as his partner for the class? What kind of a losing was that? Trying not to roll his eyes, he reluctantly stood up and picked up his bag only to walk to the old man's desk. Then he dropped the bag next to the man's desk and flopped himself on the the old man's desk facing everyone in the class.

He would not be complaining if the teacher had been an attractive woman but this was embarrassing. He sat silent as the old man professor went on talking and talking about this Odin guy. ''And who says this Odin dude is qualified enough to bring order and clarity to our lives?" he murmured not really feeling comfortable carrying half of the old man's weight on his shoulder. He glanced back at the blackboard and some drawing of a dude with and ugly face and a hammer looked back at him.

Great...

As Belle was taking notes on the Runes, Belle heard the professor yell at a Slytherin. Oooh he was in big trouble. He was even asked to sit in the front of the class. This was going to be an interesting lesson that is for sure...She dared not cross the professor in any way possible.

Then Belle saw the professor putting more notes on the board. Belle copied them down in a fast pace. She even made short hand notes. Then he asked a question and showed a picture on the board. Belle remembered studying him. Belle raised her hand, "Professor, that god is called Thor. He is the god of thunder and lightning. He also has that hammer to summon the lightning. He is one of the three sons of Odin." Belle knew about that much. Then something clicked in her head. "Also he is associated with Loki!"

Laura looked at the guy in the picture, she had no idea who it could be, she raised her hand, "Professor is it you with a hammer, when you were younger?" Laura smiled. "Your going to some sort of fancy dress party right?" Laura wasn't sure if it was right or not but she decided to have a guess, it was a picture he had so it could be his family, maybe his father or grandfather if it wasn't him.

That picture. It looked so familiar to McCall. But who was it? She scanned her brain for any recollection of the person in the picture. She knew it was definitely some sort of mythical creature. Her father talked about gods and goddesses all the time. Aha! His name was Thor. Well, at least she thought it was. She raised her hand as soon as the answer popped into her head.

"Professor, forgive me if I'm wrong, but I think that is Thor. Thor is the god of thunder and lightning, and I think he's the god of oak trees too. He is the son of Odin." But why was he holding that stupid hammer? She had no clue what the hammer was called, but she knew it was some long foreign word. "And he's holding a hammer. I'm not sure of the specific name, and I'm not sure quite why he carries it, but if I had to guess, it was probably for him to use as a weapon?"

Oh wow, now that sounded stupid. Why would a god use a hammer as a weapon?

curly haired prefect - "sometimes I get angry!" - 30/90 - *chicken emoji* - probably @ Disney - I speak dog

OOOH Alex knew that guy! He knew him as a superhero who had a psychotic brother and loved some American actress, but he knew that wasn't the right answer. He was talking about gods and goddesses and stuff.

He raised his hand. "That's Thor, God of thunder and lightning. He's a Norse god and since ruins come from those Scandinavian countries, they must be related in some way. That thing he's holding is his hammer. And I guess...you use a hammer to chisel things in the stone and make the runes?" he said, wrinkling his eyebrows. "In the comic books he uses it to beat up enemies," he added. Just thought they should know that.

Poor Rich. Getting scolded for loving someone. NOT. He deserved it, but Rora didn't. Kat felt bad for the seventh year snake. Sighs. So like, Botros showed them a photo of an old guy with a big hammer. He was familiat, but it also made Kat think if that was Botros with a longer beard dressed up. Well, that is weird.

Ok so that was that Muggle hero. "That is Thor and his hammer, Mjölnir, Kat said. It had runes on it though but Kat didn't know what it said. She hasn't seen his hammer apparently. She wasn't Thor to know.

It was Thor.

The reason Dylan knew it was Thor was because he had been and still was heavily into comic books...and "The Mighty Thor" just happened to be one of his favorites as a younger man. Comics were an integral part of any young person life...So, the Slytherin Captain felt no shame.

Nerds FTW.

Raising his hand, again..."Thor, sir." THE MIGHTY THOR! "...and what he's holding is his hammer." Duh... "...I know that there were some tie-ins to the Younger Futhark with writing his hammer's name on pendants and things of that nature, and replacing the letters with corresponding runes."

Mjölnir!

Yea, he was geeking out a bit. Whatever.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Eeeh, Botros...right... "I'm sorry professor" he apologized as his cheeks flushed red.
Daichi opened his notebook and scribbled down some answers that he might need for homework later. He looked up however when the Professor shouted a name.

Turner.

The Slytherin knew that name though he did not know from which house he was. He hoped it wasn't the Snake house.... But when the guy stood up and walked to the desk Daichi couldn't help but give an dissapointed look when he saw the badge on Turners robe. Great, Slytherin... He was glad that the Professor hadn't taken points.

Then his gaze went to the blackboard when a picture of a person was drawn on. Who the guy was and what the thing he was holding for? Daichi scratched his head and his black hair moved a bit on his head. After some thinking, the Slytherin came to the conclusion that he had no idea. But as a Prefect he thought that he needed to say AN answer.

"That's Thor" he said. "and that's a hammer, i think. I have no idea what it is for though"

Aaaall he knew about Runes? That wasn't nearly all! His dad was a Curse-Breaker after all.

THOR! IT WAS THOR!

West grinned to himself and then popped his hand up. "That's Thor and his hammer, Mjollnir, which is pretty cool like, it means 'that smashes', and now there are similar words in other languages what mean lightning, like 'molniya' in Russian." It was cool how they were all linked, words and stuff. "Brok and Eitri made it for him and it flashes lightning whenever it gets thrown."

Wow, I've seen that picture before, I think at a museum in my home town, but who is he? Oichi thought for a moment and responded, "Thats Thor professor, I have seen that picture at a museum in my home town.".

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

Oh lookit, floating stuff. Lex watched curiously as the things landed in the next seat then a girl...HaiGirlSheDidn'tKnow...came over and was mumbling some kind of thanks.

"Um sure, no problem!" BEAM, even if she didn't do anything.

...

Old man had a temper on him. Now there's something you didn't see everyday. Most old people were just adorable and helpless but this one, oh no, this one was different. She wasn't so sure if she thought that was cool or slightly disturbing but for now she'd go with cool because it served Richard right for getting all gross in class. Sigh. Some people would just never learn. She held a new respect for Old Guy. Yup.

.......and there it went...right out the window.

He was talking about stuff she didn't particularly care about. The girl sat back in her seat and pretended to listen as he droned on. If she hadn't just woken up she might have fallen asleep, but as it were she was now awake and rather bored. Her interest was however peaked when he showed them a picture. This meant another guessing game.

She would scribble her notes before attempting.

She tilted her head and looked over at the picture. She. Had. No. Idea. Lex sat a bit straighter in her seat and listened to everyone else shout the answer. If enough of them guessed the same thing then she would say it too. And there it was! Lex proudly raised her hand to say everyone else's answer, you know, that way he wouldn't be able to complain. "That, Professor is Thor, yeah and well it's obvious he has a hammer. Everyone says it's name is Mjollnir so I'm guessing that's true too." She thought about his next question. "Weeeeeell, you said the runes were all German like or something and the dude looks pretty German-y sooooo, I'm guessing they tie in together." BEAM.

The little Ravenclaw about flew out her seat at the sudden sound of Professor Botros scolding the Slytherin boy. Holy crow! How did he even hear that?! She hadn't heard any whispering, but apparently this man had the hearing of an eagle. Was he in Ravenclaw? she wondered momentarily before looking at the picture he was showing them now.

She raised her hand to answer, "Is that Thor with his hammer? I know he's the son of Odin, so that could tie it in to our lesson. And I'm sure his hammer must have runes on it, but I'm not sure which ones. Maybe Uruz for strength?"

And all of that business about Odin hanging himself as a sacrifice on a tree was really freaking her out. Why would he do that? How did he learn anything from being dead? And why...letters? That seems a little lack luster for a reappearing act. Nope, she didn't really grasp how that all worked out for Odin at all. And wasn't he a god? How could he die then? Aren't they immortal? She was all sorts of confused now, but tried to listen all the same.

After scribbling his name down, James leaned back against his seat and listened as Professor Botros as he discussed what they were going to be learning in the next few months. Which apparently was the sacred runes of Odin. Fascinating.

When he asked the classes what Runes were, the 5th year's eyebrows knotted in concentration as he tried to recall lessons with his grandfather before raising his hand - and hoping that he recalled the right definition. "Professor, Runes are letters which makes up the runic alphabet and were used by Germanic tribes before they adopted the Latin alphabet." Merlin knows why - runes were so simple looking compared to Latin.

A bunch, more than half of the class really, knew it was sort of an alphabet. Some went ahead and gave more details, which only made them make more mistakes, but he appreciated the effort and nodded smiling at each and every one of them. "Runes are an alphabetic script, yes. That is correct." However, it's an incomplete answer...

... now those gave more related answer. "Mentioning their magical properties is important since it's one of the significant reasons Ancient Runes is taught to young witches and wizards." Still, some answers were partially incorrect. He would correct them in a bit.

Botros gave the boy a steady look. "I'm not sure what you mean by 'funny', but I don't see any of your classmates laughing their heads off yet." Because runes were not funny. They were pretty serious business. The boy would see in a minute. Still, he'd get points for having the guts to make fun of them.

He was amused the Hufflepuff girl felt the need to mention her source. Botros was sure though that her brother was not taught runes by him, because this horrible version of Odin's story (if she even was referring to Odin) was way off. "Nice story, I think I have to meet your brother if he's going to continue help you with your study." Smiling and patting the girl's shoulder as he passed by. Again. The real story will be told in a minute.

Leaning slightly on his cane, Botros continued to walk between desks avoiding the piles until another Hufflepuff raised her hand. "That'd be a cross between Ancient Runes and Arithmancy I believe." He joked, not really though. "No, though. Not maths. But good effort."

Uhh.... "Botros." He told the boy gently. His answer was acceptable, too.

Ab smiled and nodded at the brilliant boy. A Ravenclaw, why wasn't this surprising? "Good thinking, young boy. And correct answer."

Botros had to find him a spot on one of the desks to lean on and listen to the next Slytherin boy - he obviously had a lot to say. Oh another enthusiastic Ravenclaw. Botros nodded, smiling widely, at the little girl. She had her sources, too, apparently even if she went off the course a bit. "Great answer, too. We'll help you organize your information more." He turned around slowly and headed for his desk again.

Harvey listened as the professor told them whether they were wrong or not, he knew he was along the right track having been here for some years and having been in runes before. He just waited for the others to get through their answers, the professor was then done with the answers and had even told a guy to sit with him for whispering to girls? Well that was a learning curve for him he was not to whisper to girls, he didnt want to sit up there with the professor right in front of people. He listened as the professor told them about the runes and where they came from and how they came to be. He gave a bit more information on it before asking them who that guy in the picture was, he hoped they werent going to look at old guys alot like they did in astrology. He put up his hand cause he knew who that was having heard about him in his muggle classes "Thats Thor.. and he is holding a hammer" he answered as he looked at the picture it bit more before waiting for the class to move along.

Mika BEAMED at the response the Professor had given her. Yes she was going to be BRILLIANT at this. Her hand shot up the exact moment the image appeared.

"Professor that is Thor the son of Odin he's one of the many people that Snori Sturlusson wrote of...and in old German he's known as Donar...he's basically the norse god associated with thunder, lightning, storms, oak trees, strength, fertility, and he was charged to protect mankind from his hand brother and half-god Loki." Too much?

Maybe a little. But she was after all obsessed with Norse mythology. It was where her family had came from before they went to Australia. Really did Johanson sound like an Aussie name? Nope.

Thats because it was germanic first.

"And his tool is his hammer. Though if you REALLY think about it Thor's hammer is actually a kind of Mjo-mojn gah...Mjölnir?" She left the end hoping she'd said it right. It was after all not a common word. "If I had to guess it probably has the rune of Sig on it - seeing thats the rune for lightning..."

Alice had no idea who the guy in the picture was. But once everyone began to claim that it was Thor, she recalled things about the hammer. Because the hammer was WEAPONRY to her, and she could deal with weaponry. "That's Thor's hammer Mjölnir, meaning 'crusher', right?" Which obviously meant it was AWESOME. Because it was similar to a bat, mhm. "I think we'd discuss it in class because it has a rune to represent it, right? Swastika or something. And isn't Thor Odin's son? .. So is he.. like.. indirectly related to Odin's runes?" It made sense in her head.

Or something.

Taylor raised her hand, "That is Thor, god of thunder, Professor." She smiled, "We might be learning about them because they have runes or the culture that they are in have runes... right?" Tay grimaced and grew silent, turning beat red.

ooc: - You don't have to give a completely correct answer, just let your character reply according to their year/knowledge/personality.

Mo grinned broadly at the professor's response to his answer, and even more broadly at his response to West's. See? West knew stuff. He was dead useful to have around. The picture of Thor was sort of an obvious one, and Mo settled back in his seat to ruminate while his classmates responded. What were the questions again? WHY were they discussing Thor?

"Professor," Mo's hand went up again. "Thor is part of the same pantheon as Odin, and I bet he used runic mojo to soup up that hammer of his." Or maybe vice versa? It was all conjecture at this point anyway. "His hammer appears in a lot of artwork and on runestones all over Scandinavia too. Funny that it looks kind of like a capital T, so whenever you see the hammer, it's like a big sign Thor left behind saying, "THOR WAS HERE"." Pause. "Oh, and Thursday is Thor's Day. We should all carry around hammers on Thursdays."

Sierra blinked then tilted her head as she looked at the picture. Yeah, that was Thor, but...what was that weapon he was carrying? She had six years of Ancient runes behind her, but one, she wasn't any good at it and two, they'd never discussed old weapons before.

She raised her hand anyway. "That's Thor, and...I have no idea what he's holding. It looks like a huge stone attached to wood, though," she said. Yup. That was her best answer. "Maybe we're discussing it, though, because he used it to create runes? Or, to pound them into objects?"

Ehh...she didn't know.

MERLIN! Lots of information coming at the Slytherin. Sky managed to keep up with her note taking, though, and even learned a few things. Like that old men linked Scandinavia with Germany somehow instead of the more correct Vikings, meatballs, beautiful people, and hard to put together furniture. Scandinavians being German, pfffft. And, also that yes, even in a magical school, classes could be absolutely boring.

Sky thought about going a different track than her classmates who obviously thought that comic books were equal to textbooks, but just decided to comment on it instead. "You guys read way too many comic books. That is Thor and is a Norse god, but because he protected them from the Swedes and their hard to build furniture and virtue ruining good looks. Though, they probably could've used the help in the looks department." Yep, that was the truth about Thor. Could probably use him now, with the popularity of Ikea and all that.

He dug a bit into the Slytherin's shoulder while turning around to the blackboard and waving his wand to write the main points of the upcoming lecture.

Botros moved away from the boy and the desk, to the side, allowing the kids to see the texts on the blackboard. "The runes were given to humankind by the central God of Norse mythology Odin, who hung himself upside down on the World Tree in a self sacrificing ritual." Did any of them fall asleep yet? Hopefully not. "After nine nights of suffering upon the tree, Odin died and passed on to the realm of the afterlife where he gained wisdom and was then reborn. Odin passed on his newly acquired wisdom to his people in the form of Runes." Pause. "The runes must be considered an instrument given to us by Odin to help us bring order and clarity to our lives." So, no one should be confused.

"Three aspects of the runes are the sound, the shape and the secret knowledge that are associated with the runes. A good rune master is one who has mastered this threefold nature of the runes. Rawdon frowned because he answered exactly what was asked. I should have had at least a point. The old man needs to realize that we're not all mind readers, he thought as he took notes on the lecture. Once he finished, he lowered his quill and began to flex his fingers which were beginning to cramp up.

A picture? Hmm. He studied it for a few minutes as he tried to recall Norse mythology, ignoring the answers that his classmates were giving. I know this one. The dude smashes stuff with his hammer! Uncle Max always said that a Beater's Bat is like Thor's hammer when wielded properly!

Vindictus raised his hand. "Professor Botros, the individual in the drawing is Thor, the Norse god of thunder. He's holding a hammer and uses it to protect mankind by smashing evil stuff with it, and can even pulverize mountains with a fierce swing," he explained as he tried to contain his excitement and refrain from providing sound effects. "Perhaps we're discussing him because his name has been found written in Odin's Runes, and Odin is the father of Thor."

Zhenya listened as he explained everything about the alphabet and scribed it in her book. It was good information, and since this was her OWL's year she should really be studying. So, she just kept writing everything she could remember him saying.

She saw the picture he had on the board.. it looks like... Thor? She put her hand up and said "Professor is that Thor? He is carrying a... a My.. Mo.." she didn't know how to say it!... "A Hammer. They say that Thor has the ability to throw the hammer at whatever he wants and it will never miss. It's strong enough, or maybe Thor is strong enough, to use it to crush mountains." She paused a bit, trying to remember something about the runes that might have something in common with Thor. They were both old? Like, ancient history old? No, maybe that wasn't it. "Well, the rune Thorn is similar to Thor. Maybe we are going to be looking at that rune." It was a bit of a guess.

Oh! So she did answer something right. The Priestesses would be so proud. But as the little Claw listened to other people's answers those soulful brown eyes grew larger and larger. There is so much about Runes that she doesnt know about!

Or maybe it was taught but as usual she was far too distracted with what shape the clouds were trying to make in the sky...

She jumped in her seat at the sound of the Professor MAN calling the attention of the BOY in green robes, who happened to have sat next to the ginger girl she saw earlier.

Oh yes another thing she has learned today. BOYS are TROUBLE mhmmm.

And now a picture of a gruffy looking person with a hammer. He does look vaguely familiar "Oh! He's the man who would fix our roof so the water doesnt leak in when it rains."
